‘My Summer with Elvis’ New Film: Yet another Elvis film is in development. ‘My Summer with Elvis’- "One summer, a young girl from Mississippi met a boy who, had big dreams. Their brief romance would forever change their lives" is based on a book by Mississippian Mimi Brower that recalls a summer she spent getting to know a young Elvis.
Independent film Ghost Rider Pictures is already working on “My Summer with Elvis” a screenplay has been written, and filmmakers are currently casting.
“The book is just the jumping-off point for the screenplay,” said Rick Guy, who wrote the screenplay, along with Steve Scaffidi of Ghost Rider, which is based in New Orleans. “The story is based on Mimi Brower, who had the fortune of having a cousin who just happened to be the next door neighbour to a 14-year-old kid with a guitar named Elvis.”
Guy hopes the film will be shot in Mississippi and Louisiana, and maybe Memphis, where much of the film takes place.
Because the project is so early in the development phase, it could be a few years before it’s finished.
“We think we’ve got a really good story, and we hope people will see the potential,” he said. “It was fun to write. It’s teenagers in love.”

Dissecting 'Live on Stage in Memphis': An interesting alternate review from The Suburban.com checking out the new Legacy release.
.... On first listen, Elvis Presley’s 1974 album 'Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis' is just another of Presley’s many live albums released during the 1970s, and its importance lay more in the fact that it was a homecoming concert.
After all, two other live albums 'As Recorded At Madison Square Garden' in 1972 and 'Aloha From Hawaii' in 1973 were also released on the basis of them being high-profile events and both sold very well.
In my mind, musically, the 1972 and 1973 live albums had their moments but were no great shakes. Elvis was like a tiger freed from its cage in his 1969 and 1970 live performances, but by 1971 boredom was starting to set in. There were still good concerts — his February 1972 stand in Las Vegas was extremely good. But he was beginning to wear himself down.
However, I always had a soft spot for the Memphis live album. The |
|
performances are better than usual — if not up to the level of the 1969-70 shows — and Elvis is in a much more playful mood. This is significant in that he was in a pretty bad state of mind just months before — his divorce with Priscilla had gone through in October 1973, he had an uninspired studio session in Memphis in July of that year and his prescription drug habit was escalating.
Nineteen seventy-four could have been a turning point. Elvis’s December 1973 Memphis session at the Stax studio was a huge improvement, and a private November 1973 tape of Elvis joking around with his girlfriend Linda Thompson showed signs of a much better state of mind. And based on CDs I’ve heard from the Follow That Dream label that put out much unreleased material, his early 1974 concerts were quite inspired.
The newest version of Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis to be released, commemorating that show’s 40th anniversary pairs the classic Memphis show, with the Richmond, Virginia show performed two days before.
And both concerts are great — the performances are jaunty, and Elvis is having a good time fooling around with the songs and the audience. Having listened to many FTD recordings, I found that when Elvis was in a good mood, he would add humour to his otherwise perfunctory performance of Hound Dog by singing "please don’t forget the past, before I kick your..." And he does this in Memphis.
There is no one standout performance on this album, it’s just all good, and fun — especially the rock n’ roll medley that includes Loggins and Messina’s 'Your Mama Don’t Dance'.

But what is really revealing, and heartbreaking, in the Sony Legacy set are the photos in the accompanying 28-page booklet of Elvis on tour throughout ‘74. Never have I seen someone’s appearance change so much in the course of nine months. In some photos, from the March 20 Memphis concert, Elvis’ face appears bloated and he looks rather slightly stocky. In others, shot just two days earlier in Richmond, he looks as good as he did in 1971. In May of that year, he looks lean but considerably older. But on Aug. 28, in Las Vegas, he looks as good as he did in 1969, as he did in photos shot at a karate demonstration in June. But from late 1974 until his final concert in June 1977, he never looked that great again.
I’m not sure what happened to Elvis in late 1974, but earlier that year, on the musical evidence at least, he had a chance to take stock of his life and thrive. It’s unfortunate the lure of medications got in the way.

'Destination USA' FTD screw-up: FTD has informed dealers that tracks 1 and 2 on 'Destination USA' Disc 1 have been copied by mistake from the 1974 'Sold Out' FTD release. FTD are going to send out replacement discs with the next FTD releases. However it is a logistical nightmare for dealers to try and keep track of who ordered what and when - so Please make sure you contact your dealer and request a replacement.
In the same way that 'Our Memories Of Elvis' had a fault that was not spotted on the first track of Disc 1, someone at FTD is failing at their job of quality checking.
EIN notes that the new ELVIS "classic Album" release also has a sleeve mistake with each track of the second disc printed with the same duration.
"FTD apologises for any inconvenience this has caused."

Tupelo Birthplace Sessions video series launches: The Elvis Presley Birthplace launched a new music video series, "Birthplace Sessions," on Wednesday. The video project, headed up by Meredith Martin and Rob Brandon, features bands and artists on the front porch of the birthplace, talking about Elvis’ influence on their music and then performing a song.
Brandon had the idea for the series when officials at the birthplace talked about how famous musicians like Robert Plant and Tom Petty had taken a minute to sing a song on the front porch when they’d visited.
"I asked if I could see the video of the performances, and they said, ‘What video?’ That broke my heart, with the history involved," Brandon said at the series’ launch. |
|
Starting late last fall, Brandon, Martin and Tupelo filmmaker Ken Calloway began filming bands as they stopped to perform in Tupelo.
The first eight videos premiered at the theater in the birthplace and are now online to view for free at birthplacesessions.com.
Artists featured in the Birthplace Sessions so far include George Porter Jr., a member of the New Orleans funk band The Meters; Mississippi singer-songwriter Cary Hudson; Americana band Lucero; blues guitarist Cary Morin; and Mooreville country singer-songwriters Aaron Vance.
Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Neal McCoy said the sessions will keep Elvis’ spirit alive. "It continues our message to come to Tupelo and get inspired by what inspired Elvis," he said.

