Elvis Loses Out In recent Major Pop Polls: EIN contributor Brian Quinn notes, "Can you believe the results of these two polls. As Elvis would have said "It's enough to stagger a billygoat!" However one only has to consider the VH1 general demographic to realise that Elvis coming in at #8 isn't all that bad.
And with Michael Jackson's death still a recent memory his impact in 2010 is hardly surprising.
In CNN's recent "Music Icon" poll Michael Jackson was voted as the number one global music icon. British pop group The Beatles, late Canto pop sensation Leslie Cheung, rock 'n' roller Elvis Presley and Reggae godfather Bob Marley also made the top five. No female artists made the list, although U.S. pop queen, Madonna came in at number six, narrowly missing a place. EIN notes that the voting looked strange to say the least, Leslie Cheung #2, really?
On VH1's '100 Greatest Music Artists of All Time', Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were the top five.
6. Jimi Hendrix 7. Prince 8. Elvis Presley 9. James Brown 10. Stevie Wonder
The list was determined by a poll of well-known music artists and music experts in the industry .
Interestingly current headliners like Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and The White Stripes failed to make the cut.

VIVA ELVIS - Behind the Scenes at Cirque: ARIA's Viva ELVIS cost more than $100 million to develop and stage.
The most recent addition to the Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil family of productions in Las Vegas opened last February, and so far is winning great reviews. It is fascinating to take a peek behind the curtain to better understand all that goes into creating such a dazzling production.
Most interesting is the fluid nature of the show, which isn’t locked in. Artistic Director Gene Lubas said it’s more akin to a living organism, adapting and changing in time. "Over time the show really develops into something. The beauty of working with Cirque is that it isn’t like Broadway, where the show opens and is locked. We can keep judging by audience response what is working and what is not working," says Lubas.
In fact, a lot of the show has already changed since it started in February. Producers made it more biographical and used more music to tell the story, but not necessarily in a chronological order. It also ends with Elvis’ triumphant comeback in Las Vegas and doesn’t address his final years. All the acts are driven by the song book, said Lubas, to keep the show moving so there is very little dialogue.
"We are heading in the right direction. The audience is now getting on their feet and having a great time. The beauty of this is that a lot of Elvis songs are less than four minutes so it’s bang bang. We were really able to take the highlights and positive aspects of his life and work in the Cirque magic and do an abstract biography. We tried to do it so it’s not a boring history lesson."
Aside from incredible acrobatics and dance from the performers, the music is of course the main reason people come to the show. But most of the songs have been rearranged with a modern spin so a new generation could fall in love with him and his music, Lubas said. For example, a 1960s Bossa Nova Baby song was turned into a hip hop mash-up, while another song was turned into a reggae song ('King Creole'). "Blue Suede Shoes" was transformed into a new hard rock song. Over 600 well-positioned speakers create some of the crispest sound we’ve ever heard, adding to the energy of the room as audience members actually feel every beat pulsating through them.

But the real magic is what’s happening backstage. Technical Director Dave Dovell has worked on two other resident shows and faced many construction challenges…like getting 14 separate lifts installed and having them work seamlessly twice every night. In all, there is $68 million of lifts and machinery.
Interestingly, Priscilla Presley was not heavily involved in the production. While Lubas says she provided great resource material such as home movies – which have been incorporated into the production – she didn’t really offer up her thoughts until the show was about to open.
"She saw what we were doing and then offered suggestions, saying things like, ‘Don’t make it look like Grease cause Elvis wouldn’t want it that way’," said Lubas.

'Elvis Meets The Beatles': Forty-five years ago AUGUST 27th 1965 - The famous night in 1965 when the Fab Four finally met the King. In 1965 The Beatles manager Brian Epstein initiated contact with Colonel Parker, and the decision was made that on the night of August 27, the Beatles would come to Elvis’ home for an informal get-together. Intensive security arrangements were worked out, and it was agreed that no press would be involved and no pictures would be taken or recordings made of whatever happened.

"So many things could have gone wrong," says Jerry Schilling, "If Colonel and Brian hadn’t gotten along, it wouldn’t have gotten past the phone-call stage. But there were no ego battles, and from the start it was approached as a pair of music greats coming together out of admiration for each other."

Piers Beagley and LA writer Chuck Crisafulli tell the story of this amazing night.

Nigel bids farewell to Elvis: We received plenty of supportive messages regarding EIN President Nigel Patterson's sudden notice of departure from the Elvis World yesterday. I'll leave the kind words to Elvis' best-man Marty Lacker...
>>> "It is with sadness that I read Nigel's farewell message to everyone here at EIN but I know that he has a good reason to stop doing something he loved and did a good job at.
I would personally like to thank him for all the great work he has done over the years to help keep Elvis' memory alive and I appreciate the things he also did to help me personally and some of the Memphis Mafia.
I know and am confident that he has left EIN in the more than capable hands of Piers and I know Piers will continue to carry on the first class operation of EIN that he and Nigel have performed all these years.
I have never dealt with Sanja but I know if she is the choice of Piers and Nigel she must be good. I wish her luck in dealing with me and the Elvis fans.
Take care Nigel and have a good life and good luck in whatever you do.
- Marty Lacker

'Remembering Elvis with Priscilla Presley' on BBC Radio: Next Wednesday Bill Kenwright will interview Priscilla Presley in the year that the King of Rock 'n' Roll would have turned 75. Born into an Army family in New York, Priscilla went to high school in Wiesbaden, West Germany, where she met her future husband, Elvis Presley. Although Priscilla and Elvis divorced in 1973, they remained close up until his untimely death in 1977.
Priscilla is a successful business woman and her acting work includes Dallas and the Naked Gun trilogy, as well as guest roles in Spin City and Melrose Place. In 1987, her book Elvis And Me spent six weeks at the top of The New York Times bestseller list before being adapted into a television mini-series. She's also developing a stage play based on her life, which is written from the perspective of a teenage girl thrust into the public eye because of her relationship with one of the most famous men in the world.

