Remembering Myrna Smith: Elvis fans have all been shocked and saddened by the passing of Myrna Smith on Christmas Eve.
Myrna's daughter-in-law Candi Smith sent this to EIN,
"Thank you for your message! I will pass it on to Myrna's son Martin. We are truely sad. We had a pretty good gathering around Myrna as she passed. We sang Christmas carols and had Elvis gospel music playing for her. Silent Night will not be the same to my husband and I.
Thank you for your support and the support of the fans. We have been reading a lot of the cards that were sent to the hospital and are truely moved. Myrna is a great lady and will live in our hearts forever.
We are preparing a family letter to the fans, the fans are truely amazing!!!
- Candi Smith.
No Funeral Service for Myrna.
Myrna's friend Carole reports, "I've received inquiries asking about sending flowers for Myrna. Myrna's body is being cremated. There is no funeral or service or viewing, & Myrna's ashes are not being buried or interred.
Myrna's brother advised he will take the urn with Myrna's ashes home & place it on the mantle next to her mother's urn. For those who want to do something, I believe Myrna would most like a charitable donation made in her honor.
Myrna was a very giving person & always thinking of others. Most Elvis fans give to charity or belong to a fan club that supports one or more charities. Since the fans are the ones who helped Myrna, I think she would be proud to have donations made to fan club supported charities in her honor/memory.
And, since the fans are the people who took on the role of Myrna's family & helped her, the fan clubs & fans can post the information regarding anything done in Myrna's honor &, thus, keep her Elvis Family informed. I never discussed this with Myrna, so the above are simply my thoughts, based on having known her.
Carole Drexler"

Elvis Presley, 2010's "Most Dangerous Autograph": Forgeries of well-known entertainment, sports and historical figures such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, John F. Kennedy and Babe Ruth top the year's "Most Dangerous Autographs" lists compiled by experts at PSA/DNA Authentication Services of Santa Ana, California, the world's largest autograph authentication company.
Buyers beware: many alleged Babe Ruth autographs are bogus, many purported Elvis Presley signatures should be marked "return to sender." Over half of the signatures of some famous sports, historical and entertainment figures submitted in 2010 to PSA/DNA were judged to be fakes. Elvis Presley topped the PSA/DNA lists of "the most dangerous autographs" of the year.
"This past year, our experts reviewed over 200,000 autographs submitted by collectors and dealers worldwide. PSA/DNA does not often receive obvious forgeries, so if our rejection rate for a particular autograph, such as Elvis Presley, approaches or exceeds 50 percent, you can only imagine how high that percentage might be in the overall marketplace," Orlando cautioned.
Information about the deceptive autographs will be available online at PSA (http://www.psacard.com) next month.
According to PSA/DNA, these are the "most dangerous autographs" the past year:
1) Elvis Presley
2) The Beatles
3) John F. Kennedy
4) Marilyn Monroe
5) Michael Jackson
"With his recent passing in 2009 at the age of 50, Michael Jackson forgeries flooded the marketplace in 2010," Orlando said. "Prices for authentic Jackson autographs generally range from $200 for signed piece of paper to $1,000 or more for a signed photograph."

Myrna Smith passed away Christmas Eve: It is with great sadness that we have to report that Myrna Smith passed away on Christmas Eve 2010 around 11.49pm. EIN was lucky enough to spend some time with Myrna when she was in Australia touring with the TCB Band. She was an absolute delight to socialise with, always full of life, happiness and a wonderful positive person to be around.
Myrna Smith was a key member of the group 'The Sweet Inspirations' who were founded back in the fifties by Cissy Houston.
Over the years the group sang backup vocals for a series of key artists such as Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield and even Van Morrison.
The "Sweets" started touring with Elvis in summer 1969 after he decided to incorporate some Gospel-Soul into his basically rock'n'roll Las Vegas comeback shows.
The core group became Myrna Smith, Estelle Brown, Sylvia Shemwell (who died in 2001 after a stroke), along with new member Portia Griffin.
While performing on the 'Elvis: The Concert' European tour in March this year, Myrna developed pneumonia which eventually led to kidney failure and a stroke. She died in Canyon Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, LA.
Another key member of Elvis' great legacy leaves us way too soon.
Myrna Smith will be greatly missed.

Myrna Smith Interview with EIN: It is with great sadness that we report that Myrna Smith passed away on Christmas Eve 2010. Myrna Smith was one of the original Sweet Inspirations, the backing group who sang with Elvis in concert from 1969 until the end.
She has also worked with stars from Aretha Franklin to Van Morrison and has provided the world with some of the best soulful harmonies that have ever been recorded.
In 2004 EIN's Piers Beagley interviewed Myrna Smith when she was in Australia along with the TCB Band. She was an absolute delight to spend time with, always full of life and happiness.
She talked in depth about her time with Elvis and also how she introduced a young Lisa Marie to Michael Jackson.

