Fans mark anniversary of Michael Jackson Death: Fans across the globe are paying tribute to singer Michael Jackson on the first anniversary of his death at the age of 50. There was an expectation that thousands of people were likely to gather at the Los Angeles cemetery where the musician is at rest, along with members of his family. Jackson's mother Katherine is expected at the family home in Gary, Indiana, where tributes will be paid. A monument has also been dedicated to the star at London's Lyric Theatre.
In New York, the Apollo Theatre - where Jackson and his brothers won a talent contest and were subsequently signed to Motown Records - there will be a commemoration of his life.
In Tokyo (right) flowers have been left in tribute to the late star, where 50 fans spent the night in an exhibition of his possessions. Jackson devotees gathering at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California said they had come to both grieve and celebrate his life.
Early this morning however only 30 fans lined up outside Forest Lawn cemetery to visit Michael Jackson's grave site on the one-year anniversary of his death. Some had been there since 3am, even though the cemetery does not open until 8 a.m.
This was a marked contrast in numbers to similar devoted fan tributes to Elvis Presley, where 50,000 fans have been known to gather at Graceland - Presley's Memphis home - to mourn the singer's passing decades after his death on August 16th 1977. Michael Jackson was previously married to Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley.
In the past year law enforcement officials have spent months focusing on how Jackson died. They removed prescription drugs and medical evidence from the rented Holmby Hills home where he died. The entertainer had a history of drug addiction -- and an early focus was that drugs played a role in his death.

The L.A. County Coroner's office found that Jackson had high levels of a propofol, a strong anaesthetic used during surgery, in his body when he died.
L.A. prosecutors charged his doctor, Conrad Murray, with giving him the drugs. Murray has denied any wrongdoing.
Jackson's children are now living with the pop star's mother, Katherine, at the family's Encino estate.

Dean Martin’s daughter: "Elvis Called My Dad ‘The King of Cool’": You know you’re a lucky kid when Elvis Presley thinks your father is the greatest thing since sliced focaccia. And that’s precisely what Dean Martin’s daughter Deana Martin came to realize one day during the swinging ’60s, as she recounts this week.
"Elvis adored Dean Martin," Deana (below, as a teen, at a recording session with Dino).
“Elvis was doing a movie at Paramount, and so was my dad. I went to visit dad at the studio and we were standing outside [dad's] dressing room. And in those days, you rode around the studio on bicycles,” Deana - who like her legendary father, is a big-band crooner.
“And Elvis Presley comes riding up on his bicycle. And he gets off the bike when he sees my dad… And he says hi to my father. And dad introduces me,” continues Deana, whose new CD is titled Volare.
“He says, ‘Deana, this is Elvis Presley. And, Elvis, this is my daughter Deana.’
“And Elvis leans down to me and says, ‘Deana, they call me the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. But your dad is the King of Cool.’
“And I thought, Oh my gosh. It must be true. Elvis Presley said so!”

Later in the show, Deana chats about hanging out with her dad in Las Vegas during his Rat Pack days, when Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. would join them after and sometimes during Dino’s performances.
“They’d walk out into the casino and deal. My dad would take over for one of the blackjack dealers. And he would deal.
“And people would come up to the table and go, ‘Are you Dean Martin?’
“And he’d go, ‘Nope. I’m the dealer.’”

Graceland Goes Red, White and Blue for the US Soccer Team: Graceland showed its support of the U.S. National Soccer Team when the mansion was illuminated in red, white and blue. The lights were switched on by Memphis area youth, ranging from ages 8 to 12 years old, who play in the Mid South Futbol Club.
The patriotic colors will stay lit through the July 4th holiday in honor of the United States National Soccer Team and their success in World Cup competition. The United States National Soccer Team plays Ghana on Saturday in Rustenburg, South Africa, for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Lodewijk Rijff - Elvis fan and author - 1944-2010: On June 10, Dutch journalist and fan since the early days Lodewijk Rijff, passed away after a short fight with cancer. He was only 65 years of age.
From the early 70s till the 90s he wrote countless Elvis stories for the Dutch music press and was editor for Muziek Parade, PopBiz and Veronica weekly.
Among the Dutch fans he will be remembered best for his book "Elvis, De Biografie van een Fenomeen", published in 1977.

Elvis Presley's Graceland to get look-a-like in Denmark: Builders in Denmark laid the first brick Tuesday of a copy of Elvis Presley's famous estate Graceland, to open next year as part of a museum devoted to the "King" of rock'n roll, organizers said.
More than 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) from Elvis's estate in Memphis, Tennessee, the Danish Graceland is being built in the small western town of Randers, as a star addition to the town's prized Elvis museum.
"This exact copy of Graceland will include some 6,000 original possessions of the King like clothing, boots, guitars, letters, contracts and other diverse objects," museum director Henrik Knudsen, 46, told AFP.
When Randers' original Elvis museum opened 15 years ago it was "the only permanent museum on the King outside the United States," said Knudsen, who says he "became an Elvis fan at the age of eight after hearing 'Burning Love'."
It now receives around 25,000 visitors a year.

