'The Elvis Files Magazine'

EIN checks out the September 2014, Issue #9

The seven Elvis Files volumes 1-7 are a very ambitious project by Erik Lorentzen that will carefully document almost every single day of Elvis' life from 1954 to 1977, covering everything from what he wore on stage, to who he met, rare interviews, candid photos and newly discovered images.

Not only is Erik Lorentzen releasing his beautiful Elvis Files books but now an associated quarterly magazine is available!

His collection of Elvis articles and exclusive photos is so extensive that he has more than can fit into his books.

EIN checks out the September 2014 - Issue #9 of this new magazine below ...

Published September 2014, issue 9 of The Elvis Files Magazine.

The Elvis Files magazine issue nine came out back in September 2014 but due to EIN’s participation with the release of ‘Ultimate Elvis’ somehow we missed our look at this very fine magazine.

While I have really enjoyed every issue of The Elvis Files magazine so far, issue nine is an absolute CRACKER. Packed with great photographs, plenty I had not seen before, and interesting articles this was one of the best of the series so far. And I'm not just saying this because it contains an article that I contributed about the Judy Spreckels.

The magazine kicks off with an article from 1957 “What Elvis thinks of his fans” and along with some cool photos features some very interesting comments including…

“Sometimes the kids who are having a lot of fun can be dangerous, though. In their anxiety to see Elvis, they change from a receptive group of teen-aged girls to a mob. When that happens - and it often does - the actual physical danger that someone will be hurt constitutes a real problem. If Elvis stays around and tries to sign all the autographs, the kids become frantic in the fear that they will be missed and start a stampede. If he tries to get away as soon as possible, he incurs resentment and anger and - generally -even more milling, crowding, yelling and pushing. He frankly enjoys all the curiosity and is well aware that it is a gauge of his popularity.

"I guess I've got to admit that those little gals do bug me sometimes," Elvis explains, "but I'm going to go on meeting my people as long as I have the strength because, as I see it, you're only in business as long as they're aggravating you."

My article on “Judy Spreckels and Elvis” follows and here Erik Lorentzen has found some brilliant images of Elvis and Judy to go with this article that follows their close friendship from 1956 all the way through to Elvis name checking her on stage in 1974.

Three articles follow looking more at the recording side of Elvis's career.  There is an article with the multitalented session musician Charlie McCoy plus a Rolling Stone interview with Chet Atkins..

Chet Atkins: Well, I hired the musicians. This was for "Heartbreak Hotel" and "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You." I set the session for the afternoon and Elvis came in with pink trousers with blue stripes and he was real nice.
He was singing and split his pants. One of his boys went to get him another pair and he threw the split pair in the corner. A girl who was working for the Methodist Publishing Company in the same building asked me what to do with the pants and I told her you better hang onto them, that boy's gonna be famous. She said “naw” and six months later there she was on TV's "I've Got a Secret" with Elvis's pants!”

There is also an interview with songwriter Paul Evans that raises some very interesting comments.

Paul Evans: Generally speaking, you'd go to Hill and Range - they had the publishing - and for some reason they also took back a third of the writing credit which went to Elvis, who, by the way who was never a member of ASCAP or BMI, the two collection agencies for radio and television performances. It went into the pot. I don't understand it. Maybe it was a show of power by the Colonel? I don't even know if Elvis was aware of this. What little I know of him, he would probably had said, 'No, you can't do that to the writers.' I mean why would he want to do that? He was making enough money.
One day a lawyer at Hill and Range cornered me. He shoved a paper into my face and said, ’You sign this paper. If you don't sign this paper, Paul, I will see to it that you will never get an Elvis record.' That really did scare me. On that paper there was every writer that I knew - including the Kirshner crowd. Everyone signed agreeing that whenever Elvis recorded one of their songs that they would give a third back.

