'Elvis, That's The Way It Is' - Live In Memphis AUGUST 13: The highlight of Elvis Week 2011 is "Elvis Presley LIVE - The King in Concert" at 8:00 p.m. at The Orpheum, 203 South Main Street, Memphis. "Elvis Presley Live: The King in Concert" is a multi-media music event that puts a hot studio session band and back up vocalists on stage in Memphis as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is projected, larger than life, on state-of-the-art LED screens. Hosted by Joe Guercio, Elvis' musical conductor and close friend for many years, this is a rare opportunity to experience an Elvis concert in Memphis, the city known around the world as the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll. This is a virtual Elvis Presley concert - with Elvis singing lead vocals - presented exactly like one of his classic live performances at the Las Vegas Hilton showroom. All the sound, other than Elvis' signature vocals, have been pulled out of his best concert performances in the epic film "Elvis: That's the Way It Is.” All musical accompaniments in this concert are performed live except for Elvis' voice. The contemporary staging and overall production help create the illusion that Elvis is on stage. Also making a special appearance during this evening will be Elvis’ Imperials, singing a few of Elvis' favorite gospel numbers. Saturday, August 13th is truly a night with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll that you’ll want to experience in Memphis with your friends, family and fans from around the world during Elvis Week 2011.
Tickets to the event are $45.00 or $89.00 for VIP ticket which includes VIP seating plus access to an Elvis Presley LIVE Post-Party and collectible event lanyard/badge.

Bruce Jackson Memorial Service in Sydney: There was a Bruce Jackson Memorial Service at the Sydney Opera House Friday, February 25, EIN contributor Geoffrey McDonnell was there and conveyed the emotion of the event.
Bruce Jackson - "Bruce the Goose" as Elvis called him - was one of the legends of the live sound business in both Australia and worldwide - he worked for Elvis for six years.
Bruce Jackson initial start was creating one of the largest audio businesses in Australia before moving to the USA and becoming the Sound Engineer for Elvis Presley. He started to work for Elvis in 1971 when he was only in his early twenties continuing through to Elvis’ final concert.
Towards the very end of Elvis’ last ever concert on June 26th 1977, Elvis thanked Bruce personally, 'I would like to thank my sound engineer Bruce Jackson from Australia'…
The Bruce Jackson Memorial Service was a 90 minute memorial service. It was extremely moving and when heavy weights like Roy Claire made speeches you just knew the significance of the man!
Bruce Springstein made a nice video presentation and so did 'U2' and I remember particularly the excellent speech by his nephew, daughters & Opera House sound man as being phenomenal.
|
|
The memorial featured a string orchestra classical piece heard via a Bruce Jackson installed sound system the sound was superb. Of course the Bruce "Elvis Birthday greetings" from June 3rd 1976 were heard too.
Around 500 people attended and drinks were served in a bar after the service ended at 12 noon.
From the many, MANY presentations made at the Opera House during the service there is no doubt that Bruce Jackson really was unique in the sound industry and tremendously innovative in his field.
It is a very sad loss for everyone.

Elvis' Police Badges - Police Chief Shares Department Tales: Mark Erickson divulges how a Morton Grove Police badge ended up in the hands of Elvis Presley.
A Morton Grove Police badge from the estate of Elvis Presley recently turned up on eBay.
The king of rock and roll often made friends with police officers while touring the country. When making stops in various cities he would befriend local officers and for whatever reason, Presley began collecting police badges. Many of the badges he acquired throughout the years are on display at Graceland, the late entertainer’s home, which is now a museum.
When Police Chief Mark Erickson learned about the badge on eBay he picked up the phone and called the officer who used to wear the now famous badge.
"Am I in trouble?" The now retiree asked.
Of course he wasn't but since the badge had been gifted to Presley more than 35 years ago, federal laws have since changed. And, these new laws prohibit the transfer or sale of genuine police badges.
That's just one of the many stories Erickson divulged to a crowd of listeners at a recent library event. The informal conversation at the library was a way for residents see to a different side of the police department.
Erickson joined the Morton Grove Police Department 28 years ago as a patrolman. During his career he worked in crime prevention and as a D.A.R.E. officer., and later appointed to police chief in 2009.

- Burst Of Fire -
As recorded live in Las Vegas, NV, at the Hilton Hotel Showroom, August 25th, 1973 Dinner show.
The first CD is called "BURST OF FIRE" (CD MR 2060-2) and is a solid Las Vegas show with a strong setlist. Among the highlights are "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Release Me" and "An American Trilogy". Lisa Marie was in the audience and Elvis sings "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for her.
This recording was taken from a 1st generation copy of the original audience recorded tape. For the majority of collectors this will be a new, previously unknown show, coming from a recently found cassette! The CD booklet will contain a collection of August/September 1973 photos and liner notes.

As recorded live in St. Petersburg, FL, at the Bayfront Center, September 3rd, 1976.
The second CD is titled "ELVIS AT BAY" (CD MR 2061-2) and dates from a rather uneven Elvis tour. Nevertheless, the last few shows were of a solid standard, compared with the first ones in Houston, San Antonio & Macon. The Bayfront Center performance is one of finest shows of the tour. Elvis is focused, his voice is strong, he’s giving good versions of songs like "And I Love You So", "America", "Polk Salad Annie" & "Hurt". He is also in an exceptionally good mood, joking with Charlie ("I guess they understand how lonely Charlie's been...") and with the audience ("What do you think? I'm the Pope and I'm gonna bless you? No way.")
This recording was taken directly from the original tape obtained from the person who recorded the show. His own memories of the show are presented inside the booklet. All accompanying photographs were taken in St. Petersburg, September 3, 1976.

