"60 Years of Elvis" New Exhibit Opens: A telegram sent by Elvis Presley to his parents in November 1954 gives a glimpse into the young singer's priorities and his optimism, as he begins what will become a career as a rock `n' roll icon and cultural phenomenon.
"Hi babies," says the telegram, sent from Houston by Presley to his parents, Vernon and Gladys, who were in Memphis. "Here's the money to pay the bills. Don't tell no one how much I sent. Will send more next week. There is a card in the mail. Love, Elvis."
The note is being displayed in the "60 Years of Elvis" new exhibition at Graceland which opened Monday, that commemorates the 60 years since Presley cut his first record.

Phillips played the song on July 8 on WHBQ radio and the switchboard lit up. Rock ‘n’ roll was born and the music world changed forever.
Fans can explore the birth of rock ‘n’ roll music and journey through the transformation of the would-be King of Rock ‘n’ Roll from delivery truck driver to world-wide singing sensation and star of the silver screen.
Rare artefacts displayed in the new exhibit include: Elvis’ personal “That’s All Right” 45 rpm record; a pay stub from his early days as a driver for Crown Electric; personal telegrams home; an original script from “Jailhouse Rock”; his 1955 RCA Records contract; Elvis’ last GRAMMY® Award for his Gospel hit “How Great Thou Art,” along with the jumpsuit he wore on stage that night; Elvis’ wardrobe from “Viva Las Vegas”; and the award presented to Graceland and the Presley family upon Elvis’ induction into the inaugural class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Following the great success of the ‘Aloha’ special, Elvis was more in demand than ever, and he was truly the hottest ticket in town. Las Vegas hotels at the time routinely booked their shows 20% over room capacity, because they knew that normally many of those who ordered tickets would not turn up for the shows. In Elvis’ case this caused problems, because virtually everybody who ordered tickets DID show up!

engagements, but he was in good voice and genuinly seemed to enjoy the interaction with the fans. The shows presented here are two solid, engaging performances with plenty of highlights, including a gorgeous ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and a rare-for-this-engagement one to last performance of ‘Something’.
It should be noted that neither of these superb-quality, off-line concert recordings have been previously issued. The August 23, 1973 Dinner show is completely new, even to die-hard Elvis fans. This concert was never in circulation, in any form.

Elvis in Court, 1956: On October 18 1956 Elvis found himself in a tricky position at a Memphis gas station where the situation got out of hand and Elvis had to protect himself.
During the scuffle Elvis gave the attendant Edd Hopper a black eye.
The next day Elvis was in Shelby Court contesting charges of assault and battery.
The case against Elvis was dismissed while the two gas station attendants were fined for their part in the altercation.

Priscilla Visits Elvis' Birthplace: Tourists at Elvis Presley's Tupelo birthplace got a surprise bonus, a glimpse of the singer's ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, making her first visit since the early 1970s.
She was given the keys to the city Saturday, and said she was taken aback the first time Presley showed her his childhood home.
"There were no additions when I was here last, there was just the little house he was born in," she said. "Coming here for the first time I was so shocked to see the place. Two rooms! I don't know how they lived — and with his grandmother and father and, of course, Gladys."
Elvis was 13 when his parents, Vernon and Gladys, moved to Memphis, Tenn., in 1948. He had his first recording contract in 1954, a year after graduating from high school.
Dick Guyton, director of the birthplace, said Presley took time to read

the description of every item in the museum.
Priscilla, who met Elvis as a teenager in Germany, said he spoke often and fondly of his life in east Tupelo.
"He told me of his humble beginnings: the home he was born in, the Assembly of God church that he went to," she told the small crowd. "I got to learn a lot about him there because it was a delicate time for him. He never forgot Tupelo, Mississippi. He never forgot where he was raised."
She said she's proud of what Tupelo has done to preserve his early life and will send as much tourism there as she can.
Before the tour, Mayor Jason Shelton, with the aid of Elvis' second cousin Brandon Presley, gave Priscilla Presley the key to the city and read a proclamation naming her an honorary citizen of Tupelo.
"I was absolutely star-stuck," Shelton said. "To be able to present Ms. Priscilla Presley with a key to the city and make her an honorary citizen is certainly a highlight of my administration."
Guyton showed Priscilla the mold of a statue of Elvis as a child, with guitar, that will be placed on the ridge along with another larger-than-life statue and a new pavilion.
"We plan to have it finished in time for the 80th birthday" next year, Guyton said. "We would like to invite you to be our guest at the 80th birthday party."

Legacy 'Live On Stage In Memphis' Pre-Order Now: Elvis 'Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis' celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the King's triumphant 1974 return to his hometown with an expanded 2CD release of the monumental concert experience.
"I wanted to record a live session in my hometown of Memphis…after all, this is where it all started out for me." - Elvis Presley.
This 2CD Legacy Edition will be released on March 18, 2014 and features several tracks left off the original '74 release in addition to a wealth of unreleased material.
Disc 2 of the remastered edition presents a recently located MONO recording of a "test run" performance held for an ecstatic live audience on March 18, 1974, at the Richmond Coliseum two days before his historic return to Memphis. (This has of course been released on the FTD '48 Hours To Memphis'.)
Disc 2 also includes five intimate tracks (three of them previously unreleased) cut at the RCA Studios in Hollywood on August 16, 1974. |

Elvis' "Long" American-Eagle Cape for Auction: Elvis Presley's full-length American-Eagle concert cape, custom made for the 1973 Aloha from Hawaii satellite performance will be auctioned next month by New Hampshire based, RR Auction.
The one-of-a-kind full-length cape, designed by Bill Belew, measures almost five feet long, is heavily inlaid with semi-precious stones on the reverse in a grand and colourful American eagle surrounded by stars, and weighs in at an impressive 12 pounds.
Presley had wanted a full-length cape to hide behind at the opening of the show, intending to drop the cape and reveal himself to the anxiously awaiting crowd.
He worked closely with Belew on the design of the eagle, wanting to express his patriotism for his country. However, when Presley tried on the cape during rehearsals, the weight almost pulled him over backwards, and it was decided that a smaller version was needed. Belew had less than 24 hours to create the replacement, and this cape was sent back to Graceland where it remained until a charity auction in 1999.
EIN notes that this is NOT the cape worn at the actual Aloha Concert - The auction site shows a picture of Elvis wearing the cape in concert which is deliberately mis-leading - It does come with a certificate of authenticity from Greg Howell of EPE, Graceland.
Starting Bid: $10,000. Note that at Julien's auctions in 2013 it was offered for $130,000 - $140,000!

