'Elvis Live 1972 (2-LP)' New RCA Vinyl: In a surprise move we hear from "Bear Family" records that there will be a new RCA double-vinyl release from 'Elvis On Tour', 'Elvis Live 1972'
Interestingly it features a "best of" the four concerts listed below, thus creating the "ultimate tracklist", although the final side then features some kind of Col Parker "Bonus Tracks"...
April 9, 1972 - Hampton Roads Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia
April 10, 1972 - Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Virginia
April 14, 1972 at Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, North Carolina
April 18, 1972 Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas
Release date 27 January 2023
The tracklist however looks most enjoyable.
Priced at $57 I'm looking forward to this one

New FTD Releases: Two new FTD releases have been announced, for early November, a live 1971 soundboard and World's Fair VINYL but surprisingly nothing mentioned about the new 'ON TOUR' deluxe FTD set.
1. 'Las Vegas `71'. FTD's second 3cd set in a row, 'Las Vegas '71' is released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak and the set features three 1971 concerts recorded at the International Hotel on January 27 / 28 Midnight shows and January 29 Dinner show.
Recorded by Bill Porter, the tapes unfortunately have imperfections, but we have prioritized the historic importance and rarity of these recordings.
EIN NOTE: The odd fact is that these three concerts have been out on bootleg for years and have recently been released as "Public Domain" by the MRS label. To FTD collectors there are not rare at all.
Obviously the 50 year EU Public Domain rule expired last year so why FTD did not release them in 2021 makes no sense. FTD are fully aware of PD rules and must be struggling to get their On Tour material out before the end of the year.

2. 'It Happened At The World’s Fair': Continuing their series of unique double-vinyl releases, FTD is pleased to announce the release of 'It Happened At The World’s Fair' as a 2-LP LIMITED EDITION.

The publicity notes, "Bonus tracks include “Witchcraft (takes 3/M)”, “Love Me Tonight (takes 6-8/M)” and “Slowly But Surely (take 5/M)" - although EIN cannot find them on the announced tracklists nor album cover.

RCA/Legacy's Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang.

Disc 6 completes Elvis' rehearsals with his band at RCA Recordings Studios on March 31, 1972. The disc includes previously unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson's 'For The Good Times' plus others already released.
As Elvis Presley’s national tour played to sold-out secondary markets across the country in 1972, Elvis was enjoying himself on-stage and finding electrifying new ways of connecting to audiences at every show. Working with a band and set lists of his choosing, Elvis was channeling the music he loved most--from pop and gospel and traditional country to blues and rock and contemporary hits--while transforming his own greatest hits with fresh arrangements, turning nostalgia into an unforgettable concert experience packed with immediacy.
-
Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel (Mad Dogs & Englishmen) went on the road with Elvis Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and crew to chronicle the
King of Rock & Roll at his on-stage peak in MGM’s Elvis On Tour documentary film. The film captures Elvis, the human being driving the myth, behind-the-scenes backstage with his eyes open and his defenses down. According to MGM's original press release, the Elvis On Tour film "offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world's most celebrated musician." Both documentary and concert film, Elvis On Tour features

montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese. The film was released on November 1, 1972.
-
The Elvis On Tour box set includes fascinating behind-the-scenes liner notes by Jerry Schilling, a longtime personal friend and member of Elvis' inner circle.
-
The set also features an illuminating essay by rock historian/musician Warren Zanes, founding member of The Del Fuegos and Professor at New York University. According to Zanes: "The set lists and the performances of the Elvis On Tour period bring a rare thing: a fifties legend working in the early seventies who was still taking his audiences to new places.... "

Diplo & Swae Lee 'Tupelo Shuffle': Another track released from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ELVIS, this time Diplo & Swae Lee 'Tupelo Shuffle'.
At the Sydney Premiere director Baz Luhrmann noted the interesting connection that both DJ / songwriter Diplo and US rapper Swae Lee were both actually from Tupelo! Now that's a coincidence.
As the movie's credits rolled Luhrmann who was on-stage made a special mention of this track.