Texas Monthly recalls Buddy Holly opening for Elvis in February 1955: The March 2011 issue of Texas Monthly, due at news stands on March 3, will celebrate Texas' 175th anniversary of independence by listing 175 of the most notable places and moments in the state's history.
And look for #128 out of those 175 to refer to Lubbock, or rather specifically to Feb. 13, 1955, in Lubbock -- when Buddy Holly opened for Elvis Presley at the Fair Park Coliseum, 1012 Ave. A in Lubbock.
Texas Monthly writes: "The ads that circulated around town proclaimed 'The Be-Bop Western Star of the Louisiana Hayride Returns to Lubbock.' |
|
Elvis, just twenty years old and eleven months away from stardom, would be paid $75 for a four o'clock performance at the Fair Park Coliseum, which had opened just the year before. But the rest of the bill was not to be overlooked, including a senior at Lubbock High School named Buddy Holly, who performed with his friend Bob Montgomery. They had played parties and church events and on local radio, but this show was different. With the crowds and the venue and the stage, it had the feel of the big time. Indeed, Holly would open for Elvis twice more that year at the coliseum, which still hosts events. These performances would lead to a meeting with Eddy Crandall, the manager of Marty Robbins, who would introduce Holly to the execs at Decca Records."

Colonel Parker's Elvis hoard - Marty Lacker comments:
>> Reading your story (see below) and watching the short video pertaining to all the things Parker had in his Madison office squirreled away unbeknownst to Elvis, made me even detest the carny con man even more. In my opinion, all of those things pertaining to Elvis should have been in Elvis' possession at Graceland or at least a copy of them for his enjoyment and memories. Those are things that Elvis generated not Parker and truth be told, Parker probably charged those things to Elvis as expenses through the years Elvis was alive. EPE should never have had to pay for them after Elvis died and the courts got rid of Parker. Lisa Marie really owes Blanchard Tual, the Memphis court appointed attorney who became her Guardian Ad Litem for uncovering all of Parker's terrible actions in all those years with his side deals and other actions.
I wholeheartedly agree with Dave Marsh and could add much more to it. More and more I think things should be exposed that this con man got away with. - Marty Lacker

More on Glee and Elvis Presley's US Chart record:
EIN reader Don has sent us another noteworthy comment >> The only reason anybody came close to ELVIS' chart records (ex. Mariah Carey, Madonna, Jay-Z, "GLEE", etc.) was because Billboard manipulated their charts in the early 1990s to reflect lagging sales of new music. Despite easy access to downloading on the internet the music industry has never recovered and continues to loose sales every year. Music insiders blame illegal downloading but the truth is, illegal bootlegging existed in the pre-download era, yet the industry thrived. Another hole in that theory is, in the early 1990s when the industry had it's first huge drop in sales there was no downloading, illegal or otherwise. The fair thing to do would be to look at ELVIS' worldwide chart success. At last count ELVIS has amassed over 70 number one hits and over 30 number one albums. "GLEE" has only charted 2 top tens by comparison. Also, people continue to visit Graceland 34 years after "THE KING'S" death. "GLEE" might be around at the 10 year mark, but 34 years? It will never happen, not with today's youths short attention span which gets shorter and shorter by the year. Currently, over 120 countries have licenses with E.P.E. to sell ELVIS merchandise and sales continue to grow every year. Another thing to think about is Billboard's and Pop radio's continuing mistreatment of ELVIS in the current payola era on radio. They still have yet to acknowledge the fact that ELVIS charted 6 number one Extended Play albums in the 1950s, two of which topped the charts for close to 30 weeks (JAILHOUSE ROCK, 28 WEEKS and KING CREOLE volume 1, 29 weeks). |
|
Another fact Billboard refuses to recognise is that ELVIS passed the Beatles in number one hits on their singles sales chart in 2004 when the rerelease of "THAT'S ALRIGHT" added to ELVIS' lead in top ten hits. Before Billboard yet again manipulated their charts ELVIS gained a further 5 top ten hits, 4 of which topped the Billboard singles sales chart at number 1 ("IF I CAN DREAM", 2001; "A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION", 2002; "RUBBERNECKING", 2003; "THAT'S ALRIGHT", 2004; and "HEARTBREAK HOTEL", 2006). "IF I CAN DREAM" was rereleased after 911 with no promotion and still reached number 6 on Billboard's singles sales chart. No doubt it would have also topped the charts had it been given proper promotion and success was based on sales, not payola. Another example of ELVIS' mistreatment by the music industry is their continuing insistence that Michael Jackson is the equal to the real "KING OF MUSIC", ELVIS. We wouldn't even be talking about that except for a couple of very important facts, the "THRILLER" video and the fact that Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in 1993. The "THRILLER" video was crucial to the album's success. In the 1980s image and marketing became more important to a song's popularity than the song itself. - Don.

'Bringing It All Back Home' CD/Book Review: From Venus productions last year, a double CD/Book set of Elvis performing in Memphis. The first CD contains the matinée performance of March 16, 1974, his first live appearance in his hometown since 1961. The second CD features the only performance by Elvis at the Mid-South Coliseum on June 10th 1975. Both concerts are still NOT officially released and Venus have created a high-quality production with a delightful 132 page book full of great photographs and text. The notes say that the source used was the "first generation soundboard tapes" and it sure sounds like it! Both concerts are in great quality and deserve to be released by FTD!
As we head into 2011 EIN looks back to check out a few favourite releases from last year.

Colonel Tom Parker, his collection in Madison: Like him or not, Colonel Tom Parker kept very well organized files on everything Elvis. Back in 1983 Parker was forced to sell his assets to EPE and to drop any claims he had to Elvis' estate after Lisa Marie's representatives filed allegations in court against The Colonel for mismanagement. It is quite unbelievable how Parker kept so much stuff during Elvis' life and which finally helped him make that special deal with EPE.
CLICK HERE to see in this rare video Parkers store of movie reels, promos, documents etc. Why Graceland keep fans from seeing so much of this unreleased material is beyond belief.
Enjoy this amazing video and hear for yourself how hard Tom Parker worked for Elvis as a manager!.
Critic Dave Marsh delivered one of the most damning assessments of Colonel Parker when he said, "Parker was the most overrated person in the history of show-business. The Colonel went to his grave believing he had pulled off some carny trick, when what he had actually done was sell genius short for 23 years."

