Plan to launch "Elvisology" qualification for tribute artistes: If you passed an ology you could become a scientist, according to the classic TV advert. But a new qualification, the Elvisology, is more likely to lead to a career in a white jump suit than a white coat. The course is the brainchild of author and music fan Peter Phillips, who announced his plan at the press launch of this year's Porthcawl Elvis Festival, which he began in 2004. Having been successful in discovering and helping to launch new tribute artists through the autumn event and the spin-off Welsh Elvis Idol competition, Mr Phillips thought the time was right to formalise the process. He said: 'I'm in touch with the South East Wales Open College Network and I'm also talking it through with Bridgend College. 'The course will probably consist of existing learning modules in performing arts, business management and marketing and new specialist modules for business planning in the Elvis market, and performance in the Elvis market.' I anticipate the Elvisology will be gained over a two-week residential course, although this could change, and would rank alongside a BTec.' It will be for people who want to actually position themselves professionally in the Elvis market, which is enormous and highly lucrative.' Nineteen-year-old Dave Smith, of Cwmaman, Aberdare, who ditched his job in Tesco to become a full-time tribute artist after being crowned Welsh Elvis Idol 2005, said the course may be a good option for those who also want to reach for the stars.' I think it could help people get to grips with the business side of things,' he said. This year's Porthcawl Elvis Festival, the largest event of its kind in Europe, takes place between September 29 and October 1. Highlights include the world premiere of the Elvis Story musical at the Grand Pavilion. The heats of this year's Welsh Elvis Idol take place at Bridgend's McArthurGlen Designer Outlet on Saturday, June 10. The paper was impressed enough at the Elvis phenomenon to interview almost anyone who would talk about the liver-lipped, hip-swivelling 22-year-old, riding high on hits like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," and "Don't be Cruel." There were stories about Elvis the marketing phenomenon, and how his crafty manager, Col. Tom Parker, was selling some 60 items, including Elvis busts, glow-in-the-dark photos, bobby sox, lipstick (in Hound Dog orange, Heartbreak Hotel pink and Tutti Frutti red) and "a pomade for kids with unruly hair." There were also plenty of stories about his hypnotic effect on women, complete with interviews with females from 4 to 64. A cutline under photos of shrieking fans read: "Flash cameras popping made the arena look like a World War II battle. Psychologist saw nothing abnormal in squeals." However, Thomson noted he really couldn't hear much actual music, because of the sustained screaming of the 23,000 fans who attended the back-to-back performances. "I've heard it said that the lurchin' urchin, Elvis the Pelvis, hasn't any kind of singing voice, and I was anxious to hear if there was anything in the rumour," Thomson complained. "Frankly, after all of his rock 'n' roll ballads, delivered with a ferocious intensity and manoeuvres known in the burlesque business as "all-out grinds and bumps," I still have no way of knowing. I just didn't hear one note or word he sang." (News. Source: TheStar.com)

Graceland not happy visuals of DVDs released: Yesterday, EIN and other major Elvis websites published news and images relating to the single disc editions of the Aloha and Comeback Special DVDs and the six "genre" CD albums. While our story made it clear the artwork for the remaining three "genre" albums was provisional, this was not also stated for the DVDs, the visuals for which it turns out are quite different to the final artwork. In response, EPE's Todd Morgan issued a strongly worded statement published on Elvis News. In addition, EIN and a number of other sites were asked by Sony BMG to remove the news story from their sites (which EIN promptly did). This action was redundant in light of the message from EPE. EIN believes that even if the original advice to sites failed to note the DVD artwork was final this is not a major issue. The story served as important pr for the releases, and while some fans may believe the story was misleading, an alternative strategy on EPE's part would have been simply to draw site owner's attention to the erroneous artwork and we all could have amended the story. It is unfortunate that this matter has been made more than it