D.J Fontana Interview: D.J Fontana was Elvis' drummer from 1955 to 1969. Elvis first met Fontana when he appeared at the 'Louisiana Hayride' on October 16, 1954. In fact Fontana became the first person to play drums on the 'Louisiana Hayride' doing so behind a curtain since percussion accompaniment to "real" Country Music was still frowned upon. After joining Elvis' band Fontana played drums on around fifty Elvis recording sessions between 1956 and 1968. After 1969 Fontana became a session musician in Nashville. Fontana also appeared in several Elvis movies such as Loving You and Jailhouse Rock.

Earlier this year D.J. Fontana was still on the road performing in Crowley, Louisiana where he talked about his time with The King.
And in 1998 DJ Fontana was interviewed by EIN contributor Arjan Deelen.

A change at EIN: They say nothing stays the same forever.  After 40 years of involvement in the Elvis world I have decided to pursue new challenges and interests. The past 40 years has been an exciting rollercoaster ride with many ups and the occasional down.  Along the way I have made many lifelong friends and amassed several lifetimes of irreplaceable memories (not to mention a ridiculously large Elvis collection)!

I thank all I have met along the way, both face-to-face and online.  I have enjoyed the challenge, the stimulating debates and above all the wonderful comraderie.

There is an astonishingly enduring positive spirit in the Elvis world, one which symbolises Elvis’ impact on us all and one which I know will continue long into the future.

I leave EIN in exceptional hands!!  Piers has already taken over the EIN operation through this past month, ably supported by EIN’s ‘roving reporter’ and new Vice-President, Sanja Meegin.

I’d like to leave you almost….wasn’t that an Elvis song? with the following observation by Robert C. Gallagher:

‘Change is inevitable - except from a vending machine.’

On that note I wish all of you the best and until our paths cross again, it is Aloha from Nigel.

Marty Lacker's Collection Of Elvis Magazines: Through the years since Elvis Presley’s death, Marty Lacker, who was Elvis’ right hand man for a number of years and the co-best man at Elvis’ wedding has conversed with many fans over the years. Marty has always graciously answered fans questions about the 20 years he was close to Elvis and because of that accessibility online many fans have been sending Marty various publications and lots of news clippings about Elvis.
After reading them all, instead of throwing them away, for whatever reason, Marty has always just tossed them in a big box in his closet and basically has forgotten about them, that is until now.  There are many publications and news clippings and every one of them features stories and great pictures about Elvis and his life. They are dated from the 80’s through the 90’s and the beginning of the 2000’s.  In addition, most of them feature Elvis on the front cover in beautiful color and some are Black and White.
Marty has decided to offer them here on eBay so that some Elvis fan can enjoy this great collection.

These pictures have been reproduced from the original negatives of photos which were taken in 1956 but did not re-surface again until 2000. Only 1000 copies of each of the 10 photos were ever reproduced & the author/photographer has signed an agreement with Elvis Presley Enterprises declaring that no more than the original 1000 copies will ever be reproduced.

George David Weiss, 'Can't Help Falling in Love' composer, dies at 89: George David Weiss, 89, a songsmith whose chart-topping hits in the 1960s included 'Can't Help Falling in Love', 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' and 'What a Wonderful World' and endure as musical standards today, died Aug. 23 at his home near Oldwick, N.J. No cause of death was reported.
Many of Mr. Weiss's songs were performed by giants of the entertainment industry, including Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr., and some of his tunes have become memorably tied to their original singers.
His ballad "Can't Help Falling in Love," originally performed by Elvis Presley, peaked on the Billboard charts at No. 2 in 1962 and was featured on the soundtrack of the 1961 classic family film "Blue Hawaii."
In 1961, Mr. Weiss added the lyrics, "In the jungle, the mighty jungle," to a popular, infectious melody to create the No. 1 Billboard hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for the Tokens.

Convicted US Governor Blagojevich, Elvis Presley Fan!: A life-sized statue of Elvis Presley and a neon "Governor Blagojevich" sign were among the hot items available Thursday after a suburban Chicago storage facility evicted material being stored by Blagojevich's campaign fund.
The statue (right) sold for US$20,500. Other items included a $120 plaque rewarding Blagojevich for political leadership.
The former US governor was convicted this week of lying to the FBI. A federal judge declared a mistrial on the other charges against him.
Reports are that Blagojevich was a big Elvis fan and he was crazy about Nixon, too.

Lisa Marie Presley 'fires cleaners': Lisa Marie Presley has left Los Angeles for the more tranquil climes of the Kent countryside, in England, and has reportedly fired two cleaners at her English estate, after they refused to sign confidentiality agreements.
The Sun reports that the six-page document banned staff and their families from discussing any information relating to Michael Jackson's ex-wife and her property, including the decor and existence of pictures or momentos of Presley's family.
The cleaners were asked to sign the agreement following the newspaper's earlier reports that the 42-year-old and her husband Michael Lockwood were moving to the £8 million 11-bedroom mansion near Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
A friend of one of the fired cleaners said: "It was like they were being asked to sign the Official Secrets Act. It was way over the top and they felt it was a total infringement of their human rights.
"Staff could not speak to their husbands, wives or even their grandchildren about what they did. Anyone would think they had gone to work for MI6, not a pop star's ex-wife."

Elvis, and I, have left the building: Virgin's new 'Rockstar Service' offers ordinary holidaymakers the chance to act like a celebrity. Where better to start than Las Vegas?
The UK Guardian reports on a new Elvis holiday experience...>>> "Mid-song, on the back seat of a limousine in downtown Las Vegas, "Elvis Presley" has forgotten the words. He is also bleeding, steadily, from a dog bite on his right hand, and horribly aware of the threat the blood poses to his white polyester jumpsuit. Elvis is a man from Wyoming whose real name is Brad and, secretly, he prefers Van Halen. The car, which takes 10 minutes to turn a corner, smells of scared dog and sweat. This isn't how it was meant to be."