Doja Cat - 'Vegas' (Official Video): Finally the official video for the lead single from the 'ELVIS' soundtrack.
If you are a longtime Elvis fan who doesn't understand why this would be the lead single from the film you need to know that Doja Cat (aged 26) has already sold 12.5 million albums and her first album reached 4.6 billion streams on Spotify. She has received one Grammy Award, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards.
As Doja Cat fan Shantel Killion commented, "Her voice is AMAZING!! And Doja My Queen You NEVER Disappoints!! I am so Proud of you embracing Big Mama

Thornton's version. I am from Memphis TENN!! and Elvis was loved in the Black community! People need to know that. This is no shade to him but much Homage to a Lady that is well deserving of her rendition of Hound Dog!! Thank You!!"

FTD New July Releases: FTD are releasing two neat collections for July 2022. The "complete" 1963/64 ‘Lost Album’ Sessions plus a 3CD set of three 1973 Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe Midnight shows.
- 'Devil In Disguise: the ‘Lost Album’ Sessions' 3-CD.
As part of its acclaimed ‘Sessions' series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of Elvis Presley: Devil In Disguise – The ‘Lost Album’ Sessions - in the usual 3-CD 8” digi-pak with 28-page booklet. Recorded, for the most part, over two days in July 1963, these varied and excellent performances ended up being scattered over several RCA Victor releases between 1963 and 1968. It would not be until 1990 that the songs finally appeared as originally intended on a proper RCA vinyl album. Almost 60-years later, FTD presents all of the masters and outtakes available from the sessions.
EIN Note: All the tracks except 'Love Me Tonight'  take 7 false start were previously released on FTD's 'Memphis Tennessee' 2008 Classic Album. Hopefully there will be more unreleased 'count ins' and snippets of
studio banter but there is not much more here that hasn't already been released. Check out the released tracks at Keith Flynn's brilliant website.
Of course if you enjoy the FTD "Complete Sessions" concept then it has to be a essential purchase to follow on from their wonderful 'Pot Luck Sessions'

- 'Elvis: From Vegas To Tahoe' 3-CD
As part of its ongoing live on tour series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of Elvis: From Vegas To Tahoe. Released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak, this set features three 1973 midnight shows recorded on January 27 / February 21 (Las Vegas Hilton) and May 12 1973 (High Sierra Theatre, Sahara Hotel, Lake Tahoe)

EIN Note: Two tracks from May 12 1973 concert have been previously released by FTD on 2003’s ‘Takin’ Tahoe Tonight’ and they were rather good. See review here. Elvis was still in good form in 1973 and all three are ‘Midnight Shows’ making them all the more interesting.  Including You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, Steamroller Blues, I’m Leavin’, What Now My Love and I’ll Remember You, this could be a very enjoyable set. Note that it is priced at a 1/3 more than the usual FTD double-live set.

'ELVIS' movie soundtrack album: The full artist lineup for the ELVIS soundtrack has been revealed (but not all the tracks they are performing) and among those takin’ care of business on the album are Eminem, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Jack White and Jazmine Sullivan.
We already know that Kacey Musgraves will be singing 'Can’t Help Falling in Love' for the film, that Måneskin will perform their take on 'If I Can Dream' and the already released Doja Cat single 'Vegas' (with Hound Dog sample).
But there are still plenty of surprises in the artists announcement. Notable others include Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Jack White plus CeeLo Green as a collaborator with Eminem, the combination of Swae Lee and Diplo, Chris Isaak, Pnau among others.
The artists list also includes plenty of cast members whose contributions are no doubt featured in the movie, such as Austin Butler, Yola (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), Gary Clark Jr. (Arthur “Bigboy” Crudup), Shonka Dukereh (Big Mama Thornton), Alton Mason (Little Richard) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Jimmie Rodgers).
Top-billing still goes to Elvis Aaron Presley and rock'n'roll fans will be happy to see the late Rufus Thomas also listed as a contributor.

