Welcome to the "Elvis Information Network", home to the best news, reviews, interviews, Elvis photos & in-depth articles about the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Aaron Presley...
The latest on www.elvisinfonet.com:
Two New FTD Books: FTD have planned two new Flaming Star book co-productions.
- 'The Best of the British - The HMV Years 1956-1958' written by Trevor Simpson. This is the story of EVERY song by Elvis released on the British HMV label. It is an eclectic mix of graphic illustrations of the labels, the charts and rare memorabilia through 1956 - 1958.
Thorough research of each song and songwriter has taken many years and provides the definitive history of the music that shook the world, sensationally revealing many previously unknown facts and British connections to Elvis and his music.
The book contains over 1000 rare and unpublished photographs, the illustrations connected to the songs, the recordings and the promotion of Elvis by HMV in Britain.
Included, and officially gathered together for the FIRST TIME on two exclusive CDs, is every Elvis track released by HMV. Most of these are, of course, the fifties master takes but also added to these are bonus songwriter demos and Elvis outtakes, including some of the 'Love Me Tender' Stereo versions. These help complete the audio story upon which the foundation of the global popular music culture and industry was built.
This is Elvis and the story of the impact of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Great Britain.

Book Review: From the Holy Land to Graceland (Gary Vikan): It is always refreshing to read a book about Elvis which considers his importance beyond just his music and considers him from a wider socio-cultural, political and/or religious perspective. As its title suggests, From the Holy Land to Graceland by respected academic researcher and author, Dr. Gary Vikan, is one such book.
So does the argument that we should view Elvis as a contemporary, secular saint have validity? Nigel Patterson takes us deep inside From the Holy Land to Graceland to discover the answer. .....Read the full review

"Celebrating Elvis" 2013 at GRAMMY Museum: On what would have been Elvis' 78th birthday, The GRAMMY Museum in LA presented a special discussion focusing on the "King of Rock-n-Roll." Guests got a unique view into the inner-workings of Elvis courtesy of two key people who worked closely with him: Mike Stoller and Jerry Schilling. Elvis' creative and musical side was talked about by Mike Stoller, while the more private, personal side of Elvis was discussed by Jerry Schilling. After the discussion there were audience questions. The event was a great success.
In the audience this year were the ever-sprightly Wink Martindale and his wife Sandy.

Elvis Movie/Publicity Photo Shoots: A new website focussing on Publicity photo-shoots and the use of alternate versions. -- Some half a year ago we started a little project with a friend - the idea behind it was to collect as much of the "movie/publicity photo shoot" photos together as possible to give new (and old) fans a better idea of the actual sessions; although it often seems that out of these 'official' Elvis photos it's always the same ones they use on LPs/EPs/CDs/books/mags etc., but that's not necessarily always the case - there are thousands of these photos around and although many are very similar, slightly different shots go to show that some thought went into picking them. It may not be a big deal to some, but Elvis fans are often keen on things like this, so we tried to show that it's indeed so that the shots are not always the same.
Also the fact that these sessions were work for Elvis just like the actual movies, was something we thought was interesting, and pretty much never really covered in the Elvis world before - it's interesting to see the constant switching of not only the background where Elvis posed, but his wardrobe. They really took everything out of these sessions and while it's a shame the EPE vaults are not open to all, all the shots we've collected from everywhere we could think of do give a good idea of everything went down when sorted out like you see in the folders.

Patti Page Died Aged 85: With record sales estimated at more than 100m, which included more than a dozen million-selling singles, Patti Page, who died January 1 aged 85, was one of America's favourite popular singers of the 1950s. She was dubbed "the Singing Rage", and her alto voice was often double tracked, on hits such as 'How Much Is That Doggie in the Window' and, her signature song, 'Tennessee Waltz'. (Right; Patti Page with Elvis in 1958)
Page achieved several career milestones in American pop culture, but she'll be remembered for indelible hits that crossed the artificial categorizations of music and remained atop the charts for months to reach a truly national audience.
She received several honours from the music industry and was due to be presented with a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys ceremony in February 2013.
'Tennessee Waltz' scored the rare achievement of reaching No. 1 on the pop, country and R&B charts simultaneously and was officially adopted as one of two official songs by the state of Tennessee. Its reach was so powerful, six other artists reached the charts the following year with covers.
Two other hits, 'I Went To Your Wedding' and 'Doggie in the Window', which had a second life for decades as a children's song, each spent more than two months at No. 1. Patti was a wonderful singer with a real special voice. So special, Page managed to maintain her career when most singers of her generation and their more innocent songs were shoved aside by the swinging hips of Elvis Presley. Page proved herself something of a match for the nascent rock `n' roll crowd and its obsession with sex, continuing to place songs on the pop charts into the 1960s and the country charts into the `80s.
|
|
Interestingly there are several Elvis connections as Patti Page was married to Elvis film choreographer Charles O'Curran. Elvis often sang 'Tennessee Waltz' at home for fun - and whilst recording the soundtrack for 'Blue Hawaii' with Charles O'Curran Elvis name-drops 'I Went To Your Wedding'.
Writer Lester Bangs is often quoted noting that "Elvis kicked 'How Much Is That Doggie in the Window' out the window - and replaced it with the sexuality of Rock'n'Roll."
Page received the Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 1980.
Page is survived by her son, Daniel O'Curran, daughter Kathleen Ginn and sister Peggy Layton.

Elvis Is Everywhere -- Still: Michael Sigman is the son of Carl Sigman who composed the English lyrics for 'What Now My Love', here he explains why Elvis is still everywhere for him....
-- I never met Elvis, but sometimes it seems that the sentiment in Mojo Nixon's anthem -- "Elvis is everywhere / Elvis is everything / Elvis is everybody / Elvis is still the King" -- remains as true as ever.
Without Elvis, my stunningly fleeting screen career would have been unthinkable. The TV coverage of Elvis's famous "gold belt buckle" June 1972 press conference - prior to his first-ever live concerts in New York - includes a few nanoseconds of me at age 22 covering the event for the music magazine Record World. My colleague Gregg Geller, two seats to my left, recalls that Colonel Parker, ever the entrepreneur, sold pencils at the confab.
David McGee, an Elvis fanatic and another erstwhile Record World comrade, got hitched at one a while back in true Elvis fashion. His wedding vows featured such sentiments as "Do you, Mary, promise not to treat David like a houn' dog?" and "David, you don't be cruel, okay?"
David captured the heartbreak so many felt when Elvis died in 1977 when he wrote in Record World, "In Elvis, I found someone to believe in; in rock and
|
|
roll, as I learned it from him, I found a way of life that I wouldn't swap for any amount of money, because it was, and is, endlessly rewarding and fulfilling. It's only natural that I feel a certain hollowness inside of me now. A certain hollowness? I feel as if my guts had been ripped out."
Elvis's vast legacy also embraces the many Elvises who followed, including Elvis Crespo, Elvis Mitchell, Elvis Duran and, of course, Elvis Costello.
My friend Will's dad got his Elvises mixed up when he commanded Will to turn down the volume on Elvis Costello's "Armed Forces." Will told his dad it was
Elvis (as if that were an explanation); his dad considered that possibility for a moment and asked, "Is this what killed him?"
Speaking of dads and Elvises, my dad didn't like Elvis Presley one bit. Dad, a crafter of pop songs in the Tin Pan Alley tradition, saw Elvis as an existential threat to his career. He did like it when his co-composed Sigman/Becaud tune "What Now My Love" became a staple of the Elvis's live show and was recorded for posterity on the "Aloha from Hawaii" album. When a golf partner asked Dad to name some of his tunes and he mentioned "What Now My Love," the clueless guy said, "You didn't write that -- Elvis did."

