Tupelo Hit by Storms: Elvis’ hometown of Tupelo was hit by a tornado on April 28th with a small northern portion of the town receiving significant storm damage. The American Red Cross has set up a command post and shelter at the downtown Bancorp South Arena as they assist those impacted by the tornado.
The series of deadly tornadoes that tore through the USA's midsection has so far claimed 31 lives.
At least one of the nine Mississippi victims was reported in Tupelo, where hundreds of homes were flattened, trees were shredded and a quarter of the city was left in the dark after power lines were downed, officials said. The Elvis Presley Birthplace & Museum was not damaged in the storm, neither were any of the other Elvis-related landmarks that include Tupelo Hardware and Lyric Theater. Downtown Tupelo is fully functioning and
welcoming visitors as they continue the clean-up efforts.
In Tennessee, officials said two more people were killed and tornadoes were reported some 80 miles east of Nashville. (News, Source;SM/ElvisInfoNet)

'ELVIS' FTD Classic Album Review: Elvis' fabulous second album, his first genuine album recorded for RCA. This is not a Greatest-Hits kind of collection, instead it contained twelve tracks of extraordinary variety - it is one of my favourite early Elvis albums.
There is no doubt that FTD had to produce this ‘ELVIS’ Classic Album version at some point - but it has to be a very different offering to the classic first LP as unfortunately the session tapes for nearly every song is missing. Another difference is that nearly all these tracks have already been remastered by Vic Anesini and have previously been released elsewhere.
Two New FTD Releases for May: FTD have announced two new products hopefully for mid MAY release. 1. 'Love Me Tender' Classic Album:
A double-CD set. Elvis first performed ‘Love Me Tender’ on the Ed Sullivan Show (Sept 9) and pre-sales reached over 1 million before its release on Sept 28. It features a 16-page booklet with great photos, movie trivia, memorabilia and full recording data.
The extra tracks are, 'We’re Gonna Move' Take 4 & 9. 'Poor Boy' Take 3 original 3 verse master. 'Poor Boy' remake, 'Poor Boy' extended verse, 'Let Me' vocal overdub take 3, 'Let Me' vocal overdub take 4. Plus STEREO MASTERS of all four tracks and The Truth About Me Interview recorded on the set of Love Me Tender.
Disc 2 features the legendary live show from the Mississippi Alabama State Fair and Dairy Show held in Tupelo on September 26. Go here to Elvis FTD/SONY News 2014 for full tracklist and details

Marty Lacker on Paul Anka: Is the recent Paul Anka story (see below)
just another example of an old star trying to get publicity by using Elvis' stunning legacy.. (Photo right, Elvis with Sergio Mendez and Paul Anka)
Marty Lacker wrote to EIN... ... I read that pathetic piece from Paul Anka's book and here's another artist using Elvis to get publicity by making himself out to be more than he was as far as any relationship with Elvis, ala Tom Jones, Wayne Newton and a few others.
Talking and drinking? The only time Elvis had ONE drink was if we went to see a show in Vegas, he didn't like to be around anyone who drank because he saw too much of that from some members of his family in his life. Now Anka passes judgement on Elvis' condition, maybe her should stick to his sorry ass troubles in his life.
Here's a story he won't tell from the 60's. I forget whether it was at MGM or Paramount Studios and what movie we were doing but I came out of Elvis' trailer dressing room during a lunch break as he was taking a nap, the set was quiet because everyone had gone to lunch but when I came out of the door I noticed somebody slinking behind some equipment boxes so being cautious to be sure it was not an intruder I stood quietly still and waited a few minutes when here comes a young Paul Anka trying to sneak away without being seen. Evidently he wanted to possibly catch a glimpse of Elvis or even meet
him. I just laughed to myself how pitiful he looked slinking out the stage door.
Years later I met him backstage at Caesars Palace after his show, he was a bit taken aback. Then in the 70's I was in Scepter Records NY office taking care of some business with the owner Florence Greenburg when in walks Anka, he sees me and immediately turns around and walks away. Hooray for Hollywood. - Marty (News, Source;ML/ElvisInfoNet)
Whether you are an avid Elvis reader or casual fan there is 'something for everybody' jam packed into what is a cleverly written, multi-level release - a compendium of trivia and facts which also act as an Elvis biography.
Paul Anka dishes on Elvis: In his 2013 autobiography, My Way, singer-songwriter Paul Anka had a lot to say about Elvis.
The following extract was recently published by a number of online media sites:
“‘My Way’ meant so much to him as a song, he was going to do it. And I’d say, ‘Elvis, it’s not really your kind of song.’ And he’d say, ‘Nooo, Paulie, but those words, they mean so much to me. Boy, I want to do that song one day.’
It was one of the last songs he recorded. In the end, that song and those words had resonance for him but not in the way I intended. Basically, given Elvis’s pathetic state at the end, it was in the opposite sense that the words had had for Sinatra. There was nothing defiant or heroic about Elvis at that point.”
Opposite: Paul Anka, his wife Anne and Elvis
In fairness to Paul Anka, his autobiography also includes a number of very positive and perceptive statements about Elvis, including the following:
“In Vegas, we’d meet and we’d talk about everything: music and girls and movies. You’d sit there with him drinking and there’d be all these guys around him, so it was mainly small talk … Slowly he started coming over to see my show; he’d sit up there and I’d come back after the show and we’d talk music … He would show up, this incredible God-like figure. He had everything. And the voice—what a great voice he had!”
When Paul woke up in Las Vegas on August 16, 1977, he turned on the news and learned of Elvis Presley’s death. “I cried that day,” Paul admitted. “He was a cool guy, a nice man, but was too young to go … he destroyed himself. Just went too far. He became another statistic. Life is about construction and destruction. It’s all in that balance, everything we see when we can look far enough. When you lose track of that, you self-destruct. And that’s what happened to my talented friend.”
“Elvis imprisoned himself, and lived in a perpetual night. And then there were the guns … There were bullet holes all over the room. He was shooting at ghosts and in the end became one himself.”

Las Vegas Hilton maitre d' dies: Las Vegas maitre d' Emilio Muscelli passed away Tuesday, April 15th, 2014 of pneumonia at a Las Vegas hospital. He was 91 years old. Born in 1922 in the small East Central Italian town of Ascoli Piceno, Muscelli served in the Italian Army during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Rome, where he studied economics and commerce.
As a revered Las Vegas maitre d', Emilio Muscelli seated thousands of locals and visitors at the Rat Pack's performances at the Sands in the early 1960s and to Elvis Presley's attendance-record-setting shows at the Las Vegas Hilton in the 1970s. But Muscelli saved the best table for himself - a front-row seat to some of the most enduring moments and colorful people in Las Vegas history.
In addition to getting to know Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, Muscelli partied with billionaire Howard Hughes in the 1950s, long before Hughes became a recluse, and chauffeured Meyer Lansky when the mob boss came to town in the '60s to keep tabs on the mob's casino operations. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. May 3 at Palm Mortuary-Eastern. (News, Source: http://www.lasvegassun.com)

Interview with Dick Grob, Elvis' Head Of Security: Some fans have very strong opinions about some Elvis associates such as Priscilla, Charlie Hodge and indeed Dick Grob. One can ask the question whether it is fair to judge these people like we sometimes do, since in reality we were not there – and yet they were. Elvis’ life was pretty extraordinary, with many highs and lows, and one wonders how any of us would have coped with the stress, especially if you were responsible for the man’s safety.
In our special interview Dick Grob talks about Elvis as a friend and as a human being, life on the road, Aloha, Elvis’ fondness for the police, Ginger Alden, Elvis’ plans in ’77 for shows in Europe, Elvis’ decline and his death. Grob also discusses, Elvis’ reaction to a fan who said he should smoke marijuana
to improve his music and his final
conversation with Elvis in the very early morning of August 16, 1977.
The ELVIS Concert 2014 - An Evening With Elvis’ Original Musicians: Next month one of the best concerts in Europe, the Special anniversary show featuring the people who knew and worked with The King.
This year it’s 60 years ago that Elvis’ rise to fame began with his first single “That’s All Right”, which was released on SUN Records in the summer of 1954. To celebrate this fact, we are presenting this very special Elvis show, which is widely viewed as one of the best Elvis shows worldwide. This show is unique because it features Elvis’ friends and original musicians.
If you want to meet DICK GROB (see interview above) and hear a great band featuring former Elvis band members – bassplayer Duke Bardwell, drummer Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe, this is THE CONCERT FOR YOU. The MC for the proceedings is Elvis’ former head of security, Dick Grob. Grob will be telling stories from his years with the King, and there will also be plenty of opportunity to talk to him and ask him questions.
The musical part of the show will include Elvis' bandmates plus the leadsinger, the phenomenal Dwight Icenhower, who is regarded by many as one of the best Elvis tribute artists worldwide. Icenhower has won many awards, including “The World’s Best Elvis” in Memphis. They will be backed by a full band. These are the people that stood next to The King when he rocked the world, and this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get upclose to an important part of music history. 'Elvis - Look Out Jackson Town' New Import CD: Welcome to the third CD release by TNT Records. Again with a little help from our friends at “Audionics” - probably THE premium and still active label when it comes to rare recordings in best possible sound - we decided once more to pick this time three shows from “Tour Number 14” (May 30 – June 10, 1975). On this brandnew 3 CD set you are going to hear the three 1975 concerts Elvis did in Jackson, Mississippi. CD1 State Fair Coliseum, Jackson, 08-06-1975 Afternoon Show
CD2 State Fair Coliseum, Jackson, 08-06-1975 Evening Show
CD3 State Fair Coliseum, Jackson, 09-06-1975 Evening Show
Barely over 200 miles or a 3-hour drive from home - on June 8 and 9, 1975 Elvis had Jackson, Mississippi on his tour schedule to play three concerts in two days at the State Fair Coliseum. Tour Number 14 saw its end coming with just another 4 shows in total to do. From all audible and visual experiences listeners of the Jackson-Shows can have it might only be fair to say that Elvis had quite a lot of fun doing what he loved to do: Just being Elvis Presley, singing “his” songs and entertaining the
thousands of people who came to see him live in Concert, paying either the regular ticket price or whatever the many ticket scalpers asked for.
If you have missed the shows' first bootleg releases from approximately 10 years ago or if you want to own them in even better sound than before plus exactly the way they were recorded, you should not miss this great new 3 CD set! You can also expect a great 24-pages booklet full of photos and information including newspaper articles and original paperwork. Ask your local dealer - not EIN - for it! Go here to EIN's 2014 All CD Release News for full tracklist of all three CDs - plus details (News, Source;TNT/ElvisInfoNet)

