New Ger Rijff "50th Anniversary of Jailhouse Rock" book update: Ger posted this message recently on the FECC board about his new book: Henrik Knudsen, from Elvis Unlimited, has asked me to do an exclusive photo book, for him, on the 50th anniversary of Jailhouse Rock, next year. It will be a package, similar to his, already succesful G. I. Blues project... Kool bonus items will be part of the project". (News, Source: FECC)

"Elvis slept here" couch for sale: A retired physician is putting up his ten-piece brown leather sectional sofa on online auctioneer eBay -- the same piece of furniture that Elvis Presley slept, ate, and watched TV on. Donald Huttner says the sofa was housed in his condo in Vail for about 10 years, during which Presley and his group visited there in 1975 and 1976.

Huttner has included on his auction site pictures and affidavits signed by three former Denver police officers who were Presley's bodyguards during the 1976 stay. Huttner, who is 71-years-old, says he's putting the sofa on the block to help pay for a kidney transplant.

As of early Friday, there hadn't been any bids on Huttner's piece of Elvis memorabilia. The auction (Item number: 320010926714), which starts off with a minimum bid of $1,000, will end just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Elvis unites fans in Canada: You could not only "feel the love" on the streets here yesterday at the 12th annual Elvis Festival, you could see it. Thousands of people carried life-size black and white Elvis masks that doubled as fans on the second steamy day of this year's three-day party for fans of "The King." They came from all over North America and as far away as England and Australia to this city of 18,000 on the shores of Georgian Bay.

"On Friday, you saw everything walking down the streets -- Muslims, Hassidic Jews, aboriginals, Chinese, Jamaicans, young and old, in every walk of life from welfare to millionaire," Collingwood resident Bill Brock, 55, said. "Elvis is a uniting force." For the first time in festival history, to kick-off the Friday night street party, 97 of the registered 140 Elvis impersonators or "tribute artists" as they call themselves, sang the Presley classic All Shook Up in unison on the Hurontario St. mainstage.

They set a new Guinness World Record, beating last year's British record of 77 Elvises, although they await official verification from Guinness World Records, festival publicist Marion Lewis said. Among them was this year's only blind Elvis, Doug Leavens, 63, of Sarnia, competing for the first time in the non-professional category and singing I Can't Help Falling in Love with You.

"I was blind from birth and as a teenager, dying of boredom studying classical piano until I heard Elvis," he said, sitting near Collingwood's big clock tower dressed in black and wearing a curly black wig and sideburns. Anyone can buy a pair of thick fake sideburns for $6 at local street vendors to get into the festival mood. Kitchener teacher Cathie Sullivan, 52, wears hers with a pair of big rhinestone studded, hot pink sunglasses.

"This is just the best place to be because everybody has such a good time. You can feel everybody's love for Elvis and you never see a grumpy face," she said. Sullivan fits right in with this crowd where an abundance of silver and gold studs, sideburns, suede shoes and white suits were the rule. (News, Source: Toronto Sun)

CVB nixes funding request for Elvis museum: The Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau this week rejected a request to help fund a proposed $262,000 expansion of the Elvis Presley Museum. Board members were asked to contribute $50,000 to the project but declined because they have not seen the Foundation's operating budget. If they see a budget, they might reconsider, said board member Everett Kinsey. Read full story (News, Source: djournal.com)

Book by George Klein questioned: Bill Burk had this to say about the announced memoir by George Klein: "George Klein has been "going to publish" this book since we first tried to interview him for our own book, EARLY ELVIS: THE HUMES YEARS, (now in its 3rd printing), in 1990! He's insisting on a $1 million advance from any publisher, when, in FACT, all Priscilla Presley got for her book was $750,000. IF ... the Geeker's book DOES eventually get printed, I will be quite interested in seeing ALL the photos of him with his best friend Elvis during their Humes days. Meanwhile, don't hold your breath for this release." (News, Source: Bill E. Burk)

The collection of rockin' artifacts includes a flashy belt worn by the King of Rock 'n' Roll, a leather jacket, pajamas, some vintage photos, lyric sheets and a lot of other Elvis memorabilia. World record smashed by Elvii in Collingwood, Canada: There were plenty of sideburns, sequined jumpsuits, tight black leather pants and blue suede shoes when 94 hip-swivelling Elvises smashed the world record for the largest Elvis impersonation event last night in Collingwood.

Singing in unison, they performed the Elvis Presley song "All Shook Up" to an appreciative crowd of several thousand who cheered them on in their bid to get into the Guinness Book of Records. The world record bid, at the 12th annual Collingwood Elvis Festival, easily beat the record set by the Selfridges department store on Oxford St., Central London, in April 2005 when 77 Elvis tribute artists sang "Viva Las Vegas" at one time.

The record bid followed strict rules set out by Guinness calling for each Elvis impersonator to be dressed in complete costume, holding a numbered paddle and singing in unison. The Collingwood Elvises proved they truly were Kings by singing for just over four minutes, one minute longer than the previous record, said official timekeeper Sandra Cooper, deputy Collingwood mayor of the town dubbed `Elviswood.'