Proof that Elvis is still everywhere arrived in my mailbox just after Christmas in the form "Elvis -- Prince From Another Planet," a new boxed set commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Madison Square Garden performances. This gift from David Stein, an old friend who worked at the firm that promoted those shows, includes a DVD with rare footage of the pre-concert press conference. Right after the King unleashes the buckle seen round the world, my (and Gregg's) split second of TV time -- and, it seems, the four decades since -- arrives and vanishes in an instant.

'The Rebel & The King' expanded E-book NOW OUT: 'The Rebel & The King' by Nick Adams is now released as a Kindle/E-Book version.
The expanded e-Book edition includes: 30 photos (some never before seen), reviews, essay by Elvis and Gladys, best-selling author Elaine Dundy, introduction by Tupelo historian Roy Turner and new in-depth epilogue by Allyson Adams.
The book is a simple but fun rundown of her dad's recollections of his friendship with Elvis that began in 1956 when they met on a 20th Century Fox back lot while Elvis was shooting "Love Me Tender." (Nick Adams had an interview for a part that he didn't get).
The bulk of the book recounts the eight days Adams spent with Elvis in Memphis later that year just before a September 1956 homecoming concert in Tupelo, Miss. Elvis was born in Tupelo and lived there until he was 13, when the family moved to Memphis.

New Elvis Army Photos!:LIFE magazine has just published a group of rare and unpublished Elvis army photos. Taken by photographers James Whitmore and Al Fenn they capture a moment in Elvis' life when he was poised to remind everyone who might have doubted it that, despite two years of taking orders, he was ready to again be the King.
... Back in 1958 the biggest musical star on the planet was drafted into the United States Army. Sure, Elvis Aaron Presley often affected a sneer that would drive most drill sergeants to near-apoplexy, and his pompadour was hardly the sort of hairstyle one associated with America's fighting men. But Elvis was a good ol' boy, born in Mississippi and raised in Tennessee, and maybe his humble Southern roots allowed for a more seamless transition from pop-culture icon to buck private.
Whatever the reason Elvis looked like he belonged in a uniform - and by all accounts, his brothers in arms saw what he was made of, and accepted him as one of them. It was impossible, of course, for anyone to pretend that Elvis was just another soldier; but he worked hard to fit in and to do what was asked of him, and after two years, when Sgt. Presley was honorably discharged, it was evident that the boy from Tupelo had grown up.
It was also evident, though, that Elvis was hardly heartbroken about leaving the military. His two years serving in Germany had shown the world, and had shown Elvis himself, that he could handle something more than a guitar, and could perform tasks that didn't involve gyrating in front of screaming bobbysoxers. In 1960, it was time to get back to doing what he did best: it was time to leave Sgt. Presley behind, and to be Elvis again.
The series of photos - most of which never appeared in LIFE - showing Elvis, along with his 15-year-old girlfriend, Priscilla Beaulieu, in Germany on the day he left for the States (March 2, 1960), and Elvis again at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he landed on March 3, sans Priscilla. He was officially discharged from the Army on March 5.
|
|
After his two year hitch, rock and roll idol Elvis Presley wore a sergeant's chevrons but no sideburns.Elvis said, "If I say the Army made a man of me, it would give the impression I was an idiot before I was drafted. I wasn't exactly that."
Elvis was, in fact, a smart soldier. His agents back home had been pretty smart, too, selling 20 million RCA Victor records to the jukebox set. These earned ELVIS $1.3 million in addition to his $145.24 a month service pay. Elvis paid the U.D. 91% of the total in taxes, or enough to support about 150 of his fellow soldiers for a year. Behind him at Ray Barracks near Friedberg, Elvis had left hordes of palpitating Fräuleins and the pretty 16-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu,
daughter of an Air Force captain stationed at Wiesbaden. Elvis kissed her before he flew to the aid of the girls back home, sorrowful at parting but anxious to get into his bright-colored pants and back to his hip-swinging singing.

The anniversary screening featured re-mastered video projected on multiple screens recreating the thrill of being there 40 years ago to the day. Elvis fans packed the Neal Blaisdell Center, the same venue where 40 years earlier, Elvis took the stage for the concert that became the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history. In honor of the king's groundbreaking performances in 1973, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie declared January 14, 2013, as "Elvis, Aloha from Hawai'i via Satellite Day." |

Elvis shows Jacko the way - back in 1956!: While everyone, including EPE, references the famous Elvis on tip-toes dance-thrusts from 'Jailhouse Rock' fans seemed to have missed the fact that Elvis filmed a similar routine for mainstream audiences as far back for his 1956 movie 'Love Me Tender'!
The 'Poor Boy' segment captures Elvis' early action but being in a "period drama" no one bothered to take notice except the girls that screamed and wet their seats!

Elvis' Cadillac Tours Australian Hospital!: Back in 1968 it was like Christmas in July to the Australian kids in Port Kembla, but instead of Santa's sleigh laden with gifts it was a gold Cadillac rolling in presents from The King. Hundreds of underprivileged kids around Australia shared in thousands of dollars worth of toys from Elvis, delivered wrapped in gold. The Cadillac was painted with 40 coats of diamond dust and fish scales, and had $10,000 worth of gold equipment, including a lounge, a television, a telephone, an electric boot-polisher, plus a refreshment bar with an ice-maker and refrigerator.
Port Kembla's hospital was one of 40 stops on the fund-raising tour that raised $150,000 for The Benevolent Society and other local charities.
After the tour, Elvis was made a "life governor" of the society.

Amassing Elvis: Branko Kavcic has never forgotten the first time he laid eyes on Elvis Presley. It was 1968 and Mr. Kavcic, a recently arrived 22-year-old machinist from Dornberk, Slovenia, was watching a movie on television at his brother's Toronto home. Mr. Kavcic was mesmerized by the dark-haired, charismatic, cliff-diving star of 'Fun in Acapulco'. A lifelong fan of The King was born.
"To me, he was something special," Mr. Kavcic recalls. "This guy was different, so gentle, so nice looking, and he sang like a violin."
In the more than four decades since that powerful first impression took hold, he has a collection of Elvis memorabilia on which he estimates that he has spent close to $100,000.
|
|
That figure doesn't include the thousands more he spent on his most prized possession: the very first prototype of the 1969 Stutz Blackhawk. Mr. Presley, a car collector, was the first to buy the luxury vehicle (though his was the second prototype), eventually owning several and forever becoming linked with it.
Filling two rooms in Mr. Kavcic's Vaughan, Ont., home, the other Elvis items range from books, records, CDs, posters, figurines and musical instruments to commemorative wines, plates and coins.
Above Right - driving the Stutz Blackhawk with actress Suzanna Leigh who co-starred with Elvis 'Paradise, Hawaiian Style'.
Mr. Kavcic's compulsion to surround himself with all things King began after his first trip to Memphis in 1981. His success has afforded Mr. Kavcic the means to scour local shops and markets for new items to add to his collection every time he travels to Memphis, an annual event for the past decade. He says he's known in the Elvis community for snapping up "hundreds or thousands" of dollars' worth of pieces on a whim.
A lifelong car fanatic, it's fitting that the item Mr. Kavcic considers to be the crown jewel of his collection is the original prototype of the 1969 Stutz Blackhawk made famous by Mr. Presley. Stutz Motor Co. was a U.S. manufacturer of luxury cars that, during its heyday, enjoyed the reputation as a favourite ride of Hollywood's A-list entertainers.
Though the company stopped production in the mid-1930s, New York banker James O'Donnell revived the flagging brand in 1968. Stutz spent more than
$300,000 to manufacture the first Blackhawk prototype. A savvy marketer, Mr. O'Donnell invited Mr. Presley to test-drive the original 1969 Stutz Blackhawk prototype, a sleek, hand-built coupe that Mr.O'Donnell hoped would rival the Rolls Royce. The singer, a dedicated car collector, was reportedly so taken by the
Blackhawk that he wanted to buy it off the lot, but it wasn't for sale. Instead, Mr. Presley purchased the model's second prototype for $26,500 in October, 1970, becoming the first person to own the new Blackhawk and forever connecting the car to his name.
Mr. O'Donnell kept the original car for himself, but in 2002, his brother sold the car to Stutz collector Greg Ryckman. Two years later, the Blackhawk was back on the market.Mr. Kavcic made an impulse purchase of the car when he attended the Toronto Spring International Classic Car Auction in April, 2004.
One month after taking the vehicle home, Mr. Kavcic was invited to display his Stutz in front of Graceland. He hired four security guards and purchased an 18-wheeler just to transport the vehicle to Memphis. Since then, Mr. Kavcic has toured the car at major Elvis festivals across North America, and has been featured on an episode of the TV show Dream Car Garage .
The car has also brought him a great deal of attention on the Elvis circuit. He now counts Elvis notables such as Sonny West among close friends. While he keeps the Stutz locked up for most of the year in a storage unit, Mr. Kavcic still considers this splurge the best money he's ever spent.
"People are calling me from museums saying that they would like to buy it," he says. "But I'm not saying a price because I don't think I will ever sell it."

