Warhol's 'Eight Elvises' sells for $100 million: The sale of Andy Warhol's artwork 'Eight Elvises' for $100 million (according to ElvisMatters) brings the controversial artist in the same category as Picasso and Van Gogh. The special thing about this work is that it is a unique piece and that is not always the case with Warhols work. Eight Elvisses was already sold last year, but the news was only now revealed. 'Vegas Trumps Vol 4' new import CD: Due for release is the CD "Vegas Trumps volume 4".  The disc comes in a cardboard package and features four tracks from Elvis Presley's midnight show as recorded on August 28, 1974 is Las Vegas and three previously unreleased tracks. Keeping up with legendary entertainer Tom Jones: When Elvis is telling you one thing and Frank Sinatra is telling you another, it's hard to know who to listen to. But that's what it was like for a young Tom Jones when he first made it in the US. In 1965, when British fever was in full swing, the Welsh singer had his first big hit with It's Not Unusual - it was No.1 in the UK and top 10 in the US. Not long after, the former construction worker from Pontypridd got to meet his idols, whom he had watched on TV as a teenager. He became good friends with Elvis, who took a keen interest in his work. "I did an album of standards once," recalls Jones, "and (Elvis) said, 'We don't do that, Tom. We leave songs like that to Sinatra.' "And I said, 'Well, OK, then.' And when I was talking to Frank Sinatra, he said, 'You could be a great jazz singer. You should do more big band stuff.' "So Elvis was wanting me to be more rock 'n' roll and Frank was advising me to sing more swing stuff, but I said, 'I like it all'. " His friendship continued until Presley's later years. Jones still has a recurring dream where he goes back in time to warn Elvis about his future. "It was shocking," he says about Elvis's death. "I didn't realise he was that sick. I could see that he was getting heavy, and then he pushed away a lot of people so I couldn't get to talk to him for the last few years of his life because he wouldn't answer any of my calls any more."

New Rainbow Records release: Soon to be released is the latest production from “Rainbow Records”. This release will feature the complete performance of Elvis Presley's very last concert in Mobile, Alabama - recorded June 2nd, 1977. There were several reasons why this show was chosen for a release. First of all – it had to be unreleased. Second, the show should contain some interesting, unusual material, maybe a rare version of a seldom performed song? Another important aspect was to find a tape that has a listenable, decent sound quality for an audience recording. This is why we chose Elvis´ final visit in the state of Alabama as our newest cd project. Although Elvis was clearly not in best shape regarding his physical appearance his voice was strong and powerful as always on this closing show of his second to last concert tour. “An American Trilogy” which Elvis included to his setlist rather surprisingly or the performance of “You Gave Me A Mountain”, “Help Me” and “Hurt” prove that his spirit and feeling for many of his songs was still there. All in all you will get a nearly perfect overview of what Elvis was able to deliver to his audience on June 2nd, 1977.

Johnnie's Drive-In gets new owner: Johnnie's Drive-In, Tupelo's oldest restaurant, has as a new owner and he's a familiar face because he used to own Johnnie's! Seven years ago, Don Knight sold the eatery on East Main Street and wished he hadn't. 'I got burned out, Knight said , But about two weeks after I sold it, I was ready to buy it back" The famous eatery where Elvis used to enjoy cheeseburgers and RC Cola is Knight's once more. For 22 years, Knight owned Johnnie's, having bought the restaurant from the original owners, Johnnie & Margret Chism. They originally opened the restaurant on Oct. 17, 1945. After selling the restaurant, Knight realised how much he missed it all.'I never thought I'd be able to buy it back and had given up on it." Knight said. Now that he's back in charge. Knight said he plans to make a few minor changes. 'A few things were altered, and I'm going to change them back to the way I think they should be', he said. BBC To Honour Elvis On 75th Birthday: BBC Radio 2 marks what would have been Elvis Presley's 75th birthday with a season of revelatory documentaries, from 26 December 2009-8 January 2010. Including programmes presented by Suzi Quatro, Jerry Hall and Rob Brydon, the season encompasses everything about "the King of Rock 'n' Roll", the music, the films, the brand and his personal life. Lewis Carnie, Head of Programmes, Radio 2, says: "From expert opinion, to Elvis through the eyes of his fans, Radio 2's season of documentaries provides a fascinating insight into Elvis the man, his music, his influence and his enduring legacy as the undisputed King of Rock 'n' Roll." Jerry Hall kicks off the season on 26 December with Elvis – Gospel According To The King (at 10pm), as she explores the importance of gospel music in Elvis Presley's life. Travelling back to his early influences, and featuring contributions from The Jordanaires, DJ Fontana, James Burton and Jerry Scheff, the programme also explains how Elvis incorporated gospel songs into his on-stage repertoire and his movie soundtracks. Jerry comments: "Although Elvis was The King of Rock 'n' Roll, his roots were the gospel music that he had grown up listening to while still a small boy when his momma took him to the Baptist churches in rural Tennessee." Between 1956 and 1969, despite having no training as an actor, Elvis made 31 films. Elvis – Movie King Or Celluloid Sellout (Part 1 can be heard on 28 December at 11.30pm and Part 2 on 29 December at 11.30pm), presented by Paul Morley, investigates the movie career of the singer, revisiting the songs and exploring the stories from GI Blues, Blue Hawaii and King Creole, to Girls Girls Girls, Flaming Star and Kissin' Cousins. Also on 29 December, Paul Gambaccini presents Elvis – Elvis & Dewey, at 10.30pm, the fascinating story of a pioneering DJ who played a part in the birth of rock 'n' roll in Memphis and the start of Elvis's career.

Elvis Presley First Album Re-issue: According to Amazon, Elvis' self-titled first album will be re-issued on vinyl (again) through the Music on Vinyl (Cargo) budget label on November 27, 2009 in Germany. Libertyland Demolition & Zippin Pippin Update; Demolition crews tore out a hunk of the Zippin Pippin last week as part of the project to sweep away the remains of Libertyland. But only a chunk was torn out, to see if the famous roller-coaster, one of Elvis' favourite funfair rides, was salvageable. Some city officials and community leaders have wondered if the wooden roller coaster, like the recently dismantled carousel, could be repaired and reinstalled somewhere else. Lipscomb thinks that's unlikely. "What they're going to do is analyze how bad it is and see if it can be salvaged. The timbers are really, really rotten," he said. Steve Mulroy, a county commissioner and member of the non-profit Save Libertyland, wasn't pleased. "In the final analysis, it probably doesn't matter because we'd have to replace that wood anyway," he said. "But the fact that they assured us they wouldn't touch the Pippin, and did anyway, is a little troubling."

