Not everything in Graceland is going more expensive. Less than a year ago, you'll have to pay $250 for a 30-minute game on Elvis' pooltable. Now, you can do the same for only $100! Preview of "Elvis Is Back" boxset: Here is a preview of the upcoming Elvis Unlimited release "Elvis Is Back" which is due for release May 2007. It will be made like the two “Inside” boxes. The book will be thicker and the DVD will be much longer than in the two previous boxes.
Synopsis: Elvis Is Back will be about Elvis’ return to the music scene in 1960. This year was a bittersweet one for Elvis. He was being discharged from the Army. Music had changed in two years and he was a little insecure about his music career. |
|
Yet he enters the sessions with such ambition and determination. He delivers a new mature diverse voice. “It's Now Or Never” and “Surrender” are truly challenging for Elvis. He proofs himself to be a truly talented singer and not just a flash in the pan. These recording sessions will forever stand out in Elvis’ history.
It’s almost as if Elvis hit the ground running upon his return. The Colonel had been busy preparing for Elvis' return for a very long time. Not only were the recording sessions lined up, an appearance on the ABC televised Frank Sinatra Special and the filming for “G.I. Blues” were immediately following.
His appearance on the Sinatra Special is warmly received by the public. Elvis innocently steals the show from Sinatra. Yet the repertoire between the two performers is very apparent. “G.I. Blues” is a very successful film for Elvis although Elvis hates being in uniform again.
During this year, Elvis is also experiencing many changes in his personal life. Elvis has met Priscilla while in Germany. But he returns to his long time girlfriend Anita Wood. They continue their relationship where it left off before Elvis left for Germany. Vernon marries Dee, which is hard on Elvis because of the loss of his mother. Elvis also brings many of his friends from Germany home and the Memphis Mafia is formed.
But still the most important thing during the year 1960 is the amazing recording sessions. We have two incredible albums from this year, “Elvis Is Back” and “His Hand In Mine.” Elvis truly proves his ability as a performer. He conquers every challenge he is faced with and proves Elvis is back!
Elvis Is Back will present many never before seen pictures from this period. There will even be some very interesting ones from the filming of G.I. Blues. Those were not used in the Inside G.I. Blues book. (News, Source: Elvis News)

Zippin Pippin donated to save Libertyland: The second oldest wooden rollercoaster in the world, the Zippin Pippin, is still good for some news. After they closed Libertyland, home of Elvis favorite attraction, the coaster was sold to another amusement park. While they are waiting for the attraction to be me moved to it’s new home, it’s still at his location in the middle of the abandoned park. In the mean while, the organisation ‘Save Libertyland’ will try to restore the park in to it’s original glory. The current owner of the Zippin Pippin has decided to donate the coaster and hopes that this will going to be a good start for the re-opening of the park. (News, Source: Elvis Matters)

'Idol' outrage - Elvis, Celine duet: So American Idol gives all six contestants a reprieve this week. Big deal. The talent pool is so shallow and scummy this season that it's hard to care who stays or goes. You just want it to be over.
But what really rankled on Idol was that House of Wax "duet" between Elvis Presley and Celine Dion. Somewhere Col. Tom Parker must be smirking. Thirty years after the King's death, they're still finding shabby ways to sell off pieces of his soul.
Yes, it was tacky when they used footage of Fred Astaire for a vacuum-cleaner ad. And annoying when John Wayne became a posthumous beer salesman. But pairing Elvis with Dion is downright sacrilegious.
It's true they both ended up as Vegas headliners, but that's where the similarity ends. Elvis was a stark refutation of everything Dion represents. He was dark, dangerous, and radiantly charged with charisma. She is a plastic figurine with a freakish voice.
Legend has it that whenever Elvis saw singer Robert Goulet (whose parents were French Canadian) perform on television, it would offend him so deeply, he would grab a pistol and shoot out the picture tube.
Celine Dion is just a waifish contemporary replica of Goulet. She's perfect for Idol, but anathema for Elvis.

Audobon Drive home abandoned: On the cover of the newly released book 'Follow Me To Tennessee', we see a picture of the house on Audobon Drive. Visitors of the first house that Elvis ever bought are currently seeing a completely abandoned site. After the divorce of its last owners Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman, there is are legal proceedings going on about ownership of the property. A successful auction on Ebay has been dismissed. The empty house looks now very sad in its residential neighbourhood. (News, Source: Elvis Matters) |

Duet hits #1 on iTunes: The Elvis and Celine duet completely wowed television viewers and has been making the news around the world. Today, the duet is the number one video download on iTunes. The purchase of the download benefits Idol Gives Back. (News, Source: EPE)

No release planned for Elvis-Celine duet: The breathtaking duet of 'If I Can Dream' with Elvis and Celine Dion has caused a stir across the globe, newspapers call it historic, some have even stated that the Idols Give Back show was dull and was only saved by the emotionally charged duet.............And yet EPE look set to allow this jaw-dropping performance to fall into music obscurity just like they did with the duet 'Don't Cry Daddy' performed by Elvis and Lisa Marie.
In an email sent to us by one of our listeners, Todd Morgan of Elvis Presley Enterprises wrote, "This was a
one-time, stand-alone event for last night's Idol Gives Back special and an iTunes video download only." He also states "No release of the video on DVD is in the works." (News, Source: Elvis Express)
EIN Comment: EIN agrees with Elvis Express' sentiments on the If I Can Dream duet. Unlike the Elvis-Lisa duet on Don't Cry Daddy, which was a special thing Lisa wanted to do (and therefore we should respect her wishes for it to be a once off, non released performance), the latest duet is a wonderful opportunity for all parties (Celine Dion's best selling album days are behind her) to reinvigorate their faltering sales position.

Billboard and Elvis' sales in 1977: The following is an excerpt from an article written in 2001 by Ernst Jorgensen and Roger Semon:
The RIAA certifications are based on documented sales figures and in the case of older artists these figures simply do not exist any more. In the case of Elvis the RCA figures are incomplete, most importantly sales during the 12 months after Elvis' death are unaccounted for. BILLBOARD wrote in September 1977 that RCA shipped 20 million records a week. They had as many as 40 pressing plants working overtime to cope with the demand. RCA November releases were postponed, in order to supply Elvis product and at one time during the period more than 1/3 of all sales in the country market was Elvis Presley product. On top of this tens of millions of records sold through outside companies including record clubs, are mainly unaccounted for in RIAA totals. (News, Source: EIN Archives)

Vernon wants Elvis: Vernon Kay (opposite) has been signed up to host a new show that aims to find the world's greatest Elvis Presley impersonator. The 32-year-old presenter will lead the hunt for the 30 best tribute acts, who will then go head-to-head in front of judges and a live studio audience. The show will be screened on BBC One this summer, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the rock 'n' roll star's death.
It is not the first time that Vernon has hosted a search to find singing talent - he fronted two series of BBC show Just The Two of Us alongside wife Tess Daly. His task to find the The King won't be easy - there are an estimated 85,000 Elvis impersonators across the globe, up from just 170 when he died on August 16, 1977. (News, Source: whatsontv.co.uk)

Elvis-Celine duet - how did they do it?: A number of readers took us to task over our story yesterday about the Elvis and Celine Dion duet of If I Can Dream on this week's American Idol. Our story, sourced from Contact Music, incorrectly stated Elvis appeared in hologram form. As was correctly pointed out to us, the TV audience saw a cleverly video splice of Elvis and Ms Dion, while those in the live studio audience actually saw Celine performing with leading ETA Ryan Pelton (miming to Elvis' vocal). It's not the first book about Elvis in Memphis, but the city has changed so much over the years that an updated book had to be written. (News, Source: Elvis Matters) |

