"Heartbreak Hotel" cover artwork: Here is the cover art of the 2006 re-release of "Heartbreak Hotel". The single artwork will emulate that of the EP that was released in April of 1956, as well as the artwork of the original single that was released in a generic RCA paper sleeve.

As for the entire series: each single will be individually packaged in a dynamic mini sleeve reflective of the original single artwork. Preserving the look of the original 45's, each CD will be pressed on black plastic with grooves to mimic vinyl.

Presley's famous first RCA Studios session, recorded just days after his 21st birthday, produced "Heartbreak Hotel." Recorded on January 10th and 11th in 1956, and released just a few weeks later, the epic single spent 8 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 chart at #1. The single crossed genres, topping the country charts for 17 weeks and reaching #3 on the R&B charts. Sony BMG commemorates the 50th anniversary of this legendary recording by re-releasing the 'Heartbreak Hotel' single on January 10, 2006.

Huge boost for Parkes Elvis Festival: 'Things From The King' is a totally Australian owned, private collection of Elvis' personal items displayed by his friend, Joe Esposito.

It will be featured in the Coventry Room during the annual Elvis Festival,in January 2006, in Parkes, NSW. The exhibition is a private collection featuring over 60 items, either owned, or connected with Elvis Presley.

The exhibition features an audio guided tour by Elvis' long time friend, Joe Esposito, who worked with Elvis for nearly 20 years and was the best man at his marriage to Priscilla (Joe does not appear in person).

The collection is owned by one of Australia's premier children's entertainers, Greg Page - better known as the Yellow Wiggle. Page has had an affinity with Elvis ever since visiting Elvis' home, Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee.

"It had such a profound impact on me - seeing where Elvis lived, feeling his presence in the house where he walked the halls, and more importantly, finding out about the man behind the legend."

Now Page wants to share that experience with Australians who have never been to Graceland. People who want to experience the King's story, and see his own personal items, as his story is told by one of his best friends, Joe Esposito. For Page, this is an extension upon his love for Elvis and the music that he made. (News, Source: Parkes Champion Post)

Elvis sighted at Disneyland: Last week, following a pre-Thanksgiving Day visit to Disneyland, a group of park regulars—they dislike being called annual passholders or APs—contacted obe-mediaone.com with an interesting story involving It's a Small World Holiday and Elvis Presley.

While floating past Small World's version of England, this group of friends, which included three Southern Californians and two others from Salt Lake City and London, England, were admiring "the English" Christmas decorations. Thinking it was an English tradition, one of the guys from California asked if there was a pickle hidden in the British Christmas tree. What he was actually referring to was the myth of the German Christmas Tree pickle ornament, but that's another story.

The end result, however, was that all five of these friends began to closely scrutinize the British Christmas tree in It's a Small World Holiday. They didn't find a pickle, but what they did find was just as unexpected. There, about a third of the way up from the bottom and slightly off-center of the artificial tree, was a large "gapping opening" among the neat and tidy rows of festive decorations. Recessed inside the opening, as if peering out from deep within the tree, was a face.

According to one member of the group, "It startled me at first, because I couldn't make out what it was—then I saw a face, which seemed spooky—then I realized it was Elvis, which was just weird." (News, Source: obe-mediaone.com)

The Man Who Made Elvis Laugh: Sammy Shore, the comedian who opened for Elvis between 1969 and 1971, is working on a TV Show/Book/movie project entitled "The Man Who Made Elvis Laugh". He is currently working on the contracts for these three aspects of the project. (News, Source: Elvis Matters /Elvis News)

Marty Lacker talks to EIN (Part 2): In the second part of our candid interview with Memphis Mafia member, Marty Lacker, Marty talks about the Memphis Mafia, the women in Elvis' life, Lisa Presley and the idea that Elvis faked his death. As usual, Marty is very open about his views and pulls no punches. (Interview, Source: EIN)

Bruce Campbell on how he prepared for his role as Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep:

Q: You played Elvis in "Bubba Ho-tep". Taking that role was a risky proposition, wasn’t it? Elvis Presley has an army of imitators, a subculture all its own, and the challenge for any actor playing the King would be playing the man, not the icon. I’m curious: how did you prepare for the role?

BC: Mainly, I watched documentaries and learned my lines. I wasn't interested in Elvis' persona, so I didn't watch his movies. I was more interested in what he was like as a guy. Ultimately, I just played him as a grumpy old man stuck in a bad situation. (News, Source: The Trades)

The Most Important Artifact in Broadcast History to Be Auctioned on December 16, 2005: The Original Vintage Shure Brothers Model 55S Microphone From the Louisiana Hayride Used by Elvis Presley and Through Which the Famous Phrase 'Please Young People, Elvis Has Left the Building' Was First Broadcast.

Profiles in History will auction the most important artifact in broadcast history at a LIVE Hollywood Memorabilia Auction on December 16, 2005 in Beverly Hills, California. This original vintage Shure Brothers 55S microphone is the highlight of the auction including over 350 pieces of Hollywood memorabilia ranging from props and costumes to artist's sketches and vintage photographs worth over Two Million Dollars!

Elvis Aaron Presley, known the world over simply as Elvis, truly was the first international "Superstar" and is one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. He sold over 1 billion records, more than any other artist. He was one of the highest paid actors of the time. His musical influences came from pop, country, gospel and R&B. No one has been as celebrated in the history of music. His sound and style transformed the traditional clapping audiences into throngs of screaming and fainting fans, which created a whole new music audience of groupies!

Elvis created a music phenomenon which stands as popular today (30 yrs. after his death) as it was in the beginning of his career, from his first performances at the Louisiana Hayride. This Shure Brothers Model 55S was used at radio station KWKH located in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was purchased by the station sometime in the mid 1950s, and appears in photographs taken at the station as early as 1956. It was owned by the station until June 10, 1975 when it was sold, along with the name and assets of the Louisiana Hayride radio program. In addition to its use in the KWKH studios, it was also used on the world famous Louisiana Hayride radio program from the mid-1950s until the end of its primary run in August of 1960, and saw continuous use on occasional Louisiana Hayride package shows throughout the 1960s.

Artists signed by KWKH or guest-starring on the Hayride who would have used this microphone include Johnny Cash, George Jones, Roy Acuff, June Carter, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Jean Shepard, Roy Clark, Minnie Pearl, Ray Price, Roger Miller, Johnny Paycheck, Hank Williams Jr., Flatt & Scruggs, Mac Wiseman, Nat Stuckey, Leroy Van Dyke, Charley Pride, Freddie Hart, Bob Luman, Grandpa Jones, Marty Robbins, The Wilburn Brothers and countless others.

The most famous role for this Model 55S came on the evening of December 15, 1956 when Hayride announcer Horace Logan first spoke the words "Elvis has left the building" into the microphone as the young Presley exited the Hirsch Youth Building in Shreveport after concluding his final Louisiana Hayride show. Simply trying to encourage the crowd of teenagers to take their seats for the remainder of the Hayride show, Mr. Logan had no idea how famous his words would become in later years! The microphone is offered together with the full rights to the "Elvis has left the building" sound recording, as made by Horace Logan on that December evening. (The full rights, title and interest in the recording will be transferred to the successful bidder from the current owner when the sale is complete.)

The microphone comes with letters of authenticity from Frank Page, an employee of KWKH from 1947 to present, and Joey Kent, son of the Louisiana Hayride owner. A wonderful, historic piece of sound equipment from the Louisiana Hayride show, through which one of the most famous phrases of the 20th century -- "Elvis has left the building!" -- was first spoken.

5 Tom Cruise in "Days of Thunder". (News, Source: Amber Smith)

Marty Lacker slams "Elvis is alive" author: In part 2 of our interview with noted Memphis Mafia member, Marty Lacker, one of the issues discussed is the idea Elvis that faked his death. Marty takes a very strong stance about the idea and one author claiming Marty and Billy Smith admitted Elvis faked his death. From the 2nd part of our interview (to be published tomorrow):

EIN: In his book "Elvis' DNA Proves He Is Alive", Bill Beeny claims (page 62) that in an article in People magazine (September 1996), you and Billy Smith finally "...admitted...that Elvis faked his death by using a donor body".  What is your response to Mr Beeny's claim?

Marty: Bill Beeny is a nutcase and I told him that to his face years ago.  The story Billy and I wrote was FICTION and it was presented to the London newspaper it appeared in as FICTION.  Fools like Beeny like to use that for their own ludicrous agenda.  He's really not worth the effort talking about.

EIN: What is your view on the idea that Elvis did not die on August 16, 1977?