Mick Hatten column - I can't stop loving Elvis.....and wouldn't want to try: The casual fan line seems to get a bit further from view each month, and I'm not sure exactly how I got here.
I know where it started. "The King of Rock 'N' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters" five-disc box set by Elvis Presley was released in 1992.
I have been a big fan of the Beatles since about 1985, and, after I tracked down about every release by them, I moved on to finding artists whom the Beatles liked.
RCA, the label that Elvis was on, had been all over the map with his catalog over the years. I read a few reviews of "The Complete 50's Masters," though, and I had to have it. It's a fantastic box set and includes all of the Sun Records recordings that so many rock stars have pointed to as having a huge influence on them.
RCA released "From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 60's Masters" in 1993, and I was more cautious about purchasing it. Elvis made the majority of his movies in the 1960s, most of which included some pretty awful soundtracks.
What pulled me in was that the set did not include tracks for movie soundtracks or TV broadcasts. I got it for a decent price and discovered, in pretty short order, that I enjoyed most of it.
"Walk a Mile in My Shoes: The Essential 70's Masters" box set came out in 1995, and the completist in me needed to own it. I would have all the Elvis I would ever need in those 15 discs. Well, then I wanted to see some of his early films and ended up buying a few on VHS tapes. Then I wanted to read a really good biography on Elvis, something that appreciated him but didn't deify the man or focus on his faults. I bought the two-volume biography by Peter Guralnick ("Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley" and "Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley"), which is well written, well researched and, to put it simply, definitive.
I went to Las Vegas with some friends about 10 years ago. I had to track down a statue of Elvis, then I needed to go to the Elvis-A-Rama Museum. Yes, I bought a pair of his replica 1970s sunglasses. I also found a cool T-shirt that has Elvis with the Las Vegas strip behind him. You can see where all of this is going. I have 36 Elvis CD titles, which include (good heavens) nine box sets. RCA also has done an amazing job in recent years with deluxe editions (remastered editions and more chronologically based versions of out-of-print albums) of his music catalog. Yeah, I own five of those. If you were to ask me my dream vacation, I'd have to say going to Memphis, Tenn., to tour the Sun Records Studio then to Graceland, neither of which I have done.
My wife asked me the other day what it is about Elvis that I like so much.
Well, it starts with those early Sun recordings. They were revolutionary. Younger people may scoff at that, but consider being in the South in the early- to mid-1950s and singing music by black artists, mixing it with gospel and country-western. In the racially divided South, the music was considered dangerous on many levels. Elvis developed his own style that, literally, changed music forever. His rise to stardom is such an American dream kind of story. He grew up poor, was seen as a bit of an outcast and shy in high school and became one of the richest and most recognizable artists of all time. Stories like that provide people with a sense of hope.
He also got to places even he could not imagine, which helped provide some of the fuel for his downfall. He experienced fame that few people reach, which helped isolate him. His manager worked him relentlessly for most of his career but also largely kept him from exploring himself artistically. Elvis never seemed to find lasting happiness offstage and developed a prescription drug habit that, ultimately, led to his death. So his story is a tragedy and a cautionary tale.
He's a fascinating artist and one of the best vocalists of all time. What is it about him that has made me a fan? All of that. I started out spending some time studying and listening to his music to find out what the big deal was and ended up a fanatic. I won't be the last one.

Preserving Elvis' concerts at the Polk: Aug. 6, 1956 was the day Lakeland got all shook up, if you'll pardon the grammar.
Perhaps the most noteworthy musical event in Polk County history occurred that day when 21-year-old Elvis Presley played three shows at the Polk Theatre. The performances created indelible memories for those who paid the $1.50 ticket cost and stood in line to see Kid Dynamite just seven months after he first topped the charts with his single, "Heartbreak Hotel."
Though nearly 58 years have passed since then, the president of the Polk Theatre and two local filmmakers know that many memories of that day remain vivid. They want to record those memories in a documentary.
The trio is inviting all who have stories to share about Elvis' appearance in Lakeland to attend an open house at the Polk Theatre on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The event is a preliminary meeting to find interview subjects for the planned documentary.
The documentary is the brainchild of Leslie Sikora, president and CEO of the Polk Theatre, and the film-production team of Shane Lawlor and Spencer Rubel. Lawlor and Rubel produced a musical gathering, the British Invasion, last summer at the theater, an 86-year-old structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
After that event, Sikora said the three talked about what their next project might be, and the discussion turned to Elvis Presley. At first they talked of staging a cabaret show similar to the British Invasion tribute, but Sikora said she would prefer to create something more lasting.
"So Shane came up with the brilliant idea of interviewing these people and putting them on film to last forever before we don't have the luxury of interviewing these people," Sikora said.
Lawlor toured as a professional musician for years, leading such bands as Electric Touch and sharing stages with the likes of Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters. Two years ago, the native of England moved to Lakeland, where his wife, Laura Manning-Lawlor, had grown up. The couple has a young son. Lawlor, 36, said his wife told him about Presley's celebrated appearance in Lakeland before the couple had even settled here. He said he was skeptical until Laura took him to the Polk Theatre, an opulent movie palace restored in the late 1990s after falling into disrepair. As he talked to Lakeland residents, Lawlor came to appreciate the exalted status Presley's performances at the Polk Theatre holds in the local consciousness. Rubel, 26, is a graduate of Full Sail University, an entertainment arts institution in suburban Orlando. He worked as a production assistant on "Sunlight Jr.," a movie starring Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon that was shot in Clearwater.
Sikora said she has been meeting weekly with Lawlor and Rubel to refine the scope of the documentary. Sikora said they have already made contacts with many people who either attended one of Elvis' concerts at the theater or have relatives or friends who did. She said former Lakeland residents living out of the area are invited to share their memories by email (corinnemast@polktheatre.org). Tuesday's gathering is intended only for people with direct or indirect memories of Presley's time in Lakeland, Sikora said, and not for those merely curious about the project.
Album: Elvis Lakeland Florida Show (Sep 4, 1976)
"We're trying to find some stories that maybe have never been shared before," Lawlor said. "We want to put them on the big screen so they won't be secret any more."
Lawlor said he expects the film to be 60 to 80 minutes long. He said the filmmakers tentatively plan to finish the documentary by the end of this summer. Of course, a screening will be held at the Polk Theatre.
"All three of us are so passionate about making this happen that it's a real deal," Lawlor said.
Lawlor said he and Rubel have no intention of making a general documentary about Presley, whose story has been told many times in various media. Instead, they plan a film tightly focused on the intersection of Elvis and Lakeland. Lawlor said the Polk Theatre itself will be "a protagonist" in the documentary.
Sikora said two sponsors whom she declined to name will cover the film's production costs. The filmmakers expectinterview subjects to share their memories without being compensated.
Among the enduring artifacts from Presley's performances in Lakeland is his signature on the wall of a third-floor dressing room. That wall sustained water damage following a roof leak in 2008, and Sikora said she hopes proceeds from the film can be used to have Presley's signature treated by a professional art conservator. Bruno Mars' dad on his superstar son, the erstwhile “Little Elvis”: It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when Bruno Mars worried the Blaisdell Arena was too big for him. Peter Gene Hernandez known by his stage name Bruno Mars was born October 8, 1985 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
More than two decades after turning heads as "Little Elvis," the Roosevelt graduate returns home an international superstar. Bruno Mars' road to the Super Bowl and super stardom started in Waikiki showrooms as a talented toddler. His dad Peter Hernandez told us, "He was the star of the show and I had him on a platform because you could barely see him on the stage he was so tiny."
The world's youngest Elvis impersonator stole the show from his father's 18-piece Doowop group the Love Notes by mastering the King of Rock's moves. He started studying his Dad's tapes when he was 3. Peter says, "He would take that tape. Sometimes I'd get up to use the restroom at 3 a.m. There he was standing there, moving his hips and I would say son, you've got to go to sleep and he'd say wait, just one more minute. I've almost got it and he did the same with Michael Jackson."
His dad thought hitting the jackpot would be to headline in Las Vegas. Bruno had bigger plans. In a Hawaii Moving Company interview, a 13-year-old Bruno told interviewers his goal, as he said, "Hopefully be a famous entertainer."
His proud pop said, "Bruno somehow deep in his soul, feels like he knew from a very young age that he was going to conquer the world with his music. Man, it was like a meteor jumping from level to level and I watched him play rooms this size." The room Hernandez was referring to could only fit 10 people comfortably. That's sure changed.
At 17, Bruno left a successful showbiz career in Hawaii for Hollywood, and a long climb to the top of the charts."It wasn't on my time" he told former Hawaii News Now reporter Teri Okita before winning his first Grammy in 2011. Bruno didn't want to come home to Hawaii a failure. His determination to "make it' on his terms paid off with back to back hits "Nothing on You" and "billionaire" and homecoming concert in 2010.
In a WMG Documentary called "Coming Home" in 2010, Bruno describes his big moment, saying "They called and asked if I would do a Hawaii concert. I thought sure. I can see family. They said the Blaisdell Arena. I said, oh that's big. I don't know if I can handle all that. But it sold out."
Now 28, Bruno returns home again for three sold out shows, boosted by his record setting Super Bowl halftime show. His proud pop explains the significance of that show, saying, "I knew if you didn't know the name Bruno Mars and you hadn't seen a concert, you got a taste of what this young man was all about and I knew this was going to be another pinnacle point that will take him from here to here."