Elvis lyrics to go online: Yahoo and Gracenote have reached a deal to provide Yahoo! users with legit,
official lyrics to hundreds of thousands of songs contained in Gracenote's
database, which is in development for more than two years. The new service by
Yahoo! Music will be the first mass-market Web service to offer licensed
lyrics.
Their joint statement says that through the agreement, consumers can search for song lyrics from the Yahoo! Music Search bar, simply by entering even a partial lyric from the song. Consumers will have viewing access to lyrics from nearly 100 music publishers, including the top five: BMG Music Publishing, EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner/Chappell Music, and dozens of prominent independent publishers.
"You mean Bob Dylan isn't actually saying 'The ants, my friend, are in a bowling pin?'" asks Ian Rogers, general manager of Yahoo! Music. "Finally, a free, legal and definitive way to settle a bet with the guy sitting next to you at the bar who is certain the Ramones' most famous anthem declares, 'I wanna piece of bacon.'"
The new service will also allow users to search for lyrics containing a specific verse or phrase. Of course, a classic hierarchical structure will allow people to look up the Artist section within Yahoo! Music, which offers a lyrics page, allowing users to easily browse all song lyrics for that artist.
"Song lyrics are continually among the top 10 searches performed on major search engines, though the results often provide consumers a frustrating experience filled with inconsistent and incomplete lyrics, and annoying pop-ups," said Craig Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Gracenote.
"With Gracenote and Yahoo!, consumers will have access to the largest database of high quality lyrics linked directly to the rich album and artist content available throughout Yahoo! Music."
Apparently, Gracenote is also in talks with Apple, as well as with various other music partners, about its lyrics database. "We wouldn't be in the business to launch just one service, so stay tuned," said Palmer. So probably lyrics from Gracenote will pop up also on Apple's iTunes soon. They already have an ongoing collaboration for Gracenote's music database, formerly known as CDDB.
Yahoo’s lyrical database will reportedly be stocked at first with some 40,000 songs issued by an impressive 9,000 recording artists that will include the timeless class of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley, through to more modern musical pacesetters such as U2, Prince, Beyonce, and Kanye West.
"The major advantage is that they’re going to start getting paid for something that has been available for free," said Inside Digital Media analyst Phil Leigh, to Guardian Unlimited. "It’s just taken the publishers a long time to get their act together."
Before, searching for lyrics would have pointed you to an illegal source of lyrics, on often dubious websites infected with trojans.
Formerly known as CDDB, Gracenote powers leading services including Apple iTunes, Yahoo! Music Jukebox, AOL Winamp; home and automotive products from Alpine, Panasonic, Philips and Sony; and mobile music applications from Samsung, Sony Ericsson, KDDI (Japan), KTF (Korea), Musiwave (Europe), and others. Red & Pat West moving to Mississippi: Actor Red West and wife Pat are planning to sell their Bartlett residence and move to Biloxi, Miss., closer to family and more plentiful acting opportunities. The Wests met when Red was among Elvis Presley's entourage and Pat was the singer's secretary during filming of "Follow that Dream." |
|
In 2005 West -- also known as a songwriter and friend of Elvis Presley -- was in "Forty Shades of Blue" that won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2006 he nailed a juicy role in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced sports flick "Glory Road." And less than two weeks ago he showed up in the pilot of the new FX channel hit "The Riches" in a recurring role. The critically acclaimed series stars Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver as a family of Irish Travelers who take over the identities of a couple killed in a car crash.
Irish Travelers are nomadic clans often viewed as thieves and troublemakers -- and they certainly are in "The Riches." The nuclear family headed by Izzard and Driver's characters have split from the larger clan, taking more than their share of the treasury and shattering the usually tight-knit tribe. West's character is the clan patriarch but has been incapacitated. He can communicate only by ringing a bell and staring with eyes that are sometimes baleful, sometimes angry.
West said filming the show was great fun and he hopes -- as all actors do -- that it will lead to more work. The director of one of the episodes told him that "sooner or later" he'd use West in another project. "I said, make it sooner, son."
Wherever he goes, his wife Pat West is always with him. Back in the early Sixties, he was hanging around with Elvis and she was the singer's secretary. They met, and in three weeks were married. Their honeymoon was spent in Florida where Elvis was filming "Follow that Dream" and director Gordon Douglas gave Red plenty of work -- sometimes as an extra, sometimes doing stunt work, sometimes as a double.
"They made him up all different ways," Pat says, "so we had some money for our honeymoon."
Pat is an agent for members of the Screen Actors Guild. She's as involved in the film business as Red is, but the Mid-South will soon lose both when they settle in Biloxi, Miss. There they'll be much nearer to New Orleans where film and TV shows are constantly in production. They'll also be nearer to their son, actor John Boyd West, and their grandchildren.
They are departing with mixed feelings. Red bemoans Tennessee's lateness in responding to the film incentives that have been offered since 2002 in Louisiana. Substantial tax breaks have lured a steady stream of productions to the state. Tennessee's General Assembly approved an incentive package last year. It still has not been implemented although an announcement is expected soon from the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission, possibly in a few days.
The Wests say, however, that local film boosters have gone all out. Pat pointed out that Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television Commission head Linn Sitler and board chairman Herbie O'Mell have worked tirelessly to bring productions to Memphis. For Red, though, the action keeps pulling him back to the Crescent City. His first movie was "King Creole," starring Elvis and filmed in New Orleans. Since then he's been in dozens of movies and dozens more TV shows.
Another reason that leaving town is so bittersweet is that the Wests are leaving their house in Bartlett with a large pond and stables on the acreage. It certainly has acres of memories. A number of celebrities have been by, many speaking to the acting classes Red held from shortly after he moved here from California in 1991 until last year. They include Benicio del Toro, Billy Bob Thornton, Joe Don Baker, Robert Conrad, T.G. Sheppard, Bo Hopkins and Gene Evans.
When "Forty Shades of Blue" began shooting, director Ira Sachs brought Rip Torn, the film's marquee name, over to Red's house. In part it was so the actors could get to know each other, but mainly it was because Torn is a passionate fisherman.
"He stayed out on the pond all day," Red said. "In his dressing room on the set he put lures together. That was his whole life."
Soon the Wests will pack those 8-by-10 celebrity photos and a houseful of memories. The relocation to Biloxi will cut back on those fuel bills, amped up by frequent Memphis-New Orleans runs. But they'll still take frequent jaunts to Atlanta where Red has a stake in Red's Bar and Restaurant, an eatery where the walls are covered with Red West memorabilia.
But if those walls illustrate his colorful past, he's also an actor still cultivating his career. And for his future, he's got to go where the action is. (News, Source: EP Gold)

Sugarphyx Productions to present an official preliminary round of Elvis Presley Enterprises' Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.
For the first time ever, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE) is holding a world-wide competition to find the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist. The National Capital Round of this important competition, presented by Sugarphyx Productions, will be held at the Lac-Leamy Complex in Gatineau, Quebec on July 6, 2007.
Elvis tribute artists, many of whom have built careers emulating the legendary superstar down to the last jewel on their carefully crafted replica Elvis stage wear, will come to the Ottawa/Gatineau region on Friday July 6th to compete. The winner will qualify to join other preliminary contest winners from around the world in Memphis, Tenn., in August to compete in EPE's last preliminary rounds, and hopefully the finals, presented as part of the 30th anniversary edition of Elvis Week. The winner of EPE’s Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest Finals, to be held August 17 at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis, will be crowned the 2007 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist.
The year 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of the undisputed King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley, and his life and accomplishments are once again squarely in the spotlight. It’s also one of many great ways to re-introduce Elvis Presley – the man and his music – to a brand new generation of fans, and it's the chance of a lifetime for many of these performers.” she said. “The impact of winning this competition will most surely increase their exposure and allow them to advance their careers to new and exciting levels. We’re expecting a sold-out show.”

