Priscilla offended by tabloid headline: Priscilla Presley says she is offended by suggestions there is something wacky about her family. Tabloid magazines this week labelled as "kooky kabuki" her daughter Lisa Marie's marriage to musician Michael Lockwood in Japan, with both wearing kimonos. "It does offend me," Presley told AAP in Sydney. "It was not wacky in any sense of the word because you appreciate a culture and you appreciate tradition, that is wacky for somebody to say that."
Lisa Marie and Lockwood exchanged vows in a traditional Japanese ceremony on January 22, both wearing traditional Japanese costumes. It was a fourth marriage for Lisa Marie who has previously been married to Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson and Danny Keough, the father of her two children. Priscilla Presley walked her daughter down the aisle and gave her away. "The wackyness isn't on our end," said Presley. "I don't think we have ever been known to be wacky.
"Maybe having lived our whole lives in front of everyone, things might look that way but this was so well thought out and she is very happy." Presley described Lisa Marie's wedding as "beautiful". "The wedding was everything she wanted and the mood was so tranquil and very traditional in dress," she said.
Priscilla Presley arrived in Australia on Saturday for the worldwide launch of her bed linen range with Australian fashion designer Bruno Schiavi, titled The Priscilla Presley Collection. The 60-year-old was married to Elvis from 1967 to 1973 and has two children, Lisa Marie with Presley and Navarone Garibaldi with partner Marco Garibaldi. She acknowledged that Elvis, who died of a heart attack in 1977, was always going to be a big part of her life. "It was such an impactful era that I think everyone feels they own a little bit of Elvis," she said after the launch at Sydney's inner city Myer department store. "As far as separating myself, I can't really deny that was history and I was very much a part of history in that sense. "It was a great time, a great era and a great loss". What Elvis needs is an opera: Robert Sandall asks was The King's life too tragic for a musical? Given the never-ending appeal of all things Elvis - from the music to the memorabilia, and let's not forget the moon sightings - you would assume that Presley musicals must be a regular box-office earner. You might also expect that a life as studded with historic events and immortal tunes as his would have attracted some of the most illustrious names of musical theatre. Not so, however. In the 28 years since he died, there have been only two serious attempts to render the King and his catalogue on stage in Britain. The first, masterminded by the veteran pop impresario Jack Good at London's New Astoria theatre, appeared shortly after Elvis's death in 1977 and was aimed squarely at the grieving fans. A rather hurried re-telling of the life, with 82 songs attached, Elvis: On Stage was significant mainly for kickstarting the cult of the impersonators. Reviews tended to focus on the relative plausibility of Shakin' Stevens and P J Proby as the young and not-so-young Elvises respectively. The drama, such as it was, was straight off the CV, and there was little in the way of dialogue. The playwright Alan Bleasdale headed bang in the opposite direction six years later with Are You Lonesome Tonight? Bleasdale's Liverpool Playhouse production took the music as read, and focused on Presley in his declining years, portraying a reclusive fatso holed up in Graceland and contrasting this sad grotesque with the lean, mean rock and roller of the 1950s. It was a well-received and powerful drama that contained a few excerpts of Presley songs - but it was hardly a musical. Since then, the boom in stage musicals with pop themes has pretty much passed Elvis by. The most recent attempt to hitch him to the Mamma Mia! bandwagon was All Shook Up, an ambitious American farrago that grafted a selection of 24 Elvis classics, along with the plot of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, on to a love story set in Sticksville USA in the 1950s. It closed last September after only four months on Broadway. There is one clear difficulty with Elvis musicals that shun the All Shook Up route and take as their subject the man and his music. How do you reconcile the joyous exuberance of his finest songs with the claustrophobic squalor that took over his life? Ironically, it was the decision of Presley's manipulative manager Colonel Parker to sign him up for a string of shoddy film musicals that fenced him off from his audience, and precipitated his descent into cheeseburger hell. But just try to find the emotional equivalent of that in the Elvis songbook. Conveying the ruined grandeur of the poor boy from Mississippi who changed the world then lost his soul and died on the lav is a tough call for something as cheerful sounding as "Elvis: The Musical". This guy, you begin to suspect, requires nothing less than an original operatic score to himself. In the absence of that, maybe, just maybe, This is Elvis: Viva Las Vegas! has the answer. This new musical, which is currently touring the country before - demand permitting - transferring to the West End in the summer, looks closely at the only remotely happy phase of Elvis's later career. It covers his triumphant comeback on an NBC TV special in 1968 - in which he appeared clad in black leather with a 30-inch