Fox News meanwhile has broadcast a news item stating that the fight to save Elvis' favourite ride is still on! However the demolition continues on the remains of Libertyland. The city has been trying to figure out what to do with the Mid-South Fairgrounds site for several years. Last year, city officials chose a plan backed by real estate developer Henry Turley to redevelop the area into a centre for retail, entertainment and other purposes. But disagreements over fees have slowed that project, leading officials to consider other alternatives. The ownership of the coaster is even in dispute. Save Libertyland says they own it after a previous developer, Carolina Crossroads, deeded it to them. However, Mulroy said city officials told Save Libertyland to remove the coaster. When they didn't, Mulroy said, city officials claimed ownership. When asked who owned the ride, Lipscomb could only say, "I have no idea," then added, "If they own it, they need to get it moved." 'Viva Elvis' Media rumours: More on the media rumblings about major changes taking place in Cirque du Soleil's "Viva Elvis" show at CityCenter: The show is still on track for CityCenter's Dec. 16 opening, but there's talk that it might go on a three-week hiatus and return for a Jan. 8, Elvis extravaganza on what would have been The King's 75th birthday. It is reported that at least one young Elvis actor has been dropped from the cast. Apparently Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte checked out Cirque’s “Viva Elvis” show last week and called for some major changes. Alan Felddman, MGM Mirage senior vice president of public affairs, however said he attended a rehearsal with Laliberte last week, “and he was far from upset. the show looked great.” (News, Source;SanjaM/EIN)

Elvis’ songs never needed gospel group: Most non-Elvis fans have never heard of Gordon Stoker. At the moment, I can’t seem to get him out of my mind—neither him nor the vocal gospel group he led, the Jordanaires... comments writer Jeff Simon of The Buffalo News. That’s because an upcoming four-disc Elvis Presley box set retrospective— "Elvis 75: Good Rockin’ Tonight"— is being issued Dec. 8 in advance of the celebration of Elvis’ 75th birthday at Graceland from Jan. 7 through 10. I’ve been listening to advance discs of the set, and it is Stoker and the Jordanaires that stop me every time. There they are, all through Elvis’ early work for RCA, singing godawful, insanely inappropriate gospel backup to this iconic, radical, culture-smashing hybrid music from Memphis. If, for instance, you listen to Elvis’ "Hound Dog" - Scotty Moore’s two seminal guitar solos are accompanied by the wordless gospel harmonies of Gordon Stoker and a couple other singers, stuffed there by Nashville producing honcho Chet Atkins, to appease terrified record executives. You listen to it now, more than 50 years later, with any objectivity and you can’t help muttering, in perfect hindsight, "What the …? What’s THAT doing there?"

Angie Best reveals what really happened on her night with Elvis: It is one of the most intriguing stories ever to come out of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! - how Elvis Presley stole the girlfriend of his friend George Hamilton.Hamilton, who has a reputation as one of Hollywood's greatest Casanovas, revealed on the ITV show that he had gone to one of Elvis's Las Vegas concerts with his girlfriend Angie MacDonald-Janes, who went on to marry footballer George Best.The perma-tanned actor said he had waited for 45 minutes while Angie went to Elvis's dressing room - and then left, feeling 'like an idiot'.But when The Mail on Sunday contacted Angie Best, she gave a rather different version of events.She insisted her time backstage with Elvis was 'entirely innocent', although the singer gave her a turquoise ring and insisted she take his phone number. And she says that Hamilton was so jealous that he sneakily changed the numbers in her address book so she couldn't contact Elvis.The story emerged in last night's edition of the show as Hamilton, 70, told his fellow contestants about the concert in 1971. He said: 'There was a girl in London who I was dating called Angie - she married a footballer named Best. I was dating her so I brought her to Elvis's show. We went backstage.'

'Elvis was changing and he saw Angie and of course Angie just thought he was incredible. She said something about his concho belt [a native American belt with several metal buckles].'She said, "Elvis, where did you get those?" He said, "I've got a lot of them, I've got a collection, would you like to see them?" Well, I thought he was going to bring out the collection, but he said, "Come with me. So I see her go off and I'm waiting and waiting - 45 minutes go by and I felt like an idiot. So I got up and said, "Guys, please tell Elvis that I saw the show and send him my best and please tell the young lady that it was lovely to see her and I hope all goes well" and I walk out of the casino. I never saw her again until 18, 20 years later on a plane and we were both going to London and she said, "Hi George, remember me?" And I said, "Angie, what happened?" She said, "Nothing". I said, "I waited 45 minutes and I never forgot it."'But last night Angie said of her brief relationship with Hamilton: 'It's funny how people's memories are different. He does sound a little bit bitter.'I had just arrived in Los Angeles from England. I was just 19 at the time, and I didn't really know who Elvis was, not properly. George took me on a private jet from LA with Sammy Davis Jr and his wife to Las Vegas. We went to the hotel and we watched the show, and afterwards the Colonel came over to our table and asked if I wanted to come backstage to meet Elvis.'George didn't like that at all, so he said I couldn't go, but the Colonel came back a little bit later and said Elvis had spotted me in the crowd and thought I was the prettiest girl there. I went back and spent about 45 minutes with Elvis. He wasn't my type at all - I'm English, I don't go for a man wearing a white jumpsuit with glittering stars!'He poured his heart out to me about how unhappy he was and how he couldn't find love, and he just wanted to find someone to love and settle down with. 'To be honest, I was falling asleep. It was a bit of a rant - I think he was on drugs. But when I went to leave, he said, "Can I give you my number? I'd love to see you again". So he wrote his number in my book. And he gave me this turquoise ring he was wearing.'She said Hamilton was still there when she returned from her conversation with Elvis.

Angie, 57, met George Best in LA four years later. They married in 1978 and had one son, Calum. She now splits her time between London and LA, running her fitness centres Best Bodies, with a new one opening in Henley, Oxfordshire, next week.