The album offers nothing new but we think the artwork is pretty cool looking and with a retail price of £4.99 it should attract a few casual buyers to sample 30 of the King's greatest recordings from 1954 - 1957.

Elvis: Close As A Brother TV Special With George Klein: To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, 3DD Entertainment has finalized a deal with Record Plant Pictures - in conjunction with Elvis Presley Enterprises -for the distribution of an exclusive one-hour TV special entitled Elvis: Close As A Brother, presented by George Klein, one of Presley’s lifelong friends.
The one-hour special, shot in high-definition, will provide a personal and heartfelt perspective on the legendary star’s life through the eyes of Klein, whom Presley had originally met in high school in 1948. The film is laced with a soundtrack of the star’s music, an original score inspired by the era, exclusive photos, and newsreel and archive footage.
“This candid and touching special is a real gem as it marks the first time that George Klein has ever talked in great detail about his friendship with Elvis, exclusively to camera,” said Rick Stevens, the chairman of Record Plant Pictures. “He does so with integrity and honesty, as one of the elite few to have shared the highs and lows with the star.”
“The timing of this deal couldn’t be better as we soon approach the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s demise,” added Lara von Ahlefeldt, the director of music and acquisitions at 3DD Entertainment. “This will no doubt be a huge occasion for fans worldwide and we are delighted to have been appointed distributors of such a prestigious and exclusive TV special.”
Elvis: Close As A Brother will complement another key collection of up-close and personal high-profile specials from 3DD entitled My Best Friend…, featuring five legendary icons—Steve McQueen, Muhammad Ali, Che Guevara, Audrey Hepburn and Mick Jagger—as seen through the eyes of their best friends. "Elvis Presley Has Left The Building" DVD: Announced from the Eternal Flame label:
There is no way to describe the effect that Elvis' death had on a television audience 30 years ago.
In every country, on every network, broadcasters rearranged their schedules to carry special news programmes and documentary footage marking the end of an era.
No death of any entertainer has ever been given such a massive amount of air-time, both in the USA and around the world.
|
|
It would be impossible to present to you every news bulletin from every country, but the producers of this commemorative programme have gathered together some of the most important "breaking news" items of the time which will give you a feel for the emotions which were running wild at the very moment when Elvis Presley's death was announced.
This unique time capsule will transport you back to August 1977 when fans around the world mourned the passing of the greatest entertainer of all time, when Elvis Presley left our building. We thank those broadcasters who have generously let our production company have access to their archives. Please note that some of the material used was recorded off-air and included for historical content, as not all TV companies archive their footage, so the quality of each news report will vary. We hope that you appreciate this documentary piece of TV history. Order your copy from It's Elvis Time (News, Source: It's Elvis Time)
Elvis and Celine Dion "duet" update: Yesterday we broke news of a possible duet between on American Idol. Since our report details have come in. Unfortunately, a "virtual reality" Elvis was nowhere to be seen. This from the FECC board:
First off ... she said it was amazing. Celine sang a song WITH Elvis called "If I Can Dream." Much like her duet with Mr. Sinatra but using an Elvis Impersonator from Vegas for the on-stage person.
Sounds complicated ... I agree, but she said they were going to actually use the REAL Elvis's face and voice, which is why she prerecorded the performance.
The Idols do come on stage through the song doing back-up vocals. They were dressed in all white. Celine wore all black, blazer type top with a shear/mesh type top underneath, hair down and long ... loose curls/flips here and there.
She said Celine was in perfect voice and sweet as could be, even after performing it 5 or 6 times.
This will air Wednesday the 25th. Read original story (News, Source: FECC)

One King honors another King: When I was in Daytona in March for Bike Week 2007, we paid a visit to Bruce Rossmeyer's Harley-Davidson (www.brucerossmeyer.com). As we walked through the resort, I noticed a huge crate with the name Elvis Presley on it. My husband being a Elvis fan, I was really curious about the crate and what it was all about. Well, I was really excited to find out what Bruce Rossmeyer was up to with Elvis.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis, Bruce Rossmeyer, CEO of 12 Harley-Davidson locations including the new Graceland Harley-Davidson in the visitors center at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn., unveiled the Elvis Presley Anniversary Bike Signature Series yesterday (April 22) at the Elvis Rock 'n' Roll Ride for Life.
Rossmeyer has re-created the 1957 black Harley-Davidson FLH model that Elvis once owned. With only 30 of the bikes being customized and individually serial numbered from 1-30, each one seems to capture the passion that Elvis had for motorcycles.
|
|
The motorcycles will feature a 2007 Softail chassis and drive train, and each one will include with its purchase a unique piece by Harley-Davidson painter David Uhl and Harley-Davidson sculptor Jeff Decker. Each of these pieces will be numbered from 1-30 and paired with the corresponding motorcycle.
So you want one, huh? Well, bike numbered "1" will be sold for $100,000, with $40,000 of that being donated to the American Diabetes Association. Bikes 2-24 were offered for sale through a lottery system at yesterday's ride in Memphis, and will be sold for $58,815, and to get in the lottery you had to register for the ride. Bikes 25-29 will be available for purchase at a later date. Bike 30 will be auctioned off Aug. 15 during Elvis Week.
All the bikes will be delivered to the steps of Graceland Aug. 15. The purchase price includes a two-night stay at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, a Graceland Pre-delivery Party on the evening of Aug. 24, and one round-trip ticket from within the continental United States to Memphis for the delivery experience.
If you can't afford all this, well, I found Tejas Thump Cycles in Meadow, Texas, (www.tejasthumpcycles.com), which has a replica Harley-Davidson Panhead motorcycle kit that is equipped with all the necessary parts, except gas, oil and battery, so you can create Elvis' bike yourself for $16,500. Elvis in the land of monks: It’s been 48 long years since the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has been in exile in India. But they say that his heart is yearning to see Lhasa — the 1,300-year-old holy city. Lhasa has traditionally been the seat of Tibetan Buddhism and is regarded as the holiest centre in politically distressed Tibet. Tourists find it absolutely fascinating to be in a destination that sits on top of the world. But it is conspicuous to notice that during the last five decades of Chinese rule, the city has undergone a major change: it’s become a regular modern day city.
Height of change: The roads are wide and well planned, weaving in and out of the historical city. Travelling is convenient for tourists; people have the luxury now to travel in swanky SUVs. Tall buildings, skyscraper-like, have sprung out of the ground to touch the city’s sky; the Chinese government have started building flyovers now to manage the growing traffic on the roads.
Made in China: Chinese products too have entered the market and are seen stacked in cheap and attractive packages in the modern newly-built malls. The malls have created a shoppers’ paradise for keen tourists. The young Tibetan women I see have given up their ‘Chuba’ (a traditional dress) and now prefer to sport colourful designer wear clothes. Most of the young and well-dressed girls are seen driving imported vehicles and zooming on motorbikes. And while modernity treads to reach the roof of the world, people now don’t mind spending extra dollars on buying expensive and branded apparels. The modern shopping malls have strong local crowd, who now have a strong purchasing ability.
Recreation and music: It’s easy to spot that snooker is the favourite recreation game for the youth. Almost every locality of Lhasa has at least half-a-dozen snooker clubs, and the new culture seems to grow like a wild fire. The elders spend hours on playing cards, sipping tea and smoking Marlboro or 555 in posh tea cafés. Though English is still an alien language, roadside music stalls have introduced the Tibetans to western music and sell a lot of pirated music CDs and DVDs. While there is a strong Bollywood craze in modern Lhasa, Elvis Presley and Elton John are hot favourites among the guitar-playing Tibetans. (News, Source: Hindustan Times)

