Published March 2014, issue 7 of The Elvis Files Magazine.

Stuck in the Easter post, Issue #7 of the Elvis Files magazine only arrived at EIN's post-box last week.

Once again Erik Lorentzen has managed to find a bunch of new, previously unpublished photos and Issue 7 features some marvellous articles that never made it to his Elvis Files books. And what a CRACKER of a front cover shot!

One of the treats of this issue is that there are several articles and interviews featuring Elvis himself that capture him in some candid moments and thoughts.

Elvis Presley "I’ll never do it again"- is a fascinating October 1956 article about Elvis being so disgruntled with being forced to appear in that tuxedo on the Steve Allen show.

"He was unhappy, dejected  and disgruntled. He had just come off the stage of the big Steve Allen show."
It includes...

"Before the screen test I never thought I could act. I was never in a play in school or anything. I never thought I could." Acting brought back Elvis' thoughts to his act. He lowered his heavy black eyelashes and said softly: "I want to do everything to keep people liking me. I don't want any more bad writeups." His handsome John Barrymore-like face took on more character and his voice grew stronger as he again returned to his own defense. "I took my style from religion. When I was a kid we - mom, dad and me - went to a lot of all night religious sings. I don't go so often now because I can't. At the sings there are quartets who just stand up straight and sing. And nothing happens. Then there's this one group, The Statesmen -they're led by a preacher - they get with the hymns. They move. The whole place rocks with 'em. It sends chills up and down. I've tried to copy them. Some day soon I'm going to record an album of religious songs, too, probably with mom and dad."
In the meanwhile Elvis plans to go on with his own style and rock and roll. "If TV won't let me sing my way I won't be on TV."

Interestingly there is also a reply article penned by Steve Allen himself about how nice Elvis was on his show.

"Why Do Canadian Youngsters Worship Elvis Presley?" - Another marvellous article from June 1957 focusing on teenagers and in particular a 14-year-old Carol Vanderleck. Again Elvis’ quotes are very interesting as is the attitude of the author. And how fascinating it is that in 1957 Elvis can look so camp in some photos- as above.

.... In the press-lashed furor that preceded his coming, many adults would have picked Carol Vanderleck as an outstanding and misguided victim of a craze that has been labelled disgusting, immoral and stimulating to delinquency. But in the wake of the Presley performance, a few people like myself who were close to him during his visit firmly believe the most unfortunate young person in the Gardens that night was Elvis Presley himself.
As child psychologists and psychiatrists were steadily pointing out throughout the hubbub of derision and disapproval, Carol Vanderleck and her associates were exhibiting normal symptoms of adolescent growth.

Best of all, the Presley-symbol sings with a strong, primitive beat that matches the throbbing pulse of a teen-ager who has just discovered her body is no longer childish in outline and longing. As entertainment history proves relentlessly, most teenagers mature and discard their former heroes with thoughtless ease.

Asked in Toronto if he is thinking of marrying, Presley replied with a half smile and lively flicker in his eyes, "I've thought about it, but when I think about being married to just one woman, - uh huh."
When he poses with teenage girls, a procession of whom turn up after every press conference for various publicity reasons, he always manages to squeeze the prettier ones, sniff their hair, check their configuration minutely and kiss a few on the cheek.

"What is your range?" a reporter asked. Presley looked stunned. "Your voice," someone contributed. He looked relieved and, amid laughter he shared, answered, "I don't know. I don't read music at all. In my line of music, you don't have to." "Do you like classical music?" someone maliciously asked. "I don't understand it, I just don't understand it," he answered. "I've got some of it at home." "Do you ever play it?" "No, sir, I don't."
The bitterness many parents feel toward Presley bypasses the rather disarming openness of his nature and concentrates on the lewdness of his performance. This is the aspect of the Presley mania that most parents find unacceptable, the fact that it is so flagrantly rooted in eroticism.

As always there are some fabulous full-page photographs of Elvis in great quality including a lovely one in this issue of Elvis with clothes designer Sy Devore.

Lorentzen has recently discovered the dress rehearsal documents from King Creole.

In this issue there are twelve pages dedicated to King Creole photographs and Elvis' wardrobe shots.