Elvis: Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis (Album Review): This Legacy Edition marks the 40th anniversary of the original release of Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis. It features the completely remastered original recording. There are also extra tracks that were left off the original because of the space limitations of vinyl records, so you get the complete concert. It also includes a second disc which captures a different concert with a slightly different set list which took place at the Richmond Coliseum in Virginia on March 18, 1974, two days before the March 20 Memphis concert. The second disc also includes five songs from a rehearsal at RCA Studios on August 16,1974.
Elvis Presley is obviously having a lot of fun onstage in his hometown. He jokes with his large group of musicians and backup singers and makes fun of himself and his audience (in a loving way). He sounds absolutely wonderful, demonstrating his versatility and the showmanship which has led many people to still consider him the King among entertainers. This was before he sank into the maudlin, melodramatic material that often plagued his later career and before his spiral into ill health and poor physical condition. Listeners get to hear him at his best with this album.
Legacy has done a fine job on the remastering, although it is still difficult to hear J.D. Sumner’s very low bass notes on the beginning of “Why Me Lord” on my car stereo. The addition of the songs cut from the original allows us to hear Presley sing “Steamroller Blues,””Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Polk Salad Annie,” and a thrilling version of “Fever,” all songs that many fans have not heard him perform too often. Then there are numerous old favorites here that were also not included on the original: a medley of “Teddy Bear” and “Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Suspicious Minds.” A version of Lloyd Price’s “Lawdy, Miss Clawdy” and the medley of “Long Tall Sally,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Flip, Flop and Fly,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Hound Dog” are the most exciting things on the album for those who, like me, prefer rockabilly Elvis.
The second disc is most notable for the five rehearsal songs: “Softly As I Leave You,” “Down in the Alley,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “The Twelfth of Never” and an excellent version of “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues.” This is a chance to hear Presley as close to his natural, unmixed sound as a fan can get and he sounds great. It proves what an extraordinary voice the man really did have.
Altogether there are 52 tracks on this two-CD set and while they include many numbers duplicated between the two concerts, even those hold interest for the listener as you get to hear the different stage banter.
Legacy has done a great job of bringing us a classic Elvis Presley album with a lot of bonus material, making this a bargain and a new experience even for those who have the original 1974 recording. It should be mentioned that the expanded Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis was originally released by Follow That Dream. The Richmond concert was previously released separately as Forty-Eight Hours to Memphis by the same collectors label. The Legacy Edition is the first time they have been available together. What Every Child Needs To Know About Elvis Presley (Board Book)
Now Out - "The Elvis Movies" - new book garnering rave reviews!:In The Elvis Movies, James L. Neibaur looks at the 31 features that Presley made, from Love Me Tender in 1956 to Change of Habit in 1969.
Most of these were star vehicles tailor-made for his image. As Neibaur points out, Elvis had a real interest in being a good actor, but his initial promise was soon thwarted by anti-creative decisions that sold a packaged version of the singer.
Despite lapsing into a predictable formula of lightweight musicals, Elvis Presley’s star power ensured that the films became box office successes. Neibaur examines each film, providing information about their production and offering assessments about their value in general, as well as their place in the Presley canon. Additional details include behind-the-scenes personnel, costars, DVD availability, and featured hit songs.
About the author: James L. Neibaur is a highly regarded film historian, reviewer and author whose critically acclaimed books include volumes on Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis and the RKO Features.
(Album Review) - “Elvis: Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis” [RCA Victor/Legacy two discs]: The disc doesn’t say “Elvis Presley” on it, merely “Elvis.” Who else would it be recording on stage in Memphis in 1974 with a picture of Elvis’ manse Graceland?
Added to the original vinyl version on this deluxe two-disc package are all kinds of prime-time rarities from 1974, including all the tracks not originally included in concert at the Richmond Coliseum on March 18, 1974, and five tracks recorded in Hollywood in August that were meant as “reference tracks” for a Memphis gig.
How can you resist Elvis in rehearsal asking his musicians “Well, what can we screw up next?” and playing with lyrics? The Elvis in Memphis concert rocks and rocks hard on home turf. You’re listening to a reasonably happy man with a bloodstream that’s letting him do his work and do it well. J.S. Rating: 3½ stars(Review, Source: Gusto, BuffaloNews.com)
Power of Elvis a force for peace in Northern Ireland: CATHOLICS and Protestants were united in their love of Elvis for the evening when a Vale vicar performed on a so-called peace line in Belfast.
More than 250 people turned out for the concert on April 5 to see Reverend Andy Kelso perform his Elvis Presley gospel tribute act.
Held in the Townsend Street Presbyterian Church, the show saw people come from both sides of the peace line, tall barriers separating Irish nationalist and unionist neighbourhoods. And the concert even raised £4,000 for the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice.
Rev Kelso, aged 66, of Throckmorton, spent two days in the city in February to promote the concert and unite Catholics and Protestants who share a common link - their love of 'The King'.
"The whole point of my going over in February to walk the Peaceline and to visit shops and businesses and doing 10 media interviews was to promote this concert with a view to getting both Catholics and Protestants together because of their joint love of Elvis," he said.
"But getting them together was going to be tough. Where I did the concert was right on the Peaceline and the police opened the gate between the two communities which is normally closed at weekends.
"It was amazing, the police were there but there wasn't any problems. It was a real privilege to see people from both communities come together and who knows how this can develop."
Following the concert, Rev Kelso was taken on a six-hour walk around Belfast with Frank Higgins, who was just 11 when the troubles started. Their tour started off at the docks, where the Titanic was built, before going into the city centre and stopping off at Belfast's oldest pub then on to the top of Shankhill Road.
"Frank was typical of so many people there," said Rev Kelso. "He said he just done his 11 plus and he suddenly heard these shots and these two kids were shot dead behind him. He flattened himself by a shop door and felt these bullets whizz past. He saw so much carnage and it made him so angry, he joined the British army. He was great, he did so much to get this concert off the ground."
Rev Kelso said his act went down so well he is returning to perform again on the peace line.
"We would expect to get more people next time, it would be really nice to be part of a deeper peace process," he added. (News, Source: Tewkesbury Admag.co.uk)
'Scotty & Elvis: Aboard The Mystery Train,' Scotty Moore with James L. Dickerson (University Of Mississippi Press): This book, written by Elvis' original guitarist, Scotty Moore, a few years ago, reveals a lot of fascinating information about how the original Sun Records' rockabilly sound was created by Scotty, doghouse bassist Bill Black and young Elvis.
It also reveals how Scotty and Bill were paid as sidemen once the ball starting rolling and shafted once Elvis' management was taken over by Colonel Parker. Fame and Parker's hucksterism led Elvis into endless movies, no performances abroad and little performance satisfaction. Scotty no longer played with Elvis after the 1968 "Comeback Special."
This book reveals all that and more, and is a breezy read that guitar and rockabilly fans will dig. (Review, Source: Ricky Flake, SunHerald.com)
Unmasked....the singing hoaxer who brought Elvis back from the grave and helped fool legions of Presley fans into thinking the King was still alive: Orion aka Jimmy Ellis, was the ultimate pretender to the King’s throne, a masked Elvis sound-a-like drafted in after Presley’s death in order to keep his fans hoping their idol might be still alive.
And now the story of that rock and roll hoax is being made into a film with the backing of The Film Agency for Wales.
Orion: The Man Who Would Be King goes behind the diamante-studded disguise of Jimmy Ellis, the Mississippi-born crooner whose uncanny vocal similarity to Nashville’s biggest singing star would prove both a blessing and a curse, right up until his tragic and violent death in 1998.
“I’ve always been fascinated by stories about people who aren’t what they seem or hide behind some of sort of mask,” said Dewi Gregory, the Caerphilly producer involved in the project. “And here you had a guy who, through no fault of his own, naturally sounded like Elvis - right down to the way he spoke. Even his mum’s name was the same as Presley’s – Gladys – although I’m not sure if she had any Welsh connections. As a result though, the guys at Sun Records ended up exploiting his talent when the King died and it’s that which spawned the whole ‘Elvis is alive’ myth.”
Indeed, such was the mass outpouring of public grief with which greeted news of Presley’s infamous passing on the floor of a Memphis bathroom in 1977 that Ellis found himself thrust into spotlight and performing to packed audiences through the States.
“Sun Records took the decision to release Ellis’ cover of Elvis’ That’s Alright Mama as his first single, but instead of attributing it to his stage name Orion, they put a question mark on the cover,” added Gregory. “A huge amount of Elvis fans back then simply didn’t want to believe he was gone – still don’t, many of them – and Orion became a way of keeping that dream going.
“The only problem was that he could never shake free of that conceit, so when he took off the mask a few years later and tried to be his own man it didn’t work out. He knew it too and once remarked, ‘I know they’re not clapping for me, they’re applauding a ghost’ – it was all a bit sad really."
But nowhere near as tragic as the fate which awaited him off stage, Ellis being gunned down in a botched robbery at the pawn shop he owned in Alabama. And Gregory hopes the project, which is being directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, would lead to a revaluation of Ellis career.
“He was way more than a simple Elvis impersonator and worked with many of the same people the King had,” he said. “I think he genuinely wanted to pay tribute to Presley and just got caught up in this elaborate marketing gimmick.” He added that he was looking for donations from the public to help get the film finished.
“In exchange for a small donation to out online crowdfunding campaign they could receive original Orion LPs, a DVD of the completed documentary, a replica Orion mask or – my personal favourite – the chance to name a star in the Orion Nebula. Ellis is rock’s forgotten man - we want to do what we can to change that,” said Gregory.
The deadline for the crowdfunding campaign runs until April 27, find it at www.orionthemovie.com(News, Source: WalesOnline)
What would Elvis drink? - A cocktail fit for The King, best served all shook up, on the jailhouse rocks! It would seem the vodka makers of the world have covered the full spectrum of flavors by now. A sriracha-flavored vodka ? Check. A bacon-flavored vodka ? Check as well.
But an Elvis-flavored vodka? The folks at Three Olives, a popular vodka brand with 20-plus flavors in its lineup, have indeed come up with such a spirit. But what exactly does Elvis taste like? Apparently, coconut water. Three Olives admits it was already looking to cash in on the coconut water craze. (Sales of coconut water have nearly doubled every year since 2004, reaching $153 million in 2013 . The brand was also looking to launch another celebrity-branded vodka following the successful release of its Marilyn Monroe strawberry vodka last year . “Elvis was a logical choice,” says a Three Olives spokesperson. And he fit the coconut water concept by virtue of his Hawaii connections . Of course, some have suggested a true Elvis vodka would be flavored with peanut butter and bananas — that’s the King’s signature sandwich, after all.
What we think about it: We confess: We were prepared to write off this vodka as little more than a marketing gimmick and another way for a brand to cash in on a dead celebrity (and another way for a dead celebrity’s estate to reap the benefits — the vodka was made possible through a licensing agreement with the Presley people). But whaddaya know? The flavor actually works. There’s a genuine coconut water taste to this thing — a flavor that’s lighter and more refreshing than pure coconut, but that still has a hint of the tropics. We’ll definitely be sipping this one through summertime.
How to enjoy it: Three Olives suggests any number of cocktails you can make with the Elvis vodka, including “The Elvis” (with pineapple juice and club soda). But we think the vodka is best enjoyed on the rocks by itself — like Hawaii in a glass. (News, Source: Charles Passy, Weekend Sip/MarketWatch.com)
Tweed Elvis festival struggling: Following our story on 7 April about new arrangements to operate the popular Parkes Elvis Festival in Australia, comes news that another Elvis festival isn’t doing as well.
Organizers of the Tweed Elvis Festival in Ontario, Canada are worried about having enough money to stage the popular festival this year. This week, local MPP Todd Smith stood at Queens Park to ask the government to continue to provide some tourism grant money.
The Tweed Elvis Festival had been receiving a $20,000 grant from the province in past years, but there is been nothing so far this year.
Organizers are hoping they will be approved from another grant program. (News, Source: quintenews.com)
Friday 18 April 2014 -- Happy Easter --
Happy Easter From EIN: While Elvis loved the Christmas festival he also enjoyed the Easter celebrations and particularly after the birth of Lisa Marie and the chance to do Easter-egg hunts.
... The reason Elvis released and recorded Gospel songs like 'We Call On Him' and 'You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was because The Colonel used every Easter to do an "Easter Special" to publicise Elvis' music on the radio. Parker took out adverts on radio & in the music trade & they played Elvis gospel music every Easter in America on syndicated radio shows. Go HERE for Ernst Jorgensen discussing Elvis' Gospel recordings.
And don't forget Elvis' 'Easter Special' the 10th FTD release from back in 2001. "A brilliant compile of twenty (officially) unreleased Gospel songs this CD features some excellent alternate versions of old favourites as well as some fascinating Studio discussions." Angela Lansbury made a Dame : Angela Lansbury has been honoured for her long career on stage and in TV and films in the UK's honours list. The 88-year-old actress is known to millions for her role in Blue Hawaii, as sleuth Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote and her countless film roles.
She has been nominated three times for an Academy Award, including for her debut in the 1944 thriller Gaslight, but failed to win each time and was presented last year with an honorary Oscar.
Dame Angela, who was previously awarded a CBE, was born in Poplar, east London, but moved to the US during the Second World War after the death of her father Edgar, who was a politician.
She returned to her roots last month when she took to the stage at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End for a production of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit.
It is the first time in almost 40 years that she has been on the London stage, reprising the role which won her a Tony award on Broadway.
Her award is for services to drama and to charitable work and philanthropy. Go HERE for EIN's in-depth look at Blue Hawaii (News, Source;ElvisInfoNet)
Whitehorn's attack on Elvis' music embodied the strident, right-wing religious conservatism of the time and subliminal resistance of an adult population rallying against having its music replaced by the 'unruly sounds' of a younger generation. EIN's Nigel Patterson takes a closer look at what was only one of hundreds of articles attacking Elvis and rock 'n' roll music....
............Calls to expunge the devil’s music by burning Elvis’ records, ban his public performances given their lewd nature and for parents to lock up their daughters, were commonplace and it seemed the louder the protest the more successful Elvis, the ‘devil incarnate’, became........
Graceland showcases Elvis Memorabilia for Special Anniversary: The Chicago Tribunal has published a neat promotion for the new Graceland display and the 60th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll celebration. ... They're pretty insignificant looking. If you saw one blow across the sidewalk, you'd hardly take notice.
But the two pieces of brown paper are payroll stubs, and when you realize their history, you can only smile.
They belonged to Elvis Presley when he was making deliveries, at a dollar an hour, around Memphis, Tenn., for the Crown Electric Co. The stubs are dated July 24 and July 30, 1954, around the time Presley reshaped music and American culture.
They are among the items that are part of a new display at Presley's home, Graceland, in Memphis. This year marks the 60th anniversary of his first official recording, "That's All Right," on July 5, 1954, and Graceland and Memphis are using the occasion to celebrate the King, rock 'n' roll and the city itself.
"The stubs show Elvis Presley is like the rest of us," said Kevin Kern, Graceland's director of communications. "He filled out a pay stub and got paid every week."
If you're impressed by the pay stubs, you'll be all shook up by the 45 rpm record, Elvis' personal copy, of "That's All Right," which also is in the show. You could make the argument that this record is the genesis of rock 'n' roll.
"It's a small thing, but it's the center of the exhibit," Kern says of the 45, which sports the iconic yellow Sun Records label.
The exhibit will include 150 to 200 artifacts, with dates ranging from 1954 to today, covering his career and impact. There's also his script from 1957's "Jailhouse Rock," before it had a name. It's referred to as "Untitled Presley Story" on the cover. Another film represented in the exhibit is 1964's "Viva Las Vegas," in which Elvis wore a red shirt.
If you watch the final scene, Elvis comes through this Western-style door, and he's wearing this shirt with a black jacket over it, and he sings the title song.
The exhibit opened Feb. 24 and is part of a series of events in the city for 2014. Go HERE to EIN's"60 Years of Elvis" EIN Exhibition Preview to see more great images: (News, Source;ChicagoTribunal/ElvisInfoNet)
'Walkin' Talkin' Glitz City Blues' New Import CD: Out soon is the new Straight Arrow CD release titled 'Walkin' Talkin' Glitz City Blues', featuring the August 23rd, 1972 Dinner show. It is taken from an original mono audience recording in remarkably good sound. Yes, we used the original actual cassette that was used to record this concert in the first place, and we were able to improve the sound-quality noticeably. Ask your local dealer for samples!
It’s unlikely that anyone who saw Elvis Presley on stage during the Summer ’72 engagement came away disappointed. Presley looked fabulous: he had a nice tan, he was slim, and both the jumpsuit and the jacket / pants combinations that he was experimenting with looked rather good on him. His shows that season were tight and highly professional, and truly offered something for everybody. The setlist was largely based on the MSG one, with new additions like ‘What Now My Love’ and ‘My Way’ adding extra spice to the show. The dinner show from August 23rd, 1972 is a topnotch performance. He’s right in the middle of the engagement, with still about two weeks left, but he
delivers the goods and puts his soul especially into the power ballads. It’s not unlikely that he may have wanted to impress journalist Joe Delaney, a reviewer for the Las Vegas Sun and an old friend of the Colonel’s, who was in the audience that night.
It should be noted that the August 23, 1972 Dinner show is completely new, even for die-hard Elvis fans. This concert has never been in circulation in any form. Unfortunately the tape ran out before the finale of „My Way". The producers decided to use (great sounding) original tapes of the August 22nd, 1972 M/S and the August 23rd, 1972 M/S from their vaults, to fill out the missing part.
This release is presented in Straight Arrow‘s traditional deluxe digipack, designed by one of the best graphic artists in the Elvis world, rare photos from this engagement (he actually wore the blue swirl at this show) as well as intelligent liner-notes that give you the low-down on this show. - Did Elvis want more children.
Elvis and Jacko still 'Working Hard For The Money'; Celebrities have a difficult time resting in peace once rights holders realise that hard-earned goodwill doesn’t necessarily expire when the star does. The minders of the Elvis Presley estate eventually figured out how to monetise memories of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
Elvis made a fine financial UK chart comeback this past year when his compilation 'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' went Number One in the UK Album Charts and is now close to Platinum sales. The new Presley concert event, 'ELVIS: ON STAGE' is also touring Europe to sold-out venues nearly everywhere.
The heirs of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, are also readying a collection of songs to help refresh his legacy. Xscape, out May 13, gathers eight "new" Michael Jackson tunes that have been remixed by producers like Timbaland.
By some yardsticks, there’s never been a better time to get into bed with Jackson.
The business magazine Forbes has an annual list of top-earning dead luminaries. The bottom line for some stars is that it’s become possible for their biggest paydays to come long after they stop performing.
Madonna beat everyone with a pulse in the most recent tally, which covered the period from June 2012 to June 2013, with $125 million in total earnings. But her one-time Oscar date pulled in an estimated $160 million in the same amount of time, and Jackson did not have to work nearly as hard.
"It’s the third time in the past five years that the top-earning celebrity in the world has come from the graveyard," Forbes noted.
The bulk of Jackson’s afterlife earnings were attributed to a couple of Cirque du Soleil shows and ownership stakes in music publishing catalogues. Jackson's 50% ownership of Sony/ATV Music Publishing means that he makes money by owning The Beatles' song catalogue but also owns the Leiber/Stoller catalogue so also makes money from Elvis sales. In the Forbes listings last year Elvis Presley was second earning a fine $55 million.
Even Frank Sinatra is poised for another earnings comeback due to the recent release of "Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select, an expensive whiskey.
Sinatra, according to legend, was buried with a bottle of the brand’s more mundane offering, amounting to perhaps the first example of posthumous product placement.
India votes Elvis Top Solo Act: India.com one of the biggest news companies in India, with around 28 million readers, has voted ELVIS as the 'Best Solo Music Artist'. They commented... You don’t need to be in a band to make it big in the music industry, all you need is talent, good looks and a little bit of luck..
The Top Five selected were 1) Elvis Presley: Elvis Presley sold more albums than any other individual music artist in history. As well as being a musician, Elvis was also an actor appearing in movies like Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii and Love Me Tender. Some of Elvis’s most popular songs are Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, A Little Less Conversation, Blue Suede Shoes and Viva Las Vegas. Elvis remains one of the most recognizable singers to this day and his voice uniquely unmistakable.