"Elvis, Lennon & JFK" New Book: A new book by author David Chisnell that looks at 20th century cultural history and what lies behind fame. Elvis, Lennon & JFK is set on the night of John Lennon’s assassination in New York 1980. Having just been shot dead John finds himself in a strange room with only Elvis and JFK for company. Both try to convince John that he has been shot but he prefers to believe that he’s in the middle of some great acid trip. Finally they succeed and John discovers that he has joined a very exclusive club. Membership requirements are that millions of people around the world will forever remember where they were when they heard of your death. There are only the three members.
From there onwards the trio engage in a battle of one-upmanship, each trying to prove that he was more important than the other two whilst alive and that, in death, he has left the greatest legacy. All three have valid claims and the reader is pretty much left to make up his or her own mind on the ‘winner’.
A monitor in the room allows the trio to watch events as they happen on Earth. This has allowed both Elvis and JFK to keep up to date with all that has happened since their respective deaths. Over the years JFK has become something of a Beatles fan but, unfortunately for John, only likes the songs written by Paul McCartney. This provides several opportunities for humour and anger in equal parts. JFK has also discovered who was responsible for his death but only hints and drops clues to the other two.
|
|
Elvis has kept constant tabs on both Priscilla and Lisa Marie and provokes many tear-jerking moments as he reflects on how they’ve carried on without him.
The book is never far away from moments of humour, anger, incrimination and accusation.
There is enormous humour and heartache in the book. Many of the stories will already be known to the reader but, as with all autobiographies, they gain more clarity and confirmation when told through the words of the trio themselves..... for more info click to Amazon above.

Elvis' former Audubon neighbors in new documentary: Before there was Graceland, a cozy home on Audubon Drive served as the King's original palace. Resident Christine Todd said her driveway was directly across the street from Elvis Presley's at his first home in 1956. Todd said she and other community members watched him evolve into an icon.
"The Elvis years were everybody's favorite to talk about," said Todd in a documentary that was being filmed in his old house off Park Avenue last week.
Students at Rhodes College interviewed the former neighbors of Elvis Presley as a way to connect the world with Memphis history in a new way. The interviews will be presented on the Crossroads to Freedom website as a series about Presley's activities, love interests and kindness during his 13-
|
|
month stay in East Memphis.
Gayle Hughes, Rhodes senior history major, said she was drawn to the project because Elvis is such an icon. "Whenever you talk about music, especially Memphis music you can't not mention Elvis and the contributions he has made," said Hughes.
Rhodes has overseen Elvis' old estate, which has been owned by the Mike Curb Institute for six years, since the home was purchased on eBay in 2006 by
former MGM president Mike Curb and the institute was created by the Nashville music mogul.
At the filming guests stood around reminiscing about the days Natalie Wood came to visit and how they couldn't cross the street without a police escort for most of the 13 months Elvis resided in the quiet neighborhood.
Larry Busby, owner of Front Street Deli, said he began his business endeavors with Elvis' move to the neighborhood.
"We didn't realize the enormity of Elvis Presley, but we figured it out quickly, when you couldn't get through Audubon Drive with a car!" |
|
He said he began charging fans $1 to park in his driveway and front yard while his father was at work, but was unceremoniously shut down when his dad came home early one day and couldn't park.
Barb Metz-Steiner, former neighbor, said she had the best seat any girl of that time could've asked for - her bedroom faced the home.
"I could lay in my bed, look out my window and keep track of what Elvis was doing," said Metz-Steiner. "He was just the cutest thing and the biggest flirt I've ever known."
About 10 months into his stay, the frenzy became too much for the neighborhood and Busby said his father told him the king apologized to his neighbors and revealed he had bought "a house in the country," now known as Graceland, and that he would be moving soon.
"Sure enough a few months passed, the moving vans pulled up and Elvis was gone," said Busby.

'Elvis Files Magazine Issue 2' - Review: Released last month, this magazine was created by Erik Lorentzen in order to feature Elvis stories that would not fit into his "Elvis Files" series of books - as well as a place to include all the extra new unpublished Elvis photos that he has recently purchased.
I have seen little about this December magazine publication elsewhere on the Internet and yet I found it another excellent magazine, and for me even more interesting than the first issue.
The real treat here is Lorentzen’s personal story of meeting Elvis and visiting Graceland, as well as lots of exclusive on-stage photos taken during that 1975 tour by the Norwegian fan club.
There are of course plenty of other articles in the magazine including ....
- Elvis and The Martial Arts – by Master Kang Ree.
- "The World of Elvis Jumpsuits" – Featuring the unusual Black PasSaRyu Karate jacket from August/ September 1974.
- Elvis and The DIG magazine. Four great pages of candids from April 1956
- A rare Elvis Interview from 1964.
Plus plenty more Rare Candids not featured in previous Elvis Files books.

The publicity promises.... A fantastic new DVD release filled to the brim with outtake material from ‘On Tour’ (1972). There have already been a couple of releases with this raw footage that – fortunately for us – somehow escaped from the vaults from MGM. The producers of this DVD show us there is a treasure trove of material that would make a spectacular official remake of this in 1972, Golden Globe winning documentary. Starting with a good looking and effective working Main Menu, you can choose the chapters of your liking. The producers have made this DVD in chronological order. Starting with the studio rehearsals, on to the rehearsal on the road and then on to the live concerts. Also: from the Madison Square Garden Press Conference (great footage and very sharp close ups of Elvis!) to the Press Conference in Hawaii (November, 1972) to announce ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ (in very good quality!).
You will get to view an enormous amount of material. Carefully researched from the best sources available. The rehearsals are fantastic to see and give us an intriguing look behind the scenes. Just how good are those images and what a pitty so less was used of it in the official version. To these eyes there are many new shots and camera angles, also with the live material. The images of Elvis in the dark blue suit (April 14th, 1972) are great! Another ‘very well done’ is the way ‘very raw footage’ is presented. Accompanied by music of Elvis we get to see all kinds of shots along the way; among that very complete footage of the TCB Band in a plane on their way to the next gig. Touching images of the Sweets sleeping in their chairs, knowing it is only recently that we have lost Sylvia and Myrna. Also features the Elvis interview with the producers of the film, one of the most stunning pieces of film shot for this project and should be released officially. To round it up: this DVD release is pure joy and a must have release for every fan!

