Family reunites at Presley's tribute: Priscilla Presley was honored as Woman of the Year Saturday night at the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black and White Ball at CityCenter.
The event turned into a family reunion with several surprises on Saturday at CityCenter.
Daughter Lisa Marie flew in from England with her husband, American guitarist Michael Lockwood, joining Priscilla's mother, Ann, Priscilla's son Navarone Garibaldi and other relatives and friends.
Even Jerry Schilling, a member of Elvis' Memphis Mafia, made it. He was in the wedding party when Priscilla and Elvis where married on May 1, 1967, at the Aladdin.
A program surprise came when Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil was among those speaking on Presley's behalf.
At a pre-event reception at Cartier in Crystals, Presley and Neil cleared up the mystery of why he was there.
Vince Neil had intriguingly stayed in the chauffeur's quarters at Priscilla's Beverly Hills residence about a decade ago. He was a friend of her former longtime companion Marco Garibaldi , who was doing business deals with Neil at the time.

‘LIVE IN VEGAS’ new FTD update: The new FTD of Elvis Live in Vegas in 1969 - previously called 'White Knight In Vegas’ - now gets a name change to the very unimaginative 'Live in Vegas'.
‘Live In Vegas' features a great complete concert the AUGUST 26, DINNER SHOW from Elvis’ opening Vegas season in 1969.
Ann Moses was a correspondent for the infamous NME and TIGER BEAT publications during this magic time and hHer unique photos from this season are featured in the package, some published for the first time. The booklet also includes a unique essay written by Ann.
‘Live In Vegas’ will be issued as a 5" digipack featuring a 12- page booklet and is mastered by VIC ANESINI from the original multi track tapes.

It is this great show that gave us the astounding ‘Suspicious Minds’ from the original ‘In Person’ album as well as the excellent ‘My Babe’ from the Silver ‘EAP’ box-set. The vast majority of this concert has never been released.

CORRECTION 'Elvis In Concert' Selling fine, there was never a 2nd Show at Mohegan Sun Casino: Below we reported that Elvis Matters had stated that due to a lack of interest one show at the Mohegan Sun Casino has been cancelled. This is INCORRECT as proven by our good friend Lee Dawson at EER since there was never a 2nd show booked for the Sun Casino. The only original concert on the 12th is still on. Ticket sales are fine and the TCB band then travels to NYC for the concert at Radio City Music Hall on the Feb 15th, which should be sold out by then.

Elvis Never Lived at Zsa Zsa Gabor House! As EIN suspected, the truth is revealed about Zsa Zsa Gabor's dubious claims (see story below). The woman whose Grandparents built the Bel Air Mansion now confirms that Elvis did not live there.
Prince Frederic von Anhalt has been laying the groundwork for the possible sale of his and wife Zsa Zsa Gabor's Bel Air mansion with tours for the press and claiming that Elvis once lived there. And that Gabor bought the home from Howard Hughes, who allegedly built it.
Both tidbits aren't true, says Barbara Yobs, an area mortgage banker whose grandparents built the place and sold it directly to Gabor in 1973. "Having him say all of these things, it just got me," she said.
Her grandparents actually sold the home directly to Gabor, the notoriously reclusive Howard Hughes only leased the place during most of the 1960s.
And Elvis never lived there.
Any real estate agent who ends up with the listing (the home at 1001 Bel Air Road doesn't appear to have been listed) would have to set the record straight or open themselves up to possible litigation.

'Heartbreak Hotel' was released 55 years ago today on January 27th 1956.
Billboard reviewed it as "a strong blues item wrapped up in his usual powerful style and a great beat"'.
For years afterwards 'Heartbreak Hotel' defined Elvis Presley – the echo-soaked voice, the plaintive lament of the singer down at the end of lonely street, the potent sexual promise offered to broken-hearted lovers.
'Heartbreak Hotel' marked the take-off of Elvis' domination of everything Teenage and Rock'n'Roll but the success of the record also marked the end of an era for the old-fashioned post-war music industry.

Lamar Fike Update - No Final Service?: Once again, I have been authorized by his cousin, Tommy McDonald, to announce this update regarding Lamar's wishes for his cremation and burial.
Although Tommy is the Executor of Lamar's Estate and has Power Of Attorney as given by Lamar that he wished to be buried with his parents in their family plot in Mart, Texas, that will not be done. It seems the State Of Texas states that the closest blood relative, which in this case is Lamar's sons Jamie and John has the final say.
I have been informed that Jamie has decided irresponsibly, in my opinion, to instead take Lamar's ashes back to Atlanta where Jamie and his wife lives for their own purposes which are unknown at this time and totally disregard his father's wishes. Lamar also verbally stated that to me a few times over the past few years to be buried in Mart after he was cremated. Lamar had absolutely no connection to Atlanta or the entire state of Georgia whereas he lived in Mart as a young boy and had fond memories of it which is why his parents are buried there.

Therefore I am sorry to announce there will be no final service in Mart in case anyone had planned to attend. I have no idea if there will be one anywhere else.
Thanks,,
Marty Lacker

Rest In Peace Lamar. We will truly miss you.

'Funny How Time Slips Away' new Import CD: Straight Arrow is planning a new CD release, in a jewel case with a now standard 16-page booklet: "FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY (SA 2011-18-02). It will feature Elvis’ May 23rd, 1977 show from Providence, RI.
Producers are aware of the fact that Elvis' May '77 tour was an uneven one, compared with previous tours. He performed 14 shows in a row, and for the first two concerts he was reported being lethargic and unwell. However, the 3rd show of the tour was already solid with the singer in relatively fine form and good voice. As usual, Elvis paid attention to ballads like "You Gave Me A Mountain", "My Way" and "Hurt". There are also other solid performances, namely "Little Sister" and "Early Morning Rain". The CD title song was performed for the very last time, and is performed in the first half of the show.
The audio-quality of the recording is pretty good. As you've come to expect from Straight Arrow, the producers managed to get the best possible source. We ended up with the choice of TWO 1st generation copies of different original tapes, obtained from the persons WHO
WERE THERE. The better tape was chosen, and the other one was used to fill a few missing seconds. The recording was completely restored and the sound was enhanced for the best possible listening pleasure.
The CD package is completed with a 16-page booklet, including a collection of rare photos from the Providence show; several are published for the very first time! The liner notes were written by a person who was THERE and describes the show in detail. Also included is a positive press review of the show.
"Funny How Time Slips Away" will be released in early February, 2011. Don’t miss your chance to obtain another cool hour with The King, as provided by Straight Arrow!

Ultimate ETA winner, Justin Shandor, Due In Court: After the recent debacle of UK Elvis impersonator attacking James Burton's son come news that another Elvis impersonator, this time Justin Shandor, was ticketed earlier this month on charges of providing false information to police. Justin Shandor of Salem, Oregon recently won the EPE official 2010 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest title! Sheriff's deputies allege he lied about smoking marijuana before his performance at the Clearwater River Casino east of Lewiston. Shandor, who performed as Elvis at the casino's event center Jan. 16, was ticketed by officers after the show, according to misdemeanor charges filed in Nez Perce County Magistrate Court. Sheriff's deputies responded after reports two men walked to a Volkswagen and were allegedly seen passing a joint prior to the performance.

New 'GI Blues' Deluxe FTD coming & More: In response to the MRS announcement of their "Public Domain" UK box-set, FTD has made the following announcement.
Hi All, Just a few pieces of information from FTD:
1) Whereas the (GI Blues) masters are definitely public domain the outtakes are not. Outtakes released within the 50 year period following their recording date are protected for 50 years from the date of release.
2) In the U.S. nothing is P.D.
3) As some people know. FTD has been working on our G.I. BLUES project for a while. The reason it takes a lot of time to complete, is that to achieve the optimum sound you have to go back to the original 3-track tapes, and re-mix
all the material -expensive and time consuming (something only SONY/FTD will be able to do, since nobody else has the tapes).
4) And off course the FTD release will include everything.
- Roger and Ernst

EIN Note - This year Elvis Masters from 1960 have moved into the 'Public Domain' area for release in the UK.