He met with his publisher in London, and did promotion work for TCM, including a series of interviews. Jerry will be the tv-host for the special TCM Day on August 16th. Details soon to follow. “Me and a Guy Named Elvis” has sold 40,000 copies so far. Jerry said: “This is beyond my expectation. 'Once Upon A Time in 1977' EID DVD review: Nicely coinciding with the release of FTD’s ‘Unchained Melody’ CD, EID presents a compile of fan videos taken at Elvis’ first tour in February 1977. By editing together seven concerts of home-video material (in varying degrees of poor quality) EID have cleverly created a ‘complete’ Elvis concert featuring 27 songs. With home-video that is pretty unwatchable, fuzzy and filmed from downright far away at times, this can only be made for the serious Elvis collector. And can one learn anything from it? So while feeling in the mood for some more 1977 Elvis, EIN's Piers Beagley investigates. (DVD Review, Source: EIN) |

'Unchained Melody' FTD CD review: While a 1977 concert could never be a highlight of Elvis' on-stage career, there has to be emotional involvement from any true Elvis fan. With this release of a totally unknown concert from Charlotte February 1977, FTD continues to provide thought-provoking material for Elvis collectors. With tracks like ’Reconsider Baby’ and ‘Where No One Stands Alone’ there are also some very fine performances that needed to be officially released. So while this CD will have its detractors who are only interested in the glory days of Elvis' early seventies concerts EIN discovers plenty of reasons that make this CD worth a spin. Lew Allen Elvis photobook to be released in US: In perhaps the greatest photojournalism scoop in the annals of rock music -- certainly the earliest, as it happened in 1956 -- 17 year-old Lew Allen was the lone cameraman covering 21 year-old Elvis Presley's Nov. 23 concert at the Cleveland Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, now the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's home city.
50 years later, previously unpublished and mostly unseen, 27 of these priceless, historic images -- stored and unexamined for decades -- are the centerpiece of pre-eminent art house publisher Genesis Publications' newest signed, limited edition, "Elvis & The Birth Of Rock: The Photographs Of Lew Allen."
|
|
In honor of the magnificent large format volume's U.S. release in late April, the Morrison Hotel Gallery (MHG) in Los Angeles will host a special book signing and reception with Lew Allen on Thurs., May 3 from 6-8PM. Prints of six of Allen's images of Elvis will be on display during the event. Internationally renowned MHG's sole focus is music related imagery -- and one of its co-founders is famed rock photographer Henry Diltz -- making it the ideal venue at which to welcome "Elvis & The Birth Of Rock: The Photographs Of Lew Allen" to the States (it was released in the U.K. earlier this year). MHG is located in the heart of Hollywood on the Sunset Strip at 7517 W. Sunset Blvd. (1/2 block west of Guitar Center), LA, CA, 90046 (add'l MHG galleries are in SoHo/NYC and La Jolla, CA).
The landmark concert that Lew Allen serendipitously captured on film, and which is now featured photographically in "Elvis & The Birth Of Rock," took place two months after Presley's world-rocking debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, and just days after the premiere of his first film, "Love Me Tender." Allen's high school newspaper had dispatched him to document the frenzy surrounding the young star on his meteoric ascent from hillbilly cat-dom to iconic stature, and since the show fell in the midst of a press strike blacking out Cleveland's three newspapers, he was the only photographer covering it. The school paper published only one shot of Presley; Allen, who went on to a photographic career but only reported on music on another couple of occasions, boxed up the negatives and proofs, not thinking they were good enough to warrant further attention.
Genesis credits Allen's nephew, Bob Shatten, with sparking momentum for "Elvis & The Birth Of Rock" after he realized the vast importance of the images found gathering dust in his uncle's basement in 1988. Shatten, Allen (now based in Phoenix, AZ) and editor Mike McCartney provide lively, insightful written commentary to accompany the pictures, which reveal both intimate and onstage moments with the soon to be crowned "King," many simply chronicling the sheer elemental force of his presence. Genesis' website notes, it's "Elvis as he has never been seen before," with the idol's innocence and youth shining through it all -- Allen writes, he was a "gentle, kind, considerate, back-woods country kid. Polite beyond words ... That was my Elvis."
Genesis announced the "Elvis & The Birth Of Rock's" publication in the U.K. in late 2006, and initial Deluxe editions became available in early '07. Set for U.S. release April 26, the book -- which will be available for sale at MHG on May 3 -- also presents rarely-seen photos that Allen shot in 1958 at two shows in Rochester, NY featuring a stellar assemblage of early rock 'n roll legends. These images -- including ones of Buddy Holly (a year before his untimely death), The Everly Brothers, Frankie Avalon and Bobby Darin -- offer an insider's view into a bygone era, when musicians traveled by bus, casually helped each other with lyrics, carried their own gear and stage outfits and were backed by local sidemen on the road. Thieves run off with Elvis pictures: Elvis has left Long Sutton in the UK … Twelve pictures of The King were stolen, along with teddy bears, baby clothes and key rings, from a shop in the Lincolnshire town's market place.
“The offenders also stole seven large storage boxes, which could have been used to transport the items,” said a police spokesman. “It is believed that these items are the type of things that the offenders may try to sell at a car boot sale.”
Anyone with information should call police on 01522 532222. (News, Source: EDP24)
Will Elvis join Lady Liberty?: In New York last week, I drifted onto Pier 17. There, a silver-painted street performer portrayed a herky-jerky mechanical man, emitting machine sounds, for donations. Silver-painted machine men. The poor slobs are probably former Detroit auto workers, subprime mortgage lenders or dead-tree journalists. The way my industry is going, it's pretty clear to me that if I want a pension, I'd better learn the robot.
Anyway, it was amusing to come home and see downtown boosters recruiting such colorful characters to "create atmosphere" in the city center. Well, sure. Break dancers, drummers in dashikis, a trio of Latino guitarists strolling Dean De Carli Waterfront Square on a warm summer night. That would be good. Just please, not that guy who leaps out of bushes and scares the daylights out of you at San Francisco's Pier 39. That act is tragically wrong for Stockton.
However, the booster group, the Downtown Stockton Alliance, is charging fees and issuing performer permits "to distinguish them from panhandlers." Speaking only for myself, I require no help distinguishing a street performer from a panhandler. The poor panhandler has duct-taped shoes and enough peat dirt on him to bring Roberts Island back up to sea level. Dressed as a mime and pretending to picnic? Street performer.
"I would love to see an Elvis," said Kathy Miller, head of the Downtown Stockton Alliance, the outfit pursuing this idea.
Already the alliance has been contacted by a balloon artist, a couple of guitarists and a singer who dresses as the Statue of Liberty, Miller boasted. What does Lady Liberty sing? "I'm not sure. But I have to admit I'm very curious," Miller said. (Odd Spot, Source: Michael Fitzgerald, Recordnet.com)