Marty: Elvis died on August 16, 1977.  It was witnessed and documented and an autopsy was performed on his body by reputable doctors in Memphis.  The lead Dr., Dr. Muirhead is beyond reproach and enjoys a great reputation in the medical field.  The people who foster the idiocy that Elvis faked his death are idiots or con men. Now there are 2 Elvis reality TV shows!: 2005 has been the year of the Elvis "remix". Is 2006 going to be the year of the Elvis rality TV show?

Earlier this year we published several reports about an American Idol type Elvis show. Well it turns out two shows are in the making. The first, involving a set of auditions in Garland, Texas, is called Elvis, Then, Now and Forever. It is the brainchild of Harry T. Keane Jr., the creator of American Idol. Among those competing are noted tribute artists, Kraig Parker, James Wages, Matt King and Matt Spalding. The winner will receive a mint-condition 1968 Cadillac, a $25,000 recording contract and other prizes.

The second show is tentatively called Who Wants To Be Elvis? Sonny West, T.G. Sheppard, Sheena Easton and B.J. Thomas have apparently been approached to be judges, and the host is expected to be Ronnie McDowell. (News, Source: Bill E. Burk)

EPE revenues in spotlight: The owner of EPE, CKX, Inc. filed its half-year return with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in August. Some of the interesting filings were:

  • revenues for the first six months of 2005 were US$28.1m, an increase of $9.1m, or 48%, over the similar time period in 2004
  • licensing and royalty revenues were $14.4m, an increase of 136% over the corresponding period in 2004
  • tour and exhibit revenues were $5.5m, representing an 8% increase
  • visitor numbers to Graceland increased by 6,000, from 262,000 to 268,000 for the six-months period

Contained in the return was also that in 2004, EPE revenues had declined by 6%.

On the expenses side of the ledger, operating expenses for the last 3 months of 2004-5 period increased by $23.8m. During that 3 months period, revenue increased by only $22.4m. (News/Sale of EPE, Source: Bill E. Burk)

Celeste Yarnall in Belgium: Celeste Yarnall will be the special guest at the Elvis Matters Birthday Party on January 7th, 2006. Charts update: The "Hitstory" compilation moves up one place on the Official UK Album Charts this week to #38. The other good news is that with this weeks chart entry for "Hitstory", Elvis moves ahead of The Beatles for the first time in the weekly album points total. He now has a weekly total of 1294 weeks and The Beatles 1293. And there should be a few weeks from 'Hitstory' before it leaves the chart. In Australia, the album has dropped out of the ARIA Top 50 Album Chart after a disappointing short run. Fingers crossed it may re-enter the chart in the lead up to the busy Christmas period. "Hitstory" is yet to enter the World Top 40 Album Chart. (News, Source: For Elvis CD Collectors Forum / Elvis News/ ARIA/ United World Chart)

Extract from "The Presley Commission Report": One of the most elusive publications in the annals of Elvis literature is The Presley Commission Report into Elvis' "alleged" death on August 16, 1977. The following extract is from The Presley Commission Report. Even if you don't agree with the Commission's finding that Elvis did not die in August 16, 1977, the timeline and notes make for a greater understanding of events on that day. Some of the notations will undoubtedly generate debate. (Spotlight/Conspiracy, Source: The Presley Commission)

Jerry Schilling book & film deal: A while ago we reported that Memphis Mafia member, Jerry Schilling, was apparently working on a major Elvis project. (News, Source: Elvis World, Bill E. Burk)

Sonny West book update: Meanwhile, Bill Burk's Elvis World also indicates that Sonny's new book needs only two more chapters before its first draft is finished. (News, Source: Elvis World, Bill E. Burk)

Has Madonna tied Elvis?: There is a report circulating that Madonna has tied Elvis for the most top 10 hits in the rock era on the Billboard Hot 100 (Singles chart). The report claims both artists have achieved 36 top 10 hits.

In fact, Elvis has scored 38 top 10 hits on Billboard as listed in The Billboard Book of US Top 40 Hits by Joel Whitburn. Elvis' tally comprises 32 different singles with both sides of six "double sided" hits making the top 10. The most notable of these was Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel where both sides reached #1. Billboard's media release says: Madonna racked up that tally in about 21 and a half years, starting with "Borderline." Presley scored his 36 top 10 hits in 16 and a half years, from 1956 with "Heartbreak Hotel" until 1972 with "Burning Love." We're not sure how Billboard has missed two of Elvis' top 10 hits but hopefully they'll correct their release soon. For the record, the Billboard Hot 100 was introduced on August 4, 1958. Prior to that date Billboard published a Top 100 chart from November 1955. (News, Reuters/EIN)

"Wild At Heart" DVD extras: The 1990 David Lynch cult film, Wild At Heart, infused with Wizard of Oz and Elvis symbolism, is getting the royal treatment in its latest DVD release.

A generous raft of extras to satisfy the most jaded fan, including interviews with cast and crew, trailers, a making of called 'Love, Death, Elvis and Oz', a photo gallery and a 'Wicked Game' vocal, not used in the film.

In "Dell's Lunch Counter", containing nine mini-featurettes, novelist Barry Gifford discusses the adaptation and reveals Lynch had originally neglected to use the line "wild at heart and weird on top" ("the single most important line in the novel!") in his first draft - and was persuaded to put it back in. Diane Ladd recalls how she managed to shock even Lynch during her bathroom scene with Cage. Willem Dafoe reveals how he urinated for real (take after take) when Peru visits Lulu - later to learn the toilet was a prop, to be cleaned afterward by an unfortunate crew member. We also discover that Cage's iconic snakeskin jacket ("a symbol of individuality and my belief in personal freedom") was the actor's own, bought years before in a junk shop, and which he'd always hoped to wear one day in a film. He later gave the jacket to Laura Dern as a present.

Elsewhere, Lynch reveals there was "zero thought" that Wild At Heart would win the Palme d'Or - "It was an unbelievable surprise!" While, in "David Lynch On DVD", he explains how he supervised the transfer himself, aiding the colourisation process and boosting the sound to 5.1 Surround. "I tweaked that bad boy to make a high-def master."
The film stars ex Presley son-in-law, Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern. (News, Source: Channel 4)

Santa Claus is comin' to town: Graceland officially begins the holiday season on Friday, November 25th, with the annual lighting of the lights and decorations on the mansion and plaza property. After a countdown by everyone in attendance, the Christmas switch is flipped and Graceland's holiday lights come alive for another year. This year, Santa will appear decked out with a decidedly Elvis attitude, dramatically arriving at Graceland with Elvis style -- in a limousine -- to participate in the lighting. Santa will be available for pictures with the kids throughout the evening's festivities. Humes Middle School Choir will be on hand with Christmas carols, and hot chocolate and holiday cookies will be available to make this a tradition to remember. (Humes Middle School is the former Humes High School, Elvis Presley's alma mater). Graceland's extensive holiday spectacle includes hundreds of blue lights along the driveway, a life-size Nativity scene, Santa and his sleigh and much more originally displayed by Elvis. For the seventh year, Arkansas philanthropist Jennings Osborne and his family have constructed larger-than-ever displays of over two million lights in Graceland Plaza. The Osbornes provide lights for over 32 cities, Disney World and Graceland. Their light displays are a gift to the communities that enjoy them. The interiors of Graceland mansion will be decked in Elvis' Christmas decor for the holiday season and Graceland will stay open until 8:00 p.m. this night only for those wanting to purchase a ticket to tour the mansion decorated for the holidays. For Elvis fans on your list, there will be special prices and discounts available at many of the gift shops at Graceland and Guardian Angel Pet Rescue will be offering gift wrapping for donations.

For the sixth year, a view of the spectacle can be enjoyed anywhere in the world via the LIVE "GracelandCam(TM)" at www.elvis.com. For more information visit www.elvis.com or call 901-332-3322. WHERE: Graceland Plaza, Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee (Contact Kevin Kern at 901-332-3322 for optimum locations) WHEN: Friday, November 25th, at Dusk (approximately 5:30 PM Central Time) Your coverage of the lighting and festivities is invited. Calling All Fans - two Elvis books to have and to hold: If Elvis Presley the man came in all shapes and sizes, why not the books devoted to him? Cases in point: this season's The King (priced at US$75) and Elvis: The Personal Archives (US$29.95).

The former, by Jim Piazza and published by Black Dog & Leventhal, is tailor-made for the coffee table -- provided the coffee table measures more than 30 by 17 inches, because those are the dimensions of The King when opened. Bedtime reading this picture book is not, but a testament to king-size graphic design it certainly is. Or is a gigantic two-page spread of a scene lifted from the movie Jailhouse Rock -- pictured: actress Judy Tyler, Elvis, and, atop the bar where they're sitting, a shapely pair of high-heeled legs -- your idea of overdoing it?