'Country Hero in Vegas!' New Import: To be released in early February on the VV label will be their second release entitled "Country Hero in Vegas!" featuring the unreleased Las Vegas performances on January 30th 1971, dinner show. After the success of the first release We decided: first to improve the product and second, keeping the same formula to give you more.…..
Here we present Elvis to the begin of the season .. no surprises in the tracklist with the exception of his latest single There Goes My Everything, but the show is extremely solid and good, the sound is good and powerful using a straight copy of the original source tape, We were able to keep Elvis' vocal power central to the mix whilst at the same time giving a new definition to the supporting musicians and singers.
Elvis' performance on these early season nights is superb as he is still performing to the best of his ability. Although he delivers short shows they are delivered in a very intense, crisp and fresh manner that cannot be denied. Elvis was on stage to have fun and demonstrated this during the older, classic numbers, but songs such as 'Polk Salad Annie', 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'Sweet Caroline' never sounded better. The season will be remembered for the introduction of the new opening composition 'Also Sprach Zarathustra', also for the beautiful new closing number ‘The Impossible Dream’ which Elvis sang with power and feeling giving us proof that Elvis continued to grow as a performer.
The LP 140 VINYL GRAM is a LIMITED HAND NUMBERED 500 COPIES. It comes with an three fold 300 gram high quality GLOSSY sleeve both sides printed, giving an unique view. The sleeve will be accompanied by relevant liner notes and with many photographs of the Elvis NOW suit from the season.
This vinyl will include a bonus CD and 7” vinyl EP. In the bonus CD you have the possibility to listen the complete concert + a selection of 16 songs (32 min) soundboard recording, coming for the previous four days shows. |
|
From the opening night January 26 you can have the possibility to listen the evolution of Elvis’ performing during the begin of the season, we practically included all the songs no performed in the January 30 DS . In January RCA released what is without doubt the best Elvis album of the 1970’s, Elvis Country. In this season of Elvis performed three songs from the album. From here the EP idea in the matter to give the possibility to use the three songs performed to create a special Elvis Country EP. The EP comes with four songs and two fold sleeve both printed.

Elvis and Ireland by Ivor Casey: Book Description: Elvis and Ireland is the “Irish Biography” of Elvis Presley.
It is the detailed story of Elvis Presley’s life and career, combined with a timeline of events in Irish popular culture and the social changes brought on by his unique brand of rock ‘n’ roll.
What you will find here is just about everything to do with Elvis and his links with Ireland including anecdotes, entertaining trivia on Elvis’s connection with Ireland, his Irish chart successes, as well as areas of censorship.
|
|
You will also learn about Irish songs he covered and Irish singers who covered his work. Find out what many Irish personalities have to say about Elvis, as well as what was said about the star from the Dáil to the pulpit.
Elvis and Ireland focuses on how Irish artists used Elvis and American popular culture for their own artistic efforts, from Ireland’s earliest showbands and beat-groups to the rock legends Rory Gallagher, Phil Lynott and Bono. It covers several decades of Irish popular music without ever losing track of Elvis’s story. In brief this book is a view of Elvis Presley through Irish eyes. Elvis and Ireland brings together the story of the global superstar from his birth to his untimely death, picking up the Irish connections along the way. To add a further Irish dimension, the book also features artwork of Elvis by three famous Irish artists. Hundreds of Elvis books already exist but rarely does a new Elvis book have something to say from a totally different cultural stand point. All music fans, and not just the Irish ones, will find this an exhilarating journey through the career of the universal music icon.
Published by Appello Press (7 Jan 2013), 246 pages, ISBN-10: 0957375204/ISBN-13: 978-0957375208.
EIN Comment: Elvis and Ireland is an admirable attempt at telling the Elvis biography with an "Irish" flavor. The author has a good, fluent writing style and his narrative is strongest in the early chapters where sizeable accounts of how Elvis' anti-establishment gyrations/impact were recorded by the Irish media impress. Later chapters struggle somewhat to convey a similar potency (mirroring how Elvis' life had become bland mainstream in many respects). The book would have benefited from lists of Elvis' single and album placings in Ireland as their spotted documentation throughout the text is sometimes confusing.
Elvis 'low calorie' Media Bytes: Elvis G.I Blues FTD vinyl now in stock with most suppliers...... About 'Elvis – Aloha via Satellite': Boxcar Enterprises in association with JAT Publishing will release a 40th Year Anniversary special book, in celebration of Elvis’ iconic ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ titled, “Elvis – Aloha via Satellite”in February (now April) 2013. Also collected here exclusively are scores of historical memorabilia and the Colonels original internal documents and scripts. This is intended to create a time-travel experience of sorts documenting the most groundbreaking event in the annals of television history.
On January 14th 1973 “Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii - Via Satellite” was the first live concert to be televised live with a global viewing audience of 1.5 Billion. An audience larger than man's first landing on the moon!
From the ‘making of’ to the show itself, the reader enjoys reliving the magic of this extraordinary event and is sufficiently reminded that 1,500,000,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong! (News, Source: EIN)
The King "live via satellite" a Great Experience in 2013: The local Honolulu newspaper gave Elvis' 'Aloha From Hawaii 2013' a great review. Longtime arts journalist John Berger reported...
... Any lingering suspicions that the long-anticipated "Elvis ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ 40th Anniversary Screening" was going to amount to a shared viewing of the familiar television special that’s available for free on YouTube were laid to rest as soon as the lights went down on several thousand Elvis fans who’d assembled to celebrate The King’s "live via satellite" concert last night in Blaisdell Arena.
First, there is no way that watching anything on a p/c screen — or even a "home entertainment center" — can match the experience of seeing it on a theater-size screen and hearing it on an arena sound system.
Second, the 40-year-old television special was dramatically modernized and upgraded for the anniversary screening. The entire concert was re-imagined as a multi-image experience — at times there were two or three images on the giant screen, at others there were 16 or more in various combinations.
Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie sent a shout out to the people who were seated "right up there in the upper deck" where he had been sitting 40 years ago, and asked everyone who had been in the audience for the original "Aloha from Hawaii" concert to stand — and a notable number of people did. |
|
The bottom line to the evening was about more than commemorating an entertainment milestone 40 years on. It was remembering or, perhaps, learning that before there were Elvis impersonators mumbling "thankyuverrymuch," and tribute artists and look-alikes and "weekend warrior" karaoke singers, there was a flesh-and-blood entertainer named Elvis Presley who created something fresh and new and revolutionary in American music.
So much that the entertainers of today and their fans take for granted began with Elvis.

"Aloha from Hawaii" 40th Anniversary News Story on Hawaii TV: Forty years ago to the day, Elvis fans flocked to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center for the "Aloha from Hawaii" 40th Anniversary Screening. In a news story by KHON2.com, fans can see the first video glimps inside the 40th anniversary celebration.
The anniversary screening featured re-mastered video projected on multiple screens, recreating the thrill of being at the original concert. Priscilla Presley also recorded a special message to fans for the screening.
"This beautiful state has always been an important place for our family," said Priscilla Presley. "It is here where scenes of three of his movies, and several of his concerts - most importantly where we as a family have, and still do, come to relax."
Hawaiian Governor Neil Abercrombie declared January 14, 2013, as "Elvis, Aloha from Hawai'i via Satellite Day."

Was EIN right to publish?: We asked for more feeedback from our readers on our controversial article Calling Elvis - songs that paint the portrait of a troubled King (see 11 Jan). Your feedback for and against EIN publishing the article continues to roll in. Here is a selection of recent messages which themselves offer plenty of 'food for thought' (thanks guys!!):
I am a 50 year old fan/collector from New Jersey. The article in question made me laugh. I love all phases of Elvis' career and can justify all his song choices. If he could have lived 6 more days I would have seen him in concert at Long Island Nassau Coliseum. I never saw him but have a huge collection of cds, vhs, and dvds. Most people I meet don't really know too much about his recording legacy and care even less. All the images on the website pretty much sum it up. Ultimately it is a matter of perspective. He did it to himself and changing a non fans idea of him is a lot of work. It took me a long time to get my wife to appreciate his contribution to our culture and what a truly magnificient singer he was. She does however think that Elvis fans are nuts. Thanks and love the site! (Glenn Heim)