A Car fit for A King....Elvis Mercedes on eBay: From the eBay listing: In 2008 this car was appraised at $750,000 by a New York appraiser for a possible donation to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is Elvis Presley’s personal car that is incredibly documented from new. This is definitely a piece of Rolling Art probably better described as Rock and Rolling Art. Elvis purchased this car and titled it in his name. One of the very few cars that were ever titled and registered in his name. This is the one with the famous “Lightning Bolt” in gold leaf with TCB (Takin' Care of Business) logo on both front doors. I have copies of the original bill of sale, Elvis’s registration card, the Retail Delivery Statement from Mercedes, the title and the finance contract.. Yes, The “King” financed this car placing $5500.00 down payment and 36 payments of $344.44 per month. Amazing! I also have a copy of a great photo of Elvis in a tuxedo getting into this car. In addition I have Elvis’s authentic driver’s license issued September 1975 through 1977 by the State of Tennessee which states on the reverse side that it was also good for motorcycles. I believe that this may have been Elvis’s last driver’s license.

BBC Elvis Radio Tribute Show: The BBC needs contributions from fans for its upcoming Elvis tribute show.

For the show, a British Broadcasting Corp. radio crew will visit Tupelo today for a two-hour show on Elvis Presley. Hot news On The 'Viva Elvis' Show and CD: EIN contributor Brian Quinn reports >>.. Apparently the Aria Theatre which will house the 'Viva Elvis' Show is amazing. Further inside information reveals that the 'Viva Elvis' CD from the said show is said to be outstanding and mixed with far superior technology to that of the Beatles' 'Love' album. The sound on the CD will be the most contemporary sounding Elvis we have ever heard.There is a strong chance of some single releases from the show including Duets. This release will get the 'full works' from Sony and it is hoped sales will be in excess of the 30 No.1 Hits. Sounds great and this will be followed up in 2011 with similar technology for a new 'Duets' album - another big seller. There is also the possibility of the show being filmed in 3D for the cinema circuit. I can also confirm that Simon Fuller is in the process of outlining a Biopic of The King along the lines of Johnny Cash's 'Walk The Line' but that could take a couple of years to get off the ground. 2010 and beyond - Elvis is still in the building! Memphis Vs Tennessee - Presley in the house: Priscilla Presley, Lindsay Davenport and Peyton Manning were among the famous faces in attendance at the FedExForum. But the lure of the country's top two teams with No. 1 Memphis Tigers hosting No. 2 Tennessee playing each other Saturday night in Memphis was too much to pass up if you could wrangle yourself a ticket. It didn't even matter that even Manning, the former Tennessee quarterback, needed help from Memphis officials to land a ticket to watch his Vols play the Tigers. Presley, who helped bathe the late Elvis Presley's Graceland with blue lights a night before in honor of the Tigers' perfect start, had a front row seat. Appropriately enough, the halftime show featured a series of songs by her former late husband ELVIS. Priscilla and Elvis separated in 1972, five years before his untimely death. Davenport and Blake are in town for a tennis tournament, and they took to the court during the first media timeout of the first half to help advertise that event. They each hit tennis balls up into the crowd. For twenty years Marty Lacker was a close friend of Elvis Presley and for a number of years was his right hand man or as Elvis and The Memphis Mafia called it, “The Foreman”. Through those years Marty took some great candid pictures of Elvis and the MM in various situations and he was also given many pictures by other people who shot them.  There are some great never before seen pictures of various places and times that Elvis and the guys enjoyed within those 20 years.  He also has a couple of pictures of Elvis’ jewelry that Elvis gave to Marty as well as pictures that include a few other stars that knew Elvis taken with Elvis or the guys with them. We are calling them a collection because Marty has decided to sell all 210 pictures, one of the largest photo collections related to Elvis and he is selling them as a total 210 picture package.  This is not a sale of individual pictures.

Over 98 percent of the pictures are casual candids just a few are professionally posed pictures. They are both 8x10's and snapshot size. It is a great mixture and one that any fan or Elvis or photograph devotee would love to have. Elvis 1956 Tupelo Concert Photographer, Terry Wood has died: James Terry Wood, 79, long-time Tupelo resident, died Sunday Nov 15, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo following an extended illness. An accomplished photographer, he is perhaps best known as the former owner of Terry Wood Photography, founded in 1954. His award-winning works were well known both nationally and throughout Mississippi. His homecoming photos taken in 1956 of Elvis Presley have been used in media and books worldwide. He loved to tell people, "the entire world recognized two words, Coca Cola, and Elvis Presley" From 1954 until retiring from photography in 1993, he became a nationally recognized figure in the photographic profession. Wood was a founder of the North Mississippi Photographers Association and a lifetime member since 1949 of the Professional Photographers of Mississippi and Alabama. In 1976, he was chosen president of the American Society of Photographers and became an honorary lifetime member in 1987. Approximately 250 of Terry’s photos from the 1950’s and 1960’s were chosen in a Harvard University project. He was actively involved locally in several organizations and was a senior member of Tupelo Rotary Club. He had a beautiful bass voice and sang in a local quartet several years. Jason Lee Grabs "Elvis" role in new TNT Pilot ‘Delta Blues’: Jason Lee, who you know from everything from Mallrats to My Name is Earl, will be the lead in the new TNT pilot Delta Blues. His character is Dwight Hendricks, a Memphis police officer who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator. Big names surround Delta Blues, so there’s reason to have confidence in it already. Aside from Lee, there’s Emmy-nominated Clark Johnson (The Shield) who will be directing, actor Joshua Harto (The Dark Knight), a script by Liz M. Garcia (Cold Case) and executive producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov with Warner Television. Preparations for Elvis' 75th birthday underway: UK newspaper The Independent is promoting Elvis' Birthday. "If Elvis were still alive, he would turn 75 years old on January 8, 2010. So the party plans are starting with several events planned to commemorate the date, including a CD package, special concerts at Graceland in Memphis, and a Cirque du Soleil tribute show. The Elvis Birthday Celebration 2010, January 7-10, 2010, happens in Graceland and other venues throughout Memphis. Sony Legacy will release a four-disc box set, Elvis 75-Good Rockin' Tonight, on December 8. The collection of 100 songs from the King of Rock'n'Roll's repertoire, spans genres from rhythm and blues and rock to country, pop and gospel. With hits from "Hound Dog" and "Burnin' Love," songs from his movies, tracks from his platinum albums, and concert performances, and "A Little Less Conversation" (JXL Radio Remix Edit). The retrospective package also includes a booklet with rare photographs and a definitive essay. Sillerman's Vegas Dreams Crash: Wall Steet Journal reports that Robert F.X. Sillerman, the media entrepreneur who runs the company that produces American Idol, acquired 17.7 acres in Las Vegas with dreams of building a casino resort with an Elvis theme - but that the plan has become the latest victim of Las Vegas’s sagging economy. Mr. Sillerman’s company that owns the six contiguous properties, FX Real Estate and Entertainment Inc., said last week in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the land is set to be sold as part of a pre-packaged bankruptcy agreement that it has reached with lenders. The collapse is yet another sign of the sharp downturn of the gambling industry, which has seen Las Vegas revenue and land values plummet while forcing a few casinos and resorts into bankruptcy. FX Real Estate was never able to fund its $3 billion Elvis resort that featured a luxury hotel casino with 2,269 rooms and 93,000 square feet of casino-floor space. The expected bankruptcy also may provide a barometer of just how much Las Vegas real estate has suffered. Mr. Sillerman declined to comment.

