"Janis and Elvis" reissue on CD: Now 50 years on from the legendary original issue, El Toro Records offers a new CD version to mark the golden anniversary of the brief union of Janis Martin and Elvis Presley, boosted with 18 additional tracks to take advantage of the CD medium.
Synopsis: One of the rarest and most sought-after record releases from the last half-century of Elvis Presley collectibles, South Africa's 10" LP 'Janis and Elvis' was issued in 1958 through Teal Records, the company who had the local license to issue RCA records in South Africa at the time. The elusive original LP now commands figures in excess of $5,000. |
|
Featuring just four songs apiece from the two artists featured (the first eight tracks of this CD), the Elvis selection was inexplicably drawn entirely from his Sun recordings with Scotty Moore and Bill Black – specifically from his third and fourth Sun singles from 1955 – while Janis Martin's tracks were gleaned from her second and fourth RCA singles from 1956. Amazingly, although it had formed half of her third release, Janis's now famous early tribute to the Hillbilly Cat - 'My Boy Elvis' - was not even considered for inclusion on the LP.
A sad postscript. After years out of the music scene, in recent times Janis - "The Female Elvis", as she'd been dubbed by RCA - was back in business, performing and recording a new album produced by Rosie Flores. She'd been due to appear at an Americana Festival in Britain earlier this year and then again at the Rhythm Riot, Camber Sands, this coming November. Shortly before the first event she fell ill, by late August she'd been diagnosed with terminal cancer, within two weeks she passed way on 3rd September. This CD release was of course planned long before the rapid and tragic turn of events. R.I.P.

"Elvis' Grave" (DVD Review): One of Elvis world's most obscure films is now available on DVD....Elvis' Grave.
Blending elements from the infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre and classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, the plot of this low budget feature is described as:
"A Chainsaw wielding, psycho-impersonator from hell -- on a conquest tour of terror!"
Read EIN's full review of this offbeat 'B' grade film, a film with a scorching rock 'n' roll soundtrack...but does it live up to its pr as a "Southern Gothic Musical"...or is it something even more sinister?
Rated NR for Nauseating Repulsive, this is a film which gives new meaning to the ETA phenomenon!! Blair Witch cohorts...move over! (DVD Review, Source: EIN) |

"Leaves of Elvis' garden (Book Review): On her return from Elvis Week 2007, Susan MacDougall sat down to delve inside the latest book from Larry Geller, one which looks at Elvis' spiritual search. What Susan found was both interesting and challenging, as these excerpts from her insightful review attest:
Behind the distorted image of a hard-living rock and roll sex symbol and super star is revealed a vulnerable man with a thirst for understanding and enlightenment.
Elvis believed that there is one God who is within us all..........At the same time, Elvis never rejected his religion, only its rigid adherents and their intolerance of any deviation from the accepted word, remaining a Christian his whole life, but not a Christian to the exclusion of anything else.
In closing her review Susan observes: "Leaves of Elvis' garden" provides a whole different side to the public image of a celebrity. Geller was never the Memphis Mafia's favourite person, but they can't deny his existence and his access to Elvis. I wonder what certain members of the MM will make of this book? I challenge them to read it. Read full review (Book Review, Source: EIN) |

'The American Way Vol.5 - Goin' Home To Memphis': CD SNEAK PREVIEW : Last week EIN received a test pressing of 'The American Way Vol.5: Goin' Home To Memphis' the final instalment in this great series from the Southern Comfort label. Elvis' 1969 ‘American Studio’ sessions are featured in the first half of the CD and include some fabulous and unknown "Rough Mixes". We also get to hear Elvis Live in 1970, while the amazingly rare outakes of the 1968 'Goin Home' sessions fill the CD up to the brim. To be honest my house has been rockin' with the funk all week - and I have also been laughin' my *** off. Does an Elvis reviewer's life get any more fun than this! Although this is not the absolute final product, please enjoy our special Sneak Preview. Make sure you don't miss out. (CD Review, Source: EIN, September 2007) |