Has Glee really Beaten Elvis Presley's Chart record?: Media stories abound this week that Elvis' US Chart record may be no more as the TV series "Glee" has taken over the record for the 'Most charted songs' in the Billboard lists 52 year archives. Glee has six debuts on the Hot 100 to be released today on Billboard.com. The Glee cast has placed 113 songs on the chart, besting the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley who has 108 chart entries logged since the survey’s inception in 1958 and 2003. A remake of Kary Perry’s recent Hot 100 No.1 hit ‘Firework’ represents the Glee casts highest debuting title this week.
EIN contributor Brian Quinn however points out how ludicrous this story is.
While "Glee" passes the King this week for most Hot 100 appearances, it's certainly not too early to consider how much more history the cast can write.
|
|
It does seem like a safe bet that the "Glee" cast will hold the record for most Hot 100 hits for a very long time. It's hard to imagine another type of act that could boast the cache/marketing push/multi-media platform to release multiple songs week after week and enjoy enough consumer support to send them onto the Hot 100.
By spring 2012 it is possible that the "Glee" cast, if it maintains its release schedule and popularity, could count approximately 250 Hot 100 chart hits.
With Presley at 108 and no other artist in triple digits, no artist we now know of seems in the running to top the troupe's Hot 100 record.
BUT just as the digital era has revolutionized the way consumers can purchase music so cheaply and instantaneously, we don't know what future means of music delivery could affect chart performance many years from now.
It's also worth placing the cast's latest achievement in a broader historical chart context.
While the ensemble's feat is unquestionably impressive, a few facts in Presley's favor:
The King's career predates the Hot 100's Aug. 4, 1958, launch. Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles" book counts 31 Presley songs that reached various Hot 100 predecessor charts beginning in 1956.
So, in terms of overall Billboard chart hits, Presley's total could stand at an unofficial 139 when combining multiple song surveys.
Further breaking down the "Glee" cast's Hot 100 resume, of its 113 Hot 100 entries, just two have hit the top 10: "Don't Stop Believin' " (No. 4) and "Teenage Dream" (No. 8). 36 of the 113 have reached the top 40.
Conversely, with 80 top 40 Hot 100 hits - 25 of which reached the top 10 - Presley is far and away the leader. Elton John ranks second with 57 top 40 titles, followed by the Beatles (50). 36 top 40 entries places the "Glee" cast in a tie with R. Kelly for 15th place.
And, of course, Presley introduced a bounty of classics to mainstream audiences, while the "Glee" cast has so far charted solely remakes (a streak that could end in upcoming weeks with the show's rumored promise of original songs).
Ultimately, the "Glee" cast's passing of Presley in one of the Hot 100 100's most sacred categories is laudable.
It's only one statistic, however, when examining the artists who have made some of the most memorable impacts in Hot 100 history.
Further more the US population is now double what it was in 1955 and the media focussed on the massed spending power of TV watching children.
In the end, there is no comparison....Elvis is The King for a reason....
(News, Source;Billboard/ChartBeat-Gary Trust/BrianQuinn/ElvisInfoNet) |
Marty Lacker also Comments on the Glee chart story:
Marty Lacker... "The comparison of Glee and Elvis on Billboard's Hot 100 is ridiculous and it is like comparing apples to oranges.
Elvis is a recording artist,Glee is a TV Show. Technology back then is nothing what it is today where not only can they download the music from the internet, many kids do it directly to their cell phones.
They also don't mention the fact of Elvis' number one records and many of them in the early years were at #1 across the board, pop, Black Music and Country charts. Not to mention that Elvis changed the culture of the world in the 50's as well as being a cultural historical icon.
In another few years,if not sooner, Glee will be forgotten as just another TV show that faded out and was cancelled.
All this hoopla was to get publicity for Billboard and Glee."

'Last Train To Memphis' The Movie: EIN's friends at Elvis Express have annouced the good news that 'Young Guns' writer John Fusco has been hired to tell the story of the King in a new movie based on Elvis' stunning early years. Fusco is adapting the critically acclaimed book written by Peter Guralnick, 'Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley'.
The story will focus on Elvis’s formative years up until he entered the Army in 1958.
Fox has been trying to pull together a movie based on the book for more than a decade. But now things look like they are coming together as Steve Bing is producing the film now for Fox 2000.

THE NIGHT and with the unusual conclusion with Bridge Over Troubled Water. (EIN does not believe this comment).
The Other Two Shows are from August 26 and 27 midnight Shows in spite Elvis' starting to tire from both seasons. They are still solid with a superb audio, overall in the August 27. He sound terrific full of vocal energy with a tape with a full sharp sound that give justice to the listener. No surprises on the track list but all the songs are delivered with energy and solid enthusiasm. All tracks were digitally restored for your best possible listening pleasure; the sound quality is incredibly good considering the early period. We are proud to give life to a unique view with almost 120 minutes of great music with Elvis at his best.
Deluxe box contains a collection of live RARE photographs of both the Seasons. Don't miss it.
Note - EIN believes this concert to come from a CDR that has been around in collector's hands for a while. The 'Bridge' ending on the CDR is also a fake edit.