US Post to Reissue Elvis Stamp: News that the US Postal Service will reissue their all-time top-selling stamp of Elvis Presley in 2015.
Beatle John Lennon, Dora the Explorer, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and actor Charlton Heston are among a pop-culture-heavy lineup of commemorative stamp subjects the U.S. Postal Service is planning for 2014, 2015 and the next couple of years.
Who or what image will be featured on stamps is kept top-secret, in part so postal officials can create a buzz when they announce new subjects. But The Washington Post obtained the most recent list of what’s planned, in first-class and other denominations, a collaboration between the Postal Service’s marketing staff and a committee of prominent Americans appointed by the postmaster general to come up with ideas.

Martina McBride covers 'Suspicious Minds': Elvis Presley may have had the big hit on Suspicious Minds, but Martina McBride drew inspiration from a different source for her version. McBride's cover appears on her forthcoming album Everlasting, produced by Don Was, and it has the same sort of Muscle Shoals Sound groove as a version by Dee Dee Warwick. Warwick, the younger sister of Dionne Warwick, had a minor R&B hit with her recording of the Mark James song in 1971.
"There aren't very many female versions of that song," McBride says, but "it makes sense for a woman to sing it. I focused on the lyrics on this record. This one is about reacting to jealousy and being possessive. Which women can really relate to."
Guitarist Reggie Young played on both Presley's and McBride's recordings of Suspicious Minds.
"We really wanted him on that song," McBride says "Don goes, 'What do you want to play?' Reggie says, 'I can play this or I can play that. Or I can just play what I played on the Elvis record.' I was, like, 'Hold up!

Take a moment! You don't hear that every day.' It was so cool. So at the very end of the song, he's doing the Elvis lick. So we gave a little nod to both versions."
The album will be released April 8. -

Elvis Live In Canada 1957 - Unreleased Footage: Sadly in very poor quality but 6 minutes of rare Canadian Elvis Live footage.
You can however hear the crowds roar and the imagine the excitement created by Elvis at the time.
"Due to the screams, you couldn't hear him sing but you could see his lips move!"
Toronto, Maple Leaf Gardens, April 2nd, believed to be the second concert.
If only the original films could be found and remastered.

'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' Still Selling: Amazing news from the UK as Elvis' massively successful 2013 compilation sneaks back up the UK charts going back into the UK Top 100 selling albums.
In the last two weeks the album rose from 125 up to 98 this week.

"At War With Elvis Presley" by Johnnie Ray!: Taken from an old kinescope, a lovely tongue-in-cheek comedy TV skit showing the futility in trying to compete with Elvis in the mid-50's.
Johnnie Ray had a massive pop success in the early 1950s as was somewhat of a precursor to Elvis. His single 'Cry' was a smash Number 1 and his performances caused also caused teenage hysteria. 'Just Walkin' In the Rain' was another smash for him.
He also recorded the song 'Such A Night' in 1954 but it was however an extremely bland version compared to Elvis' 1960 remake.
Johnnie Ray's popularity started to decline after 1956 once Elvis and the real Rock'n'Roll hit the mainstream.

'Elvis… Through His Daughter’s Eyes' New Video Tour: After two years the acclaimed VIP exhibit at Graceland, "Elvis… Through His Daughter’s Eyes" recently ended its run to make way for an all new VIP exhibit coming later this month. The exhibit looks at Lisa Marie's experience of growing up with a famous father and features items assembled by Lisa Marie and the Graceland Archives team. Home movies, toys and rarely-seen family mementos are among the many items that were on display.
The new VIP exhibit - "60 Years of Elvis" – will open in this space on February 24, 2014. In this new exhibit, guests will explore the birth of rock ‘n’ roll music in July of 1954, with the recording of "That’s All Right" at Sun Studio.

.. .. The fact that James deleted my two comments on his Facebook page in opposition to what he has said and done shows what a weak character he has. It's OK for him to diss Red, Sonny and Hebler but he can't handle when someone truthfully fires back at him. His hypocritical so-called "Good Christian" values are a joke. He chastises Red and people who have made money off of Elvis and others yet he has made tons of money touring with the TCB Band because of Elvis since Elvis has died. He sure as hell hasn't done those gigs for free.
People who commented on James' Facebook page kissing James' behind are pitiful. Red, Sonny and Dave were willing to take a bullet for Elvis, James can't say the same.
What they wrote was needed for Elvis' benefit for more ways than one because when we talked to Elvis about what he was doing to himself he wouldn't listen. Fact is Elvis pulled a gun on Red when Red talked to him about it.

James Burton acts like he was this close person to Elvis when all he did was play his guitar on stage with him and then after the show went on his merry way. Red, Sonny, Dave and the rest of us were with Elvis almost 24/7 for many years and we loved him just as he loved us. James has a right to perform and think whatever and wherever he wants but it's shame he doesn't have enough class not to put his reason out in public and disrespect those guys that way, shows what a little man her is. In terms of the guys that wrote books including me, let me repeat something Elvis' used to quote and paraphrase from that popular song, "Don't criticize until you've walked a mile in my effin' shoes"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elvis Autographed Candid Photos on EBay: Three lovely new photos plus Elvis' autograph are for sale on EBay for the rather high price of US$3,500.
There is an incredible story of how this autograph was obtained. John Black had just purchased the newest Polaroid Land Camera in New York City and boarded his flight to California. Aboard the plane he looked up and saw Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley. He quickly snapped a picture that came out overexposed because the camera setting wasn't correct. This picture is included in the lot. He asked Elvis to sit on the vacant seat beside him and spent the flight talking with Elvis. Another two photos were shot and came out great. One is an incredible photo of Elvis looking right at the camera. One was autographed on the back. Col Parker asked for the photos but Elvis insisted Mr Black could keep his photos. Actually one has fingerprints (Elvis's?) where both handled the photo when the sealant was still wet. Included is a typed letter of the story and a JSA notarized letter confirming the authenticity.

