Book Review: "A Tribute To The King"

Shot by Dennis Uithol

The world of the Elvis tribute artist is a fascinating one, filled with performers of varying calibre and charisma.

Dennis Uithol's 20 page visual tribute to Dutch tribute artist, Frank Anthony, is an unusual entry in the world of Elvis related photobooks. There are only a handful of releases which focus on the Elvis tribute artist and even fewer which offer a striking visual record of an artist in action, live on stage. Uithol's booklet occupies both realms.

The photographs were taken during Frank Anthony's 'Tribute To The King' tour across Holland in 2003-04.

Some of the cities on the Tribute To The King tour were Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Beverwijk, Breda, Leeuwarden and Veldhoven.

Uithol's camera work is commendable and his photographs show a great use of dark, light and color to give added emphasis to his subject. The visuals are expressive, conveying the energy and charisma that Frank Anthony obviously exudes as a performer.

As the booklet's cover photo indicates, Anthony strikes a very good Elvis image, circa 1969-70. His hair, sideburns, height, weight, body posture, jumpsuits and black leather outfit synergise well, suggesting a dynamic stage presence.

Frank Anthony works with two bands - "The (Midnight) Groovers (for the "unplugged, sit down" Comeback Special performance), and The Las Vegas Train (for the bigger Las Vegas show sound).

Produced on quality, semi-gloss paper the booklet's production is simple and very effective. It comes in a plastic sleeve to protect it.

Verdict: A nicely presented and impressive visual record which will please admirers of quality Elvis tribute artists.