'Elvis and Ali' their story in photos: Two of the US’s most well-known icons - “the King of Rock ’n’ Roll” and “the Greatest” - meet at the James A. Michener Art Museum beginning this Saturday and running through May 15. They will be spotlighted in “Ali and Elvis: American Icons,” featuring two photography exhibitions: the Smithsonian’s “Elvis at 21” and art2art’s “Muhammad Ali: The Making of an Icon.”
With “Elvis at 21” freelance photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer was hired by RCA Victor in 1956 to shoot promotional images of recently signed 21-year-old recording artist Elvis Presley. Wertheimer’s instincts were to “tag along” with the artist after the assignment and the resulting images provide us with a look at Elvis before he exploded onto the scene and became one of the most exciting performers of his time.
Wertheimer had unparalleled access and documented Elvis on the road, backstage, in concert, in the recording studio and at home in Memphis, Tenn. “Colonel” Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, restricted contact just a short time later. |
|
“Muhammad Ali: The Making of an Icon” chronicles the life and times of the now-iconic figure who was simultaneously the most beloved and most reviled man in boxing and who still engenders a strong emotional response from people almost 50 years after his initial rise to public prominence. The exhibit, organized by art2art, provides a glimpse of rarely seen moments of his personal life as well as more famous episodes from his career. These images not only illustrate the enormous changes that he went through — from a patriotic Olympic champion to a draft-resisting member of the Nation of Islam to a figure of racial reconciliation — but also show that Ali’s gregarious, funny and likable personality remained intact even as a super-charged political atmosphere swirled around him.
Ali’s story is one of an American hero who has come full circle in the hearts and minds of people throughout the world, and features more than 50 photographs by such distinguished photographers as Annie Leibovitz, Gordon Parks and Art Shay that capture Ali’s positive public image.

More Photos & Footage 0f Elvis Rocking NYC 2011! AS reported below by Elvis author and super-fan Megan Murphy
>>> There is nothing like seeing Elvis The Concert in NYC. New Yorkers ( and east coast people in general) are very passionate people. So to see so many different generations of locals cheering, standing, smiling and singing along through the show was a proud moment for me. Many times during the show, the crowd cheered, sang along and got up off their feet. Even a few standing ovations.
How Great Thou Art was a crowd favorite as was Polk Salad, The Wonder Of You and most of all American Trilogy (and that is no doubt because NYers Never Forget 9-11).
By the end of the show, the entire audience was on their toes. It was an incredible night.
Elvis Presley Rocked The Big Apple Tonight...and I hope Elvis rocks the USA with more tour dates soon!

New Elvis Billboards on Mid-South US Roads: Billboards for the 2011 Graceland tourism campaign are making their debut on highways and interstates around the Mid-South. The billboards feature black and white headshots of Elvis Presley against a bright contemporary color palette.
Both the images and headlines are a subtle nod to the 55th anniversary of the year 1956 in Elvis' life. During that groundbreaking year, Elvis enjoyed his first RCA single and national hit, "Heartbreak Hotel," his first album, "Elvis Presley," his first movie, "Love Me Tender," and his first television appearances on The Dorsey Brothers' "Stage Show," "The Milton Berle Show," "The Steve Allen Show" and "Ed Sullivan.
Look for these new billboards on I-55, I-40, I-30 and other major roadways in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri!

'Elvis is Back!' 2-CD Legacy Edition Delayed: The release date for Elvis Is Back! 2-CD Legacy Edition has been delayed one week. The new release date is March 8. A half-century later, "Elvis Is Back" is now coupled with 1961’s "Something For Everybody," an album he recorded back in Nashville one year later. Elvis Rocked the Big Apple Last Night! Elvis author and super-fan Megan Murphy reported on the 'Elvis In Concert in New York. Cissy Houston was in the audience.
The crowd also seemed to take a shining to James Burton, often times when he would be playing the crowd would cheer James. And you could see it touched James.
How Great Thou Art was a crowd favorite as was Polk Salad, The Wonder Of You and most of all American Trilogy (and that is no doubt because NYers Never Forget 9-11).
During intermission, the merchandise stand was packed and many items totally sold out. People were in the lobby talking about the show with such excitement. It was an amazing energy here tonight. I wished it could have lasted many more hours. It was what we Elvis fans live for.
When the show came back on, The Sweets took center stage and Estelle dedicated Sweet Inspiration to Sylvia and Myrna who we lost in 2010. Estelle then introduced Cissy Houston (original Sweets member and mother of Whitney Houston) who was in the audience. It was great that Cissy was there. Too bad she didn't jump up on stage with the girls.
By the end of the show, the entire audience was on their toes. It was an incredible night.

'Elvis In Concert' - Mohegan Sun Arena Review: According fans who attended the Mohegan Sun Concert this weekend there wasn't a jumpsuited Elvis fan in sight! The Arena looked pretty full - and other reports indicated a sell-out. There was unfortunately no new content however and the clever "Google Earth" intro was not used.
Fans report that the volume as always could have been louder and should have been clearer too.
Fans who had never seen the large-screen Elvis show before were totally impressed, while fans who have seen it previously say it needs a complete overhaul to increase the impact and excitement of the concert. It comes to Europe in 2012.
New Line-Up: James Burton - Lead Guitar, Glen Hardin - Piano, Paul Leim - Drums, Nathan East - Bass.
Sweet Inspirations -Estelle Brown, Portia Griffin, Unknown Female
Terry Blackwood, Joe Moscheo, Joe Guercio - Musical Director
16 Piece Orchestra
Estelle gave a brief tribute to Myrna saying that The Sweets will continue until "God tells us when to stop".

'An Afternoon In The Garden' back in Billboard Charts! The album 'An Afternoon In The Garden' has suddenly turned up on the Billboard Top 200 and Catalog Charts. Last week it entered the Top 200 Album Charts at 166 and 20 on the Catalog Charts. This week it has risen to 137 on the Top 200 Album Charts and 16 on the Catalog Album Charts.
EIN contributor Brian Quinn suspects this could be due to the 'Elvis In Concert' productions recently happening at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC and at the Mohegan Sun Arena in CT.
We are reliably informed that the album is on sale for $5, along with others, at such stores as Walmart.