2nd print run for "Inside Double Trouble"?: The orders of the complete fan package of “Inside Double Trouble” are beyond expectations. However, the first print is limited to 1.000 copies only, and comes with a super book (112 pages in full color, hard cover), 2 post cards, movie prop sleeve, vinyl single, reprint of the original movie poster, the original movie on DVD with subtitles, a signed & numbered COA and a carry-on Double Trouble box. It now seems that the first print of 1.000 pcs, was a bit underestimated. The second print is for the book only, without the extra gadgets. (News, Source: Elvis Matters)

Same concert recording as on the Fort Baxter Box "A Profile, The King on Stage" Tracks 23-32 are bonus songs from various shows.
Another reissue of a Fort Baxter show. The sound quality is about the same, the cover is amateurish! I can't imagine why they used photos from the 50's for a CD which contains a show from 1973. The bonus songs are probably randomly selected and don't fit together. Hopefully we'll get a quality reissue of this show later. (News, Source: Johanesson on FECC board)

'I am as famous as Elvis': John Travolta doesn’t suffer from lack of ego. The “Wild Hogs” star recently boasted that he was as big a star as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe — but didn’t suffer the same fate as them because of his values and religion. “I have fame on the level of a Marilyn Monroe or an Elvis, but part of the reason I didn’t go the way they did was because of my beliefs,” Travolta told the Irish Independent. The star went on to credit his sometimes controversial religion for the difference between his fate and theirs. (News, Source: MSNBC)

Elvis movie guitar sold: It's the dream of every fan: a guitar, used by Elvis. On april 14th, such a collectiors item was auctioned. Off all the guitars that where auctioned in the last months, this is be the must reliable item. Elvis used this guitar in 1962 in both 'Follow That Dream' and 'Kid Galahad'. After the recording of 'Kid Galahad' he donated the guitar to prop master Ralph Agnone. The guitar was treasured in the family and Ralph's son received the guitar when he passed away. When Agone jr died at a young age, his widow donated the guitar to the 'Warner Bros Movie Museum'. This year, she changed her mind and asked for the guitar back to 'provide it to the fans'. The auction hammer knocked off at $68.000 (€ 51.000) (News, Source: Elvis Matters) |

Elvis-A-Rama - What Happened?: In a fascinating, but disturbing, interview, James Warner raises serious questions about the now defunct Elvis-A-Rama contest: Don't Be Cruel: Search For The World's Best Elvis Impersonator.
With impressive prizes (which appear not to have been awarded) and names behind the scenes including Jimmy Velvet, Paul Terry King and Chris Davidson, this was a TV show which never aired, leaving contestants financially out of pocket and not knowing what was happening.
James Warner's experience is a strong warning about how innocent people can be ripped off by promoters, who at the end of the day, are interested only in their own bank account. (Interview/Almost Elvis, Source: EIN) |

Pedro Infante - The Mexican Elvis: April 15, is a popular date. Abraham Lincoln died. The Titanic sank. Taxes are due-unless it's a Sunday. But if you're of Mexican descent, or just love the culture, this date is the anniversary of the death of Pedro Infante: "Mexican Idol."
It's been 50 years since the beloved Mexican superstar was killed in a plane crash (or was he?), and to celebrate his life, a "Puro Pedro Party" will be hosted by the Border Book Festival, in Mesilla, on the fateful date, with music, food, souvenirs and a screening of one of Infante's most prized films, "Los Tres Huastecos."
If this is the first you've heard of the "Mexican Elvis," then you should promptly be "tied to a hot stove with yucca rope and beaten with sharp dry corn husks as you stand in a vat of soggy fideos," according to Border Book Festival Director, Denise Chavez, author of the novel, "Loving Pedro Infante."
|
|
In addition to organizing the Pedro project, Chavez will present readings from her book about a woman in a sordid affair with a married man who finds comfort and cultural identity in her Pedro Infante fanaticism.
Infante's heyday was the 1940s and 50s, the "golden age of Mexican cinema," and while he's loved for his music, it is his movies for which he is perhaps best loved. If you check your local Spanish-language networks, you will probably see there are Pedro films now showing on Telemundo and like channels-evidence of his lasting celebrity.
"It will be a wonderful party," Chavez said, who expressed her hopes that not only will existing Pedro fans turn out, but also those who are less familiar with the star.
"We're looking for old fans and news fans to come out of the woodwork," Chavez said.
Infante memorabilia including photos, Mexican film lobby cards and posters, films and musical CDs, will be for sale at the event. There will also be a raffling of an original lobby card, or movie poster, from Infante's film, "Cartas Marcadas."
The movie star was a pilot and survived two plane crashes before dying in a third in Yucatán, Mexico, in 1957. Infante is compared to Elvis, not only because of his incredible celebrity, but also because of his supposed "life" after death.
"Many still believe that Infante was not in the plane that day and that, like Elvis Presley, went undercover," Chavez said. "There have been many 'sightings' of him over the years."
There will also be an exhibit of Pedro Infante art, newspaper clippings and articles documenting his fame as the "Dean Martin of Mexico," another affectionate American celebrity comparison. (News, Source: NMSU)
Japanese poll ranks Elvis lowly: We always thought Elvis was very popular in Japan, however a recent poll of "History's Most Influential People" rated him only at #70! Not surprisingly there were a high number of Japanese names in the list, but what was really surprising was that identities such as lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury (#52), and Sherlock Holmes writer, Arthur Conan Doyle (#69), were ranked above The King.
Of course, Number One was an obvious choice: Sakamoto Ryoma. You say, "Who?" According to Wikipedia, he “was the leader of the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa bakufu during the Bakumatsu period in Japan. Ryoma used the alias Saitani when he worked against the shogun.” (News, Source: Memphis Flyer Online)
"Elvis Is Back" book release: The next book from Elvis Unlimited will be titled Elvis Is Back. It will be made like the two “Inside” boxes. The book will be thicker and the dvd will be much longer than in the two previous boxes.
Elvis Is Back will be about Elvis’ return to the music scene in 1960.
|
|
Blues book.
Elvis Is Back will be released in mid May, 2007. You can now pre-order your copy from Elvis Unlimited for $70.00 (News, Source: Elvis Unlimited)
New editions of "Elvis, Linda and Me": Jeanne LeMay Dumas is Linda Thompson's best friend. In this memoir, Ms Dumas tells of her friendship with both Elvis and Linda and her days spent at Graceland. The book comes with many very rare color photos, including images taken in Elvis' "red" bedroom.
Jeanne was Miss Rhode Island Universe the same year Linda Thompson was Miss Tennessee Universe. At the contest, held in San Juan, the two were placed together as roommates and they have been inseparable since.
Despite reports on other sites, this book has been available for some time now from its original publisher, AuthorHouse, and also through Amazon. AuthorHouse recently deleted the title as....
Later this month (delayed from March 2007) it will be published in both hardback and softcover format by Rooftop Publishing. (News, Source: ElvisBookResearch) |