Not according to the publisher, which is touting The King as the "grandest, glitziest tribute to Elvis ever," and, no argument, the book packs a sizable punch, from its rhinestone-studded cover (available in three colors, "allowing book buyers to select for themselves the cover that best reflects their own personal image of the King") to its 600 or so color and black-and-white photos of Elvis covering every inch of his career.

Piazza's text -- biographical chapter intros, informative photo captions, movie plot lines, time lines, trivia -- perforce takes a back seat to the eye-popping visuals. But there are small moments here too, none smaller perhaps (or more perceptive) than the conclusion reached by actress Dolores (nicknamed by Elvis "Whistling Britches") Hart: "Elvis is a very lonely man" -- an observation Hart made early in Elvis' movie career and, safe to say, before Hart entered a convent.

For more on the subject of loneliness, consider Elvis' gold-plated bedroom phone. Artist Jeff Scott has considered it. He's even had the receiver in his hand. And he's photographed it -- a utilitarian object fit for a king but an object, to Scott's way of seeing and thinking, "representing something far more humble: a quiet man in his isolated domain, away from prying eyes and the desires of others, talking late into the night."

That phone is just one object in the Graceland archives that Scott was allowed unprecedented access to. The photographs -- straightforward shots of Elvis' personal effects (his driver's license, his TV, his Colt 45 automatic, etc.) -- raise the real to the level of the surreal, the everyday to the level of the iconic. They serve as subtext not only to Elvis' private life but to the issue of Elvis' very identity, with this aim in mind: Scott is making a visceral connection between viewer and object that goes beyond looking. He wants you the audience to reach in, grab hold.

It's why Scott, a fine-art photographer and an art-book aficionado, has taken such care with the design of Elvis: The Personal Archives.

Start with the size of the book. Measuring roughly 9 by 12 inches, it's easy to handle, and it's an artifact in its own right to match the objects Scott has brought into focus. It's also an artwork in its own right (with text by art-historian E.A. Carmean Jr.).

"I'm aware how art is represented in coffee-table books," Scott says. "You flip through an art book, and here's an image and here's another image. The question for me has always been: How in book form can one replicate the experience of viewing an artwork in person? A lot of books get larger, but they become -- you become -- removed from the actual thing. I'm happy to say my publisher, Channel Photographics, allowed me to make the book I wanted to make, no compromises."

And he's happy to add that the people at Elvis Presley Enterprises gave their full cooperation over the three years he worked on this project. "They became like a family," Scott says. "They opened up Elvis' life to me." Scott continues: "I've been a fan of Elvis since I was a kid. But how could I translate Elvis' rise from rags to riches?

"I wanted to study what that journey for him was like. Frame it as one aspect of American culture. Examine it from a fine-art perspective. Strip away the manufactured imagery of celebrity. Humanize Elvis. I wanted to put his archives in your hands." (News, Source: The Memphis Flyer)

Marketing Elvis (Part 2): Almost every rock icon - from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin to the Clash - has let his or her songs be shilled on the air. And younger artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, the Shins and Modest Mouse seem to wonder what all the "selling out" fuss is about. "As an artist, you've got to put yourself in some interesting places and do some things you might not have done when rock radio was more dominant and when MTV actually played videos," says Catharine P. Taylor, a staff writer at AdWeek.

The Rolling Stones certainly have found new places to go with music from their new album. In order to make a bigger buck for "A Bigger Bang," the Stones have been written into the story line of the daytime soap opera "Days of Our Lives," and their song "Streets of Love" will be played during the show at tear-jerking moments throughout November.

Tyler Bacon is president of Position Music, a Los Angeles company that serves as a licensing middleman between advertising agencies and music artist. His firm, founded six years ago, manages the licensing of Elvis Presley's songs, among other notables. He said Presley's family is selective about how Elvis' songs are used.

"It's all about retaining his image," Bacon said. "If Elvis is going to be used in any joke situation, the estate will automatically turn it down, no matter how much money is offered."

One example of going too far might be Preparation H's bid in 2004 to use Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" to sell the hemorrhoid cream. Cash's daughter, singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash, refused to allow it, telling Advertising Age magazine the idea was "moronic." (News, Source: Tucson.com)

Marketing Elvis in 2005 (Part 1): We received this thought provoking message from author William P. Haynes:

"One of the reasons Elvis fails to reach many record buyers is point of reference and that has to do with the timeframe that his popularity peaked and the direction A&R took his music in the later part of the sixties and seventies. RCA/BMG and later Elvis Enterprises has always marketed his material as strictly rock and roll and to a very minor extent that was true primarily in the first facet of his career.

However if you look at his catalog with an objective eye, you can see how the marketing has been misguided and Elvis has suffered as an artist because of that. There may be some plausibility to the claim that Elvis Presley was the king of rock n' roll in the fifties but by the late sixties that certainly was no longer the case. Both critics and fans point to the 68 comeback as his resurgence as a rock artist but again I stress to look at the material that followed. His last major recording session commonly called the Memphis recordings produced not one bonafide rock song. The biggest hit was Suspicious Minds which at the time was called adult contemporary.

This brings us full circle to my original point that there is no point of reference for the record buying public. To "sell" Elvis as a product in today's marketplace you have to reinvent the work itself. The "King" tagline needs to be dropped with the rock references. The wealth of material recorded in the later years needs to be seperated into new CDs where the country songs are marketed to the correct audience, ballads with ballads etc. It's time now for Elvis to have a musical identity rather than to lump everything together in new packaging without any thought to the work itself." St. Jude challenges Elvis fan clubs: Two entertainers, one already a star and the other emerging as one of the greatest names in music, joined forces in 1957 to help make the world a better place for children stricken with cancer and other deadly illnesses.

Danny Thomas, star of the hit television show Make Room for Daddy, was holding a second fund-raising event in Memphis, Tennessee, to raise funds to support his dream of building St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Star power was needed to bring in the crowds, and in 1957, no one was hotter than Memphis’ very own Elvis Presley. Presley had burst onto the music scene in 1955, with a rollicking version of That’s All Right, the first jewel in the crown of the man many would ordain the “King” of Rock ‘n’ Roll. By 1957 when he agreed to perform at Danny’s event, Elvis had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show  three times and was filming his third movie, Jailhouse Rock. Thousands of dollars were raised that evening and St. Jude opened its doors in 1962, changing the course of medical history.

This week, thousands of people from around the world will be in Memphis to honor Elvis during Elvis Tribute Week, a week-long celebration of the life of the legendary singer. St. Jude also honors Elvis because of his early support of Danny’s dream. Elvis continued to support the hospital after the 1957 event. In 1964, the same year the Beatles invaded America, Presley donated a yacht, the U.S.S. Potomac, to St. Jude. The Potomac had served as the presidential yacht, or “Floating White House,” for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Elvis gave the boat to St. Jude to do with as they saw fit. In a February 13 ceremony that took place in Long Beach, California, Elvis officially gave the boat to Danny. The boat was sold for $65,000 with the proceeds coming back to the hospital.

Elvis’ legacy in music is unparalleled and his early support of St. Jude was remembered fondly by Danny and the Board of St. Jude. His support, and that of many others, enabled the hospital to tackle acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer. At the time, only four out of 100 children survived ALL. By 1970, St. Jude research and treatment protocols had raised the survival rate to 50 percent, and today more than 80 percent of children stricken with ALL will survive.

Elvis fans can continue his support: Despite this success, there are still thousands of children dying from ALL and other forms of childhood cancer, not to mention infectious diseases and genetic disorders that St. Jude has pledged to investigate and cure. That’s why the fans of Elvis have continued to support the hospital: to continue the fight Danny began and Elvis joined.

St. Jude has challenged Elvis fan clubs to raise $1,222, which will cover the costs of providing two days of intravenous chemotherapy for a St. Jude patient. Or fans can make a memorial or honor gift in honor of another Elvis fan. St. Jude will send a unique Elvis card to whomever the donor designates. Or the donor can send the recipient a special Elvis e-card, featuring artwork of Presley drawn by St. Jude patients.

“Almost everyone can appreciate the music Elvis gave us over the years,” said David L. McKee, chief operating officer of ALSAC, St. Jude’s fund-raising arm. “But his support of St. Jude was also appreciated, especially in those early days when Danny’s dream had yet to take form. We thank Elvis, his family and his millions of fans for helping create St. Jude and for continuing to support children fighting deadly diseases.” (News, Source: Sanja Meegin)

New book release: Elvis Cinema and Popular Culture by Douglas Brode. Though Elvis Presley’s music is widely credited as starting a sea change in American popular culture, his films are often dismissed as base marketing vehicles, commercially successful but insignificant. Beyond the formulaic plotlines and increasing reliance on weak songs, however, the films—and Elvis—serve as profound cultural touchstones, revealing changing American aesthetics more than a changing Elvis. Elvis’s rebel image in 1956, as a guitar-swinging incarnation of Brando or Dean, had by 1969’s Change of Habit become safe and sterile.