Elvis death 'his genetic destiny': Elvis Presley may have died because of genetic conditions that made him prone to obesity and heart disease - rather than his lifestyle, according to a new UK Channel 4 programme 'Dead Famous DNA'.
DNA analysis on a hair sample thought to have come from the king of rock'n'roll, which was bought from a friend of the singer's barber, has revealed that the singer could have suffered from a heart muscle disease.
The DNA results, analysed by Dr Stephen Kingsmore, showed mutations, known as "variants", which cause migraines, glaucoma and obesity.
Presley, a Southern-Style food addict who relied heavily on prescription drugs, was known to have suffered from headaches and bad eyesight and ballooned in weight towards the end of his life.
Scientists also found a "crucial" variant known to cause hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a heart muscle disease that causes the thickening of the heart and weakening of the heart muscle.
Presley displayed many of the symptoms of this disease, including an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, fainting and high blood pressure.
Elvis' mother Gladys also died young at the age of 46 of a heart attack brought on by acute hepatitis.
Producers said although it was officially known that Presley died of heart failure, the cause of his heart failure was still subject to speculation and had
|
|
fuelled a "melting pot" of conspiracy theories.
Kingsmore, director of the Centre for Paediatric Genomic Medicine in Kansas City, described the results as "a smoking gun".
"There had been so much speculation about cause of death, and so much ill spoken of his lifestyle, and we had this intriguing finding that possibly Elvis had a medical illness. For years, Elvis has been blamed for his own death, for overeating or overdosing on drugs," he said.
"Both of these addictions wouldn't have helped. But it seemed Elvis had a flaw in his DNA."
Mr Evans said that they were "very, very confident" that the sample of hair had come from the singer, after spending three years doing their research.
"I'm massively confident that is Elvis' DNA but I can't prove it," he said. "I can't tell you 100% that is Elvis' DNA. That's not possible."
Producers wrote to Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley, but said that they have not heard back.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. drives historic Elvis Car: Earnhardt has visited Graceland and its extensive car collection, which has featured Presley's black 1973 Stutz Blackhawk III. The car was the King's daily ride and one he drove just an hour and a half before his death in the early hours of Aug. 16, 1977.
The car will be displayed April 3-6 at the AutoFair and Earnhardt Jr. took Elvis' '73 Stutz Blackhawk for a recent trial spin at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The car is preserved – not restored – and Earnhardt is one of the few people to ever drive the vehicle aside from Presley.
Elvis purchased the '73 Blackhawk III on Sept. 6, 1974, through a General Motors lease agreement after putting
|
|
down a $20,000 deposit. It had Pontiac's 230-horsepower V-8, a red leather interior, and an 18-karat gold trim package. The singer made it known that only he would be driving this one, perhaps a caution he developed after the first '71 was severely damaged in an accident. According to Elvis lore, the King often invited members of his entourage to ride with him in other cars, but in the Blackhawk III he was just as likely to be by himself. Over the next three years, Elvis put 8,450 miles on the '73.
"They haven't really touched the interior of the car since he drove it," he said. "Knowing how big of an entertainer he was and how much he meant to so many people, it really meant a lot to me to be able to drive that car today."
Earnhardt is a major Elvis fan who has an "Elvis Room" in his home -- filled with memorabilia -- and a collection of roughly 200 Elvis records. The driver's favorite Elvis song is Promised Land, he said.

Elvis Hair Auctioned -Sold at £150: Just one minute single STRAND of Elvis' hair went under the hammer this last weekend in the UK. Suggestions were that buyers might fork out up to £5,000 for the single hair. (look carefully or you will miss it!) The hair, which is displayed in the middle of a record and framed picture of The King, was up for grabs at an auction house in Northumberland, UK.
The Northern Auction Centre in Wooler, which acquired the item as part of a deceased person's estate, described it as "a rare find".
It was accompanied by letter of authentication from a Thomas Morgan, who said he knew Elvis and was a friend of his hairdresser Homer Gilleland.
The expected price was between £50 and £5,000. It was bought by a local collector for £150.
Jim Railton from the auction house said: "We've never sold Elvis' hair before".

(look carefully or you will miss it!) The hair, which is displayed in the middle of a record and framed picture of The King, was up for grabs at an auction house in Northumberland, UK.
It comes with a letter from Thomas Morgan, who knew Elvis and claims to have been a friend of the singer's hairdresser, Homer Gilleland.
Mr Morgan says that Mr Gilleland accompanied the star on many tours and that the bag of hair clippings he built up was one of his prized possessions.
Jim Railton, from the Northern Auction Centre, said he is confident of the item's authenticity. "We have never sold Elvis' hair before. It came from a deceased estate and we didn't know much about it," he said.
"I processed it quite quickly and did not actually look at the back until someone said there's some stuff behind the picture.
"When we had a look we found some provenance with a certificate saying it

was Elvis' hair.
"It's not something you come across every day and it's here to be sold for whatever it makes on the day, there's no reserve.
"It could make £50, it could make £5,000 but it is a rare thing and we are quite confident it is what it says it is."
The auction was last Saturday, still no confirmation of what Elvis' hair sold for.

"Jimmy 'Orion' Ellis" Movie - and Survey!: In another odd-spot Elvis connection, British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay is working on an upcoming documentary feature film which will explore the life of Jimmy 'Orion' Ellis. Orion was based on a fictional character in a book by Gail Brewer-Georgio and launched to the music-loving public by Shelby Singleton of Sun Records in the late 1970s. Orion's vocal similarity to Elvis' brought him many fans, a career in the music industry and the fame he'd been aspiring to, but at a cost – there was much speculation on who was the man behind the mask. The scheme exploded into cult success – and the "Elvis is alive" myth was born. By mixing archive footage of Jimmy throughout his career (including interviews and performances), and talking to surviving family members, friends and loyal fans, it is our hope to unveil the true identity of ‘the masked man’ as well as explore his legacy and why he is still loved by so many.
Jimmy Ellis' life came to a tragic end during an armed robbery at a pawn shop he was running after finally leaving the music industry.
Go here to the OrionTheMovie website where you can find out more on the film.
They also have a quick online questionnaire to gather stories and thoughts from Elvis fans across the world about Orion. Did you ever see him in concert, what do you think of the Orion-Elvis myth?

Elvis' American Eagle Cape Fails to Sell: The full-length, bejeweled cape made for Elvis' 1973 Aloha From Hawaii concert - but so heavy that Elvis did NOT wear it - failed to sell at this week's auction that ended yesterday.
While bidding on the cape topped $90,000, it fell short of the reserve price set by the seller, according to the Boston-based auction house RR Auctions. The seller and the highest bidder are now trying to negotiate a price.
A “reserve price” is the minimum amount the owner of an item up for auction will accept as the winning bid. Reserve prices allow auctioneers to generate interest among bidders by setting lower opening prices than sellers will accept. They are disliked by bidders for obscuring true minimum prices and ruining the chances of winning an auction at a bargain price.
The opening price for the cape was $10,000. The reserve price was not disclosed.
The cape is heavily inlaid with semi-precious stones arranged in the form of an American eagle. It weighs 12 pounds and proved to be too heavy for Presley to wear. The cape’s weight threatened to pull him over backwards in rehearsal. So the cape’s designer, the renowned costume maker Bill Belew, quickly made the shorter, lighter version of the cape that Presley actually wore during the concert.
Note that at Julien's auctions in 2013 it was offered for $130,000 - $140,000!

UK 'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' Still Charting: Once again Elvis' GOLD UK album release
'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' is climbing the charts.
The album rises from #113 to #49 on last weeks UK Album Chart.
The reason for the jump in chart placing may be because HMV are selling it for a discount with any purchase over £9/$20.
At many stores HMV have the single album prominently displayed on the counter and/or on a display with other artists titles on offer.
This is an amazing story for Elvis' continuing chart success when at the time of release the compilation was compared to both The Beatles and Cliff Richard's new albums both of which sunk without trace.

