Interview with authors of 'ELVIS UK - Extended': Co-authors John Townson and Gordon Minto recently published 'ELVIS UK Extended - The Ultimate Guide to the Elvis Presley's EPs 1957 - 2001'.
The book, extensively illustrated, details the history of Elvis' Extended Play releases, their popularity and subsequent fall from favour.
It includes a chronological list of all the EPs their multiple repressings and all are cross-referenced with its US counterpart and key differences discussed.

Based on 40+ years of research, and with contributions by insiders providing previously unknown perspectives and background knowledge on the production, marketing, musical and other aspects of "just" 22 original Extended Play's and 3 EP box-sets, this impressive book is the definitive word on Elvis' UK EP releases.

Reason enough for Kees Mouwen (Elvis Day By Day) and EIN's Piers Beagley to sit down with both authors to find out more about the story behind the research and writing of this new book.
The two gentlemen also slipped in some interesting news on future projects.

(Interview) Dick Dekker and David Ward, authors of the new book, ‘From Memphis To Tokyo – A Reference Guide To The Absolute Mastery of Elvis’ Japanese Vinyl’: With the release of this book imminent, EIN’s Nigel Patterson and Elvis Day By Day’s Kees Mouwen, went treasure hunting in the land of the rising sun to discover what gems can be found in Dick Dekker and David Ward’s new discography about Elvis’ Japanese vinyl (and learning a few new Japanese words in the process).
Discover the delight of Japanese Elvis vinyl...
... The authors discuss the love the Japanese producers put into their releases. Making alternate, high quality and adoring covers for their records, that fascinate Elvis vinyl collectors.
... Virtually every record has something about it that’s different to the equivalent release in another country, whether it be different artwork, different songs or extras like a lyric sheet. That’s what makes the Japanese releases interesting objects for both Elvis and vinyl collectors...

Paul Belard Interview about Col Parker and Elvis 'The King & The Jester': EIN recently discovered that prolific author Paul Belard is researching a new book about Elvis and Col Parker. Due out in 2024 the book has the provisional title 'The King & The Jester'.
Belard explains... Nearly forty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley remains equally famous and easily recognized around the world. For most of the entirety of his adult life, the man who made all the major decisions of Elvis’ career was Tom Andrew Parker, who, himself, became a celebrity by association. Why is Elvis’ manager so well-known? The author is clearly not the only one who cannot name Sinatra’s manager, nor Johnny Cash’s, the Rolling Stones’, Springsteen’s or Beyoncé’s.
On the positive side, Tom Parker was a hard worker, a gifted promoter, a skillful negotiator, and a keen judge of character. Aside from the gifted promoter, which he undoubtedly was, the other traits, put in the wrong hands, can easily become negative qualities....

A new book on Col Parker? EIN wanted to know more about how Paul Belard chooses his topics, his views on wily old Col Parker - as well as the recent 'ELVIS' and 'Priscilla' movies...
EIN's Piers Beagley asked the questions...

(Interview) Shane Brown author of the critically acclaimed (and finally published in hardback) 'Reconsider Baby - Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide' talks to EIN: With the hardcover edition of 'Reconsider Baby – Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide' now available, EIN’s Nigel Patterson put a wide-ranging set of twenty-five questions to author, Shane Brown.

The topics include did Elvis’ music decline when he moved from Sun to RCA, “who” triggered the media and public moral outrage about Elvis in the 1950’s, Elvis’ film recordings (particularly in the 1960s), the connection between Elvis’ films and those of Mario Lanza, singles that failed to be major hits, Elvis’ mid-60’s soul-infused recordings, the quality of Elvis’ albums after From Elvis in Memphis, the artistic value of Elvis’ RCA Camden albums, Shane’s views on 10 particular Elvis songs, Elvis remixes, can Sony have another hit Elvis album?, and a lot more...

Shane Brown has strong, well-reasoned views on many “things Elvis”, and they offer a lot for readers to think about and possibly reevaluate their views on various issues.
Don't miss this fascinating interview for 2023.

Trina Young Interview 'Fact vs. Fiction in the ELVIS movie': Elvis expert and author Trina Young has recently published her new book 'Fact vs. Fiction in the 2022 ELVIS Movie: An Unauthorized Scene-by-Scene Analysis'.
Described as .. 'Out of respect for Elvis, this book clears up any misleading information or artistic license that may confuse people between what is shown in the film and what is true Elvis history. The purpose of this book is to offer a balanced side to the story.'