Not to be outdone, long-time Collingwood Mayor Terry Geddes took on the role of official Guinness counter and verified there were 94 Elvises. "That was by far the most unusual official duty I've had as mayor, but it was totally exhilarating," said Geddes. Fab Giacomelli, 51, of Hamilton — in a blue-sequined jumpsuit — led the group onto the stage as Elvis Number 1. Being in the first cluster of Elvises meant he had to stand in the sun in front of the stage because the stage wasn't big enough to accommodate all 94 impersonators.

"It was hot out there, but it was an incredible rush ... with us all singing together," he said.

Wearing matching pink jackets and black pants, their black hair slicked back, brothers Brenen and Brycen Katolinsky of St. Catharines, age 8 and 12, were Elvis Numbers 38 and 39 and sang their hearts out. "It was very exciting," said Brycen. Collingwood will now have to wait for several weeks before official word comes from Guinness on whether their bid makes it into the record books. "Elvis, My Best Man" new book by George Klein: According to the Elvis Australia site Memphis Mafia member, George Klein is writing a new memoir about his friendshgip with Elvis. Due out in late 2007-early 2008 George says" He was best man at my wedding. That's the working title. It will be from day one, from the first meeting in 1948 until today. It will have inside stories that people don't know and pictures people have never seen. You'll hear the whole, true story. I waited because there were so many books and stories that came out about Elvis after he died and into the eighties and I just didn’t want to get caught up in that circus". Elvis/Bob Dylan essay published in new book: Michael Gray has written the "Bob Dylan Encyclopedia". According to a post on the FECC board by Gregory Nolan Jr, there is a: "heartfelt, learned and revealing entry under "Elvis Presley." Author Michael Gray, who penned a book on Elvis awhile back, manages to draw terrific connections and insights into Elvis and Bob Dylan. While it helps to have some knowledge of Dylan as an artist (the more the better), this essay should succeed in making Dylan fans appreciate Elvis...and possibly vice versa. Any Elvis skeptic (and we've all known them) who likes Dylan would leave realizing that Elvis is a true hero of the man. This is a high quality essay and I recommend that all curious Elvis fans take a look at this volume."

EIN Note: Michael Gray (and Roger Osborne) wrote the excellent book "The Elvis Atlas" and Gray is also responsible for an insightful article about Elvis released in the book "Song and Dance Man". (News, Source: FECC)

'Burning Love'- A classic single?: Was 'Burning Love' a classic subversive rock'n'roll single deserving of being Number 1, or was it just an over-rated hunka-hunka self-parody? Voted one of the best singles of 1972, perhaps this was the final proof that in the seventies Elvis was still The King. EIN contributor Harley Payette examines the intensity & excitement of Elvis' essential recording 'Burning Love'. (Spotlight Article, Source: EIN)

Shaking Up The Great Lakes" Fort Baxter CD: The third release on the Fort Baxter Classic Series will be  Shaking Up The Great Lakes . This CD will feature the April 24th, 1977 Ann Arbor, MI show ( originally released on the  A Profile - The King On Stage vol.1  ). Since the soundboard recording is incomplete the CD will contain also the performance recorded two days later in Kalamazoo, MI. Both soundboard recordings had some songs edited out when originally released, and for the first time presented in their complete form. These two concerts certainly make a nice double features as both contain several songs done only once, songs like Trying To Get To You, Jailhouse Rock, Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel, Help Me, Little Sister, Polk Salad Annie, Unchained Melody, Little Darlin', Big Boss Man, Heartbreak Hotel, And I Love You So, Blue Suede Shoes and Hurt. The material is presented in its best-ever sound quality to date with a 12 pages colour booklet, relevant text and photographs. This is scheduled for release in September. Definitely a very interesting CD to those who missed them out back then, and further more since it will be in better sound quality.

Dakota Fanning tackles sex abuse in controversial film with Elvis sub-theme: As we reported on 7 June 2006, Dakota Fanning has signed on to star in a film called Hounddog. The film is about a young girl who retreats into her love of Elvis after being sexually abused. Eric Davis from Cinematical comments:

"Pic tells the story of a young girl who turns to Elvis for inspiration after suffering through a tremendous amount of abuse. Dakota Fanning? Elvis? At first, the whole thing sounds pretty cheesy. However, reports are now saying Dakota's role in the film calls for her to be -- wait for it -- "raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in 'underpants' in several other horrifying moments.

"Yeah, I'll let you sit with that one for a second.Due to the alarming subject matter, a bunch of potential investors wanted nothing to do with Hounddog. In fact, production on the film had to shut down for awhile after its funds dried up. Luckily (?), the producers located some emergency investors and Hounddog resumed filming, with a wrap scheduled for today. Based on the description of these scenes, it appears Dakota goes a bit farther than Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster did when they were that age.Though it's been done before, I was still somewhat shocked to read Dakota's mother and agent liked the explicit scenes, thinking they had Oscar written all over them. While that may be true, who in their right mind wants to see a 12-year-old girl stripped naked and raped on screen? Would you want to pay ten bucks for that?" (News, Source: cinematical.com)

The Mystery of Elvis' TCB ring: prslady has raised the following issue: Elvis' famous TCB ring is 1 1/2"x1" in size in heavy 18k yellow gold. It has 78 diamonds plus the eleven-carat round diamond and black onyx. The diamond is flanked by lightning bolts and the initals "TCB". As you all know, Elvis' TCB ring is on display in the Trophy Room at Graceland. But did you know that Elvis' TCB ring was auctioned off in Beverly Hills in February of this year by a very reputable, very famous jewelry company that is also a pawn shop for the rich and famous?