The Graceland look-a-like will display "thousands of Elvis artifacts currently on show at the museum in town, in addition to a large number of other items that are being stored in the cellar due to lack of space," Knudsen said.
It will also feature a shop, a restaurant and a cinema screening films about Elvis on a loop.
Set to open in April next year, it will be financed by three private investors and a local bank and is expected to cost a total of 26 million kroner (€3.5 million, $4.3 million).
Knudsen, who also operates musical-themed tours, said he was sure the Graceland museum would be a success and that one British tour operator was ready to bring around 10,000 tourists each year to the pilgrimage site.
The town's tourist office expects the Danish Graceland to attract between 75,000 and 125,000 visitors each year, mainly from Europe.

Elvis History to Repeat Itself at the Las Vegas Hilton: There is a new ELVIS show in Las Vegas, The 'Heart of the King' Elvis Fans' Festival, Convention, Contest and Concert at the Las Vegas Hilton. The property is arguably one of the most historic locations in the career of Elvis Presley. This event is in celebration of the anniversary of Elvis' Las Vegas performances as well as the 75th Birthday Year of the Greatest Entertainer of All Time. Forty years ago, Elvis' performances at the Hilton were the subject of the documentary film and live album "Elvis, That's The Way It Is." One of the highlights of the festival will be to celebrate those historic performances portrayed in the documentary in a concert titled 'That's The Way It Was' on July 17th. The show will include much of Elvis' original cast, such as Elvis' Imperials, the Sweet Inspirations, comedian Sammy Shore and many more along with special guest, Elvis' drummer and Rock N Roll Hall of Famer DJ Fontana. Elvis' closest friend Joe Esposito, will host the events. The concert will feature Shawn Klush (right), Graceland's Official Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist and the BBC's 'World's Greatest Elvis' in the same room Elvis made history.

Graceland Announces more plans for Elvis Week 2010: EPE have announced new Elvis Week events that include the finals for the international Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, a special screening of “Elvis on Tour” featuring a newly-remastered version of the award-winning concert documentary, fan club events, charity fundraisers, celebrity guests and more.
Elvis Week 2010 will feature several new special events and concerts, including a screening experience of the newly-restored and remastered Blu-ray and DVD versions of “Elvis on Tour” from Warner Bros. (see more below) This exclusive event on Saturday, August 14, will feature a screening of the 1972 Golden Globe Best Documentary winner and a specially-produced, retrospective from Priscilla Presley. In addition, the premiere event at The Orpheum Theatre will also include raw, never-before-seen Elvis tour footage from the Warner Bros. vault as well as montage sequences produced by Academy Award-winner Martin Scorsese, special celebrity guests and a short concert by backup singers who performed in “Elvis on Tour” as part of J.D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet.
The highly-popular and entertaining Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest will be held again this year with competitors from around the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan. |

A new element to the contest this year includes a semifinal round position that will be filled by a tribute artist selected by fans in an online vote at ElvisWeek.com. Individuals can vote for the Elvis tribute artist that they would like to see compete during the semifinal round of the contest on Thursday, August 12, at The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. The top ten semifinalists on Thursday will then move on to compete for the top spot of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2010 on Friday, August 13, during the final round of the competition.

"Conversations on Elvis", one of the most popular Elvis Week events, returns this year on Saturday, August 14 with two different sessions featuring many of Elvis’ friends and associates who worked with him during his career. Joining host Tom Brown of Turner Classic Movies for session one at 10:00am will be Donnie Sumner and Bill Baize, backup singers who performed as part of J.D. Sumner & and the Stamps Quartet in “Elvis on Tour,” along with Joe Guercio, Elvis’ musical director and conductor from 1970-77. During session two at 1:00pm Michael Lollar Commercial Appeal writer and contributing author for the new book “Elvis Presley’s Memphis,” will be on hand to take guests behind-the-scenes and share what he discovered when researching for the book. Joining Michael will be longtime Memphis supporter and former mayor Bill Morris and Elvis' friend Joe Esposito to share stories about their experiences with Elvis and his love for the city of Memphis.

Plus two new outdoor concert events. On Sunday, August 15 at 9:00 a.m., fans will enjoy a celebration of the gospel music Elvis loved during the Classic Sunday Morning Gospel Music Singin’. Bill Baize, Larry Strickland, Ed Hill and Donnie Sumner, who performed on stage with Elvis as part of J.D. Sumner & The Stamps Quartet, will perform many of the gospel hits Elvis loved. Also performing that morning will be gospel group Soul City from First Assembly of God, Memphis, which was Elvis’ home church for many years.
Then, on Monday, August 16 at 9:00 a.m., the Elvis Week Finale Celebration Concert will be the perfect way to end an amazing Elvis Week when Jamie Aaron Kelley, along with Brad Birkedahl and Joe Fick, formerly with The Dempsey’s, will perform Elvis’ hits in their unique style. Another Elvis fan favorite, Terry Mike Jeffrey, will also be on hand to perform his favorite Elvis music.