This work demonstrates how Elvis, through his films, reflected a shifting social, cultural and political landscape in America. Encompassing all 31 movies and two 1970s documentaries, it provides a film-by-film study of Elvis Presley and America, and argues that each film reflects the society for which it was made. Throughout his career, most of Elvis’s characters combined rebellion with wholesome, traditional ideals, but the public’s perspective changed, and what was considered radical in 1954 was called reactionary by 1970. Studied sequentially, his films reflect those cyclical ideals, and unconsciously portray America’s process of renewal and redefinition of self.

The book will be released in Spring/Summer 2006 by McFarland Publishing. Paperback, ISBN 0-7864-2526-1. (News, Source: Elvis Presley: A Life in Books)

Elvis world record set: Good news from the bailiff of Turnhout; the new world record of Olav Pawlenko has now officially been set. During the record breaking attempt, the bailiff and his co-workers visited Olav Pawlenko 8 times, each time unannounced. These reports, and the complete play-list, will now be added to the official documents.

On a side note: we regret that the president of the impersonators fanclub Elvis Memories (Vertez Sylvain) is posting false information on several message boards and websites, stating that the old record was set at 84 hours. This of course, is untrue. What Vertez probably refers to, is a 84 hour radio broadcast from 1987, with interviews and tribute records. It goes without saying that this is a completely different from the world record "non-stop Elvismusic". It's these kinds of false accusations the Elvisworld can do without. To wipe out the last shred of doubt that Vertez has caused, Elvis Matters will put the official documents on line soon.

Graceland Christmas Lighting Ceremony: Graceland officially begins the holiday season on Friday, November 25th with the annual lighting of the lights and decorations on the mansion and plaza property. After a countdown by everyone in attendance, the Christmas switch is flipped and Graceland’s holiday lights come alive for another year.

This year, Santa will appear decked out with a decidedly Elvis attitude, dramatically arriving at Graceland with Elvis style-- in a limousine-- to participate in the lighting. Santa will be available for pictures with the kids throughout the evening’s festivities. Humes Middle School Choir will be on hand with Christmas carols, and hot chocolate and holiday cookies will be available to make this a tradition to remember. (Humes Middle School is the former Humes High School, Elvis Presley’s alma mater).

Graceland’s extensive holiday spectacle includes hundreds of blue lights along the driveway, a life-size Nativity scene, Santa and his sleigh and much more originally displayed by Elvis.

The interiors of Graceland mansion will be decked in Elvis’ Christmas décor for the holiday season and Graceland will stay open until 8:00 pm this night only for those wanting to purchase a ticket to tour the mansion decorated for the holidays.

For Elvis fans on your list, there will be special prices and discounts available at many of the gift shops at Graceland and Guardian Angel Pet Rescue will be offering gift wrapping for donations. For the sixth year, a view of the spectacle can be enjoyed anywhere in the world via the LIVE GracelandCam at www.elvis.com.

Elvis gets 15 years!: An Elvis Presley impersonator who kept his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint for hours in his Soulard home in 2004 was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.

At one point Gary L. Randolph, 53, held a shotgun in one hand and his toddler son in the other as he crooned his own desperate lyrics to an Elvis song on a karaoke machine, Assistant Circuit Attorney Jillian Carey said. Randolph has performed an Elvis act at wedding receptions and bars. Carey said he was well-known in Soulard and had a reputation as a nice guy. But she added, "People are prosecuted for what they're capable of in their darkest moments."

He had been up since about 5 a.m. waiting for his estranged girlfriend to arrive with their son, Carey said. When she got to his home in the 1200 block of Sidney Street, he asked her if there was any chance for reconciliation, the prosecutor said. She told him only if he got counseling.

"That's all I need to know," he said before pulling out a 12-gauge shotgun and an SKS assault rifle, Carey said.

Randolph threatened to kill himself and their child, but said he would leave the girlfriend alive to suffer, Carey said. He also had his ex-girlfriend read song lyrics and poems he had written about his suicidal thoughts and sadness over the relationship, Carey said.

The woman was able to smuggle a cell phone into the bathroom and call police, who rescued her. A jury convicted Randolph in September of kidnapping, child endangerment, domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action, and recommended 20 years in prison.

In the sentencing phase of the trial, Randolph's ex-wife testified that during their relationship, she was beaten and shot, Carey said. She also testified that Randolph had poured lighter fluid over her and stood by with a lighter. She left the marriage for a domestic violence shelter, then fled to Georgia and changed her name. From the Archives #5: Elvis' high school history teacher, Mildred Scrivener, had this to say about Elvis' appearance and growing popularity with girls: "Elvis began to come out of his shell by his junior year. We had grown accustomed to those sideburns which he sported in defiance of the other boy's trend towards crew cuts. He was growing handsome and, with those nice manners of his, the girls were beginning to regard him as something special." (Source: Elvis...In Days Gone By Vol. 2, Ron D'Ambra, 1980)

Elvisly Yours restaurants update: Sid Shaw provided this update on his proposed chain of Elvisly Yours themed rerstaurants: "For one year we have been negotiating with potential investors to launch 'Elvisly Yours Restaurants' in different countries in the world. Negotiations are still ongoing in several countries, however, in Britain, we wanted to find one investor that would operate the first Restaurant planned for Central London. Instead of finding one investor we have had approaches from many small investors. Rather than delay our Project any further the Consortium who have designed the concept and produced the Business Plan are now drawing up plans to find a group of investors, although each share will probably be at least £50,000.00. Information will be announced in the next Newsletter, on our website and in the media when we are ready to promote the investment scheme. In the meantime, current negotiations will continue around the world". (News, Source: Sid Shaw)

Robbie Williams banned from using Elvis images: Sid Shaw of Britain's Elvisly Yours tells us: "I got a call out of the blue from a film production company that wanted Elvisly Yours memorabilia for a TV video featuring Robbie Williams. Robbie is a huge Elvis fan and I was delighted to be asked to supply a range of our Elvis memorabilia to decorate a film set in Blackpool where the secret film shoot for his next pop video was going to take place. In the video Robbie was to play an Elvis fan that had his home covered in Elvis memorabilia. I had asked if I could meet Robbie and be present at the video shoot and this was agreed.

I had not heard back from the film company to confirm arrangements so I called them. I was told that at the last moment a decision was made NOT to use images of Elvis for fear of problems with EPE if the video was shown in the USA. They had to rewrite the whole script and do a completely new production. In effect, Robbie Williams was banned from using images of Elvis Presley. Instead Robbie dressed up as Elvis. Some stupid lawyer pulled the plug because of some imagined threat that had no foundation. On what grounds could EPE stop a video being shot in Britain featuring an Elvis fan having Elvis memorabilia in his home? My memorabilia has appeared hundreds of times over the years on US television and there has never been a problem. The same thing happened last year with the BBC and "EastEnders". They wanted my memorabilia for the set of a new character who was a big Elvis fan. Again, another stupid lawyer got cold feet and the producer had to stop using memorabilia they had already bought from us.

So I contacted the local paper in Blackpool to tell them about the story and Robbie's filming in the town. As a result, Robbie was besieged by thousands of fans during the shooting of the video and a delighted Robbie said: "It's amazing the amount of people who have come down to say hello. It's made my night. I haven't seen anything like this since my days with 'Take That'. I feel loved." (News, Source: Sid Shaw)

FTD releases for January 2006: The Follow That Dream label will release two CD's in January 2006. A 2-disc upgraded version of "Loving You" and as the regular Follow That Dream release the soundboard recording titled "Southern Nights".

The 2-disc upgraded version of "Loving You" has carefully been restored by Kevan Budd. This is a variation of the BMG release from earlier in the year. The FTD label has been able to obtain a handful of movie versions from a brilliant tape source, and on disc 2 you get the opportunity to hear all takes of Elvis recording the title song "Loving You" on February 14, 1957. You will get 15 takes of the main version in binaural as an extra bonus.

The "Southern Nights" last one is a live compilation from the Spring Tours of 1975 and a companion set to "Dixieland Rocks". "Southern Nights" is a soundboard recordings, meaning a recording at shows with semiprofessional equipment. There are several flaws on the original source tapes. "Southern Nights" shows just how vast Elvis’s repertoire was at that time, with 19 songs not featured on "Dixieland Rocks".