Elvis, June 1977, the Final Curtain: We have received more reader feedback about the Final Curtain release, as well as whether the CBS TV 1977 special should be released at all.
Here is a perceptive comment from EIN contributor Lon – and below our 2006 spotlight on whether ‘Elvis In Concert’ should be officially released – now with new reader feedback...
>>> I disagree that the CBS TV Special does not capture any of Elvis' final glory. His version of ‘Hurt’ is amazing. His ‘How Great Thou Art’ is Amazing. And I've always been moved by his version of Early Morning Rain in the Special (more than the version on the soundtrack released on record). Sure Elvis didn't look great in the special. But he went out and faced the lights and cameras and overall did a good job. This is where his "realness" shines through. Elvis was nervous. He was very much human and it shone through. And to me I leave the experience loving him more.
Part of me wishes Elvis had been able to be more open with everyone about his illnesses. He would have had an easier time today with Facebook and Twitter communicating directly with the fans. Elvis was a tough guy and didn't want to admit his sickness and his colon issues. That's understandable -- just look at the ridicule and jokes you read on blogs from Dr. Nick's recent comments about Elvis dying.
Here's the bottom line - Elvis faced the cameras and put on two shows that had some very strong points. The issue really isn't whether ‘Elvis in June 1977’ is "good enough" for release. The issue is are we as Elvis fans "good enough" to watch the shows at face value. Is EPE "good enough" to let us remember our hero and the fact that he truly was human.
Merry Christmas to Elvis - rest in peace! – Lon.

'Elvis In Concert' 1977 TV special; Should it be released officially? There is always a heated debate as to whether Elvis' final TV special should be released. Should we accept Elvis with the sadness & pain of his last concerts, or do we agree with EPE's policy of glorifying the god-like Elvis mega-star and deny that anything changed after 'Aloha'?
Some fans scream YES for the release of 'Elvis In Concert', yet they are often labelled as idiots for wanting Elvis' good clean image once again vilified.
In this stimulating article, Gary V explains why most of us are in fact deluded!

Peter Mars 'Elvis Art' in the UK: Peter Mars is one of the greatest exponents of 20th century American Pop Art, and in collaboration with EPE he has created a series of stylish Elvis Presley art.
The giclée prints of the ‘The King of Rock ’n Roll’ see a fascinating Warholesque influence mixed with Mars’s unique, punchy style and poignantly features an edition size of just 75 signed prints to mark Elvis’ 75th birthday year. The four limited editions are entitled with phrases taken from the iconic Presley song ‘A Little Less Conversation’ and the portfolio, when purchased as a set of four, includes a hand-signed mixed media original work from the artist.
Mars, who has been creating Pop Art works for the past 20 years, became captivated by the media phenomenon of Elvis Presley and began exploring Elvis imagery, text and photography, combining these elements into his unique artistic vision. This imagery caught the attention of Priscilla Presley who gave him unrivalled access to iconic photographs of Elvis and a selection of private photographs from their archives.
Mars said: "If I had only Elvis to work on for the rest of my career, he would fill my days. His legacy is daunting.
|
|
If you look at the collaborations between Warhol and Basquiat, you will understand what my art is about.
In the mid-to-late 80s, with the death of these two leaders, I felt this was my place. I was coming up right behind them and I would start at the end of their trail. This was and is Pop Art."
The works are on display at Castle Galleries branches in Regent Street, Leamington, and in Bards Walk, Stratford, until mid-February. Go here for more information.

Saturday 25 December 2010 ..................... Well it's CHRISTMAS TIME pretty baby . . . . |
The staff at EIN wish all of our readers a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year!
If Everyday Was Like Christmas
(words & music by Red West)
I hear a choir
Singing sweetly somewhere
And a glow fills my heart
I'm in peace with the world
As the sound of their singing fills the air
Oh why can't every day be like Christmas
Why can't that feeling go on endlessly
For if everyday could be just like Christmas
What a wonderful world this would be
I hear a child
Telling Santa what to bring
And the smile upon his tiny face
Is worth more to me than anything
Merry Christmas everybody!

EIN feedback about Elvis and the final curtain: EIN received plenty of feedback regarding the article below, most believe that EPE should provide better quality to fans (i.e. felt let-down by the basic ‘ON Tour’ re-release) and point out that bootleggers would not exists if the product was already released officially.
A lot of respondents of course praised the work that FTD do in servicing the collector’s market in that respect.
Below are a few salient view-points…
➢ Bootleggers are far more in tune with the core Elvis fans and they've been delivering better product as far back as when RCA was pumping out hits collections in the 80's.
➢ The main problem with the 'Final Curtain' release is not its quality, which I am led to believe is outstanding but with the fact that such footage is not owned by the producers which in any language makes it a 'bootleg'. As you say, there is no doubt that eventually EPE will release the concert in it's original format and therefore are now attempting to stop anyone taking away their future revenue. Again, I do not blame them for that. What I do find strange is why Boxcar did not approach EPE with a copy of the said package and come to an arrangement with them. Perhaps a little give and take could have resulted in a compromise benefiting all.
➢ EPE sadly, in their role as the managers of Elvis' legacy, have continued Col Tom Parker's legacy of treating Elvis like a cash cow and the Elvis fans as dimwits who will sell out cash for whatever crumbs they care to release.