Elvis Beretta Guns Ad Campaign Lawsuit: The Elvis Presley estate is suing the maker of Beretta firearms for falsely suggesting that the King has endorsed its latest model. It is true that Elvis was an avid gun aficionado and once owned a Beretta firearm, but according to the Presley estate, that still doesn't give the Italian company that manufactures Beretta guns the right to use Presley's image in an advertising campaign.
Last week a false advertising and publicity rights lawsuit was filed in Tennessee federal court against Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta SpA.
The complaint says that Beretta introduced a shotgun for sporting clays shooting and used advertising "intended to suggest that the gun's status ultimately would be equivalent to Elvis' legendary status as an entertainer." The model 692 was introduced at popular gun trade shows including the 2014 SHOT in Las Vegas.
"As part of the Elvis Themed Advertising Campaign, Beretta advertised that Elvis was coming to these events," says the lawsuit. "At every venue, Beretta had Elvis impersonators pose with the weapons."
Then, there were posters. According to the lawsuit, "As part of the Elvis Themed Advertising Campaign, Beretta created or had created advertising posters that feature an image of a performer appearing to be Elvis facing an audience wearing a jumpsuit in the style typically associated with Elvis with a shooting vest and ear protectors on so as to associate Beretta's products with Elvis." The Elvis estate demands an injunction and further monetary damages.
The complaint includes "Beretta’s unauthorized use of the Elvis Intellectual Property" and basically "As a result of Beretta’s unauthorized advertising Campaign, Beretta was unjustly enriched at the expense of the plaintiff." I.E. EPE wants their cut of the profits! EPE also demand the cost of the lawsuit. (News, Source;ElvisInfoNet)
Elvis dental crown to tour UK!: In another ridiculous story that only goes to show the amazing legacy of Elvis, a dozen dentists across the UK will be hosting an 'Elvis Day' in May to promote awareness of mouth cancer.
Each practice will host a model of Presley's teeth plus a genuine dental crown made for the rock 'n' roller by former Memphis dentist Henry J Weiss. Each ‘Elvis Day’ will involve costumes, music and free mouth cancer screenings, according to the organisers.
In 2010 6,539 people in the UK were diagnosed with oral cancer and there were 1,985 deaths from oral cancer in the UK.
Presley visited the dentist at 10.30pm on August 15, 1977, the day before he died. Elvis’s Crown was bought in auction in February 2012 for $11,000 by Michael Zuk, Canadian author and dentist and obsessive collector of celebrity teeth.
Zuk recently outlined his plans to clone Beatles musician John Lennon using DNA from the singer’s tooth, another item in his collection. Wherever he is, Elvis must be laughing now!