Red West Interview: Red West was one of Elvis' closest friends. He first met Elvis in High School and went on to work for Elvis as a bodyguard until 1976. Elvis and Red West became close friends when Red volunteered to help drive Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana around the southern US states for their early tours of 1955-1956.  Red West is also a talented composer and actor who still appears in award-winning movies.

In 1999 Red West was the main guest at the Elvis English Fan Club Convention where he opened up to fans like never before, revealing his true love for Elvis. It is certainly one of the longest and the best interviews with Red West - and at times devastatingly honest.

EIN now presents this fascinating interview for Elvis Week 2010.

‘Original Elvis Tribute’ show with Bobby Wood & Johnny Christopher: The ‘Original Elvis Tribute’ show will be returning in May 2011, and we will have several surprises for the European fans. We are proud to announce that legendary keyboard player BOBBY WOOD will be joining us this time. No doubt most of you already know that he was an integral part of the ‘American Sound Studios’ band, with whom Elvis recorded his finest albums FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS and BACK IN MEMPHIS, as well as hit-singles like “Suspicious Minds”, “In The Ghetto”, “Kentucky Rain” and “Don’t Cry Daddy”. It’s also quite an honour for us that Mr. Wood will be bringing his old buddy & ‘American Sound Studios’ associate,  JOHNNY CHRISTOPHER. Johnny played rhythm guitar for Elvis during the STAX sessions in ’73, and also wrote / co-wrote songs for him like “Always On My Mind”, “Mama Liked The Roses” (Johnny remembers Elvis crying when he first heard this song) and “If You Talk In Your Sleep”. Johnny Christopher will be singing his own songs at the shows, just like he did on the original demos for Elvis. These shows will mark the first time ever that he performs at an Elvis show, and it will also be his first visit to Europe. This time, the ‘Original Elvis Tribute’ will have a special Memphis ’69 / Stax ’73 theme, and we all believe that this is going to be our most exciting tour yet. Elvisly Yours Remembers The King: Sid Shaw of UK's Elvisly Yours sent us this message: On August 16th 2009 a documentary film was made about the Elvisly Yours Shop and our FREE Elvis Street Party. I gave the title of this Annual Event, “Maureen’s Day” in memory of my late, darling wife Maureen to raise money for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) who were so kind to Maureen during her battle with cancer. Linda Thompson - Interview Special: Linda Thompson was romantically involved with Elvis in the 1970s and, except for Priscilla, was probably the most import partner that Elvis ever had. She lived with Elvis at Graceland for four and a half years, from 1972 to 1976. When Elvis was admitted to Baptist Memorial Hospital for eighteen days in November 1973, Thompson stayed with him in the same room. The hospital bent its rules and supplied her with a cot.
Elvis' close friends have always stated that without Linda Thompson by his side an earlier death was a clear possibility.
As part of Elvis Week 2010, EIN presents an interview special with Linda Thompson - combining Alanna Nash's 2007 interview along with the longest interview Linda Thompson has ever done for CNN in 2002. Go here for this fascinating double-interview.

Elvis fan club & Lady Gaga entourage Tiff: Heated words flew between an Elvis fan club and Lady Gaga's entourage during a candlelight vigil Sunday night, on the eve of the 33rd anniversary of The King's death.
Viva Las Vegas Elvis Presley Club members confirmed on Monday that Lady Gaga and her followers wandered into the vigil during a ceremony in front of an Elvis statue in the Hilton hotel's valet area. The exchange happened about 8:30 p.m., as Lady Gaga, described as appearing "disheveled," and her camp were heading for their caravan of black Escalades after dining at Benihana at the Hilton, the site of Elvis' comeback.
Sue Laurenz, president of the fan club, who was delivering a remembrance at the time, said a female member of Lady Gaga's group asked, "What's this all about?" When told it was a vigil for Elvis, Laurenz said the person inquiring about the gathering said, "Oh, he's been dead for over 30 years. Get over it!"
Laurenz said a female member of the Elvis fan club "got into it" (verbally) with the Lady Gaga entourage member "because we're going to stand up for our man.
"Don't be dissing The King," added Laurenz.

I reached the Elvis fan who defended him, and she confirmed that she confronted the woman who made the offensive comment and told her, "Elvis has been around a long time, a lot longer than Lady Gaga or goo goo or whatever her name is."
Laurenz and the club member who scolded the Lady Gaga follower emphasized that "it was not Lady Gaga dissing us." Laurenz said the "Poker Face" singer was seen taking a photo with Elvis' statue in the background.
M.J. Dennis, an executive with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and a member of the fan club, said Lady Gaga was wearing a full-length red boa coat, huge sunglasses and black stiletto heels.
Lady Gaga was in town for a concert at the MGM Grand on Friday and spent many hours in the Palms recording studio over the weekend.
Lady Gaga's manager, Troy Carter, said, "The person (who sparked the disagreement) was not part of Gaga's entourage or directly affiliated with us."
The irony, said Laurenz, is that earlier this year Elvis and Lady Gaga were voted in an online poll as the two singers the respondents would most like to see perform a duet.

Yet Another New Elvis CD RipOff: Amazon is advertising the new 2 CD set 'Elvis 75th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION'  which supposedly "showcases his greatest hits across 2CD at a very attractive price. The King is dead, long live the King!" Presumably yet another Public Domain fifties compile, (no track list is given) the picture on the front is some lame ETA and not Elvis! One day after Elvis Week and EIN is already angry - Pathetic!

Tuesday 17 August 2010 - - ELVIS WEEK final departure - until next year

Remember 'The King' with Music: On August 16th 2010, we should remember all the good things about Elvis. We should be celebrating his amazing musical legacy as well as the happiness that he has brought into all our lives. Elvis touched the soul of every true fan and 33 years later those feelings still run deep, as demonstrated by the 10,000 fans who struggled last night against the 120F temperatures only because they needed to pay their respects to our great hero.
If Elvis Presley were alive today, he would be 75 years old. And though he would certainly be in his golden years, there is a chance that he still might be giving concerts, and that his golden voice - the best rock music has ever heard - would still be booming through arenas.