Ernst Jorgensen, the Elvis Legacy and what next - Elvis Anthology? : Record executive Ernst Jorgensen has made it his life's work to rebuild Presley's image through various box sets, including the latest and most massive: 'The Complete Elvis Presley Masters.'
Before Jorgensen was hired in 1991, from his post as managing director for RCA's European-based parent company BMG, label executives treated Presley's catalog as little more than a cash cow. For years the company issued haphazardly conceived, quickly assembled compilations such as 1978's "Elvis — A Canadian Tribute," built around songs by Canadian songwriters that Presley had recorded, and "Guitar Man," a 1981 release of his country songs as posthumously remixed by longtime Presley producer Felton Jarvis.
Since Jorgensen has been in charge of organizing Presley reissues — a job he originally expected might last a year or two — a series of box sets have been released covering his studio output from the '60s and '70s and another gathering the songs he recorded for the 31 movies he starred in. He also coordinated 2002's "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits," a 31-track compilation that spent three weeks at No. 1 and remained on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for 99 weeks. |
|
When the RCA catalog came under Sony Music's Legacy Recordings division after the 2004 merger of the companies, it set the stage for the release in October of what represents Jorgensen's crowning achievement: "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters," a 30-CD set that brings together all 711 master recordings issued during Presley's lifetime, in the order he recorded them. Three of those CDs are filled with more than 100 rarities consisting of alternate takes, live performances and studio chatter between Elvis and his fellow musicians.
"It may have been the Mt. Everest of my life," said Jorgensen, who grew up in Europe preferring Presley to his English counterpart, Cliff Richard, and the Rolling Stones to the Beatles. "But it was worth the climb, and the view from the top is staggering."
Even Jorgensen understands that something this monumental — it sells for $749 exclusively at CompleteElvis.com — won't be for every Elvis fan. But the old thinking hasn't entirely disappeared.
"They're selling it as a limited edition, but the first edition was too limited," he said. "They made 1,000 copies and they sold out immediately. Now they're doing another run of about the same number.
"The idea of having Elvis Presley's career in a format where everybody who really wants to can know what that career was about is a thrill to me." And Jorgensen's not about to say every track on it is as good as every other.
"You cannot like everything over an 800-track repertoire. That's impossible, and that's not the point here," he said. "We wanted to make it available, to make sure there is a document of his entire career."
Ernst also lobbies for a reconsideration of the conventional wisdom that Elvis traded the uniquely creative spirit he exhibited in his first recordings for Sun Records in Memphis and then for RCA in the '50s for fame and fortune through a raft of mediocre or worse films that his manager, Col. Tom Parker, forced upon him in the '60s.
"It's true those movies weren't always good," Jorgensen said. "But it's important to recognize that 'Viva Las Vegas,' 'Return to Sender' and 'Can't Help Falling in Love' were all movie songs that were very well executed. The one who doesn't know Elvis' catalogue inside out will find some great stuff that they had no idea existed."
Jorgensen, however, has attained what he sought so long to grasp. Which raises the question: After you've scaled Everest, where do you go next?
"I don't see this as the closing of a chapter," he said, "but it was one of maybe three or four things I wanted to do before doing something else in life. ... Another great thing would be a documentary, like the Beatles did with their 1996 TV series 'Anthology.' I love it — it's totally fascinating. It would be great to create a visual document of his career as well."
Jorgensen by no means expects he's done with Elvis now that "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" is finally behind him. He's now at work on a book-CD project following Presley's days touring the South in 1954-55 with the " Louisiana Hayride," and when he's not occupied with all things Elvis, Jorgensen also operates a niche record label called Follow That Dream that issues long out-of-print music titles.
"It's a neat side thing to do," he said. "It's not going to impress the world, but it pleases me."

Wednesday 22 December 2010 .....................only 3 sleeps until Santa brings your baby back to you!! |
June 1977 and Elvis was facing his Final Curtain: The last few months of Elvis’ life are ones of sadness, where fans can so easily observe the marvellous spark of Elvis’ life fading away all too quickly. Instead of Elvis being given time off and medical treatment that he so obviously needed, Elvis was still being overworked ‘on-tour’ by a manager who was flogging his horse to death. And most likely only to pay off his ever-mounting gambling debts (see EIN’s Spotlight The Dark Side Of Colonel Parker).
While a large number of fans are rightly not interested in the sadness of Elvis' final months, there is a core-group that are fascinated in this period of emotional turmoil as Elvis still managed to turn in some fine performances for his adoring fans. The final CBS TV special however sadly does not capture any of Elvis’ final glory (Hell, they even left out ‘Unchained Melody’!) but it also misses out on any of the emotional roller-coaster of Elvis facing that final curtain.
Fans who are interested in this period - and still love to hear Elvis singing his heart out in those final concerts - do surely deserve a proper in-depth look into these final months, such as with a 400-page book, with soundboard CDs, home-video of Elvis’ final concerts and of course the CBS TV tapes, hopefully with a better edit than the final TV special.
Set in a proper context, and compassionately written so as to not only explain the ups & downs but also the effect of Ginger Alden upon Elvis’
|
|
moods, it would help clarify how everything was falling apart on Elvis while he struggled to keep going - and at the same time put on great shows for his fans. Sadly EPE will never ever do this, or do this properly. It is highly likely that in the end they will release 'In Concert' BUT in its original form with no money put in to re-edit it to a proper documentary about Elvis' final months. (Thus maximising their profit.)
While EIN supports and celebrates EPE’s best ideas, at times it seems pretty disgraceful the way they can treat fans which such disregard. I mean, fancy not even bothering with ‘Johnny B Goode’ on the recent ‘Elvis On Tour’ DVD re-release (you & I can find Chuck Berry, what was their excuse!?) and also not even 5 minutes of new outtakes as a bonus!
So as most fans know, here we have a company (‘BOXCAR’ – How Colonel Parker must be laughing now!) who is trying to present a massive project on Elvis’ final months for a small group of hardcore fans in a way that EPE never would.
The print run mentioned is only 1,500 copies, which will never dent any of EPE’s final "General Public release" of the 1977 CBS show.
Several Elvis News websites have been threatened by EPE lawyer's letter for posting "advertisements" about this release. EIN questions exactly 'What is the legal definition of what constitutes an advertisement?' And 'When is a 'news item' an advertisement?' Like EIN, most Elvis news sites post worldwide news which we work hard on to gather about Elvis. We are not paid for these news items as we would be if they were advertisements as described.
|
|
Note that EIN does not sell any bootlegs and being in Australia we are miles away from any "Bootleg" action. We also do not support bootleggers since they do deprive songwriters & musicians of their well-deserved earnings.
We also strongly support FTD for all they do in putting out great product to the fans and beating Bootleggers at their own game.
BUT after all, if the product was Officially released then the Bootleggers would go out of business without the need of lawyer's involvement. And guess what? EPE earnt $60 MILLION from Elvis's trademark last year - and all from Elvis' adoring fans.
Click here and send EIN your thoughts on this tricky topic.