... Following the artistic success of his 1973 'Stax Sessions' and the global phenomenon of the 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' album and broadcast the same year, Elvis opened 1974 with a 15 city tour routed to end in Memphis and a state-of-the-art concert recording. When originally released as a single LP, 'Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis' reached #1 on the Country charts and featured 'How Great Thou Art', the track that would bring Elvis his third Grammy win. 'Memphis Mafia Princess' Shirley Dieu book: Shirley Dieu lived with Joe Esposito for five years and travelled with him on all of Elvis' tours and vacations as well as Graceland. She was also a good friend to Elvis and remains close to this day to Joe, Priscilla, Jerry, and David Stanley and others as well.
Shirley notes.... My book 'Memphis Mafia Princess: Living In 'The Elvis World'' will be not like any other Elvis book out there. The thing that makes it so different, is that it is all about the "good times" and all of the wonderful things that all of us did together with Elvis. The funny little things that he did. Things that he laughed at and the things that we laughed at with him. The vacations, the crack-ups and the truth about a lot of things that so many others have never told. (Or that they have told completely opposite of what really was) Especially in the final years. There were some great times in the final years, unfortunately no one ever talks about those times. But I do in 'Memphis Mafia Princess'.
Shirley Dieu has been working on her book since 2012 but it will hopefully be ready later this year. (News, Source;SM/ElvisInfoNet)

Portland Sisters Recall Meeting Elvis: A cute response to the Portland story when the children in the photo (see news story below) contacted The Oregonian, told their story and supplied more photos. The four sisters still vividly remember details of Presley's 1957 visit to the city.
When they found out where Elvis would be arriving 17-year old Marcella Marx brought her sisters Donna 14, Patty 12 and Dorothy 3, to Union Station with an autograph book and Mickey Mouse Club guitar.
After Presley got off the train, he spotted and spent a few minutes with the siblings. It took only two words -- 'Hiya babe' -- and Elvis' big blue eyes to put Donna in "seventh heaven." Patty remembers him being so kind to take the time and visit. Dorothy was a bit too young to remember details, but Elvis paid special attention to her and checked out the guitar that she still has today.
Years later, they're all still Elvis fans. Marcella, who was the lucky one out of the four to attend the
concert with a friend, says of Presley, "Everybody talks about the Beatles, but it was Elvis who changed the landscape of music from the crooner to rock and roll. He was a breath of fresh air."
For the record, Marcella said the concert was wonderful and she was screaming and yelling as Presley sang his songs and wiggled around on stage.

This one promises in its publicity, "45 minutes of unreleased footage in black and white and color" and features the making of 'It Happened At The World's Fair.
The last DVD in the series, mainly a compilation of audience filmed concert footage plenty of which had been seen before, got some very bad reviews - so let's hope this new 'Hot Shots and Cool Clips' really does contain some quality previously uinseen material.
Elvis 1977 original 8mm Cine reel for Sale: On Ebay as promoted,,, ... An original *UNSEEN* 8mm cine reel containing 40 minutes of great color footage of Elvis' show at the Municipal Auditorium on Austin, Texas on March 28th 1977 (8:30pm showtime). The footage is very impressive and it has original matching sound in good quality. Elvis does a superb show wearing the Arabian / King of Spades jumpsuit. Elvis' Honeymoon Hideaway For Sale at $9 Mill!: Elvis Presley's honeymoon hideaway in Palm Springs, Calif., is about to hit the market for $9 million just in time for the wedding season.
Elvis and Priscilla leased the home for about a year. They signed the lease before their Las Vegas wedding in 1967 and paid $21,000 a month for the suave residence. A copy of the lease hangs on the wall today.
The residence was purchased by Boston-based investor M.L. Lewis through a trust in 1987 for $487,500. An enthusiastic "Elvis junkie," Lewis has owned it ever since, stacking the house up with collectibles, including wedding pictures of the couple.
The house has become a popular place for Elvis fans. Several guided tours of the house are available and a weekend event dedicated to celebrating the couple's anniversary is held every May at the property.
Located in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood in Palm Springs, the house was built in 1960 by Robert Alexander, a prominent developer at the time. Originally called the "House of Tomorrow" due to its modern eccentric design, the residence is a three-story home built in four concentric circles. According to Iconic Palm Springs Vacation Rentals, there is not a single square room in the home.
Listing records at Zillow state that the house has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Spanning an area of 5,500 square feet, the house sits on more than an acre of land and also has a pool and waterfall features at the front.
More recently, Presley's Beverly Hills home sold for $14.5 million. (News, Source;PalmEstate/ElvisInfoNet)
Lisa Marie arrives in Japan after Aussie Tour: It's a long lonely highway from Memphis to Japan - via the small intimate venues in Australia - but Lisa Marie still had a reminder of her family roots thanks to her twin daughters.
Lisa Marie and her two 5-year-olds Harper and Finlay had pretty cowboy boots on their feet when they arrived a Japan's Narita Airport.
Lisa Marie is still currently on tour, having arrived in Japan from Australian after playing a string of dates from Sydney to Melbourne.
Her Australian concerts received some excellent reviews where she showcased songs from her most recent album getting down with some country southern-soul, along with some more rockier rousing anthems.
Lisa Marie has also been raving about her weight loss, which was inspired by the fact that Elvis had weight issues sadly dying at only 42. Lisa Marie admitted her worries about dying young but at 46 she is now in the best shape of her life, weighing the same as she did when she was a teenager.
She told a paper, 'Knowing my family history – my father's side is totally not healthy and they have shorter life spans, while my mom's side is super fit with long life spans – I didn't know where I would land. So I said, "Okay. I'm going to play it safe and try to be as healthy as I can be.
'I'm at the weight I was at when I was a teenager. I love the way clothes fit right now.'

$350,000 needed for Parkes Elvis Festival: In a shock revelation Parkes Shire General Manager, Kent Boyd announced that a sum of $350,000 will be needed to run the 2015 Australian Elvis Festival.
He explained that a new ‘model’ will be used to put on the festival and the newly created 'Parkes Elvis Festival Committee' would replace Parkes Elvis Revival Inc and would be constituted under the Local Government Act.
A Festival Director was employed to run the festival several years ago, but in the past couple of years, the position has not been
required, with the Elvis Revival group running the program. The creation of the new committee has now brought it under the auspices of council.
"A provisional sum of $350,000 will need to be provided to ensure sufficient cash flow is available for the efficient delivery of the 2015 Festival," Mr Boyd said, "Elvis Revival has generously indicated they will provide an initial $250,000 contribution in support of the new committee running the festival.
The committee is looking to run the festival at a profit and some of that would come back to pay off council.
If the festival ran at a loss, council would have to look at it.
"But I should stress this is a not council-run festival, but a community-run festival, and the support of volunteers is crucial. We will be encouraging the community to be a big part of it."
Mr Boyd also pointed out that Elvis Revival had made a profit with the festival, and the new committee would have the ‘value of their expertise."

Elvis 1957 Portland Memories Discovered: As the Oregonian Media Group prepared to move out of their old building they combed through their old photo negatives discovering some beautiful Elvis negatives fro 1957.
It was confirmed that both photos were taken on Sept. 2, 1957 when Presley visited Portland for a concert at Multnomah Stadium, the shot on stage published by The Oregonian and the other was printed by The Oregon Journal.
As Journal staff writer Dorothy Lois Smith penned in her column the day following the concert, there was "definitely the on-stage Elvis and off-stage Elvis." The juxtaposition of a rhinestone studded Presley that can hardly contain himself and the tender loving, mild-mannered Presley in the other photo gives a good representation of just that.
The Oregonian Media Group provide a
slideshow so that fans can check out the photos and negatives found, with the original captions that ran when they were published. Also included are the newspaper pages and photos published the day after the concert. If you happen to recognize anyone in the photos - please contact them and pass on your stories. Elvis At American Studios 1969: Marty Lacker recently commented to us about our previous article on Elvis' 1969 Memphis sessions (see below). Marty said,"Pamela Decker's Spotlight and writings on Elvis' American Studios '69 sessions is one of the most intelligent and well written pieces I have seen about those history making sessions and Elvis' career in general. I commend her for a job well done". - Marty Lacker. In case you missed our spotlight from 2009 here is a chance to revisit it. EIN thanks Marty Lacker for the reminder.
UPDATED - 'American Studios 1969 - A Turning Point In History':Elvis' pivotal recordings at American Studios in January and February 1969 were a key turning point, not just in Elvis' amazing legacy but also in music history. Extraordinarily the 2009, 40th anniversary of Elvis' American Studios sessions was essentially passed without so much as a whimper. There was no sign marking the site where these landmark sessions took place. The media focus on the string of hits generated from Elvis’ all too brief Memphis convergence with legendary producer Lincoln Wayne "Chips" Moman and the talented musicians assembled in his studio was only brief. Back in 2009, EIN rightfully noted the 40th Anniversary of the first chart topping song from these sessions 'In The Ghetto' and EIN contributor Pamela Mays Decker provided a much-needed spotlight onto these unique Memphis sessions. 'Ginger Alden Autobiography' - Delayed: The publication date of Ginger Alden's new book has been delayed - with the release date now being stated as September 2, 2014.
Ginger Alden, Elvis Presley's fiancee at the time of his death in 1977, is publishing her upcoming memoir, 'Elvis & Ginger: Elvis Presley's Fiancee and Last Love Finally Tells Her Story'.
Alden's title not only will narrate her relationship with the King in Graceland -- from when they first met to when he passed away -- but also will "set the record straight" about their bond, and rescue the musician from the rumors and tabloid attention in which she found herself surrounded just before and after his death.
She also will share details about his exploration of Eastern religions, his perception of fame and his intimate moments with loved ones.
To cover the book that aims to humanize the legend and her love for him, the model and actress chose a photo of the couple in a wintry white setting, with Alden wearing a fur coat and Presley wearing a black jacket and purple scarf, holding his signature sunglasses. General Hospital's Jane Elliot on Working With Elvis: Jane Elliot is mainly recognised for her work in TV's 'General Hospital' however she also co-stared with Elvis in 'Change Of habit' when she played the part of Sister Barbara Bennett. TV Guide Magazine recently spoke to the Emmy-winning actress about her legacy. In this part she recalls her time with Elvis. Jane Elliot: Do you know that I didn't want to do that movie Change of Habit? I actually turned it down because I didn't want to be in a film with Elvis. Who does that?
TV Guide: How could you pass it up? It was his last film, right? Elliot: I thought it was beneath me. Yes, it was the last movie on his contract and he hated making movies and never did another one. He wanted to get back to his music, which he did right after that. But it was
not the kind of work I'd come to Hollywood to do. Laughs- I was a snob raised on the upper east side of Manhattan, who went to private schools and only listened to real music. My favorite aunt started the legal department at the William Morris Agency back in the '50s and she knew Elvis's manager, the Colonel, and he would give her all kinds of great Elvis memorabilia, autographed photos, scripts, movie posters, you name it, and she would give it all to me and I would throw it all in the garbage because Elvis was not my genre.
TVG: That sound you hear is millions of diehard Presley fans collapsing in a dead faint. Elliot: I was an idiot! And I now understand why those millions are still devoted to him, why their hearts broke for him, why they cried for him. It was my stupid blindness! I wound up doing the movie anyway because it came as part of a multi-film deal, which never amounted to anything, but on my first day on the set I did a complete 180. Elvis was a lovely, lovely man, a real gentleman and so sweet and fun and funny. I had the best time working with him and everyone else. Mary Tyler Moore and Barbara McNair were also in the movie, and they were fantastic and the ultimate professionals! I was just 21 at the time and learned so much from that experience. It was a real
privilege, a thrill. I am so glad the universe saw fit to make me get over myself.
TVG: Did Elvis make a pass at you? Elliot: (Laughing)- He made a pass at everybody!

Ginger Alden Video: For fans disappointed that her autobiography has been delayed, why not watch this very interesting video from 1980.

Tim Farrell - NOT Elvis' Son: Marty Lacker could have saved him the agony - but it took a British TV show to confirm to Tim Farrell that he is not the son of Elvis Presley.
His 35 years of wondering ended last week, thanks to a British television show that disproved a decades-old claim by Farrell’s mother that he was sired by Elvis in 1954.
“Dead Famous DNA,” a show broadcast only in the United Kingdom, used genetic testing to determine Farrell is not the son of The King. “I’m glad it’s over,” said Farrell, 58, a truck mechanic in Jackson. “It’s been a long time.” (right; Farrell & Vernon Presley)
Farrell is sometimes subjected to unfair ridicule, so one point should be made plain: He never claimed Elvis Presley was his father.
His mother made that claim, from 1978 until her death in 2002. Her circumstantial evidence was taken seriously enough that the story made the newspapers.
Ten years ago, DNA testing technology advanced enough that Farrell decided to find the truth. Science was ready to provide an answer, but Farrell received a cold shoulder from the Presley estate.
Finally the UK TV show contacted Farrell and offered to dig into his genetic mystery on “Dead Famous DNA.”
Producers reportedly paid $2,000 for samples of Elvis’ hair, which was used for DNA testing.
No one can be 100-percent sure the hair really belonged to Elvis, but the likelihood is strong and that hair showed no genetic link to Farrell.
But you'd be wrong to assume Farrell is disappointed with the results. “I am glad to be done with this. It’s been a question that was always there, and it kind of detracts from the rest of your life.” See EIN's previous conspiracy story on Tim Farrell from 2005. (Conspiracy, Source;ElvisInfoNet)
Tuesday 1 April 2014 -- April Fool's Day --
Breaking News: Graceland mansion slowly sinking into the ground!: News just in from AAAP in Memphis, that geological surveyors have identified a major issue with Graceland. The mansion is slowly sinking into the ground! EPE media spokesman Lyle Zapato said today that officials have been aware of the issue for some time but have not publicly released details as a strategy to rectify the situation was developed and agreed on. "Climate change and recent extreme weather will have exacerbated the issue", Zapato said.
While the sinkage is presently only a matter of less than a quarter of an inch a year there is the possibility it could worsen significantly in coming years. As recent media reports have highlighted, a growing problem in many countries including the US, is sinkholes. There has been no official word as yet as to whether or not Graceland’s sinkage is sinkhole related. Regardless of the cause, any geological work needed to stop the sinkage would have a major impact on the ability
of EPE to keep the mansion open to the public and more broadly on tourism business in the Memphis area.
United Structural Systems recently reported that Tennessee is vulnerable to sinkholes, and the state is one of a handful requiring insurance companies to provide sinkhole coverage. Those fixes, after all, can be costly. Blame the state's geology for the problem that keeps Kenny Williams busy.
"There's no spot in Tennessee you could build a house and be guaranteed that you'd never be affected by a sinkhole," said Williams, with US Systems.
What causes sinkholes? - Natural sinkholes – as opposed to manmade tunnel or cave collapses – occur when acidic rainwater seeps down through surface soil and sediment, eventually reaching a soluble bedrock such as sandstone, chalk, salt or gypsum, or (most commonly)
a carbonate rock such as limestone beneath. In a process that can last hundreds, sometimes thousands of years, the water gradually dissolves small parts of the rock, enlarging its natural fissures and joints and creating cavities beneath. Depending on how thick and strong that top layer is and how close to the surface the void beneath is, the land may be able to sustain its own weight – and that of whatever we build on top of it. But as the holes grow, there will come a day when the surface layer will simply give way.
Only last month a massive sinkhole opened inside nearby Kentucky's National Corvette Museum, (photo above) swallowing eight cars and sending officials into a frenzy trying to lift the muscle cars to safety. Officials were tipped off when the security alarm went off. No one was hurt in the accident. “No one was in or around the museum at the time,” the museum said in a statement. “The Bowling Green Fire Department arrived on the scene and secured the area. The Fire Department has estimated the size of the hole is 40 feet across and 25-30 feet deep. - See USA TODAY report here. (News, Source;NP/ElvisInfoNet)