Having spent a lot of time recently explaining the true story-line of Elvis' amazing legacy to new fans - who have discovered ELVIS through the recent Luhrmann biopic- this book sounds fascinating.
After all, having been the most successful ELVIS movie of all-time getting down to the truth of the matter is pretty important.

EIN wanted to know more....

Piers Beagley asked Trina Young the probing questions...

Anthony Stuchbury 'From Elvis At Sun' Interview: There are two new 'Mono II Stereo' releases about to come out from the Memphis Mansion label.
'From Elvis At Sun' features all of Elvis' SUN masters in new stereo versions while the 10" vinyl 'Best Of Elvis' is a neat stereo upgrade of the original HMV october 1957 UK album.
The question of whether Elvis' mono fifties classic recordings should be re-released in "new stereo" is hotly debated among hard-core collectors and so EIN wanted to ask Memphis Mansion's producer / audio engineer Anthony Stuchbury some key questions.
Questions including...
- Do we really need stereo versions of these mono classics?
- Since EMI are officially releasing The Beatles in "new stereo" perhaps it is time for RCA / SONY to do the same for Elvis..

EIN's Piers Beagley asked the questions..

Lisa Marie / Larry King Interview: In 2005 Lisa Marie gave her longest interview to CNN's Larry King.
In the interview Lisa Marie talked about her new boyfriend Michael Lockwood, her daughter Riley, the selling of EPE, making music, her new album 'Now What', Scientology, having more children, as well as Elvis’ on-going renaissance in the USA.
Looking back from today's awful news about her premature death it is quite revealing about the pressures of being Elvis' daughter and under the media spotlight

Robert Van Beek Interview -author of 'Elvis: Prodigy of SUN': In this new book 'Elvis: Prodigy of SUN Records' hundreds of hours of research have revealed new facts and interesting anecdotes from Elvis' early life and career. From Old Saltillo Rd to the magic of SUN recording studios, the first Louisiana Hayride appearances and everything in between.  This book is filled with a string of never-before-seen photos dated from 1935 till 1955.
Many of Elvis' early childhood friends share their memories in these two books. It includes a collection of jaw-dropping photos and, of course, the near to complete story from Elvis' birth until his big break in 1955.
As the book hit the printers EIN wanted to know more about this massive project, questions include...
- What extra material does this new publication offer to collectors compared to 'A Boy From Tupelo' and 'Elvis Files Vol 1'?
- The book is described as a "day-by-day" travelogue, isn't that the same as Ernst's Tupelo volume?
- How many unseen photos will fans get to see in this huge book?
- What new material is featured in the 1955 volume of the book?
- How many copies were printed and is it selling out?

Author Robert Van Beek was kind to take time out of his heavy schedule to answer our questions and send us some preview pages.

(Interview) Piotr Soczynski talks to EIN: While serious collectors will be familiar with Piotr Soczynski’s phenomenal work in documenting little known parts of the Elvis recording catalog, most fans will not. This is a great pity, as Piotr, who lives in Poland, has already published five of the best Elvis books in 2021, with two more volumes due later this year and in 2022. These books are:
Elvis Army Vinyl Records 1956-1967
★ Elvis Army Vinyl Records 1968-1991
★ Elvis U.S. Demo and Acetates 1953-1965
★ Elvis U.S. Demo and Acetates 1965-1993

Vinyl Discography from Eastern Europe, Part 1
Vinyl Discography from Eastern Europe, Part 2 (late 2021)
Vinyl Discography from Eastern Europe, Part 3 (expected 2022)
The first four volumes sold out quickly earlier this year, while the more recent first volume of Piotr’s Eastern Europe vinyl trilogy is selling fast. The depth of information, glorious visuals, and strong, clean book design have resulted in fascinating “coffee table” releases which will please (amaze) both collectors and the general fan. Piotr recently took time out to discuss Elvis in Poland and his series of books which are an important narrative-visual record of little understood Elvis vinyl releases.