Elvis and the supposed Blood-Sucking Vampires!: Marty Lacker, rightly, takes offence at Lisa Marie's comments to the Australian media... He add his thoughts...
.... I read the interview with Lisa Marie by the Australian newspaper you ran (see story below) and in addition to shaking my head in sadness about some of her comments I was a bit amused.
So we were blood sucking vampires and stupid people, those of us who were with Elvis? Isn't that interesting coming from this rocket scientist who claims to be a singer but in reality has not gotten anymore intelligent as she has aged nor does she really know anything about us because she was a spoiled brat child when she her father was alive and around us.
We are aware that she has been negatively influenced in that area by her mother and a couple of others but still, she's 46 years old and she needs to shut up about things she really doesn't know anything about and enjoy the life her father provided for her. If her last name wasn't |
|
Presley nobody would pay her any attention as a so-called singer, she ought to continue her so-called career using the name Lockwood or Keogh and see how far she gets.
And now I will retract my vampire teeth and end this however let me also add that a few of the other guys who, like me, loved her father are aware of her comments in that interview and they feel the same way I do.
..... Marty Lacker.

Elvis' Hillcrest Home Sold Again: Peter Morton, Hard Rock Cafe founder, has on-sold Elvis' LA mansion making a neat $4.7Million profit in under 18 months.
Just over a year after he bought Elvis Presley's old Beverly Hills mansion for $9.8 million, Hard Rock Cafe founder Peter Morton has flipped the property for a tidy property, according to real estate blogger The Real Estalker.
The home reportedly sold off-the-market to a corporate entity for $14.5 million. Morton was rumored to be tearing down the historic home, but it seems that luckily those plans never panned out.
The home, which has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and spans 5,367 square feet, sold to Morton in December 2012 for significantly less than the initial $13million asking price.

Lisa Marie plays sold-out Sydney crowd: It certainly is a long lonely highway from Graceland to Hornsby RSL, north Sydney, but singer Lisa Marie Presley didn’t let down her adoring fans, giving a rousing performance last night. She even agreed to meet her supporters after her gig, on the strict condition that none dressed up as her famous dad Elvis or ex-husband Michael Jackson. The Southern girl performed in Australia for the first time in eight years, showcasing her new blues and roots album, Storm and Grace, to a 600-strong audience.
But the RSL’s website warned: “Patrons dressed as Elvis or Michael Jackson will NOT be allowed to attend the meet and greet under any circumstances.”
The club noted, “We’d hope people would respect her for her music talents, that’s what she’s here for, her album.”
EIN agrees with that!
And respect her they did, with cries of “I love you” ringing out as the petite singer in a long, black gown and bare feet took to the stage.
“I made a mistake,” Presley said in laid-back Southern fashion. “I came out here with no shoes, I thought there was carpet. So if I slip, I slip.”
With a microphone in one hand and tambourine in the other she performed a majority of songs from 'Storm and Grace'. Lights Out, S.O.B. and I’ll Figure It Out from her first two albums, 2005’s Now What and 2003’s To Whom It May Concern, were also thrown in.
“The live show is a lot more energetic than the record, it’s a little more loud
|
|
and lively,” Presley said. “I start off mildly, really break it down for the acoustic, and then we just get louder and louder and louder and take it home.”
Before the performance she enjoyed a day out at Sydney Taronga Zoo with twin daughters Harper and Finley, 5, and 24-year-old daughter Riley Keough.

'Live On Stage In Memphis' - New Review: All Music.com reviews the new Legacy release and provides some interesting viewpoints.
.... How much did Colonel Tom Parker flood the Elvis marketplace in the early '70s? Between 1969's From Vegas to Memphis to 1974's Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis, Presley was releasing a live album nearly every year (1971 was skipped). Each one was tied to an event -- a televised concert from Hawaii, his first concert in New York -- but, decades removed from this era, it's easy to forget that at the dawn of the '70s, seeing Elvis on-stage was in itself event, as he spent the better part of the '60s making movies instead of playing live. In fact, the last time he had played in Memphis, Tennessee was in 1961, so even though it was the last in a long line of live records, the homecoming concert captured on 1974's cumbersomely titled 'Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis' was something special: it captured a beloved hero returning home.
Presley made sure he was prepared for the occasion, running through much of the set two days prior the March 18 Memphis concert at the Richmond Coliseum.
|
|
The 2014 Legacy Edition of Recorded Live on Stage contains that concert as its second disc (this second disc also has five very relaxed, very spare, quite appealing rehearsals from August 1974, cut just prior to an appearance in Vegas) and it's quite a bit different in tenor than the released record; it's loose and rollicking, with Elvis and the TCB band feeding off the energy of an exuberant audience. In contrast, the Memphis concert -- here on the first disc, in the expanded, full-concert addition originally released on Follow That Dream Records in 2004 -- is precise, professional, and deadly, a testament to the Presley team being a well-oiled machine.
As this full-length Legacy Expansion reveals, far from being just another Elvis live record, Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis is a little bit of dynamite, proof that on a good night in 1974, Elvis was still as good as rock & roll got.

The ELVIS Concert 2014 - An Evening With Elvis’ Original Musicians: Coming Soon - one of the best ELVIS concerts in Europe, the Special anniversary show featuring the people who knew and worked with The King.
This year it’s 60 years ago that Elvis’ rise to fame began with his first single “That’s All Right”, which was released on SUN Records in the summer of 1954. To celebrate this fact, we are presenting this very special Elvis show, which is widely viewed as one of the best Elvis shows worldwide. This show is unique because it features Elvis’ friends and original musicians.
Featuring former bandmembers – bassplayer Duke Bardwell, drummer Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe – and other top musicians paying tribute to The King. The MC for the proceedings is Elvis’ former head of security, Dick Grob. Grob will be telling stories from his years with the King, and there will also be plenty of opportunity to talk to him and ask him questions.
The musical part of the show will include Elvis' band mates plus the leadsinger,
the phenomenal Dwight Icenhower, who is regarded by many as one of the best
Elvis tribute artists worldwide. Icenhower has won many awards, including “The
World’s Best Elvis” in Memphis. They will be backed by a full band.
These are the people that stood next to The King when he rocked the world, and this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get upclose to an important part of music history.