Kacey Musgraves 'Can’t Help Falling in Love' in ELVIS Biopic: American singer / songwriter Kacey Musgraves is a million-seller with six Grammy awards plus an RIAA platinum certification. She was also at the Met Gala to promote ELVIS, because as Baz Luhrmann revealed she has covered Elvis' 'Can’t Help Falling In Love' for the movie soundtrack.
When released in 1961 'Can’t Help Falling in Love' reached No.1 in the UK, a US Billboard No.2 (backed with 'Rock-A-Hula Baby') and was a key part of Elvis' biggest selling album Blue Hawaii. It was later covered by everyone from Doris Day, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Boby Dylan and more recently U2, UB40, Andrea Bocelli, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Chris Isaak, and more.
Kacey Musgraves who has won a Grammy Award for 'Best Country Song' is in a very different musical genre to the already previewed 'Doja Cat' single 'Vegas'. This goes to show how diverse and imaginative Baz Luhrmann is with his movie soundtracks - as his previous films have all shown.
The RCA soundtrack is set for release on June 24. Musgraves is currently on a US tour in support of her 2021 album 'Star-Crossed'.

More Artists Announced for ‘ELVIS’ Soundtrack Album: RCA Records is set to release the ELVIS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack this summer for Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming film ELVIS, in theaters June 24th, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. While the lead single, Doja Cat’s “Vegas” (which incorporates “Hound Dog”) will be released May 6th other new artists involved in the film soundtrack were flagged this week by director Baz Luhrmann. These artists are Australia's Tame Impala, American singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, Dance-music veteran Diplo with Swae Lee, Chris Isaak, Stevie Nicks among others. Luhrmann explained, “You’ll hear Elvis sing the classics but right next door Doja Cat will be doing an interpretation of Hound Dog while Big Mama Thornton [Shonka Dukureh] sings it.”
The RCA "ELVIS" soundtrack will feature Elvis’ extraordinary body of work spanning the 1950s, 60s and 70s, while also celebrating his diverse musical influences and enduring impact on popular artists today.
At Coachella, Luhrmann called Uk singer Yola “a powerhouse voice full of song, plus a beautiful soul. She was so devoted to playing the role, she came all the way to Australia and captured the detail of how Sister Rosetta
Tharpe expressed herself on stage for the film” as well as pre-recording tracks in Nashville. He also lauded Doja Cat, who previewed her single "Vegas", saying that her live performance was brilliant and that “the whole cast and crew are so thrilled and proud.”
Luhrmann is back in Australia still working on final post-production for the film which will get a worldwide cinema release on June 23 / 24.
Elvis fans who are concerned about "new" artists involved in the ELVIS soundtrack have to realise that artists such as Doja Cat’s 'Planet Her' lead single 'Kiss Me More' is certified RIAA platinum and has had over 2.8 billion streams worldwide. These statistics help show the importance of getting Elvis' music out to the new generation.

2- “Kid Galahad” (2-LP Limited Edition)
FTD is pleased to announce the release of the first official ‘Kid Galahad’ vinyl soundtrack album. It is hard to believe that it was 60 years ago that this movie first made its debut. “King Of  The Whole Wide World” sounds as fresh today as it did then.

'Elvis: South Bound- Tampa / Atlanta '75' FTD in-depth Review: Mid 1975 found Elvis back in good form and having fun on stage. This 5" digipack double-soundboard features two more concerts from Elvis' 1975 Spring Tour. The Tampa April 26, 1975 Afternoon show at Curtis Hixon Convention Center plus Atlanta Omni Coliseum May 2, 1975 Evening Show.
Unfortunately soundboards from the start of this tour all have the same inherent 'problem' a HEAVY bias towards Piano tracks, there was often very little drums or orchestra in the mix. So can this release show us anything new?
But while collectors are right to be a little reticent about “Afternoon Shows” this soundboard is surprisingly enjoyable...

Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley check out the reality of this new FTD double-pack and discover Elvis having fun with his loving fans ..