Singer Jimmy Dean dies, aged 81; Jimmy Dean the american singer and actor best known for his hit 'Big Bad John' has died aged 81.
Dean composed the song as a dramatic monologue, the heroic story of a coal miner who "stood six foot six and weighed two forty-five" and held up a collapsing roof until his fellows had escaped, but could not save himself. Hammer-rings punctuate the recording, which ends with the epitaph: "At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man – Big Bad John."
In an interesting coincidence in the UK charts 'Big Bad John' was only just held off the top spot by Elvis' 'His Latest Flame'. In the US, however, it reached No 1 on both country and pop charts, receiving a Grammy award as best country and western recording.
Dean was raised in what he called dirt-poor surroundings in the small west Texas town of Seth Ward, near Plainview. After leaving the armed forces in 1948, Dean began to make his name as a country singer around Washington DC, then a nexus of country music activity, thanks in part to the promoter Connie B Gay. In 1953 he had a regional hit with Bummin' Around, for the independent label 4 Star.

Dean than secured a spot on radio at WARL in Arlington, Virginia, then, from 1960, on television, hosted the show Town & Country Jamboree, which was quite widely syndicated. In 1956 Elvis Presley appeared on his TV show and Jimmy humorously recounted what a hard time he had getting anything out of Elvis other than a 'yep' or a 'nope'.
He noted it went as follows,
Jimmy Dean: So, you're gonna be on the S.S. Mt. Vernon tonight, are you, Elvis?
Elvis: Yep.
Jimmy: Have you ever worked on a boat before?
Elvis: Nope.
Jimmy: I imagine you're looking forward to this, aren't you?
Elvis: Yep.
And that was it. "Yep, nope... " and that was all he would say.
Dean stated that years later Elvis apologised profusely for leaving me hanging on that interview, telling Dean that "Elvis said that hHe was so sorry about that - but I was scared to death".
Dean noted that, "It's hard to believe that Elvis could be shy or afraid of anything, but I guess even 'The King' had those days in the beginning."
In the late 1960s, Dean entered the meat business, which he knew well – his family had been in the trade. In the early Nineties, his fortune was estimated at $75 million (£50m). Having watched other stars lose their fortunes, Dean said he had learned to be careful with his money. "I've seen so many people in this business that made a fortune," he said. "They get old and broke and can't make any money. I tell you something … no-one's going to play a benefit for Jimmy Dean."
In February, he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was to have been inducted in October.
Dean is survived by his wife, Donna, three children and two grandchildren.

'How Great Thou Art' new Classic Album FTD Out Now: Ernst Jorgensen has told Elvis Unlimited that the new FTD release will be shipped out last week when FTD releases its deluxe edition of Elvis’ GRAMMY AWARD winning album 'How Great Thou Art'.
Originally released in 1967 it was Elvis' second Gospel album. The original album featured a collection of thirteen sacred songs including the hit single "Crying In The Chapel".

Melissa Etheridge Performs with the Cast of Million Dollar Quartet: Melissa Etheridge joined the cast of Million Dollar Quartet for a quick performance recently and did an incredible Elvis tribute.
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, a new musical inspired by the actual event, is currently in previews at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre with an official opening on Sunday, April 11.The cast includes Eddie Clendening (Elvis Presley), Lance Guest (Johnny Cash), Levi Kreis (Jerry Lee Lewis), Robert Britton Lyons (Carl Perkins), Hunter Foster (Sam Phillips) and Elizabeth Stanley (Dyanne).
On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock and Roll,” who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

'Never Ending Demand' Import CD Out Now: Rainbow Records have now released their new CD set (two separate cds) called “Never-Ending Demand” Vol.1 + Vol.2, featuring the complete performances of February 16, 1977 Montgomery, AL (Vol. 1) and February 17, 1977 Savannah, GA (Vol. 2).
From the press release: The newspaper headlines titled it "Emperor Elvis Still Has It: Memphis Music. Vegas Touch" and "Elvis Wows 'Em" – can you ask for more? The Montgomery performance has never been released in its entirety until this day. Only a handful of songs were released in 1999 on the CD "Coming On Strong" featuring the rare performance of "Where No One Stands Alone". For the new Rainbow Records release (Vol. 1) the producers obtained a first generation tape that has never circulated before and unlike all other audience recordings from this date features "My Way" as an uncut, complete version and includes the complete Opening Act by the Stamps Quartet. The quality of the audience recording is very clear and even the fans that usually avoid audience recordings should give this CD a try – they won’t be disappointed. The booklet features also a review by the person who taped the show plus some interesting and official paperwork from the tour itself.