"October Encore in Lake Tahoe" CD: The forthcoming "MEMORY Records" label CD release is entitled "October Encore In Lake Tahoe " (CD MR 2055-2). As most die-hard fans know, in Elvis did a short eight-show stint in Tahoe, more or less as an encore, to fulfill his contract after the cancellation of the May 1973 engagement.
There are only two recordings available from this engagement, and the only other known tape is that of the mediocre October 13th midnight show. The tape with the Dinner show, presented on this CD, is of very good sound quality. Elvis performed in high gear, thrilling the crowd with a funny version of Fever, a poignant "It's Midnight " and the absolute showstopper, a great reading of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Three songs got the last verse reprised, too. |
|
This is a rare, previously unavailable recording. We were able to obtain the 1st generation copy of the original master tape, as recorded by a member of the audience. The sound was transferred in its original mono format, and all tracks were digitally restored for best possible sound reproduction. The CD contains 8-page booklet (not so common for MEMORY Records) with many photographs taken during the Lake Tahoe October 12th dinner & midnight shows and the October 14th dinner show. We hope you will enjoy this CD as a presentation of an unique October 1974 performance of The Elvis Presley Show which, until this historic release, has not been previously represented in good sound quality!

"Contract with the King" (Book Review): Contract with the King is the debut novel for Paul Pullen. It is a superb piece of storytelling with finely drawn characters and a strong moral center.
As you read Contract with the King you find emotional challenges and emotional highs and lows which have personal resonance. At times humorous, at times symbolic, from the opening few pages you know you are in for an entertaining ride.
The key narrative premise, the kidnapping of Elvis Presley, is so well realised that the reader....Read full review (Book Review, Source: EIN)

'Viva Las Vegas' ABC TV special review: This was the mainstream TV focus of this year's 30th Anniversary.
The promos for the program raised Elvis' fans expectations since it promised "never before seen footage", as well as the idea of a re-evaluation of Elvis' triumphs in Vegas between 1969 to 1976 - as the program noted "in 1969 Vegas was a haven for has-beens."
In the end however it comes across as more of a pretty good overall view of Elvis for the general public rather than any revelation for the hard-core Elvis fan.
|
|
The program starts with a historical update on Elvis' past. His creation of 'Rock'n'Roll' in SUN through to the terrible mid-sixties movies. The commentators are the usual EPE suspects, (Priscilla, Jerry Schilling, Joe Esposito) but it was good to see enthusiastic fans such as Chris Isaak, Faith Hill, 50 Cent and Beyonce involved. Fans will also spot erroneous dismissive statements like "In 1968 Elvis hadn't had a hit record in seven years." Read EIN's full review and your feedback about the program
"Viva Las Vegas" new Deluxe DVD Review: Elvis movies aren't for everyone. They're cheesy, and they have flimsy plots. Even Colonel Parker viewed them as primarily moneymaking endeavors.
That said, they have plenty of adoring fans and, well, who doesn't want the pure escapism of a movie like Viva Las Vegas from time to time?

'The American Way, Vol 5 - Goin' Home To Memphis' new CD release: After four fantastic volumes, number 5 of "The American Way", subtitled "Goin' Home To Memphis" will be released in a couple of weeks.
This volume will be a mix of the (same) American Sound Studio sessions, some live tracks and many takes of "Goin' Home" (1968). The cover will be the "1968 version", but for those that liked the "1970 version" better: that one will be on the back, so you can turn the booklet and make your favourite the front. This is what Southern Comfort has to say about its next release:
|
|
"There was a time, not too long ago, when an import CD accompanied with a nice bonus photo booklet meant value for money. "Remastered from best possible tape source", was not just a bag of hot air... Nowadays, just about every import label buries you, the potential buyer, under an endless and often meaningless list of 'PR' rap. Southern Comfort doesn't need cheap promises to sell their product. We're the best. And we have 4 volumes to prove it. Volume 5 is on its way. We hope you will enjoy the results of our labour. The expected release date is early October."