While Elvis' Hollywood years are full of mystery, and Elvis Films FAQ covers them all! Elvis Films FAQ explains everything you want to know about the whys and wherefores of the singer-actor's bizarre celluloid odyssey; or, as Elvis said, "I saw the movie and I was the hero of the movie."
"Elvis Films FAQ" was without doubt one of the best Elvis books published in 2013 and EIN wanted to know more from its author Paul Simpson.

‘My Summer with Elvis’ New Film: Yet another Elvis film is in development. ‘My Summer with Elvis’- "One summer, a young girl from Mississippi met a boy who, had big dreams. Their brief romance would forever change their lives" is based on a book by Mississippian Mimi Brower that recalls a summer she spent getting to know a young Elvis.
Independent film Ghost Rider Pictures is already working on “My Summer with Elvis” a screenplay has been written, and filmmakers are currently casting.
“The book is just the jumping-off point for the screenplay,” said Rick Guy, who wrote the screenplay, along with Steve Scaffidi of Ghost Rider, which is based in New Orleans. “The story is based on Mimi Brower, who had the fortune of having a cousin who just happened to be the next door neighbour to a 14-year-old kid with a guitar named Elvis.”
Guy hopes the film will be shot in Mississippi and Louisiana, and maybe Memphis, where much of the film takes place. Because the project is so early in the development phase, it could be a few years before it’s finished.
“We think we’ve got a really good story, and we hope people will see the potential,” he said. “It was fun to write. It’s teenagers in love.” Click HERE for more info at Ghost Rider Pictures (News, Source;Bette/ElvisInfoNet)

Dissecting 'Live on Stage in Memphis': An interesting alternate review from The Suburban.com checking out the new Legacy release.
.... On first listen, Elvis Presley’s 1974 album 'Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis' is just another of Presley’s many live albums released during the 1970s, and its importance lay more in the fact that it was a homecoming concert.
After all, two other live albums 'As Recorded At Madison Square Garden' in 1972 and 'Aloha From Hawaii' in 1973 were also released on the basis of them being high-profile events and both sold very well.
In my mind, musically, the 1972 and 1973 live albums had their moments but were no great shakes. Elvis was like a tiger freed from its cage in his 1969 and 1970 live performances, but by 1971 boredom was starting to set in. There were still good concerts — his February 1972 stand in Las Vegas was extremely good. But he was beginning to wear himself down. However, I always had a soft spot for the Memphis live album. The
performances are better than usual — if not up to the level of the 1969-70 shows — and Elvis is in a much more playful mood. This is significant in that he was in a pretty bad state of mind just months before — his divorce with Priscilla had gone through in October 1973, he had an uninspired studio session in Memphis in July of that year and his prescription drug habit was escalating.
Nineteen seventy-four could have been a turning point. Elvis’s December 1973 Memphis session at the Stax studio was a huge improvement, and a private November 1973 tape of Elvis joking around with his girlfriend Linda Thompson showed signs of a much better state of mind. And based on CDs I’ve heard from the Follow That Dream label that put out much unreleased material, his early 1974 concerts were quite inspired.
The newest version of Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis to be released, commemorating that show’s 40th anniversary pairs the classic Memphis show, with the Richmond, Virginia show performed two days before. And both concerts are great — the performances are jaunty, and Elvis is having a good time fooling around with the songs and the audience. Having listened to many FTD recordings, I found that when Elvis was in a good mood, he would add humour to his otherwise perfunctory performance of Hound Dog by singing "please don’t forget the past, before I kick your..." And he does this in Memphis.
There is no one standout performance on this album, it’s just all good, and fun — especially the rock n’ roll medley that includes Loggins and Messina’s 'Your Mama Don’t Dance'.
But what is really revealing, and heartbreaking, in the Sony Legacy set are the photos in the accompanying 28-page booklet of Elvis on tour throughout ‘74. Never have I seen someone’s appearance change so much in the course of nine months. In some photos, from the March 20 Memphis concert, Elvis’ face appears bloated and he looks rather slightly stocky. In others, shot just two days earlier in Richmond, he looks as good as he did in 1971. In May of that year, he looks lean but considerably older. But on Aug. 28, in Las Vegas, he looks as good as he did in 1969, as he did in photos shot at a karate demonstration in June. But from late 1974 until his final concert in June 1977, he never looked that great again.
I’m not sure what happened to Elvis in late 1974, but earlier that year, on the musical evidence at least, he had a chance to take stock of his life and thrive. It’s unfortunate the lure of medications got in the way. (EIN notes, or his genetic heritage let him down - see story below) Go HERE for the full review. (News, Source;Suburban.com/ElvisInfoNet)
'Destination USA' FTD screw-up: FTD has informed dealers that tracks 1 and 2 on 'Destination USA' Disc 1 have been copied by mistake from the 1974 'Sold Out' FTD release. FTD are going to send out replacement discs with the next FTD releases. However it is a logistical nightmare for dealers to try and keep track of who ordered what and when - so Please make sure you contact your dealer and request a replacement.
In the same way that 'Our Memories Of Elvis' had a fault that was not spotted on the first track of Disc 1, someone at FTD is failing at their job of quality checking.
EIN notes that the new ELVIS "classic Album" release also has a sleeve mistake with each track of the second disc printed with the same duration. "FTD apologises for any inconvenience this has caused." (News, Source;ETM&HM/ElvisInfoNet)
Tupelo Birthplace Sessions video series launches: The Elvis Presley Birthplace launched a new music video series, "Birthplace Sessions," on Wednesday. The video project, headed up by Meredith Martin and Rob Brandon, features bands and artists on the front porch of the birthplace, talking about Elvis’ influence on their music and then performing a song.
Brandon had the idea for the series when officials at the birthplace talked about how famous musicians like Robert Plant and Tom Petty had taken a minute to sing a song on the front porch when they’d visited.
"I asked if I could see the video of the performances, and they said, ‘What video?’ That broke my heart, with the history involved," Brandon said at the series’ launch.
Starting late last fall, Brandon, Martin and Tupelo filmmaker Ken Calloway began filming bands as they stopped to perform in Tupelo.
The first eight videos premiered at the theater in the birthplace and are now online to view for free at birthplacesessions.com. Artists featured in the Birthplace Sessions so far include George Porter Jr., a member of the New Orleans funk band The Meters; Mississippi singer-songwriter Cary Hudson; Americana band Lucero; blues guitarist Cary Morin; and Mooreville country singer-songwriters Aaron Vance.
Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Neal McCoy said the sessions will keep Elvis’ spirit alive. "It continues our message to come to Tupelo and get inspired by what inspired Elvis," he said. (News, Source;PGansky/ElvisInfoNet)

Elvis death 'his genetic destiny': Elvis Presley may have died because of genetic conditions that made him prone to obesity and heart disease - rather than his lifestyle, according to a new UK Channel 4 programme 'Dead Famous DNA'.
DNA analysis on a hair sample thought to have come from the king of rock'n'roll, which was bought from a friend of the singer's barber, has revealed that the singer could have suffered from a heart muscle disease.
The DNA results, analysed by Dr Stephen Kingsmore, showed mutations, known as "variants", which cause migraines, glaucoma and obesity.
Presley, a Southern-Style food addict who relied heavily on prescription drugs, was known to have suffered from headaches and bad eyesight and ballooned in weight towards the end of his life.
Scientists also found a "crucial" variant known to cause hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a heart muscle disease that causes the thickening of the heart and weakening of the heart muscle.
Presley displayed many of the symptoms of this disease, including an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, fainting and high blood pressure.
Elvis' mother Gladys also died young at the age of 46 of a heart attack brought on by acute hepatitis.
Producers said although it was officially known that Presley died of heart failure, the cause of his heart failure was still subject to speculation and had
fuelled a "melting pot" of conspiracy theories.
Kingsmore, director of the Centre for Paediatric Genomic Medicine in Kansas City, described the results as "a smoking gun".
"There had been so much speculation about cause of death, and so much ill spoken of his lifestyle, and we had this intriguing finding that possibly Elvis had a medical illness. For years, Elvis has been blamed for his own death, for overeating or overdosing on drugs," he said.
"Both of these addictions wouldn't have helped. But it seemed Elvis had a flaw in his DNA."
Mr Evans said that they were "very, very confident" that the sample of hair had come from the singer, after spending three years doing their research. "I'm massively confident that is Elvis' DNA but I can't prove it," he said. "I can't tell you 100% that is Elvis' DNA. That's not possible."
Producers wrote to Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley, but said that they have not heard back. (News, Source;UK/ElvisInfoNet)