Snoop Dog Visits Viva ELVIS: Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis at Aria in MGM’s CityCenter has become the must-see for celebrities on Las Vegas trips, including non other than Snoop Dogg, who saw the show on June 21 with his daughter. Snoop took her to the show for her birthday, and they loved it! Not only were they waving the Elvis flags that they caught during the finale but Snoop and his daughter posed with the cast after the show.
After the show, the family went backstage where Snoop was greeted with shouts and cheers. He posed for photos and then his daughter joined the group. The cast and Snoop sang Happy Birthday to her.
Snoop praised the cast, saying this was the best show he’s ever seen and "Jailhouse Rock" was his favorite song. On his way out, he was heard saying “Man, this was a defining moment in Snoop history!”
"You ain't nothin' but a Hound Dizzle" says the Snoop.

Everything about the new Cirque du Soleil show is Rock Concert, capital R capital C. It's Viva ELVIS, after all, and it required a sound design that is a departure for the prolific French-Canadian troupe and Sin City mainstay.
The goal is a fusion of dance, acrobatics and Live Music (also capital L, capital M). The sound took on new importance because it needed to be a major piece of a suitable tribute for the star who was not only (arguably) the King of Rock ‘n' Roll but (arguably) Las Vegas' King. |

The creative team of Cirque once again turned to sound designer Jonathan Deans. His credits include Fosse, Ragtime, EFX and Parade, to name a few, and he's currently at work on Bono and The Edge's Spider-Man show on Broadway.
Cirque built the 1,840-seat theater, and it is certainly not "in the round" like most of their shows. Its proscenium measures 80 feet wide by 50 feet tall and holds 176 audio speakers with 36 subwoofers, 20 of which are buried in the floor. It boasts the largest single-ring, fiber-optic audio transport system in the world. The video system includes four front projectors and two overhead projectors plus a 30-foot-by-40-foot LED wall that can split into eight separate columns. It's all intricately fused to support new arrangements of old songs that aim to inspire new fans as well as satisfy old.
"Viva ELVIS is more of a concert," Deans explains. "The musicians are on stage 80 percent of the time, and the main focus 50 percent of the time. They have an onstage presence, which is a fantastic thing."
A Different World
The creatives got the rights to bring Mr. Presley "back" to Vegas and were immediately faced with a quandary: How do you take on something that is larger than life?
Thirty of Elvis' songs are used in the production, and like the Cirque's previous big splash, the Beatles-themed Love, there are remixes designed to accentuate and boost the emotional charge of his original performances. Elvis' voice is the only male singing voice in the show, joined occasionally by live female singers and the band.
Armand Thomas, director of creation, has been with Cirque since 1996, though this was his first show as a creator. "We didn't want to repeat, that's for sure," he says. "So we started off looking at the theater itself, and steered away from it being in the round like Love." They also wanted to distant themselves from the use of characters within a song.
But like Love, the music came first: "The traditional Cirque way is to create an act, then fill in the song. But with these big iconic songs, we did the reverse."
The show is presented in quasi-chorological order, starting off with the early days and ending in (appropriately) his Vegas years. There's no envy in picking what songs made it in the show, though: "In the Elvis collection there are at least 750 songs, and you can easily toss out 600," Thomas says. "But that initial list we came up with had 100 songs, then we kept whittling it down." Coming up with the final selection, even when some songs were not performed in their original length, was daunting.
They wanted Elvis's actual voice as much as possible, which proved challenging. "We wanted to extract his voice and put it in a new arrangement that would be completed by live musicians. Sometimes we bit the bullet and decided that a recording made with one mic in the middle of a room in Tennessee recorded decades ago was too tough to clean up."
Thomas adds a personal thrill: The creative team got to travel to the famed Iron Mountain vault in Pennsylvania and hear the original masters. "We spent three days listening to all the songs we were considering, and sometimes there were up to 25 takes," he says. "It was fun listening to the banter between the songs." Technically, however, it was an audio engineering nightmare: Those tapes were in four or five different formats.
For Deans, Cirque's permanent theaters and its big top are two quite different worlds when it comes to sound design. "There are different technical demands, but as far as the texture and the layering of the music and sound are concerned, it's the same," he says. "My work is to create a unique environment for every production. And whatever the environment is, I need to make sure that sonically the audience members know they are entering a different world."
Not Bigger...Grander
Deans has done 13 Cirque shows, seven in Vegas. "I'm very honored by Cirque for getting to do so many," he says. "If I can be so bold, I've grown with the company." His work took on special meaning for this one. His previous work, Love placed extra importance on the music, but there was no live band.
"After doing Love, I too wanted to reinvent myself and not copy my own design," he says. Three years were spent on building the theater and the production. "The concept was to create a concert sound system, with left/right concert speakers, and then split clusters over the proscenium arch that allowed for us to pull [audio] focus left or right as needed."
A surround system was built into the theater that is especially responsive. He's able to switch off the FOH main speakers and have sound coming just out of the side that's powerful enough to go well past ambient and into something that can broaden the field of music. "Here we have a big production, so I tried to make it wider, yet keep focus in the audio sense. I'm not talking just bigger dynamics, but grander."
With so much experience working with the creative team, there was little guesswork. "I knew what I wanted to do, and am fortunate enough to have the experience to know how it would turn out." One bit of boldness that required some experimentation was the decision to bury 20 subwoofers in the floor under the orchestra level. "There was no way one could forecast how that would work, but I had a hunch of what it would mean," he says. "I'm pleased to say that with Elvis' music having updated arrangements created by Erich [Van Tourneau, musical director/arranger], the extra power that the subwoofers provide really create a unique concert experience. It's a concert experience without hammering people, but they do feel the theater move."
The subwoofers used are passive with no processing, and since they were literally being buried and nearly impossible to get too, they had to be maintenance-free. He chose Danley Sound TH-115TH to give the buried treasure treatment to, and says they work extremely well.
The rest of the speakers are all Meyer, Deans' speaker of choice. "When you take the product out of the box, they always work. When you take two of the same products out, they work exactly alike. That's important, because I hang speakers in ridiculous positions, and want to move sound around a lot, so they must always have the same voice."
Even in the CAD stages, he says when he's placing speakers, virtually walking around the 3D version of the auditorium, he can hear with great accuracy in his head exactly what Meyer speakers will be delivering for him.
"The board is LCS (Level Control Systems), which has recently been acquired by Meyer," Deans says. "It's a board that Cirque has used for 20 years, and it's a mixing board that never tells the designer ‘no.' There are no limits." He provides the analogy of sound traveling like a driver from New Jersey to Manhattan. The driver must go through the dark, narrow confines of the Lincoln tunnel before emerging again in the light. "With LCS, there is no tunnel."
All the musicians are wireless, of course, and the team went with Sennheiser to supply the system. Deans notes that because of the white space nightmare that we all now live in, combined with the interference complexity of CityCenter where the theater is housed, they were restricted, and making sure the gear and the PMs are working properly is a nightly challenge. "This is not the fault of Sennheiser, but a problem with the CityCenter," he states emphatically. "But the sound team is fantastic, and they pull the show out of the bag 10 shows a week. I'm incredibly proud and tip my hat to Kevin Owens [head of sound] and Aaron Beck [sound project manager] and the rest of the operations crew."
Otherwise, he says he's in awe of the sound source: the musicians. A highlight for him is the "Burning Love" number. "All the musicians are spread across downstage, and while there are movie clips playing above, it's really just about the band. They are playing with this tremendous energy, and it's just fantastic. The percussionist is right on the edge, practically in the front row, and the musicianship is astounding."
The sound/video/communications consultant was Auerbach Pollock Friedlander's Matthew Ezold, CTS. Solotech served as installation company, with Bob Barbagallo and Mario St-Onge playing key roles. The associate sound designer was Jason Rauhoff. The sound operations crew includes Dave Robertson, Whitney Day, John Kessler, Jason Bauer and Ezra Fowler.