Johnny Wilkinson: Elvis's Right-Hand Man; In 1956 a 9 year-old Johnny Wilkinson met Elvis for the first time at the Shrine Mosque Springfield. Wilkinson didn’t know it yet, but the circumstances that came together that Saturday in 1956 would prove to be life-changing.
After exchanging some pleasantries, Wilkinson told Elvis why he was really there. With his characteristic boldness, present even at 9, he said: “There’s a reason I come looking for you today. I come to tell you that you can’t play guitar worth a damn.”
Wilkinson had watched Elvis enough on television to determine that he was a better guitar-player than Elvis. Taken aback, Elvis pointed to his Gibson guitar in the corner and told Wilkinson to show him how it’s done.
In 2011 Wilkinson now lives in the same home he grew up in, but he’s been just about everywhere else in the 40 years between. He returned to Springfield just a few years ago, and his playing days are over due to a stroke in 1989, which forced him to exchange his guitar for a cane. The screaming fans are gone, but in their stead he has two equally adoring dogs, Pugsley and Sammy. To meet Wilkinson now, there are just hints to his rock ’n’ roll past. His sideburns and mustache remain, as well as his gold necklace featuring Elvis’s band name, TCB, with its characteristic lightning bolt.
It wasn’t until 1968 that Elvis called on Wilkinson again in 1968. After a couple of phone calls, the first of which ended with Wilkinson hanging up on Elvis thinking it was his friends prank-calling him, Wilkinson went back to Elvis’s house to jam.
Elvis asked him to be his rhythm guitarist, but Wilkinson expressed some hesitations, as he was more of a folk picker than a rock ’n’ roll guitar-player. “Elvis pulled out a piece of paper, wrote something on it, handed it to me, and it was a money figure. He said, "Now will you be my official rhythm guitar player?’” With eyes wide, Wilkinson explains in a way only he can, “I looked at it and said, ‘You bet your ass.’”
For the next nine and a half years, Wilkinson traveled the world as a member of the TCB Band, compiling inimitable experiences and seeing an Elvis few people got close to. “He was a wonderful guy,” he says. “Don’t ever let anybody tell you different. He had his faults like everybody else. But he was a wonderful, nice, caring, compassionate and giving person. Outside of my own father, he was probably the most compassionate, giving and caring guy I ever met in my life.” He hasn’t forgotten the time in Memphis when Elvis saw a woman on the sidewalk longingly staring into the showroom of a Cadillac dealership. Elvis jumped out and bought  the woman a car on the spot. Wilkinson also remembers Elvis as a prankster who once shot a water pistol at him while playing electric guitar, accidentally sending 1,200 volts of electricity through his body.
Over the years, Wilkinson developed a friendship with Elvis, making his death in 1977 that much more devastating. “Even to this day, Elvis’s death still hurts me,” he says. “I’m sorry he’s gone, not just because he was my employer. He was my friend. He was like the brother I never had.” Reflecting on it all, Wilkinson says: “If everything just all of the sudden ended today, and I dropped over dead, I would not have a regret in the world. I wouldn’t change a single thing. I’m happy.”

Journalist Frank Lieberman dies at 68: Frank Lieberman one of Elvis Presley’s closest newspaper pals during the singer’s Las Vegas comeback years, and Siegfried & Roy publicist died Saturday at Summerlin Hospital.
Lieberman, who had been in declining health in recent years, was 68.
Lieberman worked for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner covering the entertainment beat.
Elvis liked Lieberman’s review of his show at the Las Vegas Hilton and sent Joe Esposito out one night to fetch the journalist. Elvis thanked him and agreed to a rare one-on-one interview.
One night in Elvis’ suite, Elvis asked Lieberman why he wasn’t wearing his TCB (Taking Care of Business) necklace, which was reserved for Elvis’ inner circle. Lieberman said he didn’t have one.
Elvis presented one to Lieberman and a TLC (Tender Loving Care) bracelet to Lieberman’s future wife, Karen. the Liebermans wore the mementos the day they got married in 1972.

“One night in the restroom at the Hilton a man saw the TCB necklace on Frank and offered him $10,000,” Karen Lieberman said. no way, her husband said.
He was Tony Danza’s publicist for 10 years and also represented Tony Orlando and Engelbert Humperdinck.

'Viva Elvis' receives a Makeover: Originally, it was the old Elvis Presley recordings that stayed out of the spotlight in Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis. They were raw -- and to be honest -- ancient in terms of our digital age. As the show continued to change, tweak and polish itself to perfection, the masters of music went to work, and now it’s their new soundtrack that drives the spectacular.
Producer Erich van Tourneau notes that now after more than a year of studio engineering, it’s the new soundtrack that propels the show along at a much faster pace and energy.
In the early stages of Viva Elvis, it told a familiar story in an almost flat monotone. It’s now been given new blood with excitement and a controlled but frantic fever pitch. The narrative has been cut down and the Col. Tom Parker character relocated. The dancing seems faster and more electrically charged. Now it’s all showmanship throughout and makes the blue suede shoe even larger than it is with the dancers sprawled all over it.
I didn’t see major changes to the "Jailhouse Rock" number, which is my favorite in the show. I still sat mesmerized watching the performers walk upside down in the air. How can you improve on that feat anyway? The amazing trampoline gymnastics seem faster and more challenging. Even the showgirl "Viva Las Vegas" finale seems a bigger and better spectacle.
Cirque has a reputation of always fine tuning and tinkering its productions, and now a year after it opened, Viva Elvis has found its heart and soul -- and produced its own soundtrack music for Elvis to rock on for years to come. There’s no danger that he’s ever going to be forgotten.
Elvis isn’t leaving this house for a very long time.

From Marty Lacker - Lamar Fike Passed Away:
I have the unfortunate task of officially sadly announcing the passing of Lamar Fike as authorized by his cousin Tommy McDonald who was very close to Lamar and was with him daily in his hospital room in Arlington,Texas. Lamar passed away very peacefully last night, Friday, January 21.

Lamar had been hospitalized since last October 14th and then transferred to the physical therapy wing of the hospital. Unfortunately he did not improve and was sent back to the hospital about a month ago.

Outside of Red West, Lamar was with Elvis the longest and he remained close to him until Elvis' passing.  Lamar was also very close to Elvis' mother.

Lamar's wishes to be cremated will be carried out and the Brown, Owen, Brumley Funeral Home, Ft. Worth are handling his funeral.  A memorial service will be held in Mart, Texas, one of Lamar's boyhood homes at a date to be announced.  He was born in Cleveland,Mississippi on November 11,1935.

Those of us in the Memphis Mafia who remained his friend are greatly saddened by the loss of yet another member of our close group.

May G-d Bless his Soul and may he Rest In Peace.
Marty

PS: This is the official announcement, his family has asked that it you hear anything else from anyone else do not believe it.

UPDATE - Elvis Presley's old Bel Air home NOT for sale: Ailing actress Zsa Zsa Gabor and her husband Prince Frederic Von Anhalt are selling their Los Angeles mansion, and have published the story everywhere that it was previously owned by Elvis. This is NOT true!

While it looks like Elvis' Hillcrest home, Zsa Zsa Gabor's house is located at 1001 Bel Air Road.

EIN was supicious of the original story but could not locate the address of the Gabor house - not even on the For Sale publicity!. THANKS to Thierry Dessaintes (rareelvispresley.com) for sending EIN the right information.

Gabor's publicist John Blanchette said the 8,000 sq ft estate, which boasts a total of 26 rooms, was originally built for the late aviator and industrialist Howard Hughes.
Gabor say that the property was purchased sometime in the 1970′s from Elvis’ Estate for only $600,000 but this is not true. 93-year-old actress Gabor is recovering in hospital following an operation to amputate her leg on Friday after developing a serious gangrene infection

How Elvis and Priscilla Evaded the Vegas Media: This week Priscilla Presley had to laugh at how difficult it would be today to pull off an under-the-radar Wedding of the Ages as she and Elvis did. Back on May 1, 1967, when she and Elvis eloped to Las Vegas, their biggest concern was TV gossip hound Rhona Barrett, who was hot on their heels.
Today, an army of celebrity snoops and photo snappers from A to TMZ would be swarming the Aladdin when they arrived.
Still, "it was quite a feat," said Priscilla, who will be forever linked to Las Vegas, where she returns Jan. 29 as Nevada Ballet Theatre's Woman of the Year at the Black and White Ball.
In an interview this Wednesday Priscilla described the most famous wedding in Vegas history.
Months earlier, Priscilla, then 21, had donned a disguise to check out wedding dresses with her faux "fiancé," Charlie Hodges, one of Elvis' pals.
The day before the wedding they flew here from Palm Springs, Calif., where Frank Sinatra provided his private plane to take them to Las Vegas to help them avoid the media.
With media camped in front of their Palm Springs residence because of wedding rumblings, Elvis and Priscilla sneaked out a back door and flew to Las Vegas about 2 a.m. to get a marriage license before dawn. Other than the clerk and another couple, the office was deserted.
Today their secret would have hit the Internet and been halfway around the world before the sun came up.
With their $15 marriage license, they headed to the Aladdin, where arrangements had been made to have Nevada Supreme Court Justice David Zenoff marry them.