Elvis costume found and restored after Hurricane Katrina: An Elvis Presley artifact damaged by Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi, Miss., has been restored and returned to its intended casino home. The item, an Army uniform costume worn by Presley in 1960's G.I. Blues, was carried away from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino by Katrina's powerful winds in 2005 just days before the casino was scheduled to open, USA Today reported Tuesday.
The costume, which has been in the possession of the Hard Rock company since 1988, was thought to be lost for good but just days after the storm the entire costume -- including a green army cap -- floated out of the gulf. The costume was stained with oil, rust and mildew and encrusted with salt. It also had a new and prominent tear, USA Today said.
Imperial Gown Restoration of Fairfax, Va., was charged with restoring the costume without concealing the ordeal the costume survived during the hurricane. Clean it, preserve it, repair the tear so that it doesn't fall apart -- but that tear is now part of its history, Steven Saidman, president of the restoration service, told the newspaper. Jerry Scheff book and CD update: Jerry Scheff is still working on a book and a CD. The announcement of the book is already from a while ago, but he is almost finished with his writing. If all goes well, the book will come out in 2008. The story starts on august 16, 1977 when the band members are informed that Elvis died. Then the book goes back in time at the time that Jerry was 8 years old and made his first steps in his musical career. From then on, the chapters are following his musical life in chronological order to end again on that dramatic day in august 1977.
The second project, a spoken CD, will be released a lot sooner. Jerry is a very intense and interesting story teller and he wants to record some of his memories on CD. He started the recordings a while ago on his own in his home studio, but he thought that it was not interesting enough talking all alone in to the microphone. So, in a few weeks, he will do a new recording while he is telling the stories to his family members. (News, Source: Elvis Matters/Elvis News)

Elvis easter egg for White House: Gallatin artist Vicky Cutrer created a decorated Easter egg for the White House that features three of Tennessee's favorite sons. Using dental tools and an ordinary hen egg, Cutrer created a design featuring the likeness of a famous person from each section of Tennessee. From the east, there is frontiersman Davy Crockett; from Middle Tennessee, there is President Andrew Jackson; and from the west, there is The King — Elvis Presley.
"When you're working with an egg, you're only limited by your imagination," Cutrer said.
First lady Laura Bush last week unveiled the White House's annual display of decorated state Easter eggs at the White House Visitors Center, where the display will be showcased for the next four weeks.
"It was such a thrill," Cutrer said about meeting the first lady. "She was so cordial, down-to-earth and just a very sweet person. When she saw my egg, she told me about how Japanese Prime Minister (Junichiro Koizumi) came to the States last year, and the first thing he wanted to do was go to Graceland. 'It was truly an honor".
The Tennessee Egg and Poultry Association commissioned Cutrer to create an egg for the White House.
"I really admired her skill. The detail and workmanship she puts into creating a piece of art on such a small canvas is amazing," said Ann Cox, executive director for the association.
Cutrer has been working with eggs for 20 years and has won prizes for her beautifully detailed jewel boxes, decorative ornaments, gazebos and purses made from the eggs of different fowl — including emus, ostriches and geese.
"I couldn't believe I was chosen. It was truly an honor," Cutrer said.
She began work on the egg last fall, researching the perfect design. "I went to the library and looked through several books on Tennessee," she said. Cutrer originally planned a design using the Tennessee state flag but decided to focus on the eastern, middle, and western regions of the Volunteer State instead.
"I looked for the perfect pictures, and when I found the right ones, I shrunk them and made a decoupage," she said.
Cutrer, who estimates she has made several hundred decorative eggs over the years, created a prototype of her Tennessee egg to keep for herself.
"I never make the eggs to sell. I do it because I love it. It's a passion, and some day I'll pass them on to my children as heirlooms."
After the Easter season, the eggs will become part of the White House permanent collection and are scheduled to be included in the George W. Bush presidential library. Other eggs in the White House Easter display include a design of an onion representing West Virginia. (News, Source: Brian Quinn/FECC; By JENNIFER EASTON, Gannett Tennessee)

The Complete 1976 8mm Films - THE DEFINITIVE EDITION - 4 DVD set released: 70sElvisIsTheBest posted a very interesting message about this release on the FECC board last month. With a running time of 20 hours the release will interest many fans:
For as long as Elvis import dvds have been circulating, the only good 1976 set to rely on for the best amount of footage was the crown series. Unfortunately, the set lacked a lot of footage that has since been released, and the footage that was there suffered from bad quality. This set can finally lay the crown set to rest and provide the absolute best quality of all films from 1976 ever released. Since these films presented on discs 1 - 3 are in their raw form, you may see footatge from the same show shot from a different part of the audience in their original audio. American Idol star inspired by Elvis: Don't let the gray hair fool you: If you look at Taylor Hicks' roots, they have more than a tinge of Elvis. Not only was the King one of the inspirations for Hicks' singing but also for that fancy footwork that gets his Soul Patrol fans on their feet.
"I'd look at myself in the mirror, and that's where I got those moves," Hicks said by phone last week from Chicago, one of the stops on his 53-city tour. "And I threw in a little bit of Elvis. It was just studying and watching all of those greats, like Elvis, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, and loving their music that influenced me." (News, Source: Newsday.com) |

The Elvis Tribute Artists I have spoken with are excited about how this is going to impact their careers. I had the opportunity of introducing Elvis to one of the very first tribute artists at the Hilton in Vegas, so it’s fun to see it coming full circle.”

Plans for all the contestants during Elvis Week include media opportunities, private receptions and even a question and answer session at Graceland with Gene Doucette who worked on many of Elvis’s classic jumpsuits.
“Although we’re sure winning the ultimate title will be life-changing for the tribute artists who win, we’re making sure all the contestants have the experience of a lifetime while here in Memphis during Elvis Week,” said Jankowski.

Elvis Lives: The 25th Anniversary Concert (DVD Review)
By Vish Khanna:
"Perhaps taking a cue from the macabre notion that enabled the long deceased Nat “King” Cole and Hank Williams to duet with their still kicking kids, Elvis Presley’s original “TCB” band recreate the experience of seeing the King in the flesh in an oddly fascinating way. A large cast of musicians and vocalists re-learn parts and routines, re-vitalising classic Elvis ’70s fare such as “C. C. Rider,” “Suspicious Minds” and “American Trilogy” before a packed arena while a giant video screen depicts Presley performing with the same group of people some 30 years earlier. Only Elvis’s voice is pre-recorded; the band have rehearsed this show so that they are perfectly in sync with Presley’s vocal cues, right down to bowing to his musician introductions. Occasionally eerie, it’s quite a spectacle and the DVD’s directors weave both eras of the “TCB” band together smoothly. Plus: Interviews."