'The Elvis Experience' Dave Hebler Interview: There is a new interview by Bob Wilson to help promote Dave Hebler's new DVD 'The Elvis Experience'.
It includes... Elvis Presley arrived at Dave Hebler’s martial arts studio in Glendora, California wearing a turban in 1972. "I didn’t know he was gonna come in dressed like that", remembered Dave. An inquiry into why ‘E’ was adorned with this headgear was answered by the King remarking that his hair "looked like shit". Dave made an impression on Elvis quickly with his ‘Kenpo’ proficiency and his no nonsense demeanor. He was given a ‘TCB’ necklace, and invited to join the Memphis Mafia in short order.
Hebler explains that he initially "was not a fan when he went to work" for Elvis, but he became one "the first time I ever saw him perform." Dave’s "jaw dropped the first time I saw how good he was." It also left quite an impression on the master martial artist that the elite of the entertainment industry would stand in line to pay homage to the boy from Tupelo.

What Happened' which the Presley faithful found shocking when it was first published on July 12th, 1977.
Hebler received 40,000 hate letters that for his efforts, Ballantine Books related that they usually receive one letter for every 700 people who read a publication. Letters poured in blaming the only Memphis Mafia members to call attention to the King wearing no clothes for having betrayed their boss.
At the end of a press conference that Dave and Sonny West held right after Elvis expired from his excesses, Hebler asked a rhetorical question that seems a fitting epitaph. Hebler answered the ire of reporters with the following fitting question. "How do you protect somebody from themselves?"
Hebler relates that "without drugs Elvis was the greatest guy I ever met in my life." Without them, Presley would likely have brought more joy to family, friends, and the world at large decades into the future. Dave Hebler can hold his head high in having taken a serious personal risk in trying to afford the opportunity for Elvis to have extended his time among us.

Elvis' 1968 Cadillac Eldorado for Sale: For sale on Ebay - The story behind this car is well known and it has an incredible history. Elvis Presley spotted this Topaz Gold Firemist beauty parked outside a Memphis Cadillac dealer showroom on December 28, 1967 and decided on the spot that he had to have it. He immediately made it his daily transportation and reportedly used the car for approximately thirteen-months. At one point the car would not start and Elvis furthered his reputation for shooting displeasing inanimate objects by deploying his side-arm and plugging the car in the right front fender. The bullet hole still remains there today. Elvis drove the car up until the birth of his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, on February 1, 1968. A short time afterwards, Elvis gave the Cadillac to the stepfather of his wife, Priscilla Presley, as a gift. It saw very little use until being purchased by a Mr. Johnny Mac who imported it to Australia and used it for promotional purposes. 'ELV1S 30#1 Hits' 7x Platinum in Australia?: Released back in 2002 Australia's chart association ARIA noted this week that 'ELV1S 30#1 Hits' has now gone 7x Platinum - sales close to 500,000 units.
Last week however it was in the Australian charts as being only 4x Platinum. Either ARIA has been slow in processing the on-going sales or 200,000 extra sales have suddenly occurred.
7x Platinum is fabulous news - as EIN noted in their 2002 review "EIN really hopes that this will sell and sell making it the classic family CD for Christmas. The improvement in sound quality makes it a 'must buy' for all of us, even those who already own all these tracks multiple times over."
Looks like our dreams came true!

James Burton and the 2014 TCB Cruise: The upcoming Dennis Jale TCB European Cruise was to have featured the TCB Band - as well as Red West as a special guest.
Two days ago James Burton (surely one of most important performers on the cruise) announced that he would not be on the cruise if Red West was also going to be on the ship.
James Burton wrote..
.... I will NOT be on the Dennis Jale & TCB Cruise September 2014 with Red West.
I have always enjoyed performing with Dennis and all the guys. No one could ask for a better person to work with.
I would like to say that as a Christian, I forgave Red West for writing his book years ago. This has nothing to do with forgiveness.
I also respected him for going ahead with his life and becoming a great actor and was excited to see him in movies and TV.
I wish him ALL OF GOD's BLESSINGS.

'Doc Pomus' night at Grammy Museum LA: Paralyzed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself first as a blues singer, renaming himself Doc Pomus, then emerged as a one of the most brilliant songwriters of the early rock and roll era, writing 'Little Sister', 'Save the Last Dance for Me,' 'A Teenager in Love,' 'Viva Las Vegas,' and dozens of other hits. For most of his life Doc was confined to crutches and a wheelchair, but he lived more during his sixty-five years than others could experience in several lifetimes."
Other Elvis compositions were 'Doin' The Best I Can', 'Surrender', 'His Latest Flame', 'Suspicion', 'She's Not You', 'I Need Somebody To Lean On' and more.
Doc Pomus died back in 1991 from lung cancer aged 65.
EIN's roving LA reporters Joan and Paul Gansky attended the special night for the great Doc Pomus at the Grammy Museum. The recent documentary 'AKA Doc Pomus' was shown with a discussion afterwards with the movie's producer/director Will Hechter and song-writer Kenny Hirsch.

... In the evening devoted to Doc Pomus, one of the stories explained was regarding "Mess of Blues". Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman were in England and ran into Lamar Fike at some event! He suggested they write a song for Elvis, and they said they had one. So Lamar said he would get it to Elvis personally. Apparently they had tried other artists with the song, but it did not work well in the recording studio... one was Bobby Darin. So, after that, Doc and Mort were asked to write more songs for Elvis...including for his movies.
Doc also divulged in the movie he had fallen on a really difficult time in 1977... he got through it with the help of royalties from the thousands of orders for all of Elvis records that occurred after Elvis' death.
Doc Pomus once explained, "I did talk to Elvis once on the telephone and that was when he was having problems with a lyric and he called from the recording session and I didn't even realize it was him. You know, somebody called me to talk about a problem with a lyric and I was at home in Long Island. The guy picked up the extension phone when the phone rang and they told me you are speaking to Presley, so that was the only time I ever |

spoke to him. I also tried to meet him at the New York press conference but the Colonel wouldn't let me talk to him. The Colonel said he would never let Presley talk to songwriters, you know. So, I didn't get a chance to speak to him that day and I was pretty much heartbroken. Right after the Press interview I went to have lunch in the hotel and next to me was Elvis father Vernon. I told him the story of how Colonel had stopped me from talking to Elvis, and Vernon said, "Elvis would love to meet you." So he went to get Elvis but Elvis was gone already because he was on his way to work that night."

Last month Sony Music released 'The Perfect Elvis Soundtracks' – a 20 CD box set featuring 17 original Elvis Presley soundtrack albums and three new compilations. Covering the years 1957 to 1969, the Elvis box has been released as part of the label’s Perfect box-set series, which recently gave us 'The Johnny Cash Collection' and 'The Perfect Columbia Jazz Collection'. Yet while it’s easy to tag such a

superlative as ‘perfect’ onto the works of The Man In Black or the albums of Bill Evans, Art Blakey and Miles Davis, it’s a little more difficult to apply the adjective to LPs that feature such disregarded works as 'Old Macdonald', 'Yoga Is As Yoga Does' and 'Fort Lauderdale Chamber Of Commerce'.
With that in mind, MOJO's Andrew Male felt the need to reclaim Elvis’ movie years as a period where genius invention and accidental wildness often sat right alongside the lacklustre ballads and contractual honkers. Hold on tight though, because things are about to get very weird in Elvis land.
Here are a few of their thoughts and their MOJO selected top twenty.
- 1. 'Got A Lot O'Livin'To Do!'
Although it was his second movie Loving You was the first Elvis film with a full-length soundtrack. This vivifying little hillbilly-swing convulsion is the standout, cut in the studio just four days after Elvis found out he'd been classified 1A by the Memphis Draft Board.
- 2. 'Baby I Don't Care'
The soundtrack for Elvis' third movie, 1957's Jailhouse Rock, was originally released as a four-track EP. Everyone knows the title track but this is the best example of the late Presley mix of insolence and charm. Written overnight by an up-against-it Leiber and Stoller, it's also the most in-the-pocket performance of the film, thanks to D.J. Fontana's stomping drums, Scotty Moore's chatty, little guitar riff and that mean electric bass rumble, was played by Elvis himself.
- 3. 'Crawfish'

The opening song from Elvis' 1958 movie, the brilliant King Creole, Crawfish was cut at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California on January 15, 1958. His last soundtrack recording session before entering the army, it was overseen by the film's director Michael Curtin and Elvis' favourite engineer Thorne Nogar, responsible for the song's super-heavy bass-and-drums rhythm and Elvis' almost illicit interaction with Kitty White on those call-and-response vocals.

the title track, slinky Ann-Margret duet, 'You're The Boss' and this lonesome barroom blues, best heard in the movie, where it switches beguilingly from echoing interior monologue to neon-lit early-hours invocation.

Elvis' last acting role was playing opposite Mary Tyler Moore as a hipster inner-city doctor who falls for his co-worker, without realising she is a nun. The opening ten minutes show Moore and her fellow plain-clothes nuns arriving in the sleaze-heart of a'70s ghetto, intercut with a scene in which Elvis entertains his fellow free-clinic teen volunteers with this lascivious Memphis soul groove-paean to girl-watching. If that doesn't make you want to watch the rest of this deeply off movie, nothing will.

Elvis and The Beatles: Today the media celebrated The Beatles’ tumultuous introduction to the US with their famous debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" 50 years ago, and in the programme the influence of Elvis on their music was noted several times. The Shreveport Times also wrote about how Northwest Louisiana impacted the British foursome.
... Not that they ever performed locally, but without the influence of a number of local musicians, The Beatles as we know them might have wound up a far different band, or likely never would have made it out of the 1960s British blues-rock circuit.
The first and perhaps greatest local influence on the band was Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, whose strong, 12-string guitar-based folk/blues sound profoundly influenced Lonnie Donegan and the British skiffle movement.
Beatles guitarist and singer George Harrison, who died in 2001, has been quoted in many scholarly publications as acknowledging the debt to the singer who is buried near Mooringsport. "No Lead Belly, no Beatles" is a notable Harrison sentiment.

was identified by the late John Lennon as one of the band’s greatest influences. "Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. If there hadn't been Elvis, there would not have been the Beatles," Lennon is quoted as saying.
There also are contemporary players who have influenced or worked with the boys from Liverpool. Topping the list would be guitarist James Burton and bassist Joe Osborn, both of whom have returned to live and work in Shreveport after international careers.
Burton, famous for his lead guitar work with artists ranging from Elvis Presley and Rick Nelson to John Denver and Emmylou Harris, was a player the Beatles listened to and emulated.
"Those early sounds that we did, I just hated them," George Harrison said in an interview. "They sounded so puny. I mean, listening to James Burton playing on the Rick Nelson records … and we would come up with our stuff that was so feeble."
Burton, who had a friendship with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, two years later had a good bonding with George Harrison.
"I was in London to perform at Albert Hall," James Burton recalled. "George had called and said he was coming, that he wanted to meet me. He was just a normal, great guy. He showed me a speeding ticket and he said ‘I got this because of you.’ He was driving his Porsche and was going quite fast, didn’t want to be late for the show.
"George was a wonderful guy, really a great friend. Playing on his album was a great treat," Burton said. "Jim Horn, another good friend, was there playing sax. We would take lunch breaks with the family. It was like being at home. George was a down-to-earth person, a great guy."
Another local player who worked with The Beatles was drummer D.J. Fontana, who played more than a dozen years with Elvis also played on Ringo Starr's "Beaucoups of Blues" album in 1970.

Englebert Humperdinck Talks Elvis: Journalist and Author Marshall Terrill recently talked to Englebert Humperdinck - and in the interview he of course talks about Elvis.
There’s an old saying in show business that was tailor-made for Englebert Humperdinck: a singer needs songs, but an entertainer just needs a stage.
Best known for number-one hits 'Release Me,' 'The Last Waltz' and 'A Man Without Love' Humperdinck is a four-time Grammy nominee, a Golden Globe recipient, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That’s in addition to his 63 gold and 24 platinum records.
Humperdinck: I consider myself a thespian of song, and I do two things — I sing through my eyes as well as with my voice. I have never ignored the fact that my fans have supported me and have always paid attention to them. I sign every autograph and shake every hand and have done so for years.
Q: Elvis Presley once confided to his bodyguard that he felt he found a twin brother he had lost at birth when he met you. Did you know he felt that way about you?
Humperdinck: Is that what Elvis said? God, I’ve gone all cold. Honest to goodness I’m not kidding — I’ve got bumps all over my skin. I never knew he felt that way about me. I idolized Elvis and thought he was the greatest talent ever and the most real performer I’ve ever come across.

When you watched Elvis work on stage, you saw that reality come through He never took his image seriously and often made fun of himself. That was the great thing about him. He had a great deal of humility, and I learned all sorts of messages just watching him.
I remember once teasing him and said, ‘You know Elvis, you stole my sideburns.’ He replied in that beautiful Southern accent of his, ‘Well, if it looks good on you, it’ll look good on me!’
I loved talking to Elvis because he was a very real person. The first time I ever met him, usually you shake hands, but he came up to me and embraced me. I thought that was a fantastic thing to do. He just put his arms around me and gave me a hug. I’m conservative and shy by nature, but when Elvis did that, I felt so good.
Then the first thing he said was, ‘You know, I’ve got all of your albums?’ I said, ‘You’ve got my albums?’
I had been following Elvis from the start of his career. I can remember when he was stationed in Germany (1958-1960). I was stationed there at the same time, and I’d play his records on the jukebox in the mess hall. Then all those years later we got together and became friends. Elvis was an amazing man, and I miss him."

Lisa Marie Presley to tour Australia: Lisa Marie Presley is heading to Australia for the first time in eight years and will perform eight shows only while in Australia for her Storm and Grace World Tour in March.
Lisa Marie will make stops at Sydney, Campbelltown, Canberra and Melbourne, amongst others. She'll perform songs from her album of the same name, which sees Presley return to her Southern roots with a mix of blues, folk and country.
Lisa Marie feels the material she will perform in Australia, produced by T Bone Burnett, is "stripped-down" and less toxic and angry than her earlier work from her first album 'To Whom It May Concern' from 2003.
"I was angry at all that I was potentially up against - all the expectations - and I was puffing myself up as a protective mechanism. At the same time, I was being pushed by the team around me to be a pop star, and to do all these crazy things that I really didn't want to do."
After relocating to England years ago and withdrawing into a tight rural community to raise her family, Presley was persuaded by her new manager Simon Fuller to record again.
"There were a few years there where everything around me had fallen apart," she says. "All the things that had become my foundation were gone and I had to shed a lot of skin. I found myself really vulnerable afterwards and that's what birthed the album's vibe. It's me without any attitude or anger at a time of rediscovery."

Bruno Mars, or is it Elvis at the Super-Bowl!: When Bruno Mars took to the world’s largest stage at halftime of the Super Bowl, it wasn’t the first time the Grammy Award-winning singer had shown his Elvis influences.
He even did the same at the Met Life Stadium way back in 1990, when the now 28 year old pop superstar and Hawaiian native was just 4 and he also stole the show.
That time instead of performing before a record TV audience as the Super Bowl halftime headliner, it was in a cameo role at halftime of the 1990 Aloha Bowl and he performed as Lil' Elvis in the Honeymoon in Las Vegas-themed show!

Tupelo Council holds off funding Elvis Project and park: Some members of the Tupelo City Council have questions about where the money should come from for projects at two local attractions.
Councilmen Lynn Bryan and Markel Whittington persuaded a majority Tuesday night to hold off on spending money on two projects: $100,000 for improvements at the Elvis Presley Birthplace and $150,000 for the planned Vietnam Veterans Wall and the mounting of a military jet at Veteran's Park.
The City Council agreed to not spend the money until a work session is held on the matter. That's expected to happen next week.
Whittington said after the meeting he believes the money for those projects should come from the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Lisa Marie Presley's 46th Birthday Party: Lisa Marie Presley celebrated her 46th birthday (can you believe it?) at the weekend with daughter Riley Keough, 24, and mother Priscilla Presley, 68, at LA's hotspot No Vacancy on Saturday night.
Other friends and family in attendance included Lisa‘s love Michael Lockwood, her son Ben (with girlfriend Alexa), Zoe Kravitz, Ellen Page, Lisa‘s best friend Linda Ramone (with boyfriend J.D. King of the band The Olms), Jacqui Getty, Riley‘s boyfriend Ben Smith-Petersen and Priscilla‘s sister Michelle Beaulieu Hovey.
Attendees also enjoyed a chocolate fondue station, tarot card readings, and magic shows. Toward the end of the night, a tightrope walker performed!

New FTD 'Summer Festival' Soundboard: The following teaser promo-poster has been put out by FTD publicising their soon-to-be-confirmed next soundboard release.
There is a suggestion that it might be a 'Summer Festival 1972' special and that it could be the September 4th 1972 Las Vegas dinner show where 250 British fan club members were present. This concert started interestingly with See See Rider / Johnny B. Goode / Until It's Time For You To Go (no 'I Got A Woman') and featured an excellent Suspicious Minds, For The Good Times, Big Hunk O' Love, You Gave Me A Mountain final section. In the Introductions Elvis even thanked the British fans for coming over.
It has been released on bootleg before (by Rock Legends) but not in particularly good audio quality. IF Ernst has tracked down a good quality soundboard then this will be a very fine FTD release.