Are there two IDENTICAL TCB rings? No, says Graceland, they know of only one ring and it's in the Trophy Room. But, the company that sold the TCB ring is real and worth lots of money. And it was advertised "Elvis Presley Ring".

After contacting the president of the company, he told us that he designed the ring for Elvis and they still have the molds. One mounting is in their posession. Several rings were made for favored friends of Elvis'. This leaves a lot of qyestions: Are there two rings and Graceland knows nothing about it? Is the ring on display at Graceland a fake? Or did Elvis have several identical TCB rings himself? Did Elvis have duplicate of the original made to use just at concerts? And who sold the ring in the first place? If there were two rings why wasn't it reported in the Inventory of the Estate in 1977? If this wasn't Elvis' ring why was it advertised using his name? Will we ever find out the facts??? Sid Shaw critical of Parkes Elvis Festival officials: In his latest Elvisly Yours Cyberclub Newsletter, Sid Shaw writes: 'Australians have a great reputation for being strong characters, great in sports, great fighters and have a deep inner strength. They are even Australians that fight crocodiles and they have the world's most poisonous snakes and spiders. Sadly, this wonderful, macho reputation is being ruined by it seems a bunch of pansies who run the annual "Elvis Festival" in Parkes, NSW, Australia. Each year Parkes puts on an Elvis Festival but after reading on the Internet that Elvis impersonators were to be banned the organisers got their "knickers in a twist" ("panties in a wad"), started panicking and have run to Bob Sillerman, the new owner of EPE begging for an "Official" license. Even Bob Sillerman has stated he does not intend to stop Elvis impersonators.

As long as the Parkes Elvis Festival pays the standard fee for playing Elvis music they can have all the Elvis Tribute Artists in the world performing and there is nothing EPE can do to stop Parkes celebrating the music of Elvis Presley. I took on Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc in the UK Courts to bring freedom to the Elvis World. In London alone there are seven Elvis theme restaurants and ETA Contests up and down the country throughout the year. There are probably several thousand unlicensed Elvis shows here annually. Since Australian Law follows UK Law and EPE was defeated here I would be happy to advise the Parkes Elvis Festival Committee about their rights for free. They should save the license fee and give the money to a local children's home, just as Elvis would have wanted if he were alive.' (News, Source: Sid Shaw, Elvisly Yours)

"Tickle Me" DVD from Hollywood Classics: Pavel Cernocky from Memory Records tells us "Tickle Me" has been issued on DVD. Pavel says: The DVD is worldwide region, NTSC standard- which means it plays on all machines worldwide. The picture quality is definitelly best available as far. Much better than on previous VHS versions. Picture is sharper and colours are more realistic than before. The format of the picture is nearly 14:9, suitable for wide and standard TV screen also.

Also the sound is much better than on previously released CHARRO! movie - less hiss, real hi-fi quality. However there are some drop-outs in sound in the fist minutes of the movie- accaptable due to the age of the material.  The DVD is again equiped with bonus material- nice picture gallery and - chaptered by the songs- nice touch, you can go directly to any song included in the movie.

The moving menu itself is very impressive. The cover is of a standard quality, in the line of Hollywood Classics releases. Contact Pavel for more details (News, Source: Pavel Cernocky)

Sonny West inks book deal with Triumph/Random House: Sonny West, Elvis Presley’s longtime bodyguard and charter member of the Memphis Mafia, has signed a publishing deal with Triumph/Random House for his upcoming book, “Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business.”

Opposite: Sonny West with EIN's Sanja Meegin

The deal was inked on June 1, 2006, and is set for a 2007 release to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Presley’s death. West, who was Presley’s bodyguard from 1960 to 1976, said he’s extremely happy his long-awaited book has the backing of one of the world’s largest and best-known publishers.

“I’m extremely appreciative that Triumph/Random House sees the value of this work and I look forward to working with them,” West said. “I hope the fans will respond in kind, because my book is a tribute to Elvis.”

West’s co-author, Marshall Terrill, said Triumph/Random House’s involvement will give “Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business” a much bigger promotional push than most other Presley books.

“The publisher has very high hopes and they’re going to make every possible effort to promote our book,” Terrill said. “Even though I’m biased, I feel it’s the best and most objective look at Elvis Presley in many years. I believe most Elvis fans will come away with a deeper understanding of the man and his life because of Sonny’s insights.”

The collaboration, which started in 2002, is follow-up to the 1977 book, “Elvis: What Happened?” in which Sonny West co-authored with Red West and Dave Hebler. The book will cover West's 16 years with Elvis Presley from 1960 to 1976, the aftermath of “Elvis: What Happened?” to his thoughts today on Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley.