It also features the interesting paperwork and film notes.

Once again Elaine Christan, daughter of super fan Virginia Coons, supplies some good articles including some candid photographs from 1969.

Of interest are her two articles about TTWII director Dennis Sanders and author Jerry Hopkins visiting their home to find out more from dedicated Elvis fans.
While Jerry Hopkins' writing style is very enjoyable I have always had my suspicions about him becoming a lazy author (see EIN Hopkins 2009 book review here).

However in her article Elaine Christan makes no bones about the fact that Jerry Hopkins was manipulative and took them - and perhaps Elvis - for a ride!

Jerry Hopkins visited us sometime in mid-1970. His book "Elvis" was one of the first major bios after Elvis was, well, ELVIS again. But he made some gross errors regarding things that are documented so you have to wonder about the rest of what he wrote. He was really the first to establish the current tabloid image of Elvis. He made all the fans look like jerks! Actually he made Elvis look like a jerk too. His attitude was very superior and I've always felt an accurate summary of Hopkins' book would be "Stupid hick gets lucky!" He did not respect Elvis. Don't get me wrong, unlike my mother; I know Elvis was not a saint. Mom would say she knew this but you just couldn't say anything negative about Elvis in her presence. Jerry sensationalised Elvis in a negative way. And he did it purposefully to sell his book - and it was a best seller! So much of what he said was a distortion at facts. Here is what he did to us....

As with any Elvis photo magazine it is sometimes shocking to see how fast Elvis' health deteriorated in the last few years. Flipping through these pages there is a tiredness and sadness in the later photographs compared to the dynamic shots of him the 1950s. (and there are TONS of great fifties shots in this issue)

However again Elaine Christan provides a positive and personal note about Elvis even in November 1976.

"I was lucky to get some nice photos of Elvis at his concert in Anaheim, California on November 30, 1976.

Elvis had lost a lot of weight since the April 76 shows I'd seen in Long Beach and it was clear that he was both looking and feeling great. He played with the audience a lot that night.

After finishing up the opening numbers of the show and giving his guitar to Charlie he walked around the stage a bit and heard the pleas of a fan who had rushed to the front of the stage.

As he kneeled down and gave her a kiss she reached up and pulled the scarf from around his neck. Next he was back on his feet and belting out "Love Me." - We did.

Elvis At The Shrine - One of the key articles in this issue and an impressive 12 pages are dedicated to Elvis' live appearances in Los Angeles and boy there are some stunning images of Elvis here. Including some fantastic photos I’ve never seen before of him backstage rehearsing.

Most of the text has been written by the very knowledgeable James V Roy of the Scotty Moore website page.

'Elvis talks To Roxy' - from September 1960 there is also a delightful interview with Elvis when he spoke to Roxy magazine.

"It's very funny, Joyce, but I guess I always have a strong desire to go back to school in the fall. Not because I loved school - oh, I like it, but I wasn't crazy about it - but because I loved to play football. In fact, I still play it any chance I get. Guess if it wasn't for show business I'd like to be a professional football player." "Gee, that'll interest the folks in England," I said. "They've got their own football game over there. But I guess they'd like to know what you think about girls, too"

Elvis got up with a grin - that long slow grin of his where his eyes seem to grow bigger and darker. Every time he smiled like that I felt a bit breathless. "I guess the first thing that attracts me to a girl," he said, "is her looks. Like her hair - oh, the colour doesn't matter, but I like a soft, feminine hair-do." I shook my own hair, glad that I'd worn it loose and fluffy.

"I think a girl should have a neat figure, a good speaking voice, and, well, everything just about as fine as she can make it. Of course, I may like one girl for the shape of her nose, and another for the way she smiles. You can't say all the girls you like are the same."

Elvis was rapidly becoming more real to me, someone warm and human. I felt this more strongly when the door opened and a nice looking guy about Elvis' age came in."This is Joe," said Elvis, "an old Army buddy of mine. Joe, meet Joyce, of New York. "When Joe got demobbed I offered him a job. Now he travels all over the place with me. I like company. I usually have six or seven people travelling with me, most of them friends from back home, about my own age."

"When Elvis gets blue," said Joe," he likes to have someone to talk to. But right now he's talking to you, Joyce, so I'll be off!"