Iceland's First Elvis is Baptized! What a strange news item - as The Icelandic Committee on Human Names recently approved the name Elvis, and so Iceland’s first little Elvis was baptized on January 29. Elvis is actually the boy’s middle name; his full name is Theodór Elvis Ólafsson.
The baby's father, Ólafur Dadi Helgason, says he is an Elvis Presley fan and owns many of the king's albums. "It’s a cool name and maybe we’re honoring rock 'n' roll as well" says Helgason.
In Iceland, all human names must come from an approved list of names which conform to Icelandic grammar rules, among other criteria. The Committee on Human Names has concluded that the name Elvis cannot be used in the following ways: Elvis (nominative), Elvis (accusative), Elvisi (dative) and Elvisar (genitive).

Led Zeppelin and Elvis Presley: EIN contributor Jeremy Roberts reports on the meeting between Led Zeppelin and Elvis Presley - as discussed by lead singer Robert Plant (shown right with Elvis shirt) on the recent David Letterman Show.
Robert Plant ... "When the room was suitably full, the door opened at the end, and this guy came in (Plant gets up and demonstrates how Elvis swaggered around the couches). Elvis was doing a better show in that suite than he was at night onstage.
We talked for about an hour and a half. The amazing this is, it was so natural and funny. Of course, music was the key. We definitely talked about what his music meant to us.
Elvis inquired, "What are your music roots?" And we all had the same roots…that sort of blues out of Memphis and Mississippi. Elvis then asked, "Do you do a lot of rehearsals?"..

Straight-laced Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld met Elvis!: Former US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has recently revealed that he and his wife met Elvis Presley.
It was in that job that he met Sammy Davis Jr., the entertainer who was also very interested in the battle against poverty. Sammy Davis later was responsible for what may be one of the most unusual meetings of Rumsfeld's career.
Davis invited Rumsfeld and his wife, Joyce, to see an Elvis Presley show at a casino in Las Vegas. Rumsfeld has never seen Elvis perform or even heard him sing. But he quickly became a fan.
"He (wore) scarlet scarves, and he would wipe his face. He'd stand up there and sing and it was fantastic. He'd sing the most ridiculous thing in the world and people would cheer and yell and love it and I would sit there and go like this," Rumsfeld said, putting his head in his hands.
|
|
"Then he would sing a ballad and it was absolutely beautiful."
After the show, Davis, took the Rumsfelds backstage to meet Elvis. Somewhere in the crowd, Joyce Rumsfeld lost track of her husband.
"Joyce gets carried away and she's talking to somebody and she couldn't find me. And she finally looked around the room and way off in the corner and Elvis Presley had me cornered. I was against the corner and he's big and he's like this and I was right behind him. He was talking about the United States Army," Rumsfeld said.
As for Elvis' famous scarlet scarves, one of them ended up with Mrs. Rumsfeld, and according to the former Secretary of Defense, "it's framed."

Elvis' King James Bible On Display in New Graceland Exhibit: 2011 marks the quater-centenary of the publication of the "King James" Bible in 1611. The word of God was a very important part of Elvis Presley's life, as he often looked to religious writings as a source of inspiration. Elvis always kept a copy of the Bible near him, and sometimes gave dramatic Bible readings to his family and friends. In the 1970's, he studied various religions and philosophies, seeking answers to questions about why God had chosen him to become so famous.
Elvis' copy of the "King James" Bible will be on display in The Roots of Elvis exhibit, which is opening at the end of this month as part of the Graceland VIP tour. The exhibit will tell the story of Elvis' early years and the influences that shaped him as a person and music legend.

Jerome "Stump" Monroe EIN Interview: Jerome "Stump" Monroe was the drummer for The Sweet Inspirations, and toured with Elvis from the first 1969 Las Vegas concerts through to the very end in 1977.
When regular drummer Ronnie Tutt was ill or absent, 'Stump' stood in as the replacement with the TCB Band three times over those years. 'Stump' Monroe played with Elvis in Philadelphia in 1971, Las Vegas December 1975 and finally in Madison on June 24th 1977. The Madison concert would be Elvis' third last performance, the soundboard of which has just been discovered and released on the box-set The Final Curtain.
This means that Stump has finally got to hear the Madison 1977 concert that he played on for the first time in 33 years!
Jerome 'Stump' Monroe is a charming, down-to-earth man who despite having played over 1,000 concerts with The Elvis Presley Show considers himself as no one special!