A final note from Ernst and Roger: 2006 will be the last year where we will divide evenly between regular releases of “soundboard” material and RCA material. We will be running out of studio outtakes, except for the Classic Albums releases. Research is always going on, but hope of finding the missing studio tapes is small. We have a lot of historical Las Vegas engagements and tours to cover through soundboards, and obviously an enormous number of classic albums to restore. Thanks for another great year. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.......Ernst and Roger

Former Elvis bodyguard launches self-defence website for women: In a move to make self-defense instruction for women accessible to a wider audience than ever before, former Elvis Presley bodyguard and Kenpo Karate Grand Master Dave Hebler has launched a ground-breaking website, www.protectingwomen.com, that promises to revolutionize Internet instruction and deliver practical, life-saving training to a potentially global female audience in the convenience and comfort of their own homes.

For paid subscriptions of 10 days, 30 days, 3 months and 6 months, women can access 12 self-defense lessons created by Hebler. Designed for all ages and fitness levels, the lessons give women the knowledge and array of techniques they need (potent combinations of kicks, punches, slaps, etc.) to successfully fend off and disable an attacker long enough to get away. Subscribers also tap fresh, rotating content from guest experts that address a variety of related issues. Gift subscriptions to the site are available.

Surpassing the capabilities of a DVD in terms of the flexibility it offers in navigating material, protectingwomen.com is a co-venture of Hebler with partners Jim Taczy and Richard Herrera. It is believed to be the first site to use various existing Web technologies -- Adobe and Macromedia Suites -- in new ways to facilitate learning. Subscribers can study self-defense moves using large-format video they can place picture upon picture, and view from three different angles (such as the turn of a fist or a leg kick from the left, right and at a 45 degree angle). They can choose male or female narration, and get a quick "Flashpaper" print out of each lesson. Plans to offer instruction in different languages are in the works.

Hebler, a 10th degree black belt who battled the legendary Bruce Lee, is a lecturer and self-defense expert who founded The Gift of Power Foundation, a non-profit that gives self-defense instruction and materials to documented victims of violence free of charge. He is author of "MAKING IT OUT ALIVE: Protecting Women and Children From Violence." For more information, visit www.protectingwomen.com. (News, Source: Business Wire)

FTD update from Kevan Budd: Kevan Budd recently posted this message on the FECC board:

"Yes I'm still alive and happily working hard on Elvis projects, having recently finished the 'Loving You' FTD and still working hard on 'the Sun box set'.

I've had several PMs asking if we are using the dry 'Thats All Right' on the FTD box set and I can answer that yes we will include the original dry recording of 'Thats All Right' taken from the best possible source other than a tape. I have heard many sources including the one people are currently discussing and I believe we have the best possible copy.

The FTD box set gives us more freedom to use such a record source copy as compared to the lower distortion tape copy used for the more mainstream release of 'Elvis at Sun'." (News, Source: FECC)

Elvis and Las Vegas: What may be the emblematic Las Vegas moment occurred almost half a century ago. Oddly enough, it happened 1,400 miles from the Strip, but that's part of what makes the moment emblematic: Las Vegas has never been a location so much as a state of mind.

On Dec. 4, 1956, Elvis stopped by Sun Records, in Memphis, where Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were recording. Later, Johnny Cash showed up. Thus was born the Million Dollar Quartet, an impromptu gathering of the gods. Celine gets a top ticket of $225. Imagine what Caesars could have charged for them.

At one point, Elvis described a recent visit to Las Vegas, where he'd heard Billy Ward and the Dominoes. The group's repertoire included ''Don't Be Cruel," performed by lead singer Jackie Wilson. ''He sung the hell out of the song," marveled Elvis, who declared Wilson's version superior to his own. To demonstrate the point, Elvis (in Memphis) imitated Wilson (in Vegas) imitating Elvis (on vinyl).

What makes this such a Vegas moment is the way it illustrates the fundamental condition to which the city aspires: the abolition of category. In his rendition of Jackie Wilson's version of ''Don't Be Cruel," we hear Elvis collapsing together black and white, recorded and live, here and there, past and present. Las Vegas eagerly elides them all, too, just as it does profit and loss, day and night, reality and illusion, nature and artifice. It's the city's special genius: There's no need to split the difference when you refuse to recognize a difference. ''Vive la difference!" say the French. ''Viva Las Vegas!" say Americans.

How could we not? Vegas, which this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding, is the most American place on the planet. Ronald Reagan, who played four weeks at the Frontier in 1954, liked to describe America as a shining city on a hill. Vegas is a shining city in a valley. (Hills offer less acreage for development.) It thrives on a uniquely made-in-the-USA mix of excess, can-do spirit, and intense awareness of man's inherent fallibility. ''There are no places that better capture the spirit of American culture, for better or worse, than Las Vegas," says Marc Cooper, author of ''The Last Honest Place: Paradise and Perdition in the New Las Vegas." From the Archives #3: Record review - "Gee, Elvis is sure having the worst of it these days. First there was that sad stuff about the ghetto, then those suspicious minds and now, his wife's run out on him and his children tell him "Don't Cry Daddy", adding "together we'll find a brand new mommy". "Rubberneckin'" is Elvis in a changed mood, belting, clapping, brassy. There's also an EP called "Lonely Man", another slowie "They Remind Me Too Much of You" with piano backing, a semi-pacer "Doncha Think It's Time" and the oldie and wildie "I Got Stung"." Sheree North dies: American actress and dancer Sheree North passed away on 4 November 2005 at the age of 72 in an LA hospital from complications following cancer surgery. Sheree played the part of Nita Bix in the Elvis movie “The Trouble With Girls!” Sheree enjoyed a long career on stage including a role in the Elvis inspired Bye, Bye Birdie, and also had numerous TV appearances. Sheree became part of television history in 1974 on the 100th episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," when Ed Asner's character Lou Grant fell for her as a saloon singer with a past. In Seinfeld she played Kramer's mother. In the film world, Sheree was initially groomed as a glamor girl who could substitute for the often unreliable Marilyn Monroe, and did in fact replace Monroe in the 1955 film "How to Be Very, Very Popular." She also played Burt Lancaster's love interest in the film Lawman which at the time included a controversial sex scene. Sheree North married four times and had two daughters, Dawn and Erica. Is price of FTD releases too high?: There have been a number of threads on the messageboards discussing the price of FTD releases. Some fans have argued the releases are too expensive. It is interesting to note that one of the USA's top touring acts, Jimmy Buffett, has released a number of "soundboard" recordings of his concerts in similar fold-out digipack format to FTD - these can be bought for around US$10.00 less than the Elvis FTD product.

Interesting Elvis signed item for sale on ebay: Elvis Presley Autographed Initials & Inscription Circa mid 60's ON A 1961 CHILDS RIDDLE BOOK "More Riddles" By Bennett Cerf.

"Inscription reads on the inside page "To Robin a sweet little girl Thanks for your lovely cards They are wonderfull My Sincere Thanks and all the best Your friend E.P."

I emailed this item to someone who knew Elvis well enough to know that this is Elvis' writing and that this probably was for a girl at St. Judes in Memphis, Tennessee or a similiar place for sick children. Which makes sense because the person who's estate this came from was born & raised in Memphis.

The associate of Elvis' that looked at this book believes this was signed around the time Elvis gave the Potomac to Danny Thomas for St. Judes Hospital in early 1964.

Elvis loved children and would donate to charities because he wanted to not for the tax breaks, In fact Elvis & Vernon handed over all the tax info for the IRS to do their taxes for them.

I intentionally take offset photos of autographed items to prevent forgers from getting a autograph that came from a private collection & is new on the market, Elvis had upwards of 20 variations in his signature, although there are distinct characteristics that remained the same.

ITEM HISTORY: This item was originally acquired by the estate of the owner who grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. From the letter I have,  this person knew Elvis briifly from Getwell Street in the letter it talks about alot of different Elvis related things including when Elvis bought the "old church on Highway 51" Which is Graceland. There is mention of this person being able to cross paths with Elvis in the 50's at the pool hall or soda shop. And how they followed Elvis' career  & collected quite a few autographs and other Elvis items during Elvis' life and after he died. Winning bidder will receive a copy of this 2 page history letter and copies of all Estate Documents I received with this lot.

Certificate of Authenticity- Guarantee will be issued to the winning bidder, In addition to any other documents that are affiliated  to this item".  (News, Source: ebay)

Retired Elvis catches Elvis thief!: A retired Elvis Presley impersonator helped police nab a man suspected of stealing more than $300,000 worth of memorabilia from the Elvis-A-Rama museum, authorities said Wednesday.

Duke Adams, a 62-year-old "older-era Elvis," said he was approached while in line at a pharmacy by a man offering to sell him items once owned by Presley, including jewelry, clothing and the king's revolver. Remembering the March 2004 burglary, Adams said he asked the man to stop by his business the next day. Adams went home and called police.