The book will include photos from West’s personal collection as well as photos donated from the Russ Howe Collection. The book also includes two appendices – “All The King’s Men” and “Myths, Facts and Frequently Asked Questions”. The former is a section on former Memphis Mafia members while the latter is a list of questions West answers directly from Presley followers. In addition to combing through hundreds of documents, the two had several Presley experts read the manuscript to ensure its accuracy.

“It was my privilege and pleasure to help edit the book because I was able to relive a lot of the memories,” said author and longtime Presley fan Sandi Pichon. “I also learned quite a bit about Elvis through many untold stories. Sonny’s book will make a welcome addition to any Elvis Presley library.”

Chicago-based Triumph Books was acquired by Random House in May and will now exist as an independently-run imprint of the Random House Publishing Group. (News, Source: Marshall Terrill)

"Fortunate Son - The Life of Elvis Presley" book review: Here is a short review by Publisher's Weekly about this new book which is for releasse in the US on 25 July: Elvis was "influenced by the products of a national mass culture" until he became one of that culture's greatest icons while creating a sound that wove together various strains of music from Southern whites and blacks. …the personal details are packed tightly into a psychological reading that sees Presley's downward spiral as an attempt to escape the pressures of fame in "an alternate universe governed by his own whims and predilections." Ponce de Leon's portrait is sympathetic, confidently defending Elvis from those who would brand him a racist, but this is all just reinforcement, not reappraisal.” (Book Review, Source: Publishers Weekly)

Elvis "theatre lobby card" postcards released: Faithfully reproduced from the Original USA Theatre Lobby Cards is this beautiful series of 36 Sets of Postcards. The Original Lobby Cards were in Sets of 8 for each Movie as are these 6"x 4" 8 per movie postcard sets. Some sets actually had rehearsal shots or scenes that were not used in that movie!

Why are there 36 sets you might ask, as we all know there were only 33 movies. In 1959 while Elvis was serving in the Army "Loving You" & " King Creole" were distributed to the Theatres in the USA as a 'back to back' Double Feature, and for the first & only time NEW Lobby Cards were produced.

Loving You was a totally different layout with different pics whereas King Creole NOT ONLY had New Pics & a different layout they were also in Colour !This then makes the 34th & 35th Sets, to finish off this superb series "THIS IS ELVIS" was added as it was a Theatre Release accompanied with Lobby Cards. £5.99 per set - this includes p& p anywhere in the world! Englebert cans Aussie band: Last month golden oldie crooner Engelbert Humperdinck left local entertainer and leading Australian Elvis tribute artist Mick Gerace and his band seething after he tried to pull the plug on their performance just hours before his first show at the Opera House.

The band, which had been heavily promoted as the support act for the Sydney and Melbourne leg of the June tour, was shocked when told on the afternoon of last weekend's show that Humperdinck had simply decided he would "prefer a magician" to perform in their place.

After a heated exchange, the band managed to play for 20 minutes - half the agreed set time - but huffy Humpy stood firm on canning their Melbourne shows. (News, Source: Daily Telegraph)

Elvis in sand: Massive 'Mount Rockmore' Sand Sculpture Highlights Groundbreaking of Hard Rock Park, the World's First Rock 'n' Roll Theme Park. Construction officially began today on Hard Rock Park, the single largest tourism investment in South Carolina's history and the first new major theme park to be built in the U.S. in nearly a decade. The $400 million park is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008.

In true Hard Rock fashion, instead of U.S. presidents, 'Mount Rockmore' as it was dubbed, featured the countenances of rock legends Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. The monument was carved by artisans as a tribute to rock 'n' roll legends who have inspired, influenced and entertained generations of music lovers.

With more than five years in creation and design, the innovative Hard Rock Park will feature six unique "rock environs" celebrating rock's culture, lifestyle, legends and irreverence. Appealing to the family audience, the destination theme park will offer a diverse blend of rides, shows and interactive elements creating a totally immersive full day experience.

The 150-acre park is expected to entertain as many as 30,000 guests per day and will create more than 3,000 jobs, providing an economic boon to the state. (News, Source: Charmaine Voisine)

The town big enough for Elvis and Bigfoot: The first thing to understand is that Elvis Presley (really, that's his name - if I'm lying, I'm dying ) is alive and well and living in Phillips, Milwaukee, so don't discount the impossible. Unfortunately, historic Bloom's Tavern, the bar Presley now owns next to a building named Heartbreak Hotel, was not open the day I stopped so I was unable to frame the question any newspaperman would trade his first born to ask.

"Elvis, have you seen Bigfoot?"

So I did the next best thing. I walked

Some restaurants in town were said to have put Bigfoot Burgers or "sasquatch soup" on their menus, Stutzman's story said, while south of town at Roscoe's Country Sausage owner Dennis "Roscoe" Skomaroske changed his outdoor sign to read "Buying Sasquatch Hides." And Solberg Park is very nice. On my way out of town I stopped to see where Bigfoot researchers had camped, hoping to pick up a vibe. The only upright creatures I found were campers, though I kept my eyes peeled as I departed, remembering what Brian Skomaroske had said could be one downside of this whole fuss.