On this special day in 2010 music columnist Alan K. Stout explains why we should all Remember The King.

'Our Memories Of Elvis Vol. 3' New CD: From their publicity....  Exceptional is only one word to describe this new release of Victrola. A fortunate find of documents, acetates and previously released recordings made it possible to realise this album in a very good quality. We received help from the GravelRoad team. Again thank you without you guys it wouldn’t be the same.. Some tracks weren’t impressive but still a rare find. A great sample is the stereo version of Moody Blue from Joan Deary. The only versions released are sounding mono and what the lengthened last minute of the song is a thrill …Did you have that feeling too that the song shouldn’t end.. Other tracks are for sure just as exciting.
When you listen to the concept of 'Our Memories Volume 3' you’ll notice that all tracks have been carefully chosen by Deary. The song selection is carefully balanced, just listen to a normal release of 1970 and play something from the studio recording in 1976….. a different sound of the voice. Clearly they were busy mixing the tracks together to create an album. Because of the pureness of the recordings and some lacking of overdubbs it worked very well. The extra tracks are there to complete the loose ends. It gives a very nice inside view on the production process.
We are aware that some tracks might be out before but still in this way it is an experience just because it's a real album production and not a compilation of songs.
The 'Our Memories of Elvis' series and 'Guitar Man' in 1981 by Felton Jarvis were in many ways the last real albums produced by the original engineers. Yes they are reworked songs but it was a serious attempt to create an Album in the same way as if Elvis would be personally involved! That’s the major difference compared to the regular new releases.
We are fortunate to have some documentation and acetates available. We have 80% of the facts and when putting it together the pieces fitted precisely . Also the track listing was a big surprise, al tracks fall in prefect order as was shown on the original mock up of Our memories of Elvis volume 3.
Enjoy Our memories of Elvis Volume 3, “Unfinished Business”. It’s the last real Elvis studio album ever made but was never finished.

Sweltering Heat can't keep Elvis fans from Annual Vigil: As dusk settled over Memphis, a crowd estimated at 15,000 defied a 118-degree heat index to gather at the gates of Graceland for the annual candlelight vigil that concludes the 2010 Elvis Week festivities.
Anita Massey, 63, from Arlington, Texas, uses umbrellas to beat the heat outside the gates of Graceland. Massey arrived at 6 a.m. Sunday to be the first in line for the annual candlelight vigil honoring Elvis Presley.
Kevin Kern, public relations director of EPE noted that this year's attendance was average for the event.
"It was a tough year marketing-wise because there's not a big anniversary ending with a zero or a five," Kern said. "However, going by ticket sales to our other events this week, we were very pleased."
Both the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest on Friday and a screening of the newly restored film "Elvis on Tour" on Saturday brought nearly 2,000 people to the Orpheum theater each night.
"With the release of the film, along with his 75th birthday in January and the Elvis-themed cirque show opening in Las Vegas, Elvis has been all over the world this year," Kern said. And, as always, the world came to Memphis last week to pay tribute to "The King" or to just wrestle with its mysterious attraction to him.
"What's amazing is the love people have," he said. "A little girl came up to me and asked for an autograph. Then she gave me a big hug. I couldn't believe how wonderful and accepting the fans are."
Brandon Bird, 8, of Manhattan, Ill., has been a vigil attendee since he was 6 months old. Dressed in a blue satin jumpsuit and sweating alongside the professionals, he predicted: "When I get older, I'll probably look even more like Elvis."
His mother, Dawn Bird, comes to Graceland every year, as she has since his death. She considers the annual gathering a learning experience.
"You meet people from all over the world," she said. "He learns about rock and roll and music history, and it gives him something to talk about with his friends."
Brandon has shared his collection of Elvis memorabilia with students at his school.
"Elvis is the first king of rock and roll," he explained. "If there ever is a second one, Elvis will still be the first. I really miss him."

Elvis Memphis Auction Results: The Peabody auction held in Memphis by Heritage Auctions at the weekend selling Elvis Presley's personal memorabilia has raised $630,000. The jar of thousands of strands of hair collected by Elvis' barber sold to an unknown buyer for $16,680.
Presley's preferred personal hair colourist and stylist Homer M Gilleland collected the locks over years, and handed them over to a friend. Presley's quiff gathered international attention when he remarked, "Hair today, gone tomorrow" to the press after getting his famous first GI haircut.
The priciest items included a red ultrasuede shirt worn by Elvis, which was sold for $34,000, and a monogrammed cream-colored shirt that sold for $62,000.
Two concert-worn scarves sold for a combined $2,318. A set of concert-used handkerchiefs went for 732 dollars.
Presley's personal collection of single 45 rpms sold for $3,904 dollars.
Wedding and bridal shower photos of Elvis and wife Priscilla sold for nearly $6,000 dollars.
Personal letters from Elvis's relatives were also among the items auctioned, including a collection of letters from his estranged grandfather J.D. Presley ($US1,159) and from his aunt ($458).
The three-page real estate sales contract of Graceland signed "Elvis Aron Presley" fetched $39,000.
The singer's gold and diamond 18-carat Cameo ring, (right) with "Elvis" engraved against the backside of the cameo, sold for $32,500.
Presley's custom made gold trimmed sunglasses featuring lightning bolt logos sold for a $21,800, while his gun, a .22 Harrington and Richardson seven-shot revolver was snapped up for $10,700.
However, Elvis' beloved white grand piano expected to fetch $1 million, did not sell at all. The grand piano was bought second hand by Presley in 1957 and refinished in white with gold trim according to his personal specifications and under his direct supervision.