waist and a guitar - and his subsequent, disastrous installation as an uber-crooner in the International Hotel in Las Vegas in 1970. The Vegas contract was the last, and perhaps the most damaging, of the Colonel's money-driven betrayals of his dependably gullible client. While the paperwork on the deal was being signed off, Elvis was dreaming of touring the South performing outdoors with his band on the back of a flatbed truck. The tour never happened; instead the King was progressively dethroned by stage fright, prescription drugs and mountainous quantities of junk food. For the Elvis faithful however, memories are not made of this, and the new musical knows it. Thirty of the greatest hits, played by an 18-piece band, and a lead with form - Simon Bowman, whose performance as Elvis in Bleasdale's Are You Lonesome Tonight? was widely praised - are trying to keep the legend alive without losing sight of the guy who created it. If it works, it will be a first. If not, Elvis will have to stay in that limbo to which our collective creative imagination seems to have banished him: the moon. 'This Is Elvis' play review: Can there really be anything new to say about Elvis Presley? Not according to this new show but there is a lot to enjoy. This Bill Kenwright-produced musical written by Beatles biographer Philip Norman is based around Elvis's comeback television concert in 1968 following his years in movies. That concert was a success and so is this show, slight on plot as it may be. Philip Norman got the best deal with what seems just a few pages of dialogue and even that was based on co-producer Laurie Mansfield's original storyline. But why carp over what is essentially a musical show celebrating the performances of Elvis? And with Simon Bowman playing Presley, the standard is high. He has to play Presley both in that black leather comeback concert and then the following year in his successful Las Vegas appearance. The televised concert had an intimacy and rock and roll mood while the Vegas appearance showed Presley at his commercial best, dressed in white with a big band and lots of energy. How on earth Bowman can do both performances each night on tour must remain a mystery. It is one of those all-action, no prisoners portrayals that requires not only vocal talent but a physical, demanding presence. Bowman succeeds on all counts, the voice as close to Presley as you might hope, the movements like him and the mood on stage with cross-chat with the audience, pure Elvis. The first half is the more dramatic with Presley having problems with his (off-stage) wife Priscilla as well as his (off-stage) manager, Colonel Parker, both on the end of a phone. Essentially the show is leading to his first Las Vegas appearance complete with its Also Sprach Zarathustra opening and "Elvis has left the building" finale. Between, there is a generous helping of Elvis hits. The audience ends up on its feet cheering and rightly for a solo performance by Bowman that is quite remarkable. Elvis aficionados know this is the alias he used when he simply wanted to be anonymous, and this may be the only item on the market with Elvis's hand-written usage of the name! We also note that just hours after his death was announced, a man boarded a plane for Buenos Aires paying in cash and using the name Jon Burrows. You connect the dots. Money sleeve reads "$2000" and is stamped with the date "Dec. 18, 70." There are handwritten initials "MW" on it. Sleeve is NRMT and matchbook is EX-MT but missing about half of the matches . Elvis Week 2007 concert lacks innovative thought: From the desk of Elvis World's Bill E. Burk: "Last week we suggested to y'all that Robert Sillerman, EPE's relatively-new owner, should think about staging one gigantic concert during Elvis Week 2007, bringing in some top names from show biz. "Well, what was just released today is that there will be a "spectacular concert event" starring the real Elvis Presley via video, accompanied live by a large cast of singers and musicians who worked with him. In other words, a re-hash of the "Elvis in Concert" gigs produced in 1997 and 2002. One would have hoped that for the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death, which might well be the last BIG observance of this date, that EPE would have set its sights much higher". EIN Comment: Bill Burk is spot on in his observation. A major lost opportunity! And it is interesting to see EPE "stretching" Elvis Week 2007 out with an Elvis Insiders conference and the Merchandise and Memorabilia Showroom. Tapering off Elvis Week after the Candleilight Vigil has long been thought of by many as a really good idea. Manuel Cuevas instrumental with Elvis' fashions: Quite possibly the coolest collection of the week came from a 73-year-old Country & Western legend. Take that fashion snobs! I don't listen to country music, but after living in the beautiful state of Colorado for six years now, I'm embracing Western style. I wear my Frye boots all the time. I own a pair of cowboy boots. I even bought a pair of Uggs (OK, not Western, but definitely Colorado). I love my Rockmount shirts. And, if only I could afford it (up to $4,500 for a ready-to-wear outfit), I'd be buying up all of Manuel Cuevas's first New York Fashion Week line. And, then, I'd buy up all the men's line for my husband. The coolest leather jackets, shearling coats and customized denim are the height of cowboy couture.
