Chandler Travis, of Incredible Casual, Philharmonic and Modern Maturity fame, reunited with his old musical partner Steve Shook for a breezy take on "Good Luck Charm." The song also gave the two, who performed as Travis and Shook and the Club Wow back in the '70s, a chance to re-connect with each other.
"Cape Cod Covers: The King," a 20-song CD by some of the Cape and Islands most popular performers, is more than just a tribute to Elvis Presley. The newly released recording is a fund-raiser for Angel Flight New England, a volunteer corps of over 1200 private pilots who provide free transportation to patients in need of life saving medical care, as well as to their families. David Wood, an Angel Flight pilot, initiated the project. Wood who owns and runs Puff the Magic, a tobacco store in Hyannis, is also a musician who played drums for Herb Reed and The Platters for 15 years. Taking advantage of his musical background, Wood came up with the concept album and enlisted the assistance on a diverse cross section of local performers. Wood said it was a recording of "All Shook Up" by the Randy Frost Trio that inspired him to put together the CD. Wood, who played drums on the recording, liked what he heard and decided that an Elvis cover compilation might be way to raise some money for the airborne angels of mercy. "Everyone love Elvis," Wood surmised, also recognizing that that the Elvis songbook was varied enough that there was something in it for everybody. The songs on the CD cut across the entire Elvis landscape: edgy rockabilly, pop rockers and ballads, Hollywood camp, and grandiose Las Vegas epics. The compilation is a mixed bag of interpretations and results. Among the high points are Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish's driving "Little Sister, 57 Heavy's funky "Hound Dog," and The Greenhead's down in the alley "Reconsider Baby." Not surprisingly, Link Montana (aka Bruce Maclean) is also among the artists who nailed their number. Maclean, who just about channels Ricky Nelson when he performs and also includes several Elvis numbers in his repertoire, is well within his element singing "I Gotta Know" and it shows. The song was recorded in his own Maclean Studios in Orleans. "It's an obscure one that I've been playing for years. Nobody would know that it's an Elvis song unless they were a real a real aficionado," Maclean said. "I like a song that's so intrinsically good that people will like it even if they never heard it before." Most folks have heard "Love Me Tender," before. The sweet and simple ballad is one of Elvis' signature songs, so it isn't surprising to find it among the Cape covers. What is surprising, however that it's sung by The Ticks, a female trio better known for their irreverence than for their sentimentality. "What's funny is they're a punk band and I was expecting something like that," Wood said. "They came in with an acoustic guitar and sang three-part harmony like angels." Emma Levy, who sang lead, said that they group definitely went against type. "Everybody thinks of us as just rock 'n' roll. We thought: let's try something different. It gave the a chance to show off their harmonies" Which you really can't hear with loud punk music." We always loved playing 'Good Luck Charm.' It wasn't one of the songs that we used a lot because it's a pretty mellow little thing. It's not one of those things that hits you over the head. But we always loved playing it and never forgot it," Travis said. "When David came up with this idea it served a dual purpose for me, because I've been trying to get Steve to play more again. And got in the studio and he had so much fun. We've had a couple of practices since they and they've both been so great," said Travis, adding that he and Shook are working on some new material. The CD is expected to be the first in a yearly series of recordings each one devoted to covering the songs of a celebrated group or singer. All we be fundraisers for Angel Flight NE, Angel Flight NE, begun in 1996, has answered 30,000 requests and flown eight million miles all free of charge. Woods, who's flown approximately 100 flights for the organization, said that his reasons for volunteering weren't entirely altruistic. "To be perfectly honest, I wanted to increase my flying hours," said Wood, who's had his pilot's license for about two years. "Nobody wanted to fly with me because they thought they were going to die." But once he took to the air for Angel Flight and met his passengers his outlook changed. "You realize how short life is and how precious it is. You think you have troubles but, these people have the greatest of obstacles," Wood said. "It's incredible."