"All Shook Up" Campaign from Sirius radio: Elvis is featured in a new promo campaign. This time footage from the '68 Comeback Special was used for a commercial for Sirius Satellite Radio. RadioSirius XM "shook up" the nation’s televisions last weekend with the launch of what CEO Mel Karmazin referred to as "the most aggressive national ad branding campaign in our history.” The new Sirius XM thirty second ad spot, seen on millions of US televisions, begins with vintage footage of Elvis from his ‘68 Comeback Special singing a rousing version of “All Shook Up.” While the song continues to play, the slick visual moves through footage of Michael Jordan, Richard Pryor and Howard Stern. The end of the ad brings text exclaiming “Satellite Radio is changing it again.” The Sirius XM logo and web address to the newly launched siriusxm.com are shown in the final frame. This new eye-catching advert is getting a positive public response. 'Good Times' FTD full Details: The complete details of the FTD collectors label re-issue of the 1974 "Good Times" album have been released. This edition comes as a double-disc 'Classic Album' set. The audio has been Mastered by Jean-Marc Juilland and the set should be released at the beginning of December. Elvis's Cadillac to be restored: The BBC reports that a Cadillac which may once have belonged to Elvis Presley is being restored to its former glory in Tyneside. A team of Heaton-based specialist restorers have been commissioned to revamp the seats inside the gleaming white convertible. The 8.2-litre Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado, built in the early '70s, has been bought by an English car collector who wants to remain anonymous. He said the car once belonged to the singer, who died in 1977 aged 42. Restoration experts at Northumbrian Leather will remove layers of gloss white paint from the seats of the Cadillac. Co-owner of Northumbrian Leather Max Tait said: "Somebody down the line has thought it was a good idea, in the name of restoration, to slap a few coats of thick white paint across the seats. "It is not that the car has been re-sprayed and the seats have changed colour, they have just been repainted and repainted and repainted probably every year, for years, to keep them white. The car has been bought by a UK car collector, who remains anonymous, "Now they feel horrible. Hopefully we can get back to soft original leather beneath all the dry and crispy paint and restore the original finish." Mr Tait described the V8 engine-powered vehicle as a "bit of a monster" and added: "If you can imagine fitting a set of brakes to a boat then that's what it's like to drive." New novel about Elvis' twin: Jesse Garon Presley was born the same day as Elvis Aaron Presley in 1935. However, Gladys and Vernon Presley's other son was stillborn, and never knew the family's poverty, or the riches they enjoyed when Elvis became the king of rock 'n' roll. But in an alternate literary reality created by Hatfield writer Brett Wallach, Jesse, Elvis' fraternal twin, survives. "Because they were so poor, they sold the baby on the black market," said Wallach, noting that the country was in the throes of the Great Depression at the time. In the e-book "Jesse Garon: The Search for Elvis Presley's Twin," the baby is raised by a couple in Philadelphia, unaware that he is Elvis' brother. A big music fan and a songwriter since his teen years, Wallach adds a delicious twist to the fantasy when the adoptive parents, the Zimmermans, rename the child Robert, as in Bob Dylan's real name — Robert Zimmerman. "He ends up working at a newspaper as an advertising salesperson. (He grows up to be) a nondescript middle class person. He doesn't want any notoriety. I talk about the duality of fame (in the book)," Wallach said. That's why the hero of the story, private investigator Phil Allman, is hired by some nefarious characters looking to find Zimmerman and make a buck off exploiting his connection to Elvis.

Buddy Holly Guitar To Go On Auction Block: The guitar that Buddy Holly customized himself as a tribute to Elvis Presley is going to be auctioned. Christie's auction house will sell Holly's Gibson J-45 guitar. Holly covered the guitar in leather because he had seen Presley play a leather-covered guitar in 1955. As William J. Bush recounts: Unlike Presley, however, Holly did the leatherwork himself, tracing the outline of the J-45 on brown paper and shrinking the leather in the bathtub to fit to size. He then hand-tooled, scribing his name, his state, and the titles of his first Decca releases on it. The guitar is expected to sell for $450,000 to $550,000. Holly's tweed stage jacket will also be sold, and it's expected to go for at least $3,000. Also at the actions will be original 78's of Presley's first five singles for Sun Records. Lock Of Elvis' Hair A Big Hit At Auction (see earlier story dated 8 Nov): A tiny strand of hair said to have been clipped from the head of Elvis Presley has sold at auction for more than £1,000.The snippet, which is mounted in a 12in by 22in frame alongside a photograph of the music legend, had been tipped to fetch up to £250.Wiltshire auctioneer Henry Aldridge and Son brought the hammer down at £1,055.The strand had been cut off and kept by Presley's barber of more than 20 years, Homer Gill Gilleland. He used to dye the singer's sandy-blond locks black, and cut his hair into a towel.

He would then apparently pack the strands into a plastic bread bag and take them home with him. After Presley's death in 1977, the barber is said to have sold the hair across the road from Graceland. The filament sold in Devizes was obtained in September 2002 by Thomas B. Elvis owned ring for sale: Throughout the realm of Elvis fans, the news is out — the King's ring is for sale.