Some fast facts on Cuevas, courtesy The Daily: In the 1960s, he was head tailor for Nudie Cohn, Hollywood's celebrated rodeo clothing designer, where he made duds for Hank Williams, Roy Rogers, John Wayne and Dolly Parton. "I've known Dolly since she was in training bras," he says. When Walk the Line became a hit song, Johnny Cash ordered nine outfits to take on the road. "I made the outfits, and he called me and said, 'I received my suits, but how come they're all black?' It just became his thing for his whole life. We were very close." Manuel was key in developing Elvis's aesthetic, beginning with the famous gold lame jacket. "It was the most horrible suit I ever made in my life...But it turned out to be his most famous look." He also made the 70s white rhinestone and fringe Vegas jumpsuits. In 1967, Manuel designed the Beatles' uniforms for the Sgt. Pepper album. "Those guys were just fun people, great kids, and everybody loved them all over the world. I could have thrown a sheet on them, and everyone would've loved it." Manuel is credited with designing not only the Grateful Dead's skull and rose logo but also the Rolling Stones tongue. "I made a pillow with the tongue image on it for Mick's birthday. Garth Brooks album sales catching Elvis: Garth Brooks' album sales now stand at 116 million to place him just behind Elvis Presley as the best-selling solo artist in history, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. While Brooks' The Limited Series, a multi-disc compilation available only at Wal-Mart and its Sam's Club stores, is not listed as a specific title for RIAA certification, the individual discs sold within the boxed set are being certified. As a result, Brooks'1998 album, Double Live, was certified 20-times platinum to catch up with the Shania Twain's Come on Over, the best-selling country album of all time. Other titles included within the boxed set and their new respective sales levels are: Sevens (9 times platinum), Scarecrow (5 times platinum) and the newly-released The Lost Sessions (double platinum). According to the RIAA's Web site, Elvis Presley's album sales now stand at 116.5 million. The guy who played Elvis is a good actor who had obviously studied hard for the role, re-enacting scenes from the '68 Special' and 'That's The way it Is' almost verbatim... He also had a strong, trained theatrical singing voice... Stage design and costumes weren't bad either, but for all of this, I never once suspended my disbelief and actually felt that this was Elvis........ And there are a lot of talky bits in Act one (on Elvis' discontent with the movies, the colonel, his marriage etc)... It's like a bizarre on stage documentary made up of anecdotes, hearsay and clichés cobbled clumsily together and delivered by people with woeful American accents..... which had my emotional pendulum swinging between 'bemused' and 'bored'.... Act two was the return to Vegas, which was, by virtue of the music, lights and action - far more lively and entertaining.... if only to look at the crowd who was really getting into it..... However, even here, there were some abject inaccuracies like Elvis introducing Joe Esposito as part of his band (singing and playing the guitar!!)..... And all because this actor had played the role of Joe throughout Act One, so I guess it would have descended into a Pantomime moment had he been introduced as anyone other than that later.... To surmise then, despite all the annoying bits, the lead (whose name I'm afraid escapes me) put in a sound, professional performance.... But when the curtain went down for the last time and a disembodied voice announced (in the now familiar bad American accent) that Elvis had left the building, the lie was really out.... because trust me... Blackwood Brothers to perform at Arcadia First Baptist Church: The Blackwood Brothers, an internationally-famous quartet, will be in concert Wednesday evening at Arcadia First Baptist Church. The Blackwood Brothers have sung with many famous singers, including Elvis Presley. When Elvis' mother, Gladys Presley died, they were asked to sing at her funeral. Among many other appearances, they were guests at the Billy Graham Crusades, The Liberty Bowl and the Presidential Prayer Breakfast. The Blackwood Brothers have recorded more