"Some goofy son of a (gun)'ll probably put a monkey suit on and go in the woods," he said, "and somebody'll shoot him."

At least then we could say, Bigfoot has left the building. (Odd Spot, Source: JS Online)

Elvis would have done wonders for wine: Wine marketers have missed a trick by failing to provide meaningful links between wine and music, the MW Symposium heard last month.

This was the message of Terry McBride, president and CEO of Nettwerk Records & Management, a music producer of artists including Dido, Avril Lavigne and Barenaked Ladies.

McBride suggested that 'lifestyle products' like wine and music have plenty in common, but the wine business was missing major marketing opportunities by its largely traditional approach to communicating with consumers. Addressing delegates at the Institute of Masters of Wine Symposium in Napa, he noted that most people tended to associate wine with classical music and jazz.

'That was all very well until the 1950s,' he said, 'but then along came Elvis and you lost it. That's the moment when consumption of wine became generational.' He told the audience: 'You missed your first major branding opportunity.'

He pointed to his own company's innovative use of the internet to reach niche markets by accessing social sites to build awareness of new bands from scratch. He said there was little creative use of the internet by wine companies. But even if the wine business has missed the branding opportunities of hip hop, acid house or garage, McBride thinks there is still hope, in the rise of the singer-songwriter.

Someone who creates a personal, hand-made product that from the heart seems to be a natural fit for wine. 'Be smart,' he urged. 'Step outside your normal way of thinking about things.' (News, Source: decanter.com)

'Something For Everybody' FTD CD review: From blues to pop, ballads to rock, in 1961 this was indeed Something For Everybody. Although this deluxe release cannot hold that many new surprises for hard-core collectors, CD 1 is a sublime 78 minutes of perfect pop while CD 2 has hidden treasures that will satisfy any fan. The real strength of this collection is the inclusion of the major 1961 singles and the upgraded & flawless sound, as well as a very nice cover & 16-page booklet. Elvis' historical concert from 'College Park 27th September 74' to be released?: Often regarded as Elvis' worst concert ever, it is rumoured that the Straight Arrow label will be releasing a good quality audience-recording of this very show later this August. Following on from their release 'Going Back In Time' Orlando, Feb 15, 1977, it is believed that they have obtained the original complete concert tape and that it is in good quality. Previously this has only been available on an appalling quality audience-recording delightfully named, 'All Gut In College Park'. However having the concert with good sound quality we find the show isn't actually as bad as expected with Elvis pulling off fine versions of 'How Great Thou Art', 'It's Midnight' and others. He certainly wasn't a well man but it is an infamous performance in Elvis' concert legacy. The release will surprise many, and it will come with a CD booklet featuring photos from the show, many previously unpublished. (News, Source: Email)

2006 Tupelo Elvis Festival attacts record crowds and revenue: This June's Elvis Presley Festival attracted more attendees and generated more money than any previous festival in the annual event's eight-year history. Roughly 9,700 people turned out at the June 2-4 celebration in downtown Tupelo - double the previous record attendance, according to Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association executive director Debbie Brangenberg.

The DTMSA organizes the event, which this year earned $335,325. Revenues came from corporate sponsorships, fan club memberships, fees paid by food vendors, the carnival and activities, and from the sale of tickets, beverages and merchandise. After subtracting the $275,448 spent on hosting the festival, DTMSA retains $60,985 in profits.

"We've been in the hole before, so it's nice to have this cushion," Brangenberg said at the association's regular meeting Tuesday at the CREATE Foundation.

The Elvis Presley Festival's executive committee voted to place $50,000 of that profit into a certificate of deposit or other interest-bearing account to be used as a rainy-day fund. Part of the remaining funds likely will be used to support a capital project downtown, although that project has not yet been determined. Organizers are looking toward next year's festival, which they hope will maintain - if not eclipse - this year's successes. To do that, they will need to "have more Elvis," said DTMSA assistant director Jim High.

"This year the Elvis influence showed us that it's a huge market for Elvis fans, and it attracted hundreds and hundreds of them from around the country and around the world," he said. "We'll continue to try to put as much Elvis in our next festivals as possible." That will include keeping a second stage for Elvis acts while maintaining a main stage for other headliners.

"We've doubled the size of our festival," he said. "There's no way to back up now."

A plan to fully support future festivals with corporate sponsorship is also in the works, with past president and organization committee co-chair Randy Burchfield saying getting more sponsors should be easier this year. "We struggled getting sponsors," he said, "but after this year we think it should be no problem." (News, Source: djournal.com)

Aussie town all shook up over licence to impersonate Elvis: A town in central west New South Wales in Australia is applying overseas for a licence to impersonate Elvis Presley. Organisers say with 5,000 visitors to this year's event, Parkes can claim the biggest Elvis Festival in Australia. Fears that there would be a crackdown on unauthorised Elvis impersonators have prompted the group to start negotiations with the American billionaire who owns the rights to Elvis's name and likeness.