(Interview) Antonella Santovincenzo, author of the new book, Elvis Aaron Presley L’Uomo Dietro Al Mito, talks to EIN: Author and Elvis researcher, Antonella Santovincenzo recently took time out of her busy schedule to talk to EIN about Elvis in Italy and her new book, Elvis Aaron Presley L’Uomo Dietro Al Mito. As we announced about Antonella’s book last month:
... This new book in Italian looks to be very interesting. Its Introduction translates to: 'When Elvis smiled the sun started to shine.' Thus expressed Joe Esposito. The importance of a smile. Like the one, one of the last, that Elvis did during the interpretation of the song Unchained Melody on June 21, 1977 and which impressed Antonella Santovincenzo so much. The smile of a tired and suffering man, still capable, however, of creating indissoluble bonds in space and time. It is precisely by chasing this smile that Antonella leads us to discover Elvis as a man, beyond the myth, drawing an extremely private, almost intimate portrait of him. Retracing the places where the artist lived, and visited by the author, the book manages to probe all the character aspects of Elvis: loneliness, generosity, insecurity, versatility, moods, charisma, intelligence, ambition, aesthetic sense, talent, patriotism, spirituality."

In this very interesting and wide ranging interview, the issues Antonella discusses, include:
    - Elvis’ popularity in Italy,
    - how she became a fan,
    - the genesis for her book,
    - traveling to Tupelo and Memphis,
    - how Elvis can help us in understanding our lives, and
    - highlights in her book.

'Jay Thompson and Elvis Presley' Interview: In April 1956 Disc-jockey Jay Thompson, from Breckenridge radio station KSTB, interviewed a young Elvis Presley while he was touring through Texas on a string of one-night stands. In that 1956 interview Elvis interestingly revealed that he was previously training to be an electrician, that his first movie would be The Rainmaker and that he did not know Bill Black or Scotty Moore before their Sun session.

In 1982 Elvis fan Scott Wheeler befriended and interviewed Jay Thompson about the experience. Although Jay never actively participated in Elvis-related events or productions in later years he also never sought notoriety for the interview either. However we believe it's important that Jay Thompson be well remembered for his valuable contribution to the history of Elvis.

'Harum Scarum' Ralph Strobel (Oboe) Interview: EIN's friend Thomas Melin recently published this neat interview on his Elvis Today blog with Harum Scarum session musician Ralph Strobel.
It features some fabulous stories about recording in Studio B at the time.
Even in snowstorm, and in 1965, fans stood outside Studio B waiting for Elvis.. .. I arrived at the RCA building before 10pm. The building is on a corner and on the side street, there were two police cars with flashing red and blue lights and what looked to be over 100 young female fans on the side of the building, apparently waiting to greet Elvis. Policemen were outside their cars watching these screaming females jumping up and down in a very cold temperature of 10 degrees.
And a great story about The Jordanaires..
.. I heard someone ask, "Where are the Jordanaires?" Elvis's back up group. "Oh, they're in another room smoking a joint", a musician said. I peeked into the room and sure enough, that IS what they were doing. However, it didn't seem to affect their singing or performance."

(Interview): Joe Shooman (author of An A-Z of Elvis: Infrequently Asked Questions) talks to EIN: Joe Shooman’s new book is unlike any other Elvis book you’ve read. Its subject matter (presented in encyclopedic style) is offbeat and at times confronting, with amazing beliefs from the outer limits of the Elvis world.

In his interview with Nigel Patterson, Shooman notes, "I'm a journalist above all so I tend to dwell on things that are factual, but as a fan of Elvis I am also drawn toward the rich and wonderful theories that abound in pop culture...."

Join EIN to find out why the author chose such an unusual theme for the book and be intrigued as he reveals information that challenges our usual understanding of the Elvis story, such as British pop star, Tommy Steele, taking Elvis on a tour of London in 1958, the “elusive” Presley (Commission) Report, and Vernon Presley not being Elvis’ biological father.