Ernst Jorgensen at Elvis Week: Ernst Jorgensen is no stranger to Memphis, but that doesn't mean he's grown accustomed to the city's August heat. "For a Scandinavian with blond hair and pale skin, it's very rough," says Jorgensen, with a chuckle. "But most people in Denmark would love to be in Memphis to celebrate Elvis, so I shouldn't complain."
The Danish-born Jorgensen, who serves as the director and caretaker of the Presley catalogue, will make his annual pilgrimage to the Bluff City to mingle with fans and longtime friends during Elvis Week. On Sunday, he'll appear at Graceland to present a preview of the forthcoming box set, The Complete Elvis Presley Masters, as well as several other related titles from the boutique Presley imprint FTD. (right) Ernst Jorgensen displays the master tape for the "Elvis is Back" album.
For nearly two decades, Jorgensen has been the key figure in the rebirth of the King's recorded legacy -- a now-thriving business that has helped restore Elvis' reputation as an artist and continues to feed Presley fans new and important product.
For Jorgensen, the current state of the Presley catalogue is far a cry from its nadir in the mid-'80s. "You have to remember the ridicule that was heaped upon Elvis after he died. Everybody searched for some darker story. It definitely wasn't hip to like Elvis at that time," says Jorgensen. "In the '80s we were so taken with ourselves and our current present, it wasn't time yet to duck back into history and examine things like Elvis or rock and roll. It took a decade for people to turn around and want to go in and re-explore."
At Elvis Week 2010 Jorgensen and his partner Roger Semon will unveil their most ambitious project to date, The Complete Elvis Presley Masters, which is due in mid-October (US$749 -go here for more info). More than three years in the making, the 30-CD box set features 711 chronological master recordings, as well as 103 additional tracks, plus a 240-page hardbound book. "It's a dream come true for a compilation producer and historian," says Jorgensen.
The other major release due this fall is Viva Elvis, the soundtrack to a Cirque du Soleil stage show in Las Vegas, akin to the Beatles' Love project, which will be released in November (and retail for $11.98). Produced by Erich van Tourneau, the music is a postmodern take on Presley that "re-imagines the King's own vocal performances in a broad variety of musical settings, from Delta blues to rockabilly, from raw soul to gospel, from Southern folk to Vegas pop, while incorporating elements of garage rock, punk, urban and hip-hop." Though he's a self-described purist, Jorgensen is enthusiastic about Viva Elvis. "I never thought that anything like what they've done could be done," he says. "They've taken the songs and explored them on an individual basis ... let's just say you need to hear it. All the fans of Elvis' music do."See Ernst Jorgensen & Roger Semon at the "Preview of The Complete Elvis Presley Masters and upcoming releases on the FTD label" 5pm Sunday, Elvis Lives Exhibit Space at Graceland Plaza. Admission is free.Go here to EIN's Ernst Jorgensen interviews & information.

'Our Memories Of Elvis Vol.3' new import release: After the big success of the 'Our Memories Vol.1 & 2' re-release the Victrola label follows with their new release 'Our Memories Of Elvis Vol.3'. This was a continuation of RCA producer Joan Deary's vision that offered fans more "pure Elvis". The main reason for the project was that there were many requests after Elvis death from fans complaining about the fact that Elvis' voice was buried under the many instruments and Felton Jarvis' overdubs. The original 'Our Memories Of Elvis Vol.3' tracklisting was suggested but the project was cancelled and the mixing never finished. In 2010 Victoral finally offers the original thirteen album tracks plus ten bonus 'Rare or Unreleased' tracks. Some selections are undubbed masters while some are special remixes of the overdubbed Masters.
Tracks include; Hurt, Shake A Hand, Promised Land, Heart Of Rome, If You Don't Come Back, For Ol' Time Sake, It's A Matter Of Time, Love Coming Down, Woman Without Love and Moody Blue.

Elvis Week Opening Show cancelled due to Rain!: Donny Edwards (right) backstage at the Levitt Shell after Shake Rattle & Roll at the Shell, was cancelled due to rain. The idea was to replicate Elvis Presley's 1955 concert at the Overton Shell, only this time it would be Elvis tribute artist Donny Edwards and the Change of Habit Band at the Levitt Shell, doing the key songs Elvis did, 'That's All Right' and 'Blue Moon of Kentucky'. "That would have been followed by another 45 minutes of rockin' out plus a screening of 'Jailhouse Rock,' " Edwards said. The storm was so sudden that a few dozen fans had already gathered. But even if not a single note was played, there was still something for the hardy attendees, a tour of the Shell's backstage and picture/autograph quality time with Edwards. The event was the official kickoff to Elvis Week and it was a first time effort as well. Graceland had partnered with the Alzheimer's Association and Pink Caddy Entertainment to do the benefit, the idea of Kari Lugo whose grandmother had Alzheimer's and was a big Elvis fan. Refunds for the concert can be processed through the Alzheimer's Association at 565-0011.

'Elvis On Tour' DVD Review: In 1972, Elvis was still riding high from the commercial and critical rebirth that started with the ’68 Comeback Special and continued with his return to live performances the following year. His previous documentary, Elvis: That’s The Way It Is was a success, showing the King at the height of his physical and vocal ability. Hoping to recapture some of that magic, directors Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge followed Presley on his 15 cities in 15 nights 1972 tour, the results of which became Presley’s 33rd and final film, Elvis On Tour. Long out of print on VHS, it makes its DVD and Blu-ray debut with this 2010 upgraded release. Blog Critic General Jabba reviews the new DVD and raises some good points.