needed to be. Having said this (and removed the offending images), Sony BMG Australia is planning to release the single disc DVD editions of Aloha & the Comeback Special on 7 August. The Special Edition of "68" features a newly edited and expanded version and video collection of fun moments from throughout the shooting of the special and a new photo slide show (total running time: 94min). The Special Edition of "Aloha" features again post-concert "insert" songs and in addition (compared to to the deluxe version) a new photo slide (total running time: 87min). Also that month Sony BMG Australia intends to release the three remaining "genre" albums, Elvis Live, Elvis R&B and Elvis Movies. EIN has re-published the other news about the planned "Elvis on Ed Sullivan" DVD below. (News, Source: EIN/Sony BMG)

Through June 30, 2006, visitors to Elvis Presley's Graceland will save $3.00 off their Platinum Tour ticket when they present a gas receipt and a coupon downloaded from the free online Graceland Trip Planner. http://www.elvis.com/gracelandtours/ The new program called "Tank you, Tank you very much" was developed as a way to help visitors planning a trip to Memphis and feeling the pinch of increased gas prices around the country. "Over 75% of the visitors to Graceland arrive by automobile, so we want to let them know we understand the prices are high, and thank them for coming," stated Graceland spokesperson Kevin Kern. Original 'Clambake' LP fetching high prices: With FTD to release the Clambake soundtrack in July it is interesting to see copies of the original vinyl album selling for high prices on ebay and through dealers. In particular, original 'mono' editions and copies of the LP with the color picture insert are selling for up to US$130.00. The Clambake film and soundtrack are often maligned, yet the film is an easy-to-watch, fun 90 minutes and apart from the excellent 'bonus songs' on the soundtrack album, there are several first-rate recordings in You Don't Know Me; The Girl I Never Loved, and A House That Has Everything. (News, Source: ebay/EIN)

Philadelphia Inquirer not impressed with CKX/Cirque du Soleil plans for Elvis: Some biographers say Elvis Presley's life - that would be when he was chubby and really rich and into booze and pills - was like a circus. Now it is - literally. CKX, which owns Elvis Presley Enterprises, has made a deal with Cirque du Soleil to create a series of embarrassments based on the King. (Is that him rumbling in his grave?) The Canada-based troupe will also create a bunch of multimedia, interactive museums called Elvis Experiences. ("Experience firsthand what it was like to be desperate Aging Elvis, trapped in Vegas revues and bad TV specials!") The Cirque atrocities will take about 18 months to develop. The circus is also set to debut its Beatles show next month in Sin City. (News, Source: Philadelphia Inquirer)

With unimpeded access to the young performer, Wertheimer was able to capture the unguarded and everyday moments in Elvis' life during that crucial year, a year that took him from Tupelo, Mississippi to the silver screen, and to the verge of international stardom and his crowning as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll.” As Alfred Wertheimer photographed Elvis during 1956, and again in 1958, he created classic images that are spontaneous, unrehearsed and completely without artifice.

Aussie chart split could benefit Elvis: The Brazin group of retail chains, including Sanity, HMV and Virgin, have withdrawn their sales figures from the ARIA charts in Australia. ARIA has traditionally been the only recognised national indicator of the public's popular music taste in Australia. Without sales from the Brazin group, ARIA will account for only 850 of the nearly 1,300 stores which previously contibuted sales figures for the chart. The upshot of the chart split is that the the Brazin-free ARIA chart could reflect music from an older demographic if it relies more heavily on sales from department stores such as K-Mart and Big W, which are usually slow to stock new or alternative music. This would see back catalog acts like Elvis more likely to feature in the album and DVD charts. The withdrawal of sales figures has arisen because of a a battle over technology, with Brazin claiming its technology, which allows daily updating of charts, is more sophisticated than that used by ARIA. Brazin is pushing for the charts to be more up-to-date, not a week old when published. (News, Source: Herald Sun)