Lisa Marie plays sold-out Sydney crowd: It certainly is a long lonely highway from Graceland to Hornsby RSL, north Sydney, but singer Lisa Marie Presley didn’t let down her adoring fans, giving a rousing performance last night. She even agreed to meet her supporters after her gig, on the strict condition that none dressed up as her famous dad Elvis or ex-husband Michael Jackson. The Southern girl performed in Australia for the first time in eight years, showcasing her new blues and roots album, Storm and Grace, to a 600-strong audience.
But the RSL’s website warned: “Patrons dressed as Elvis or Michael Jackson will NOT be allowed to attend the meet and greet under any circumstances.”
The club noted, “We’d hope people would respect her for her music talents, that’s what she’s here for, her album.” EIN agrees with that!
And respect her they did, with cries of “I love you” ringing out as the petite singer in a long, black gown and bare feet took to the stage.
“I made a mistake,” Presley said in laid-back Southern fashion. “I came out here with no shoes, I thought there was carpet. So if I slip, I slip.”
With a microphone in one hand and tambourine in the other she performed a majority of songs from 'Storm and Grace'. Lights Out, S.O.B. and I’ll Figure It Out from her first two albums, 2005’s Now What and 2003’s To Whom It May Concern, were also thrown in.
“The live show is a lot more energetic than the record, it’s a little more loud
and lively,” Presley said. “I start off mildly, really break it down for the acoustic, and then we just get louder and louder and louder and take it home.”
Before the performance she enjoyed a day out at Sydney Taronga Zoo with twin daughters Harper and Finley, 5, and 24-year-old daughter Riley Keough. Click here for tickets. - see tour dates below (News, Source;SydneyTele/ElvisInfoNet)

Lisa Marie - What I Know About Men!: Yesterday Australia's Sydney Morning Herald published an interview with Lisa Marie Presley "What I Know About Men". In the article she notes.......
..."I was just nine when my father died, but I had a very special relationship with him. He was the most incredible, enigmatic, powerful, dynamic human being I've ever met. As far as men go, he left big shoes to fill. He is still such a presence in popular culture, but I don't find it odd or surreal – it makes me happy, actually.
- Most of my memories are of being home with him. Our rooms were on the top floor of Graceland. We would sit in my room and watch TV, and spend a lot of time together upstairs alone. He'd take me on golf-cart rides, or we'd visit my grandfather or the pet store.
- My father was very funny, very playful, but he also had a very bad temper. Across the board, he was extreme: either really funny, really playful, or in such a bad mood that people were running for the hills. But he had so many vampires around him, stupid people, and they'd tick him off. He was frustrated sometimes. Like everybody, he was human.
- I didn't find it hard to have a normal life. Things weren't quite like
they are now in the US, where you're in a fishbowl because of celebrity news sites like TMZ. Back then I felt I had a bit of space, and I could privately make my own mistakes and grow up.
- I was comfortable around boys and never found them to be alien at all. But I find men and women different. One thing I will say about men: if they've had a good relationship with their mother, and are close with their mother, they are better partners for women. That is a fact. The best qualities men can have are dedication, loyalty, honesty and refraining from going elsewhere for their needs.
- I don't regret any of my marriages. They were all incredible, fun experiences. Some were marriages of whim – I was wild, they were wild, and we did wild things, but I don't regret them. Each one ended for different reasons. Some I wished didn't end the way they did, but they weren't failures; we just weren't partnered right.
With Michael Jackson, unfortunately, too much happened, too much got between us. There was a very deep strong love there; intense. But people got in the way, on my end and his end. We had so many people telling us what to do and intercepting and speaking on behalf of the other. Had it been just he and I, towards the end, I don't think we would have divorced. - The title track on my album Storm & Grace is written for my son. It's about the kind of pressures and expectations placed on men. It's about how he's got the biggest heart but he's learnt how to put up a protective shell, which isn't necessarily a good thing. When men get hurt, they get more and more protective and closed off. I'm not sure how we can fix that. I wish there was a way." Go HERE to the SMH for the full article (News, Source;SMH/ElvisInfoNet)

Kurt Russell Talks Elvis: Actor Kurt Russell is known for a myriad of roles in movies that span throughout his 52 year career, he even stared as ELVIS (photo right) in John Carpenter's 1979 biopic of the same name. Kurt Russell is an icon that many fans adore to this day.
When Kurt Russell first started his career, he appeared in a number of television shows and supporting roles in a couple of movies. Not many people realize this, but when Kurt Russell was 10 years old, he was able to act alongside the King himself, Elvis Presley in 'It Happened at the World’s Fair' (see pic below) . Recently Melissa Molina asked Russell whether he remembered anything from his interaction with Elvis. When the topic of Elvis came up, he leaned up against the wall, a small twinkle gleamed in his eye as a smile spread across his face. ... “It was my first brush with a real celebrity. I’ve never seen anything having to do with a real celebrity before. I didn’t really know who Elvis Presley was. I was a 10 year old kid. I knew Elvis Presley was a name that everybody knew. If I’d seen him, I didn’t know it. I wasn’t into music and I didn’t listen to music that much. So the first time he came on the set, a car went on the set, round 5000 women just broke through there and jumped on his car. We were all staring and I was thinking what’s going on there. This guy says ‘Well that’s Elvis. We won’t be able to get him in on this round.’ They backed the car up… it was just watching them attack the car. Wow. To a 10 year old kid
it’s like ‘What are they doing? What are they thinking?’ He came out later, through a different way, and he’s just this really nice guy. I was just this kid and I asked him ‘What’s the deal with all those girls jumping on your car?’ He could see that I was just this innocent kid and responded with ‘Ah they get crazy.’ I told him ‘You should never come in that way again, you know.’ So I remember that. I remembered him having his car completely jumped up with girls.”
Kurt Russell's filmography continues to expand as he recently starred in the upcoming heist drama/comedy 'The Art of the Steal'. - Go HERE to see the full interview on ShockYa.com (News, Source;NP/ShockYa/ElvisInfoNet)

UPDATED - 'ELVIS AT 21' Exhibition Review: Alfred Wertheimer's portrait exhibition is at Australia's National Portrait Gallery in Canberra until March 10, 2014. Final weekend this week.
It is incredible to learn that over seven days in 1956 Wertheimer shot over 3,500 photographs of Elvis in the months of March, June, and July in the unbelievable year that "the Memphis Flash" became the iconic "Elvis the Pelvis".
The Sydney Morning Herald’s John Mcdonald checks out the Alfred Wertheimer exhibition that is not to be missed.
Glorious chapters of in-depth discussion and fascinating minutiae about Elvis films are interspersed with equally fascinating chapters bringing to life the excitement and glamour of both Hollywood (from its early days of silent movies to the late 1960s) and many of its most famous stars.
"60 Years of Elvis" EIN Exhibition Preview: In the new Graceland exhibition fans can explore the birth of rock ‘n’ roll music and journey through the transformation of the would-be King of Rock ‘n’ Roll from delivery truck driver to world-wide singing sensation and star of the silver screen.
Elvis Live In Canada 1957 - Unreleased Footage: Sadly in very poor quality but 6 minutes of rare Canadian Elvis Live footage.
You can however hear the crowds roar and the imagine the excitement created by Elvis at the time. "Due to the screams, you couldn't hear him sing but you could see his lips move!"
Toronto, Maple Leaf Gardens, April 2nd, believed to be the second concert.
If only the original films could be found and remastered.
"I Want him, I Love him, I Need him" indeed.
"At War With Elvis Presley" by Johnnie Ray!: Taken from an old kinescope, a lovely tongue-in-cheek comedy TV skit showing the futility in trying to compete with Elvis in the mid-50's. Johnnie Ray had a massive pop success in the early 1950s as was somewhat of a precursor to Elvis. His single 'Cry' was a smash Number 1 and his performances caused also caused teenage hysteria. 'Just Walkin' In the Rain' was another smash for him.
He also recorded the song 'Such A Night' in 1954 but it was however an extremely bland version compared to Elvis' 1960 remake.
Johnnie Ray's popularity started to decline after 1956 once Elvis and the real Rock'n'Roll hit the mainstream. Watch this cute 2 minute clip here via YouTube. (News, Source;BrianQuinn/ElvisInfoNet)
Mick Jagger also confirms New Elvis Movie: The legendary Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger has opened up about his desire to move from music to movies and also confirms his producer involvement with the new Elvis bio-pic. The iconic musician, 70, is currently tracking the lives of other famous movers - producing the James Brown biopic 'Get On Up' followed by the new Elvis Presley biopic 'Last Train to Memphis'.
The rock star told the Hollywood Reporter he can't get no satisfaction from writing his memoirs, and preferred to take on new projects instead.
Sir Mick said: "I think the rock 'n' roll memoir is a glutted market. I'd rather be doing something new. I'd rather be making new films, making new music, be touring. If someone wants to know what I did in 1965, they can look it up on Wikipedia without even spending any money."
Author Peter Guralnick confirmed the new Elvis Movie of his book to EIN last week. (See february story) (News, Source;HR/ElvisInfoNet)