While I did not agree with the article "Calling Elvis - songs that paint the portrait of a troubled King," I did not have any problem with your posting it on EIN. I agree with you that "to be presented with an opposing view should be seen as a reminder that not everyone views Elvis in the same light." And I appreciated Marty's dissecting the article in Elvis'
defense.
Who is Elvis in today's wider world? Unfortunately Elvis is not generally held in the regard within the United States that he deserves. There always appears to be more effort to tear him down than to recognize his contributions. It seems to be a popular notion to suggest he "stole" rock and roll music from African-American performers. What always makes me laugh is that Elvis' early music draws more from country music in my opinion. And he was billed as a country singer. He sort of fused country and rhythm and blues together, the same way the band Chicago fused pop-rock and jazz. But nobody ever says Chicago "stole" anything. But back to your question, Elvis in today's wider world is anything and everything people want to make of him. Facts no longer seem relevant. I was at the jumpsuit exhibit at Graceland about 4 years ago and kept hearing person after person be shocked that the jumpsuits weren't as large as they were expecting. Several men even said, "Wow - I couldn't fit into that myself."
They all had some notion of Elvis being 500 pounds when he wore jumpsuits. I'm glad there are a lot of us who still celebrate Elvis the man and Elvis the musician / vocalist, because I'm afraid to a lot of others Elvis is defined by his death and by the rumors and tabloid stories. But either way he endures and, good or bad, and stands as one of a kind and not to be forgotten. (Ion@tcbmail.com)
I don't know why EIN published the article. What purpose does it do to promote badly researched drivel? Weve read it all before and the views of ignorant journalists doesnt deserve space on Elvis sites. (The Masked Clown)
I for one wasn't offended by the article. Keep up the good work EIN and keep on giving us more articles that are interesting and different. BTW loved your use of images to make your point! (PMac)

Monday 14 January 2013.....the historic Elvis Aloha From Hawaii happened 40 years ago today!!! |
- - - ALOHA The Concert 2013, Honolulu, Hawaii - EIN was there - |
Aloha From Hawaii - The Concert 2013- EIN Exclusive Review: Living as we do in an age where communication technology connects people oceans apart — and from their cellphones — it's hard to imagine the novelty of a concert that reached a global television audience. But when Elvis Presley took the stage 40 years ago in Honolulu, the only thing bigger than "The King" was that his "Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii" concert was beamed live via satellite to 40 countries in Europe and Asia. (It would not be seen in the United States until three months later.)
A mainland production crew from NBC-TV flew to Hawaii and used camera operators from KGMB, the local CBS affiliate, to broadcast the concert. The site was the Honolulu International Center, which is now called the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
January 14th 2013, the recreation of that event was stunning for all who were there. Around 700+ had flown in internationally while over 3,000 tickets had been sold to the actual event. Not bad for a DVD concert replay!
|
|
After the exciting build-up of being in the actual Arena, firstly Tom Moffatt introduced the show with Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie proclaiming a new Hawaii "Elvis Presley Day" and handing over the official document to EPE CEO Jack Soden. Following that Priscilla Presley appeared via video to explain the significance, apologise for not being there and to thank all of Elvis’ fans.
Then the real excitement kicked off with the "In Concert" portion of Elvis leaving Graceland in a helicopter used connecting to Elvis flying in to Hawaii in the helicopter.
And then the sound CRANKED UP as the ‘Also Sprach’ theme told everyone that ELVIS WAS IN THE BUILDING.
The video quality was magnificent compared to the versions we know and the immediate surprise that ALTERNATE camera angles and multiple screens were used throughout the show. This not only added to increase the feel of the action on stage – BUT also gave us plenty of camera angles that we have NEVER seen before – nor knew existed. |
|
After the Intermission The Stamps and Joe Guercio came on stage to explain their part in the production and to sing ‘Sweet Sweet Spirit’ which was announced as Elvis’ lucky warm-up song and performed that night before the original broadcast in his dressing room.
Steamroller, Burning Love, My Way, What Now My Love, Fever, every song felt invigorated and new.
Every fan wanted a copy of this new presentation and it is a real shame it is not a part of the Legacy release. But it does let fans know that there is plenty more ALOHA footage available for future projects.
Even the "non" Elvis who had just come along for the ride said how impressed they were with the whole show and the applause for Elvis’ performances echoed throughout the Arena.
It was a SERIOUSLY impressive night with the sound pumping loud you really felt part of the whole experience. EPE put far more into this presentation that most people expected, it was a real winner.
Go here for some exclusive EIN Aloha images. More tomorrow, it's 1am – the after-party is calling!

Aloha 40th Anniversary celebrations: The Hawaii based Aloha 40th Anniversary celebrations continue today, Monday, with the 700 plus fans’ excitement building as we all await the special concert performance tonight in the HIC Arena (see advert).
Yesterday started with a special Elvis Gospel Show which turned out to be one of the highlights of the week.
The whole event was beautifully paced with performances by each individual - as well as songs combining each performer with the glorious backing vocals of The Stamps. The voices of Larry Strickland, Ed Hill and particularly Bill Baize are still stunning and the blend of harmonies were moving for one and all.
Clips of ELVIS' own gospel performances were also featured and his associates (Joe Guercio was also present) also told little tales of performing with Elvis and his love of Gospel.
Andy Childs sang some beautiful solo songs and Terry Mike Jeffrey who followed similarly impressed.
Jamie Aaron Kelley knocked everyone out with his 'Million Dollar Quartet’ performance as well as gathering around the piano for the "On Tour" jam-session with Terry Mike Jeffrey's fine piano playing.
The best was saved for last with all members gathering together for a stunning 'How Great Thou Art' and then a delightful "spontaneous" American Trilogy.
Standing Ovations were rightfully given and the whole audience left feeling truly blessed and also blessed by Elvis' Sweet Sweet Spirit.

Was EIN right to publish??: Following publication of a controversial article Calling Elvis - songs that paint the portrait of a troubled King (see 11 Jan), a number of fans voiced their strong disapproval of both the article and EIN for publishing it.
Comments included:
Is it possible to read or find out what the policy of your website is as regards Elvis? If the site was mine there is no way on earth I would publicize articles such as that by Jeff Miers from the Buffalo News. What is the point of airing such unjustified and repellent views on Elvis? (Chris)
What I don't understand is why EIN would publish such a blatantly anti Elvis article which totally undermines the immense cultural impact Elvis had in the 50's (Lee Cheney)
|
|
In addition, prominent Memphis Mafia member, Marty Lacker, told EIN exactly what he thought about the views expressed in the article written by Jeff Miers (see 12 Jan).
In response to those readers who questioned EIN for publishing the article:
EIN has always prided itself on providing the widest range of news and views on "things Elvis"! The staff at EIN don't always agree with all that we publish, but we respect the 'free speech' and 'free thinking' ideals of modern, progressive societies.
As we expect most fans know the real (true) story, to be presented with an opposing view should be seen as a reminder that not everyone views Elvis in the same light! To put our heads in the sand and ignore wider views cannot ever be a good thing!
As one respected contemporary philosopher stated: "Without debate and affront there can be no greater understanding within or movement forward in our minds, or as a society!"
The reality is 99.9% of what EIN publishes promotes the Elvis legacy in a very positive way!!! That we publish a small number of not so tasteful or controversial items, shows in our view, a tolerance of other views and as importantly, a willingness to do what we can tensure, we as fans, do not become too complacent or insular!
EIN PS: Many thanks to Marty, Chris, Lee and all others for letting us know their views! We do appreciate it and hopefully it will help result in a better understanding of how Elvis is perceived.
Food for thought - who is Elvis in today's wider world (not just in the Elvis world)?:
Let EIN know what you think?
Elvis Music DVD re-enters Aussie ARIA chart: Elvis The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll has re-entered the ARIA Top 50 Music DVD chart at #32.
The release has been on the chart for an impressive 132 weeks in total peaking at #4. It is certified 4xPlatinum with sales exceeding 60,000 units. (News, Source: ARIA)