Her latest book, Beyond the Stars My Seven Years with Elvis, was recently published. Grace kindly agreed to talk to EIN about her new book and her relationship with what she calls the Entity of Elvis Presley, recalling conversations that vary from what brought him to drug abuse, to admissions about his one true love, even discussions about the meaning of life.
In the interview Grace Pearl explains,"Everyone has experienced telepathy. You suddenly think of a person you haven’t heard from in six months. The telephone rings and it’s that person. Suddenly, comes to you an idea you would have never thought of about a particular situation you’re dealing with. And you feel a strong emotion with it.... An amazing sequence of events, which happened to me in the course of a year, led me to be in direct contact with Elvis. They happened so unexpectedly that I lived each of them somewhat naturally. I hadn’t done anything to make them happen, they just did."
This is an intriguing and interesting interview which will likely engross some readers and frustrate others.

Matt Shepherd ('Elvis: Stories Behind The Songs') Interview:  BBC Local Radio presenter and EIN contributor Matt Shepherd has published his first book looking at some of Elvis' biggest hits and lesser known treasures.
'Elvis Presley: Stories Behind The Songs' the first of a two volume book, starts in January 1969, almost 50 years ago, when Elvis recorded in Memphis for the first time in 14 years.
Shepherd notes, "I started my book in 1969 as it was a crucial crossroads for Elvis, he had proved in the 68 Special that he was still a dynamic performer. However the 69 sessions would go on to show Elvis was still a major chart force, able to select and record hit making and relevant songs.
"Had these Memphis sessions not been the great success they were, Elvis could well have spent the rest of his life as a nostalgia act. So it was essential he got it right."

EIN wanted to find out more about this new volume..
- How will your book compare to recent books about Elvis’ music?
- Elvis movie songs are they what was required or tripe that never should have been recorded?
- At what point should Elvis had said "NO, I am not recording this crap”? Can you name a particular song?
- What was Col Parker’s biggest musical mistake?
-  What do you think of Elvis’ “remixes” or the new fake duets? Are they a necessary evil?

Rex Mansfield passed away: It is with real sadness that I have heard that Elvis' army buddy Rex Mansfield passed away Sunday, August 26, morning. He was 83.
Rex Mansfield was inducted into the Army on the same day as Elvis in March 1958 and went through basic training with him in Texas, traveled with him to Germany and became close friends for the next 18 months. Elisabeth Stefaniak (later Mansfield) was a young German girl in 1958 and was hired to answer Elvis' fan mail. Elisabeth became romantically involved with Elvis but was torn between her love for Elvis and her love for Rex – and she eventually chose Rex and they married in 1960.
Both Rex and Elisabeth Mansfield were special guests at Elvis Week this year at the 'Elvis Presley Fan Club Presidents’ Event'.
While Rex seemed older he did was energetic and talked with fans as he signed copies of his book.

That was only 2 weeks ago, so his death is a real shock.
Rex was a class act, a very fine gentleman and I am thankful I had the chance to know him.
RIP Rex Mansfield - Another sad loss to the Elvis World.

Keith Alverson 'Strictly Elvis 76-77' Interview: The deluxe hard-back book 'Strictly Elvis: 1976-1977' is the follow up by Keith Alverson and Erik Lorentzen to last year's stunning 'Strictly Elvis Vol 1: 1973-1974 - 1975'.
Keith Alverson first saw Elvis in concert in the early 70s when he secretly smuggled in his small pocket camera to sneak a few photos of Elvis and from there he went from strength to strength. One of his first Elvis' concerts where he was able to get quality photos of Elvis in concert was in Atlanta, July 1973, after which he saw Elvis over 80 times live on stage. Alverson's outstanding photos of Elvis in his "Phoenix" jumpsuits are known by every Elvis fan and it is obvious that the quality of Alverson's photos got better and better as the years went by.
In last year's EIN interview we discovered the background surrounding photographer Keith Alverson as well as how he got to become one of Elvis' most well-known concert photographers.
With Strictly Elvis Volume 2 just published EIN's Piers Beagley tracked down the man - as he packed for Memphis - to ask him more about the last two years of capturing the King in concert....
The book contains over 800 previously unseen photos of Elvis on stage.
We asked him that, as we all know of Elvis' sad decline over these two years, do fans really need to see so many images of an unhealthy Elvis?