Festival publicity officer Monique Kronk says if they are endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises the group would have to do some policing of its own.

"We will need to be looking at any retailers during our festival which might be selling unlicensed merchandise, there will be restrictions put on them," she said.

But she says the licence would increase merchandising opportunities and safeguard any performer or venue that participates in the festival. She says the endorsement would mean any Elvis impersonator who attends will not be breaching copyright even if they gain financially.

"Basically everyone who is performing as an Elvis in any capacity, and any local venues even for that matter that are putting on Elvis shows, if they register through our office and at no charge, they'll be covered, for use of the Elvis name under our own licence," she said. Elvis Visa debit card launch: Elvis Presley™ Enterprises and EDP Licensing, Inc.™ announced today the launch of the first Elvis Presley Prepaid Visa® card.

The launch of the celebrity prepaid cards marks a new era for the debit card. Prepaid debit cards are fast becoming the card of choice among American consumers. Last year, more purchases and bills were paid with debit cards than with checks. For the past two years, debit cards have outgrown their big brother – the credit card. Much like a checking account without the paperwork, prepaid cards offer customers the convenience of a credit card and the no-interest charge advantage of a checking account.

According to Paul Cleveland, EDP’s founder and CEO, “The Elvis card marks a new era for the success and popularity of prepaid cards. The program will launch with one card and then a series of collectible cards will follow.” He added, “We believe this is one of the most unique prepaid card programs ever launched and that it will appeal to the millions of Elvis fans across the country.”

Elvis is the most successful celebrity licensing program in the world.  EDP Licensing, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDP Technologies Corporation™, is the largest online marketer of prepaid cards.

As prepaid cards overtake credit cards in popularity, consumers are looking for ways to add personality and customization to their cards.  Until now, there has been little opportunity in the market to do that.
Elvis fans will also love the safety and security of the new Elvis card. (News, Source: EPE)

Large crowd farewells Elvis' vet, revitalizer, businessman -- friend: More than 200 people, Elvis impersonators among them, bade farewell Friday to Dr. Edward Octave 'Doc' Franklin. A noted businessman, "self-appointed" politician, Beale Street revitalizer and Elvis' veterinarian, Franklin died last Sunday at his home in Southaven. He was 69.

Former Memphis mayor Dick Hackett delivered the eulogy during a memorial service at Southaven's Twin Oaks Funeral Home, also serving as an honorary pallbearer. Bill Yoste, Vernon Simpson, Dr. Tim Fleming, Bill Renovich, Mike Glenn, state Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Southaven, and Robert Wininger were the other honorary pallbearers for Franklin, whose remains were cremated. "Franklin had the ability to make you feel like you were his best friend," said Hackett, now a Nesbit resident, who spoke to Franklin almost daily throughout their friendship. "In fact, there were times where I felt I was his only friend."

Franklin was known and credited for many things, including founding the DeSoto County Tourism Association and overseeing construction of the DeSoto Civic Center. The former Army captain and diehard University of Tennessee, Knoxville, patron also practiced veterinary medicine at Raines Road Animal Clinic in Whitehaven and DeSoto County Animal Clinic in Southaven. His varied business interests included founding Passport Inns Motel chain, Bad Bob's Saloon, The Waterhole Lounge and The Vapors Supper Club. And he was a pioneer in the revitalization of Beale Street in the 1980s, with management of the New Daisy Theater, The Good Tymes Dinner Theater and Proud Mary's.

In 1987, he began the "Images of the King" International Elvis Impersonator Contest, held annually in Memphis during Elvis Week. Appropriately, Franklin's video tribute Friday began with Elvis's rendition of "I Did It My Way." The service rounded out with Michael Hoover, the second person to win the "Images of a King" contest, performing two Elvis hits, "Peace in the Valley" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." Yet, Hackett said of Franklin's public attention: "It's not what he was most proud of." Hackett said Franklin talked most about his wife of 26 years, Jackie Franklin, his seven children and 11 grandchildren. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Franklin leaves two sisters and an aunt.

"I know from observing (Franklin)," Hackett said, "how to be a better dad, how to be a better husband, how to be a better contributor to the community." (News, Source: Charmaine Voisine)