Official Statement from Spankox Regarding his EPE Court Finding:
>> First of all I'd like to say that I never infringed anything. On the contrary, I've been doing quite a lot for Elvis Presley and his Estate. For those who don't know, EPE and Sony Music have been selling since 2008 my Elvis Presley remixed songs and they largely benefited by the fact that I've brought Elvis back to the top of the International record sales charts, introducing Elvis Presley to a whole new generation and to millions of new fans worldwide. Also the promotional value of my work for Elvis Presley and Graceland has been huge. My "Re:Versions" album was in 2008 the first official Elvis Presley remix album in history. It was praised by the original Presley's producers like Mike Stoller and band mates like DJ Fontana and I was called by EPE to Graceland to present my work to thousands of Elvis fans. When last summer this Claim was notified to me I was already working on the new remix of "Fever" and on the forthcoming Elvis Presley "Re:Volution" album, so it felt like a friend had stabbed me in the back. |
|
Having said this, I'm not accepting this ruling and I'm already working to ask the Court to discharge it because I think it is not correct. In primis Field Fisher Waterhouse (EPE's lawyers) didn't follow the compulsory pre-action protocol. They filed the Claim out of nowhere, without even trying to contact me with one single letter, accusing me of infringing EPE's copyright when they instead knew that I didn't infringe anything. They also chose the wrong jurisdiction (it should be Italy, where I'm based, not UK) and asked to the Court to set the hearing in London exactly in the days when, as I wrote them, I couldn't have attended it because I was busy for shows in Italy. In Italy this would not be acceptable and I'm surprised that this can happen in the UK. I'm also surprised that the judge didn't consider all this nor my lawful request (supported by evidence) of rejecting the jurisdiction because I live in Italy, not in the UK, and the fact that I have valid agreements in place with EPE, which were completely ignored.
Anyway I think the biggest problem to solve now remains to Elvis Presley Enterprises and their lawyers Field Fisher Waterhouse. In fact I was suspecting that behind this Claim there was something else: my relationship with EPE had been fantastic so I couldn't explain this sudden Claim. So I investigated and I found out that they were working on a remix album entitled "Viva Elvis", that I think was largely inspired by my "Re:Versions"; it also included some of the same songs that I remixed and were included in "Re:Versions" and "Re:Mixes". Later I found that they had been infringing my own intellectual property and copyright using without any authorization my own original slogan "Elvis as you've never heard him before", created by me and used since 2008 for the promotion and sale of my Elvis Presley "Re:Versions" album (the first historical official Elvis Presley's remix album, also released by Sony in the UK), for the promotion and sale of their "Viva Elvis" album in the UK and worldwide. This has been obviously causing a big damage to me and also amounts to passing off. I'm now waiting to hear back from EPE's lawyers to know if they prefer to set this matter amicably or not.

EPE signs with Celebrities Entertainment in Europe: Possibly connected to the illegal distribution clampdown and also the Public Domain laws in Europe, EPE have signed a 3 year deal with a German agent Celebrities Entertainment to manage Elvis licensing rights for all of Europe, including UK.
At the moment, there are over 20 licensees in Europe for Elvis, of which more than half are UK-based. Celebrities Entertainment will be looking to generally expand the product offering across Europe, with regions such as Benelux, Scandinavia, German speaking countries and Southern Europe being key priorities.
"We are very excited to be representing the Elvis Presley brand exclusively in all of Europe," commented Ulf Verspermann, MD of Celebrities Entertainment. "We look forward to working with the existing licensees, as well as expanding the licensee base with new partners in Europe."
Carol Butler, VP of international licensing at EPE, added: "The demand for Elvis product internationally continues to grow every year. With such high interest and activity, we've found it necessary to expand our international agents. We look forward to working with Celebrities Entertainment."

50 years ago, 1961: An interesting snippet from the 'Commercial Appeal' newspaper, 50 years ago in 1961.
>> Four hours after the box office sale of tickets for the Elvis Presley charity show started yesterday, a "sold out" sign went up at the Central Ticket office in Goldsmith's. However, 668 seats are still available in the gallery of the Amphitheater of Ellis Auditorium and they will be offered on a "first come, first served" basis at 9:30 this morning at the ticket office. Gallery seats are $2 each. A section has been reserved for Negroes. "Memphis has never seen anything like this in the entertainment business," a veteran showman said last night.

EPE Wins Legal Decision Against "Spankox' Agostino Carollo: On February 1, 2011, EPE was awarded summary judgment against Agostino Carollo (DJ Spankox) in the Chancery Division of the High Court, England and Wales.
Mr. Carollo requested permission from EPE to create a remix album of Elvis Presley Christmas classics. While the parties had entered into an agreement with respect to Mr. Agostino's first album of Elvis Presley remixes and a follow-up album, EPE advised Mr. Carollo that it would not support nor endorse such a Christmas remix album. Nevertheless, Mr. Carollo released the Christmas remix album which included EPE's trademarks, logos, and photographs.
In June 2010, EPE sued Mr. Carollo for “breach of their previous contracts, trademark infringement and passing off.” On Feb 1, 2011, the Chancery Division of the High Court agreed with EPE's legal arguments and awarded EPE a summary judgment. As part of this summary judgment order, Mr. Carollo is restrained from continuing to infringe EPE's trademarks and ordered to pay to EPE monetary damages and attorney's fees.
This is one of many legal actions that EPE has undertaken that show the company’s dedication to protecting its intellectual property.

EPE Takes Legal Action Against Global Bootleg Ring: EPE took yet more action (see above) in stopping the commercial sale and distribution of a DVD/CD set which included recordings and audiovisual footage of Elvis Presley concert performances. Working with a team of investigators across three continents, EPE was able to track down the individuals they believe to be behind the release and distribution of the box set.
As of today, EPE has begun action in the Chancery Division of the High Court against Boxcar, the alleged source of the infringing materials in the box set. On an order from the High Court, on January 25, 2011, EPE lawyers and computer experts were authorized to search Mr. Prizada's home for evidence of the sale and distribution of the box set. The evidence uncovered led to the filing of a lawsuit for copyright infringement.
|
|
On February 2, 2011, EPE also filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court, Northern District of Florida, against Bud Glass, an Elvis Presley memorabilia collector, for the alleged illegal sale and distribution of the box set in the United States.
EPE is currently reviewing the evidence and considering filing additional lawsuits against other individuals responsible for the manufacture, sale, and release of this particular box set as well as other bootleg recordings and merchandise.

For those who may not know, Nielsen was an established anchor in the gospel music world, having been a member of Jake Hess & The Imperials, Hovie Lister & The Statesmen, and The Singing Speer Family.
Sherrill Nielsen sang back-up vocals for Elvis beginning in 1973 and Elvis’ record producer, Felton Jarvis, is on record as saying that Elvis considered Nielsen his favourite singer.
As a member of Voice, Nielsen remained with Elvis until the end and became a close friend. In concert Elvis would often ask Sherrill to take the spotlight and perform "Walk With Me," "Help Me," "Unchained Melody" and "Spanish Eyes."