Authorities arrested Eliab Aguilar last week after the Las Vegas man brought all but one of the stolen items to Adams' employment agency, police said.

"He'd laid it all out on the table. It couldn't have been handed to me more clearly," said Detective Kelli Hickle, who's been on the case since thieves backed a stolen tow truck into the museum, used the vehicle's hook to lift an overhead door and heisted the loot in a matter of minutes.

Aguilar was charged with burglary, grand larceny auto, possession of stolen property and possession of a stolen firearm, Hickle said. She did not release information on any other suspects. Among the items recovered were a 41-carat ruby and diamond ring worth $77,000, a $65,000 gold and black onyx medallion that spells "Elvis" in diamonds, and a gold-plated Smith & Wesson .38 special. Elvis the greatest bluesman!: The following is excerpted from what sounds like a great book, Between Night and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archives by Dick Waterman:

Blues Wax (BW): In your opinion what are the roots of American Blues?

Dick Waterman (DW): I'm a firm believer that Blues is economic and not racial. I think that if you were white and poor, disenfranchised, living in a shotgun shack, or maybe in a truck trailer, in a poor Southern town, I think that you have more in common with your black neighbor down the tracks, who also lives in a shotgun shack or trailer, who has no money. You have more in common with them than some wealthy white guy and he, as a black man, has more in common with you than with some African American who went to Harvard Business School and now is working on Wall Street. Blues is economic.

I think that some of the greatest Bluesmen in the world were Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. They were poor white trash. They hung with Negroes, they listened to Negro music and Gospel. They liked it and played it. I spoke to older black men in their seventies and eighties who knew Elvis and said he's a good boy. He loved the music, he loved the Lord, he loved Gospel music, he honored his mother. They've got nothing bad to say about Elvis.

The idea that white people rip off black is ridiculous. Sure there are isolated cases, but I'm telling you that Blues is based on economics. I think Charlie Musselwhite, who was from Mississippi, moved to Memphis as a teenager, hung on the streets with Will Shay, Gus Gannon, Smiley Lewis, Booker White, moved to Chicago's South Side, hung with Little Walter and Big Walter, Howlin' Wolf, I think that he's more of the genuine to-the-bone Bluesman than a lot of black guys who were more privileged. Obviously it's my opinion, but I've been on the scene now for nearly fifty years. Hank William, Elvis Presley, Charlie Musselwhite, their okay, they're Bluesmen to me. Memphis Recording Service Vol. 1: The long awaited project about Elvis’ first two years at the Memphis Recording Service (Sun Records) will be released on November 28, 2005.

The press release: "The Memphis Recording Service, Vol. 1" will contain a book, a 5.1 DVD audio CD and a vinyl 45 single. There will be a detailed book with exclusive new information, unseen documents and colour photos covering the humble beginnings of Elvis Presley's music career and its effects on the birth of Rock’n’Roll during 1953 -1954.

The 5.1 DVD Audio CD will contain 11 fully restored tracks from 1953-1954. All of them has been remastered using never before released original sources of masters, acetates and tapes to produce high quality sound never before heard. A selection of photographs is used to accompany each song.

Highlights Include: For the first time since 1954 we can hear That’s All Right in its true Sun sound without the fake RCA echo. This track has now finally been re-mastered from the original Sun Mother master straight to 5.1 Audio/ Dolby Digital sound. This original version has never before been re-released on record, CD or any digital disc until now.

Tracklist:

1. My Happiness
2. That's When Your Heartaches Begin
3. That's All Right
4. Blue Moon of Kentucky
5. Good Rockin' Tonight
6. I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine
First Louisiana Hayride Show 16th October 1954
7. Lucky Strike (Scotty and Bill tune up)
8. That's All Right
9. Blue Moon of Kentucky
10. Milkcow Blues Boogie
11. You're A Heartbreaker

That’s All Right 45 rpm single

Processed and pressed for the first time since 1954 from the original Sun master “Mother stamper”. The original Sun 209 45 rpm issue of That's All Right was Elvis Presley’s first commercial record. It was recorded on the 5th July 1954 at the Memphis Recording Service and was released later that month. In late 1955 That's All Right was re-released by RCA Records with an added echo effect on the vocal track. Subsequent re-issues of this song from 1955 to the present day have all contained that same echo effect, not faithful to the first Sun recording. If you have never been fortunate to own the original pressing and hear the sound as it was intended, here it is.

Through acquisition of the Sun’s master “Mother” - the part responsible for pressing the first run of records, we can present That’s All Right back in it’s original format with the same matrix number and three pushmarks. This will give all true Elvis fans an exclusive chance to experience the birth of Rock’n’Roll for themselves. (News, Source: Joseph Pirzada)

Elvis author releases autobiography: W.A.Harbinson, author of three books about Elvis, including the 1975 Number 1 bestseller, The Illustrated Elvis, has recently published his autobiography, The Writing Game: Recollections of an Occasional Bestselling Author.

The book is filled with colourful snapshots of editors, fellow authors and showbusiness celebrities, but its major interest to Elvis fans would be its stories relating to the research and production of Harbinson’s books about Elvis. His coverage of Elvis: An Illustrated Biography (1975: US title: The Illustrated Elvis) includes an entertaining account of his travelling to Las Vegas with the British Elvis Presley Fan Club in 1974 to watch Elvis perform on stage. Another story tells how his commission for Elvis (Colour Library Books, 1992) came unexpectedly by phone during an evening when he was desperately wondering how he could make some quick money to get himself and his family through an impoverished Christmas.

A third story tells of his accidental meeting with the drop-dead gorgeous Debra Paget, Elvis’s co-star in Love me Tender, during a research trip to Dallas, Texas, for his book Growing Up With the Memphis Flash (Tutti Frutti Productions, 1994). Not a real ‘Elvis’ book, then, but certainly of interest to the more dedicated Elvis fans as well as those who  may be aspiring writers. The Writing Game: Recollections of an Occasional Bestselling Novelist, is available only on the Internet at www.pabd.com or direct from Amazon.  Website: www.waharbinson.eu.com (News, Source: Allen Harbinson)

Australian Idol "Elvis" special wins timeslot: In what must be a pleasing turnaround for its producers, last night's episode of Australian Idol won its timeslot in Sydney beating 60 Minutes. Idol had 522,000 viewers to 60 Minutes', 450,000. Shows on the Prime network, ABC and SBS took out the minor placings. This series of Australian Idol has failed to attract significant ratings, usually coming in 3rd or 4th in the 7.30pm timeslot.

Ratings for the Elvis The Early Years, shown straight after Idol aren't available but it appears the special did well coming in either #1 or #2 during its 3 hour telecast. (News, Source: 2UE)

"The Elvis Files" for DVD release: Why did the Memphis Police Department close the files on Elvis’ death before medically or scientifically determining the cause of death? Why no coroners inquest? Why are there no photos of the death scene? Why did toxicology and medical reports disappear? Why would Elvis fake his own death?

This fascinating documentary discusses the mysterious details surrounding the death of Elvis Presley in 1977 and poses the intriguing question: is Elvis still alive? Based on the book by Gail Brewer-Giorgio, it features a combination of rare footage, exclusive audio and personal interviews to support Brewer’s theory that Elvis’ death was a staged hoax designed to save his life. Release date: 7 December; format PAL; budget price under A$10.00.

EIN note: This budget release appears to be volume 1 of the two volume specials hosted by Bill Bixby. The Elvis Files effectively takes a pro-Elvis being alive position while its follow-up, The Elvis Conspiracy took effectively the opposite tack. (News, Source: Amber Smith)

Council investigating Elvis Walk of Fame: Parkes Shire Council has given in principle support for the establishment of an Elvis Walk of Fame in Parkes, NSW, Australia.

This follows a request from the Parkes Elvis Festival committee for the establishment of a Hollywood style walk to commemorate Australian rock 'n roll legends. The concept would see each nominated `legend' having his or her name engraved onto a bronze star for positioning along the walk. Parkes has become famous for its Elvis weekend in January and already the town is booked out for the 2006 staging. Organisers have even put out a request for home billeting - such is the demand for accommodation.

Throughout its history, the Elvis weekend has included a ceremony on the Sunday at Bushman's Dam where an Australian rock ‘n roll star is commemorated on a wall of fame. Discussion at the last Parkes Shire Council meeting on the exact location of the proposed Walk of Fame saw several sites mentioned including a section through the avenue of trees at Bushman's Dam leading to the current Elvis memorial wall. Other suggestions included Cooper Park opposite the Moonraker Motor Inn or a section in Clarinda Street to be established in conjunction with the main street beautification plan.