EPE softens stance on ETA's: Elvis impersonators can relax: No one's coming after their bespangled jumpsuits. At least not anytime soon." It's not even on the radar screen right now," said Robert F.X. Sillerman, the head of the entertainment company that owns the legal rights to Elvis Presley's name. CKX Inc. took control of Elvis Presley Enterprises last year, and Sillerman wondered aloud in a recent interview with The New York Times if the company should do something about "unauthorized Elvis impersonators." That shook up the pompadoured crowd of impersonators in Memphis, Las Vegas, London and elsewhere around the world, and since then Sillerman has backed off a bit." The only comment I have made about the future of Elvis impersonators was simply an answer to a reporter's hypothetical question," Sillerman said in a statement from his New York headquarters." In truth, the issue is not something we at CKX are actively looking into." Impersonators still worry about an uncertain future. "Nobody seems to have any answers," said Ed "Doc" Franklin, founder of "Images of the King," one of the oldest and best-known Elvis impersonator contests. Held in Memphis for five straight days on the anniversary of Presley's death at Graceland on Aug. 16, 1977, it attracts contestants of all ages, races, nationalities, even sex." It's such a worldwide thing, you can't just jump out there and say, `Hey, wait a minute. You can't do this anymore, boys.' It would be like a big revolt," said Franklin, a retired veterinarian who took care of Presley's horses and other pets. Elvis Presley Enterprises, the former business arm of Presley's estate, has a long and successful history of shutting down interlopers trying to horn in on its business. But most of those battles focused on trinket or souvenir hawkers, and the impersonators, who like to call themselves "tribute artists," were largely left alone. The impersonators could be embarrassing at times, but Presley fans enjoyed having them around, and shutting them down for violating the estate's publicity rights would be tricky. It's one thing to tell a souvenir maker to quit putting Elvis' face on coffee mugs, but it's something quite different to shut down a singer because he favors white jumpsuits, rhinestones and sideburns." It's entertainment, which has traditionally been accorded a wide scope of protection," said Roberta Kwall, a DePaul University law professor and specialist on publicity rights. If an impersonator includes a bit of his own style in his act, it becomes an interpretation - or even a parody - rather than a mere copy of Presley's work." It's a bit of a moving target," Kwall said. Matt Lewis, an impersonator who has toured the world and now performs 12 times a week at the Imperial Palace casino in Las Vegas, says CKX would be hurting itself if it went after Elvis acts." Elvis impersonators drive the popularity of Elvis," Lewis said." We get new fans all the time, which sells merchandise, sells CDs, which promotes Elvis' name. People don't go out and buy my T-shirt after the show - they get an Elvis T-shirt somewhere." Lewis works for one of the few licensed Elvis acts around, the "Legends in Concert" show owned by Las Vegas-based Onstage Entertainment Inc. Onstage CEO Tim Parrott said his company signed an agreement with the Elvis estate in 1995 authorizing the use of an impersonator. A crackdown on unlicensed Elvises could help the company, he said." If they start closing other people down, we'll be the survivor," he said.Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, and her Elvis Presley Enterprise sold the rights to her father's name to CKX last year along with Graceland's souvenir shops and museums for about $100 million in cash and stock. She retained title to the house itself, but CKX controls it, too, through a 90-year lease. Elvis Presley Enterprises became a subsidiary of CKX, which also owns the "American Idol" TV show, a Hollywood talent-management company and most of the marketing rights to boxer Muhammad Ali's name and likeness. Michael Hoover, a professional Elvis impersonator who took over the "Images of the King" contest two years ago, said he is a little concerned but expects the show to continue. "If it comes down to somebody saying you can't wear that wig or you can't wear that shirt or you can't sing that song, that will upset a lot of people," he said. "You would see some really serious reaction from the impersonators." (News/Almost Elvis, Source: http://tinyurl.com/o7vv9/ Charmaine Voisine)

CKX will also receive royalty payments on various aspects of its intellectual property used in the Elvis Presley Projects.