Scorching heat means a lotta, lotta Burning Love for Elvis fans in Parkes Festival: ELVIS fans from around the country braved the heatwave to pay homage to the King of Rock n’ Roll on the weekend at the 2013 Parkes Elvis Festival. With a maximum temperature of 42 degrees, disputed by many sweltering Elvises clad in polyester and wigs, the festival was hot but lost very little of its charm.
Tonto: Kemo sabe, who is that caped guy with the squaw in the white dress?
The Lone Ranger: Tonto, that's a Johnny Depp imitator (in the white dress, of course)
Tonto: Qui no sabe, Lone Ranger.
In fact, about 18,000 people flowed through the gates to celebrate all things lycra, Brylcreem and bacon. The street parade kicked off the busiest day of the festival, Saturday, and saw the Aloha Hawaii-themed floats roll down the main street, sporting the usual Priscillas and Elvises in their various incarnations over the decades.
The Hawaiian-themed grass skirts and leis seemed to fit the weather conditions, but sadly not a sea breeze could be felt and certainly the crash of waves was not heard.President of the festival committee, Gail Bartley, said soaring temperatures had been trying, but the slew of Elvis impersonators at the festival were willing to suffer for their art."You've got to give it to the boys," she said."They really go above and beyond in the name of Elvis."
Visiting Parkes for the annual festival, all the way from Switzerland, was Fanny Frey, a Rotary exchange student being hosted by the Rotary Club of Dubbo West. Fanny could not resist the chance to see what all the fuss was about and donned her hat and sunscreen. One of the first questions she asked, however, was: “Why does Parkes host an Elvis Festival? Does he have a connection to the town?”Fanny was told by friends that was a tricky question to answer.
An explanation of the festival’s evolution 21years ago to its current status seemed to satisfy her queries. She enjoyed the bouffants and bedazzled performers and dropped into The Dish on the way back to Dubbo.“I enjoyed it all but it was so hot, “ she said.“Where I live it would very rarely reach 35 degrees,” she said.
The five-day festival program featured a wide range of events including free main stage entertainment, look-alike contests, tribute to Elvis competition, the street parade, displays of Elvis memorabilia, Elvis gospel service, cars of the era show and more than 150 unique Elvis-style events. For loved-up Elvis lovers, there was even an Elvis wedding chapel on-site for couples to renew their wedding vows, complete with an Elvis celebrant. (News, Source: Lisa Minner, Central Western Daily)

Testing your Elvis IQ: On Jan. 8, Elvis Presley would have turned 78.
As it has done for the past 15 years, American Music Theatre will celebrate the King's birthday Saturday with "The Elvis Birthday Bash," with Scot Bruce portraying the young Elvis and Mike Albert portraying the older Elvis.
The show has been so popular that in 2009, AMT started "Mike Albert's Elvis Gospel Show." To be held Sunday, Jan. 20, the show also will feature the Stamps Quartet.
As both shows attest, Elvis still has legions of fans. Every year, more than 600,000 people visit his home, Graceland.
This past year, Elvis was behind only Michael Jackson in Forbes Magazine's annual list of top earning dead musicians, with $55 million in earnings between October 2011 and October 2012.
And Elvis' music still shakes people up. |

Just a few weeks ago, a high school in Salt Lake City announced it was canceling a production of "All Shook Up," a musical inspired by Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," which includes some Elvis songs. One suspicious mind complained that, among other things, the songs were too sexual. The school later announced it would do the show after all, with some edits.

EPE Condolences for the Family of John Wilkinson: At the Aloha Hawaii 40th Anniversary celebrations today, Jack Soden (CEO of EPE) started the morning by rightfully recognising the great sadness over the loss of Elvis guitarist John Wilkinson. He stated that beloved member of Elvis' TCB Band, John Wilkinson, passed away Friday after a fight with cancer. EPE sends their thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and the entire Elvis community during this difficult time.
He read out the statement by Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley...
"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Wilkinson family, John and the beautiful music he made with Elvis will live forever in our hearts."
John Wilkinson played the rhythm guitar alongside Elvis in the legendary TCB Band. A statement from the family, released through family spokesman Gary Ellison, said Wilkinson was proud of the fact that he never turned down a request for an autograph.
"It didn't matter if John was meeting adoring fans, joking with Chuck Berry about keeping his B-string in tune, or if he was talking to a neighbour about her dog, people were people to him,"

Elvis Aloha 40th Anniversary In Hawaii: Today in lovely Waikiki EPE presented the 'Conversations on Elvis - Hawaiian Style' featuring special guests Tom Moffatt(below Right) , Jerry Hopkins, Bill Baise, Ed Hill and Larry Strickland from The Stamps as well as Joe Guercio and Larry Gellar, Ginny & Vicky Tiu (below Middle) who also stared in Elvis' movies as young children were also present.
There is no doubt that this was one of the best 'Conversations on Elvis' yet presented as not only did Bill Baise, Larry Strickland and Joe Guercio (below left) really kick off some great reminiscences by their honest sparing together on stage but Larry Geller (shown right) also brought the house down with his honest and touching stories of times spent with Elvis in Hawaii in 1965 as well as the last 1977 vacation.
It was a very moving experience that really helped the audience understand the emotional greatness - as well as the power and joy - behind Elvis The Legend.

Elvis Express Radio, Remembering John Wilkinson: EIN's great friend Lee Dawson posted - Less than 24 hours ago, my friend John Wilkinson passed away peacefully at his home after a long battle with Cancer. As I found myself not being able to sleep, I decided to work on my own tribute to a friend and a real legend of the Elvis World. I would very much like to invite you to read my tribute to John Wilkinson.
It starts.. I knew that one day I would have to write this but still it is none the less heartbreaking for me to sit down and write on my website that John Wilkinson, one of the true legends of the Elvis world, a genuine gentleman and a dear and much loved friend has lost his long term battle against Cancer and has sadly died at the age of just 67.
Those of us who are lucky enough to have known the private and personal side of Johnny will all be united in our grief and will all say the same thing, and that is John really was one of the nicest people we have ever had the honour of knowing and to have been able to have called our friend.
.... John used to tell me how much Elvis loved the song "Early Morning Rain" but for the longest of times, John was just about the only band member not to be asked to do a solo when Elvis introduced the band on stage. John assured me that he really did not think anything of it, in fact he told me "Lee, I was just thrilled to be on that stage with him, doing a solo really did not bother me."
But then one night after a show, Red West came to find John and told him that Elvis wanted him to know how much he appreciated his rhythm guitar playing and that he really does not intentionally leave him out of the solo performances on stage. John assured Red that it's not a problem and that there were millions of people who would kill to be in the position he was in, and told him to tell Elvis he |
|
was fine with things the way they were.
And so Red went away and told Elvis what John had said. The next night, John received word that Elvis wanted to see him in his suite. John entered the Kings domain and Elvis walked over to him, shook his hand and said “John, I just want to apologise to you personally, I know you can play and I want you to know that during the next show, I’m gonna ask you to play me something OK?" John smilled acknowledging him and thanked him, but was thinking, "Yeah, right!", But he did what he promised and then Elvis' live performances of "Early Morning Rain" were born.
Please go HERE for EER's moving tribute to John Wilkinson.