"That ring has gotten a tremendous amount of press in the UK, Europe and Asia," said Malcolm Mason, Affiliated's director of operations. He expects bidders from around the world. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind type of entertainment memorabilia," Mason added.Included are all the news clippings, ticket stubs, photos, and consigner Lloyd Perry's account of how he received it as a gift in Asheville, N.C., the night of July 24, 1975, when Elvis performed there — the last stop of the singer's concert tour at the time.The ring is a gold casting, size 11, and has a total 10 carats' worth of diamonds. The stones range in size from 0.44 to to 1.39 ct. The ring weighs 27.2 grams. Presley was known for his taste in unique jewelry items, but Mason said it's not known exactly who made the ring or where the King got it.Just as amazing is how Perry got it. He and friends were on the front row in Asheville that night and at one point several songs into the show, Elvis paused to toss a rather well-worn Gibson guitar toward the front row. Perry and the guy next to him caught it. They took turns playing with it."Although the other guy kept the guitar, I think Elvis wanted me to have it," Perry says in his account of that night. "After a couple more songs, all of a sudden my wife nudged me and said 'Elvis is motioning for you to come to the stage.' Well, I looked up and went to the stage to shake hands with him, and to my absolute surprise, he was trying to put this ring on my pinky finger."I got him to put it on my ring finger while I was shaking like a leaf. I then went back and sat down," he said, adding that the audience was going wild. "Afterwards Elvis walked back across the stage, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Aw, what's $16,000?' "Mason says memorabilia from the entertainment world is one of the big segments of the auction business, and Affiliated sells its share of items from screen and stage. Elvis People play views celebrity obsession: Playwright Doug Grissom read a biography of Elvis Presley “some years ago,” he says, “and became interested in the great singer's effect on mid-20th century American culture.”

Grissom is the author of “Elvis People,” which opens at the Warehouse Theatre on Friday for a four-week run. The play is directed by Chip Egan. Although he did visit Graceland, Elvis' Memphis home, Grissom says he drew most of the characters for his play from imagination. The play is sliced into 11 unconnected vignettes. Some are based on true stories, says Grissom, such as the one about a newlywed couple for whom the generous Elvis buys a car but who get mad at him because he doesn't give them the car they really wanted.The playwright's favorites include the not-necessarily-true stories in the play — one about an Elvis impersonator's life, another about parents' disconnect with their teenage daughter's choice of music and one about a Vietnam vet who is motivated to survive his war injury by listening to Elvis songs. Egan, a former drama faculty member at Clemson University, knows the playwright through academic connections — Grissom teaches theater at the University of Virginia — and says this is the fourth production of “Elvis People” he has directed.Grissom says although his work has been produced numerous times, including off Broadway, “Chip has been the best director so far.”Egan describes the play “as a portrait of us, Americans, viewed through the lens of our fixation on celebrities.” Many of its observations hold true in the recent death of another celebrity, pop icon Michael Jackson. Sony Australia to release Elvis Presley 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977: In 2001, EIN proposed to what was then Sony BMG, that they release a compilation of Elvis's Top 10 Hits in Australia. While many Elvis greatest hits compiles have been released (and continue to be released) around the world, there were a number of songs which had been a hit in Australia but not in most other countries, giving an Aussie compile a point of difference to other such releases........#1 and top 10 songs including Ask Me; Ain't That Loving You Baby; Viva Las Vegas; Such A Night; Judy; Edge of Reality; Separate Ways; Don't Cry Daddy; I've Lost You and The Next Step Is Love.Finally, in 2010, Sony Music (Australia) is to release a double album of Elvis's Top 10 Hits in Australia. While the full track listing has not been announced, limiting the release to 50 Top Ten hits means more than a dozen Top Ten hits in Australia miss the cut. We can only hope Sony includes songs not usually included on the usual 'greatest hits' compiles to make its Aussie release distinctive! And we can only hope that the release, a very worthwhile one, gets the promotion it deserves! The official Sony press release states that between 1959 and 2002 Elvis had 120 chart topping releases.......EIN is unsure how Sony arrived at this very high number.

BBC2 to celebrate Elvis's 75th: BBC 2 is running an Elvis night in January 2010, days before what would have been the singer’s 75th birthday. The evening, part of the station’s winter / spring 2010 schedule which was announced today, will include new and archive programmes, such as Elvis By The Presleys Uncut, a 90-minute home film portrait of Elvis by his closest relatives.

There is also a new documentary with a working title of Elvis In Vegas, looking at what Presley did for Las Vegas during the latter years of his career; as well as be two performance specials: Elvis – The Comeback Concert from 1968 and Elvis – Aloha From Hawaii from 1973. The schedule also includes the New Review Show, a new cultural discussion programme in the Newsnight Review slot. It will examine cultural, current affairs and the artistic landscape. Legal obstacle to Dutch Graceland: The city Breda (NL) could be the home of a new 'Graceland'. A copy of Elvis' home is already build up to the roof, but the neighbourhood is asking to remove the building because they think the building is to big and luxurious to fit between the other houses. According to the city Breda, all licenses are approved and they are giving permission to the owner to finish the mansion against the will of the neighbours. The dispute will be settled in court. The original marriage certificate issued to Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley on May 26, 1994 in the Dominican Republic, where the couple embarked on their brief but highly publicized life together, will be sold in an important multi-estate sale slated for the weekend of Jan. 22-24, 2010, by Philip Weiss Auctions. The certificate was signed by both Jackson and Presley.

“Anything relating to Michael Jackson is of extreme interest right now because of his untimely death and the release of the movie,” said Philip Weiss, “but when you have an item that combines his name and legend with the Presley name and legend, their marriage certificate no less, with both of their signatures on it, you’ve got something that’s almost impossible to predict what it will bring at auction.”

That same weekend, another slice of music and pop culture memorabilia will be sold by Philip Weiss Auctions: a large photo of the Beatles, signed by all four members of the group, personalized to the late pianist Liberace. In their lighthearted way, the Beatles signed it “to Liber-Archie” as a play on words. Also in the auction will be many other pieces of authentic signed Beatles-related memorabilia.

George Clooney to produce Elvis related TV cop show: George Clooney is returning to television in a producing role: The Men Who Stare at Goats star and partner Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures have teamed up with Warner Horizon for the drama pilot Delta Blues which revolves around a quirky Memphis cop by day but Elvis impersonator by night who still lives with mom, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Clooney and Heslov-executive produced project has been around for a while. TNT added it to its development slate in May 2008. Although this is the first pilot for Smokehouse, Clooney has produced for TV before: improv series K Street and Unscripted on HBO. (Opposite: Sanja with the legendary James Burton)

Priscilla Presley set for West End debut: Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla Presley is thinking of performing live on stage for the first time in a comedy play, which is scheduled to take place at London's West End. The 60-year old Presley feels the play may be an interesting opportunity for her to exhibit her versatility as an actress. She has films like The Naked Gun, and The Hayley Wagner to her credit and now she is all set to perform for the first time in front of a live audience. "I've been offered a fantastic role that can't say too much about, but it's a comedy with a serious message. I've never really done stage before but that's the challenge of being an actress," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.