Other articles included are
-    Elvis's 1969 Press conference
-    June 28, 1957 Russwood Park – did Elvis sing at the show?
-    Elvis 1972 White Two Piece suit
-    A Touch Of Hutch (actor Will Hutchins,
image above right)
-    Elvis and actor Mike Mazurki

As always super-fan Elaine Christan continues her exclusive look at various meetings with Elvis, this time September and late 1970. The article includes some nice stories and is combined with some great candid photos.

“This night was only a few weeks since Elvis had completed his first concert tour since 1957 (not counting the Astrodome as a "tour".) Judy had an article from the Detroit show that she wanted to show Elvis because it was a great review, full of praise for him and his show. She handed him the article and he was not only interested - he read the whole thing.

I love the look on his face as he's reading about his own show. After reading it he handed it back to Judy, signed a few more autographs and then the car drove past the gate and Elvis went inside the house. Only a minute or so later one of the guys came back out of the house to ask Judy if Elvis could have the article. I thought it was funny that Elvis didn't ask for it himself. Judy really meant to keep the article but she couldn't bring herself to say "no" to Elvis.

Luckily Mom had taken the newspaper information from the article so we could send for the photo they had printed with it. Most newspapers would sell you the photos they took. Usually the fee was $10 (which was a lot in 1970). We sent for the photo so you can see the picture Elvis was looking at in this photo of him reading about himself.”

Finally the most interesting article"I've Never Been Strung Out In My Life" is the fascinating article from May Mann about Elvis's “Desert Storm” closing show in September 1974 - . Having recently read Anne E Nixon’s new book (where she also provided her personal positive review of this concert) this article again proves what different viewpoints and opinions there can be about this extraordinary emotional rollercoaster ride of a show.

Read this small excerpt and see how it reveals a completely different show from what we know..

"Elvis' lively happy mood was completely contagious. Everyone caught up in his high happy spirit began to clap time and laugh and beat time and just have one wonderful good time, because Elvis was having the best time of all time. "This is my life's blood up here on stage, I love it, I love every minute of it," he said.

Some recalled that last year when he and Priscilla were divorcing, Elvis was so unhappy and beside himself one night, he ran off stage after twenty minutes, too upset to continue. Now the wide contrast with this new open carefree Elvis - the place was falling apart!
"All those stories about why Priscilla and I split up," he said, "it was because of my career, I was away so long. But Priscilla and I will always love and care for and about each other with our daughter." Then he said, not mentioning the mind boggling settlement of two million dollars he gave Priscilla, "gave her a couple of things too after the divorce." There was nothing more anyone could want to know.

His dramatic interpretation of "Big Boss Man”, “Let Me Be There" was moving and memorable and even brought tears, "You Gave Me a Mountain" was another.
When the curtain finally went down, the people stood applauding for five minutes. Elvis came out and motioned that the curtain be raised again and held. Then he went to the apron of the stage and shook hands with everyone joyfully, purposefully and freely. He signaled security guards away to be left on his own. Everyone loved Elvis more than ever.

In the lobby everyone stood around and talked about it; talked about his release from that Ivory Tower, his now new way - his openness, his renewed vitality, the happiness he radiates - and quite remarkable too, his ability and his diplomacy to have a new girlfriend and his ex-wife and his child all happily together sitting in a booth out front.”

What an incredible alternate view of the well-known emotional evening that we all thought we knew and understood. Interested fans need to read this article in full.

Finally the back page photo - and what a cracker of Elvis in glorious onstage action - and what that's swinging down his trouser leg!

You can certainly see how the girls were hypnotised by Elvis’ amazing 1950 powerful performances.

You need to see this as a full-page photo, and not a mini scan!