"Protecting The King" (DVD Review): EIN's Nigel Patterson recently warmed up his home theater to view David Stanley's directorial film debut, "Protecting The King". It is the story of Stanley's coming of age, his loss of innocence after becoming one of the King's bodyguards while still a teenager.
With a mixed emotional element but several very powerful scenes and flashes of important insight, "Protecting The King" proves to be a strong directorial debut by Stanley.
At times the film has a brutally frank edge, and this is unlikely to endear it to some fans. However, it will have merit for those wishing to better understand life around Elvis with its incredible pressures and temptations; and for fans interested in exploring the human frailties and weaknesses which often afflict those thrust into such a surreal existence. Bill Burk slams upcoming George Klein book: Elvis World's Bill E. Burk recently received a review copy of George Klein's upcoming book, "Elvis Presley Family Album".
To say Bill was less than impressed is an understatement. Bill found the book to be riddled with errors and he says 99.99999% of the photos have been released before. Also, several of the photos are incorrectly identified and there are no one-on-one photos of George with Elvis during their Humes High years when George became Elvis' best friend. Synopsis: Although this concert were released in two different imports years ago here you have the opportunity to listen it complete and in a really different and improved sound. The use of an early generation soundboarding mono tape gives us the possibility to focus our works |
|
in reduction the loud plosives and low frequencies noise trying to get a more clear sound and give new life overall to Elvis voice, keeping the Elvis’ vocal power up in the central mix and in the same time to give a new definition to the background music.
Closing night Vegas August 1974, a very famous night widely bootlegged since the 1980's vinyl releases. In spite high energy and surprisingly good and is a fairly long show mostly remember this show for the “DRUG” Dialogue. During the years we have heard and read a lot about that, mostly trying to put in every way in bad light Elvis, forgetting like often happened in Elvis’ life: the MUSIC. Here you have the possibility to listen the show in complete way, a show 96 minutes long and we think the crowd definitely got their money's worth that evening!
Elvis' performance is superb, Elvis is still to the top if his possibility he deliveries a long show very intense, a freshness that cannot be denied , Elvis was on stage in very energetic way full of enthusiasm he sang with power and the sensitive way, spacing overall in a solid and felt repertoire like the new song It’s midnight and the classic You gave me a Mountain here sang in splendid way.
In the same time he worked heavy in rock songs like Big Boss Man and the show stopper If you talk in your sleep. This season will be remember for the great opening night and naturally for the Closing Nights from the numerous dialogues but from the superb music too, Elvis appear fantastic and is clear that in spite all the music keeps is brain active.
The packaging will come with a 16 page booklet professional edited, picture disc, relevant liner notes and over 20 photographs mostly never released from Elvis two-piece leather suit used in this specific closing night. All the pictures have been digitally restored in the matter to obtain the best video quality. This is not a new show...but the package, the 95,40 minutes of superb music give us definitely something different a different kind of product ! The Definitive one in reference to Elvis from August 1974. An unbelievable SOUND, A fantastic booklet with Elvis rarely in so such great shape;

'The American Way Vol.5; Goin' Home To Memphis', new CD release: After months of anticipation Southern Comfort announce the final CD in their highly sort after 'American Way' series. The CD is to be called "The American Way Vol.5, Goin' Home To Memphis" however two different cover designs have been sent to EIN. Southern Comfort say the final design has not be decided and that the track listing is also still being worked on. It is obvious that the complete takes of the 'Without Love' session are featured however the first cover boasts "Rare and unreleased Studio and Live recordings" while the second cover states the rather intriguing "Coming Soon, Volume Six, 'Glimmers of Hope'".
Although the final tracklist should be announced next week, Southern Comfort have promised that the CD will feature more material from the American Sound Studios sessions, plus some very rare outtakes of 'Goin' Home' from 1968. These never-before-heard takes from the first half of the 'Goin' Home' session - with lots of laughter and clowning around - capture the sound of Elvis having fun in the studio, as he heads away from his movie contracts and towards those crucial recording sessions of 1969. So which cover would you choose? - Click here for EIN's review of 'The American Way Vol. 4; Sound of the City' - (News, Source: Southern Comfort) |