Permanent presence for Elvis on the high seas?: We've heard of one-off Elvis themed cruises, but a regular Elvis presence on the high seas? That's the plan at Norwegian Cruise Line, which is announcing today that one of Las Vegas' best-known shows, Legends in Concert, will be debuting on the line's next ship, the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic. Billed as the original tribute show, Legends has been a Sin City staple for 25 years and is known for a cast of uncanny celebrity look-alikes that perform as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Tina Turner, Madonna, Garth Brooks, Cher and others.

NCL executives say Legends cast members will perform regularly in two venues on the 153,000-ton Epic, which debuts next summer. Three celebrity tribute performers will take the stage in the ship's 685-seat Epic Theater for six 45-minute shows over three days during each seven-day cruise.  In addition, a cabaret-style show will be performed on three additional nights in the Manhattan Room, the ship’s New York-inspired supper club. 

The celebrity performers will change every four months to keep the show fresh, the line says, so the Elvis look-alike or any other specific performer won't be on every voyage. Norwegian plans to announce the initial lineup of look-alikes in the coming months. The line also is announcing today that another well-known show experience that is in Las Vegas and other destinations, Howl at the Moon, will be coming to the ship. It'll be performed four times per cruise in the Headliners, the Norwegian Epic’s 280-seat comedy club.

Howl at the Moon is an entertainment experience where piano players not only entertain visitors but pull them into the show. The four-hour set planned for the ship will center around two baby grand pianos and feature rock music from the 1970’s to today.

The new shows are just the latest big name productions to be announced for the Norwegian Epic. The line previously announced the ship will boast regular, 75-minute performances of another icon of Las Vegas, the Blue Man Group, as well as performances by comedy group Second City. Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan, in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY, says such blockbuster offerings should help the line get the notice it deserves.  

"Our brand has not really ever gotten the credit (it deserves) in the marketplace," Sheehan tells USA TODAY. "We're just trying to break away in the market, and these are the kind of things we need to do to get people to take notice."

Sheehan says there will be no charge for passengers to go to either new show. Bigger than all but a handful of Royal Caribbean ships, Epic will be more than 60% larger than the largest NCL ship currently at sea and dwarf the biggest vessels operated by such big-ship lines as Carnival, Princess and Celebrity.

Elvis suits slay dragons: Nanaimo costume designer Eleanor von Boetticher captivated the dragons’ attention with her sparkly Elvis Pro Jumpsuits. Von Boetticher appeared on the Oct. 28 episode of CBC’s Dragons Den, a television program where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to venture capitalists – referred to as dragons on the show – in hopes of convincing at least one of the dragons to invest development capital into the business.The company was one of three selected from Nanaimo in May to appear on the television program. The Nit Nannies, owned by Andrea Cowdery and Sandra Friess, which focuses on methods to eliminate head lice infestations in school children, and a proposal for a travelling bodypainting show by Dawn Tyndall, artist Jeff King and model Amy Houlton, failed to get the dragons to pull out their chequebooks.Pro Elvis Jumpsuits was started several years ago to supply a world-wide market of 85,000 Elvis impersonators who need high-quality, durable costumes. But the labour-intensive, custom-made costumes are expensive and von Boetticher wanted to mass produce a less expensive alternative for performers.The dragons liked her idea. “We went in there looking for $30,000 for a 30 per cent stake in the company and we came out with $30,000,” von Boetticher said.

The dragons bought in with $5,000 for five percent of the company profits and $25,000 as a low interest rate line of credit – a better deal than what she was asking for.“It makes a lot of sense because it keeps all the control in my hands, but it gives us the money that we need to expand,” she said. W. Brett Wilson and Robert Herjavec are the two investors.“It was just really an exciting experience,” she said. “It was just a flurry of activity getting ready for the show and it’s just been going over the top busy since the show aired.”Well wishers have shown support for von Boetticher and her company with dozens of of e-mails. Simply appearing on national television would be trying for most people, but von Boetticher had to overcome a speech impediment that causes her to stutter.“It was a pretty daunting effort. I had no idea whether I would be able to speak or not, really, but I was pretty amazed that I was able to get through it,” she said. “Oh, I still have it, but I guess I’ve had more practise public speaking now.”At the moment the line of credit is being used to buy huge amounts supplies to ramp up production. Eddie Belman passes away: Eddie Bellman, the Biloxian who helped keep the “Elvis was here” stories alive on the Mississippi Coast, died Friday at 89. Through stories backed by photographs and film, Bellman regaled locals and occasionally the nation with observations about a young Elvis, who in 1955 and 1956 performed and played here. Bellman took Elvis Presley on his first deep-sea fishing trips, where The King snagged bonito, mackerel and sharks. On one trip, Bellman took an 8-mm movie camera, and his 17 minutes of color clips are now classics of the early Elvis years. Bellman’s rare film footage shows a 21-year-old Elvis who was already making movies and gold records but not yet insulated from the public.“Elvis was a happy person then, very accommodating, very friendly, cooperative and very polite,” Bellman told the Sun Herald. “He was so happy to be out on that boat...His way of paying me back was to make an appearance at my shoe place.” With his usual humor, Bellman added, “I don’t think anybody bought shoes that day and they really messed up the store.”

Seating charts and entrance fee 'Viva Elvis': The official Aria resort site, the location for the 'Viva Elvis' show, has published the seating chart and entrance fee for the production. The theater will hold 1800 seats and is divided in two levels. The ticket price may look high, but these are regular prices for a top production in Las Vegas. The price including a reservation fee and 10% entertainment tax is as follows: $114(€76), $143(€96), $170(€115) and $198 (€133). The show will start on December 18 in pre-premiere. The official VIP premiere with Priscilla on the guest list is not known at this moment. Richard Marx to turn on Graceland Christmas lights: Richard Marx will throw the switch to light up Elvis Presley's Graceland for the holidays. Marx and a group of children from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will switch on the holiday light display at Graceland on November 20. Cirque Du Soleil Shows to tour Europe with "Elvis 2010": The Variety site mentions a new Elvis Presley venture for 2010:"The following year [2010] will bring ... a touring version of the [Vegas resident] Elvis show to play Europe." The working title is "Elvis 2010". A previous CXK press-release mentions "One new Elvis Presley Project will open each year from 2009-2015".

Viva Elvis opens on December18 in Las Vegas. The show will fuse dance and acrobatics, live music and iconic tracks, nostalgia and modernity, high technology and raw emotion. The choreographer is Michael Paterson.