The parties have agreed to open at least one touring show in Europe and/or Asia and one "Elvis Experience" outside of the United States by 2008. Beginning in 2009, at least one Elvis Presley Project will be opened in each of the next six years. Beginning in 2014, at least one Elvis Presley Project will be opened every two years during the next eight years, through 2021. Shows in Las Vegas are not included in this arrangement at this time. EIN Comment: This announcement is arguably the most important news since CKX bought an interest in EPE. If successful the venture will be a key driver in ensuring Elvis' legacy is publicly exposed and appreciated for the next 15 years. Sony BMG would arguably have been hoping for a better showing, as at such a low position the sales spike is not particularly significant. On other Billboard charts, 'HitStory' entered the Top Digital Albums chart at #22 and the Top Country Albums chart at #60. 'Heartbreak Hotel' rose one place to #13 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. A month after the singer moved in, Heartbreak Hotel hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, ultimately ending any privacy he had in the neighbourhood. Fans lined the neighbourhood streets and police frequently had to be called in. A Life magazine article from August 1956 had pictures of teenage girls sitting with their ears pressed to his bedroom wall and picking through the grass in his yard for souvenirs. The commotion became so intense that Elvis moved his bedroom to the back of the house. While Presley lived in the home, he appeared on Ed Sullivan's TV show, starred in Love Me Tender, bought his pink Cadillac and posed in his gold lame suit. Hazen and Freeman have partly restored it and uncovered the wallpaper printed with musical notes and instruments Presley added in the hall. The porch the singer converted into a game room and where he rehearsed and recorded remains as it was, with star-shaped lighting fixtures and trophy cases. Outside is a swimming pool, at the time the biggest residential pool in the city. "The house is like an archaeological dig," Hazen said. Predictably at number one we have Elvis’ Las Vegas years. It had been assumed Geller was out of the bidding as he registered several bids under his own name early in the auction. However it is now known he re-entered the bidding with two partners using a different bid addy. "We are unbelievably pleased. This is a piece of history," Geller said by phone from England. "We intend to restore it to its old glory. We would like to bring sick children there (for tours), Palestinian children, Israeli children, American children," the Israeli-born Geller said. "Hopefully one day we might get approval to turn it into a museum." See earlier story below dated 15 May 2006 (News, Source: Reuters/Sanja Meegin)
EPE wasn't interested in buying Audobon Drive: After the sale of 1043 Audubon, Elvis' home before he bought his Graceland Mansion, Elvis News asked Todd Morgan's EPE if they considered buying this house, here is his reaction: 'We did not consider purchasing 1034 Audubon. If the house at 1034 Audubon Drive were closer to Graceland and were not sitting in a neighborhood zoned as purely residential, perhaps we would have deemed it a potentially viable addition to our Graceland tour operations and might have considered trying to buy it. The kind of money owners Mike Freeman and Cindy Hazen were looking for was way beyond our budget for new archival acquisitions at this time and there would have been no sure way for us to recoup the investment. All our energy and resources for perservation are focused on Graceland Mansion and our vast Elvis archives. We felt confident that the future of 1034 Audubon would be "safe" when we saw that the bidding was exceedingly far above market value for homes in its neighborhood. Any of the bidders surely had to value its Elvis history to be willing to pay so much. Some fans suggested that we buy the house at 1034 Audubon and move it to the Graceland visitor center property to make it available for tours. It's an intriguing idea, but it would have been prohibitively expensive in addition to the purchase price, and there is no room in the budget for such an undertaking in our plans for revamping the visitor center properties.' The Best Ever Quote About Elvis: Arguably the greatest and most insightful quote ever about Elvis came from another musical icon, Leonard Bernstein. When talking to Richard Clurman, an editor of Time magazine, Bernstein said, "Elvis Presley is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century." What about Picasso?, Clurman wondered. "No", Bernstein insisted. "It's Elvis. He introduced the beat to everything and he changed everything - music, language, clothes. It's a whole new social revolution - the sixties came from it." (Spotlight, Source: Bill Beeny) New movie, "The King": While it is called 'The King' and