by Rich Koslowski* Top Shelf Productions, USA, 2005, Softcover, 264 pages, ISBN: 1891830651 "...when they stop talking about you, you're dead." - Elvis
With more than a passing nod to the ideas of "Elvis cult", and the "Elvis alive" underground and its famous masked man, Orion, The King intertwines a wonderful thread of mystery with commentary on how the media shapes, and can be used to shape, public opinion. "The King" also includes a sketchbook section which allows the reader to experience the raw visuals before they are transformed into their more engaging story frame. It is surprising that the graphic novel form hasn't been used more often to present variations on the Elvis story. Regardless, "The King" is a first-rate addition to its genre. "The King" is not a book for younger readers. Its occasional strong language and visual nudity are strictly adult themes. Verdict: If you haven't yet experienced the delights of a graphic novel, The King is the perfect starting point. Dare to indulge yourself in a different Elvis world. A meaty narrative combined with an adult sensibility and strong, clean 2-color visuals means The King well and truly takes care of business. Read, savour, and enjoy.