As a result, council decided to leave all options open when investigating possible sites. (News, Source: Parkes Champion-Post/Sanja Meegin)

Australian Idol "Elvis" special wrap: Unlike most reports about its Canadian counterpart, the Australian "Elvis" edition of Idol turned in some good performances. The critics favorite, Emily, was particularly good on Blue Suede Shoes, but surprisingly failed to nail Can't Help Falling In Love. Punk rocker, Lee, gave the audience Jailhouse Rock on speed, and it worked. His first performance, Teddy Bear, was also a crowd pleaser. Kate lacked visual purpose with Burning Love and despite receiving good reviews from the judges for The Impossible Dream, she failed to scale the high notes that bring the song to its peak. Dan gave a good vocal on Hound Dog, minus any real Elvis gyrations, and his Heartbreak Hotel was more than competent without being outstanding. The show also paid nice tribute to The King in places, but unfortunately couldn't resist the "fat Elvis" stereotypical quips. (News, Source: EIN)

Idol judge in mean mood for Elvis special: TONIGHT'S theme on Australian Idol is Elvis Presley and, appropriately, the final four contestant's plea to the judges is "don't be cruel". Unfortunately, it is sure to fall on deaf ears, if Mark Holden's comments to the are anything to go by. Holden is particularly savage on Melbourne punk rocker Lee Harding, who will be singing Jailhouse Rock and Teddy Bear.

"Lee is in danger of becoming Nikki Webster," Holden says.

The caustic judge has already had a run-in Harding, who admitted he did not understand the overtly political content of the Green Day song Holiday when he covered it on the show. Not that Harding holds a grudge – he rates Holden his favourite judge.

Dreadlocked Dan England fared a little better, but still coped a stinging rebuke. The Brisbane lad says he prefers Kyle Sandilands as a judge to Holden because of the former's "brutal honesty" But, Holden's comments could not be blunter.

"He's never less than excellent," Holden says, "but he's got to get rid of that goo-goo smile."

There is a lot to be read into Kate De Araugo's song choice The Impossible Dream. The Bendigo teenager is an outsider in the betting, a fact not lost on Holden. "She has to make her charge tonight," he says. But the tough judge could not find fault with red-hot favourite Emily Williams, who will sing Can't Help Falling In Love and Blue Seude Shoes

"Emily is simply the best singer Idol has ever had," Holden says. (News, Source: Amber Smith)

Barbara Pittman dies: Rockabilly singer Barbara Pittman never had a smash hit, but could always find work performing. The Sun Records and Phillips International recording artist's popularity in Europe remained constant, and she last performed in England in March.

"She made her living singing. I never knew Barbara to do anything else," said Pittman's sister, Carlene Day of Arlington.

Pittman died at her Memphis home Oct. 29 of heart failure. She was 67. Best known for the classic "I Need a Man," Pittman was born in North Memphis. Her mother was friends with Gladys Presley and Pittman and Elvis Presley knew each other as children.

Early in their careers, the young singers one night stayed up late taking publicity photos of each other.

"They were up to 3 in the morning," Day said. "She got in trouble with Mama for that. She said, 'But Mama, it's Elvis.' Mama said, 'I don't care who it is.'"

Pittman began thinking of a singing career when she won a high school talent contest, Day said. As a child, Pittman spent time at her uncle's pawn shop on Beale Street, where she listened to jam sessions with B.B. King. When she was 10 or 11, she auditioned for Sun Records, only to be told by Sam Phillips to come back when she learned how to sing.

Later Phillips would be impressed by a demo she cut, "Playing for Keeps," and recorded her first session at Sun in 1956, according to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame Web site. Other singles followed, including "No Matter Who's to Blame," "Two Young Fools in Love" and "I'm Getting Better all the Time." John Singleton, president of Sun Entertainment in Nashville, said Phillips used mostly male singers but liked Pittman.

"She's considered one of the most important Sun female artists," Singleton said.

Day said her sister had a good sense of humor and "could tap dance. She could do anything." After that trip to England in March, Day said her sister's health declined. A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer. Though a major hit remained elusive in her career, finding a gig wasn't.

"She definitely worked hard at it all her life," Day said.

Rumor mill: According to a posting of the FECC board, a radio station suggests DJ R Kelly wants to do a remake of Elvis' #1 classic hit, In The Ghetto, with superstar rapper 50 Cent and hip hop diva Olivia. According to the radio DJ, R Kelly is an Elvis fan and friends with Lisa Marie and even produced a lost track for her that never got released. He said that the remake would be in the image of a min-film video, similar to what Thriller was. (News, Source: FECC)

Ride nearly over for Libertyland: Libertyland's executive officers have recommended closing the amusement park that once thrilled Elvis Presley and his entourage but in recent years has become a financial drain. The closing could become official today when the board of directors and certificate holders meet to vote.

"We've been losing money for several years," Rick Winchester, board president and an executive officer, said Wednesday. "I think the only way we could really turn it around was to put capital improvement dollars into a new ride or rides. And that's something we can't do because of where we are with our lease."

Libertyland opened on America's Bicentennial in 1976. A week before his death, Elvis rented Libertyland for a night and rode his favorite coaster, the Zippin Pippin, nonstop. (News, Source: AP/ Elvis Unlimited)

Elvis to perform again in Memphis: Elvis is returning to Memphis Thursday, November 10th. Fans at the Memphis Theatre will be treated to an intimate evening with Elvis Wade, as the famous impersonator will be returning to northeast Missouri for the third consecutive year to take the stage for what is expected to be yet another sold-out performance.

Wade performs around the world with his 15-piece orchestra accompanied by seven back-up singers with tickets easily ranging from $50 to $100 per performance. He was initially drawn to Memphis, MO for deer season when he traveled to the area to pursue his favorite pastime. He has returned every season since, noting that he loves the slower pace of Memphis, performing on a more personal level with the fans while also getting a chance to relax for a few days of hunting.

“I really enjoy the intimate setting on stage here in Memphis where I get to do a wider variety of music than at my normal shows,” Wade said. “The people here love to hear the gospel segment, and I love gospel music.”

The Jordanaires, who were Elvis Presley’s back-up singers, performed with Elvis Wade for more than 12 years after Presley’s death. Together they have a gospel CD entitled “God Lives, How Great Thou Art.”

Wade has performed all around the globe with some of the top symphonies in the business like the The Lake Charles Symphony and the Phoenix Symphony.

“Don’t miss your chance to see this international star,” said theatre booster Dr. Harlo Donelson. “Get your tickets early. There will only be one performance. See you there.

Elvis themed Halloween event: It was a dark and rainy Halloween, but planners of Greenville’s Halloween-on-the-Square event continued to “Follow that Dream” for the Elvis-themed event, and sure enough, the storm clouds subsided in time for another Main Street hit.

“I thought for awhile we were going to be 'Crying in the Chapel,' but I was all shook up for nothing,” said Main Street Manager Doyle Dick.

The welcome rain was indeed a treat for area residents who have struggled through one of the most severe droughts in decades, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Rain fell through most of Monday morning and early afternoon, but only a few drizzles persisted past the 4 p.m. start date for the downtown festivities.

Although there were costumes of every color, variety, shape and size, many visited “Heartbreak Hotel,” by donning Elvis costumes to go along with the “Elvis in Greenville” theme. It was in October 1955 that the real Elvis Presley appeared at the Municipal Auditorium downtown.

Weston Williams, 10, of Caddo Mills was among the Elvis-costumed kids who braved the cool damp weather to hang out with fellow Elvi, witches, superheroes and assorted hobgoblins.

“I’ve always liked Elvis, so I couldn’t wait for this,” he said.

A competing Elvis was Lane McKinney, 8, of Princeton, son of Don and Felicia McKinney. He accompanied his cousin Shelly Burn who was a traditional witch, complete with broom and cauldron. Precinct 2 Hunt County Commissioner Ralph Green said it was good to see the popular community event held around the courthouse.

“It has become a great tradition, a safe place for the kids to have some fun, and is good for the whole community,” Green said.

Nearby, one lady danced with a stuffed Frankenstein while The Blandelles played Halloween and Elvis related songs from the 1950s and ‘60s.

“We’re celebrating our 20th anniversary as a group this year,” said lead vocalist Gary Felmet, who noted the band’s own tie to Elvis.

“In 1999, we cut an album at Sun Records, Elvis’ old label, and included ‘That’s All Right, Mama. We performed it on the same day of the month in July that Elvis recorded it in the same studio in 1954.”

The Blandelles performed under the cover of the multi-level parking garage adjacent to the Greenville National Exchange Bank Building. Adults seemed to enjoy the show as much as the kids, with both taking turns on a make-shift dance floor on the parking lot pavement. Several skeletons danced to the tune, “Shake, Rattle and Roll.”