than 200 albums and toured 47 countries. They won eight Grammy Awards and six Dove Awards. They were inducted into the "Gospel Music Hall of Fame" in Nashville, Tenn., in 1998. The concert at First Baptist will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The public is invited to attend. Time to bring Elvis to the public...but how best to do it: In light of the great success of Garth Brooks' 6CD box-set sold through Wal-Mart stores (500,00 sold in the first day, catapulting Garth's USA album sales to once again challenge Elvis'), Elvis Express in the UK has published an interesting article about the need to bring Elvis to the public. Elvis Express suggests a series of Elvis box-sets tied to exclusive marketing through a major chain like Wal-Mart is needed. The sets would offer Elvis recordings beyond just the usual recycled greatest hits and love songs releases.
EIN Comment: In 1999 EIN published a Spotlight Article suggesting BMG change its marketing strategy for Elvis. We argued (as we have continued to argue numerous times since 1999) that BMG's strategy of 'recycling and repackaging' has had its day. The strategy is tired with generally declining sales, although admittedly a healthy profit, as BMG owns the majority of the Elvis catalog and does not pay royalties to EPE on many tracks. While the Elvis Express concept has some merit, EIN is concerned that a number of the proposed titles will do little to reinforce Elvis' musical legacy (eg. Elvis Now, Love Letters, Good Times), and in fact may actually do some damage. We have long taken the view that BMG needs to start treating the Elvis catalog with artistic respect and not as a commodity. This is how the catalogs for The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Marc Bolan are handled. By its very nature, The Limited Box concept is likely to appeal most to established fans, not the broader music buying public. The former group is a weakness as it is "greying" and diminishing in number. To reach the latter group BMG needs to think laterally. Apart from treating the Elvis catalog with respect, BMG needs to seriously consider promoting a number of specific Elvis music genres to relevant market segments. In particular, "blues" and "soul", two rich Elvis musical genres, are largely unappreciated by the non-Elvis buying market. Wembley concert planned when Elvis died!: On part 2 of the fascinating BBC2 radio documentary, The King & I: The Colonel Tom Parker Story, Elvis' tour manager in the 1970s, Charles Stone, reveals that the day Elvis died he (Stone) had a plane ticket in his pocket to visit London to book Wembley. The trip followed a meeting between Stone, Tom Hulet and the Colonel. Stone went on to say that while the Colonel did not have a passport and couldn't travel to England, he trusted Stone and Hulet to handle affairs when Elvis was touring outside the US. The former home of the Detroit Lions most recently hosted 2006 Super Bowl activities, including Pittsburgh Steelers' practices. It's scheduled to close after a February 25th fundraising walk. The Oakland County Walk for Warmth raises money each February to help people pay their heating bills. Pontiac has said the dome would close sometime this month. It hasn't finalized plans about the future of the 132-acre site. The Silverdome has hosted many significant events, from Elvis' last stadium concert in 1975 to the 1982 Super Bowl. Pope John Paul the Second led a Mass there that drew 93-thousand people at the end of his 1987 U-S tour. (News, Source: WLNS) Graceland let me walk in Elvis' shoes: In the early 1970s, Elvis Presley recorded "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," which asked the listener to understand what it takes to live someone else's ups and downs. In June 1993, John Taylor walked Elvis's life in and around the grounds of Graceland, his home for 20 years. John says: "An Elvis fan since I was 10 years old (he died when I was 14), I knew a journey to Memphis would happen once in my life. That time came at age 29. Two things struck me almost immediately upon arriving at the infamous gates of Graceland. First, I had only seen pictures and footage of Graceland taken while Elvis was living there. His home was located deep in the woods on the outskirts of town. Not realizing