SONY show their real colours?! While it is 'only marketing spiel' it is a little disappointing that Elvis' label SONY has been flogging Michael Jackson's new LP with the catch-phrase 'The Greatest Artist Of All-Time'!
EIN contributor Brian Quinn reports. "I could not believe my ears last night whilst watching 'Coronation Street' (the UK Soap Opera). During the interval an advertisement was shown for the latest Michael Jackson Album and in it he is shown with a crown on his head whilst it is announced 'The Greatest Artist Of All-Time'. I would not have minded this had his record label not been Sony, the same as Elvis'."
Brian Quinn points out that "No wonder Elvis' latest records are not selling so well - Jackson (in death) has stolen his thunder with the compliance of SONY."
However EIN believes that in the end Jackson will never steal Elvis' crown. Jackson's first posthumous-released album - (specially timed for Christmas mass-sales) is totally under-performing while Elvis could still top the charts worldwide twenty-five years after his death!
Jackson's performance has a long way to go before it goes anywhere near outstripping Elvis' amazing legacy. (see EIN Jackson/Elvis spotlight here)

Elvis Producer Steve Binder In LA - January 7: As one of the greatest musical moments in television history, Elvis’ comeback was not just entertainment, it was the kick-start for the revitalization of a career. And, behind it all was influential director and producer Steve Binder. In 1968, Binder directed and produced the NBC television event; “Elvis” (now commonly referred to as the “’68 Comeback Special”). In celebration of what would have been Elvis’ 76th birthday, Binder will share his memories about the making of the special, share clips from the program and discuss what it was like to work with “the King.” Additionally, he’ll also discuss his work on the “T.A.M.I Show” and the now historical “Diana Ross in Central Park.”
A post–discussion question and answer session will immediately follow and Binder will sign copies of “Elvis: ‘68 at 40: Retrospective”, just released in paperback.

‘Good To Be Back’ new Import CD: Gravel Road is back again, and delivers a fantastic release that is every bit as good as our highly acclaimed ‘Return of the Prodigy’. The December 13th, 1975 is widely accepted as one of the finest later-period Presley shows available on soundboard. Yes, the punk lounge rock feel of the ’69 shows was now gone, but in its place were a warmth and an intimacy that were just as captivating in their own way.
Our man was in top form vocally in late ’75 (just listen to his sensational vocals on ‘How Great Thou Art’), and the December 13th, ’75 Midnight Show stands out as one of the finest from this engagement. This show was the first soundboard to be released on bootleg back in ’91, causing quite a sensation at the time. The technology used for working on vintage recordings have improved greatly in the years since then, and Gravel Road has used the latest version of the renowned Oxford / ProTools technology to work on this show. |

The results are it’s an obvious sound upgrade that makes this remarkable show shine that much more -- Just like you’ve come to expect from us with ‘Prodigy’. It’s also interesting to point out that this release is more complete than the aforementioned ’91 release (which had several edits).
‘Good To Be Back’ is a title that really captures the sentiment of the show, since Elvis clearly enjoyed being back on stage again following his August ’75 hospital stay and subsequent three months of rest. He’s relaxed and in a great mood, and he delivers several fantastic performances, with one of the highlights being a beautifully sung ‘Just Pretend’.
This new Gravel Road release is a true keeper. Presented in a stunning digi-pack with numerous photos from the actual show, memorabilia related to this engagement, intelligently written liner-notes packed in a 28 page booklet. As an extra, a special limited “Concert Tour ’75 Photo Folio” as it was available during the tours and Vegas shows in the 70's with some totally new color photos in high quality from the '75 Tours. This album is one of those rare releases that you just got to have.
It’s made with great professionalism and love for Elvis, and this shines through in every single detail of this release. ‘Prodigy’ was sold out within weeks of its release. Order ‘Good To Be Back’ now to avoid disappointment.