'Aloha From Hawaii' FTD 3CD set: When seeking key career highpoints, Elvis’ multi-faceted musical legacy certainly divides opinion amongst fans and critics alike. However, if one goes by the sales and the audience viewing numbers too, there is only one answer. Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite.
- RCA’s double album of the show was released throughout the world in February and shot to the #1 spot in many countries including the U.S. The album went to #1 on the Billboard album chart and reigned supreme from late February until late October, re-entering in late December for another two months. Today in the U.S. the album stands at 5.5 million sales and is certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA.
- To acknowledge this achievement, FTD is proud to present an upgraded re-release of Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite utilizing the talents of successful Memphian recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang who has newly remixed the original broadcasted show and the after-concert 3:00 AM crowd-less masters including rehearsal performances for the first time. Also included is the Sony Legacy 2013 remix of the rehearsal show from January 12. (Recommended by EIN! See review)
- Packaged in FTD's ‘complete sessions’ style 8” x 8” slipcase, this deluxe 3-CD contains a 28-page color booklet, great photos, memorabilia and insightful essay.
CD3 Features the extra tracks recorded after the audience had gone home (EIN Note: Who thought that was a fair idea!!) several of these outakes / rehearsals have not been previously released officially.
- Priced around £45 = US$62 - To be released next month.

"Elvis: Back in Nashville" Out Now!: The official announcement from SONY that the long-awaited box-set is officially released.
The SONY publicity notes... This comprehensive collection chronicles Elvis’ fabled 1971 marathon recording session that would be his final session in Nashville.
These pristine recordings reveal some of the most compelling singing of his career and include “I’m Leavin’,” “My Way,” and “If Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear To Tread).”
EIN NOTE: Sadly the song is called "Fools Rush In" and not  “If Fools Rush In"!
"Elvis: Back in Nashville" is an essential addition to any collection.
Like its predecessor 'Elvis: Back In Nashville' is designed to showcase Elvis and his core band as they sounded during the actual sessions without orchestral overdubs and vocal accompaniment. A key difference between Elvis’ 1970 and 1971 Nashville sessions is that many of the 1971 recordings included backing singers; therefore, 'Elvis: Back In Nashville' offers a variety of song performances both with and without vocal augmentation.
This amazing collection is available on vinyl 2 LP 12” edition and 4-CD Box Set!

"Elvis Back In Nashville" 8/10 Review: It's great to see the mainstream music press already giving truly positive reviews to the new "Elvis Back In Nashville" box-set that comes out next week.
UNCUT uk music magazine have already reviewed it noting....
"The King's final recordings in the country music capital"
Elvis Presley was more ambitious than his late career output might suggest.
During his 1971 sessions in Nashville, he cut tracks for his dream project: a folk-rock record featuring songs by Buffy Sainte-Marie, Kris Kristofferson and others. Sadly, it never saw the light of day, and tracks from those sessions were scattered across cookie-cutter collections throughout the'70s.
'Elvis Back In Nashville' collects those recordings in one place, showcasing his stylistic range (gospel, carols, standards... you name it) and offering a glimpse of what might have been.
Despite being sold as a nostalgia act, Elvis was absolutely devoted to whatever he song he was singing. He immersed himself in the story and invested each line with nuance and character, whether it's the casually funky "Put Your Hand In The Hand" or the delicate "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (recorded while he had the flu).
Box-Set rates 8/10.
Extras: 6/10. Archival photos and liner notes by David Cantwell.

You can also have a sneak preview of 30 seconds of every track via PlatoMania - CLICK HERE to listen

“I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen” New Promo Video: The new 50th Anniv release 'Elvis Back In Nashville' is out next month, Nov 12.
On May 20, 1971 in the early hours of the morning, having laid down a few tracks for his up-coming Gospel album, Elvis sat down at the piano on his own and trying to relive the emotion of singing alone in Graceland, Elvis sang three old favourites for his studio friends.
These were two by Ivory Joe Hunter 'It's Still Here' and 'I Will Be True' plus an old classic 'I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen'.
Elvis singing alone playing piano in Studio B was a totally unique situation and was luckily recorded by RCA.
Elvis only sang the one take. This was overdubbed by Felton Jarvis for release -Go here to YouTube to watch.

Three New FTD Releases for November: After a few quiet months - see FTD fire story below - FTD announce three new releases for next month. The long-awaited "Pot Luck Sessions" as a 5cd set, a Spring 1975 double- soundboard from Tampa and Atlanta (both previously unreleased) and the 'Raised On Rock' double VINYL.

