"Elvis' Greatest Rock Hits"
The track selection is also pleasing. There is a nice mix of the usual suspects (Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, Too Much, All Shook Up) interspersed with other seminal recordings which often get lost (eg. Party, Dixieland Rock, Wear My Ring Around Your Neck). It is a real thrill listening to superb recordings such as I Got Stung and King Creole, particularly if it's been a while since you have given these a spin. Elvis' vocals are machine gun like on Hard Headed Woman, and Tutti Frutti evokes the thrillful exuberance and joy of our youth. On Rip It Up Elvis does just that; I Need Your Love Tonight is a gloriously sung gem, and Mean Woman Blues is a potent reminder of what a great voice Elvis has. On Long Tall Sally, Elvis comes close to matching Little Richard's seminal recording; it's always good to hear A Big Hunk O' Love, and who can resist singing along to Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do? The album's tracks are a strong and eclectic mix which are as alive and engaging today as they were more than 50 years ago when they were originally released. The liner notes for 'Elvis rock' were penned by Michael Hill and they invite us to relive the "magic" that is Elvis singing rock 'n' roll. As Hill observes: "If you like it, you feel it, you can't help but move to it...And once you feel it...don't even think about staying still". The genre series would undoubtedly fare much better sales wise if they were mid-priced rather than full-priced releases. And if Sony BMG is serious about bringing Elvis' music to "genre" sections of the music buying public they need to develop a targeted marketing strategy to achieve such an aim. Verdict: An aurally satisfying release which will have you dancing in the aisles. Buy this one and relive "The King" at his rockin' best.