"American Idol" Carly Smithson joins the Vegas 'VIVA Elvis' Show: “American Idol” contestant Carly Smithson will join the cast of Cirque du Soleil’s “Viva Elvis,” in perfromances from last weekend.
The Irish singer was a sixth-place finalist on the show’s spring of 2008 season, won by David Cook. She has since been part of the rock band We Are The Fallen.
Smithson will not receive any special billing in the Elvis tribute and was not brought in to pump up ticket sales, a Cirque spokeswoman says.
Artistic director Gene Lubas “selected her based on her performance, not her name,” says the show’s publicist, Ann Paladie.
“We will not be advertising Carly as the star of the show,” she adds. “None of our shows have "stars" as such.”

"Burning Love" New Video from 'Viva Elvis - The Album': As the Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva Elvis' show celebrates one year of performances a new video has been released combining the real Elvis from 'Aloha from Hawaii' with footage from the actual 'Viva Elvis' show.
Sadly this is one of the tracks that works least well on the 'Viva Elvis' album. The Video however is well-worth seeing!

New FTD Release Error: Following on from the 'Elvis (aka Fool)' Classic Album Disc 2 track error ('Padre' was repeated) is the latest one as featured on FTD release "Chicago Stadium". The track numbers on Disc 1 do not match the song line-up. 'See, See Rider' is shown on the cover as track 1, but on the disc it is actually track 2. And by the time you get to the 'Closing Vamp' you are two numbers out. 'Closing Vamp' listed as track 22 but actually track 24.
Disc Two is a behind from track 12 onwards, it should be 'What'd I Say/Johnny B. Goode' but is 'Early Mornin' Rain'. It seems those medleys cause track point issues for FTD but that can't be used as an excuse on disc 1.
As EIN contributor Tony Stuchbury points out, "Heck, I can make a CDR of this and correct it so why can't they be bothered to get it right in the first place?!"
This CD was Mastered by Lene Reidel who has previously made major mistakes with her FTD work.

Will We See Elvis In New Movie Role?: The time could be approaching where we get to see Elvis starring in a movie alongside the likes of James Dean, John Wayne or Marilyn Monroe?
George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, is reported to have already bought the film rights of deceased film legends such as Orson Welles, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, with the aim of bringing them back to life on the big screen.
Lucas has been buying up the film rights to dead actors in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together, so you'd have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck alongside today's stars.
A similar concept to the 'cross-era' technology has been trialled in the recent 'Tron' movie, in which 61-year-old actor Jeff Bridges appears alongside his much younger self.
Whether or not EPE, Fox, Warner and whoever else will allow Elvis to be used for such an historic project remains to be seen, but I hope that they don't scupper any attempts and one day the film idea becomes a blockbuster reality.
Surely with a legacy including 'Harum Scarum' and 'Clambake', Elvis' 31 dramatic movies are enough to keep everyone happy?

Elvis' backing-singer Sherill Nielsen Passed Away: Donnie Sumner reports that "I regret to inform you that MY FRIEND Sherrill (Shaun) Nielsen passed away Friday morning at about 11:00 A.M. Sherrill fought a good fight and has now received his new body. I will miss MY FRIEND. Remember Brenda in your prayers.
I haven't heard about the funeral arrangements yet, but Sherrill and Brenda have a home in Cullman AL and I assume the memorial service will be in Cullman I'll let all of my friends know as soon as I am informed.
God bless you all, Your friend Donnie Sumner.
Shaun (Sherrill) Nielsen was an undisputed legend in gospel music, is the only person to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as a member of 3 different groups: The Speer Family, The Imperials and The Statesmen. In 1966, Shaun’s first meeting with Elvis as a backup singer on his gospel album “How Great Thou Art”, led to their friendship and an eventual contract drawn up by Elvis himself. This contract stated that Shaun and the group VOICE would open his shows, sing back up on his records and write songs for his publishing company. Sherrill also appeared with JD Sumner in "The Masters Five" group (see image right) in 1988.
Sherrill is recognised by millions as the singer on Elvis’ recording of “Softly As I Leave You” on which Elvis does a recitation behind Sherrill's vocal. His vocal of “O Sole Mio” as the introduction to “It’s Now or Never” is also featured on Elvis’ last album titled “In Concert”. Earlier this year Nielsen had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