Lisa Marie - What I Know About Men!: Yesterday Australia's Sydney Morning Herald published an interview with Lisa Marie Presley "What I Know About Men". In the article she notes.......
... "I was just nine when my father died, but I had a very special relationship with him. He was the most incredible, enigmatic, powerful, dynamic human being I've ever met. As far as men go, he left big shoes to fill. He is still such a presence in popular culture, but I don't find it odd or surreal – it makes me happy, actually.
- Most of my memories are of being home with him. Our rooms were on the top floor of Graceland. We would sit in my room and watch TV, and spend a lot of time together upstairs alone. He'd take me on golf-cart rides, or we'd visit my grandfather or the pet store.
- My father was very funny, very playful, but he also had a very bad temper. Across the board, he was extreme: either really funny, really playful, or in such a bad mood that people were running for the hills. But he had so many vampires around him, stupid people, and they'd tick him off. He was frustrated sometimes. Like everybody, he was human.
- I didn't find it hard to have a normal life. Things weren't quite like |
|
they are now in the US, where you're in a fishbowl because of celebrity news sites like TMZ. Back then I felt I had a bit of space, and I could privately make my own mistakes and grow up.
- I was comfortable around boys and never found them to be alien at all. But I find men and women different. One thing I will say about men: if they've had a good relationship with their mother, and are close with their mother, they are better partners for women. That is a fact. The best qualities men can have are dedication, loyalty, honesty and refraining from going elsewhere for their needs.
- I don't regret any of my marriages. They were all incredible, fun experiences. Some were marriages of whim – I was wild, they were wild, and we did wild things, but I don't regret them. Each one ended for different reasons. Some I wished didn't end the way they did, but they weren't failures; we just weren't partnered right.
With Michael Jackson, unfortunately, too much happened, too much got between us. There was a very deep strong love there; intense. But people got in the way, on my end and his end. We had so many people telling us what to do and intercepting and speaking on behalf of the other. Had it been just he and I, towards the end, I don't think we would have divorced.
- The title track on my album Storm & Grace is written for my son. It's about the kind of pressures and expectations placed on men. It's about how he's got the biggest heart but he's learnt how to put up a protective shell, which isn't necessarily a good thing. When men get hurt, they get more and more protective and closed off. I'm not sure how we can fix that. I wish there was a way."

Ted Richmond, Producer of 'World's Fair', Dies at 103: Belated news, producer Ted Richmond, who produced more than 60 movies from the 1940s through the 1970s including Elvis' 'It Happened At The World's Fair' (photo right) and his most successful movie the 1973 thriller "Papillon" (with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman), died in Paris on Dec 23 last year. He was 103.
For 40 years he produced movies in a variety of genres. There were Westerns such as "The Cimarron Kid," starring Audie Murphy, and "Return of the Seven," as well as
comedies. Richmond was also a producer on the Elvis Presley pic "It Happened at the World's Fair."
In the 1950s he partnered with his close friend Tyrone Power to form Copa Prods. In 1959, during the filming of "Solomon and Sheba," Richmond was devastated when Power, who was playing Solomon, suffered a fatal heart attack. Yul Brynner ultimately played the part opposite Gina Lollobrigida.
Richmond also worked with such stars as Beau Bridges, Charles Laughton, Boris Karloff, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Anne Bancroft, Rock Hudson, Charles Bronson and Bob Hope. The producer's last film was 1979's "The Fifth Musketeer."
Talking about 'It Happened at the World's Fair' Ted Richmond told the local paper, "Writers have been in Seattle recently, selecting locations and material.
|
|
While the Fair will be the background we also plan to include other facets of the Northwest, the orchards, the logging camps, in the picture which will be shot in colour and CinemaScope"
During filming to get across the fairgrounds Elvis had to ride through crowds of fairgoers in an open electrical vehicle. Although a security perimeter of sorts was attempted, "Girls laughingly assaulted the police who locked arms to keep the crowds from the singer.”
With inclement weather potentially delaying filming with Elvis, Ted Richmond joked, "I'm holding my breath at the rate of $6,000 an hour"!

Lisa Marie on Today Show Australia: Lisa Marie Presley will perform with her five piece band for eight Australian shows only when she tours in March as part of her STORM & GRACE WORLD TOUR. It’s her first Australian tour in eight years.
With all the hoopla that has surrounded her, it’s easy to forget that Lisa Marie Presley is at heart a simple Southern girl whose earliest musical memories are of obsessively listening to 45’s in her bedroom at Graceland.
In the interview Lisa Marie discuses the pressure of being Elvis' daughter and also how Elvis caught her practicing singing into a hairbrush when she was only three years old.
The Memphis-born Presley reclaims those roots on her latest album Storm and Grace released in Australia in 2012.
During her first-ever visit to Sun Studio in Memphis, Lisa shot a live video for "Weary," another track from Storm & Grace. The historic studio, considered by many to be the birthplace of rock & roll, was where her |
|
father, Elvis Presley, made his first recordings six decades ago.
Lisa Marie notes, "I’m compelled to do this because I’m a music lover and I feel that music is so important in the world. That’s what drives me — pouring your heart and soul into something and hoping that it can change someone’s life in some way. I’m looking forward to performing live and interacting with people who are there for the music and nothing else. Getting that instant reaction is the best part."
Go HERE to watch the 4 minute YouTube interview with her on Australia's Today show.

Another Elvis Movie in Production: Yet another Elvis movie, this time an indie-movie 'The Shangri-La Suite', is in production.
Twilight's Ashley Greene is playing Priscilla, while "Office Space" actor Ron Livingston is in the Elvis Presley role.
The pair recently shot scenes together at a hotel pool alongside child actress Alyvia Alyn Lind, who portrays their then-six-year-old daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
The film, which takes place in 1974, centres on two troubled mental hospital patients, Karen and Jack (Emily Browning and Luke Grimes), who fall in love and drive cross-country to try to murder Elvis during one of his concert appearances in Los Angeles.
The film is written and directed by Eddie O’Keefe. No release date has been set.

EPE wins dispute over 20 Year old 'Graceland.com' domain: Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. was this week awarded the 20 year old domain name graceland.com by three member UDRP panel.
EPE already owns the domain name Graceland.org, which as the domain holder pointed out was in fact parked and not used for the tourist attraction.
Here are the relevant allegations and findings:
EPE's Complainant allegation is that it is the owner of registered trademarks in the USA for GRACELAND for a wide variety of goods and services. It operates a licensing program granting the right to manufacture and sell Elvis Presley related merchandise worldwide. It owns over 30 domain names containing GRACELAND including <graceland.org> and <gracelandtours.info>.
The Respondent has owned graceland.com since 1994 and to date has
|
|
never used the registration for a legitimate purpose. Almost since its inception the website has shown bible quotes and advertisements for travel, tours and merchandise relating to Elvis Presley, specifically Graceland and related to goods and services covered by the Complainant’s trade mark registrations.
The Respondent offered to sell the Domain Name to the EPE for over $200,000 which is clearly well above the Respondent’s documented out of pocket costs related to the Domain Name.
Respondent has never at any time sought to cause any confusion between God’s work and the life or legacy of Elvis Presley. Since Elvis was known as "The King" the phrase "King of Kings" on the Respondent’s website distinguishes it and informs the visitor that the website does not originate from the Complainant or its predecessors in interest. Further Respondent is not using and has never used the Domain Name for commercial gain.

Britney Spears Wedding At Graceland?: Pop star Britney Spears is reportedly planning an attention-grabbing wedding to boyfriend David Lucado at Elvis' Graceland.
Wedding rumours swirled recently when Spears, who has dated legal firm employee Lucado for more than a year, was seen flashing a gold ring, reported Radar online.
"Britney wants to get as much attention and money for pictures with her third wedding as she did for her second, which is why she is considering reaching out to Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, to ask if she can be married in the Graceland Estate in Memphis, Tennessee," a source said.
Spears, 32, the mother of sons Sean Preston, 8, and Jayden James, 7, from her second marriage to Kevin Federline, has other plans too for her third wedding.
"Not only would the Graceland location, now a tourist attraction, be a visually stunning place for Brit and Dave to tie the knot, but it would be a convenient trip for most of their extended families, who are based in the south," the source added.
At least Britney already she has the right get-up to wear!