DJ Fontana Obituary and Interview: D.J. Fontana was born in Shreveport Louisiana on March 15 1931 and originally began backing Elvis Presley, Bill Black and Scotty Moore when he worked at the Louisiana Hayride as early as 1954. By his early 20s he performed at strip joints and spent enough time around the “Hayride” that he was hired full time. Sun Records Sam Phillips originally assembled Elvis' Blue Moon Boys without a drummer and so it wasn't until the key RCA session of January 10 1956 that DJ Fontana joined the band on studio recordings.
That session produced 'Heartbreak Hotel' and the music world would never be the same.
EIN presents a spotlight on DJ Fontana along with a new interview “I Tell You What, He Loved Gospel Music” by EIN contributor Thomas Melin.
While DJ Fontana created some of the greatest rock'n'roll drumming ever cut on wax he always stated that he liked to "keep things simple" in a way that complemented not just Elvis, but also his other band-mates.
Go here as EIN pay their respects to the charming DJ Fontana.

Alan Hanson 'Elvis: The Movies' Interview: Respected Elvis author Alan Hanson, along with Erik Lorentzen, has just published 'Elvis - The Movies', 432 pages examining all of Elvis' movies and including some sensational photos.
Elvis Presley's dream was to become a movie star, and the dream started well for him. His acting ability developed steadily throughout his first four movies. But, alas, it was the music which first gave him access to Hollywood, that proved the undoing of his acting career. The inevitable result was a long series of films with weak plots in which only the music mattered.
Author Alan Hanson chronicles Elvis' cinematic career, combined with hundreds of stunning photos from Erik Lorentzen's exclusive collection. But what does this book offer that other Elvis Movie books don't?

Millie Kirkham  - Bob Hayden Interview for EIN: Millie Kirkham was one of Elvis' favourite back-up singers. Upon hearing her vocal on Ferlin Husky’s million selling 1957 hit record 'Gone' Elvis asked her to join in with The Jordanaires at his 1957 recording session. Millie Kirkham would work on Elvis' studio sessions through to 1967 and join him on-stage in Las Vegas for live performances including 1970's 'That's The Way It Is' filming.
As well as working with Elvis, Millie Kirkham worked closely with the Jordanaires on some of the most famous Nashville sessions including records by George Jones, Patsy Cline, Bobby Vinton, Jim Reeves, Charley Pride and Loretta Lynn.
Millie Kirkham was a little reluctant at first to do an interview as she had been mis-quoted in the past and had that fear of it happening again. She agreed to the Q & A after she was advised she would not be coming to Australia for the first "Elvis in Concert" tour.
Millie answered every question and seemed to be most happy and full of life for her age at that time.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.
As a prelude to Ken Sharp's fascinating interview with Marty Lacker and a discussion about Elvis' famous American Studio' Memphis sessions, EIN presents "Marty Lacker: a life well-lived" in which Marty tells of his life in the music industry, his friendship with Elvis along with his dislike of the over-controlling Col Parker.

In interviews Dr. Nick always stated that, "I don't regret any of the medications I gave him. They were necessities."

THE BEATLES - `They don't bother me ... I wish them luck'
HIS CAREER - `I haven't been hiding. There's no attempt to keep me out of the public eye'

Interview - Dr. Gary Vikan: A rock critic once likened the pursuit of 'experiencing Elvis' to observing something through a refractory glass prism or hall of mirrors in a fun house, where one's viewpoint depends on and is skewed by where one is looking from. Die-hard fans view Elvis essentially as musician/singer; other fans view Elvis as singer and an opportunity for social engagement; while academia sees a fuller Elvis, one comprising the musician and just importantly Elvis as a socio-cultural-religious agent.

I recently reviewed Gary Vikan's impressive and thought provoking book, From the Holy Land to Graceland. Dr. Vikan recently took time to talk to EIN about the Elvis that exists beyond his music.

In his absorbing interview, Dr. Vikan discusses the elements that support Elvis as a religious agent (secular charismatic martyr) including the significant role of Graceland, Elvis Week and ETAs (among other things); gives his reasons for why Elvis will endure for a long time to come and why Princess Di hasn't, and why Michael Jackson probably won't, become an enduring secular charismatic martyr. He also raises our awareness about other contemporary figures and incidents which have been so important that secular worship has grown up around them.