"Spankox" Agostino Carollo Sued by EPE!: Elvis Presley may or may not be dead, but his intellectual property portfolio goes marching on. Elvis Presley Enterprises v Carollo ("Spankox" - trading as Everness) is a decision of Sir William Blackburne, a retired judge of the High Court, England and Wales. Yesterday he was asked by EPE to give a summary judgment on a claim for trade mark infringement, passing off and breach of contract against Carollo, who was making and selling albums that carried its marks.
"Spankox" (Agostino Carollo) has previously released Elvis REMIX albums that have been endorsed by EPE.
The background is that EPE (a US corporation) holds several Community trade marks relating to the great man's name. Carollo, a former licensee of EPE's intellectual properties in respect of various items of Elvis memorabilia, asked permission to make a new Elvis Remix album which EPE refused. Undeterred by this trifling setback, Carollo carried on making and selling the album in the UK. Reassuringly for his customers, the album and its artwork bore EPE's marks and
|
|
signature hologram, acknowledging that they belonged to EPE.
EPE sued Carollo in England and Wales. Carollo wrote to the court to dispute its jurisdiction, also arguing that he had a valid contract with EPE to make and sell the album. EPE stood its ground, also stating that it had built up significant goodwill in its trade marks and logos to the extent that a substantial body of the public, upon seeing those marks and logos, would believe those goods or services to be those of EPE and its lawful licensees.
Sir William Blackburne had no difficulty in granting summary judgment in favour of EPE. While Carollo incorrectly disputed the court's jurisdiction - he also did not offer any proof of his entitlement to use EPE's intellectual property, so he was unlikely to emerge victorious from this little spat.

“Losing Graceland” New Novel: A new book from Random House by author Micah Nathan.
Described as, “An irreverent tale about a recent college grad, a mysterious old man who may be Elvis, and a perilous road trip that could lead to the old man’s final comeback.”
Author Micah Nathan told EIN, "I wrote 'Losing Graceland' over the course of one year. Researching Elvis’ life took about two years. Along the way I found something about Elvis that many people forget: his humanity. And I tried to include that humanity in “Losing Graceland.” I didn’t want to go for something cheap; I wanted an honest (and, at times, painful) portrayal of who Elvis would be, had he not died. How would he view his life? Would he still believe in redemption? Would he even want redemption?"
Reviews of the book state, “Nathan presents the reader with several fantastic characters in this rollicking, adventurous tale. Readers will pore through this fast-paced, adrenaline-filled novel and eat up the fantastic dialogue that brings Elvis back to life in a new, deliciously lascivious way.” —Booklist

More images from Myrna Smith's Memorial Service: The service at the First Christian Church of North Hollywood last Saturday was arranged by Myrna's son and his wife.
EIN's special friends Paul & Joan Gansky attended, reporting that that it was very special to see Estelle there... and hear Elvis songs played. They opened with 2001 which went into 'See See Rider' ... and then played 'Peace in the Valley' which they played at the end of the service too.
It was a very moving memorial.
Myrna Smith was very loved, and will be missed by everyone.

'Funny How Time Slips Away' - OUT THIS WEEK: Straight Arrow's new CD release, in a jewel case with a now standard 16-page booklet: "FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY (SA 2011-18-02), features Elvis’ May 23rd, 1977 show from Providence, RI.
Producers are aware of the fact that Elvis' May '77 tour was an uneven one, compared with previous tours. He performed 14 shows in a row, and for the first two concerts he was reported being lethargic and unwell. However, the 3rd show of the tour was already solid with the singer in relatively fine form and good voice. As usual, Elvis paid attention to ballads like "You Gave Me A Mountain", "My Way" and "Hurt". There are also other solid performances, namely "Little Sister" and "Early Morning Rain". The CD title song was performed for the very last time, and is performed in the first half of the show.
The audio-quality of the recording is pretty good. As you've come to expect from Straight Arrow, the producers managed to get the best possible source. We ended up with the choice of TWO 1st generation copies of different original tapes, obtained from the persons WHO WERE THERE.
|
|
The better tape was chosen, and the other one was used to fill a few missing seconds. The recording was completely restored and the sound was enhanced for the best possible listening pleasure.
The CD package is completed with a 16-page booklet, including a collection of rare photos from the Providence show; several are published for the very first time! The liner notes were written by a person who was THERE and describes the show in detail. Also included is a positive press review of the show.
"Funny How Time Slips Away" released this week. Don’t miss your chance to obtain another cool hour with The King, as provided by Straight Arrow!

Rolling Stone magazine names "Top 10 Greatest Dead Rock Stars": Last week Rolling Stone magazine gave their readers the slightly morbid task of voting for their favorite dead rock star. The feedback was overwhelming – and now we've compiled a top 10 based on your votes. Number One by a fairly wide margin was John Lennon.
Elvis was voted Number Five. They note "Elvis Presley's final few tours were sad affairs where an increasingly bloated King huffed and puffed his way through limp versions of his hits. There were, however, moments of brilliance. One night in June of 1977 in Rapid City, Iowa he sat down at the piano and belted out a gorgeous rendition of "Unchained Melody." Knowing he'd die just two months later makes the video even more gut-wrenching to watch.

5. Elvis Presley
6. Freddie Mercury, 7. Janis Joplin, 8. George Harrison, 9. John Bonham, 10. Keith Moon

Priscilla Presley exhibits some wit! Glimpses Priscilla Presley'd wit recently surfaced during her return to Las Vegas to receive the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Woman of the Year honors.
As a pre-event reception was wrapping up Presley was taking a group photo with daughter Lisa Marie, rocker Vince Neil and his girlfriend, Alicia Jacobs.
"What a motley crew," she cracked, in a nod to Neil, the Mötley Crüe frontman who camped out in her Beverly Hills guesthouse a decade or so ago.
The story EIN likes was told by "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe regaled the crowd with a classic story about Priscilla's fun-loving side.
Several years ago she and Lythgoe were crossing Las Vegas Boulevard when they spotted a young Elvis impersonator.
Lythgoe said Priscilla dashed up to the Elvis impressionist, removed her oversized sunglasses and said, "Remember me?"