its main character is named Elvis, we don't think it has anything to do with Elvis Presley. This is the film synopsis: Elvis Valderez is a twenty-one year old dreamer who has just been honorably discharged from the US Navy. With his duffle bag and rifle, he travels back to his hometown of Corpus Christi Texas, where he intends to seek out his father--a man he has only heard about from his Mexican mother, who has since passed away. Elvis quickly discovers that his father, David Sandow, is now the pastor of a thriving Baptist church, and has a family of his own--a beautiful wife, Twyla, and two picture-perfect children, Malerie and Paul. While seeking out his father at church, Elvis unwittingly strikes up a conversation with sixteen-year old Malerie and there's an immediate, unspoken attraction between them. Elvis then waits for his father after church and follows him and his family to their suburban neighborhood, where he approaches David in front of their Norman Rockwell style home. The encounter is brief. David wants nothing to do with Elvis, who is an uncomfortable reminder of his own wayward past and a well-kept secret from his children and his parishioners. Rejected, Elvis resolves to leave this happy family to themselves. However, Elvis can't shake the image of Malerie, his half sister, and can't stop himself from befriending her. The relationship soon develops into something romantic and natural taboos are quickly discarded. Through his courtship of Malerie, Elvis begins to slowly infiltrate the family, thus setting the stage for the unleashing of violence and a tragedy of biblical proportions. (News, Source: Amber Smith) Elvis World's Bill Burk assesses American Idol "elvis" performances: AMERICAN IDOL has presented its "Elvis" themed show and each of the four contestants sang two Elvis songs.
EW graded the first round thusly:
1. Chris Daughtry, Suspicious Minds
2. Taylor Hicks, Jailhouse Rock
3. Elliott Yamin, If I Can Dream
4. Katherine McPhee, Hound Dog
In the second round, EW judged it:
1. Gamin, Trouble
2. Daughtry, A Little Less Conversation
3. Hicks, In The Ghetto
4. McPhee, Can't Help Falling In Love With You
The three judges were of the opinion Hicks' rendition of Ghetto was the best of that round, but EW felt Hicks was more "mouthing words," than expressing the deep feelings that Elvis poured into that song, which has long been our own favorite Elvis song.
McPhee just didn't have it tonight and it's our opinion she will be voted off tomorrow night. For one, we feel it was just too hard for a female to sing Elvis songs. Too, her selection of songs were not the best. However, we understand the contestants did not have a choice of the full range of Elvis songs; rather, a limited choice. McPhee, we felt, would have done much better doing ballads.
Postscript: Bill tells us the public has voted and Chris Daughtry (the bald headed one) is GONE!, while Katherine McPhee remains IN ... by the skin of her teeth! (Bill Burk's Elvis World Online)

Could Elvis win American Idol?: Legend (erroneously) has it that in his struggling years Elvis Presley aspired to appear on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour (the American Idol of the 1950s), but flunked the tryout. A writer named Lea Brandenburg included the story in a list of inspiring factoids for the Web site creativityforlife.com. Her version goes this way: “In the 1950s, one of the best ways struggling new talent could start on the road to fame and fortune was to appear on a nationally televised program called the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. A singer from Tennessee tried out for the show, but failed the audition. Today few people under 50 remember the Ted Mack Amateur Hour or any of the ‘winners"’ of the audition the singer failed, but every year the legend of the young man from Tennessee, Elvis Presley, grows.” For comparison’s sake, some of those who did win on Mack’s highly rated TV show were Pat Boone and the Rock ‘n Roll Trio, a Memphis group that included Tommy and Dorsey Burnette and Paul Burlison, all of whom became well-known in their own right. True or not, the question took on a quirky relevance last week when American Idol sent its four remaining competitors to Graceland for some instruction from record exec Tommy Mottola. Proving that in pop music as in life, what goes around comes around. Sooner or later. Critics "all shook up" over Scots rock & roll/Elvis claim: FOR some, rock’n’roll was born in Memphis, Tennessee, home of the blues; for others it was Tupelo, Mississippi, birthplace of Elvis Presley. Now Scotland is being promoted as the spiritual home of the stirring rhythms that gave the world the King, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Scotlandnow, a link from a website for expats produced by a Scottish executive agency launched by Jack McConnell, also claims Scotland is responsible for inventing country and western music.
