Elvis unites fans in Canada: You could not only "feel the love" on the streets here yesterday at the 12th annual Elvis Festival, you could see it. Thousands of people carried life-size black and white Elvis masks that doubled as fans on the second steamy day of this year's three-day party for fans of "The King." They came from all over North America and as far away as England and Australia to this city of 18,000 on the shores of Georgian Bay. "On Friday, you saw everything walking down the streets -- Muslims, Hassidic Jews, aboriginals, Chinese, Jamaicans, young and old, in every walk of life from welfare to millionaire," Collingwood resident Bill Brock, 55, said. "Elvis is a uniting force." For the first time in festival history, to kick-off the Friday night street party, 97 of the registered 140 Elvis impersonators or "tribute artists" as they call themselves, sang the Presley classic All Shook Up in unison on the Hurontario St. mainstage. They set a new Guinness World Record, beating last year's British record of 77 Elvises, although they await official verification from Guinness World Records, festival publicist Marion Lewis said. Among them was this year's only blind Elvis, Doug Leavens, 63, of Sarnia, competing for the first time in the non-professional category and singing I Can't Help Falling in Love with You. "I was blind from birth and as a teenager, dying of boredom studying classical piano until I heard Elvis," he said, sitting near Collingwood's big clock tower dressed in black and wearing a curly black wig and sideburns. Anyone can buy a pair of thick fake sideburns for $6 at local street vendors to get into the festival mood. Kitchener teacher Cathie Sullivan, 52, wears hers with a pair of big rhinestone studded, hot pink sunglasses. "This is just the best place to be because everybody has such a good time. You can feel everybody's love for Elvis and you never see a grumpy face," she said. CVB nixes funding request for Elvis museum: The Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau this week rejected a request to help fund a proposed $262,000 expansion of the Elvis Presley Museum. Board members were asked to contribute $50,000 to the project but declined because they have not seen the Foundation's operating budget. If they see a budget, they might reconsider, said board member Everett Kinsey. World record smashed by Elvii in Collingwood, Canada: There were plenty of sideburns, sequined jumpsuits, tight black leather pants and blue suede shoes when 94 hip-swivelling Elvises smashed the world record for the largest Elvis impersonation event last night in Collingwood. Singing in unison, they performed the Elvis Presley song "All Shook Up" to an appreciative crowd of several thousand who cheered them on in their bid to get into the Guinness Book of Records. The world record bid, at the 12th annual Collingwood Elvis Festival, easily beat the record set by the Selfridges department store on Oxford St., Central London, in April 2005 when 77 Elvis tribute artists sang "Viva Las Vegas" at one time. The record bid followed strict rules set out by Guinness calling for each Elvis impersonator to be dressed in complete costume, holding a numbered paddle and singing in unison. The Collingwood Elvises proved they truly were Kings by singing for just over four minutes, one minute longer than the previous record, said official timekeeper Sandra Cooper, deputy Collingwood mayor of the town dubbed `Elviswood.' Not to be outdone, long-time Collingwood Mayor Terry Geddes took on the role of official Guinness counter and verified there were 94 Elvises. "That was by far the most unusual official duty I've had as mayor, but it was totally exhilarating," said Geddes. Fab Giacomelli, 51, of Hamilton — in a blue-sequined jumpsuit — led the group onto the stage as Elvis Number 1. Being in the first cluster of Elvises meant he had to stand in the sun in front of the stage because the stage wasn't big enough to accommodate all 94 impersonators. "It was hot out there, but it was an incredible rush ... with us all singing together," he said. Wearing matching pink jackets and black pants, their black hair slicked back, brothers Brenen and Brycen Katolinsky of St. Catharines, age 8 and 12, were Elvis Numbers 38 and 39 and sang their hearts out. Author Michael Gray, who penned a book on Elvis awhile back, manages to draw terrific connections and insights into Elvis and Bob Dylan. While it helps to have some knowledge of Dylan as an artist (the more the better), this essay should succeed in making Dylan fans appreciate Elvis...and possibly vice versa. Any Elvis skeptic (and we've all known them) who likes Dylan would leave realizing that Elvis is a true hero of the man. This is a high quality essay and I recommend that all curious Elvis fans take a look at this volume." Shaking Up The Great Lakes" Fort Baxter CD: The third release on the Fort Baxter Classic Series will be Shaking Up The Great Lakes . This CD will feature the April 24th, 1977 Ann Arbor, MI show ( originally released on the A Profile - The King On Stage vol.1 ). Since the soundboard recording is incomplete the CD will contain also the performance recorded two days later in Kalamazoo, MI. Both soundboard recordings had some songs edited out when originally released, and for the first time presented in their complete form. These two concerts certainly make a nice double features as both contain several songs done only once, songs like Trying To Get To You, Jailhouse Rock, Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel, Help Me, Little Sister, Polk