Ed Leek had died: Elvis' Memphis school friend Ed Leek has died. According to friend Maurice Colgan, Ed Leek had been valiantly fighting cancer for two years but recently was feeling more positive and cheerful.
Back in July 1953 Elvis cut his first acetate combining "My Happiness" with "That's When Your Heartaches Begin". Elvis was very excited by his new record and after playing to his parents he then played it to his school friend Ed Leek with whom it remained until its `rediscovery' in 1988. It was licensed by RCA for inclusion in its new fifties box-set.
In a recent Humes High Class of 1953 interview Ed Leek explained..
"I gave Elvis $4.00 to make his first Dub at Sam Phillip's Sun Records. It took him two months to get up the courage to do it. Elvis was very unsure of himself in the early days of his career. I had a good time traveling, double dating, etc. with him until he went into the Army. He would call me to 'round up' the bunch opf about 16 of us in total to come to where ever he was performing. He was afraid there wouldn't be anyone there if we didn't come.
He is still the only singer I listen to. I own the original Acetate along with the music rights to it. I have allowed RCA and Disney to publish the music so the fans can hear the two songs, which I feel are very good. The record has all the elements that later developed into his personal style. I also have the first commercial disk out of the labeling machine at Plastic Products on Chelsea Ave. ('That's All Right' and 'Blue Moon'), which Elvis signed for me. I have always enjoyed my souvenirs, along with my Elvis memories."

'Elvis On Tour' DVD + BluRay releases: According to the pre-order information on the EPE website the new version of 'Elvis On Tour' DVD is Region 1 (U.S.A. and Canada Only) whereas the Blu-Ray Edition is Region Free.
EIN has been told an Australian (Region 4) DVD will be released after the US version. Warners have mentioned a delayed October release in Australia. This is to be confirmed, although an earlier Sydney 'On Tour' special cinema event and promotion for July was cancelled by Warners.