Elvis' memory lived on this weekend in Ypsilanti, Michigan: The Seventh annual Michigan Elvisfest played to big crowds this weekend with a lot of collar-popping, leg-jerking Elvis jailhouse-rocking. The party kicked off at the Ypsilanti Marriott Eagle Crest hotel, when seven Elvii pulled up in a limo and a classic Cadillac convertible, to throngs of screaming fans. Some raved about meeting the many incarnations of the 1950s, '60s and '70s music and movie star on Friday. "They were all cool" said long-time Elvis Presley fan Mary Mullins of Ypsilanti, who attended a meet and greet at the hotel with her daughter. Featuring eleven ETAs, including Canada's award-winning tribute artist Stephen Kabakos (right), crowds of 10,000 were expected.
This year the Michigan Elvisfest had Graceland's sanction & added publicity. Festival director Mary Decker said, "Graceland put us on their website and their fan club lists," She said fans travelled from as far away as Georgia, Nebraska, Missouri, Florida, New York and Canada. "I found out there's a lot of people out there that may not tell you they're Elvis fans, but they definitely are." This year's Elvisfest centred around concerts by 11 Elvis tribute performers with oth ers artists performing tributes to Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Cher, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and the Blues Brothers. Dolly Parton tells how The Colonel stopped Elvis recording 'I Will Always Love You': In an interview with CMT producer Jeremy Thacker about the 'Greatest Moments' of her career, Dolly Parton revealed how Elvis nearly recorded her famous song.
Dolly Parton: "I hesitated to tell it for a long time because I thought maybe people would not take it right, because it was about Elvis. But Elvis loved "I Will Always Love You," and he wanted to record it.
I got the word that he was going to record it, and I was so excited. I told everybody I knew, "Elvis is going to record my song. You're not going to believe who's recording my song." It's like one of those things I told everybody. I thought it was a done deal because he sent word that he loved it and he was doing it. They got to town and they called and asked if I wanted to come to the session - and, of course, I was going to go.

Then Colonel Parker gets on the phone and said, "You know, I really love this song," and I said, "You cannot imagine how excited I am about this. This is the greatest thing that's ever happened to me as a songwriter." He said, "Now you know we have a rule that Elvis don't record anything that we don't take half the publishing." And I was really quiet. I said, "Well, now it's already been a hit. I wrote it and I've already published it. And this is the stuff I'm leaving for my family when I'm dead and gone. That money goes in for stuff for my brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews, so I can't give up half the publishing." And he said, "Well then, we can't record it." I guess they thought since they already had it prepared and already had it ready, that I would give in. I said, "I'm really sorry," and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it's like, "Oh, my God ... Elvis Presley."
And other people were saying, "You're nuts. It's Elvis Presley. I mean, hell, I'd give him all of it." I said, "I can't do that. Something in my heart says, 'Don't do that.'" And I just didn't do it, and they just didn't do it. But I always wondered what it would sound like. I know he'd kill it. But anyway he never got to record it. Then when Whitney Houston's version came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland!

Elvis Army exhibit leaving the building: In the days when Elvis Presley was staging concerts, the announcer would signal that the show was over with the line "Elvis has left the building." At Fort Knox, Elvis is leaving the building on Friday.

For the last two years, the Patton Museum has offered visitors a look at an exhibit concerning "the Soldier known as Elvis Presley," but its last day is Friday. The exhibit opened March 24, 2004, on the 46th anniversary of the day Elvis joined the Army and has included mementoes of Elvis when he served as an enlisted Soldier in Friedberg, Germany.

Presley served in the Army from March 1958 until March 1960, spending the majority of this time assigned to Ray Barracks in Friedberg. The time is running out to see -- among other things -- the Army fatigues and overcoat worn by "The King."

Elvis music featuring in Australian National University School of Music Gala: The main item for boys at this year's ANU School of Music gala outreach concerts in Canberra, Australia will be O Sole Mio. Jerry Schilling talks about Elvis' passion for practical jokes: Elvis Presley may be famous for his pelvic thrusts and never ending sideburns but a new book is all set to reveal that he had a passion for practical jokes too.

According to the New York Post, in Me and a Guy Named Elvis, which hits stores next month, author Jerry Schilling, a key member of Presley's Memphis Mafia, recalls one night when John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin stopped by with a few friends to meet Elvis and found him decked out in pajamas. Elvis "stood, eyed John, and said, 'Let's swap pants,' while simultaneously, in expert [Monty] Python fashion, letting his pajama bottoms drop beneath his robe.  John burst out laughing. Nobody accepted Elvis' offer."

Elvis loved to tweak performers who did his act. One night in Las Vegas, he passed a lounge where a burly singer was "overdoing the Elvis vibrato just a bit," the author says. 'Without breaking stride, Elvis . . . stormed into the lounge, walked right up onstage, hoisted his cane like he was going clobber the guy and said, 'If you're going to do it, do it right.' He gave the crowd a great big wink, hopped off-stage, and zoomed right out of there. But the big singer didn't see the wink - he'd been so startled that he'd fallen off the stage."

One habit of Elvis' that was not a joke was his insistence that his own music never be played inside Graceland. Schilling remembers one day when somebody put on All Shook Up during a party. "Who's the wise guy that put that goddamn music on? Get that crap off!" Presley roared. "There was no doubt he was really angry," Schilling writes. "He was proud of his work, but it was just that - his work. He lived with his music outside of the house - he didn't need to hear it while he was trying to relax in his own basement." Elvis influenced singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson: Swingin'-Little-Guitar-Man posted this interesting message on the FECC board:

The late Harry Nilsson (Everybody's Talking; Without You), whose superb three octave vocals led him through some of the most brilliant albums of all time owed a lot of his popularity to Elvis' movie sountracks!! Speaking in one of his last interviews, he explained:

"John (Lennon) always felt that Elvis was washed up after he returned from the services. We used to argue about it (laughs). I was influenced more by the movie albums than by anything he did in the early days.