Salad Annie, Unchained Melody, Little Darlin', Big Boss Man, Heartbreak Hotel, And I Love You So, Blue Suede Shoes and Hurt.The material is presented in its best-ever sound quality to date with a 12 pages colour booklet, relevant text and photographs. This is scheduled for release in September. Definitely a very interesting CD to those who missed them out back then, and further more since it will be in better sound quality. "This Is Elvis" 2DVD official release for August 2007: Another confirmation that Warner Bros will be issuing a 2 disc DVD release of "This Is Elvis" has been made in the past 24 hours by George Klein on his all original Elvis hour radio show. Klein said Warner has updated and "refreshed" the original film that was released back in 1981. Elvis Has Left the Building - Down a Rope: "ELVIS" is due to make a sensational comeback appearance at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital this October along with a few friends. These will be similiar to the recent "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" and "Almost In Love" reissues. (Source: Daryl, FECC) The Mystery of Elvis' TCB ring: prslady has raised the following issue: Elvis' famous TCB ring is 1 1/2"x1" in size in heavy 18k yellow gold. It has 78 diamonds plus the eleven-carat round diamond and black onyx. The diamond is flanked by lightning bolts and the initals "TCB". As you all know, Elvis' TCB ring is on display in the Trophy Room at Graceland. But did you know that Elvis' TCB ring was auctioned off in Beverly Hills in February of this year by a very reputable, very famous jewelry company that is also a pawn shop for the rich and famous? Are there two IDENTICAL TCB rings? No, says Graceland, they know of only one ring and it's in the Trophy Room. But, the company that sold the TCB ring is real and worth lots of money. And it was advertised "Elvis Presley Ring". After contacting the president of the company, he told us that he designed the ring for Elvis and they still have the molds. One mounting is in their posession. Several rings were made for favored friends of Elvis'. This leaves a lot of qyestions: Are there two rings and Graceland knows nothing about it? Is the ring on display at Graceland a fake? Or did Elvis have several identical TCB rings himself? Did Elvis have duplicate of the original made to use just at concerts? And who sold the ring in the first place? If there were two rings why wasn't it reported in the Inventory of the Estate in 1977? If this wasn't Elvis' ring why was it advertised using his name? Sid Shaw critical of Parkes Elvis Festival officials: In his latest Elvisly Yours Cyberclub Newsletter, Sid Shaw writes: 'Australians have a great reputation for being strong characters, great in sports, great fighters and have a deep inner strength. They are even Australians that fight crocodiles and they have the world's most poisonous snakes and spiders. Sadly, this wonderful, macho reputation is being ruined by it seems a bunch of pansies who run the annual "Elvis Festival" in Parkes, NSW, Australia. Each year Parkes puts on an Elvis Festival but after reading on the Internet that Elvis impersonators were to be banned the organisers got their "knickers in a twist" ("panties in a wad"), started panicking and have run to Bob Sillerman, the new owner of EPE begging for an "Official" license. Even Bob Sillerman has stated he does not intend to stop Elvis impersonators. As long as the Parkes Elvis Festival pays the standard fee for playing Elvis music they can have all the Elvis Tribute Artists in the world performing and there is nothing EPE can do to stop Parkes celebrating the music of Elvis Presley. I took on Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc in the UK Courts to bring freedom to the Elvis World. In London alone there are seven Elvis theme restaurants and ETA Contests up and down the country throughout the year. There are probably several thousand unlicensed Elvis shows here annually. Since Australian Law follows UK Law and EPE was defeated here I would be happy to advise the Parkes Elvis Festival Committee about their rights for free. The book will include photos from West’s personal collection as well as photos donated from the Russ Howe Collection. The book also includes two appendices – “All The King’s Men” and “Myths, Facts and Frequently Asked Questions”. The former is a section on former Memphis Mafia members while the latter is a list of questions West answers directly from Presley followers. In addition to combing through hundreds of documents, the two had several Presley experts read the manuscript to ensure its accuracy. “It was my privilege and pleasure to help edit the book because I was able to relive a lot of the memories,” said author and longtime Presley fan Sandi Pichon. “I also learned quite a bit about Elvis through many untold stories. Elvis' historical concert from 'College Park 27th September 74' to be released?: Often regarded as Elvis' worst concert ever, it is rumoured that the Straight Arrow label will be releasing a good quality audience-recording of this very show later this August. Following on from their release 'Going Back In Time' Orlando, Feb 15, 1977, it is believed that they have obtained the original complete concert tape and that it is in good quality. Previously this has only been available on an appalling quality audience-recording delightfully named, 'All Gut In College Park'. However having the concert with good sound quality we find the show isn't actually as bad as expected with Elvis pulling off fine versions of 'How Great Thou Art', 'It's Midnight' and others. He certainly wasn't a well man but it is an infamous performance in Elvis' concert legacy. The release will surprise many, and it will come with a CD booklet featuring photos from the show, many previously unpublished. 