“Other than the last minute worries about the weather, it really turned out great,” said Glenda Yost, owner of Glenda’s Cafe on the square. "It was cool, but not cold, and I was just fascinated to see such a good turn out.”

In addition to hearing Mr. Morris speak, EPE has many announcements to share. The brunch is also a great opportunity to meet other fan club presidents and members from around the world. The chosen charity for the fan club event will be Humes Middle School, formerly Humes High - Elvis's alma mater. Principal Bates and other staff members from the school will be attending the brunch. Joe Esposito sweepstakes update: We obviously ruffled a few feathers with our report last month (see 5 October) of apparent problems with the sweepstakes competition being run on Joe Esposito's new website. This letter was received from a Dr Keith Noble and it highlights the sometimes ridiculous nature of the Elvis world:

"My name is Dr. Keith Noble. I have read your posting regarding the private tour with Joe Esposito. I get my information from New York directly and have confirmed it with four other sources two of which are legal attorneys in the employ of EPE, and they are telling me the same thing, namely that your information is incorrect regarding the personal tour being conducted by Joe Esposito.

Here is the story I have. You can draw your own conclusions at the end of this letter.

My verified sources: You can check on this of course starting with (Scott in their marketing and sales department, they should be able to verify a small portion of this I am sure you already have his phone number) got a call from Joe Esposito three weeks before Joe announced the release of his contest on the TCBJOE Website. EPE at first agreed to support and promote the contest and allowed Joe to conduct the tour. However after the first negative emails started arriving about the tickets costing money etc. EPE was forced to retract their offer to publish and promote the TCBJOE contest on their site and to their members, which is understandable considering all of the bad press EPE could draw being associated with the event. I do not need to tell you that bad press for EPE is most unwelcome, especially during the internal changes the company is undergoing at present.

This is the part you need to let everyone know about, before you read it in the upcoming November edition of Elvis International The Magazine which is officially sanctioned by EPE.  Joe Esposito is allowed to conduct the private tour with the winner of his contest.

You have a choice to make at this point, leave the article on your site as is and lose your credibility as a reliable Elvis News source to many Elvis fans that visit your site and have your errors for all to see.... Or you can verify what I am conveying to you personally and then tell your the fan base that you have conducted another independent investigation to verify your previous findings and have concluded that a few statements regarding the private tour required some corrections.

Joe Esposito is taking the responsibility of  promoting and selling the tickets on his own to the fans since it's his company after all and they realistically have nothing to do with how he runs his business.

I have been a collector of super high end Elvis memorabilia for years and know what bad information can do to your wallet. Your collection is only as good as your contacts and the information they can provide you.

(signed) Dr. Keith Noble

PS: Why do I care if you know this? Quite frankly I do not care about you, but let's just say there are some entities you have on your site that I have an active interest in. I would really not enjoy the substantial financial losses I would realize, if they are no longer receiving the steady traffic you provide if you were to be shut down."

EIN comments: Firstly, we didn't much care for the tone of Dr Noble's message, whoever he is. EIN contacted EPE directly and reported exactly what they told us (= verified source!). Dr Noble...that is not an error! We don't see how our reputation can be harmed by printing what EPE said! If what we printed is incorrect then someone inside EPE is also wrong. We're only too happy to correct any incorrect information we've published. In this case EPE is yet to tell us their original advice was incorrect!

If there is a political issue involved between Joe Esposito and EPE (as is suggested by Dr Noble's letter), then those parties need to need to sort it out. Dr Noble should be taking up his issues with EPE, not EIN!

As for EIN being shut down (appeal to consequences), well sometimes Piers and I might like to think we're that important (but we know we're not). Dr Noble...get real!

In his letter, Dr Noble has engaged in a number of logical fallacies or false arguing. For instance, we fail to see what his collection has to do with the Joe Esposito issue (argument by analogy), and the fact that EPE has nothing to do with how Joe runs his business is irrelevant to the issue at hand. What is relevant is the fact that Joe needs EPE agreement to conduct a private tour of Graceland!

If anyone knows who Dr Noble is (as we've never heard of this super Elvis collector) please let us know.

Jim Curtin collection to go under hammer: Regency-Superior, a leading auctioneer of fine collectibles, is offering one of the largest, privately held collections of Elvis Presley memorabilia ever to hit the market. The auction is being held January 7-8 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

This is the personal collection of Jim 'E' Curtin III, a lifelong Elvis fan -- but, not just any fan. Mr. Curtin has been the foremost Elvis impersonator for many years performing live before thousands nationwide. Additionally, he has authored numerous books on The King, and recorded several music CD's -- all the while amassing personal items related to this 20th Century pop culture icon -- a phenomenal accomplishment for someone who genuinely idolized the legend.

Mr. Curtin's collection is extraordinary for its content and rarity, as well as its massive quantity. There are thousands of original SUN and RCA record albums (both American and foreign labels, some autographed by Elvis) over 100 promotional records, an extensive sheet music collection, thousands of magazines, thousands of postcards and advertising posters, and hundreds of pieces of Elvis memorabilia produced by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

From Elvis' concerts, there are original ticket stubs, programs, backstage passes, worn scarves, guitar picks, belts, buckles -- highlighted by three stage-worn jumpsuits and costumes. These elaborately, designed suits are well documented and coveted by the most avid collectors. One such suit is the nail- mirrored, white jumpsuit Elvis wore in concert at the Houston Astrodome on March 3, 1974 before a record-setting 88,000 fans. This suit was personally presented to Jim Curtin on March 31, 1975 by Elvis backstage in Las Vegas.

Viewing of all Elvis memorabilia is available during the week of the auction from January 3rd through January 8th. Online bidding with full color photographs will be available on the web beginning December 7th at http://www.RegencySuperior.com, and will include estimates and up-to-date opening bids. Additionally, collectors will be able to bid via 'eBay Live' during the sale.

The cost of the catalog is $29, and may be ordered by contacting Regency- Superior at 229 N. Euclid Avenue, St. Louis MO 63108, or by calling toll-free at (800) 782-0066, or by visiting their website at http://www.RegencySuperior.com. The cost of the catalog is refundable towards any purchase made at the sale. (News, Source: Regency-Superior)

Robbie Williams does Elvis: British pop superstar Robbie Willliams intends to upstage rivals at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Portugal on Thursday night (November 3, 2005) by performing as Elvis. The singer will do Presley's iconic leather jumpsuit, steal his quiff style and perform either his latest track "Tripping" or follow-up single "Advertising Space". A source says, "The song's all about Elvis, and Robbie's already recreated him for the video. "He's got all the gear and wants to blow everyone's mind by stepping on stage as Elvis. "Rob's looking to upstage everyone. And what better way to do it that by dressing up as the King." (News, Source: Amber Smith)

Desperate Housewives star wanted to be married by Elvis: Eva Longoria, the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES beauty, 30, and her GENERAL HOSPITAL co-star TYLER CHRISTOPHER eloped to Nevada's Sin City in January 2002, when the Latina beauty was 26, but split last year (04).

Longoria says, "Yeah, I eloped to Las Vegas. Actually I wanted to get married by Elvis, but (Tyler) wouldn't have it. I was definitely too young and not ready for it. It made me realise what a selfless act marriage really is, how you have to be constantly considering the other person, and I just wasn't prepared for that."

Longoria is now in love with Belgian-born basketball star TONY PARKER, who she began dating in January (05). (News, Source: Contact Music)

Elvis sighting - Tanglewood student wins award for Elvis pumpkin: Hannah Eddins, 10, likes Elvis Presley, because he reached for his dreams and succeeded.

“He followed his dreams and I’m going to follow my dreams,” Hannah said. “I want to be a tour guide at Graceland.”

Hannah first became aware of Elvis Presley when she watched Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch.”

“In the movie, Lilo has a pet alien (Stitch) and she tells him he looks like an Elvis fan,” she said.

Lilo dresses up Stitch like Elvis and teaches him Elvis songs. “She is teaching him how to get girls,” Hannah explained. (News, Source: Derby Reporter/Sanja Meegin)

Latest stars to visit Graceland: Country stars Randy Owen, front man for the group Alabama, and Charlie Daniels of The Charlie Daniels Band, visited Graceland on October 25th. Both were in town for an event with Professional Advisory Board of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (one of Elvis's favorite charities, by the way). It was a return trip for Owen, who visited in the 1980's when Alabama appeared in a ceremony at Graceland and presented Elvis's Academy of Country Music "Golden Hat" Award to the Presley Estate. Daniels has a special Elvis connection - he co-wrote the song It Hurts Me, which Elvis recorded in the 1960's.