Dr. Vikan's interview is an opportunity to challenge one's thinking not only about Elvis in our own lives, but the role of Elvis (and other celebrities/events) in our 21st century media driven world. (Interview, Source: EIN)

Patti Parry was, in fact, one of a small number of girls who hung out with Elvis and the guys for many years in L.A. from the time they were young in the early 60s.
Patti was also Elvis' hairdresser but, unlike some, has never bragged about her association with him. It was therefore a pleasure for EIN to get a chance to talk to Patti in her Beverly Hills home about a few of her experiences.

I was, however, a quick study. I learned fast that it was either keep up or get left behind…"

Jerry Leiber Interview for EIN: Jerry Leiber along with partner Mike Stoller composed hit songs for many artists, beginning in 1952. After Elvis recorded their Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog" their lives changed. dramatically. The key Leiber / Stoller compositions that Elvis recorded are "Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock", "Baby, I Don't Care", “Don't", "Loving You", "Santa Claus Is Back in Town", "King Creole", "Love Me", "Treat Me Nice" and "Trouble".
Mike Stoller appeared with Elvis in the 1957 movie Jailhouse Rock, playing piano for Vince Everett's (Elvis') band. This was due to a strange twist of fate since it was actually Jerry Leiber who had been chosen for the part.
In 2006 Ken Sharp interviewed Jerry Leiber (right with Elvis) and Mike Stoller as part of his impressive FTD book about Elvis’ composers, ‘Writing For the King.’

"We could see about 13 motor bikes side by side coming towards us," says Barry. "We could see that Elvis was in the centre of the riders as they roared onto the film set. What an entrance.
As Elvis approached us I was spellbound, it was as if God had come down from heaven. We had about two hours with Elvis and talked about our tour of America. He knew we had millions of fans there but I don’t think he really understood why!"

Jerome "Stump" Monroe EIN Interview: Jerome "Stump" Monroe was the drummer for The Sweet Inspirations, and toured with Elvis from the first 1969 Las Vegas concerts through to the very end in 1977.
When regular drummer Ronnie Tutt was ill or absent, 'Stump' stood in as the replacement with the TCB Band three times over those years. 'Stump' Monroe played with Elvis in Philadelphia in 1971, Las Vegas December 1975 and finally in Madison on June 24th 1977. The Madison concert would be Elvis' third last performance, the soundboard of which has just been discovered and released on the box-set The Final Curtain.
This means that Stump has finally got to hear the Madison 1977 concert that he played on for the first time in 33 years!
Jerome 'Stump' Monroe is a charming, down-to-earth man who despite having played over 1,000 concerts with The Elvis Presley Show considers himself as no one special!

Ernst provides some interesting answers as well as his own view on Elvis' musical legacy.

"Elvis lives in the minds of those musicians who took over from him. Red West Interview: Red West was one of Elvis' closest friends. He first met Elvis in High School and went on to work for Elvis as a bodyguard until 1976. Elvis and Red West became close friends when Red volunteered to help drive Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana around the southern US states for their early tours of 1955-1956.  Red West is also a talented composer and actor who still appears in award-winning movies.

In 1999 Red West was the main guest at the Elvis English Fan Club Convention where he opened up to fans like never before, revealing his true love for Elvis. It is certainly one of the longest and the best interviews with Red West - and at times devastatingly honest.

Linda Thompson - Interview Special: Linda Thompson was romantically involved with Elvis in the 1970s and, except for Priscilla, was probably the most import partner that Elvis ever had. She lived with Elvis at Graceland for four and a half years, from 1972 to 1976. When Elvis was admitted to Baptist Memorial Hospital for eighteen days in November 1973, Thompson stayed with him in the same room. The hospital bent its rules and supplied her with a cot.
Elvis' close friends have always stated that without Linda Thompson by his side an earlier death was a clear possibility.
As part of Elvis Week 2010, EIN presents an interview special with Linda Thompson - combining Alanna Nash's 2007 interview along with the longest interview Linda Thompson has ever done for CNN in 2002.

Freddy Bienstock EIN interview: Freddy Bienstock, a prominent music publishing executive who had a long association with Elvis Presley as his designated song screener, died on September 20th 2009 at his home in Manhattan. He was 86.
Bienstock’s job was to not only find Elvis high quality material but also to maximize income for his employer - and songwriters were often pressured to forfeit a large portion of their royalties to Hill & Range, - “the Elvis tax”.