It may be worth noting that the design has changed in this issue with the layout and graphics taking on a funkier and more colourful look. While I certainly like the new design, personally I am not that fond of the new white text on a black background - but that’s probably the old fuddy-duddy in me!

Also in the introduction I was confused as Lorentzen implies there is an interview with "little Raoul" from ‘Fun In Acapulco’ when in fact he is talking about Elvis’ newly found interview with Roxy magazine.

Overall Verdict: Nearly into their second year of publication the Elvis Files Magazine keeps providing new articles, interesting reading and more fabulous previously unpublished photographs that have been recently found or for some reason did not fit into the original Elvis Files books. Another very satisfying magazine issue.

Please note that all photos in this article are very low-res scans and do not represent the image quality of the magazine.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 6' Review: The December Issue of the Elvis Files magazine sadly got stuck in the Christmas post but what a treat it is! Once again featuring Elvis stories and new unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
The key article in the magazine is a stunning 20-page feature on Elvis’ last concerts of the fifties in Honolulu, Hawaii. Written by Elvis expert James Roy I found it the most interesting and well-researched story published by the Elvis Files Magazine so far.
In another feature Lorentzen has also discovered seventeen fabulous new photos of Elvis in Jacksonville Florida from February 1956, showing Elvis and the Colonel hanging out and making surreptitious arrangements at the hotel.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Super fan, Virginia Coons Beverly Hills 'Spring 1969'
- Love Me Tender, unseen photos
- It’s A Miracle Elvis Is A Star - by former schoolteacher
- Elvis Cracked Up in Anaheim, November 30, 1976
- Elvis’and Danny Thomas’ complete interview

Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 5' Review: The September Issue of the Elvis Files magazine once again features Elvis stories and new unpublished Elvis photos that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books.
The amazing discovery this time is the twenty-one never-before-published photographs of Elvis in November 1956 with Alis Lesley, the ‘Female Presley’.
Other features this time include Lloyd Shearer "How Elvis Changed His Public Image" and the important 1957 African-American JET magazine article about Elvis and racism.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Shelley Fabares & Elvis
- Interview with William A Graham (director of ‘Change Of Habit’)
- ‘Elvis My Best Man’ Interview with George Klein
- Super fan, Virginia Coons Meeting Elvis

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 4' - Review: Published last month, the June Issue of the Elvis Files magazine once again features Elvis stories, as well as new unpublished Elvis photos, that would be missed from Lorentzen's "Elvis Files" series of books. EIN has been overseas recently so we've been running a little late with reviews.
Favourite features this time include 'Elvis attending Nancy Sinatra’s 1970 opening night' and ten years earlier 'Elvis’ April 1960 train journey to L.A.' - plus the ten pages dedicated to Elvis and Debra Paget.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis Live October 1976 at Fort Wayne
- Elvis Live October 1957 in LA and San Francisco.
- Elvis and his famous luxury gold Cadillac.
- Hedda Hopper "He is the Greatest Phenomenon"
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine ISSUE 3' - Review: Released March 2013, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
The real score here is of course that Erik Lorentzen has managed to get hold of Frank Powolny’s 1956 September photographs - and there are plenty here over twenty good size shots - and in great quality too.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- A look at Elvis and Mary Ann Mobley
- Rare photos from 'Follow That Dream'.
- Personal fan stories of meeting Elvis
- Elvis Gospel in his 68 Maroon suit
- Ann-Margret: The Girlfriend Who Isn’t One.

Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

'Elvis Files Magazine Issue 2' - Review: Released last month, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
I have seen little about this December magazine publication elsewhere on the Internet and yet I found it another excellent magazine, and for me even more interesting than the first issue.
The real treat here is Lorentzen’s personal story of meeting Elvis and visiting Graceland, as well as lots of exclusive on-stage photos taken during that 1975 tour by the Norwegian fan club.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis and The Martial Arts – by Master Kang Ree.
- "The World of Elvis Jumpsuits" – Featuring the unusual Black PasSaRyu Karate jacket from August/ September 1974.
- Elvis and The DIG magazine. Four great pages of candids from April 1956
- A rare Elvis Interview from 1964.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.