More Elvis vinyl: Due for release from Speakers Corner / RCA on 180 gram vinyl are the titles "For LP Fans Only" (October 2007), "Elvis Christmas Album" (November 2007) and "Elvis Presley Golden Records" (TBA).
Details:
For LP Fans Only - Along with "A Date With Elvis", "For LP Fans Only" is one of the most important special productions of the young King of Rock 'n' Roll. Because Elvis had been conscripted into the US Army, no new recordings could take place, and so record producers delved deep into the sound archives and dug out a few singles from his Sun Records days, mixed them with a couple of early RCA songs and a number from the "Love Me Tender" soundtrack, and, presto! a new Elvis LP was born. The overwhelming success of this album is not solely confined to the stylistic homogeneity of this collection of fresh, youthful songs. Far more, it's because for many fans the record offered the only substitution for the highly coveted but rare original singles "That's All Right," "Mystery Train" and "My Baby Left Me."
Selections:1. That's All Right;2. Lawdy, Miss Clawdy;3. Mystery Train;4. Playing For Keeps;5. Poor Boy;
6. My Baby Left Me;7. I Was The One;8. Shake, Rattle And Roll;9. I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone; 10. You're A Heartbreaker
Elvis Christmas Album - While most of the songs selected for this fourth album by Elvis Presley on RCA Records were traditional Christmas fare, such as "White Christmas" and "Silent Night," two new songs by regular suppliers of material for Presley were commissioned. One selected by Elvis to open the album, a blues-based rock and roll number "Santa Claus Is Back In Town," was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Also featured on this Christmas album are three gospel numbers along with the pop/spiritual hit "I Believe".
Selections: 1. Santa Claus Is Back In Town;2. White Christmas;3. Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane);4. I'll Be Home For Christmas;5. Blue Christmas;6. Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me);
7. O Little Town of Bethlehem;8. Silent Night;9. (There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me);10. I Believe;
11. Take My Hand, Precious Lord;12. It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)
Elvis Presley Golden Records - Welcome to "Elvis Golden Records Vol 1". This album is packed with all Elvis' early hits including such classics as "Heartbreak Hotel" (No2 UK, No.1 US '56), "Hound Dog" & "Don't Be Cruel" (No.1 US, No.2 UK, '56), "Love Me Tender" (No.1 US, No.11 UK '56), "Too Much" (No.1 US, No.6 UK '57), "All Shook Up" (No.1 US & UK '57), "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" (No.1 US, No.3 UK '57) and "Jailhouse Rock" (No.1 US & UK '58) just to name a few among many others.
Selections: 1. Hound Dog;2. Loving You;3. All Shook Up;4. Heartbreak Hotel;5. Jailhouse Rock;6. Love Me;7. Too Much;8. Don't Be Cruel;9. That's When Your Heartaches Begin;10. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear;11. Love Me Tender;12. Treat Me Nice;13. Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will Be);14. I Want You I Need You I Love You;15. My Baby Left Me;16. I Was The One;17. That's All Right;18. Baby, Let's Play House;19. Mystery Train;20. Blue Suede Shoes. (News, Source: Elusive Disc /Elvis News)
'Elvis - The Hollywood Collection Vol. 1' DVD review: In August 2007 Warners released their DVD box-set 'Elvis: The Hollywood Collection Vol. 1'. Featuring the 6 movies Charro, Girl Happy, Kissin' Cousins, Live a Little Love a Little, Stay Away Joe and Tickle Me. The six titles in this set were only on VHS until now. Charro was previously available on dvd but in very poor quality. Two of the DVD covers state that they are new digital transfers of the complete original theatrical version, however all of them are in excellent colour and sound. Having a quality version of 'Charro!' after all these years is a real pleasure. Here independent reviewer Dave Lifton from blogcritics gives a witty overview of all these Elvis features. With each movie title there is a bonus set of 4 pictures plus 1 mini movie poster. Click here for review and images.

'It's Tahoe Time' new import CD release: Coming soon from Rainbow Records is their second CD titled 'It´s Tahoe Time', containing Elvis' Oct 13th, 1974 Midnight Show at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel, Lake Tahoe. Until today there has never been a CD release of any of the 8 performances of this very little-known engagement at Lake Tahoe in autumn 1974. The CD is taken from an early generation audience recorded Cassette-Tape which has been professionally mastered. This presents one of only two known recorded performances of Elvis´ October 74 Tahoe concerts and is described as being in good and listenable sound-quality. Presented with a 16-page booklet which contains all the information about the engagement, including a special report by a female fan who saw all eight shows, written just a few days after this engagement was over. At the show Elvis was wearing his then brand new 'Mexican Sundial' jumpsuit which would only reappear in 1977. |
|
The producers suggest that this shhould be a very interesting performance for fans as Elvis is in good mood and delivers a mixture of both his early and his later classics. The concert includes classy versions of songs like 'It´s Midnight', 'Big Boss Man', 'I´m Leavin´' and an impromptu version of 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy'. As a bonus you can hear James Burton playing his guitar and giving an impression of how it sounded when he was at his very peak in 1973. The seven minute long 'Music Makers' Special has been taken from the original ´73 vinyl-album 'Guitar' and is a real rarity.
Tracklist: See See Rider, I Got A Woman/Amen, Love Me, All Shook Up, Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel, Heartbreak Hotel, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), Fever, Big Boss Man, It's Midnight, Hound Dog, Introductions, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, Why Me Lord?, I'm Leavin', Johnny B. Goode, Hawaiian Wedding Song, Can't Help Falling In Love. Bonus: Music Makers "Guitar" feat. James Burton. (Running Time: 56:00)