Far too many of Elvis' associates are leaving this mortal coil and author Ken Sharp was very lucky that he managed to interview Freddie Bienstock back in 2006 for his FTD book 'Writing For The King'.

In this fascinating interview with ken Sharp, Freddy Bienstock admits that "I felt very unhappy with all of the crap songs" and that there were times that Elvis would get annoyed with him.

'Hound Dog' new Leiber & Stoller autobiography: 'Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography' by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller with David Ritz has been announced for a June 9 release.
The publicity notes, "In 1950 a couple of rhythm and blues-loving teenagers named Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller met for the first time. In 1956 "Hound Dog" would become a #1 record for Elvis Presley, and Jerry and Mike became the King's favorite songwriters. They wrote such early Elvis hits as "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," and "You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care)." Their affection for Elvis was mutual, but Elvis's manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, didn't appreciate Jerry and Mike's independent ways and ended the relationship."
Hardcover: 336 pages, Publisher: Simon & Schuster (June 9, 2009). ISBN-13: 978-1416559382.
In a recent press interview they talked about their times writing in the fifties and working with Elvis.
Mike Stoller: I always thought of it as R&B, but when people told us it was rock'n'roll I took their word for it. But rock'n'roll  -for a lot of people it was everything they loved and for other people it was everything they hated.
Jerry Leiber: We were really committed to black music, not rock'n'roll. We thought rock'n'roll was really silly, to be frank with you and concocted by Alan Freed and Jerry Wexler and a couple of other ne'er-do-wells in the music business that were trying to rustle up publicity and excitement about a form, and the form was essentially white."

Interview - Christopher Byrnes Matthews, author of The Name Code trilogy talks to EIN: Over the years EIN has published a number of very controversial interviews and articles.

However, today's interview with author/researcher, Chris Matthews, represents the most challenging discussion you have ever read on EIN!

Chris Matthews' research is explosive, with the potential to alter not only our understanding of Elvis' role in the world, but also fundamental religious beliefs!

Why are there hidden codes in the Elvis Aaron Presley name?

Who put them there?

Jesus Christ is an imposter!

Who is the real Messiah?

These and many other highly controversial issues are discussed in the interview, an interview unlike any other we have published. (Source: EIN, 18 May 2008)

Joseph Pirzada (MRS) talks to EIN - Part 2: In July 2007 EIN published what turned out to be one of our most controversial interviews ever...with Joseph Pirzada, the man behind the Memphis Recording Service (MRS) organisation. In the past few years MRS has released some of the best ever audio-visual and photo journal Elvis releases including MRS Volumes 1 & 2; Tupelo's Own Elvis Presley; and The Complete New York Sessions.

FINALLY...here is the concluding part to Joseph's controversial interview. (April 2008)

Read the interview

In part 1 of his interview with EIN Joseph took aim at a number of Elvis world identities and really stirred things up with his comments on a number of issues. To say the response from readers was very polarised is an understatement! While many fans applauded the quality releases from MRS a number of other fans found fault with how they perceived MRS had obtained parts of its material for the releases.

In the concluding part to his interview Joseph again does not hold back, and also answers his critics from part 1 of the interview. Joseph addresses:

  • claims he has "stolen" both audio and visual material for his releases
  • the issue of "public domain" and legal advice he has received
  • his "perceived bitterness" towards a number of people in the Elvis world
  • takes aim at (and exposes) Johnny Saulovich aka Dr John Carpenter (and EIN publishes the photo of the infamous and outspoken Saulovich which has been circulating in the Elvis world for some time)
  • how he obtained the incredible Elvis live in Tupelo audio-visual footage
  • his legal team still waiting for a response from Sony BMG
  • the audio work for Sony BMG by Kevan Budd and David Bendeth
  • the audio fidelity of MRS releases
  • issues Sony BMG/FTD an audio challenge!
  • the chart success of the MRS single, My Baby Left Me
  • sales of MRS releases compared to FTD releases
  • Sony BMG's policy of endlessly rehashing and recycling Elvis material
  • the "politics" behind the book Inside Graceland and the MRS book which will overshadow that release
  • his involvement with the That's Alright Mama dance remix
  • Ernst Jorgensen's ongoing Sun project