Bobby Wood & Johnny Christopher In Europe: The ‘Original Elvis Tribute’ show will be returning in May 2011, and we will have several surprises for the European fans. For booking a show or other info, please visit our website: www.elvisnews.dk Photo: Elvis and Bobby Wood at American Sound Studios, 1969

Ed Leek article in Record Collector: In the September issue of Record Collector magazine, Maurice Colgan mourns the passing of Ed Leek, the man who helped Elvis make his very first recording.... The death of Captain Edwin S Leek Junior, on 4 June 2010, made the obituary column of a newspaper in Florida, USA, but failed to make an impact elsewhere in the media. (EIN Note - It was reported on this website!)
Nevertheless – for good reason – news of Leek’s death is now circulating on the internet. Ed Leek, as he was known to his friends, played a very important part in the early history of Elvis Presley’s astounding career in popular music.
According to Ed, it was he who gave the shy and evasive Elvis four dollars to go and record two songs at the Memphis Recording Service, later to become world famous as Sun Studios. Ed’s idea was to get the record played on radio shows, so Elvis’ voice would be heard by the general public on the Tennessee airwaves.
Legend has it that, eventually, Elvis acquiesced to Ed’s taunting and, still toting his first guitar, hesitantly entered the Memphis Recording Service one day in August 1953. The studios were – and are – a far cry RCA’s. They’re surprisingly small, barely furnished and claustrophobic in the ferocious Memphis heat.
Marion Keisker, Sam Phillips' assistant, was on hand to witness Elvis’ far from confident entrance. To put the 18-year-old at his ease, Marion engaged Elvis in conversation, asking him what kind of songs he sang.
"All kinds", was Elvis' reply.
"Well, whom do you sound like?" Marion tried to probe.
"I don't sound like nobody", was Elvis' prophetic answer.
Elvis then recorded two sentimental slow ballads which had been hits in the 40s: 'My Happiness', and 'That's When Your Heartaches Begin'. (Photo Above: See the original Elvis acetate with typed label)
Afterwards, Marion made a note of his name and telephone number and added, "Good ballad singer." By the time she turned, Elvis had already left the building.
In order to hear his own voice on the recording, Elvis had to play it at his friends' homes, as the Presleys were too impoverished to possess record player in those days.
On the other hand, Ed Leeks' background was middle class and his parents and grandparents were making a good living as medical doctors and they owned a very modern phonograph....

'ELVIS - By Those Who Knew Him Best' Biography to be Republished: A book originally released in 1994 by Rose Clayton and Dick Heard is being reissued later this year by Virgin Books. Featuring the words from those closest to Elvis, EIN thoroughly recommends this 2010 re-issue. Previously called "Elvis Close Up" the title has now been updated to "ELVIS - By Those Who Knew Him Best" Publisher announcent: "Elvis died on 16 August 1977. He was just 42 years of age and had been the first global superstar of the rock 'n' roll era: the King. An eager world followed his every appearance, Flocked to his movies and bought his records in the millions. But what was he like as a colleague, as a friend, as a brother, as a lover? Imagine Elvis's relatives, friends, musical colleagues and business associates gathering to remember him and swap stories about him. In this close- up and intimate oral biography, that's just what nearly one hundred and fifty of them do, many of them speaking for the first time."  (Page number: 448; ISBN: 0753522829)

"The Elvis Mob" on Australian TV this week: The documentary "The Elvis Mob" on the Australian cable Stvdio channel this week gets a great press write up. Recommended in both quality newspapers The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald. Reviewed as "The enthralling documentary in which Elvis Presley's long-time entourage reassembles to share their recollections of their debauched decades with the King. Sex, drugs and hedonism in general was par for the course but even the most louche of Elvis's inner circle blanched when he took up with the then 14-year-old Priscilla. A fascinating story of the surreal, isolated world fame painted Elvis and his cronies into, it's worth catching." Throughout Australia on the Stvdio channel, Friday August 13th 9.30pm.

'The King's Ransom' Las Vegas Museum on the move: The King's Ransom Elvis Museum in Las Vegas has recently closed so that it can move to a better location. The museum which was located at the Imperial Palace since 2009 featured a superb collection of Elvis owned and Elvis related items. It closed last wednesday and is now moving to a new location, still in Vegas, that will be more convenient for the fans.

Bud Glass has told EIN, "The Imperial Palace run was very successful, and according to our curator, Jimmy Velvet everyone who came through raved about the exhibit.  This included several celebrities, including Steve Binder, who produced Elvis' famous 68' Comeback Special for NBC.  The Imperial Palace asked us to reconsider and stay, but we have several offers in venues that would be in the best interest of the museum and better showcase our collection for the fans from around the world to enjoy.
We will be re-opening soon in a state-of-the-art museum that will also include several other incredible surprises for the fans who come through.  We will be sure to make a special announcement with more details in the near future.  We at The King's Ransom Museum are very excited about the future and all it holds."

This is inline with FTD's original policy and one of their defined purposes which was to help halt the proliferation of Elvis Bootlegs. (Image right is not the FTD cover art!) "Suspected Bootleg Operation Uncovered" was also a recent news item from EPE. Where in a major sting operation in Los Angeles, Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) has filed charges and is actively working with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department who have recently conducted raids and have uncovered a major bootleg and fraudulent product operations of unauthorized Elvis Presley merchandise. Further details cannot be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation, but EPE is making it very clear that be it back room businesses, suburban garages, or via the Internet, they will not tolerate the gross and illegal abuse of the name, image and likeness of Elvis Presley.

ELVIS - THE HIT THAT SAVES THE DAY – THE CHICAGO CHRONICLES VOLUME 1
14.10.1976, Thursday (8:30 P.M.) Chicago, IL, Chicago Stadium
When Elvis stepped onstage Thursday night at the Chicago Stadium, the audience was in for a pleasant surprise. In a phone conversation with old friend Red West, Presley revealed that his painful colon condition had gone into remission. Thanks to this fortuitous circumstance, Elvis looked better than he had for several years. He was decked out in his Inca Gold Leaf suit, which had not been worn since 1974. And he gave a far better show than he had on earlier dates that year. This time he interacted with his audience a lot more, treating the proceedings with far less formality. The fans certainly enjoyed the chance to see a little bit more of his personality.