John Lennon And Elvis: It was "Thirty Years Ago Today" - On December 8th 1980 John Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment. In commemoration,
LA Times music critic Robert Hilburn remembers discussions with John Lennon
about life and Elvis...
>> In mid 1980 John Lennon raced into Yoko Ono's home office in the mammoth old Dakota building with a copy of Donna Summer's new single, "The Wanderer." "Listen!" Lennon shouted as he put the 45rpm on the record player. "She's doing Elvis!" I didn't know what he was talking about at first. The arrangement felt more like rock than the singer's usual electro-disco approach, but the opening vocal sure sounded like Donna Summer to me. Midway through the song, however, her voice shifted into the playful, hiccuping style Elvis had used on so many of his early recordings.
"See! See!" John shouted, pointing at the speakers "That's Elvis!"
Lennon plugged in one of his prized possessions a vintage jukebox. He then punched one Elvis Presley record after another and bopped around playfully. |
|
Lennon ended up spending so much time talking about Elvis and other favorites from the 1950s that I was afraid we weren't going to get to the Beatles and his solo career.
As Elvis sang "Don't Be Cruel" in the background, John recalled his first and only meeting with our mutual rock hero. It was a story he relished sharing as much as he did his Beatles memories.
"It was probably 1965 and we had a break in L.A. during a tour. We went up to his house and we were terrified. I can't remember the first moment I saw him, but Elvis looked great. We started singing some of his songs. That's what we always did when we met Chuck Berry or Carl Perkins or any of them."
I asked if Elvis had known how big the Beatles were and if he had felt any hint of competition.
"Are you kidding?" John replied with a laugh. "Elvis knew damn well who we were -- from the word 'go.' He was terrified of us and the English movement because we were a possible threat to him. To us, Elvis was a god. We'd like to beat his record and become the champion, but we would always give Elvis credit. It always hurts and infuriates me when Mick Jagger puts Elvis down. Maybe he's jealous because Elvis was the original body man in rock and it's too near to Mick's game for him to admit that Elvis' movements were at least as good as his and that maybe Elvis could sing a damn sight better than he could."
We had such a good time over the three days that Lennon invited me to his and Sean's birthday party. I knew what the perfect birthday present for John was. I had mentioned in the studio that there was a great new Elvis photo book by Alfred Wertheimer, who had spent a couple of weeks with Elvis around the time of "Hound Dog" in 1956. John hadn't seen it.
I didn't want to bother John, so I left the book with the doorman.
Two months later Lennon was dead."

"Humperstink" says Marty Lacker: After our recent Engelbert Humperdink new item (see below) Elvis close friend Marty Lacker sent EIN this note.
>> Once again, we get an over the hill artist like Humperdink using Elvis to make false claims to make himself look good and get some publicity, albeit false and stupid publicity. Just as Tom Jones has been doing recently they have used Elvis to get what they haven't been able to do on their own for years, make the media pay attention to them.
For Humperstink's information, Elvis was wearing high collars on his shirts years before '72 and before anyone paid attention to Humper. I know this for a fact because I designed some of his wardrobe for two pictures he did on '64. As for sideburns, Elvis had them in the 40's and 50's including at Humes High School which I attended with in him in '53.
Also inform Bertie that Elvis and us were going to see shows in Vegas long before he ever played there and Elvis finally got around to him. If he's insinuating that Elvis came to see him to learn how to perform then he's as full of bull as Jones is who made the same ignorant statement. Maybe he should have gone to see Elvis first so he could learn how to really entertain people.
Let's see which came first, 1954 or '65?
Tell Humperdinky to try to get people to pay attention to him again by cutting a hit record, something he hasn't had in thirty years or more and leave Elvis out of his pursuit of it.
- Marty Lacker.
|
|
EIN Notes that these new items only go to show what an astounding Media Legacy and reputation Elvis still has more than 33 years after he "left the building".
Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdink are still performing, yet the media laps-up every tiny piece of gossip that includes Elvis' name!

Yet More RIAA Sales Awards Omitted for Elvis: EIN contributor Brian Quinn has raised the issue that 'Aloha From Hawaii' should have a RIAA Diamond Award.
According to RIAA rules, multi-disc albums are counted once for each disc within the album if it is over 100 minutes in length. For example, each copy of OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (running time of 134:56), and Shania Twain's Up! (145:44), both double albums, were counted twice, meaning each album was certified diamond after 5 million copies were shipped. The 100 minute requirement however does not apply to albums released in the vinyl era so double albums such as Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beatles' White Album are counted double even though their running times are under the minimum.
Two Elvis Albums e.g. 'Aloha From Hawaii' (currently 5XP) and 'Elvis In Concert' (currently 3XP) were originally released in double album format and because they were below the 100 minute rule they were disqualified for 'double sales'.
Apparently, the reason the 'Aloha' and 'In Concert' albums do not qualify |
|
for 'double' RIAA sales is that when they were released on CD post 1982 they were on 1 CD whereas the Beatles and Pink Floyd Albums were 'always' 2 album and 2 CD packages. Looks as though BMG, whilst giving good value for money to fans, were not taking care of official "Sales" business at this time.
Even allowing for the RIAA rules, surely the vinyl (double) sales should count from 1973 to 1982 when sales would have been at their greatest anyway.
'Aloha From Hawaii' should really have a Diamond Award.
EPE have just replied that they will bring the matter to Sony's attention.