"Elvis - A rip-off artist and, for a very brief period of time, a genius" Marty Lacker Comments on this greatly mistaken story:
.... On reading the story below written by Jeff Miers, I have to shake my head in amazement how someone comes 60 years later and pontificates about the importance of Elvis and black music in the 50's. I don't know how old Miers is but I want to bet he wasn't even born in the 50's and experienced how Elvis changed the culture of the world and broke down the barriers for black music and black artists like those he named.
I don't like it when these so-called intellectuals try to put their spin on history when they weren't there to experience it as I and many others my age were. Most of those early black artists have praised Elvis for what he did for them including Little Richard who was trying to be in the forefront of that music but many white parents didn't allow it in their homes. Then along came Elvis and he liberated teenagers and black artists, why do you think James brown was so enamored of him that he wanted to be his close friend and attended his funeral.
Yes, Elvis was greatly influenced by the old Mississippi Blues artists and music as well as Country music back then. His style came naturally to him because of it because it's what he felt inside. He was always the first to say that and pay homage to those old artists. There's a reason black folk of the 50's loved his music because they felt his sincerity and realism of it. That's why when he released his records back then and through the very early 60's he was #1 across the Billboard

charts. R&B, Pop and Country. Even Jesse Jackson while on the Larry King Show a few years ago schooled a so-called young black cultural expert music reporter for Rolling Stone named Toure about the impact of Elvis and what he did for black music and artists.
While Toure ignorantly said Michael Jackson brought black music to white people Jesse scolded him and said Elvis did it 15 years before anyone knew who Michael was. Me thinks he thinketh too much of himself to be self titled a cultural expert. Be schooled in true history before you make such a claim.
As for Chuck D's comments, talk about reverse racism, he is noted for it but he too wasn't born when Elvis started in '54 and if he was he was in diapers. However he was here in Memphis a few years ago at a Stax Music celebration and he praised Elvis. So maybe it depends on who he's talking to.
(EIN notes, the reporter Jeff Miers obviously did not follow up on his brief research of song-lyrics - See EIN Article, 'Elvis Was NOT a Racist')
It bothers me greatly to read this uninformed crap by some in the media all these years later, they don't have a clue.
Millions of people of all races, creeds, religions from all over the world have visited Graceland because of what Elvis' music gave them, that to me speaks volumes more then all these so-called know it alls.
- Marty Lacker. |

EIN agrees with Marty since the article below was as always not evenly balanced in its presentation. The comment "Elvis doesn't come close to James Brown" is laughable in that they both were friends and equals and acknowledged each other's amazing musical power and influence. EIN has also contacted the newspaper and journalist asking for a proper response to why they published such a negative and badly researched article. As yet they have not replied. See EIN's "James Brown & Elvis were Soul Brothers" article.

Calling Elvis - songs that paint the portrait of a troubled King: Elvis Presley would have turned 78 this week. One wonders what he might have looked like today, had he not been such a troubled soul, one who abandoned his corporeal being in the bathroom of his by-then gloomy mansion in Memphis back in 1977.
Perhaps the jelly doughnuts and peanut butter and banana sandwiches would have caught up with him by now, even if the drugs and loneliness hadn't.
Would Elvis be fat, bald and squeezing into his jumpsuit to make the casino circuit as a nostalgia act? Or would he have taken a page from the Johnny Cash playbook, and returned to his roots, releasing stripped-down albums produced by Rick Rubin that caused critics to salivate and new generations to forgive him for those awful karate moves and onstage meltdowns? |
|
Speaking of “roots,” were those roots ever really the property of Elvis to begin with? Was he simply the first white man from the South to successfully appropriate the African-American music that surrounded him growing up, and turn it into cold hard cash and a rather pitiful movie career? Many would, and have, argued as much. Others see him as simply rock 'n' roll's first and greatest star.
Me? I think he was both of these things – a rip-off artist and, for a very brief period of time, a genius. It's the early stuff that gets me, the tunes the young hopeful tracked at Sun Studios in Memphis beneath the squinty-eyed gaze of Sam Phillips, who must have known immediately this truck-driving hick was onto something, even if all he initially wanted to do was record songs to make his mama proud.
Elvis went into the Army in 1958 at the peak of his commercial prowess, avoided any genuine hard time on his tour (EIN notes this is not true at all), and emerged somehow a changed man. He concentrated on making (mostly) terrible movies, lost contact with those debatable roots and only sporadically – the '68 “comeback special,” the “Memphis” album – released music on par with those earliest recordings. His story – which is likely to be told over and over again ad infinitum, just as it is echoed over and over again by desperate teen pop star after desperate teen pop star – is an American tragedy. Boy falls in love with music; boy develops serious talent; boy gets big break; boy becomes a mega rock star; boy makes his mama proud and his daddy rich; boy loses the plot; boy develops a taste for prescribed self-medication; boy feels lonely surrounded by a passel of hangers-on he mistakes for real friends; Elvis dies a lonely man in his bathroom.
In my opinion it's a pathetic tale, one made even moreso by the religious zealotry that still surrounds Elvis, insisting on his being much more myth than man. His significance as an artist who became the first rock star can't really be overestimated, but his importance as a figure in American music can be, and has been, for what feels like forever. In terms of musical influence, Elvis doesn't come close to James Brown, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Miles Davis or Bob Marley. To say nothing of the many bluesmen (and women) whose music he so artfully imitated, then sold to an American public largely oblivious to where that music came from. And yet, he lingers, because what he did, he did so incredibly well, particularly at the outset of his career. So we still celebrate his birthday, which feels somehow both sad and appropriate.
I compiled a playlist this week in honor of Elvis, comprising it of 10 songs that pay tribute to him in one form or another. They present, in many instances, an unflinching portrait of a fallen king. In others, they simply romanticize the myth, rather effectively, for better or worse.
“The King's Call,” Phil Lynott. The Thin Lizzy frontman was genuinely devastated by Presley's death – which might seem odd, considering the fact that he was a half Jamaican/half white Irish rogue-poet whose own music didn't sound much like Presley's at all. But in “King's Call,” Lynott beautifully romanticizes the Presley myth atop some stunning guitar work from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. It's interesting to see the parallels between Presley's tragic demise and Lynott's own, which took place 10 years later.
“Porcelain Monkey,” Warren Zevon. Zevon may be the finest sardonic scribbler to have emerged from the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s. He dealt with Presley rather mercilessly in this acerbic, hilarious tune from “Life'll Kill Ya”: “He was an accident waiting to happen/Most accidents happen at home/Maybe he should have gone out more often/Maybe he should have answered the phone/Hip-shakin' shoutin' in gold lamé/That's how he earned his regal sobriquet/Then he threw it all away/For a porcelain monkey.” Ouch!
“King of the Mountain,” Kate Bush. Bush brilliantly compares Presley to Charles Foster Kane in “Citizen Kane,” with this simultaneously tender and ominous tune. “Elvis are you out there somewhere/Looking like a happy man?/In the snow with Rosebud/And king of the mountain.”
“Elvis Has Just Left the Building,” Frank Zappa. It should surprise no one that Zappa had little patience with the idea of romanticizing Presley, who he generally saw as a marginally talented oaf with a drug problem and a messiah complex. Zappa skewers the King with this track from “Broadway the Hard Way”: “He gave away Cadillacs once in a while/Had sex in his underpants/Yes, he had style!/Bell-bottom jumpsuits?/That's them in a pile/But he don't need 'em now, 'Cause he's makin' Jesus smile!” Hey, somebody had to say it!
“Johnny Bye-Bye,” Bruce Springsteen. For Springsteen, Presley was both inspiration and cautionary tale. His death left its mark on Springsteen's writing, which then dealt with the myth of the King as a metaphor for the alienation that can come with stardom. “They found his body slumped up against the drain/with a whole lotta nuthin' runnin' through his veins/Bye bye, Johnny/Johnny, bye bye/You didn't have to die/You didn't have to die.” 'Nuff said. (EIN notes that in fact Bruce Springsteen is a major fan of Elvis stating that "Elvis is the first modern 21st century man. A precursor of the sexual revolution, the civil rights movement… He gave us a new way of being an American, a human being… You could not put the genie back in the bottle." He also noted "Elvis' music genius is the last music that everyone would agree on being great".)
“Fight the Power,” Public Enemy. Chuck D asserts that the deification of Presley is essentially a racist act and an attempt to rewrite American history in the white man's image. You can argue with him, if you like. Good luck with that. (EIN notes that again the journalist has done no real research about this glib
lyric and Chuck D's meaning)
“Tupelo,” Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Cave casts the birth of Presley as a Flannery O'Connor/Carson McCullers literary mash-up. Brilliant, and completely terrifying.
“Elvis on Velvet,” the Stray Cats. In which Brian Setzer decries the commodification of the King atop a smoking rockabilly tune.
“Elvis is Dead,” Living Colour. See Public Enemy, above.
“Calling Elvis,” Dire Straits. Here, Knopfler deftly cuts to the heart of the matter, regarding the tabloid frenzy of reported Elvis sightings around the time of the song's writing. “Calling Elvis/Is anybody home?/Calling Elvis/I'm here all alone/Did he leave the building?/Or can he come to the phone?/Calling Elvis/I'm here all alone.” (News, Source: Jeff Miers/Buffalo News Columnist)