While he is most famous for his collaborations with Madonna and Michael Jackson, Paterson has also worked in the performing arts. In 2006, he staged a '50s style revival of Massenet's Manon for Los Angeles Opera.

Diehard Elvis fans will recognize his oversized belt buckles covering the exterior of Cirque du Soleil's Elvis Theater. The interior's decor is a nod to the Elvis years at The International (now the Hilton), which was built by Kirk Kerkorian, the ageless lion of MGM Mirage. More Elvis hair at auction: A strand of hair from the late Elvis Presley, saved by his personal barber, is to be auctioned in Wiltshire. Homer Gill Gilleland toured with Elvis for more than 20 years. He dyed the singer's hair black and then cut it, saving strands in a towel. Friends of Mr Gilleland said he would then bundle up the towel, with hair inside, and take it home in a bag. The piece of hair is expected to fetch up to £250 at the auction in Devizes on 14 November. After Elvis's death in 1977, Mr Gilleland is said to have started selling strands of the hair in a souvenir shop on the street opposite the singer's home Graceland in Memphis in the US. The strand currently up for auction was given to Thomas B Morgan Jnr in 2002 by the barber. Mr Morgan worked in the Sheriff's Office of Shelby County and knew Elvis.

The hair, which comes with a certificate of authenticity, is mounted in a frame alongside a photograph of Elvis.

It will be put up for auction at Henry Aldridge and Son in Devizes along with other Elvis items including a dessert plate owned and used by him.

In November 2002, a wad of Elvis' hair sold for 115,000 US dollars (about £70,000) in an internet auction, while earlier this week a clump of Elvis' hair sold at auction in Chicago for $15,000.00 (see story dated 4 November below).

Still-electrifying Elvis sound in need of a better story: One year into its Chicago run, and with its four stellar key performers now back in place, the musical Million Dollar Quartet has lost none of its crowd-pleasing energy nor raw musical exuberance. And with some lingering song-rights issues now resolved, the show has added to its repertoire such hitherto missing Johnny Cash classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." Those crowd-pleasing ditties kill, as do many of the numbers in this hugely enjoyable show.

But with a Broadway opening just a few months away, it's now time for the show to figure out how to better showcase its principal human assets: Eddie Clendening as Elvis Presley, Rob Lyons as Carl Perkins and, especially, the eye-popping duo of Lance Guest as Cash and Levi Kreis as Jerry Lee Lewis. And better showcasing these hugely talented guys will require fixing up the book.

Based on the 1956 night when four rock 'n' roll greats jammed together at Sam Phillips' Sun Records, "Million Dollar Quartet" has thrived by offering theater-goers a quartet of powerhouse performances that go far, far beyond one's usual expectations of what singing actors in a musical revue can and will do. Guest is a superbly authentic and heartfelt Cash, and Kreis, a star ready to pop, tears up the stage as Lewis.

The good news now is that young Clendening, whose Elvis looked wobbly a year ago, has matured significantly into this difficult role, which he still plays in smartly counterintuitive fashion.

But while the book might suffice for a scrappy, music-focused, off-Loop revue, it won't fly on a big Broadway stage without major work. A few cuts and changes to the show I saw a year ago haven't improved the storytelling -- in fact, they have muddied the narrative waters by confusing flashback sequences with real time and cluttering up the opening of the show. The increased emphasis on Sam Phillips (now played in earnest but too-florid fashion by Tim Decker) also gets in the way of the audience's desire to get to the heart of the real stars: the musicians. And I include Chuck Zayas' bravura work on bass.

Much needs to be done to excise the often-crude and self-conscious way in which little biographical nuggets make their way into dialogue ("The Colonel may own 25 percent of you but..."), and hanging the main conflict of the show purely on whether Cash will re-up with Sun is not going to fly. Deeper issues of how and why these artists abandon their surrogate father (Phillips) must be probed. Stronger scenes involving Cash and Lewis are needed. And the absurdly generic character of Dyanne, the Elvis girlfriend who was there that night (and whose true identity was revealed by the Tribune last year), needs to either become a real character -- this is a real event, after all -- or hit the cutting-room floor.

No one will need this thing to become Tom Stoppard's "Rock 'N' Roll." This is a show with dynamite musical performances from masterful showmen who have now gelled into an extraordinary rock 'n' roll band -- this show should not be missed before they head east. Another Elvis launches music career: Elvis Stojko, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, released the first single from his new album "100 Lifetimes" yesterday. It marks the beginning of the skating champion's music career. His parents named him after Elvis Presley because they were fans of the singer. Stojko has chosen Presley's music as accompaniment during exhibitions.Elvis Stojko, 37, has returned to the spotlight after all but retiring following the 2002 Olympics with the release of the single, "Let Me Be The One," reports the Canadian Press. Stojko's album "100 Lifetimes" will be released later this fall. The album will be featured in a musical figure skating show titled "Rock the Ice" to be held Jan. 3, 2010 in Peterborough, Ontario. The seven-time Canadian figure skating champion and three-time world champion moved south near Guadalajara, Mexico eight years ago to do some soul-searching and last year he decided to make a return to the sport with CNE's Aerial Acrobatics and Ice Skating Show this past August. Elvis has not been sitting still these past years. Besides working on his music career since 2006, Stojko has also been dabbling in acting and in 2004 he joined the Toronto production of the stage musical "Grease", reports Canadian Press. Outside of figure skating, Mr. Stojko's biggest interest is in martial arts, a passion he shares with the original Elvis (Presley), and Elvis fans were able to see this side of him in the September 12 debut of the Bravo TV series "Star Portraits.''

Position vacant! 'Elvis" Imperials seeking new tenor: The youngest member of the 'Elvis' Imperials', tenor Gus Gaches, told ElvisMatters that he will leave the gospel quartet. The Elvis Cruise that will sail off next week will be his last performance with the group. Besides being a singer, Gus is also a producer. He has received an offer to change his musical career, but this opportunity does not allow him to keep up with the busy schedule of Elvis' Imperials. The title was officially announced today. The show is due to open in December 2009 at the ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Carl Ballantine dies: Actor Carl Ballantine, whose career spanned vaudeville, television, Vegas and Broadway, died Tuesday at his Hollywood home of natural causes. He was 92. Born Meyer Kessler, he started performing magic tricks as a kid, learning them at age 9 from his barber. By 13, he was a successful enough performer to support his family. One night a magic trick went haywire and he threw out some funny lines to cover it. Thus the Amazing Ballantine was born. Ballantine caught the tail end of vaudeville, playing the Palace in New York City and the Hippodrome in Baltimore, among other major venues.Ballantine was the first magician to play Las Vegas, appearing on a bill with Harry James, Betty Grable and Sammy Davis Jr. He made his biggest impact as a comically inept magician, billed variously as "The Amazing Ballantine," "The Great Ballantine" and "Ballantine: The World's Greatest Magician."Steve Martin presented Ballantine with the Lifetime Achievement Fellowship from the Magic Castle in Hollywood in 2007.