Elvis had a Python obsession: Elvis Presley was obsessed with British comedy institution Monty Python, even learning all the show's catchphrases, his former girlfriend has revealed.
The rock n' roll legend was a big film buff, but his affection to the warped 1970's comedy sketch show - which featured John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Graham Chapman - was previously unknown. His then girlfriend Linda Thompson explains in a recent interview:
"He's be doing all the voices, which is mind-boggling. He'd even do the ladies voices."
Other Python fans included late Beatle George Harrison. (News, Source: Soundgenerator)
Star power perks furniture business...but Elvis themed furniture collection axed: With the theme song from his reality television show blaring in the background, Donald Trump strode into a showroom at the world's biggest furniture trade show and started to brag about, of all things, his couch.
"Trump Home furniture offers consumers a tangible way to experience the luxurious Trump lifestyle for themselves ... even if they can't afford millions for one of my properties," Trump said. "Now the public can not only wear my clothes, they can sit on my couch."
Should Trump's over-the-top bombast not suit your personal style, how about a couch from model Cindy Crawford? Or a couple of chairs from teen stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen? Such boldface names are all over furniture today, and some touted at this spring's International Home Furnishings Market in High Point are among the increasing number whose fame isn't rooted in the business of hearth and home.
The furniture industry has very few consumer recognizable brands -- less than 10 by most measures -- so manufacturers bring celebrities on board to help draw consumers into stores, said Jerry Epperson, a furniture industry analyst with Richmond, Va.-based investment banker Mann, Armistead and Epperson.
"America appears constantly fascinated by the famous, often without regard to their talent or ability," Epperson said. "A celebrity identity gives consumers some comfort and reinforcement that someone else has chosen the item, too."
Such famous-name furniture isn't new -- think Martha Stewart. Other celebrity lines that have sold well include that of American Realist painter Bob Timberlake and a collection named for fashion designer Liz Claiborne, both sold by Lexington Home Brands. But several of the more recent celebrities to enter the market are like Trump, who bring their name to the business as much as a designer's touch or artisan's eye. They include Crawford, whose furniture collection debuted in late 2005, and the Olsen twins, whose second collection will hit stores this spring.
I think it's exciting that the home industry is starting to look like Hollywood," Ireland said. "But customers are the ones who have to determine if these are real brands or not."
Indeed, there have been some notable failures. Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. dropped its Elvis Presley collection just 18 months after its debut in 2002. Company spokesman Doug Bassett said the typical Elvis fan loved the furniture, but couldn't afford it.
"As we like to say, 'Folks, Elvis has left the building,'" Bassett said. "The collection was a successful promotion, but just like Elvis, we wish it would have lasted longer."
The key, Epperson said, is mixing the identity and the appeal of the celebrity with the affordability and attractiveness of the product. "No one will buy ugly or overpriced furniture because someone's name is on it," he said. (News, Source: BusinessWeek.com)

The King rocks two thrones: The words "me, too" and "derivative" came repeatedly to mind last weekend as I devoted my evenings to a pair of local premieres. Both of them were "All Shook Up," one of the latest of the A1-to-Z10 jukebox musicals that have infected Broadway. Rights to this Elvis-by-way-of-Shakespeare medley became available to regional theaters while a national tour was still on the road.
Among them are Airport Playhouse and Cultural Arts Playhouse, of which Airport beat CAP to the "Long Island premiere" by one week. The two playhouses - one in central Suffolk, the other in eastern Nassau - compete for the same audience somewhere around Babylon.
So who's the best Elvis? Neither. The 2005 Broadway original featured instead a Brando-inspired roustabout named Chad who rides his motorcycle into a square little '50s town. He just happens to sing Elvis songs and play a guitar while swiveling his hips, causing women to faint. In need of a mechanic to repair his hog's "jiggly-wiggly," Chad encounters grease monkey Natalie (Kristin Digilio at Airport, Katie Mussler at CAP), whose only use for a dress is as a rag to clean engines. In a running joke, she's dumbstruck by love in the chorus of "One Night With You." Along the way, blue suede shoes proliferate like "Love Me Tender" pixie dust, crossing race and gender lines.
At Airport, Jon Rivera presents a brooding Chad while at Cultural Arts, Rich Martino concentrates on hair product and pelvis thrust, leaving Chad's cheery demeanor all but poutless. Among myriad supporting romances, the most significant is a forbidden one between the son of the decency-enforcing mayor and his "colored" girlfriend, Lorraine. At Airport, Golda Kelli Ryan blows away her partner with her vocal urgency on "It's Now or Never." Meanwhile at CAP, Amma Osei as Lorraine's single mom reminds her that "it's not all right with Mama" with a thrilling authority that will remind you of the late Ruth Brown.
As for the Shakespearean derivation, Natalie tries to divert Chad's attention from the most unlikely figure in this square town - a museum docent in a "jiggly-wiggly" dress. Natalie gets closer to Chad by pretending to be one of the guys. Any number of Shakespeare comedies tell us that this is headed for a rockin' "All's Well That Ends Well" dénouement.
CAP director Melinda Pinto has an edge over Airport's Annmarie Fabricatore in stage configuration: CAP has room for an ensemble to stretch dance numbers into a village of characters rather than a handful of human props. Moreover, Airport's hidden orchestra is muffled backstage, while CAP's sounds more like a band than a karaoke recording.
In either case, the spirit of Elvis never leaves the building. (News, By: Steve Parks, Newsday.com)
Ben Weisman in Hospital: Ben Weisman who wrote 57 songs for Elvis, has been hospitalized in a Los Angeles and according to reports is currently fighting for his life. Ben Weisman is 85 years-old and was one of Elvis' leading songwriters and wrote plenty of Elvis classics including 'Got a Lot of Living to Do', 'Wooden Heart', 'First In Line' and 'Follow That Dream.' Weisman said of Elvis, "Elvis was a very spiritual gentleman. And he had a great love for God. Very spiritual. I saw him in between the movie takes. And he was very kind to me. Very, very warm and we had a great rapport." See our review of the songwriters book 'Writing For The King' which features a delightful interview with Ben Weisman. His family informed us to ask the fans to pray for him and just maybe a miracle will happen. (News. Source; Email) |

New import CD 'Heavy Times': Two 1971 Vegas performances will soon be released on the MxF label. 'Heavy Times!' features performances from Jan 28th 1971, midnight show and Jan 29th 1971 dinner show. For the first time both the performances remastered from the original sources will become available on a sole CD. Although these two concerts were released on two separate imports some years ago - 'Snowbird' and Fort Baxter's 'Lean, Mean And Kickin' Butt' - here both shows are presented in better, improved sound. Using the original source tape we were able to keep Elvis' vocal power central to the mix whilst at the same time giving a new definition to the supporting musicians and singers. Elvis' performance on both nights is superb as he is still performing to the best of his ability. Although he delivers two short shows they are delivered in a very intense, crisp and fresh manner that cannot be denied. Elvis was on stage to have fun and demonstrated this during the older, classic numbers, but songs such as 'Polk Salad Annie', 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'Sweet Caroline' never sounded better. The season will be remembered for the introduction of the new opening composition 'Also Sprach Zarathustra.' As we now know this thunderous opening would be used until the final concert Elvis performed. The season will also be remembered for the beautiful new closing number 'The Impossible Dream' which Elvis sang with power and feeling giving us proof that Elvis continued to grow as a performer.
Packaged with a 16 page professionally edited booklet this picture disc CD will be accompanied by relevant liner notes and with over 27 photographs of the Elvis NOW suit from this season. These are not new shows, but the package and the 79:40 minutes of superb music definitely gives us something different, a different kind of product! The definitive product in reference to Elvis from January 1971, Don't Miss It!!!

