When the tornadoes hit the mid-south of America in early April 2006, Elvis World publisher, Bill E. Burk sent out this message. It provides a very interesting history of twisters in the Mississippi-Tennessee area, Bill's theory on why twisters never touch the center of Memphis, and an indication of how close they have come to Graceland: We thank all of you who have e-mailed or called from around the world after seeing TV clips of the tornadoes that hit the Mid-South Sunday evening, 2 April. Thankfully, the tornadoes did not touch down in MEM (and we will discuss my theory in a moment). They hit worst in Dyer and Gibson Counties, about 70-80 miles north and northeast of MEM, killing 24 and causing millions of $$$s in damage.
The Bluff does not extend all the way along MEM's north-side border, so they cross over from their West Memphis-Marion Arkansas line and hit the flatland to the north, hitting Frayser and Millington, immediately to our north.
Whitehaven (Graceland) has pretty well been spared, but at least 3 tornadoes have crossed the river near the Chucalissa Indian Village and come as far as three blocks west of EP Blvd. on two occasions and on another, all the way to the airport.
Well, later, I went out back and saw the path of this tornado. It had crossed the river at the Indian Village and headed due east, RIGHT TOWARD my patio door! Then, as only God and Tornadoes can explain, after tearing down trees and houses for 4.9 miles, it hit my back fence, took a sharp 90 degree turn north, went up to Brooks Road (500 feet away), took a 90 degree turn right and went out to the north side of the airport and turned 33 private planes over.
But to come 4.9 miles straight, then within 150 feet of my patio door, take a sharp left, and leave my entire property alone, defies all logic.
IN JUNE 1978, we had another that touched down at the northwest corner of my house, twisting a cottonwood tree (4 feet at the bottom and 110 feet tall) out of the ground, roots and all, and flopping it due south, parallel to my house -- not touching one shingle on our roof. It continued 500 feet south, up the hill, then went skyward again and never touched down again. And it stayed in all 5 backyards !
ON THE THIRD occasion, I was on military duty and was dispatched to the Indian Village area to see what damage had been done and what we, the military, could do to help.
Just outside the village, the twister had touched down. An elderly black woman was living alone in a tiny shack that would remind you of EP's birthplace. For shade, she had tall oak trees at all four corners of her house.
The twister had blown all 4 trees down, but didn't touch one inch of her house.
She told us, "My Lord Jesus Christ was with me!" And I told her she had that right.
MY DAUGHTER moved in 1987 to California and went to work and got all tied up in the October 1987 earthquake that hit San Francisco.
A year or two later, they moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, and she experienced her first (of now, many) hurricanes.
She called after her first hurricane and said, "Daddy, I want to come home. After earthquakes and hurricanes, I'd be happy just to have to worry about tornadoes again."
Sunday night's winds were measured up to 255 mph ! Tis been reported Sunday was the worst tornado day in some 60 years in this area.
But, once more, MEM dodged the bullet.