Overall Verdict: Fans who want to read more articles that explore Elvis's legacy combined with great photographs and superb quality should not Miss out this excellent serious magazines.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 7' Review: The march issue, once again featuring Elvis stories and new unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
One of the treats of this issue is that there are several articles and interviews featuring Elvis himself that capture him in some candid moments and thoughts.
- Elvis At The Shrine - One of the key articles in this issue and an impressive 12 pages are dedicated to Elvis' live appearances in Los Angeles and boy there are some stunning images of Elvis here.
- Elvis Presley "I’ll never do it again"- a fascinating article about Elvis being so disgruntled with being forced to appear in that tuxedo on the Steve Allen show.
- "Why Do Canadian Youngsters Worship Elvis Presley?"
- Recently discovered the dress rehearsal documents from King Creole.
Once again Elaine Christan, daughter of super fan Virginia Coons, supplies some good articles including some candid photographs from 1969 and even a positive view of November 1976.
- 'Elvis talks To Roxy' - a delightful interview from 1960.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.
Go HERE as EIN checks the new issue- with plenty of rare photos.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 6' Review: The December Issue of the Elvis Files magazine sadly got stuck in the Christmas post but what a treat it is! Once again featuring Elvis stories and new unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
The key article in the magazine is a stunning 20-page feature on Elvis’ last concerts of the fifties in Honolulu, Hawaii. Written by Elvis expert James Roy I found it the most interesting and well-researched story published by the Elvis Files Magazine so far.
In another feature Lorentzen has also discovered seventeen fabulous new photos of Elvis in Jacksonville Florida from February 1956, showing Elvis and the Colonel hanging out and making surreptitious arrangements at the hotel.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Super fan, Virginia Coons Beverly Hills 'Spring 1969'
- Love Me Tender, unseen photos
- It’s A Miracle Elvis Is A Star - by former schoolteacher
- Elvis Cracked Up in Anaheim, November 30, 1976
- Elvis’and Danny Thomas’ complete interview

Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 5' Review: The September Issue of the Elvis Files magazine once again features Elvis stories and new unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
The amazing discovery this time is the twenty-one never-before-published photographs of Elvis in November 1956 with Alis Lesley, the ‘Female Presley’.
Other features this time include Lloyd Shearer "How Elvis Changed His Public Image" and the important 1957 African-American JET magazine article about Elvis and racism.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Shelley Fabares & Elvis
- Interview with William A Graham (director of ‘Change Of Habit’)
- ‘Elvis My Best Man’ Interview with George Klein
- Super fan, Virginia Coons Meeting Elvis

Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 4' - Review: Published last month, the June Issue of the Elvis Files magazine once again features Elvis stories, as well as new unpublished Elvis photos, that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books. EIN has been overseas recently so we've been running a little late with reviews.
Favourite features this time include 'Elvis attending Nancy Sinatra’s 1970 opening night' and ten years earlier 'Elvis’ April 1960 train journey to L.A.' - plus the ten pages dedicated to Elvis and Debra Paget.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis Live October 1976 at Fort Wayne
- Elvis Live October 1957 in LA and San Francisco.
- Elvis and his famous luxury gold Cadillac.
- Hedda Hopper "He is the Greatest Phenomenon"
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

Go HERE as EIN investigates the new June issue- with plenty of rare Elvis photos.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 3' - Review: Released March 2013, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
The real score here is of course that Erik Lorentzen has managed to get hold of Frank Powolny’s 1956 September photographs - and there are plenty here over twenty good size shots - and in great quality too.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- A look at Elvis and Mary Ann Mobley
- Rare photos from 'Follow That Dream'.
- Personal fan stories of meeting Elvis
- Elvis Gospel in his 68 Maroon suit
- Ann-Margret: The Girlfriend Who Isn’t One.

Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine Issue 2' - Review: Released last month, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
I have seen little about this December magazine publication elsewhere on the Internet and yet I found it another excellent magazine, and for me even more interesting than the first issue.
The real treat here is Lorentzen’s personal story of meeting Elvis and visiting Graceland, as well as lots of exclusive on-stage photos taken during that 1975 tour by the Norwegian fan club.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis and The Martial Arts – by Master Kang Ree.
- "The World of Elvis Jumpsuits" – Featuring the unusual Black PasSaRyu Karate jacket from August/ September 1974.
- Elvis and The DIG magazine. Four great pages of candids from April 1956
- A rare Elvis Interview from 1964.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.
Go HERE as EIN investigates the new publication - with plenty of rare Elvis photos.