the buildup of hotels, roads and souvenir shops that had taken place since his death in 1977, I was shocked to see the citylike atmosphere surrounding this once serene location. Secondly, I knew that each year one week in January and one week in August were hectic at Graceland in honor of his birthday and anniversary of his death, respectively. I hoped to avoid those crowds by arriving in June. I was awestruck at the size of the crowd waiting to get in. I probably shouldn't have been so shocked since Graceland is the second most visited historic home in America (the White House is No. 1). Each step along the way showed me a part of Graceland I had only seen in pictures. Each picture always had Elvis posing and I felt sheer excitement knowing that I was in the actual spot that he had been only years earlier. The front steps, the living room, Jungle Room, TV room, each spot I could almost see him living his rags-to-riches life. When I was there, the tour guide showed us the only horse in the stables that was at Graceland while Elvis was alive. Despite the excitement of seeing things he touched, wore, drove and flew in, it sobered me when I arrived at his gravesite. It put an exclamation point on what I had always known. Although he accomplished so much and gave his fans such thrills, 42 is a young age to die and he wasted a good part of his life. During the trek, I met dozens of people who had made multiple trips to Graceland. I remember thinking on the way home that unless Elvis returned to do a concert there, I would never return. I had already walked a mile in his shoes. Here it is 13 years later and the memories are as wonderful and vivid as they were that day". Analex Corporation, a leading provider of mission-critical professional services to federal government clients, today announced that NASA's Kennedy Space Center has added $32.7 million in new tasks to Analex's Expendable Launch Vehicle Integrated Support (ELVIS) contract. NASA has expanded the ELVIS contract tasks to include increased launch vehicle certification services. The support required includes additional Mission Analysis and Vehicle Systems Engineering to support an increased number of concurrent missions; expansion of the Launch Services Program's government mission success partnership with the United States Air Force; and additional feasibility studies for increasing launch vehicle performance capabilities for future LSP missions. Jenny Jemma Dalbin stabbed her 35-year-old partner with a pair of scissors during an argument last month about him repeatedly playing the song Burning Love. The Perth Magistrates Court heard the couple had a history of violence and domestic abuse. Dalbin was placed on a 12-month intensive supervision order. Her partner was not seriously injured and was discharged from hospital after treatment for cuts to his head, back and legs. Recently, a number of auction houses have pulled Elvis items from their lists as doubts over their authenticity have been raised. Meanwhile, asking ridiculous prices for Elvis items continues unabated - several prominent Elvis dealers put price tags of double or more on the 'list' value of records, CDs, books and memorabilia. In January 2003, The Kodak Rock Photography Collection ( http://www.rockx-posed.com) has been promoted widely via the Internet. It includes a large number of photos of Elvis, including many from the famous Albert Wertheimer Archives. The asking prices however are ridiculous - a 11"x14" photo will set you back US$300.00 while a 16"x20" size photo is a whopping US$500.00! How companies can justify incredible prices like this is beyond belief. The problem is some fans are probably paying the asking price! Smart fans could use scans of the pictures to have quality photos made at a fraction of the price being asked in the promotion. As Fair Trading authorities say.....Buyer Beware (and shop around)!! Grissom said he got the idea while reading a biography of Elvis. Among the mostly fictional characters are a blues musician, a Vietnam veteran, a college professor and members of Elvis' entourage, known as the Memphis Mafia. "It's almost a collection of short scenes and monologues," explained Grissom, who teaches drama at the University of Virginia. "It was fun to research and fun to write."