Lisa Marie Presley Down Under: Lisa Marie Presley is well-known for being Elvis' daughter and for having marriages to musician Danny Keough, pop singer Michael Jackson, briefly to actor Nicolas Cage, before marrying music producer Michael Lockwood.
While her personal life has remained in the headlines, Presley has worked tirelessly to break down the "former wife" and "daughter of" reputations and establish a successful singer/songwriter career of her own.
Her third album, Storm & Grace, has finally changed those views. She has earned praise from music critics and various media outlets including music bible Rolling Stone and EIN.
The magazine said Storm & Grace was the one "she was born to make — a raw, powerful country, folk and blues collection that finds her embracing her Southern roots and family name".
With her Australian tour starting next week Lisa Marie noted that she owes her recent success to finally creating an album of her own, "My recent freedom made me find my voice and find that I was comfortable on my own. |
|
It let me find myself instead of having a record company tell me 'to do it this way', 'that way', 'get this producer' or 'get that producer'."
Before working on the album, the 46-year-old took seven years off from the music business while she looked after her recent children, "I had twins and it turned my life completely upside down and rearranged it."
Lisa Marie resumed her song-writing again in 2009 writing 28 songs in eight months.
Her new producer T Bone Burnett, who has worked with Willie Nelson and Elton John, gave her the confidence to create a country-folk album. Lisa Marie noted, "It's much more organic, where my first two records were mostly rock, slick and over-produced. This album I just let it all go."

Kurt Russell Talks Elvis: Actor Kurt Russell is known for a myriad of roles in movies that span throughout his 52 year career, he even stared as ELVIS (photo right) in John Carpenter's 1979 biopic of the same name. Kurt Russell is an icon that many fans adore to this day.
When Kurt Russell first started his career, he appeared in a number of television shows and supporting roles in a couple of movies. Not many people realize this, but when Kurt Russell was 10 years old, he was able to act alongside the King himself, Elvis Presley in 'It Happened at the World’s Fair' (see pic below) . Recently Melissa Molina asked Russell whether he remembered anything from his interaction with Elvis. When the topic of Elvis came up, he leaned up against the wall, a small twinkle gleamed in his eye as a smile spread across his face.
... “It was my first brush with a real celebrity. I’ve never seen anything having to do with a real celebrity before. I didn’t really know who Elvis Presley was. I was a 10 year old kid. I knew Elvis Presley was a name that everybody knew. If I’d seen him, I didn’t know it. I wasn’t into music and I didn’t listen to music that much. So the first time he came on the set, a car went on the set, round 5000 women just broke through there and jumped on his car. We were all staring and I was thinking what’s going on there. This guy says ‘Well that’s Elvis. We won’t be able to get him in on this round.’ They backed the car up… it was just watching them attack the car. Wow. To a 10 year old kid |
|
it’s like ‘What are they doing? What are they thinking?’ He came out later, through a different way, and he’s just this really nice guy. I was just this kid and I asked him ‘What’s the deal with all those girls jumping on your car?’ He could see that I was just this innocent kid and responded with ‘Ah they get crazy.’ I told him ‘You should never come in that way again, you know.’ So I remember that. I remembered him having his car completely jumped up with girls.”
Kurt Russell's filmography continues to expand as he recently starred in the upcoming heist drama/comedy 'The Art of the Steal'. - Go HERE to see the full interview on ShockYa.com

Unlike the old touring version Elvis Presley In Concert, which featured Elvis’ original band and singers, this new show is designed for all Elvis fans past, present and future.
Using the latest technology, Elvis performs via state-of-the art video screens singing lead vocals backed by a live band, singers and an orchestra. Together, this multi-media creation puts the audience inside an Elvis Presley concert presented exactly like one of his classic live performances in a Las Vegas showroom. The contemporary staging and overall production create the illusion that Elvis is on stage for his finest concert performances.

An Evening With Elvis’ Friends and Original Musicians: Coming Soon - one of the best ELVIS concerts in Europe, the Special anniversary show featuring the people who knew and worked with The King.
The musical part of the show will include Elvis' band mates plus the leadsinger, the phenomenal Dwight Icenhower, who is regarded by many as one of the best Elvis tribute artists worldwide. Icenhower has won many awards, including “The World’s Best Elvis” in Memphis. They will be backed by a full band.

Is Tim Farrell the Son Of Elvis? - Marty Lacker comments: Regarding the weird news (see story below) that UK TV producers have evidently cracked the intriguing paternity case of whether a truck mechanic from Jackson Tim Farrell is the son of Elvis Presley - Marty Lacker commented to EIN....
....." If Farrell is Elvis' son than Lamar and I are the twins of Clark Gable.
People need to stop and think that if he was Elvis' son his mother would have come out in 1955 with her hand out for a big payday. This is just another bullcrap story by someone looking for publicity and a TV show doing the same. If Farrell looks like Vernon Presley, PeeWee Herman looks like Elvis.
- Marty
EIN notes that stories like this again show the POWER of Elvis' legacy and that any ELVIS reference still helps boost the ratings especially in the UK.
Can you imagine being with Elvis in 1963 and suggesting to him they'd still be dedicating TV programs FIFTY years in the future to his old paternity cases!! We wonder what Elvis would have thought?
---- Marty comments, "Elvis would have laughed!"

Gail Gerber (Girl Happy) Passed Away: Actress Gail Gerber (AKA Gail Gilmore) who was in Elvis' films 'Girl Happy' and 'Harum Scarum' passed away on March 2 due to complications from lung cancer. Gerber was born on October 4, 1937 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and began studying ballet at age seven. At fifteen she became the youngest member of Les Grandes Ballets Canadiennes in Montreal, soon moving to Toronto to work as an actress. She appeared on stage, on CBC TV as well the Ed Sullivan Show. She moved to Hollywood in 1963 and appeared on popular TV series such as My Three Sons and Perry Mason. She made her film debut in 1965's 'The Girls on the Beach' (co-starring The Beach Boys). Changing her name to Gail Gilmore, she then appeared opposite Elvis Presley in Girl Happy (1965) (right) and Harum Scarum (1965). Other film roles include 1965's 'Beach Ball' and 'Village of the Giants'.
In 'Harum Scarum' as "Sapphire" she was one of the gypsy dancers who befriend Elvis.