Oprah Visit to Australia starts with ELVIS the Koala bear: Starting her tour of Australia yesterday Oprah Winfrey showed her acting and diplomacy skills. As more details of her Australian adventure and Sydney shows were revealed, the superstar's first encounter with the locals were X-rated: two mating koalas - one of them called ELVIS! (photo right)
"I have been here one hour and seen two koalas mating already," she said, bursting with laughter. As they say, "Elvis IS Everywhere!"
For those watching Winfrey watch the wildlife, it was a look at the media mogul up close that proved fascinating.
Guests, including 100 of her 302 audience members flown out for four shows at the Opera House, were thrilled by the closest thing to a royal visit. The TV queen had little time to luxuriate, but scheduled a gourmet barbecue prepared by Curtis Stone on Whitehaven beach for her staff and fans. Her private jet will be busy in coming days, criss-crossing the country.
Today will be lunch, surfing lessons and dolphin-spotting at Byron Bay, before her plane peels northwest for dinner at Uluru.
"The reason why I want to go to Uluru is that Paul Simon called me and said 'You must, it's not to be missed'. So now I get six hours in bed and then ... I'm trying to do it all.Which just means I'll have to come back. As I was flying in, I was thinking 'This, I could get used to'."

Elvis Presley limousine auctioned for half estimated price: There was a little less conversation... and a little more bidding yesterday as one of Elvis Presley's old motors went under the hammer.
But the Mercedes-Benz 600 Saloon Limousine only fetched £80,700 - half its estimated price.
Tim Schofield, of Bonham's in Surrey, who auctioned it, said: "The estimate was a little foolish. The car's worth £40,000 but because this one belonged to Elvis £80,700 is about right."
The seller, who has not been named, bought it in 2005 and had it exported to the UK.
At least it didn't get Returned to Vendor.

Did Engelbert Humperdinck influence Elvis' look?: Singer Engelbert Humperdinck has recently told the media that he has the high-collars and sideburns first. "I had them in 1965 and Elvis put his on in 1972! The true story is this, Elvis had a lady sketching him to find an outfit for him to go on his world tour. That's where the white jump suit came in. She designed this white jumpsuit with the high collar and the long black side-burns. She presented it to him and he went (in Elvis voice) 'Hell, that's not me, that's Engelbert Humperdinck'. So therefore you know who had it first".
Elvis and Engelbert were great friends. 'I loved the man,' he said. 'The first time I met him he had come to meet me. He came to see my show first before I went to see him. Believe me, it took me a good 10 minutes to quieten the audience down once I introduced him. He stood up and he had a cape on and he opened the cape as he stood in the booth in Las Vegas with the cape open like Batman. The audience went absolutely berserk and I said 'shhhh, this is my show'. No, I couldn't quieten them down. So I brought out some of my big gun songs to try - which worked in the end. Elvis came backstage and he said 'thank you very much, what a great show'. This is how humble he was. He said 'thank you for introducing me'. Elvis! I said 'Elvis, I can't thank you enough for being at my show'. Elvis was such a nice guy, a very nice guy."

Lisa Marie Presley is definitely moving to the UK: The daughter of Elvis Presley — who’s married to Michael Lockwood — has sold her California home for $5m and has bought an £8 million mansion near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, which is heavily guarded with staff patrolling on quad bikes. Lisa Marie's new mansion is set on 90 acres, boasts 11 bedrooms, an indoor pool and sauna and a cinema is right near the former home of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
It's no secret that Michael Jackson's ex-wife isn't too thrilled with Los Angeles these days. Lisa Marie recently said that it had "gotten dramatically worse in the last five or six years, even more shallow if that's even possible. We have found the quality of life so much more enriching and fulfilling,” she said of her love for Britain.
“The civility, the culture, the people and its beauty have reawakened me and have smoothed out some of my bleak and jagged views about people and life. I can honestly say that I am the only person who came to England for the weather.”
Lisa Marie also reportedly plans to record her third album in London, where she said the culture, people and beauty have reawakened her.

'Wild Tiger at The Hilton' New Import CD: The MxF label will soon release its new CD titled “Wild Tiger at The Hilton'' featuring Las Vegas August 22, 1974 Midnight Show audience recording. Elvis' performance is superb, still at the top if his ability he deliveries a long show which is very intense, there is a freshness that cannot be denied, Elvis was very energetic on stage, full of enthusiasm he sang with power and sensitivity, delivering a solid and heartfelt repertoire like the new song “It’s Midnight” and the classic “You Gave Me a Mountain” sang terrifically.
At the same time he worked in heavy rock songs like “Big Boss Man” and the showstopper “If You Talk In Your Sleep”. This season will be remembered for the great opening night and naturally for the Closing Nights from the numerous dialogues, but for the superb music too, Elvis looks fantastic and it is clear that despite it all the music keeps his brain active.
The sound is great an unbelievable audience recording, an early generation mono tape of extremely good quality. The mix is very clear with Elvis' vocal up in the central mix and at the same time trying a great definition to the background music. |
|
The CDs comes in a deluxe DIGIPACK, containing a collection of live photographs of the August 24 and 25 Dinner Show concerts. We love this show, it is clear we are not talking about the rough rocker of early 69/71, but in spite of some limitations and an evolution of style to a more complete musical range the man is still at the top and Elvis at the top means an unforgettable experience for those who attended the show and for those of us prepared to listen. Don’t miss it!!!!