Prince Albert of Monaco visits Graceland: Prince Albert of Monaco, son of the late actress Grace Kelly, and fiancé Charlene Wittstock are vacationing in the US this week and paid a visit to American royalty today when they toured Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion in Memphis, home to the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The couple visited Presley’s historic home which is a pop culture time capsule, decorated in traditional American styling’s from the 50s, 60s and 70s. During their tour, they also paid their respects to Presley at his grave located in Graceland’s Meditation Garden. Prior to the tour of Graceland, the couple was treated to a traditional Southern meal which included Bar-B-Q, as Memphis is known as the Bar-B-Q capital of the world.
When asked about why Memphis and Graceland were selected as part of the itinerary for an American vacation tour, Prince Albert of Monaco commented, “If you’re on a summer holiday, you’ve got to come at this time of year. I’ve always wanted to come to Graceland. Charlene and my friends wanted to be here today for this visit, Elvis touched our lives as well and the lives of so many people. We wanted to pay our respects and see what this place was all about.”
Following the tour of Graceland, Prince Albert of Monaco went on to praise Elvis for his contributions to the entertainment industry and charitable causes. “Elvis was an extraordinary figure of his time and our time. His legacy was tremendous in terms of the music he created, his films, and in terms of him as an entertainment personality. The generosity that he showed toward others is simply remarkable and I think it’s these aspects of his character, his persona, that make him such a special person.”

As the Blog notes, "Elvis has been dead for 32 years and I have been alive for 32 years, born and bred on the King. This is my year of living Elvisly." Late last year I set about blogging all the Elvis events and Elvis cultural fall-out that crossed my path. The idea was that to examine how Elvis 'lives on', and has become pervasive, particularly on this side of the pond (I'm British and live in Oxford). It's brought up themes of class, nationality, sexuality, tribute artists, death and finances. Elvis is everywhere! Join me - lonesome cowboys, long-legged girls, on the mystery train, on the gravel road - on a year-long exploration of Elvisness...

Viva Elvis defies expectations: It's easy to believe that Vegas may be hitting the point of Cirque du Fatigue. With a mind-boggling six productions playing at the major resorts, you could almost hear the sighs when it was announced that a seventh would be opening at Aria Las Vegas. And then when they said it would feature the music of Elvis Presley, there may have been some giggles.
But Viva Elvis defies those expectations and winds up being a very entertaining night at the theater. While not the best Cirque show in town (that distinction goes to KA or Mystere) and not exactly ground breaking, it may very well be the lightest, most accessible, and most outright fun one of the bunch.

Set up as a retrospective of sorts of The King's life and legend, the production features many of Elvis' biggest hits and quite a few of his minor ones. Some are remixed versions of the original and others are performed by cast members, but with a catalogue of songs like this it's virtually impossible to go wrong. And the ways in which Cirque brings the songs to life through dance, acrobatic and gymnastic stunts, set pieces, and video to examine a moment in Elvis' history can be a lot of fun.

The show opens with "Blue Suede Shoes" as a live band pumps up Elvis' original vocals and the cast, dressed as '50s era teens, dances and twirls around a pink Cadillac and a giant blue suede shoe. Again, not terribly inventive but definitely high energy and a good way to kick off the proceedings. It starts to get really interesting with a number that is meant to represent Elvis and Jesse Garon, his twin brother that died during childbirth. An Alicia Keys-esque singer floats in with her piano singing the mournful "One Night With You" as identically dressed aerialists jump and cavort on a giant guitar suspended in a starry sky. It's a nice, emotional moment. This seques into a superhero themed "Gotta Lotta Lovin'" where costumed acrobats seem to fly through the air and climb the walls with the help of some well-positioned trampolines. An Elvis in the army section includes a beautifully rendered "Heartbreak Hotel" with a guitarist and a vocalist doing it ballad style while video and photos of the young singer joining the military and going off for duty play overhead. Then the energy pumps up with a basic training themed "Return to Sender" complete with gymmastics and Stomp-style dance. Other notable moments include an homage to Elvis in the movies, a floating aerialist pas-de-deux to "Are You Lonesome Tonight," some really astounding rope tricks representing Elvis in his iconic gunslinger pose, and a prison break "Jailhouse Rock." And the couple performing a fierce and passionate modern dance interpretation of "Caught in a Trap" are absolutely stunning. The re-interpretations of Elvis' music were fascinating. "All Shook Up" is performed as a gospel rave-up with a choir and tent-revival style dancing; "It's Now or Never" is remixed into a sultry rhumba with performers twirling on poles. Elvis purists may be outraged, but to the rest of us it's a fascinating new way to hear his music. There are a few missteps. An actor portraying Colonel Tom Parker acts as a narrator and it's not only unneccessary but it breaks the rhythm in a few places. Also, the section about Elvis and Priscilla's wedding, with a woman on a giant wedding cake while roller-skate wearing grooms zoom around at the base is just kind of odd. But by the end when you see video of Elvis' comeback concerts in Vegas along with an entire stage full of Elvis impersonators and showgirls in traditional headdresses, it's impossible not to cheer.

And that's the key, here, I think. Viva Elvis is a celebration of Mr. Presley's life, career, and music and instead of challenging the audience with some of the more outre avant garde theater that Cirque is known for, it asks the audience to come along and enjoy the ride. The show is inviting and accessible and just wants you to have fun, much like The King himself did. If that's not a fitting tribute, I don't know what is. (Review, Source: vegas4visitors.com)

'You Give Me Fever' - new Spankox Remix: 33 years after Elvis left the building his 1960 song 'Fever' is released as a new rapped-up single. Based on Elvis’ classic Fever, the new song features the original voice of the King in a whole new context, with new rap vocals, new female vocals and an ultra-contemporary arrangement. You Give Me Fever is produced and co-written by Agostino Carollo Spankox, who in 2008 also produced the third official Presley’s remix released by Sony Music, Baby Let’s Play House. Elvis’ You Give Me Fever is scheduled to be released on Aug. 4, 2010 as exclusive digital download from the Apple iTunes Store and on CD single on Aug.16, 2010, day of the 33rd anniversary of Elvis’ demise. Both the digital download and the CD edition of the single includes 3 versions of the song: a radio edit, an extended mix and a ringtone version. “You Give Me Fever continues the revolution and is destined to deliver Elvis to a whole new generation of music fans in a cool and compelling way” said Mark Johnson, Brand Partnership Manager of ELPR, Inc. “We're always wary of anything that involves altering Elvis' master recordings in any way, but You Give Me Fever is simply mind-blowing. Elvis is a great and constant source of inspiration for the creativity of other artists, and this is an outstanding example of that.” - Go here to the YouTube version.