Elvis’ Sound Engineer Bruce Jackson Dies in Plane Crash: Bruce Jackson - "Bruce the Goose" as Elvis called him - was one of the legends of the live sound business in both Australia and worldwide - he worked for Elvis for six years.
After working for Elvis, Jackson went on to become Bruce Springsteen’s lead sound man and recently he has been working for Barbra Streisand. He worked many other famous stars including Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie Wonder.
Jackson’s other passion was flying and he owned his own plane that he kept in Santa Monica. This weekend he was flying alone when his plane crashed in a steep ravine in California, fire fighters had to be lowered into the area. It is reported that he did not survive the crash.
As Bruce Jackson started in the audio business at such at a young age, Elvis was only a small part of his career and Jackson was reluctant to be interviewed about his early years

with Elvis.
Jackson recorded hundreds of Elvis’ concerts from Soundboard but would not part with his tapes for release by BMG or FTD despite frequent requests.
While recently in Australia, he was however happy to show everyone his original "Elvis In Concert" jacket even letting a close friend of EIN try it on.
Too awful for words, what a great man he was. Jackson was only 59.

Depp was recently reported to have splashed out on an $17 million home in Venice after falling in love with the city during filming last year.

Priscilla Presley & Lisa Marie's new album: Nevada Ballet Theatre Woman of the Year Priscilla Presley promises that more changes are coming to Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis at Aria at MGM’s CityCenter. Over the weekend when she was honoured in NBT’s annual tribute, she saw the spectacular yet again. "Every time I see the show, I take notes," Priscilla said, "It’s in the best shape it’s ever been since it’s started. I think it’s much tighter. They’ve added more Cirque elements. I think that the dance numbers are better and so smooth. We’re still working on some music. They promised to put a little more gospel in it. More gospel, that was really where Elvis' were. They’re going to add more of him right in the beginning. And we’re still working on the ‘Jailhouse Rock’ number and trying to get him in that, too. They need him in that. Even though you’re blown away by the guys walking upside down, Elvis should be there. They are working on that.
It’s been a long journey, but it’s a wonderful tribute to him -- Cirque’s incredible celebration of Elvis."

"You might not associate ballet and classical music with Vegas. It may sound strange to people who think they know the city. But as a child, or for children especially being exposed, the performing arts are so diverse. It can go from ballet to jazz to musicals. Ballet is like a vitamin B shot of dance. So in order to really be proficient, having ballet as your foundation is really the ultimate."
Priscilla said that although she studied ballet as a child, she couldn’t get Lisa Marie interested in it.
Lisa Marie confirmed the story, "Ballet was the one thing she couldn’t make me do, to be honest! I think possibly she even dreamed of being in ballet. She was always very big on dancing, so I think it’s quite possible she could have become a ballerina if her life didn’t go in a different direction. You could see on Dancing With the Stars how she loved that. And this tribute makes me so proud of my mother. I’m very happy for her and honored to be here for this."
Lisa Marie said that she’s in the middle of her third album but doesn’t have a title yet. She said that it was being mixed and mastered while she was in Las Vegas. She is staying stateside but soon returning to her estate outside London with her fourth husband, musician Michael Lockwood, who also is her producer and guitarist.
"I don’t know how to quite explain the new record yet. We haven’t decided on the title, and after it’s mixed, I should be able to tell you in a couple of weeks more about the sound and what we set out to achieve. We’re very happy with it so far."

Family reunites at Presley's tribute: Priscilla Presley was honored as Woman of the Year Saturday night at the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black and White Ball at CityCenter.
The event turned into a family reunion with several surprises on Saturday at CityCenter.
Daughter Lisa Marie flew in from England with her husband, American guitarist Michael Lockwood, joining Priscilla's mother, Ann, Priscilla's son Navarone Garibaldi and other relatives and friends.
Even Jerry Schilling, a member of Elvis' Memphis Mafia, made it. He was in the wedding party when Priscilla and Elvis where married on May 1, 1967, at the Aladdin.
A program surprise came when Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil was among those speaking on Presley's behalf.
At a pre-event reception at Cartier in Crystals, Presley and Neil cleared up the mystery of why he was there.
Vince Neil had intriguingly stayed in the chauffeur's quarters at Priscilla's Beverly Hills residence about a decade ago. He was a friend of her former longtime companion Marco Garibaldi , who was doing business deals with Neil at the time.

Lamar Fike Update - No Final Service?: Once again, I have been authorized by his cousin, Tommy McDonald, to announce this update regarding Lamar's wishes for his cremation and burial.
Although Tommy is the Executor of Lamar's Estate and has Power Of Attorney as given by Lamar that he wished to be buried with his parents in their family plot in Mart, Texas, that will not be done. It seems the State Of Texas states that the closest blood relative, which in this case is Lamar's sons Jamie and John has the final say.
I have been informed that Jamie has decided irresponsibly, in my opinion, to instead take Lamar's ashes back to Atlanta where Jamie and his wife lives for their own purposes which are unknown at this time and totally disregard his father's wishes. Lamar also verbally stated that to me a few times over the past few years to be buried in Mart after he was cremated. Lamar had absolutely no connection to Atlanta or the entire state of Georgia whereas he lived in Mart as a young boy and had fond memories of it which is why his parents are buried there.
Therefore I am sorry to announce there will be no final service in Mart in case anyone had planned to attend. I have no idea if there will be one anywhere else.
Thanks,,
Marty Lacker

Rest In Peace Lamar. We will truly miss you.