'Elvis; The Man & His Music' #103 Out Now: The new issue of EIN's favourite Elvis magazine is out now.
In the March 2014 issue:
- The Ron Pietrafeso interview- Denver Connection Part 2 -
- "Exclusive Photos! Intimate Secrets!" - Vintage magazine covers
- Rick Husky interview
- Your letters
- From The Time - 1957
- CD, DVD & Book Reviews
Denver Officer Ron Pietrafeso discusses his time in the seventies spent with Elvis including what happened when they sneaked Elvis into a restaurant hidden in a Police Uniform... "There's a couple of ladies sitting there and they kinda stared at Elvis as he walked by. We went into the restroom and, after he was finished, we walked out. We walked back down towards the table and nobody said a word. I mean, nobody said a word. ... Well, it wasn't fifteen minutes later - if it was that long -and he goes, "I gotta use the restroom again." I thought, "That's kinda weird. You just used the restroom." So, we got up, Elvis started walking.. and, as we walked by these same two ladies that were sitting there, he looked down at 'em and he gave 'em that Elvis grin. He heard this one lady say to the other one, "That policeman looks so much like Elvis."And the other lady said, "No, it can't be him." So, Elvis turned around and he goes, "It can't be who?" Well, when he
|
|
said that, I mean, these two women went berserk and the whole place knew who it was and... So, all the preparation that we had done to keep this thing under wraps was pretty much gone by then."
Rick Husky (right) was TKE president at Arkansas State College when he came up with the idea of presenting Elvis with a 'Man of the Year Award' for his considerable contributions to charity in October 1960. After meeting Elvis, Husky had multiple close-up encounters with The King. In this issue he also shares his memories with EMM, including...
"Several months after my first visit, I was invited by a cousin of Elvis' to visit Graceland during a weekend pool party Elvis was hosting. It was Elvis, with his guys and a number of very pretty Memphis girls, having fun by the pool. .... The pool party fun kept going that night when Elvis took the entire party to a Memphis amusement park, which he often rented after hours. He was like the Pied Piper, leading us all around the park to ride on the rides, from Ferris wheel, to merry-go-round to refreshment stands. I recall being part of the group who rode the

bumper cars with him, and I still remember Elvis wearing a big grin as he chased my car around with his bumper car, happily crashing into me - and then zooming off to zero in on his next target."

Priscilla compares Miley Cyrus to Elvis - Marty Lacker comments: Not surprisingly Marty Lacker sent EIN his view of Priscilla's comments when she recently compared Miley Cyrus to a young Elvis. (see story below)
... "I read those quotes by Priscilla and what a crock of crap that is..... Elvis didn't take his clothes off nor make the suggestive and sometimes vulgar acts that Miley Cyrus has done.
In addition Elvis' fame and popularity was because of his singing talents with his great voice not because of his gimmicks and clownish behavior like Miley and a few other of today's so-called stars have done. When Elvis moved his legs it was because that's what he felt in the music.
Many of the comments from Elvis' detractors in the beginning were because some who had never seen him thought he was black and their negative comments were race based. Many of the others were basically the same even though they saw he was white but they didn't like it because they felt he was corrupting their kids bringing that black influenced music into their lilly-white homes. I know it hurt Elvis personally because it made him feel that people didn't like him when all he was doing was singing and performing innocently in his own way with his clothes on and devoid of any clownish behavior.
This is just another example of the lack of understanding of Priscilla of her EX husband and the music industry. Just because she was married to him for a short time doesn't mean she really knew all about him." - Marty Lacker.
However as EIN noted back in October 2013 Priscilla basically agreed with Marty Lacker, then saying the opposite that, "Elvis' dance moves were never "planned or contrived." These were natural movements that Elvis felt
|
|
compelled to express as he was performing. Priscilla stressed that Elvis' performance was authentic and "not calculated" like so many performances are today in the music industry, specifically the Miley Cyrus twerking performance. Priscilla further voiced her opinion describing Elvis as extremely "talented and authentic" which is just what today's music business is lacking."
EIN guesses that it is STILL all about publicity and what the media frenzy wants to feed on.

Elvis Mobbed by screaming fans in Scotland: Fifty four years ago this week, Elvis was mobbed by screaming fans as plane stops at Prestwick Airport, Scotland on March 2, 1960.
The heartthrob was flying back to America after finishing his military service in Germany.
However, their plane made a stop in Prestwick - which would turn out to be Elvis's one and only visit to Scotland.
Wearing his full military uniform, the 25-year-old, posed for pictures, hugged fans and then asked: "Where am I?".
Fans, mostly teenage girls chanted 'We want Elvis' as he made his way from the plane into a waiting car.
Elvis chatted to the fans for a few moments then walked into the terminal buildings. Inside the terminal building the singer told them that he was looking forward to seeing his family again.
He said his plans for the future, "Well, I want to see my friends and relatives before I do anything"
There will be more movies. But Elvis said: "I would like to branch out and do something more serious. But nothing like Shakespeare . . . I know my limitations."

UK TV to reveal if Tim Farrell is Elvis' son!: In truly weird news, UK TV producers have evidently cracked the intriguing paternity case of whether Tim Farrell, a truck mechanic from Jackson USA, is the son of Elvis Presley. The answer is to be revealed on March 26.
"I’ve been wanting to know this since I was 23," said Farrell, who is 58. "It’s been this big question mark."
A Tennessee native Farrell never claimed to be Elvis’ son. That was his mother’s doing, and for many years he wanted no part of it.
His mother announced in 1978 that Farrell, then a young nightclub singer, was conceived in 1954 during her one-night-stand with Elvis in Memphis. She had circumstantial evidence suggesting it could be true, but no proof. Although he does bear a good facial similarity to Elvis' father Vernon. (see right) |
|
Newspapers printed her claims, and Farrell soon became so embarrassed by the attention that he gave up performing for 26 years. Naturally he wondered if his mother's story was true. Who wouldn’t?
"It doesn’t make any difference if the answer is yea or nay," Farrell said. "I just want to know."
Starting in 2004, Farrell began asking the Presley estate for help with DNA testing but was refused. He tried finding his own evidence but hit repeated roadblocks.
Going public with his search somehow lifted a burden and he started performing again around Jackson in 2006.
Now the TV show "Dead Famous DNA" has obtained supposed clippings of Elvis’ hair and did DNA testing for comparison with Farrell.
The answer will be broadcast on the show on UK's Channel 4 on March 26.
See EIN's previous conspiracy story on Tim Farrell from 2005.

"60 Years of Elvis" New Exhibit Opens: A telegram sent by Elvis Presley to his parents in November 1954 gives a glimpse into the young singer's priorities and his optimism, as he begins what will become a career as a rock `n' roll icon and cultural phenomenon.
"Hi babies," says the telegram, sent from Houston by Presley to his parents, Vernon and Gladys, who were in Memphis. "Here's the money to pay the bills. Don't tell no one how much I sent. Will send more next week. There is a card in the mail. Love, Elvis."
The note is being displayed in the "60 Years of Elvis" new exhibition at Graceland which opened Monday, that commemorates the 60 years since Presley cut his first record.

UPDATED- "Kissed By Elvis" Janet Fulton Interview: Janet Fulton was only 13 years-old when she attended Elvis' Canadian Ottawa concert on April 3rd 1957, despite her family having great reservations.
One of the highlights of her life was not only meeting Elvis but also being kissed by him, as shown in the famous photo.
Last month Janet Fulton contacted EIN regarding some other photos she was tracking down and was kind enough to let us interview her about the experience of meeting Elvis and being a young teenage fan in the fifties.
She tells us the experience of being at Elvis' famous Canadian concert in Ottawa "the nuns were saying it was the Devil's work" - and how meeting Elvis was a totally unexpected surprise.
Go here for our exclusive interview and for some great stories about Elvis in Ottawa in 1957.. This week EIN was contacted by Bonnie Mercer, the niece of Peter Mercer, the Elvis fan club President who walked Janet Fulton home that night! See Update.