2006 Tupelo Elvis Festival attacts record crowds and revenue: This June's Elvis Presley Festival attracted more attendees and generated more money than any previous festival in the annual event's eight-year history. Roughly 9,700 people turned out at the June 2-4 celebration in downtown Tupelo - double the previous record attendance, according to Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association executive director Debbie Brangenberg. Aussie town all shook up over licence to impersonate Elvis: A town in central west New South Wales in Australia is applying overseas for a licence to impersonate Elvis Presley. Organisers say with 5,000 visitors to this year's event, Parkes can claim the biggest Elvis Festival in Australia. Fears that there would be a crackdown on unauthorised Elvis impersonators have prompted the group to start negotiations with the American billionaire who owns the rights to Elvis's name and likeness. Festival publicity officer Monique Kronk says if they are endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises the group would have to do some policing of its own. "We will need to be looking at any retailers during our festival which might be selling unlicensed merchandise, there will be restrictions put on them," she said. But she says the licence would increase merchandising opportunities and safeguard any performer or venue that participates in the festival. She says the endorsement would mean any Elvis impersonator who attends will not be breaching copyright even if they gain financially. "Basically everyone who is performing as an Elvis in any capacity, and any local venues even for that matter that are putting on Elvis shows, if they register through our office and at no charge, they'll be covered, for use of the Elvis name under our own licence," she said. Large crowd farewells Elvis' vet, revitalizer, businessman -- friend: More than 200 people, Elvis impersonators among them, bade farewell Friday to Dr. Edward Octave 'Doc' Franklin. A noted businessman, "self-appointed" politician, Beale Street revitalizer and Elvis' veterinarian, Franklin died last Sunday at his home in Southaven. He was 69. Former Memphis mayor Dick Hackett delivered the eulogy during a memorial service at Southaven's Twin Oaks Funeral Home, also serving as an honorary pallbearer. Bill Yoste, Vernon Simpson, Dr. Tim Fleming, Bill Renovich, Mike Glenn, state Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Southaven, and Robert Wininger were the other honorary pallbearers for Franklin, whose remains were cremated. "Franklin had the ability to make you feel like you were his best friend," said Hackett, now a Nesbit resident, who spoke to Franklin almost daily throughout their friendship. "In fact, there were times where I felt I was his only friend." Franklin was known and credited for many things, including founding the DeSoto County Tourism Association and overseeing construction of the DeSoto Civic Center. The former Army captain and diehard University of Tennessee, Knoxville, patron also practiced veterinary medicine at Raines Road Animal Clinic in Whitehaven and DeSoto County Animal Clinic in Southaven. His varied business interests included founding Passport Inns Motel chain, Bad Bob's Saloon, The Waterhole Lounge and The Vapors Supper Club. And he was a pioneer in the revitalization of Beale Street in the 1980s, with management of the New Daisy Theater, The Good Tymes Dinner Theater and Proud Mary's. In 1987, he began the "Images of the King" International Elvis Impersonator Contest, held annually in Memphis during Elvis Week. Appropriately, Franklin's video tribute Friday began with Elvis's rendition of "I Did It My Way." The service rounded out with Michael Hoover, the second person to win the "Images of a King" contest, performing two Elvis hits, "Peace in the Valley" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." Yet, Hackett said of Franklin's public attention: "It's not what he was most proud of." Hackett said Franklin talked most about his wife of 26 years, Jackie Franklin, his seven children and 11 grandchildren. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Franklin leaves two sisters and an aunt. Elvis loved to tweak performers who did his act. One night in Las Vegas, he passed a lounge where a burly singer was "overdoing the Elvis vibrato just a bit," the author says. 'Without breaking stride, Elvis . . . stormed into the lounge, walked right up onstage, hoisted his cane like he was going clobber the guy and said, 'If you're going to do it, do it right.' He gave the crowd a great big wink, hopped off-stage, and zoomed right out of there. But the big singer didn't see the wink - he'd been so startled that he'd fallen off the stage." One habit of Elvis' that was not a joke was his insistence that his own music never be played inside Graceland. Schilling remembers one day when somebody put on All Shook Up during a party. "Who's the wise guy that put that goddamn music on? Get that crap off!" Presley roared. "There was no doubt he was really angry," Schilling writes. "He was proud of his work, but it was just that - his work. He lived with his music outside of the house - he didn't need to hear it while he was trying to relax in his own basement." Speaking in one of his last interviews, he explained:
