Published December 2013, issue 6 of The Elvis Files Magazine.
Somewhat unfortunately Issue #6, the December release of the Elvis files
magazine got stuck in the Christmas post, only arriving in Australia last week
(along with my December FTD releases!)
But what a great belated Christmas treat this is, packed with truly interesting articles and unpublished photos.
As Erik Lorentzen notes in his introduction, he is always on the hunt for unseen photographs of Elvis and in this issue he really thinks there are lots to savour. And he is right!
This magazine series is about newly discovered unpublished photographs of Elvis along with articles that some reason or another missed publication in Erik Lorentzen’s Elvis Files series of books.
The magazine starts with a feature on unpublished photographs from ‘Love Me Tender’ showing a deleted scene where Elvis’ character Clint Reno attacks his wife Cathy. These are quite a revelation from an extra unknown scene that would have been in the original end of the film.
The key article in the magazine however is a stunning 20-page feature on Elvis’ last concerts of the fifties in Honolulu, Hawaii. Written by knowledgeable archivist for Scotty Moore James Roy (ScottyMoore.Net) I found it the most interesting and well-researched story published by the Elvis Files Magazine so far.
James Roy has discovered some fascinating new articles from the local papers at the time, as well as providing a very interesting overview of Hawaii and what Honolulu would have been like back in 1957.
It certainly wasn’t the touristy state we know from nowadays and seeing Elvis perform there as a local must have been a stunning eye-opener. The lengthy article includes...
.... "About 15,000 Honolulans spent $32,000 yesterday to see for themselves just what sort of entertainer sparks the Presley cult. On the plus side of the ledger is the fact that the hula-hipped, crazy-legged Elvis is a versatile singer.
Elvis is America's top money entertainer and, more significantly, tradesters predict he'll be around for several years to come. Once his fanatical folllowing abates, Presley can emerge as a mighty competent "straight" singer. On the negative side is the fact that Americas two-legged answer to the Sputnik violates every rule in the book when it comes to showmanship. Right now - obviously - that doesn't matter. It there ever were a "pre-sold" attraction, Elvis is it. He could do no wrong as far as last nights shrieking, beat-clapping enthusiasts were concerned.
Elvis scratched his ear--and squeals of joy echoed through the uninhabited audience that jam-packed the makai side of Honolulu Stadium. He shrugged a shoulder of his sparkling metallic-threaded jacket—and the girls literally bounced up and down in their seats. The king can do no wrong. And Elvis, make no mistake, IS the king of the teen-agers who snap up each of his recordings by the millions and who sacrifice lunch money so they can buy a ticket to see him. Elvis, it appears, enjoys this mass hero worship. Indeed there are times when you wonder how he can keep a straight face as he watches his audience.
Presley had 'em rockin' if not always rollin' to the tempos of many of his best-known songs. Matter of fact, he was on stage for about 40 minutes, accompanied by his own trio and the Jordanaires quartet. Surprisingly, he spent more time at the piano than he did with his guitar."
Some fabulous new full-page classic Elvis in action photos - and what is it with Elvis’ face rash in the colour photos – sure looks like pineapple allergy to me.
While the excellent 'Elvis Files book 1957- 1959' did include several pages about these concerts, here Eric Lorentzen supplies so many unseen and new photographs that the article really helps capture the feel of this special Elvis week in Hawaii.
In another feature Lorentzen has also discovered some fabulous new photos of Elvis in Jacksonville Florida from February 1956, showing Elvis and the Colonel hanging out and making surreptitious arrangements at the hotel.
(Right: Just four of the seventeen newly discovered Jacksonville 1956 photos featured in the magazine!)

Other features include a few pages on Dolores Hart with a delightful article on director Hal Kanter gently coaching Elvis and her on the kissing scene from ‘Loving You.’
Another article features Elvis’ and Danny Thomas’ complete interview from the charity presentation of FDR’s ‘Potomac’ yacht. Again this is a very expanded version from the couple of pages in the very first Elvis Files 1960-64 book with lots of unseen full-page images of Elvis. Some with him looking surprisingly chubby in 1964.
In this fabulous full-page quality candid from April 1969 you can see every detail - including Elvis' chewed finger nails - (sorry it is scanned low-res here!)
Once again Elaine Christan, daughter of super-fan Virginia Coons, supplies an exclusive article ‘Spring of 69’ looking at the times they spent as fans outside Elvis Beverly Hills house. It’s an interesting but perhaps obvious revelation that by 1969 Elvis’ popularity is once again going crazy after the Comeback Special and it was no longer easy to meet Elvis outside his house and make any personal contact.
Her story includes...
... A friend asked Elvis to sign an album for her, and told him that it had U.S. Male, in stereo. He looked at her, grinned and said, "Honey, how do you get a US male in stereo?" !
In one photo Elvis has his hand on my 10-year-old sister Nancy's shoulder. He really liked kids. He would ruffle her hair on the nights she got to stand next to him.
I was shocked when one of my photos of Elvis holding a baby up in the air was sold by someone to one of the rag-sheets (I believe it was the Enquirer). Anyway the caption said it was Elvis outside Graceland holding up Lisa Marie for his fans.
It made me mad that someone got good money for my photo.
Mom had passed a large portrait of Elvis through to get it signed and she almost didn't get it back! After Elvis signed the portrait he passed it back and someone grabbed it before Mom could reach it! Another fan wrestled the photo back for Mom but it had been on a cardboard backing and the fight over it caused it to come off the backing and the photo got bent and wrinkled. The crowd was terrible! They had fought for this signed photo like the way you would later see them fight for scarves in Las Vegas!
Elvis didn't stop much for the fans outside after this time anyway, not like in the days before the 'Comeback'.

There is also a very cute little article by Elaine Christan called ‘Cracking up in Anaheim’ which captures the fun of an over-keen fan who managed to jump security and grab onto Elvis, holding him by his hair as security tried to remove her. (see a couple of photos below)
... After singing "Fever" Elvis chatted with the audience a little as fans handed him a few things from the front of the stage. His bodyguards were focused on these fans rushing to the stage so no one noticed a woman jump down from the balcony onto the back of the stage and run into Elvis - with a lot of force! Dick Grob rushed to pull her off, which was a difficult task as she now had both of her hands in Elvis' hair....
There are still plenty of other articles I haven’t even mentioned such as...
- Raquel Welsh – ‘This Must be What Sex Is All About’
- Schoolteacher who Knew Elvis says ‘It’s a Miracle He Is A Star’
- Jodie Tatum, the blonde Hillbilly
- The World of Elvis Jumpsuits ‘Indian Feather’
Overall Verdict: Once again the Elvis Files Magazine supplies exactly what they promised at the start, new articles, fascinating reading and unpublished photographs that have been recently found or for some reason did not fit into the original Elvis Files books
For me this issue was a real Christmas cracker!
Please note that all photos in this article are very low-res scans and do not represent the image quality of the magazine.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 3' - Review: Released March 2013, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
The real score here is of course that Erik Lorentzen has managed to get hold of Frank Powolny’s 1956 September photographs - and there are plenty here over twenty good size shots - and in great quality too.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- A look at Elvis and Mary Ann Mobley
- Rare photos from 'Follow That Dream'.
- Personal fan stories of meeting Elvis
- Elvis Gospel in his 68 Maroon suit
- Ann-Margret: The Girlfriend Who Isn’t One.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine Issue 2' - Review: Released last month, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
I have seen little about this December magazine publication elsewhere on the Internet and yet I found it another excellent magazine, and for me even more interesting than the first issue.
The real treat here is Lorentzen’s personal story of meeting Elvis and visiting Graceland, as well as lots of exclusive on-stage photos taken during that 1975 tour by the Norwegian fan club.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis and The Martial Arts – by Master Kang Ree.
- "The World of Elvis Jumpsuits" – Featuring the unusual Black PasSaRyu Karate jacket from August/ September 1974.
- Elvis and The DIG magazine. Four great pages of candids from April 1956
- A rare Elvis Interview from 1964.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.