To keep it under wraps, part of the Aladdin was shut down. The ceremony was in the living quarters of Aladdin President Milton Prell. They got married about 11:30 a.m., she recalled, and couldn't believe they had outfoxed the media.
They hadn't completely: The story was already out, several hours earlier. Getting the scoop was Las Vegas-based United Press International reporter Myram Borders, who got a 1 a.m. tip that Elvis was getting married at the Aladdin.
Borders, a former rival and now a friend, helped me put together questions for Priscilla on Wednesday. She got the exclusive by waiting around the Aladdin all night until she hit the jackpot. She saw Zenoff about 8 a.m. He confirmed he was there for the wedding.
Elvis and Priscilla flew back to Palm Springs that afternoon to celebrate with family and friends.
What few people know, Priscilla said, was that the wedding was called off in November because the date leaked.
Her wedding dress is now at Graceland.
"Vernon (Elvis' father) kept everything. Not that he was a hoarder," she said.
Why Vegas?
"Because we knew everything happens fast in Las Vegas," she said

'Elvis Memphis to Madison 1977' The Gas Station Incident: Bruce Frey witnessed Elvis stopping a brawl at a Madison Gas Station in June of 1977 - the very last time Elvis would be on tour.
This particular public encounter with Presley at the gas station has been written about numerous times. Bruce Frey first reported the event to the local newspapers the next day and since then it has been re-told multiple times in various biographies.
Now over 30 years later, Bruce Frey tells it properly for the first time. Over the years he has gathered enough information to finally piece the puzzle together. Bruce has interviewed nearly everyone involved, including bodyguard Sam Thompson, cousin Billy Smith and Veteran Police Detective Tom McCarthy.

Here for the first time is the full story as he witnessed it.

2011 Graceland Tourism Campaign Celebrates 1965: Today EPE unveiled the 2011 tourism campaign for Elvis Presley’s Graceland and Heartbreak Hotel.
The campaign features black and white headshots of Elvis Presley against a bright contemporary color palette. Both the images and headlines are a subtle nod to the 55th anniversary of 1956 - Elvis’ year of firsts.
“1956 was a whirlwind year for Elvis who had only begun breaking new ground with his unique performance and vocal style,” said Scott Williams, VP of Marketing for EPE. “With all the events in his life we will be celebrating throughout the year, it was a great place for us to begin creatively when thinking about our annual tourism campaign.
Remarkably, 55 years ago, Elvis enjoyed his first RCA single and national hit, "Heartbreak Hotel," his first album, "Elvis Presley," his first movie, "Love Me Tender," and his first television appearances on The Dorsey Brothers' "Stage Show," "The Milton Berle Show," "The Steve Allen Show" and "Ed Sullivan."
Developed by Combustion Design, a Memphis design firm, all the headlines in the 2011 campaign speak to the king’s journey from a very humble beginning to his triumphant successes in the entertainment business. “From Rock to Riches,” “Started a Revolution, Ended up a king,” and “Broke the Records, Then Broke the Rules” are just a few of the fun headlines.

The £20 Elvis novelty banknote that fooled the German bank clerk: Contrary to what many people might believe, bank notes with Elvis Presley on them are not legal tender. So when one ended up in the banking system in Germany the German Central Bank was not best pleased.
This is the £20 Elvis banknote which a counter clerk in a German bank failed to spot when a customer paid money into their account with a pile of multi-denominational notes.
The illegal tender was one of a number of personalised Elvis novelty notes that are for sale as souvenirs on the Internet to fans of The King.
The German Central Bank displayed it and several others in Frankfurt this week as specimens of the 60,000 fakes which managed to get into the country's monetary system last year.
'Obviously it is a fraud but it entered the banking system so someone got some real money for it,' said a bank spokesman, who was clearly all shook up.
Elvis banknotes can be found for sale on Ebay for £1.49
One banknote specialist commented, 'I'm sure lots of people would like to see Elvis on a note, but the Federal Reserve would never do it'.

"Controversy Rages Over New 'Elvis' Recordings"- AS IF!: More tabloid trash from idiots who can't tell their Elvis from a terrible impersonator has hit the media today!
TMZ (who sure know their Elvis - NOT!) has obtained a 30-second clip from what could be TO THEM a historic recording of Elvis & Jerry Lee Lewis back in 1960 -- their only duet in existence -- but there's a problem ... some people claim it ain't legit.(EIN - No, Really??!!!)
The clip allegedly features Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis shooting the breeze at Jerry's house -- and based on the audio, Jerry's a big fan of the King.
A guy named Rod Lambert from Nashville tells TMZ, he bought the tape over ten years ago at a yard sale ... and only recently discovered that he could have a piece of rock and roll history on his hands.
An audio forensics expert verified that the voices on the tape were indeed Elvis and Lewis ... but Lambert -- who posted more of the clip on his website -- tells us, the company in charge of Elvis' catalog denied it was really the rock legend.
Lambert claims the full 30-minute version of the tape contains some pretty explicit dialogue -- and although Elvis doesn't say much (EIN - we wonder why!)

Unseen Elvis: Presley's first visit to Detroit in never-published photos: It's May 1956. Americans were fretting about President Eisenhower's health, slugger Mickey Mantle was the toast of the baseball world, and 21-year-old Elvis Presley was about to make his first appearance at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. It had been a whirlwind five months for the soft-spoken truck driver from Tupelo, Miss., who recorded his first RCA Records session in January, yielding "Heartbreak Hotel," which shot to No. 1. Elvis was winding up a tour of the Midwest when he came to Detroit on Friday, May 25.

Fifty-five years later, never-published photographs of the day Elvis first  came to Detroit have been brought to light by author Michael Rose for a forthcoming book, "Spring of '56."

The photographs show Elvis in and around the Fox Theatre, greeting Detroit Times contest winners backstage, relaxing in a downtown arcade and enjoying himself at an adult party. Detroit teenagers may have been ecstatic at Elvis' arrival, but newspaper writers barely hid their disdain.
Vera Brown wrote in typically snappy, Detroit Times tabloid style of Elvis:

"He rarely gets a haircut, does a kind of hillbilly derivative. When he winds himself around a mike and gives out, the kids go crazy. Nothing like it since the early Frank Sinatra days. . Only way to keep calm about all this is to try to remember how silly you were in your high school days."
Brown met Elvis at the airport, where she demanded to know why he needed four Cadillacs.
"I just like automobiles," he said. His latest one was pink with white leather upholstery. Brown also described his turnout: a black shirt open at the throat, and black pegged pants.
Why, the columnist demanded of the singer, was he so popular?
"If I knew I would tell you," Elvis replied politely. "I honestly don't know how it took place, but if I can go on from here into the movies, that would be swell." He told reporters he doesn't drink and has no girlfriend yet. "I still love my mother who lives in Memphis."
Incredibly, the day before Elvis' three Friday shows (4, 7 and 9:45 p.m.), Bob Bothwell, managing director of the Fox Theatre, said good seats were still available.
As if Elvis wasn't enough entertainment for the $1.50 ticket, there were numerous other acts on the bill: The Jordanaires (his backup singers), Frankie Connors, Jackie Little and Maurice King and the Wolverines (the house band at Detroit's Flame Showbar).
At age 14, Carol Bainbridge was one of the "teeners" who really didn't care what snarky, middle-aged newspaper writers thought of Elvis. Her father, Larry McCann, had interviewed Elvis on his WXYZ-TV talk show, and he scored her two tickets to the 4 p.m. show. Bainbridge and a girlfriend took a bus downtown from Three Mile Drive and Mack, and sat in the front row. "I touched his shoes and screamed my heart out while he sang in front of me," Bainbridge says.
But are YOU in these photos?
Did you meet Elvis Presley backstage at the Fox Theatre in 1956? Are you, or a loved one, pictured in any of the photos?
Author Michael Rose is putting together a book, "Spring of '56," on the subject of the memorable spring when Elvis broke out into mainstream success (and teenaged hysteria). and would liek to hear from you.

The first person to contact The News and identify any of the people pictured (except Elvis, of course!) will receive a copy of Rose's book. E-mail your identifications to swhitall@detnews.com

'Rihanna Mediabuddies talk B.S. with "UK chart record" set by Elvis' - AS IF!: As reported below EIN was suspect about the Media reports that Rihanna has tied a chart record set by Elvis Presley after hitting the top of the pop charts in Britain again.
With her hit, "What's My Name," Rihanna has become the first female solo artist in UK history to achieve five number one singles for five years in a row and ties with Elvis. WRONG!!!!
NOW we discover that it was a pile of publicity B.S as suspected!
As EIN UK correspondent Brian Quinn points out, Elvis had No.1's in 7 consecutive years (not 5 as claimed for Rihanna) as follows:
1. All Shook Up (1957)
2. Jailhouse Rock (1958)
3. One Night/I Got Stung (1959)
4. A Fool Such As I/I Need Your Love Tonight (1959)
5. It's Now Or Never (1960)
6. Are You Lonesome Tonight (1961)
7. Wooden Heart (1961)
8. Surrender (1961)
9. His Latest Flame/Little Sister (1961)
10. Rock A Hula Baby/Can't Help falling In Love (1962)
11. Good Luck Charm (1962)
12. She's Not You (1962)
13. Return To Sender (1962)
14. Devil In Disguise (1963).
AND will fans in 33 years time remember what Rihanna's five Number Ones were? Sadly, no! Elvis is GOLD - and you just can't beat him!

'Heartbreak Hotel '- 55 years ago today: On January 10th 1956, fifty-five years ago, a just-turned 21 year-old Elvis Presley walked into RCA's McGavock Street, Nashville recording studio and laid-down his first million seller 'Heartbreak Hotel'. Sounding unlike anything Elvis had recorded previously, drowned in echo and with a melancholic voodoo-sounding tale of suicide and loneliness, the song was also unlike anything in the pop charts of the day.
How strange that this moody, dark tale of alienation was recorded in the building RCA shared with the Methodist TV and Film commission! Sun producer Sam Phillips called the song a "morbid mess" while Glenn Reeves, the singer who cut the demo, insisted that his name was kept off the demo as it was the "silliest title" he had ever heard.
RCA 's Steve Sholes was similarly concerned, as this sure wasn't the Sun Sound that he had hoped Elvis would be recording. Rock'n'roll fans can be thankful that Elvis however understood the magic that had just been created and had faith in its release.
On this historic week we look at the true importance of 'Heartbreak Hotel' with a spotlight that nicely places this classic recording in its proper historical context.

Sony To Close CD Factory: Sony the company that brought us the Walkman plans to shut down a CD-manufacturing plant in southern New Jersey in March. About 300 employees will be laid off once the 50-year-old Sony DADC plant in Pitman, N.J., is closed. Sony said it plans to shift CD-making operations to a facility in Indiana.
The music CD is fast becoming a relic. The emergence of digital music and music players, as well as the rise of illegal file sharing, helped to hasten the demise of the CD as the main music distribution format.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, U.S. music sales fell 2.4 percent last year and digital track sales grew only 1 percent to 1.17 billion. But CD sales fared far worse. When it came to albums, sales of both newer CDs and catalog titles dropped by 16 percent and 23 percent respectively--these two categories also saw double-digit losses the previous year, according to the LA Times.
The plant closure is just another sign that physical media's days are numbered.
A real sign that we are coming to the end of an era - EIN wonders how this will affect future Elvis product?

EPE Sues Chrysalis Music For $5 Million!: Elvis Presley Enterprises claims Chrysalis Music Group owes it more than $5 million in licensing fees for The King's music. EPE accuses Chrysalis of "an astonishing lack of internal controls and related failures," and "failure to properly render payment" of "substantial sums."
Co-plaintiff Belinda Aberbach is an heir of the estates of Julian and Jean Aberbach who, with Presley's manager Col. Tom Parker, set up two New York corporations in the mid-1950s to control copyrights on "certain musical compositions recorded by Presley." The corporations are Gladys Music and Elvis Presley Music.
Presley owed 25% of each corporation, Parker owned 25%, and the Aberbachs owned 50%, according to the complaint in New York County Court.
After The King died in 1977, a series of assignments left EPE owning 50% interest in the compositions, and the heirs of the Aberbach's owning the other 50%. After trusts were set up, EPE remained 50% owner, and co-plaintiff Aberbach owns another 25%, according to the complaint.
Under a 2002 agreement, Chrysalis was to collect revenue worldwide and deposit it correctly into accounts for EPE and Aberbach. Chrysalis also was "obligated to promote and attempt to obtain licenses with third parties for use of the compositions."
Chrysalis was to get commissions of 5% to 8%, but no more than $400,000 a year, according to the complaint. But the complaint states: "Despite repeated assurances to EPE and Aberbach that proper controls were in place for its royalty processing, in fact, Chrysalis suffered from an astonishing lack of control and

related failures. As a result, Chrysalis has failed to pay EPE and Aberbach substantial sums they are owed under the agreement. Chrysalis' failure to properly render payments to EPE and Aberbach constitutes a breach of the agreement."
They say Chrysalis commingled funds, took more commissions that it was entitled to, miscalculated foreign currency exchange rates, "claimed, without documentation, that there were overpayments," "erroneously deducted certain advances it claims were unrecouped," "failed to properly account for revenue received," and "made numerous other errors."
The plaintiffs demand no less than $5 million, and costs.

Happy Birthday, Elvis: Author  Noah St. John wrote this very nice article about Elvis for his 76th Birthday. We thought it worth re-publishing.
>> On October 3, 1945, a ten-year-old boy stood onstage at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show talent contest. He was dressed as a cowboy. One of his teachers had encouraged him to enter the contest after hearing him sing during morning prayers. He had to stand on a chair to reach the microphone. He placed fifth.
A few months later, he received a guitar for his 11th birthday. What he really wanted was a rifle or a bicycle.
Two of his uncles and the new pastor at the family church gave him basic guitar lessons. He learned mostly by watching other people. But he didn't like singing in public. He was too shy.
Yet something inside kept pulling him back to music. In 1948, his family moved from Tupelo, Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee. The boy would spend every moment of his free time on Beale Street, the heart of the Memphis blues scene. He'd often bring his guitar to school.
Yet his eighth grade teacher gave him a "C "in music. She told him that he had "no gift for singing".
During his teenage years, he was often bullied by classmates, called a "mama's boy". Still painfully shy, he nevertheless stood out because of his appearance -- including long sideburns, slicked-back hair and funky clothes.
In 1953, the young man walked into the offices of Sun Records. In those days, you could pay for studio time and create your own record.
The receptionist asked him who he sounded like. The young man replied, "I don't sound like nobody."
But the record went nowhere. He tried out for a local singing group, but failed the audition. He told his father, "They told me I couldn't sing."

Unbeknownst to the young man, Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, had been saying to his friends, "If I could find a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel, I could make a billion dollars."
Then Sam heard this young man's record. Sam invited him back to the studio and asked him to sing as many songs as he knew.
Yet even then, the recording session was not going well. Things just weren't coming together.
The young man and his backup musicians were about to pack it up and go home, when the young man suddenly picked up his guitar and started signing a 1946 blues song, "That's All Right".
In the words of one of the musicians from that legendary session:
"All of a sudden, [he] just started singing this song, jumping around and acting the fool, and then Bill picked up his bass, and he started acting the fool, too, and I started playing with them".
Sam, I think, had the door to the control booth open... he stuck his head out and said, "What are you doing?' And we said, 'We don't know.' 'Well, back up,' he said, 'try to find a place to start, and do it again.'"
Phillips immediately began taping; he knew this was the sound he'd been looking for.
Sun Records released the single. No one had ever heard anything like it before.
And within three years, Elvis Presley was an international superstar.

A few years ago, I got the chance to visit Graceland, Elvis's Memphis mansion and now National Historic Landmark. I was speaking at a corporate conference and the company arranged for a private tour of Graceland for me and the company executives.
It was an amazing experience, one I'll never forget.
Elvis died on August 16, 1977, so his home is decorated in that distinctive 70's style and will remain that way forever.
One thing that surprised me is that Elvis's mansion is much smaller than you might think. For example, the kitchen is positively cramped.

The pool in the backyard -- the one you see in all those home movies -- is only average size.
But in one room of Graceland is an enormous display of his different costumes, shimmering sequins and bursting with color.
And then the small garden in the back where he, his mother, and stillborn brother are buried. It's impossible to be there and not stand in awe and humility.
Whether or not you're a fan of the man or his music, there's no question that Elvis Presley is the world's first modern superstar.
He transcended race, age, and has even transcended death. He continues to make more money every year after his death than he ever made while he was alive.

We have each been given special gifts, unique to us. Your gift may not be appreciated, or even recognized, by your teachers, your peers, or even your family.
Yet, it's there.

“The Day Elvis Met Nixon” Just Released: 'The Day Elvis Met Nixon', a first hand account of Elvis Presley’s historic meeting with President Nixon, has just been published by the Richard Nixon Foundation and is now available online.
Released to coincide with the anniversary of Elvis’s 76th birthday, the book is a trove of rare photos, original documents, and anecdotes from the December 21, 1970 encounter presented in a fun and interactive way for readers of all ages.
Told through the eyes of Egil “Bud” Krogh, White House aide and liaison to the Drug Enforcement Administration, The Day Elvis Met Nixon recounts the surprise of White House staffers when the King of Rock-n-Roll appeared at the front gates of the Executive Mansion to deliver a handwritten letter to the President.
For Elvis, the goal of the meeting was to receive a badge and credentials from the DEA as a “Federal Agent at Large,” contending that he could use his popularity among the youth to curb the nation’s narcotics epidemic.
Krogh tells how the Elvis meeting request moved up the White House chain of command, how it was approved, and how he arranged an agenda on such short notice.
At the meeting, Elvis presented the President with a gift, a silver-plated Colt 45 gun and bullets now on display at the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, Calif.  Later the same afternoon, he received his badge from the DEA.
Today, the Oval Office photo of President Nixon and Elvis Presley continues to be the most requested photo from the National Archives.
“The meeting between Elvis and President Nixon remains in my mind the most novel and interesting,” writes Krogh. “While these two men came from totally different backgrounds, they tried to find ways to cooperate in responding to one of the most severe problems.”

Elvis' favorite roller coaster Zippin Pippin comes to Green Bay: Good News - Green Bay Wisconsin's Bay Beach Amusement Park will soon be home to a classic wooden roller coaster known as the Zippin Pippin. The remains of the defunct ride were purchased from a Memphis, Tennessee park last year. It was known to be Elvis Pressley's favorite roller coaster as he often rented out the park so that he could ride it without being bothered by fans. Reports are that Pressley rode Zippin Pippin eight days before he died. To support the ride's history, Bay Beach Amusement Park is working on adding Elvis' favorite food, peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Bay Beach Amusement park is aiming for the ride to open when the park opens on May 7th. Even with the harsh Wisconsin weather, recent construction photos show that Zippin Pippin's track work is nearly complete. It appears that the park should be able to hit their target date. Bay Beach Amusement park is the ninth oldest operating amusement park in the U.S. according to ZippinPippin.org. The park is already home to historic amusement park rides, so this classic wooden coaster with an interesting claim to fame should be right at home.

'Rihanna ties UK chart record set by Elvis' - AS IF!: Media reports are out that Rihanna has tied a chart record set by Elvis Presley after hitting the top of the pop charts in Britain again.
With her hit, "What's My Name," Rihanna has become the first female solo artist in UK history to achieve five number one singles for five years in a row.
The only other solo artist to equal this achievement was Elvis in the 1950s.
However, what is totally forgotten - as always - is that the number of singles / downloads sold nowadays needed to get to Number One is a paltry figure. In the past, sales of near 1 million were standard, and singles stayed as "chart toppers" for weeks in a row.
The price of a 'single' was also comparatively much higher. Boy, did we have to save out pocket-money to buy a 45 RPM!!
Nowadays the turn-over - and 'single' releases are far more frequent and transitory - and the price easily affordable.
Will fans in 33 years time remember what Rihanna's five Number Ones were? Sadly, no!

Come on EPE, Do Something Positive!: Recently EIN has been contacted by fans with regard to a new porn DVD being released that completely mocks Elvis. While EIN has deliberately not mentioned it until now (and has written to Graceland asking for an official reply) our good friend Lee Dawson from Elvis Express Radio has a perfect response....
>> Now is a good time for EPE to show Elvis fans all around the world that they give a damn about Elvis and his image.
Just a few days before Christmas, Elvis fans from many countries who give their time to help promote Elvis and work to help keep his memory alive were threatened with legal action for doing nothing more than reporting the news and are also in the throws of legal action against someone for using the name Graceland.
YET, there is not a single word from EPE to show how they are attempting to get the piece of trash "Elvis XXX A Porn Parody" stopped from being released on January 8th, HIS BIRTHDAY.
The DVD cover has someone who has been IMPed up to resemble Elvis and has ELVIS in big letters across the cover.
The trailer has this IMPed up porn star in a jumpsuit performing a butchered "Suspicious Minds" but with words changed to fit the porn X-Rated adult market.
EPE cannot do their usual cry of "if we do take action against these things it only gives more publicity to it", as the thing is all over the news with the media taking great delight in ripping the s##t out of Elvis.
And EPE say they won't release 'Elvis In Concert' to save him ridicule.....too late!
Come on EPE, do something and deal with things like this and not attacking the fans who dedicate their lives in order to help keep the money rolling your way.
Elvis fans.....email EPE! Get your friends to email EPE! Elvis fans unite and call for action.

Elvis Presley Day Proclamation: As the world celebrated the King of Rock 'n' Roll on his birthday, Memphis and Shelby County officials have also proclaimed January 8 to officially be Elvis Presley Day. During the day's ceremony on the front lawn outside the Graceland mansion, Memphis Mayor AC Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell spoke about Elvis' lasting legacy and impact on pop culture.

Prince Elvis of Denmark ! ?: On Elvis' birthday - news from Denmark of the birth of twins. Crown Denmark Princess Mary and Prince Frederik welcomed their new twins into the world on Elvis' Birthday. One boy and one girl and while names have not been announced, the details of the children were released. The birth of the twins on the Elvis Presley birthday had Prince Frederik making light of the day at hand. "We can call one of them Elvis for now."

Elvis was of course also a twin. Princess Mary is originally from Australia but note that Danes have a tradition whereby a child is not named right after birth; they have 6 months for that.

Parkes Failed in its World Record ETA attempt: It is estimated that more than 15,000 Elvis fans shuffled their blue suede shoes into central western NSW for the annual Parkes Elvis Festival.
But even with all those fans in town willing to swivel their hips in honour of their favourite rocker, Parkes failed in its world record attempt to have the largest gathering of Elvis impersonators. They needed more than 646 fans to impersonate Elvis to achieve this.
"We didn't break the record, but we did have 610 impersonators - including Priscillas - so we're going to write to the Guinness Book of Records and see if we can get an entry for that," Parkes mayor Ken Keith said.
The town has still had a win of sorts with 3000 extra people thought to be in town compared with last year.
The 12,000 that descended on Parkes for the festival in 2010 managed to generate $5 million for the local economy.
"I'm confident that we'll break the record in 2012," the mayor said.
EIN Note: Disgruntled EIN readers (see 'Save Elvis' Image' above) who think that the Parkes Australian Festival demeans Elvis' image miss
out on the fact that Parkes is basically a "Country Fair" with an Elvis theme. It has the same vibe as the Tupelo Elvis Festival - but without the real connection! There is ELVIS music blasting out of every corner of this small country town and the vibe is fantastic. How could it not be with 12,000 fans all who love Elvis and who are all in a great mood? Everyone chats to you and strangers become friends just through the Elvis connection. The final Sunday Elvis Gospel service carries a more important and charitable theme and is a very moving experience.
The fact that Parkes did not break the Elvis impersonators record actually shows that the vast majority of the Parkes attendees are ordinary folks not dressed up in appalling white-jumpsuits, who just want to spend the weekend soaking up Elvis' great legacy.

Lisa Marie Presley returns to LA for Elvis' Birthday: She sold her Los Angeles home after deciding to move to the UK last year.
But Lisa Marie Presley is back in Los Angeles again after arriving at LAX yesterday on the eve of her father Elvis Presley's birthday. Accompanied by husband Michael Lockwood, 42, and their two-year-old twin daughters Harper Vivienne Ann and Finley Aaron Love, the family were all wrapped up warmly against the chilly weather.
Back in California: Lisa Marie Presley arrived in Los Angeles yesterday with husband Michael Lockwood and their twins Harper and Finlay
Presley left Beverly Hills for the English countryside in August last year after deciding that Los Angeles was not somewhere she wanted to live any more. And the constant gossip surrounding her ex-husband Michael Jackson helped form Presley's decision to flee America.
In October, Lisa Marie appeared on Oprah and spoke for the first time since Michael Jackson's death about their marriage.
She said she was 'angry' at the way he pushed her out of his life but nevertheless  regretted not trying to get through.

Linda Thompson Birthday Message: Linda Thompson posted this birthday thought on her Facebook page today:
"The heart is a funny thing, with a mind all its own... It withers like a garden... Left untended and alone...
And the thorns of loneliness invade, to destroy what they can't steal...
So easy to hurt...but oh so hard to heal." - Larry Gatlin
...and one of Elvis's favorite song lyrics!
Remembering that special January 8th birthday of an extraordinary man!

(EIN Note: ‘The Heart’ was on Larry Gatlin’s 1974 debut album ‘The Pilgrim’ which also featured his composition ‘Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall’ that Elvis would later record.

Myrna Smith Los Angeles Memorial, January 29:  To all the fans of my mother Myrna Smith:
I wanted to give you all a great big THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all that you did for my mother. Not only when she was ill, but all the support you gave her during the years of touring, as well as, listening and purchasing her music. Many of you followed her closely and she loved you for that.

My mother was a wonderful lady. My life with her will never be forgotten. I have watched my mom from day one of her time with Elvis and the people from Graceland, showing many people what a great entertainer should project. My mom, although had friends by her side all the way to the end, always understood our special relationship. I will always love and respect my mother for who she is and what she became. Her grandson had the opportunity to sit with his Grandmother long before she became too ill  and shared with her his aspirations to follow her entertainment footsteps.

Thank you all for the respect while the family was grieving and we appreciate your well wishes and condolences. I have included the memorial information below and would love to hear from you or see you there.

For people who cannot make it to the memorial, we will be taking all emails and posting them at the memorial for people to read. We may even read a few there.
Sincerely,
Martin Smith

Elvis impersonators not so lonesome in Parkes: Thousands of Elvis Presley fans are checking into 'heartbreak' hotels in NSW for the annual five-day Parkes Elvis Festival, which is timed to celebrate The King's January 8 birthday. The die-hard fans at this year's event won't just be singing karaoke and taking in street parades. On Saturday they will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest-ever gathering of Elvis impersonators.
The record attempt requires people to be dressed head-to-toe in Elvis attire and be ready to swivel their hips and belt out Love Me Tender at 8:30am AEDT at the Cook Park Main Stage.
Last year's festival brought in 12,000 people - doubling the population of Parkes - and the mayor says they are expecting 10,000 to 12,000 this year. He says it will be worth about $5 million to the town's economy.
"We have overseas visitors too - people from Singapore and Finland have already arrived and last year there were fans over from the UK and America."
The mayor says they are expecting "perfect" weather for this year's festival with temperatures expected to be in the low 30s. It will be a lot cooler than last year's event which saw people sweating in their synthetic fibre jumpsuits and wigs as temperatures reached 40 degrees. The festival runs until Sunday January 9.
Former yellow Wiggle Greg Page will be displaying his collection of Elvis memorabilia, worth $3 million to $4 million, during the festival. The sold-out 'ELVIS EXPRESS' train (above) left Sydney for Parkes this morning.

Elvis’ Palm Springs Estate Threatened By Bankruptcy: "Kings Holdings, the owner of Elvis Presley’s former Palm Springs, estate rocked into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.
(This is NOT Elvis' "Honeymoon Hideaway" at Ladera Circle as noted below)
According to attorney Paul Wynn the bankruptcy filing is a result of a dispute with Kings Holdings’ lender over a financing agreement. In an interview Tuesday, Wynn said Kings Holdings would continue operating during its restructuring and pointed out that the estate, located on Chino Canyon Road, is still offering tours to fans of the King at the property they’ve sought to dub "Graceland West."
The two-acre desert estate, no "Blue Hawaii," is home to an approximately 5,000-square-foot, Spanish-style white stucco house with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Built in 1946 for the family behind the Jergen’s skin care line, Elvis didn’t move in until 1970. The singer dropped $85,000 for the home, where he went on to record eight songs. After his death in 1977, wife Priscilla Presley sold the property.
Kings Holdings’ president is Laura Whittier, who acquired the estate with husband Reno Fontana. In a note on their website, the Fontanas say they offer "the finest in Southern hospitality" to visitors, especially those who "share a camaraderie that only an Elvis fan can understand." In court papers, Kings Holdings reported assets and debts each in the range of $1 million to $10 million. A call to the estate went unreturned Tuesday."

Church Service For Myrna Smith: The Church Service this Saturday in Veldhoven (the Netherlands) doesn't stay unnoticed in the Elvis World. ElvisMatters got messages that will be read during the Ceremony by Jack Soden (EPE), Terry Blackwood, Joe Moscheo, Donna and Ronnie Tutt and many others. Ed Bonja just emailed them as he will be attending the Ceremony in person:
"Hi, I read about the Memorial Service and I will be going there for the Saturday evening service. I really felt that I needed to be there, as it is the only memorial I heard about. Ed."
And here's an email from Terry Blackwood: "Thanks for doing this. I'm sure the families are appreciative of this and it will give them comfort and solace for the days ahead."
Charles Stone: "Thank you for doing this for Myrna"

After the Service, all fans are invited to a get together at 'Merlijn', next to the Church.

EPE taking Legal Action over "Danish Graceland": A building reminiscent of Elvis Presley’s Graceland Estate in Memphis, USA is under construction in Randers, Denmark (right). The building is set to be finished in April and is already a sight to be seen for those driving by. The business people behind the Elvis Presley legacy is now trying to prevent the Danish building from being named Graceland Randers.
Henrik Knudsen, the man behind the project, wonders why they make objections to it now, as the project has been well known for a long time. The construction has been under way for quite a while and his registration of the name Graceland Randers is from 2006. So why wait so long to make objections? Henrik feels that this borders on harassment.
Henrik had the name Graceland Randers registered at the Danish Patent & Trademark Directorate in 2006 and got it approved, although he then thought it almost impossible to register "Graceland" because the name was already used by so many.
Henrik explains; I have taken tourists to Graceland in Memphis for 20 years now. I am actually one of the few in Memphis with a group of Elvis fans right NOW.
GRACELAND RANDERS will contain other things than you will find at Graceland, or in Memphis for that matter. Restaurant, banquet facilities, shop and so on. We will be doing everything that people expect, but also lots of things that people most likely don’t expect.
Henrik has taken up the fight and hopes he will be right in the end.

BLUE HAWAII 50th Anniversary Special in L.A. for January 8: A one Night Special Event for Elvis’ Birthday at the Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood. Saturday, January 8 at 7:30 PM a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of BLUE HAWAII.
"Before all the formula ‘60s movies that turned Elvis Presley from an icon into a self-parody, there was this sparkling original that subsequent filmmakers sought to use as the cookie-cutter guarantee to Presley movie success. Sumptuous cinematography, frothy plot, pleasing comic turns, skillful acting from co-stars Angela Lansbury and Joan Blackman, and songs as enchanting as the island paradise all aim to please. From "Rock-A-Hula Baby" to "Can't Help Falling In Love" and the title song - this is classic Elvis, post-army and pre-rhinestone. The movie and the soundtrack were among the most successful of his career."
Elvis' birthday will be celebrated with the grand opening of the Maui and Sons Bar and Grill in the Egyptian's courtyard. Activities, food and tropical drink specials, karaoke and more starting at 4 PM in the Courtyard.

Rock legend Chuck Berry collapses mid-concert: Rock'n'Roll legend Chuck Berry shocked his fans when during a Chicago Show on Jan 2nd, he fell ill and collapsed mid-concert. After a fine start, 15 minutes into the set it was obvious something wasn't right. Complaining repeatedly about his out-of-tune guitar and after a lacklustre rendition of 'Reelin' and Rockin' Berry made his way to the piano, murmured "I'm struggling", and slumped face-first into the keyboard and didn’t move for several minutes. After being helped off stage, the singer returned 15 minutes later but was unable to finish after being interrupted by the arrival of paramedics.
Some reports cite that Berry had not felt well before the show began, and that he was tired from two previous New Year’s Eve performances in New York the day prior to this concert. The seminal rock'n'roller is "fine", his agents said. The 84-year-old refused hospital treatment and left the venue without assistance.

Graceland to Host Chilean Miner for Elvis' Birthday This Week: It's a visit to Memphis fit for a king! Chilean miner Edison Peña, who became known around the world as a major Elvis fan, will be visiting Graceland for the 2011 Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration. Edison arrives later this week, and we could not be more excited!
During his four-day trip to Memphis, Edison will take part in several birthday celebration events, including cutting the cake during the Elvis Presley Day ceremony on Saturday, January 8. Fans can watch that event live on our GracelandCam!
Edison will also see the best of what Memphis has to offer by staying at The Peabody Hotel, taking in a Memphis Grizzlies game, visiting the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, and touring and recording at Sun Studio.
Edison was one of 33 miners brought to safety last October, after 69 days of being trapped underground. A self-described major Elvis fan, the 34 year-old asked for Elvis music to be sent into the mine so the trapped workers could have sing-alongs and keep their spirits up.
After the rescue, Graceland and the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau offered an all expenses paid trip to Edison and a guest with airfare provided by Delta Air Lines. Following his visit to Memphis, Edison will be flown to Las Vegas to see the new hit Cirque du Soleil show Viva ELVIS at ARIA Resort & Casino.

Australia Parkes ELVIS Birthday Festival 2011: Meanwhile in Australia, over 12,000 Elvis fans will congregate on the small country town of Parkes to also celebrate Elvis' Birthday with a festival running from January 5 - Sunday Jan 9th. Incredibly Parkes has absolutely no connection at all with Elvis, yet has its own Elvis Museum (with a sensational selection of genuine memorabilia) and it is likely that more Elvis fans will be in Parkes than at Graceland!
The 5 day Parkes Elvis Festival program features a dazzling array of more than 100 individual events and runs from 5 - 9 January 2011. This year the key performer is Dean Vegas who is doing four shows, plus there are the regular Elvis Gospel Church Service, the iconic Elvis Street Parade, the Crowning of Miss Priscilla, the Elvis Golf Day & Dinner, the Back to the Altar Wedding Ceremony.
This year they are also trying to beat the Guinness World Record for 'The Largest Gathering of Elvis Impersonators'. You can join in at 8.30AM on Saturday 8th January at the Cook Park Main Stage. Dean Vegas, Renowned Australian Elvis Tribute Artist will host the Guinness World Records™ attempt.
In 2007, 147 Elvis impersonators converged on Parkes to sing Love Me Tender, breaking the previous record of 78.

A Brand New Elvis Discovery or Total Bull.S?: Once again "Legends of the Archives" are trying to fool fans with another supposed "new Elvis discovery".
The press release talks of a new discovery of "folksinger-turned stuntman" C.E. Rider singing a duet of "Blue Christmas" with none other than Elvis Presley - but not to be released until next Christmas!
Their promo story is worth reading if only for a laugh..
"These are the real deal. I can tell. They have engineering notes on them from B. Porter. Its most likely one of Bill's many side projects and he got C.E. together with E.P. Its also very evident how much this meet-up inspired the movie 'Spinout'," stated Lead Archivist, Jeff Jergens.
The company's Founder, Mongue, had this to say "Our sound lab is analyzing the voice-prints. After they are confirmed and wavers are
signed, the original analogs will be cleaned and remastered digitally. If all matches properly, the world will hear an unexpected C.E. Rider Christmas album with an Elvis Presley collaboration in time for Christmas, 2011."
While the 'Save The Last Dance For Me' Jerry Lee Lewis supposed Elvis duet was a classic in its own way, especially as it was on Sun Records, this "new discovery" smells like a skunk to EIN!
To really get you laughing please check out "Legends of the Archives" previous published discovery of Elvis singing "Take Me Away" in 1972!!
Few impersonators sound as bad! Click here if you dare.

Original "Long" Aloha Cape for sale on EBay: Elvis' original "Long" Aloha cape that was never worn in concert is once again for sale on EBay. The asking price is $250,000 and is noted as being "with provenance from Graceland Archives". Bidding closes January 10th. Described as ...
In terms of authentic iconic Elvis items, it does not get much better than this!  This is THE ORIGINAL cape which was made for Elvis to wear for the legendary "Aloha from Hawaii" Concert in January, 1973.  This cape was designed by Elvis' designer Bill Belew so that when Elvis came on stage, he could be "hidden" behind the long cape.  The idea was that Elvis would appear on stage for this world-first event, behind the cape and at the end of the Aloha Intro, he would drop the cape and turn to face the audience, revealing himself to the waiting crowd.
When Bill Belew arrive in Hawaii with this magnificent 5 foot long cape, Elvis tried it on and almost tumbled over backward as he tried to walk.  It was decided that for the concert itself, a shorter version of this design should be used.  Bill Belew then had only 24 hours to make a new cape.  This cape was then sent back to Graceland and remained there, in its archives until the charity auction held in 1999.  This cape represents not only the single most significant live performance ever by Elvis, but also the ultimate in authenticity and provenance.  I purchased this cape from the successful bidder at the Graceland Archives auction, so in effect, I am only its 3rd owner ever!  You could be it's 4th!
As most people know, this cape and it's design are significant (not only because of it's place in history) but also because the design of the eagle and the colours were to represent Elvis' passion and patriotism for his own country.

Remembering Myrna Smith: Elvis fans have all been shocked and saddened by the passing of Myrna Smith on Christmas Eve.
Myrna's daughter-in-law Candi Smith sent this to EIN,
"Thank you for your message! I will pass it on to Myrna's son Martin. We are truely sad. We had a pretty good gathering around Myrna as she passed. We sang Christmas carols and had Elvis gospel music playing for her. Silent Night will not be the same to my husband and I.
Thank you for your support and the support of the fans. We have been reading a lot of the cards that were sent to the hospital and are truely moved. Myrna is a great lady and will live in our hearts forever.
We are preparing a family letter to the fans, the fans are truely amazing!!!
- Candi Smith.

No Funeral Service for Myrna.
Myrna's friend Carole reports, "I've received inquiries asking about sending flowers for Myrna. Myrna's body is being cremated. There is no funeral or service or viewing, & Myrna's ashes are not being buried or interred.
Myrna's brother advised he will take the urn with Myrna's ashes home & place it on the mantle next to her mother's urn. For those who want to do something, I believe Myrna would most like a charitable donation made in her honor.
Myrna was a very giving person & always thinking of others. Most Elvis fans give to charity or belong to a fan club that supports one or more charities. Since the fans are the ones who helped Myrna, I think she would be proud to have donations made to fan club supported charities in her honor/memory.
And, since the fans are the people who took on the role of Myrna's family & helped her, the fan clubs & fans can post the information regarding anything done in Myrna's honor &, thus, keep her Elvis Family informed. I never discussed this with Myrna, so the above are simply my thoughts, based on having known her.
Carole Drexler"

The new ad is for Haven Holidays, a British company that runs holiday parks around the United Kingdom. The commercial features a young boy who is trying to describe to his class what he did on his summer vacation. Elvis' voice provides the perfect soundtrack.

Elvis Presley, 2010's "Most Dangerous Autograph": Forgeries of well-known entertainment, sports and historical figures such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, John F. Kennedy and Babe Ruth top the year's "Most Dangerous Autographs" lists compiled by experts at PSA/DNA Authentication Services of Santa Ana, California, the world's largest autograph authentication company.
Buyers beware: many alleged Babe Ruth autographs are bogus, many purported Elvis Presley signatures should be marked "return to sender." Over half of the signatures of some famous sports, historical and entertainment figures submitted in 2010 to PSA/DNA were judged to be fakes. Elvis Presley topped the PSA/DNA lists of "the most dangerous autographs" of the year.
"This past year, our experts reviewed over 200,000 autographs submitted by collectors and dealers worldwide. PSA/DNA does not often receive obvious forgeries, so if our rejection rate for a particular autograph, such as Elvis Presley, approaches or exceeds 50 percent, you can only imagine how high that percentage might be in the overall marketplace," Orlando cautioned.
Information about the deceptive autographs will be available online at PSA (http://www.psacard.com) next month.
According to PSA/DNA, these are the "most dangerous autographs" the past year:
1) Elvis Presley
2) The Beatles
3) John F. Kennedy
4) Marilyn Monroe
5) Michael Jackson
"With his recent passing in 2009 at the age of 50, Michael Jackson forgeries flooded the marketplace in 2010," Orlando said. "Prices for authentic Jackson autographs generally range from $200 for signed piece of paper to $1,000 or more for a signed photograph."

Myrna Smith passed away Christmas Eve: It is with great sadness that we have to report that Myrna Smith passed away on Christmas Eve 2010 around 11.49pm. EIN was lucky enough to spend some time with Myrna when she was in Australia touring with the TCB Band. She was an absolute delight to socialise with, always full of life, happiness and a wonderful positive person to be around.
Myrna Smith was a key member of the group 'The Sweet Inspirations' who were founded back in the fifties by Cissy Houston.
Over the years the group sang backup vocals for a series of key artists such as Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield and even Van Morrison.
The "Sweets" started touring with Elvis in summer 1969 after he decided to incorporate some Gospel-Soul into his basically rock'n'roll Las Vegas comeback shows.
The core group became Myrna Smith, Estelle Brown, Sylvia Shemwell (who died in 2001 after a stroke), along with new member Portia Griffin.

While performing on the 'Elvis: The Concert' European tour in March this year, Myrna developed pneumonia which eventually led to kidney failure and a stroke. She died in Canyon Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, LA.

Another key member of Elvis' great legacy leaves us way too soon.
Myrna Smith will be greatly missed.

Myrna Smith Interview with EIN: It is with great sadness that we report that Myrna Smith passed away on Christmas Eve 2010. Myrna Smith was one of the original Sweet Inspirations, the backing group who sang with Elvis in concert from 1969 until the end.
She has also worked with stars from Aretha Franklin to Van Morrison and has provided the world with some of the best soulful harmonies that have ever been recorded.
In 2004 EIN's Piers Beagley interviewed Myrna Smith when she was in Australia along with the TCB Band. She was an absolute delight to spend time with, always full of life and happiness.
She talked in depth about her time with Elvis and also how she introduced a young Lisa Marie to Michael Jackson.

Elvis, June 1977, the Final Curtain: We have received more reader feedback about the Final Curtain release, as well as whether the CBS TV 1977 special should be released at all.
Here is a perceptive comment from EIN contributor Lon – and below our 2006 spotlight on whether ‘Elvis In Concert’ should be officially released – now with new reader feedback...
>>> I disagree that the CBS TV Special does not capture any of Elvis' final glory. His version of ‘Hurt’ is amazing. His ‘How Great Thou Art’ is Amazing. And I've always been moved by his version of Early Morning Rain in the Special (more than the version on the soundtrack released on record). Sure Elvis didn't look great in the special. But he went out and faced the lights and cameras and overall did a good job. This is where his "realness" shines through. Elvis was nervous. He was very much human and it shone through. And to me I leave the experience loving him more.
Part of me wishes Elvis had been able to be more open with everyone about his illnesses. He would have had an easier time today with Facebook and Twitter communicating directly with the fans. Elvis was a tough guy and didn't want to admit his sickness and his colon issues. That's understandable -- just look at the ridicule and jokes you read on blogs from Dr. Nick's recent comments about Elvis dying.
Here's the bottom line - Elvis faced the cameras and put on two shows that had some very strong points. The issue really isn't whether ‘Elvis in June 1977’ is "good enough" for release. The issue is are we as Elvis fans "good enough" to watch the shows at face value. Is EPE "good enough" to let us remember our hero and the fact that he truly was human.
Merry Christmas to Elvis - rest in peace! – Lon.

(News, Source,ElvisInfoNet)

'Elvis In Concert' 1977 TV special; Should it be released officially? There is always a heated debate as to whether Elvis' final TV special should be released. Should we accept Elvis with the sadness & pain of his last concerts, or do we agree with EPE's policy of glorifying the god-like Elvis mega-star and deny that anything changed after 'Aloha'?

Some fans scream YES for the release of 'Elvis In Concert', yet they are often labelled as idiots for wanting Elvis' good clean image once again vilified.

In this stimulating article, Gary V explains why most of us are in fact deluded!

(Spotlight, Source:ElvisInfoNetwork)

June 1977 and Elvis was facing his Final Curtain: The last few months of Elvis’ life are ones of sadness, where fans can so easily observe the marvellous spark of Elvis’ life fading away all too quickly. Instead of Elvis being given time off and medical treatment that he so obviously needed, Elvis was still being overworked ‘on-tour’ by a manager who was flogging his horse to death. And most likely only to pay off his ever-mounting gambling debts (see EIN’s Spotlight The Dark Side Of Colonel Parker).
While a large number of fans are rightly not interested in the sadness of Elvis' final months, there is a core-group that are fascinated in this period of emotional turmoil as Elvis still managed to turn in some fine performances for his adoring fans. The final CBS TV special however sadly does not capture any of Elvis’ final glory (Hell, they even left out ‘Unchained Melody’!) but it also misses out on any of the emotional roller-coaster of Elvis facing that final curtain.
Fans who are interested in this period - and still love to hear Elvis singing his heart out in those final concerts - do surely deserve a proper in-depth look into these final months, such as with a 400-page book, with soundboard CDs, home-video of Elvis’ final concerts and of course the CBS TV tapes, hopefully with a better edit than the final TV special.
Set in a proper context, and compassionately written so as to not only explain the ups & downs but also the effect of Ginger Alden upon Elvis’
moods, it would help clarify how everything was falling apart on Elvis while he struggled to keep going - and at the same time put on great shows for his fans. Sadly EPE will never ever do this, or do this properly. It is highly likely that in the end they will release 'In Concert' BUT in its original form with no money put in to re-edit it to a proper documentary about Elvis' final months. (Thus maximising their profit.)
While EIN supports and celebrates EPE’s best ideas, at times it seems pretty disgraceful the way they can treat fans which such disregard. I mean, fancy not even bothering with ‘Johnny B Goode’ on the recent ‘Elvis On Tour’ DVD re-release (you & I can find Chuck Berry, what was their excuse!?) and also not even 5 minutes of new outtakes as a bonus!
So as most fans know, here we have a company (‘BOXCAR’ How Colonel Parker must be laughing now!) who is trying to present a massive project on Elvis’ final months for a small group of hardcore fans in a way that EPE never would.
The print run mentioned is only 1,500 copies, which will never dent any of EPE’s final "General Public release" of the 1977 CBS show.
Several Elvis News websites have been threatened by EPE lawyer's letter for posting "advertisements" about this release. EIN questions exactly 'What is the legal definition of what constitutes an advertisement?' And 'When is a 'news item' an advertisement?' Like EIN, most Elvis news sites post worldwide news which we work hard on to gather about Elvis. We are not paid for these news items as we would be if they were advertisements as described.
Note that EIN does not sell any bootlegs and being in Australia we are miles away from any "Bootleg" action. We also do not support bootleggers since they do deprive songwriters & musicians of their well-deserved earnings.
We also strongly support FTD for all they do in putting out great product to the fans and beating Bootleggers at their own game.
BUT after all, if the product was Officially released then the Bootleggers would go out of business without the need of lawyer's involvement. And guess what? EPE earnt $60 MILLION from Elvis's trademark last year - and all from Elvis' adoring fans.
Click here and send EIN your thoughts on this tricky topic.