"I read that story from the writer Asquith, who by the way I never heard nor remember coming on any set at of Elvis' movies at MGM or anywhere else. I for one am tired of people trying to tie or compare any of these artists of today, or even yesterday, to Elvis.
First of all Bieber is not in the same league as Elvis, for one thing Elvis could really sing and he never needed help from technology in the studio to sound fantastic no matter what he sang. The same can't be said for the little punk Bieber who really can't sing all that well - what has got him popular is because he's cute and his voice and singing ability is greatly enhanced in the studio. As for Asquith's claim that Elvis fed him well, maybe Parker took him to lunch if and when he visited but Elvis had nothing to do with that. In addition Elvis didn't do the borderline criminal things Bieber has done that is getting him in trouble, any negative crap said about Elvis in the early years came from idiotic phony goody two shoes and hypocritical so-called "Good Christians" who commented about Elvis' movements on stage and some of them were racists who thought Elvis was black when they first heard his records.

I was invited to have lunch with Elvis many times when he was shooting his musicals at MGM. He was the perfect host making sure his guests were well fed and always handed out a signed copy of his latest LP. plus an invitation to the premiere of his movie... but all this would have ended if I had let a few cats out of the bag about his private life. My motto in Hollywood was simple, why bite the hand that feeds you, furthermore I thought everyone was entitled to a private life.

Mercia Fiore and Elvis: TV station WTMJ Michele Fiore’s mother Mercia Fiore actually worked with Elvis Presley. Her life story is about music, a legend, and most of all about love. She recalls the day her agent got a call wanting a girl singer to open for Elvis Presley. Mercia got the job, and ultimately toured with Presley.
At the time Elvis's style and suggestive moves were controversial but driving girls wild. Mercia recalls sending her parents a postcard assuring them Elvis was a nice guy.
In 1956 she wrote, "Elvis was very sweet last night he was trying to make friends with me." Mercia remembers the legend as kind and gentle. She says he would even applaud backstage as she sang.
One day, she felt sorry for a young girl who had camped outside to see the star. The girl begged her to get close to Elvis, promising to keep her distance. Well, she did not.
Mercia exclaims. "As soon as she saw Elvis, she jumped on him like an animal. She pulled his hair, ripped his clothes! I was so embarrassed I felt so bad for Elvis!"
But Elvis took it all in stride. Mercia smiles as she shares his reaction. "He came up to me afterward. He said, "I know you feel bad but it wasn't your fault, this is just the way it is for my life now. I'm not angry with you for this. It was just something that happened!" |

Mercia does not believe that Elvis was trying to hit on her. She notes sweetly, "He was was being very polite and very nice." But during that time Mercia had fallen in love with Frank, a local orchestra leader and pianist. She chose to leave the tour.
Elvis was shocked and surprised but made one request to Mercia. Elvis told her, "I want you to write and tell me about your life, what made you the way you are."
Years passed, Mercia was busy with her young family. But when Elvis died Mercia was moved to write the book "What Elvis Never Knew." She calls her book a legacy to Elvis.
Did she have any regrets about leaving a job with the King? Mercia gets emotional when she replies, "No, because I have my blessed children, and my wonderful husband. I wouldn't change the anything in the world for him!" -

'Praise To The King' New Import CD: To be released shortly on the "SR" label "Praise to the King" featuring the unreleased show from Las Vegas August 23, 1971 Midnight Show. SR's publicity says.. After a long search they located a good tape that gives us the possibility to produce another show from Elvis fifth season.
The midnight show from August 23th, has no surprises in the tracklist but the show is extremely solid and good, Elvis sings all the best from the previous seasons including his new single I’m leaving. The sound is good and powerful you can hear clear all the instruments in particular the incredible job on the drums made from Ronnie Tutt. Elvis' performance on these early season nights is superb as he is still performing to the best of his ability. Although he delivers short shows they are delivered in a very intense, crisp and fresh manner that cannot be denied. Elvis was on stage to have fun and demonstrated this during the older, classic numbers, but songs such as 'Proud Mary, Polk Salad Annie' and 'Sweet Caroline' never sounded better. As Bonus we

Music groups shares Elvis’ love of Gospel: Two music groups are joining forces to share a little Graceland across the US. Gospel group Mark209 and international ETA Mark Anthony are collaborating on a new album and show.
Mark209 is a country gospel group from Nashville Tennessee. Mark Anthony is an international Elvis Presley tribute artist from Australia.
The duo is starting a new show called "From Graceland to the Promised Land".
The two groups are combining because they want to teach their audiences about the roots of Elvis' music: gospel music. They are singing traditional Elvis songs, original Mark209 gospel songs, and plenty of hybrid gospel/Elvis songs.
They are kicking off their national tour this weekend at the Benton Event Center. They are starting their show in Arkansas because here is where they are recording their duo album.
Mark209 is made up of Jym Howe, Ray Woconish, Bryan James Hatton, and Nathaniel Justice. The group is three years old with multiple albums under their belt already.
Mark Anthony is an international Elvis tribute artist. He won the title of "Grand Champion Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of the South Pacific" in 2007. He won the title again in 2008. In 2011, he placed in the top 5 and was awarded the very first "Spirit of Elvis" award presented to him by EPE.

Elsa Cardenas Love Affair with Elvis: While celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie "Fun In Acapulco," Mexican actress Elsa Cárdenas revealed she had a little affair with the King of Rock ‘n Roll. According to Cárdenas, 78, the first thing Elvis said to her is that she was very pretty, to which she replied that he was very good looking too. She went on to explain that when the two met, Elvis was already in a relationship with Priscilla, but they weren’t married yet.
Cárdenas revealed that she and the rock star were "kind of a couple." "Everyone knew, and it was all right because there was nothing yet, they still weren’t married, you know, you’re young and beautiful and you’re chosen to be in a movie with one of the biggest stars of the time, well, the biggest, so you can imagine....
Elvis was extremely attractive, always joking and was nice to his co-stars. Our friendship lasted for a few years before it subsided as our lives went their separate ways." Elsa revealed.
Presley and Priscilla got married four years later in 1967 and separated almost seven years after that.
Cárdenas is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the movie industry. Besides Presley, she also acted alongside another legend, James Dean in the film "Giant," Dean’s last movie before his untimely death.

Elvis Palm Springs Home on sale for $3.95Mill! Elvis' Palm Springs, "Graceland West" residence has hit the listing market once again with an asking price of $3.95 million.
As the story goes, Reno Fontana, a big fan of Elvis Presley (he calls himself an 'Elvis Promoter') purchased the home from a Japanese businessman in 2003 for about $1.25 million and dubbed it 'Graceland West'. Over the years, he used the estate to not only promote Presley but also used it to air the King of Pop Michael Jackson's live memorial service in 2009.
However, the bank foreclosed on Fontana and another investor Rade Raicevic took over the home. Raicevic wanted to sell it off for $4 million but he also ran into financial trouble and in 2012, the U.S. Bank National Association took over the home, reports Curbed.
While the ownership of Graceland West is still disputable, it has

hit the listing market for almost $4 million. According to the listing at Estately, the residence is a 5040 square feet home, sitting on a prime 2 acre lot.

Tupelo 2014 Elvis Festival tickets On sale: Winter weather couldn't keep loyal Elvis Presley fans from lining up in front of the Tupelo Elvis Festival office. Tickets went on sale last week for the ETA concerts and competitions and it's all part of the annual Tupelo Elvis Festival.
The 16th anniversary Tupelo Elvis Festival will be held June 5 – 8, 2014.
Plenty of keen locals and a few from out of state dressed warmly and stood in line, many for hours, waiting to buy ticket packages for this year's festival.

for as much as $175 each and include several days of music. The Elvis competitions and concerts move this year from the Lyric Theater to the BancorpSouth Arena.

'The Nation's Favourite Elvis Songs' Import DVD: The Nation's Favourite Elvis Songs will be released finally on a real dvd for all the fans around the world by "TCB" productions. This is not an official release. Elvis fans in the UK had the opportunity to vote for their favorite Elvis song with a countdown show dedicated to the king. "The Nation's Favourite Elvis Songs" debuted on ITV in the United Kingdom with "Always On My Mind" taking the No.1 spot.
This special told the story behind the 20 greatest songs ever recorded by Elvis Presley, the King of Rock'n'Roll. Mixing rich archive footage and home videos with new interviews, the documentary painted a picture of the man behind the music, telling the story of how these timeless songs came about and what impact they had on the world. The show featured different generations of international pop stars and musicians influenced by Elvis including Michael Bublé, Sir Cliff Richard, Suzi Quatro, Michael Ball, Englebert Humperdink and Cerys Matthews.
The programme also spoke with those who worked with Elvis, from songwriters to backing singers and session musicians, plus a special interview with Priscilla Presley. Mick Jagger also confirms New Elvis Movie: The legendary Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger has opened up about his desire to move from music to movies and also confirms his producer involvement with the new Elvis bio-pic. The iconic musician, 70, is currently tracking the lives of other famous movers - producing the James Brown biopic 'Get On Up' followed by the new Elvis Presley biopic 'Last Train to Memphis'.
The rock star told the Hollywood Reporter he can't get no satisfaction from writing his memoirs, and preferred to take on new projects instead.
Sir Mick said: "I think the rock 'n' roll memoir is a glutted market. I'd rather be doing something new. I'd rather be making new films, making new music, be touring. If someone wants to know what I did in 1965, they can look it up on Wikipedia without even spending any money."
Author Peter Guralnick confirmed the new Elvis Movie of his book to EIN last week. (See story below)

Tempest Storm - New Autobiography?: EIN recently posted a story that Tempest Storm the Queen of burlesque, who once dated Elvis and whose breasts are insured for $1million, at 85 is writing her autobiography. (see story below)
The pensioner, who claims to have had flings with Elvis Presley and President JFK during more than 60 years as a performer, still pulls in a huge crowd every time she performs.
However given the fact that she released her (very interesting) autobiography in 1987 (when she was 59 years old) EIN wonders how much new material she has to talk about. Could this new book be a reissue or revised edition perhaps?

Elvis' Attorney Ed Hookstratten Dies: Ed Hookstratten, powerful Attorney to Elvis, Johnny Carson and Vin Scully, has died at 83. He passed away Wednesday of complications from congestive heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills. Hookstratten was a powerful and iconic force in sports, entertainment and broadcast news while representing Carson, Elvis Presley, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin of "Laugh-In" fame. His news clients included Tom Brokaw, Bryant Gumbel, Jessica Savitch, and Tom Snyder.
Being Elvis' attorney Hookstratten along with PI John O'Grady worked together during Elvis famous 1971 paternity case as well as 1973's attempt to reduce Elvis' drug dependency. According to Guralnick Elvis even passed out in Hookstratten's offices one time. He also was involved in try to stop the book 'Elvis:What Happened?' being published.
Hookstratten had a reputation for getting his star clients innovative, lucrative and unprecedented deals.
Hookstratten is mentioned in movie producer Robert Evans' book "The Kid Stays In the Picture", Hookstratten was also the namesake of the "Lt. Bob Hookstratten" character in Rob Reiner's rock music mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap."

"Elvis - A legend in the making" - The Canberra Exhibition: If anyone can claim to be an Elvis Presley aficionado, it must be Warren Perry.
A native, like Presley, of Memphis, Tennessee, he grew up with an appreciation of the local music scene and its place in American popular culture.
But even he was surprised when he first saw the collection of images of 21-year-old Presley that now form a major exhibition showing at Australia's National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
Mr Perry, a writer and researcher from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, is in Canberra this month to take in the Australian version of the touring show. Mr Perry said when he first saw the collection, he was stunned.
''I saw the contact sheets and I couldn't believe there was such a body of work with which I was unfamiliar,'' he said.
''I'm not trying to be vain about it, but coming out of Memphis, Tennessee, you see a lot of pictures of Elvis, and I had never seen probably 95 per cent of the work that had been shot.'' |

He and his colleagues at the gallery in Washington worked with Alfred Wertheimer to put together the show, beginning in 2008.
It opened in Los Angeles in January 2010, on what would have been Presley's 75th birthday.
The evocative black and white images of the fresh-faced 21-year-old are also a refreshingly wholesome take on a man who would go on to succumb to the effects of stardom, cultivating a lifestyle that would eventually kill him young.
''The worst things he's putting into his body in any of these photos is a glass of milk, so you see that and you know there's that other thing at the end of 21 years,'' he says.
''There's Elvis succumbing to the rock'n'roll generation's habits that are the products of the generation he created, which is horrible. The sponsor of this movement succumbs to the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll itself. Like I said, it was a hell of a ride.''
Warren Perry, writer and researcher and co-curator of Elvis at 21 will be speaking at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra on Wednesday January 29 at 12.30pm.

Peter Guralnick confirms new Elvis Movie: EIN's LA roving reporter Joan Gansky was at the recent Grammy Museum lecture with Peter Guralnick.
She reports that Guralnick was an excellent speaker - and talked about many of the famous people in the music industry he has met - some of whom he has also written books about. He is so down to earth and so passionate and knowledgeable on his subject: MUSIC!
It was interesting that when he took questions from the audience, they all seemed to be about Elvis! He mentioned he was working on a new book about Sam Phillips, due for release next year.
Afterwards I asked him what was happening about the rumored movie of his Last Train to Memphis book. Guralnick smiled and assured me that everything was on schedule and moving right along! Lisa Marie has also noted that the new movie was in pre-production.
The director is Kevin MacDonald who also directed The Last King of Scotland and Touching the Void.

Lisa Marie Presley in bad health?: The US tabloids are all a-buzz with Lisa Marie facing some major health issues as she suffers from ongoing acute throat problems.
“Lisa Marie has suffered from acute throat problems for at least 10 years, and they only seem to be getting worse. In the past, her throat acted up only when she was touring or working extra hard in the studio. But now, it seems that the day-to-day stress of family life coupled with traveling is making the problem a lot worse.”
Lisa launched a demanding tour in August. And throat issues nearly forced her to cancel her Nov. 23 show in Cranston, R.I., said the source.
“What’s remarkable is that that she feels the need to continue her singing career even though she could put her feet up for the rest of her life.
“She’s worth $300 million, yet she travels long hours to tiny clubs. Her husband Michael supports Lisa Marie as long as she wants to pursue her musical dream, and he keeps an eye on her constantly.
“Lisa Marie is dismissing her throat problems as overstressed vocal cords, but her friends fear there’s something more serious. The pressures involved in balancing her career and family are affecting her health!”

'Endless Summer Festival' New Import CD: Out soon is the new Straight Arrow double-digipak CD release 'Endless Summer Festival', featuring the August 22, 1973 Dinner & Midnight performances. Both shows are taken from original "booth recordings" taped by the same person. The sound quality is far superior to the usual audience recordings. The year's journey from Hawaii to Nevada was almost at its end on August 22, 1973. That Wednesday night, Elvis delivered two professional, sold-out performances for the faithful at the Las Vegas Hilton with a mix of the old and new, including a stunning, yet-to-be recorded cover of Richard Harris' 1971 single "My Boy." After the final Hilton show on September 3, bass player Emory Gordy would leave to return to the more creative studio environs of Nashville, Presley would fire Col Parker, Priscilla would leave for good, and Elvis himself would nearly leave the land of the living. It was a long, long way down from that worldwide broadcast in Honolulu on January 14, but the man would survive, somehow, and return to sing his soul that December in Memphis.

"ELVIS LIVES" EPE Tribute Artist show Touring the US: Travelling the US and performing in Houston this weekend Elvis Lives is a big hit with the fans.
Dean Z, the newly crowned 2013 winner of the EPE Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest has joined the touring cast of ELVIS LIVES for the winter 2014 engagements.
ELVIS LIVES is an unforgettable multi-media and live musical journey across Elvis' life featuring finalists from EPE's annual worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, each representing Elvis during four eras of his career: the 1950s, 1960s, his movie career and his concert years. This season marks the fourth U.S. tour for ELVIS LIVES.
For Houston performances, the Elvis Tribute Artists will be comprised of Bill Cherry (first place, 2009), Leo Days (finalist, 2009) and the newly crowned 2013 winner Dean Z. They will be joined by a live band, back-up singers, an Ann Margret performer, as well as iconic media and imagery made available from the Graceland archives.
This event also includes a never-before-seen exhibit of life-size images of Elvis' stage-wear that will be on display in the lobby for both performances.
‘Elvis Lives’ is touring the US from Houston tonight through to Dick Clarks American Band Stand Theater in Branson, MO at the end of February.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 6' Review: The December Issue of the Elvis Files magazine sadly got stuck in the Christmas
post but what a treat it is! Once again featuring Elvis stories and new
unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
The key article in the magazine is a stunning 20-page feature on Elvis’ last concerts of the fifties in Honolulu, Hawaii. Written by Elvis expert James Roy I found it the most interesting and well-researched story published by the Elvis Files Magazine so far.
In another feature Lorentzen has also discovered seventeen fabulous new photos of Elvis in Jacksonville Florida from February 1956, showing Elvis and the Colonel hanging out and making surreptitious arrangements at the hotel.

New Legacy Release for 2014: Elvis 'Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis' celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the King's triumphant 1974 return to his hometown with an expanded 2CD release of the monumental concert experience.

This 2CD Legacy Edition will be released on March 18, 2014 and features several tracks left off the original '74 vinyl release in addition to a wealth of unreleased material.
Disc 2 of the remastered edition presents a recently located MONO recording of a "test run" performance held for an ecstatic live audience on March 18, 1974, at the Richmond Coliseum two days before his historic return to Memphis.

There is three minutes of stunning footage including live concert action - as well as Elvis backstage kissing the girls, greeting his fans and signing autographs.

Elvis' Personal Record Collection: In response to a recent Marty Lacker question, EIN has updated its spotlight on 'The secrets of Elvis' record collection'.
Way back in 2004 Britain's excellent Record Collector magazine featured a very interesting article about what was in Elvis' personal record collection when they examined the list EPE supplied of over 1000 albums and singles. It provided a great insight into Elvis' eclectic musical interests with many titles sure to surprise fans. The artists featured are a wide variety of names well known to fans and many artists fans will not have heard of before.