An article on the arts and culture page at www.friendsofscotland.gov.uk/Scotlandnow claims that the 250,000 Scots who fled to the New World in the 18th century brought with them folk songs that eventually mutated into rock’n’roll. “A wintry night in 1746. Somewhere in the icy swirl of the Irish Sea a young man stands and gazes over the stern of a creaking brigantine, staring into the blackness which smothers the homeland he is leaving behind forever,” the article states. “A few others gather around him. Another man produces a fiddle and as the wind bites down, Scottish voices carry into the sea night, singing songs of love and protest, loss and defiance, hope and despair. “A hundred years later, in the high, rugged, country of the Appalachian mountains, the great-grandson of the boy on the ship sings these same songs. Their fiddles now augmented by lightning-picked five-string banjo and driving acoustic guitar. “The years pass and the music travels south, towards the Mississippi, where it mixes with the spirituals and chain-gang gospels sung by slaves under the hot Delta sun. “Another century later, in the 1940s, in Nashville Tennessee, Hank Williams stands in the ice-blue spotlight of the Grand Old Opry, singing his cracked, haunting songs. A short hop forward, a decade later, on September 9th 1956, Elvis Presley, explodes out of 50m TV screens across America and at a stroke, popular culture is changed forever.” It then describes Glaswegians clamouring to watch Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. “Witherspoon’s roots, like those of Cash, Presley and the music they played, can be traced back to Scotland.” Professor Richard A Peterson, of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, is doubtful about the claims. “It is safe to say that if the Scottish part of the British Isles had never existed US country music would be much as it is today,” he said. Dr Ian Russell, director of the Elphinstone Institute at Aberdeen University and an expert in traditional music, said: “You could substitute the word Scottish with English or Irish and or in other contexts with Welsh, French or African.” However Rob Gibson, the Nationalist MSP and folk musician, believes Scots have played a disproportionate role in moulding modern American music. The author of the book Plaids & Bandanas, which explores Scots music in America, claimed Caledonian culture spread much further than the Appalachian mountains. “There are a lot of cowboy tunes that come from Scotland including the Aberdeenshire whaling ballad Fareweel tae Tarwathie, which became Railroad Corral,” he said. Last year Yale University Professor Willie Ruff claimed the roots of the gospel music of the Deep South lie in the Scottish Hebrides rather than Africa. He claimed the call-and-response form of musical worship stemmed from the Gaelic psalms taught to black slaves by plantation owners from the Western Isles. Elvis: Frame By Frame: With Douglas Brode's 'Elvis Cinema & Popular Culture' due for release on 30 June 2006 comes word of another serious look at Elvis' film career. Bill Bram, who wrote the text for the JAT publication "Elvis Presley As The One Called Charro", is searching for a publisher for "Elvis: Frame By Frame". A large portion of the book will consist of direct quotations from the interviewees, edited to create an interesting narrative of each film. It is a running commentary on Elvis’s films. In addition the book will contain information obtained directly from the movie files. Decades old questions regarding particular scenes and songs, believed to have been filmed, will be addressed and answered. Readers will find chapters on King Creole, Kid Galahad, Roustabout, Double Trouble, and Live A Little, Love A Little among others. The book concludes with a fascinating chapter on the Elvis movie that should have been: A Star Is Born. Any publicity is good publicity: Proving the old addage yet again, following our review of the revisionist book, Elvis Through My Eyes, by Heart Lanier Shapre as told by Jimmy Denson, online sales of the book spiked, rising more than 300,000 spots on Amazon for several days before dropping sharply. ( Ray Walker, "The Jordanaires") Jamey Tucker says: "I don't know if anyone could argue with the bass singer of the world famous Jordanaires. I spent some time with Ray this past week at RCA's Studio B on Music Row. It was in that building in 1960 that Ray first met, and then performed with Elvis Presley. The interview is part of "The Gospel According to Elvis" that runs at 10pm Sunday night. I've travelled to Graceland, interviewed one of Elvis' former girlfriends, and researched tons of quotes about