The Dangerous World of Elvis Bootlegging; Vic Colonna reveals all! For the true fan the Elvis world goes way beyond the endless RCA ‘Greatest Hit’ compiles. The real Elvis musical excitement has always been found in the underworld of bootlegs of officially unreleased material. Of course it is the popularity of Elvis Bootlegs that paved the way for Ernst & Roger to create the ‘FTD’ Fan Club label. In the mists of time these bootlegs were of course vinyl albums with stunning classics as the ‘Behind Closed Doors’, ‘The ’68 Comeback’, ‘From The Waist Up’ etc all featuring unreleased classic Elvis recordings that eventually RCA would issue. Vic Colonna is one of the great names from this mysterious world that many fans will recall. EIN was delighted to discover that Vic Colonna is not only alive and well - but is also writing a book about the exciting world of Elvis bootlegs, and we were more than happy to ask the great man some questions. Go here for his revelations and photos. (Interviews, Source;EIN)

And I learned so much about him actually watching -- because there was footage pulled that no one's ever seen. Which is interesting”. From the Archives - Priscilla talks about "Elvis By The Presleys": Elvis Presley was an icon who is still loved by millions 28 years after his death. But, while many admired him, few really knew him. The woman who may have known him best was his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. She shares her memories in a new CBS special called "Elvis by the Presleys." In the special, Priscilla and her daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, speak with candor about their lives with the legendary Elvis and offer an intimate look at their family and private life.

"It's a combination of great stories, not just mine," Priscilla Presley tells The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler. She says Elvis' first cousin, Patsy Presley Geranen, and her own parents, Ann and Paul Beaulieu, share their memories about Elvis. "My mom is 79, my dad is 80," Priscilla Presley notes. "I felt they had so much to add, and we didn't want them to pass on and feel we let the opportunity go. We knew from the very beginning that this was going to be difficult."

The idea of doing this documentary came to Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley a while ago, but what prompted them to do it was the realization that only they could show the real Elvis, warts and all, to a whole new generation of people who were just discovering him and his music.

"Lisa and I thought about it," Priscilla Presley says, "We thought we can't do this. These are our memories. This is what we have to share. We've exposed so much as it is. But there are many kids now who are visiting Graceland who are asking questions: Why is Elvis still so popular today? And there are many, many books out there. There's about 500 or more books, so I can understand their confusion on who's telling the right story? There are so many different versions; other people are writing it from other books."

Looking back at the first time she met Elvis, Priscilla Presley says fans will get to see her parents version of it in the documentary.

She says, "This is the first time my parents have ever been interviewed on the subject. There's been a lot of books saying: My parents gave me away; my parents were promoting me; my mother was a stage mother, which was all absolutely untrue. My parents were very, very concerned for me, my welfare. But, again, this is a very different time. This is 1959, 1960, and, you know, Elvis was a very nervous, very vulnerable, very family-oriented. Family was very important to him, as we know. His mother held a very special place in his heart."'

Asked about what life was like when Lisa Marie arrived, Priscilla Presley says, "Oh, my gosh, it changed our lives. It changed his. He always had a very loving way about him. And for someone who hasn't been around children that much because he had no siblings, he was a natural father. We would try to be with him as much as possible, but being on the road was difficult. He would have her, as a young child, on stage. I mean, in his audiences with him. So it was a delight to see."

Vintage never-before-seen performance footage is interwoven with photographs from the Presley Estate archives and press coverage of Elvis over the years. Private home movies of the Presley family illustrate and illuminate his story. A companion book and CD will be released the same week.

"I think of happy times after I see the documentary," Priscilla Presley says. "I haven't seen these films, actually, in a long time. When we put it all together, it made us realize, God, we really had some great times. And I want the audience, the readers, to see this because, again, you have much more of an understanding of the man, not so much as the performer. You see a very different side of Elvis, again, in every aspect. By the way, I just found out the book debuts next week as number 7 of The New York Times list."

Asked why she thinks his legacy has endured," Priscilla Presley says, "He's given us so much to share. And i think he was a very special talent. When you see the documentary, you will realize why he was who he was and why he captured people's hearts. There is no other entertainer I could really compare him to."

You can see the special "Elvis by the Presleys" Friday night at 8 p.m.ET/7 p.m./CT on CBS. Also this week, a companion book and CD, with the same name, will be released. (Source: CBS, May 2005)