Elvis' love life told tenderly - 'Baby, Let's Play House' tells of Elvis Presley's passion, heartbreak (Book Review): In the hands of a lesser writer, a book about Elvis Presley's love life might have been an unmitigated, vulgar disaster. In the well-informed, creative hands of author Alanna Nash, we are thankfully given a journey that informs us as much about ourselves as it does about Elvis and his love life.
Let's be honest, Elvis was all about sex from the start: It was the repressed sexuality of the '50s that seemed to melt in heat waves emanating from his swiveling hips, the innocent screaming teen desire that surrounded him onstage and the housewife whose drudgery was relieved if but for a moment by fantasies of this unusual new artist with the bedroom eyes. |

Nash pulls from this heated miasma a frank and fascinating portrait of an essentially lonely man. That she does so with grace and intelligence instead of tabloid vulgarity speaks both of her respect for the material and her own talents as an artist: When I read her phrase " ... the cantilevered poetry of Elvis's swiveling midsection ... " I knew I was in good hands. That description, like the book itself, is the work of a master.
Author Nash is wise to assume that the reader comes to the Elvis story fresh. Readers who are unfamiliar with all but the most basic Elvis narrative will find the Elvis story told from birth, but in a manner likely not used before: from the point of view of the women, as presaged by the book's subtitle.
There are dozens of stories -- both sweet and lurid -- to enthrall anyone with a fascination of the depths of stardom only achieved by a very few, among them Elvis Aaron Presley. From his youth to his tragic death, from lean, loose-hipped newcomer to thick, aging superstar, women adored this honey-voiced Southerner and the aura of sex that surrounded him.
There is no little amount of space spent trying to "explain" Elvis and his interactions with women -- including his mother. That seemed almost unnecessary to me. The stories and their telling are fascinating enough to need no deeper exploration; readers will draw their own conclusions, anyway. What Nash does is remind the reader that Elvis was influential, talented, and -- above all -- human. After decades of hearing Fat Elvis jokes, one cannot help feeling a tinge of guilt when shown the depth of Elvis's talent, his generosity and his warmth, and reminded that the manner of his death was truly heartbreaking. The women in his life -- loyal to a fault -- still remember him with great passion, as if each felt she was the love of his life. New bid expected for CKX/EPE: Music industry titan Irving Azoff has decided to back Allen Shapiro's fight to buy "American Idol" franchise owner CKX Inc. Azoff, while not putting up any money immediately, is ready to pony up as much as $200 million for a minority stake in the company -- between 25 percent and 33 percent -- should the Shapiro-fronted bid prevail, sources said.
Shapiro's bid is backed by JPMorgan Chase's private-equity arm, One Equity Partners. The group has bid $550 million to $560 million. It is battling a group headed by Simon Fuller, who helped expand the "American Idol" franchise in its early years and later sold his company, 19 Entertainment, to CKX in 2005 for $300 million.
Fuller, who created the Spice Girls and is still an advisor to CKX, has made a $600 million bid, according to reports. Both Fuller and Shapiro are in the hunt for the publicly listed company, which is valued at around $460 million. In addition to Idol, CKX owns rights to Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali.
Azoff wants a "deal for exploiting the management of the [American Idol] acts and the tour," said a source familiar with the situation. The 62-year-old executive chairman of Live Nation, which is promoting the Glee tour, feels he could be valuable in helping to market future Idol tours, the source said. A representative for Azoff had no comment. Shapiro and Greg O'Hara, who runs One Equity Partners, have been in New York this week for meetings with CKX to outline their offer, which would involve Shapiro moving in as CEO of CKX, sources said.
Shapiro also runs the TV Guide channel and helped facilitate a leveraged buyout of Dick Clark Productions.
Fuller is in partnership with former Barclays Capital executive Roger Jenkins. One wrinkle in the proceedings is former CKX CEO Robert Sillerman -- who exited the company unexpectedly a few weeks ago. Some say Shapiro had a hand in forcing out Sillerman -- who had been working with One Equity Partners in its bid.
Sillerman, 60, described as a "wounded bear," has a 20 percent stake in CKX. He was replaced by CEO Michael Ferrel. Both bidders would also have to convince other CKX shareholders, including Presley family members, of the benefits of their bid. A spokesman for CKX had no comment.
Another source close to proceedings said he would bet on a Shapiro win. "They don't have all the sturm and drang that the others have," said this financial executive. The strength of the bids imply that the Fox hit "American Idol" still has plenty of life left even as the latest finale ratings were down compared to previous years, and key judge Simon Cowell is leaving. Cowell's departure has prompted a torrent of speculation about who might replace him. Bret Michaels, the rock singer and the winner of "Celebrity Apprentice 3," is among names that have surfaced in the press.
Idol remains the top-rated show on TV helping Fox to win its sixth-straight season in the key advertiser demo of 18-49 year olds. This year's finale was watched by 24.2 million viewers. (Sale of EPE, Source: Elvis Matters)