the King's spiritual life and faith background. I find the story fascinating. Here's the man who ushered in the sexual revolution, but yet he is often credited with bringing Christianity into American pop culture. It's hard to argue. Before Elvis hit the scene, religion and faith were not discussed that much outside of the home and the church. People were more private with their beliefs than people are today. Ask someone from "the Greatest Generation" and they'll tell you while they went to church regularly and prayed, they very seldom felt comfortable talking about it. But when Elvis sang "Precious Lord Hold My Hand" and "Peace in the Valley" on network television, not only did young people begin to shimmy and shake to the radio, some started to talk about their belief in God. There's so much about Elvis that has been produced and printed and broadcast dozens of times. But I don't recall seeing that much on the faith behind the King of Rock and Roll. I think you'll find the story and the subject as interesting as I do. And I'd love to hear your thoughts, and maybe even your experiences. Did Elvis bring people closer to God...or did he lead us farther away?" But some people say they've seen Presley alive years after he supposedly was put to rest on the grounds of his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tenn. He must have gotten tired of being the king of rock 'n' roll and faked his death, some surmise. Perhaps he took up residence in a smallish Midwestern town with a funny name. Director Adam Muskiewicz and producer Dan Bliss were in Kalamazoo recently to do interviews for their documentary "The Truth About Elvis.'' "We're very excited about our interviews here. We've always known that Memphis, Vegas and Kalamazoo were our keystone cities'' for the mythology surrounding the legendary musician, Muskiewicz said Wednesday. In the spring of 1988, the supermarket tabloid Weekly World News printed a story that Elvis had been spotted in a Kalamazoo Burger King restaurant. Gazette reporter Tom Haroldson wrote about the sighting report that May. He found the woman quoted in the tabloid story, Louise Welling, of Vicksburg, who said she had seen Elvis at a Vicksburg grocery; she said it was her daughter who had seen Elvis at the Burger King. The story, former Gazette Editor James R. Mosby Jr. said Wednesday, then ``took on a life of its own, and it took off not only around the country but around the world.'' The Gazette story moved on the Associated Press wire and made its way into newspapers such as the New York Times. ``Then suddenly one day Haroldson's getting phone calls from the BBC (British Broadcasting Corp.) wanting to interview him,'' Mosby said. On Wednesday morning, Muskiewicz interviewed Mosby and Kalamazoo Mayor Hannah McKinney on camera. He interviewed Welling later on Wednesday and Haroldson on Thursday. Before meeting the filmmakers, Mosby suspected the film might be a spoof. ``I thought they were going to do a put-on or put-down of the whole thing, or of Kalamazoo, but it didn't appear that way at all. They appeared to be very much into the Elvis thing, and very much into why there's this myth that keeps popping up and bouncing around almost 30 years after he died.'' Muskiewicz, an actor from Cleveland who has been in independent films, teamed in 2004 with Bliss, a producer of poker DVDs in Los Angeles, to look into the Elvis mystery. Muskiewicz said he thought, after hearing stories of Elvis still walking the earth, that it would be a great documentary subject, but only if filmmakers approached it seriously. "There is nothing poking fun or making fun of anybody in this movie at all,'' Muskiewicz said. Welling's story had Muskiewicz wondering about Elvis, who would be 71 years old today, after he spoke with her Wednesday. After 18 years, he said, "she's absolutely sure'' she saw Elvis at the checkout lane of the Vicksburg Harding's store, now a Felpausch store. Muskiewicz said he asked her how she knew it was Elvis. `"Obviously it was 10 or 11 years after Elvis had died, so presumably his appearance would've changed a little bit,'' he said. "She made it clear, like so many people have said, when you're next to Elvis you know, simply because the man had an aura about him.'' Muskiewicz said he hopes to have "The Truth About Elvis'' ready for a premiere on Aug. 16, 2007 -- the 30th anniversary of Elvis' official date of death. In the meantime, he will keep looking for evidence and stories and would like those who believe they have seen Elvis to contact him at www.truthabout-elvis.com. Priscilla to possibly star in London West End play: Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla Presley is thinking of performing live on stage for the first time in a comedy play, which is scheduled to take place at London's West End. The 60-year old Presley feels the play may be an interesting opportunity for her to exhibit her versatility as an actress. She has films like The Naked Gun, and The Hayley Wagner to her credit and now she is all set to perform for the first time in front of a live audience. "I've been offered a fantastic role that can't say too much about, but it's a comedy with a serious message. I've never really done stage before but that's the challenge of being an actress," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying. Update- The Death of Elvis Presley? - DNA evidence flawed: There has been a huge response to our article on the Elvis DNA findings. From members of the Memphis Mafia, to the Presley Commission, believers and non-believers, we have so far received more than 30 comments. We have added a large number of your comments to the article today and will continue to add more as they are received. In particular, author of an upcoming book on the Elvis is alive conspiracy theory, Patrick Lacy, has drawn our attention to the story (discredited a number of years ago) of Lisa Johansen (who claimed to be the "real" Lisa Marie Presley). The direct links between Ms Johansen and both Bill and Andrew Beeny are a further major blow to the Beeny claims, and EIN will be publishing a follow-up article in the next week or so on the implications of this issue. Click to view EIN's extensive listing of Elvis books being released in 2006-07 Elvis & Tom Hanks connection: Screen superstar, Tom Hanks, wrote in a recent article for the New York Times: "In October, after my final shot as Robert Langdon in "The Da Vinci Code," a birthday cake big enough to feed our entire unit was rolled out, candles blazing. In what must have been a divinely timed coincidence, I wrapped "The Da Vinci Code" the same day Dan Striepeke, my makeup man for 19 years, turned 75. I had earned enough industry clout, and learned enough, to choose as the keystone of my squad this 40-year veteran of movie making, who had given Elvis Presley his tan in "Viva Las Vegas" and Laurence Olivier his Roman nose in "Spartacus." Most civilians think makeup men are little more than hovering sprites who powder noses. But they are true artists, often unsung, who imprint films with the soft touch of their brushes and the hard work of their craft. Their creation, which will be examined on the big screen for as many years as the film holds its audience, is the most physical manifestation of an actor's interpretation of his role. In a partnership any actor would envy, Danny protected the exterior finish of my characters so I could ponder my roles without having to explain things that can't be explained anyway. On both movies that were fun ("Catch Me if You Can") and ridiculously tough ("Turner & Hooch"), Danny juggled my mercurial attitudes and the condition of my skin, offering his ear for my complaints and altering my body chemistry when necessary with a new facial scrub, a homemade bran muffin or a glass of cabernet. My makeup man and I worked around the world and at every studio in Hollywood. With my face as his canvas, he turned me into a cop, an astronaut, an Army Ranger, an FBI agent, a Master of the Universe, a Slavic tourist and even Santa Claus. Through a freezing Chicago winter on "Road to Perdition," he showed the violence of my character with a slightly broken nose and eyes framed by the harsh lines of my hat and mustache. "Cast Away" was all Danny and hair stylist Kathy Blondell. As I lost weight to show four years of being marooned in the South Pacific, Danny created scars, sunburns, rashes, rotted teeth and seeping wounds. On "Forrest Gump," Danny took me from a teenager to a Vietnam soldier to parenthood as Sally Field died of cancer, earning him and his team one of "Gump's" Academy Award nominations. From his perch at the makeup chair, Danny told of his career, dazzling me by the titles alone: "The Ten Commandments," "Kismet," "Giant," "Around the World in 80 Days," "The Sound of Music." I'd demand a story about Elvis, and Danny would tell of Presley's gentlemanly manners and squirt-gun playfulness. I'd hear about the Memphis Mafia, Ann-Margret and how "Harum Scarum" was a piece of junk. In January, Danny called my office with news: He was done. Done, done. No more 5 a.m. calls; no more night shoots in exotic locations like Moscow, Monument Valley or Stage 5 at Culver Studios. He had other things he wanted to do besides put goop on my face in an increasingly difficult effort to make me look good.