New 18 Singles plus Singles Box-Set announced: Following the same plan as the "Elvis 18 UK #1s" campaign from 2005, which resulted in sales of over 750,000 units, Sony/BMG will release a new set of 18 singles, this time featuring classic Elvis singles which were not part of the first campaign. The campaign will run from August to December, followed by a complete box set also released in December. The 18 singles will be released over a period of 17 weeks, on CD, 10 vinyl, and digital download, with a collector’s edition numbered box at the beginning of the campaign, and a complete box (not numbered and slimmed down) in December 2007. |

EIN notes that it would be lovely to see such singles as 'Guitar Man', 'I'm Leavin' or 'Kentucky Rain' released in this way. However the official British BBC Top 40 chart now includes downloads which means unfortunately that it will be very difficult for Elvis to get more Numbers Ones as he did in 2005. In the same way though it is unlikely that The Beatles could ever overtake Elvis for the most Number Ones of all time. (Photo above is only a mock-up) (News, Source; BMG/EIN) |
New Elvis DVD 30th Anniversary Collection: Released last December Paramount Pictures will release "Elvis - 30th Anniversary Collection" an eight DVD Box Set in Europe and Australia in August 2007. This is a strange move since exactly the same box-set of DVDs were released last December in Australia under the title 'Elvis Album - DVD Collection' (see photo right). This new release will contain the same movies - "Blue Hawaii", "Easy Come Easy Go", "Fun In Acapulco", "G.I. Blues", "Girls, Girls, Girls", "King Creole", Loving You", "Paradise Hawaiian Style" and "Roustabout". However Warner Brothers is also planning a DVD-set with possibly 6 DVD’s. Those titles will be announced later this month. This matches up with the Sony/BMG 'Elvis At The Movies' CD release below. (News, Source; EIN) |

New 'Elvis At The Movies' 2CD set announced: Sony/BMG has a new double CD entitled "Elvis At The Movies", scheduled for release on June 4, 2007.
The release of this 2CD set is in conjunction with Warner Brothers’s and Paramount’s marketing push to promote their multiple DVD releases in August.
But haven't BMG just released the genre CD Elvis Movies?

New 'Viva Las Vegas' 2CD set announced including unreleased Concert: Sony/BMG has decided to release a 2CD set entitled “Viva Las Vegas” featuring the best Elvis' live recordings from Las Vegas on the first disc and a never before released concert from August 1969 on disc 2. The 2CD-set features 38 tracks. No cover available as yet.
As Elvis never sang 'Viva Las Vegas' in concert the first track would have to be the studio version. One has to wonder how BMG will sequence it into See See Rider. If the second CD is an unreleased concert could it be the August 22nd Dinner Show or perhaps the August 21st Midnight show?
And haven't BMG just released a similar Elvis 'Best Of' concert with the excellent genre CD 'Elvis LIVE'?

Britney Spears preps her comeback in Elvis' Las Vegas: Fresh out of rehab Britney Spears may be about to resurrect her singing career by returning once again to Sin City Las Vegas. The pop princess has already had post-rehab discussions with a major Las Vegas casino owner over plans to stage her comeback in the city. George Maloof - the billionaire owner of trendy Palms casino - reportedly approached Spears to discuss a deal less than a week after she checked out of the Promises rehab facility in Malibu. Maloof is a big Britney fan and has long been keen on having the star perform in the Palms' new 2500-seater venue 'The Pearl,' according to a local paper. The potential deal would see the star perform at the resort over a long period of time. Celine Dion, Sir Elton John and more recently Prince have signed up to similar Sin City deals. How Britney would cope living full time in a city famed for gambling, drinking and debauchery is unclear. Elvis Presley serves as a classic warning to stars about the dangers of Las Vegas. 'The King' famously spent his final years performing in the city, bored with his 'Casino' audiences, the demands of his manager Colonel Parker and on a downward spiral of prescribed medications. Some stars, however, have managed to become showstoppers without becoming dirty stop-outs. Barry Manilow packs the showroom of the Las Vegas Hilton with his self-dubbed 'fanilows' almost nightly since beginning his run of performances in February 2005. But let's face it, who cares? NO ONE can compare to Elvis' dynamic Vegas performances. EIN says Good luck, Britney! - (News, Source; EIN/Vegas) |

Elvis' Sore Throat Erupts Again In A Row: Elvis Presley's vocal cords are probably the most famous in the history of rock'n'roll. Now the medical instruments that helped keep them on song are at the centre of a court battle involving a multi-million pound array of Elvis memorabilia. Among the disputed items collected by George Nichopoulos, the late star's personal doctor, are the laryngeal scope with which he examined "the king's" chronic sore throat and tonsils, and a device used to irrigate his nostrils before concerts. The collection, amassed by Dr Nick - as the former physician is commonly known - in boxes in his garage, was "the greatest find since the Titanic", said Las Vegas lounge singer Robert Gallagher, one of the men disputing its ownership. Also at the heart of the legal fight are a stuffed toy dog that Presley once threw at Dr Nick, the red strobe car roof light the doctor kept with him in case he needed to hurry to Graceland, the star's Tennessee home, a prescription pill bottle dated August 15, 1977 - the day before Elvis died - and a Smith & Wesson pistol that Presley gave to him. |
|
A wooden desk made by Presley's uncle Vester, from which the singer conducted all his business at Graceland, and a gold watch engraved "from EP and Priscilla", the singer's ex-wife, are also in the collection. The items are being stored in a locked Nevada airport hangar while a judge decides who has the right to control and exhibit them. Mr Gallagher and his girlfriend are lined up against Richard Long, a Californian millionaire and their former partner in the company set up to exhibit the collection. Dr Nick, 80, who had earlier agreed to sell the items to Mr Gallagher in a separate deal, is not involved in the legal dispute. He was a fixture in Presley's entourage for a decade but now works for the FedEx courier company after losing his licence in 1995 for bad professional conduct, including filling out too many prescriptions for Jerry Lee Lewis, the country and rockabilly singer. As Presley's personal physician, he wrote out thousands of prescriptions for the amphetamines, barbiturates, tranquillisers, sleeping pills and laxatives to which Elvis became addicted as his health deteriorated and his body bloated. In 1981, however, he was acquitted of charges that he had prescribed too many drugs for Presley. Because of financial and legal disputes, the collection, entitled Dr Nick's Memories of Elvis, has not been seen since it was shown at four Las Vegas casinos in 2001.
"This is part of American history and musical heritage which shows a side of Elvis Presley so few have seen," Mr Gallagher wrote in a letter to the judge in January.
Mr Gallagher, a flamboyant entertainer who plays a white baby grand piano with his feet and wears a bullet-holed cowboy hat, estimates the collection is worth £127 million. He and Mr Long struck a deal to take Dr Nick's collection on tour, but then fell out. The case started last week in Wilmington, Delaware, where they registered their company.
Thirty years after Elvis' sudden death, aged 42, his name remains one of the biggest earners in US entertainment. An American entrepreneur recently bought the rights to his name, image and likeness, paying £58 million for Elvis Presley Enterprises when Priscilla sold the family-run company. The deal did not include the music of the man who made the most solo hit records in history. (News, Source: Sanja Meegin)

What was Elvis' vocal range and type?: Two of the most common questions EIN receives is what type of singer was Elvis and what was his vocal range. Many different descriptions of Elvis' vocal ability have been published. Possibly the most authoritative is by Henry Pleasants, one of America's leading music observors and critics. In his 1974 book, The Great American Popular Singers, Pleasants says of Elvis:
"Elvis has been described variously as a baritone and a tenor. An extraordinary compass and a very wide range of vocal color have something to do with this divergence of opinion. The voice covers about two octaves and a third, from the baritone's low G to the tenor's high B, with an upward extension in falsetto to at least a D flat. His best octave is in the middle, from about D flat to D flat, granting an extra full step up or down.....The voice has always been weak at the bottom, variable and unpredictable. At the top it is often brilliant....Elvis' is, in a word, an extraordinary voice - or many voices. "