Ballantine appeared on the television shows of Gary Moore, Steve Allen, Milton Berle, Dinah Shore, Andy Williams, Dean Martin and Ed Sullivan. He had numerous other television credits, the best known being "McHale's Navy," on which he played Lester Gruber.He also appeared in feature films including "The Shakiest Gun in the West," "The World’s Greatest Lover," "Mr. Saturday Night" and "Speedway." The latter film starred Elvis Presley, who offered Ballantine a Cadillac. His wife, comedian Ceil Cabot, wouldn’t allow him to accept it.However, she did approve of him going to Broadway in the 1971 revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with Phil Silvers.

Elvis' hair sells at auction: A clump of hair believed to have been trimmed from Elvis Presley's head when he joined the Army in 1958 has sold for $15,000 at a Chicago auction house.Also among the 200 Elvis-related items up for grabs at the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers inChicago on Sunday was a shirt that once belonged to the King which sold for $52,000.The buyer of the hair paid $15,000 plus an additional $3,300 in auction house fees.Other items on offer included scarves, photos from the reception of Presley's 1967 wedding to Priscilla, Christmas cards he sent and lots of records. Elvis dolls and Elvis Pez dispensers numbered among the memorabilia. All the items had belonged to the late Gary Pepper, who ran a fan club and was a friend. Marty Lacker Elvis Photo Collection being auctioned: For twenty years Marty Lacker was a close friend of Elvis Presley and for a number of years was his right hand man or as Elvis and The Memphis Mafia called it, “The Foreman”. Through those years Marty took some great candid pictures of Elvis and the MM in various situations and he was also given many pictures by other people who shot them.  There are some great never before seen pictures of various places and times that Elvis and the guys enjoyed within those 20 years.  He also has a couple of pictures of Elvis’ jewelry that Elvis gave to Marty as well as pictures that include a few other stars that knew Elvis taken with Elvis or the guys with them.We are calling them a collection because Marty has decided to sell all 210 pictures, one of the largest photo collections related to Elvis and he is selling them as a total 210 picture package.  This is not a sale of individual pictures.   Over 98 percent of the pictures are casual candids just a few are professionally posed pictures.  They are both 8x10’s and snapshot size.  It is a great mixture and one that any fan or Elvis or photograph devotee would love to have.

Elvis Remixes #1 in Italy: Elvis Presley n.1 in the Italian album record sales chart. A dream that could become true for the first time in history for thousands of Italian fans of the King of Rock’n’Roll, 32 years after his death. On the 30th of October the new official Elvis’s album “Re:Mixes” will be released and since days an unstoppable word of mouth has been spreading all over the Internet to go to buy the record in the shops on the day of the release or the day after, so that the highest possibile number of copies sold will concentrate in the same week and be counted for the official album sales chart. If many copies of the new album will be bought in those two days (October 30th and 31st), there are serious chances that Elvis Presley’s new album “Re:Mixes” will enter the album chart straight at n.1.

“The number one in the chart would be a fantastic and historical event – people say at Milan’s official Elvis’s fan club “One Night With Elvis”, among the leaders of the word of mouth. - This news would go around the world and would make all Italian fans pride. 24 Karat Hits And Elvis Is Back On SACD And 45 Vinyl: Steve Hoffman posted on his website that the albums "Elvis 24 Karat Hits" & "Elvis Is Back" will be re-issued on Super Audio CD and 45 vinyl. This is his posting: Don't know if this is a secret or not but the "Elvis 24 Karat Hits" album that I compiled for DCC back in the 1990's is coming out again on vinyl (12" 45 RPM) and SACD dual layer by Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions. "Elvis Is Back" (as wonderfully engineered by Bill 'DC to light' Porter in RCA-Victor's "Nashville Sound Studio B") is going to be reissued on both as well. I will be doing the "Elvis 24 Karat Hits" remastering at AcousTech/Record Tech with Kevin Gray, from scratch again and it looks to be a bear of a job. Great music though.

Elvis's popularity stifled by poor management and blinkered record company marketing: Several years ago, music writer Brian W. Fairbanks wrote a thoughtful article about Elvis’ pervasive presence in society, “Elvis is Everywhere”.  In it, Fairbanks directed criticism at both Colonel Parker and RCA........ His unrivaled popularity, even in death, is proof that talent and charisma are more important to stardom than marketing or management. Elvis had the worst manager of them all in the form of Colonel Tom Parker, a con man to whom many give undue credit for Presley’s success. But Parker latched on to Presley only after the star had conquered the South in ways unseen since the Civil War. Parker rode Presley’s coattails to glory while creating hurdles that his client had to overcome.

Hollywood’s manipulative and destructive claws would have been a cozy, mild-mannered hour of Christmas carols rather than the dynamic showcase for Elvis’s talents that it became.

Nor did RCA Victor, the record company that bought his contract from Sun Records, provide him with much support. The label treated its biggest star as little more than a steady source of predictable profits. Knowing his records would always sell a minimum number of copies, the company rarely gave his albums and singles the promotional push that would have increased his existing fan base. Until his death, his RCA contract required him to crank out three albums a year at a time when major artists were considered prolific if they released only one in the same time period. With Presley product flooding the market, it’s little wonder that after 1972’s “Burning Love,” his singles consistently failed to crack the top ten and his albums stalled below the half million mark needed for gold certification. Elvis tumbles down list of Top Earning Dead Celebrities: While it was no surprise that Michael Jackson surpassed Elvis on this year's Forbes list of the Top Earning Dead Celebrities, Elvis placing at #4 was a surprise as were the top two positions: Yves Saint Laurent was the highest-earning dead celebrity last year, making $350 million (£213 million), according to the annual list compiled by Forbes.com.The fashion designer was followed by the composers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein with $235 million, and Michael Jackson at $90 million.Elvis Presley, who has topped the list seven times since its creation in 2001, was fourth with $55 million. Matthew Miller, the editor of the list, forecast that Jackson would rise in the coming year. “He will make tens of millions because he has lucrative publishing rights and rights to all his memorabilia,” he said.