When I heard the FRANKIE AND JOHNNY recordings, I was drawn in by the sincerity in Elvis' approach to dixietime music. He took you back while managing to keep a 60s sensibility in evidence. It was my favourite album of his and I still treasure it. It had a lot to do with how HARRY (Nilssons excellent 3rd album issued in 1969) came to be. I put a lot of dixie in there. A bit of elevator music. I really borrowed from Elvis and the results pleased me beyond doubt." (News, Source: FECC)

Graceland character to remain despite overhaul: A massive overhaul to the Graceland complex that was announced last winter is still in the works, but "there's no specific timetable set," said Kevin Kern, spokesman for Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Media mogul Robert F.X. Sillerman got control of the late singer's name and likeness in 2005 after paying out $100 million, according to a story in The New York Times. In March he announced plans to overhaul Graceland, which receives about 600,000 visitors annually, into a destination that would attract many more patrons.

In particular, plans to tear down the 128-room Heartbreak Hotel and replace it with an entertainment complex, two 400-room hotels and restaurants, is still on the drawing board, said Kern.

But don't expect the shag carpeting in the mansion's Jungle Room to be taken up and replaced with hardwood floors, the spokesman said.

"The house is a national landmark. You don't make changes like that. You don't change a national landmark,'' said Kern. "There's always the process of maintaining a place, but that doesn't mean you have to make changes. You clean it up. You trim the trees and change out plants, but you don't change the house. Graceland mansion will always be like it was." (News, Source: Dickson Herald)

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and is not to me missed! For more information/prices/reservations, email natalie@scheff.biz  (News, Source: Ann Ogilvie)

President Bush & PM Koizumi talk about Graceland visit (watch video): PRESIDENT BUSH: First of all, the Prime Minister and I would like to thank Priscilla and Lisa for their gracious hospitality. And we thank the Graceland staff, as well, for arranging this unusual experience. First of all, my presence here shows it's never too late to come to Graceland. Laura and I are -- we've known Elvis Presley since we were growing up. He's obviously a major part of our music history. He had an international reputation. His reputation was so strong that he attracted the attention of the now Prime Minister of Japan. I was hoping the Prime Minister would want to come to Graceland. I knew he loved Elvis -- I didn't realize how much he loved Elvis. He not only knows Elvis' history, he can sing a pretty good Elvis song. This visit here shows that not only am I personally fond of the Prime Minister, but the ties between our peoples are very strong, as well. And so, again, to the Presleys, thank you all. And Mr. Prime Minister, glad you joined us. Want to say a few comments?

PRIME MINISTER KOIZUMI: It's like a dream. I never expected President come with me to visit Graceland. There's Elvis song: To Dream Impossible. (Singing Elvis song.) (Laughter.) My dream came true. Thank you very much for -- thank you. Thank you very much for treating me nice, the Elvis song. (Singing Elvis song.) Thank you.

PRESIDENT BUSH: We're going to go have some barbeque, thank you.

Larry Geller responds to Rhys-Meyers claims: If Jonathan Rhys Myers' remarks about Elvis weren't so mean-spirited, they would be laughable and not worthy of comment.  But since some people don't know the truth they can be swayed or confused by lies.  For those of us who knew Elvis and spent many years with him, this is particularly absurd.  Of all people, Elvis was the essence of the all-American heterosexual male.  Obviously, Jonathan Rhys Myers is looking in the mirror and his vision is clouded by his own questionable sexual orientation. Wanted - Shreveport memories of Elvis: Elvis Presley, who began his professional career in Shreveport in the 1950s, gave his last performance here 30 years ago Saturday.

And just 13 months earlier, he’d given his penultimate concerts in Shreveport, shows mildly criticized by The Times’ amusements editor. That resulted in fans who were anything but amused and made it impossible for him or anyone else here to get any work done for several days.

Memories like those, from both the start and the close of The King’s long career, give Shreveport and Shreveporters a special claim to Elvis Presley. And The Times would like to hear from people who have memories to share of those last performances here.

If you have a memory or a photo of Presley’s last shows in Shreveport to share, send them by e-mail to The Times in care of japrime@gmail.com. We’ll share them with readers, giving you one last fling with The King.

Worst ever photo of Elvis?: Sid Shaw included this awful photo of Elvis in the latest issue of his excellent Elvisly Yours Cyber Newsletter. Sid says:

"Elvis was probably the best looking guy in history. Perhaps Rudolph Valentino fans would disagree, but I don’t think many are around to dispute the fact so in Elvisly Yours’ opinion Elvis wins hands down until you see the worst photo of Elvis ever. As I search my archives, not really archives, more like boxes and bundles of photos I have collected over the years, I come across some interesting photos. I have photos not only of Elvis but also from my 52 trips to Memphis, 40 trips to Russia and visits to many other countries on behalf of Elvisly Yours.

Of my entire collection I think this is the worst ever photo taken of Elvis Presley. He was pulling a funny face on stage in the 1970’s and it always cracks me up when I see it and thought I would share it with you." If anyone has a worse photo of Elvis contact Sid (News, Source: Sid Shaw)