- 'Elvis: The Pot Luck Sessions' 5cd box-set: FTD’s acclaimed series continues with one of the most commercially successful recording sessions of Elvis’ career 'The Pot Luck Sessions'.
It is without doubt the ultimate triumph for Hill & Range’s song plugger Freddy Bienstock. Superbly crafted hits like “Little Sister”, (Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame”, “Good Luck Charm” and She’s Not You” dominated pop charts throughout the world in the early ‘60s and Elvis’ flawless performances accompanied by Nashville’s finest musicians still resonate today some 60 years later.

If “Easy Question”, “Suspicion” “I’m Yours” and “Kiss Me Quick” had been released as 45 rpm singles during this fertile period, and not years after, undoubtedly each could have matched the chartbusting success of the others.
This remastered 5-CD boxed set includes a 28-page booklet featuring an insightful essay, rare photographs, memorabilia, and recording data

- 'Elvis: South Bound' 2cd Soundboard: As part of its ongoing live on tour series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of 'Elvis: South Bound Tampa / Atlanta ‘75'.
Released as a 2-CD 5” digi-pak, this set features Elvis' two shows: Curtis Hixon Convention Center, Tampa, April 26, 1975 (2:30 PM) and Omni Coliseum, Atlanta, May 2, 1975 (8:30 PM)
Both soundboards are incomplete with both concerts starting after 'I Got A Woman' with Elvis' third song 'Love Me'...
EIN Note: in 2017 FTD released 'Elvis In Altanta' two of his three 1975 shows that he performed in this tour. At the time we noted that the audio mix left a little to be desired "The sound quality is what we expect from this tour with VERY prominent Piano and Voices but with everything else - drums, guitar, orchestra - way in the background. The benefit is you can easily hear Elvis" but we also noted "There is no doubt that he was well loved by his adoring audiences in Atlanta. The Omni ‘Opening Night’ captures a great crowd reaction and Elvis truly enjoying himself on stage. Worth playing several times." lets hope his final Omni performance is as good.

FTD Fire Down Below: The original September FTD release news we were expecting suddenly never happened. It seemed that something had gone wrong - and indeed we have the terrible news confirmed today that there has been a fire at the Denmark Impulse warehouse where all the FTD stock is stored.
FTD's Roger Semon has said that the fire was a few weeks ago and a lot of older stock - "almost the entire FTD catalogue" according to some - has been destroyed.

The fire luckily did not go through the whole factory. Fingers crossed that some stock may be recovered.
EIN is not sure if this has affected release of the new FTD 'Making Of Jailhouse Rock' book from David English.

'Elvis: Fort Worth, Texas 1974' FTD in-depth Review: This FTD double-pack features two concerts from Elvis’ third tour of 1974, both performances from Father's Day in Fort Worth, Texas, June 16 1974. Elvis performed four shows at the 14,000 seater Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth Texas. These were the first four shows of Elvis' Tour #11 so he was ready to rock. Reviews included, "Elvis put on one sharp, uptown and professional show. Wrapped skintight or loosely white bellbottoms and waist-length jacket. Elvis had the show in the palm of his hand".
In fine humour, at the evening show Elvis jokes that the whole band are from Texas... “John Wilkinson from Waco Texas, Ronnie Tutt from Dallas Texas, Duke Bardwell from Abilene Texas, Charlie Hodge from Decateur Texas, Voice from Nashville Texas and Joe Guercio with the all-Texas choir band! And I’m from Tupelo, Texas."
Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley give you the complete low-down on this new FTD double-pack ....

'Think Twice: Elvis in The Studio 1971': The forthcoming 'Back In Nashville' boxset is going to shine the spotlight on Elvis' 1971 sessions which have traditionally been ignored by the official label. In this fascinating and detailed article EIN contributor Shane Brown examines these all too easily dismissed Nashville sessions and discovers some real gems.
It’s very easy to look at the March, May and June 1971 recordings out of context. While the recordings are certainly not up to the standard of those from June 1970, it’s also true to say that Elvis was in a very different place personally by spring 1971.
In June 1970 Elvis was riding the crest of a wave with his recent successes but by January 1971 he was in the newspapers due to an ongoing paternity suit.
The Presley’s marriage was on the rocks and Elvis was having problems with his eyes.
However despite all of this there was something very interesting going on during the 1971 sessions.
Find out more as Shane Brown investigates these controversial 1971 Nashville Sessions....