Elvis: That's The Way It Is (2007 DVD): Whether you are a long time Elvis fan, or just interested in the music and showmanship of the King of Entertainers, this is a nice collection! Filmed in 1970, backstage, on stage, during rehearsals and with a wealth of celebrities in attendance, these performances are from a time many consider to be at the height of Elvis’s career.
In the summer of 1970, a slim strong-voiced Elvis performed a live show for four weeks at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The result was that the world fell in love again with Elvis and his music. He gave his fans the show of a lifetime in these performances, including songs from his beginnings such as All Shook Up, and Hound Dog, all the way to his final #1 hit Suspicious Minds.
Mixed with the stage numbers are footage of rehearsals, on-stage ad libs, and moments that are simply Elvis lore. First released in theaters in 1970, this feature was re-released with special additions in 2001. |
|
The DVD is a two disc set, with an accompanying art photo booklet composed of images from the time.
Disc one is the 2001 re-release of the feature and includes Restoration Featurette Patch it Up: The Restoration of Elvis: Presley Career Highlights: Director/Restorer Filmographies and Theatrical Trailer. Running time is 96 minutes, and there are English and French subtitles available. The opening credits inform the viewer that footage that was not used in the final film of 1970’s is now available in this disc. An exciting prospect!
Disc Two is the 1970 Original Theatrical Version, and has a “Dozen Never-Seen Outtake Songs/Non musical sequences. Running time for this disc is 108 minutes with English and French subtitles available for the feature.
This feature film is still great fun. Originally, it was interesting and a novelty to see a performer of Elvis’s caliber in rehearsals and as a confident showman, and real person. Now, it is great to see how the music is still familiar, is holding up well in the 21st century, and that Elvis’s performances continue to work a kind of magic on the viewer. Not only of interest because of the performer and the music, this film is a time capsule, of styles, attitudes, pleasures and problems of the time.
Bright patterned polyester shirts, amazing Afro hair do’s and my gosh, Elvis’s incredible sideburns vie for attention along side music, and stories, jokes and unforgettable moments. Fans didn’t have internet, DVD’s or videos to watch in those days, they had feature films such as Elvis - That's the Way It Is (Two-Disc Special Edition) to bring their favorite performers to life.
Elvis - That's the Way It Is (Two-Disc Special Edition) is now available at Amazon. As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. (DVD Review: Source: dvd.monstersandcritics.com)

November 2007 FTD track listings announced plus news on distribution and release dates:
Click for track listings for 'Pot Luck with Elvis' and 'Girls! Girls! Girls!'
FTD's Roger Semon & Ernst Jorgensen have said:
Important information about distribution and release dates:
When we release new product we are bombarded with E-mails and phone calls from many of you. We do understand that, as one of our customers humorously put it, “The natives are getting restless”.
|
|
However we are one of the smallest customers with both the factory and the distribution, and whereas both companies do their best to keep the deadlines, we will always have to wait if some bigger release gets in the way. This could cost us up to a week with both situations.
Running a company with such low sales figures, we have to be cost efficient, so the service we get from the distribution is geared towards that. We do not automatically get tracking numbers, specific shipping dates for each customer. The transport companies have a 3-5 day delivery guarantee. This means we cannot tell you the exact date you get your order. We try to send to far away countries first, but we can only control it in the first stage. To upgrade these services would be quite costly.
As you have noticed the two new releases are described as “Shipping date early November”. This is a consequence of several situations:
1) We are both under enormous work pressure from our “daytime jobs”. FTD is something we do on weeknights and weekends, and in this case it means that we have not had the time to get anything ready for October 1st.
2) The vague term early November is a consequence of all of the above. It’s an illusion to guarantee specific dates with so many uncontrollable elements involved. You need to tell your customers this – if for no other reason, at least to keep your incoming phone calls and E-mails under control
At this time no decisions have been made in relation to the next releases. We hope to have something ready for January – if not definitely for February. We will be able to tell you by mid-late October. Roger & Ernst (News, Source: FECC/It's Elvs Time)

New Elvis CD in Italy: It does seem that in Italy Elvis is a better seller in newspapers stores than in record/video shops.
First all the Warner Elvis DVDs were released and soon followed by the Paramount DVDs, then the "Early Elvis" CD was released one week ago and now this new compilation....
Maybe this is the right way to make of Elvis a big seller even in this Country? (News, Source: EP Gold)