'A Tribute to Elvis' Michael Jarrett CD Review: Michael Jarrett, a key performer in the "Original Elvis Tribute Show " show that recently rock'n'rolled through Europe, has recently released a CD of not only his compositions but also other songs as a "Tribute To Elvis."
Jarrett was part of the band ‘Kenny Brewer and The Volcanoes’ as far back as 1959 and spent time on tour with Jerry Lee Lewis so he has certainly done his time on-the-road and with the musical greats. Hearing sixties musicians bringings the true heart and soul to their own songs often adds a new heart-breaking emotion that can carries the listener to another level.

'Tupelo Elvis Festival' - this weekend: The international festival in honour of Elvis Presley, Tupelo, Mississippi's native son, The Tupelo Elvis Festival is on this weekend June 3-6, 2010. The Tupelo Festival started in 1999 and includes an Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest Preliminary Round as part of the event. Elvis fans are going to be thrilled as the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Ultimate ETA contest winners will return to the Lyric in Downtown Tupelo for this year's show. Bill Cherry, Brandon Bennett and Shawn Klush will all be performing along with the EAS Band. EIN rather liked the review of Alanna Nash's controversial book, 'Baby, Let's Play House' that includes,, "Good books about Elvis are hard to find... Occasionally though something turns up and proves itself worthy of some serious attention. In my view, 'Baby, Let's Play House' is one of them. ..This is serious attempt to review an aspect of Elvis' life which, hitherto, has been dealt with superficially (often pruriently by lesser writers) and with little attempt to explain beyond the obvious: that Elvis was an enormously talented and charismatic Lothario who could pull most chicks with a flutter of his sexy eyes. Self evidently, there was more to his sexuality and relationships with the opposite sex than this.... "

"The original master of 'Rags To Riches' is Take 4 with a vocal repair on "cuss me" (changed to "kiss me"), spliced with the line "tell me you're mine ever more" from Take 3, along with a piano 'intro' overdub. For the release of 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes' ('70s box) they used just the repaired Take 4, without the line from Take 3. Curiously it is also missing some backing vocal overdubs and the piano. For the new remaster they have created a completely new splice. Again it's mainly Take 4, but they have now used a splice from "...that I'm living for, hold me and kiss me, and tell me you're mine ever more" from Take 3. I hate to admit it, but it actually sounds better this way!"

'The Elvis Files Vol. 3' Book Review: 'The Elvis Files Vol. 3' 1960 – 1964 contains over 1200 stunning photos in its 470 pages and all in quality printing. It includes all ELVIS events in "1960 to 1964", Every Working Moment, over 200 newly discovered photos, multiple interviews, the Hawaii and Memphis 1961 Shows with Rare Pictures and all the movies from G.I. Blues up to 1964 are covered in great detail.
There is no doubt that this is a labour of love for Norwegian Erik Lorentzen, author and long time Elvis fan, who has found a ton of images and information never before published.
But it isn't a cheap book and many fans want to know what it really includes and what format it takes.

Bardwell did an excellent bluesy re-interpretation of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ that gave the concert extra dept”, while Frantic Franky of the Dutch rootsmusic webzine ‘Boppin’ Around’ noted that the show is, “An excellent Elvis night with more than its fair share of rock ‘n’ roll. Not one second of pathetic imitations, and that’s the way it should be”.

Sweets Inspirations looking for temporary replacement for Myrna: According to Elvis Matters it looks as if the Sweet Inspirations will continue to tour, even though Myrna is forced to take a break. Estelle Brown and Portia Griffin are trying to get another person to work in her place. Myrna is doing well, although she says the kidney treatments are really draining. She does take them three times a week at three hours per session. Hang in there Myrna, we're thinking of you!

Dennis Hopper, 74, deals his final card: Dennis Hopper, whose portrayals of drug-addled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films “Easy Rider,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Blue Velvet” drew on his early out-of-control experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, died last Saturday May 29 at his home in Venice, California. He was 74.
Dennis Hopper first won praise in Hollywood as a teenager in 1955 for his portrayal of an epileptic on the NBC series “Medic” and for a small part in the James Dean film “Rebel Without a Cause.” He confirmed his status as a rising star the next year, as the son of a wealthy rancher played by Rock Hudson in “Giant,” the epic western also starring Elizabeth Taylor and Dean.
Soon Hopper was traveling in social circles with James Dean and, like Elvis, he also had a romantic liason with Natalie Wood. (see photo below)
Dennis Hopper married five times including one of eight days in 1970 to the singer Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. He is survived by four children.
On March 26, surrounded by friends like Jack Nicholson and director David Lynch, Hopper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Looking frail, he began his brief acceptance speech by sardonically thanking the paparazzi for supposedly distracting him and causing him to lose his balance and fall the day before. He continued, “Everyone here today that I’ve invited — and obviously some that I haven’t invited — have enriched my life tremendously.”