'Elvis On Tour' cinema FAN REVIEWS: MORE UPDATES & Reviews - with lots of your comments. The special July 29 US screening of 'Elvis On Tour' got mixed reactions from fans. EIN has been sent reviews suggesting it was a "Great Night Out, seeing Elvis back on the big screen and with an excited audience" to the opposite "A Total Disappointment - just the same as the original and this one has nothing new".
Overall it seemed to depend on fan's expectations.
Some fans found the making of EOT documentary film that proceeded it interesting with "insightful interviews with Jerry Schilling and Andrew Solt" while other were let down as "There was no Unseen footage as promised" and only general interviews.
As most Elvis fans realise there is a wealth of stunning EOT material that has not been officially released and this was the perfect place for it.
The best comment has to be "How nice to see LIVE ELVIS Elvis on the big screen and with an appreciative crowd as it doesn't happen that often nowadays".

'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' New CD: Coming soon is the second volume of Straight Arrow's special mini-series focusing on "two-mic ambience live recordings": 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' (SA/SP 2010-02-02). This CD will feature the Wednesday, February 21, 1973 Dinner Show, which is previously uncirculated -- no known audience or soundboard recording has surfaced in over 37 years! The concert was taped by the same fan, using the same equipment and settings, who captured the February 15, 1973 Dinner Show heard on our first volume, "Faded Love." This means that the sound quality is just as good. However, this time around there is huge difference in Elvis' performance. Whereas "FADED LOVE" gave the listener an unusual set, as Presley was under the weather and left the stage for a stretch, here he is fully recovered and vocally strong.
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" features a fairly standard repertoire for the period, but the majority of the material is performed very well. Among the highlights is a knockout performance of "What
Now My Love," from false start to reprise! Other impressive numbers include "I'm Leavin'" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me."
As with Volume 1, this release will be presented in a cool-looking digipak, with relevant information and rare photos. If you enjoyed "FADED LOVE", you will love this one, too. To be released early August.Go here to EIN CD News for full details & Tracklist

SHOWTIME! - FTD Review: In December 1976 Elvis performed a short mini-tour of five cities ending with the fabulous New Year’s Eve concert in Pittsburgh. Unlike the majority of Elvis' very lackadaisical concerts from earlier in the year he was really ready to rock. Elvis' new girlfriend Ginger Alden, only 20 years old - was on tour with him. These December 1976 concerts would be our last glimpse of that fabulous musical beacon that shone so brightly back in August 1969 in Las Vegas - and both the Dallas and Birmingham concerts are two Must-Have performances that all true Elvis fans should own. Having previously been out on bootleg FTD manages to upgrade both concerts and gives us two for the price of one..

EIN's Piers Beagley spins them one more time to check out this new double-CD pack - So are they really worth buying again?

Elvis Week 2010 Schedule

"VIVA ELVIS" – CD to be released November 2010: Legacy Recordings in cooperation with EPE and Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil proudly announces the release of Viva ELVIS - The Album, a 21st century celebration of Elvis and his music, featuring the voice of the King in a whole new context. Viva ELVIS - The Album will be available everywhere this November.
The undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley remains one of the most iconic and powerful forces in popular culture. "Before Elvis," said John Lennon, "there was nothing."
After Elvis, the world looked and sounded different. With a swivel of his hips and the power of his voice, Elvis broke down barriers and shattered the status quo, revolutionizing the worlds of music, film and fashion while signaling a seismic shift in gender, class, race, and generational relationships. The Elvis revolution continues with Viva ELVIS - The Album.
The postmodern studio masterwork invokes the spirit and essence of Elvis from a contemporary perspective while furthering the revolutionary impulses of Elvis' sound. Viva ELVIS - The Album re-imagines the king’s own vocal performances in a broad variety of new musical settings.
This new sound echoes Elvis' own versatility and ability to master all music genres, from Delta blues to rockabilly, from raw soul to gospel, from Southern folk to Vegas pop, while incorporating elements of garage rock, punk, urban and hip-hop.
"Viva ELVIS is a tantalizing musical experience," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "It's so creative and so contemporary, it effortlessly places Elvis in a current context that appeals to fans of all ages and all kinds of music.  There's a freshness, a newness to these songs that grabs you and shakes you and ultimately testifies to the remarkable artist Elvis remains to this very day."
"What would the songs of Elvis be like if he were doing them for the first time today?," asks the album's producer and arranger Erich van Tourneau, Musical Director and Arranger for Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil. "We set out to evoke the soul and spirit of Elvis Presley while building a bridge between his music and future generations of fans."
Working with tens of thousands of samples of Elvis’ voice, van Tourneau and Bombardier often wove several sequences and sounds into the same songs, sometimes changing details such as the key and tempo. In creating Viva ELVIS - The Album, van Tourneau was looking to accentuate and boost the emotional charge of the songs with the incorporation of ragga, punk or hip-hop elements into classic recordings. In all cases, however, the goal was to respect and understand the essence of the original recordings.
In celebration of all eras of Elvis' musical genius, Viva ELVIS - The Album includes songs from Elvis’ rise to fame in the ‘50s, his movie soundtracks, his triumphant return to the stage in the “’68 Special,” and his ground-breaking appearances in Las Vegas. "Burning Love," "Suspicious Minds," "Blue Suede Shoes" and "It's Now or Never" are among the songs that have been re-imagined and transformed for Viva ELVIS - The Album.
The first opportunity to hear a sample from this ground-breaking album will take place during Elvis Week in Memphis on Saturday, August 14, during the event “Conversations on Elvis.”
Viva ELVIS - The Album is a 21st century venue for rock's first and biggest superstar. The King's Music Lives!