Sri Daya Mata, Elvis' Guiding Light, dies aged 96: Sri Daya Mata, who for more than five decades was the leader of one of the Self-Realization Fellowship, Los Angeles and an ardent advocate of the healing power of meditation, died November 30th at the group’s retreat for nuns in L.A. She was 96. From 1955 until her death, Sri Daya Mata was the society’s president and spiritual leader. She presided over an organization that now has more than 600 temples, centres and retreats in 60 countries, about half of them in the U.S.
In the mid-sixties Elvis spent time at the Self Realization Fellowship, and became a friend of Sri Daya Mata, whom he affectionately referred to as ‘Mother.' Elvis' friend Charlie Hodge said that when Elvis asked Daya Mata, "Why did God make me Elvis Presley," her response was to hand him some ancient manuscripts, saying that he might find the answer to his question within them.
In Elvis' mid-sixties period of uninspiring low-grade movies it is not surprising that he would be searching for some other deeper inspiration in his life.
Sri Daya Mata noted, "If we turn our consciousness within, in deep meditation, communing with God even a little bit every day, we begin gradually to experience that love which is our real nature. Feeling love within ourselves, it is very easy to give it to others."
Larry Geller talked to EIN about Elvis and the Self-Realization Fellowship in this 2003 interview

'Elvis Is Back' for a SONY Legacy release?: Amazon sites have recently noted that there will be a Sony Legacy release of the classic 'Elvis Is Back' scheduled for January 8, 2011 release. However, while the German site indicates a RCA (Sony Music Austria) release, the UK site states a "Pid" Label release. EIN suspects the album to possibly be the first of the "Public Domain" EU Elvis releases as Elvis' 1960 recordings move into the "Public Domain" 50 year rule.
The album is of course a total classic and should be available as a genuine Sony Legacy release for everyone to buy. There is no confirmation from SONY Legacy.
The tracklist suggested is:
Make Me Know It / Fever / The Girl Of My Best friend / I Will Be Home Again / Dirty Dirty Feeling / The Thrill Of Your Love / Soldier Boy / Such A Night / It Feels So Right / The Girl Next Door / Like A Baby / Reconsider baby / Stuck On You / Fame And Fortune / It's Now Or never / A Mess Of Blues / Are You Lonesome Tonight? / I Gotta Know / Surrender / There's Always Me / Give Me The Right / It's A Sin / Sentimental Me / Starting Today / Gently / I'm Coming Home / In Your |

Wednesday 1 December 2010 - . . . . 2nd news Update |
'The Complete Elvis Presley Masters' in-depth Review: "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" 30 CD box-set collection has to be the ultimate deluxe Elvis collectors’ set, combining a massive 240-page book and every Elvis Master recording presented in one huge presentation case. The fact is that it also Sold Out before being despatched and so hardly needs a review. Plus it is damn expensive and well out of the range of most fans! Costing US$750 in the USA - plus for anyone overseas a hefty delivery charge. However it is good to hear that the popularity of the signed & numbered first run of 1000 copies has inspired SONY to produce a second edition early next year.
Such a gigantic deluxe set is difficult to comprehend until you have spent some time absorbing all its details. It is almost impossible to cover such a mammoth project properly in a small review. After all what do you get for your hard-earned money, and since we have probably bought most of these recordings umpteen times before, is this set that desirable?
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley provides a detailed in-depth review - with plenty of fabulous images - and discovers the good, and possibly bad, of this all-mighty Elvis release.

Elvis Presley’s Mercedes up at auction this week: The King of Rock and Roll’s personal Mercedes-Benz 600 is up for grabs at an auction run by Bonhams at Brooklands, Surrey. It is one of a handful of cars owned by Presley and registered in his name and has been lovingly restored. The five-door powder blue saloon has attracted a pre-sale estimate of up to £200,000.
It is being sold at the Important Motor Cars and Fine Automobilia auction at Mercedes-Benz World in Brooklands, Surrey, on December 6.
Elvis purchased the car, which was one of two Mercedes 600 he owned, in 1970 and kept it for two years before giving it to a friend, James Leroy Robertson. It was purchased by the vendor in 2005 from Robertson Motors Memphis, and exported to the UK.

UPDATED with more of YOUR Comments- 'VIVA ELVIS'- The King Butchered! CD review: After a slew of positive reviews presented on our site, EIN contributor Arjan Deelen provides another viewpoint about the new 'VIVA ELVIS' album.
He suggests that Producer Erich van Tourneau has very little affinity with Elvis’ music. And the way Tourneau has tackled this project is disrespectful towards Elvis and his original musical vision. These new versions display a lack of empathy an understanding by Van Tourneau of what Elvis and his music were all about.
Why can’t we let the guy rest in peace? Hasn’t he already achieved enough in his lifetime and even in the decades after his death
Now updated with your comments

Lisa Marie stars as Charity Ball raises US$93,000: Lisa Marie Presley watched with pride as a piece of rock and roll history was auctioned off at a ball which raised £59,000 for a UK children’s charity. Dream Factory, one of Redbridge Mayor Cllr Jim O’Shea’s charities, which makes dreams come true for sick youngsters, hosted the ball at the Prince Regent Hotel in Manor Road, Woodford Green on Saturday – with a host of famous names in attendance.

“I have done many of these events, but this evening saw the most money I have ever seen. I was astounded.”
Other celebrities who took part in the glittering evening included comedian Terry Alderton, who auctioned a day in London with the EastEnders stars Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen plus lunch for a youngster.
O’Shea said: “It was a fantastic evening. Two recipients of dreams aged eight and 22 spoke about their dreams, which was moving.