In 1994 Dennis Hopper spoke on the BBC about his time knowing Elvis.
Dennis Hopper: Elvis came and knocked on my door ... He was the biggest star in the country and I was living in a duplex apartment, and he came and knocked on the door and I opened the door and there was standing Elvis Presley, and he introduced himself and I said, "I know who you are".
Elvis said, "I hate to bother you like this, but ... er ... you knew James Dean and I'm really interested in what James Dean was like. May I come in?"
I said "Sure, come in." So we spent a couple of weeks together. He wanted to see where he lived, he wanted to see various places... I showed him around Hollywood and this is before he had all of his cousins with him, all of his bodyguards - the big entourage. We got to know each other pretty well for the two weeks. He was a very sweet and innocent, naive kind of guy.
Elvis was nice. He was a tremendous star at the time. He was a big, big star. He was making a million dollars for 'Love Me Tender', which nobody made.
... at the time.. he was very, very naive. But it's unfortunate, I think he could have been a really wonderful actor if he hadn't of... I don't know, he got involved in this singing-actor number and did these strange little movies which made a lot of money, but I think that if Elvis had ever done a serious role and been directed properly... he could have been quite marvellous.

Elvis third on the Rolling Stone "500 Greatest Songs" List: The latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine presents the 2010 list for the "500 Greatest Songs of All-Time" – an updated edition of a list that came out back in 2004.
This year Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone' was the #1 song of all-time.
No surprise that The Beatles were top with 23 as the most songs on the list, The Rolling Stones second with 17 songs. Our man ELVIS was third with 11 songs - not bad for a perfomer who died 32 years ago!
Fans must remember that Rolling Stone magazine started in 1967 well after Elvis' most creative period.
The surprise is that The Beatles only just scraped in to the Top Ten with 'Hey Jude' at #8!
Elvis' top song was 'Hound Dog' at #19.

'Elvis Presley In Concert' returns for 2011 Tour: The Stig Edgren Events website shows that the 'Elvis In Concert' video screen show will keep touring again next year. The producer of the shows indicates that the tour will hit the road again in the fall of 2011.
‘Elvis Presley In Concert‘ will hit international shores again in 2011. Further details and 2011 dates are not posted as yet. The major concert series with the TCB Band has recently complete a tour of Europe.

'Our Memories Of Elvis Vol.1 & 2' new import release: Revisiting the 'Our memories of Elvis' albums (a.k.a. 'More of the pure Elvis sounds') from 32 years ago, we came to realize that Joan Deary did have a vision well ahead of time. Nowadays we're craving for recordings like this.
Unfortunately, at the time most fans didn't understand the concept of these two albums. These weren't ever intended to be 'undubbed recordings'. Both 'Our Memories Of Elvis' and 'Our Memories Of Elvis - volume 2' are mainly the masters which were completely remixed and edited. Most overdubbed recordings and in a few cases also parts that were recorded at the original sessions were left out of the mix to get more out of Elvis' voice. Obviously, in some instances this left gaps in the sound, so the engineer had to remix it! With these releases, Joan Deary showed that her musical vision was right… Most songs sound much better in their stripped form.
The main reason for this project was that there were many requests at the time from fans complaining about the fact that Elvis' voice was buried under the many instruments and backings. 'Can we have a more pure Elvis…' - well, that's what they got in 1979. |

Purists complained that it is tampering with 'original' recordings. (Would it have been okay if it had been done a few years earlier?). Many forget the purpose of making music… In order to survive as an artist, you need to go along with your time and the music will stay in the mainstream. Elvis is an artist who, if treated well, will survive the new eras also.
This release is a must-have and a rare one at the same time. SONY-BMG/ FTD decided that this is not an essential release, simply because it was done in 1979. They focus on the masters "as is", and the undubbed takes. This leaves out these essential remixes, which are not done anymore with the multi-track recordings. Only minor adjustments are being made these days, without the intention to redo the old job for a new / more up-to-date version of a song. Many lesser-known artists have re-releases with updated sound, why not Elvis, the King of Music himself!
We seriously remastered these two albums in detail from newly discovered Joan Deary reference tapes which included an unreleased track, "It's easy for you", which was cut out of the Volume 2 because of the total running time - likely because of the long jam "Don't Think Twice It's All Right."
The song selection is well-chosen within his concept. The slightly longer silences between the songs give you comfortable time to get into the next song.
The words that can describe this release are breath-taking, magical, intimate, perfect … PURE ELVIS. Brilliantly remastered and incomparable to any other previous release! This new release is perfect introduction to a more personal encounter with Elvis. |