Woody Harrelson, Elvis was the Key to my Success: Actor Woody Harrelson recently explained how he got into acting after impressing a girl with his Elvis impression.
The celebrated actor is currently starring alongside Matthew McConaughey in TV crime drama True Detective, a series that spans 17 years.
But the 52-year-old star’s life could have turned out very differently if it hadn't been for his first-class Elvis Presley impression.
"In high school, I realised that if you were a terrific athlete, you could attract girls. I wasn’t, so I had to look into some other possibilities. I got into theatre because a girl I liked saw me do an Elvis impersonation in the library and said I should be in the theatre. And I was like, ‘If she wants me to be in theatre, I’m going to be in theatre. Later on, I realised that most of us are never going to be rock stars, which is probably everybody’s real dream. So theatre is really our only chance to get up in front of a live audience."
His turn as Woody Boyd in popular TV show Cheers made the actor a household name and he's gone on to become one of the most respected movie stars in Hollywood.
A few years ago Harrelson (right) showed some great hip-swinging action when he performed an excellent Jailhouse Rock for Jay Leno’s appreciative audience.

Priscilla Presley compares Miley Cyrus to a young Elvis Presley: This week Priscilla remembers the backlash the young Elvis often faced, caused by his gyrating hips and flashy stage costumes.
When asked what she thought of the pop stars of today, such as Miley, Priscilla laughed that Elvis' antics were tame in comparison,
"I think she's very talented and maybe Miley feels she has to express herself and this is what she needs right now. I can't criticise, I really don't want to criticise because Elvis went through the same thing. Elvis had sex appeal, but one of things that bothered him was the fact that when he moved he got reprimanded by not only the public, but by a lot of people from high places who said, 'Oh my god what is this, it's vulgar.' But Elvis was brought up on gospel music and watching them sing and feeling it. It's soulful."
Previously, back in October 2013. Priscilla said "Don't compare Miley Cyrus to Elvis", declaring that the Miley Cyrus "twerking" controversy had no business being compared to the early days of Elvis' career.
Although EIN rightly noted at the at time that it DID cause the same Media reaction, which is surely what both wanted.
|
|
In the 1950s, Elvis Presley's shaking and grinding of his hips and legs were considered vulgar by some, earning him the nickname "Elvis the Pelvis." Elvis' June 5, 1956 appearance on The Milton Berle Show (above) provoked a public outcry against the singer protesting his "shocking" dance moves. This led to a toned-down performance by Elvis subsequently on The Steve Allen Show and a censored above-the-waist view on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Priscilla stressed that Elvis' performance was authentic and "not calculated" like so many performances are today in the music industry.

'Sin City's Hottest Ticket' New Import CD: Coming out soon is the new Straight Arrow's double feature CD release entitled 'Sin City's Hottest Ticket' featuring the August 23, 1973 Dinner and Midnight performances. Both shows are taken from original "booth recordings", taped by the same person who recorded previous Straight Arrow’s release, 'Endless Summer Festival'. The sound quality is far superior to the usual audience recordings. Ask your local dealer for samples! Following the great success of the ‘Aloha’ special, Elvis was more in demand than ever, and he was truly the hottest ticket in town. Las Vegas hotels at the time routinely booked their shows 20% over room capacity, because they knew that normally many of those who ordered tickets would not turn up for the shows. In Elvis’ case this caused problems, because virtually everybody who ordered tickets DID show up!
In private, Elvis was fighting his personal demons at the time, including a severe Demerol addiction, but on stage he was delivering the goods. Perhaps his delivery was not quite as tight as at earlier Vegas |

engagements, but he was in good voice and genuinly seemed to enjoy the interaction with the fans. The shows presented here are two solid, engaging performances with plenty of highlights, including a gorgeous ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and a rare-for-this-engagement one to last performance of ‘Something’.
It should be noted that neither of these superb-quality, off-line concert recordings have been previously issued. The August 23, 1973 Dinner show is completely new, even to die-hard Elvis fans. This concert was never in circulation, in any form.

"At War With Elvis Presley" by Johnnie Ray!: Taken from an old kinescope, a lovely tongue-in-cheek comedy TV skit showing the futility in trying to compete with Elvis in the mid-50's.
Johnnie Ray had a massive pop success in the early 1950s as was somewhat of a precursor to Elvis. His single 'Cry' was a smash Number 1 and his performances caused also caused teenage hysteria. 'Just Walkin' In the Rain' was another smash for him.
He also recorded the song 'Such A Night' in 1954 but it was however an extremely bland version compared to Elvis' 1960 remake.
Johnnie Ray's popularity started to decline after 1956 once Elvis and the real Rock'n'Roll hit the mainstream.

The new VIP exhibit - "60 Years of Elvis" – will open in this space on February 24, 2014. In this new exhibit, guests will explore the birth of rock ‘n’ roll music in July of 1954, with the recording of "That’s All Right" at Sun Studio.

'ELV1S 30#1 Hits' 7x Platinum in Australia?: Released back in 2002 Australia's chart association ARIA noted this week that 'ELV1S 30#1 Hits' has now gone 7x Platinum - sales close to 500,000 units.
Last week however it was in the Australian charts as being only 4x Platinum. Either ARIA has been slow in processing the on-going sales or 200,000 extra sales have suddenly occurred.
7x Platinum is fabulous news - as EIN noted in their 2002 review "EIN really hopes that this will sell and sell making it the classic family CD for Christmas. The improvement in sound quality makes it a 'must buy' for all of us, even those who already own all these tracks multiple times over."
Looks like our dreams came true!
EIN has contacted ARIA for confirmation.

'Doc Pomus' night at Grammy Museum LA: Paralyzed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself first as a blues singer, renaming himself Doc Pomus, then emerged as a one of the most brilliant songwriters of the early rock and roll era, writing 'Little Sister', 'Save the Last Dance for Me,' 'A Teenager in Love,' 'Viva Las Vegas,' and dozens of other hits. For most of his life Doc was confined to crutches and a wheelchair, but he lived more during his sixty-five years than others could experience in several lifetimes."
Other Elvis compositions were 'Doin' The Best I Can', 'Surrender', 'His Latest Flame', 'Suspicion', 'She's Not You', 'I Need Somebody To Lean On' and more.
Doc Pomus died back in 1991 from lung cancer aged 65.
EIN's roving LA reporters Joan and Paul Gansky attended the special night for the great Doc Pomus at the Grammy Museum. The recent documentary 'AKA Doc Pomus' was shown with a discussion afterwards with the movie's producer/director Will Hechter and song-writer Kenny Hirsch.
They reported back ...
|
|
... In the evening devoted to Doc Pomus, one of the stories explained was regarding "Mess of Blues". Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman were in England and ran into Lamar Fike at some event! He suggested they write a song for Elvis, and they said they had one. So Lamar said he would get it to Elvis personally. Apparently they had tried other artists with the song, but it did not work well in the recording studio... one was Bobby Darin. So, after that, Doc and Mort were asked to write more songs for Elvis...including for his movies.
Doc also divulged in the movie he had fallen on a really difficult time in 1977... he got through it with the help of royalties from the thousands of orders for all of Elvis records that occurred after Elvis' death.
Doc Pomus once explained, "I did talk to Elvis once on the telephone and that was when he was having problems with a lyric and he called from the recording session and I didn't even realize it was him. You know, somebody called me to talk about a problem with a lyric and I was at home in Long Island. The guy picked up the extension phone when the phone rang and they told me you are speaking to Presley, so that was the only time I ever |
|
spoke to him. I also tried to meet him at the New York press conference but the Colonel wouldn't let me talk to him. The Colonel said he would never let Presley talk to songwriters, you know. So, I didn't get a chance to speak to him that day and I was pretty much heartbroken. Right after the Press interview I went to have lunch in the hotel and next to me was Elvis father Vernon. I told him the story of how Colonel had stopped me from talking to Elvis, and Vernon said, "Elvis would love to meet you." So he went to get Elvis but Elvis was gone already because he was on his way to work that night."

The 20 Elvis Movie Tracks You Really Need To Hear: MOJO magazine recently published the article about their favourite Elvis soundtrack songs...
From slap-bass rock’n'roll joy to psych guitar freakouts and ballads of dejection, MOJO picks 20 glorious Elvis highlights from his most undervalued albums.
Last month Sony Music released 'The Perfect Elvis Soundtracks' – a 20 CD box set featuring 17 original Elvis Presley soundtrack albums and three new compilations. Covering the years 1957 to 1969, the Elvis box has been released as part of the label’s Perfect box-set series, which recently gave us 'The Johnny Cash Collection' and 'The Perfect Columbia Jazz Collection'. Yet while it’s easy to tag such a
|
|
superlative as ‘perfect’ onto the works of The Man In Black or the albums of Bill Evans, Art Blakey and Miles Davis, it’s a little more difficult to apply the adjective to LPs that feature such disregarded works as 'Old Macdonald', 'Yoga Is As Yoga Does' and 'Fort Lauderdale Chamber Of Commerce'.
With that in mind, MOJO's Andrew Male felt the need to reclaim Elvis’ movie years as a period where genius invention and accidental wildness often sat right alongside the lacklustre ballads and contractual honkers. Hold on tight though, because things are about to get very weird in Elvis land.
Here are a few of their thoughts and their MOJO selected top twenty.
- 1. 'Got A Lot O'Livin'To Do!'
Although it was his second movie Loving You was the first Elvis film with a full-length soundtrack. This vivifying little hillbilly-swing convulsion is the standout, cut in the studio just four days after Elvis found out he'd been classified 1A by the Memphis Draft Board.
- 2. 'Baby I Don't Care'
The soundtrack for Elvis' third movie, 1957's Jailhouse Rock, was originally released as a four-track EP. Everyone knows the title track but this is the best example of the late Presley mix of insolence and charm. Written overnight by an up-against-it Leiber and Stoller, it's also the most in-the-pocket performance of the film, thanks to D.J. Fontana's stomping drums, Scotty Moore's chatty, little guitar riff and that mean electric bass rumble, was played by Elvis himself.
- 3. 'Crawfish'
|
|
The opening song from Elvis' 1958 movie, the brilliant King Creole, Crawfish was cut at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California on January 15, 1958. His last soundtrack recording session before entering the army, it was overseen by the film's director Michael Curtin and Elvis' favourite engineer Thorne Nogar, responsible for the song's super-heavy bass-and-drums rhythm and Elvis' almost illicit interaction with Kitty White on those call-and-response vocals.
4. Pocket Full of Rainbows, 5. King Of The Whole Wide World, 6. Flaming Star, 7. Can't Help Falling In Love, 8. We're Comin' In Loaded, 9. Bossa Nova Baby, 10. Anyone Could Fall In Love With You,
- 11. I Need Somebody To Lean On
Made before Kissin' Cousins, Viva Las Vegas was a thing of vulgar colour-saturated wonder, the last truly big budget Elvis movie, the last with a big name co-star (Ann-Margret) and arguably the last with a fully serviceable soundtrack. Highlights include |
|
the title track, slinky Ann-Margret duet, 'You're The Boss' and this lonesome barroom blues, best heard in the movie, where it switches beguilingly from echoing interior monologue to neon-lit early-hours invocation.
12. Beginner's Luck, 13. Tomorrow Is A Long Time, 14. City By Night, 15. You Don’t Know Me, 16. Speedway 17. All I Needed Was The Rain, 18. A Little Less Conversation, 19. Clean Up Your Own Backyard,
- 20. Rubberneckin'
Elvis' last acting role was playing opposite Mary Tyler Moore as a hipster inner-city doctor who falls for his co-worker, without realising she is a nun. The opening ten minutes show Moore and her fellow plain-clothes nuns arriving in the sleaze-heart of a'70s ghetto, intercut with a scene in which Elvis entertains his fellow free-clinic teen volunteers with this lascivious Memphis soul groove-paean to girl-watching. If that doesn't make you want to watch the rest of this deeply off movie, nothing will.

Lisa Marie Presley to tour Australia: Lisa Marie Presley is heading to Australia for the first time in eight years and will perform eight shows only while in Australia for her Storm and Grace World Tour in March. - Go HERE for tickets
Lisa Marie will make stops at Sydney, Campbelltown, Canberra and Melbourne, amongst others. She'll perform songs from her album of the same name, which sees Presley return to her Southern roots with a mix of blues, folk and country.
Lisa Marie feels the material she will perform in Australia, produced by T Bone Burnett, is "stripped-down" and less toxic and angry than her earlier work from her first album 'To Whom It May Concern' from 2003.
"I was angry at all that I was potentially up against - all the expectations - and I was puffing myself up as a protective mechanism. At the same time, I was being pushed by the team around me to be a pop star, and to do all these crazy things that I really didn't want to do."
After relocating to England years ago and withdrawing into a tight rural community to raise her family, Presley was persuaded by her new manager Simon Fuller to record again.
"There were a few years there where everything around me had fallen apart," she says. "All the things that had become my foundation were gone and I had to shed a lot of skin. I found myself really vulnerable afterwards and that's what birthed the album's vibe. It's me without any attitude or anger at a time of rediscovery."

Mick Jagger also confirms New Elvis Movie: The legendary Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger has opened up about his desire to move from music to movies and also confirms his producer involvement with the new Elvis bio-pic. The iconic musician, 70, is currently tracking the lives of other famous movers - producing the James Brown biopic 'Get On Up' followed by the new Elvis Presley biopic 'Last Train to Memphis'.
The rock star told the Hollywood Reporter he can't get no satisfaction from writing his memoirs, and preferred to take on new projects instead.
Sir Mick said: "I think the rock 'n' roll memoir is a glutted market. I'd rather be doing something new. I'd rather be making new films, making new music, be touring. If someone wants to know what I did in 1965, they can look it up on Wikipedia without even spending any money."