Page, long considered the dean of Shreveport broadcasters, retired from KWKH Radio in 2005 after 65 years behind microphones.
It was during the 1950s when Page cemented his place in history by introducing Elvis Presley for the first time to a paying audience in 1954 at the Louisiana Hayride.
"Unbeknownst to me, it was what some since have called 'a seminal moment in the history of the world,'" Page told The Times several years ago in an interview. "He was a shy, well-mannered young man and just impressed the hell out of everybody."
Joey Kent, a local music and film producer and son of the late David Kent, a former owner of the Louisiana Hayride, worked with Page on projects concerning the radio show and noted that Page, an unusually modest man in broadcasting, downplayed his role in Elvis's early years.
"As Frank (would have been) the first to tell you, he fell into his most famous role, as the man who introduced Elvis to worldwide radio audiences quite by accident," Kent said. "Horace Logan generally introduced the well-known acts. It was through the fact that Elvis was an unknown that the job was pitched to Frank. Without much fanfare, he simply introduced Elvis by reporting what they knew, that he had a record out that had been getting some play on KWKH and other area radio stations and it had been getting a good response."
Page and the early Hayride provided an uncritical and forgiving environment that allowed Presley to mature as an artist and take his talent to a national level, Kent said. (News, Source: Elvis News/Shreveport Times)
Elvis and Aloha, Hawaii - looking back: In 1973 Elvis Presley would perform a concert that would be broadcast "live via satellite" from Hawaii to more than 40 countries. At a time when a long-distance telephone call was still a big deal, broadcasting anything "live via satellite" — let alone a full-length concert — was the stuff of science fiction.
It was big. It was unprecedented. It was Elvis.
For Presley, who had seemed bigger than life almost from the beginning of his career, the concert on Jan. 14, 1973, was the milestone that would mark the final years of his life. It underscored a career turnaround and served as a dramatic midpoint: Five years earlier his career was thought to have been over, and nearly five years later he was dead.
But in 1973, Presley was ready to do something big. The concert he called "Aloha from Hawaii" was it. And Hawaii was the perfect place to do it.
The logistics would be formidable anywhere, but to broadcast live at appropriate times in Asia and Europe meant the concert had to start at 12:30 a.m. in Hawaii. Almost as important, perhaps more so for Presley if not for his shrewd, number-crunching manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was the location itself.
Not only was Hawaii an exotic backdrop, but Elvis loved Hawaii and Hawaii loved Elvis.
The love affair started early. Hawaii — still an isolated American territory when Presley achieved national stardom in 1956 — embraced him with a fervor unsurpassed in many other parts of the country. A local write-in contest to win the |

hat the singer wore in his first movie, "Love Me Tender," drew 53,000 letters. The winner, 16-year-old Evelyn Hirai, received the prize from Hawaii deejay Tom Moffatt at the film's "teen premiere" in Honolulu.
"That was a big deal," Moffatt said. "Colonel Parker heard about this 53,000 response on the hat, and I think that's why he felt he should bring Elvis to Hawaii."
Less than a year later, Presley came to the islands for the first time in November 1957 to do a pair of concerts at the old Honolulu Stadium in Moiliili. (Reserved seats were $2.50 and $3.50.) Ron Jacobs, another legendary figure in island radio history, was the concert emcee.
"Hawaii was much more innocent then," Jacobs said. "Here we are, out in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden this guy shows up. The sound (of his music) was completely different, and he had the weirdest name I'd ever heard … but by the time he got here (for the concert), he had enough advance notice and enough hits that emceeing that show was just incredible."
A bond between Parker and the two Hawaii deejays lasted until Presley's death in 1977. Parker contacted the pair in 1959 shortly before the singer was discharged from the Army.
"If we got X signatures on a petition, Elvis would do his first concert in Hawaii after being released from the Army,"
|
|
A year later, Presley and Parker learned that funding for the uncompleted USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor had dried up. They stepped forward and offered to do a benefit concert when, as Honolulu journalist Eddie Sherman puts it, "no one else was interested."
Presley and Parker picked up all the production costs of doing the show so all the money from ticket sales and commemorative programs would go to the fundraiser.
The concert pushed the project forward. Held on March 25, 1961, at the Navy's Bloch Arena, it raised $62,000, which included a $5,000 donation from Presley and Parker.
Elvis' relationship with Hawaii became even tighter in the early '60s when he filmed parts of three films here.
"Blue Hawaii," filmed in 1961, was a beautiful showcase for the new 50th state with scenes shot at Hanauma Bay, Tantalus, Ala Moana Beach Park and the Coco Palms Hotel on Kauai. It was one of Presley's most successful films and produced one of his best movie soundtrack albums.
Ten years later in November 1972, Presley followed three sold-out performances at the Honolulu International Center (now the Blaisdell Arena) with a news conference to announce his satellite-live concert. He told reporters it would benefit the Kui Lee Cancer Fund, named for the late Hawaii songwriter. RCA President Rocco Laginestra, who joined Presley, Parker and Lee's widow in the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Rainbow Rib Room, said admission to the show would be by donation only.
Sherman said "Hawaii Five-0" star Jack Lord donated $1,000 for his ticket. But some folks are said to have gotten in for a dime.
The concert raised $75,000, which included a $1,000 donation from the singer himself.
Thousands of fans got a preview of the show when organizers allowed them to watch the Jan. 12 dress rehearsal as long as they made a donation to the Kui Lee fund. Fans stormed into the arena when the doors opened and waited two hours for the rehearsal to begin.
The real concert drew 6,000 people, which filled the arena because a large "We Love Elvis" sign covered about 3,500 seats.
2013 Hawaii Govenor Neil Abercrombie, a UH teaching assistant in 1973, doesn't remember how much he paid for his ticket, but guesses it wasn't much.
"Obviously, with people like me going, I mean it was cheap," he said. Abercrombie remembers the event as "just amazing." Presley, wearing his iconic "American Eagle" jumpsuit, tossed the $10,000 cape into the crowd at the end of his performance and then flashed a shaka to the audience.
Presley, 38 at the time, also understood the significance of the satellite-live 1973 concert. Moffatt, who interviewed the singer at Honolulu Airport when he arrived for the show, said Presley told him, "Tom, this is the biggest thing I've ever done."

Expansion plans revealed for Elvis’ childhood home: Two new statutes of Elvis Presley will be placed at his birthplace in Tupelo. "We’re putting an emphasis on Elvis the boy instead of Elvis the entertainer," said birthplace chairman Henry Dodge. "Elvis the boy is our story."
Dodge said the statues and a nine-table picnic area that can seat more than 50 people and will include a fireplace and more parking are in phase two of the expansion. The second phase is expected to cost from $750,000 to $1 million. Dodge said fundraising will begin soon.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the plans were unveiled during the local celebration for the late rock ‘n’ roll icon on the day he would have turned 78.
Presley was born in Tupelo on Jan. 8, 1935, and moved to Memphis with his parents at age 13. He was 42 when he died Aug. 16, 1977.
A bronze statue of 11-year-old Elvis sitting on a milk crate will be placed at the overlook behind the birthplace. Behind him will be a bronze statue of Elvis the entertainer in full regalia, including a cape, with his arms outstretched and head tilted toward the sky. That’s the pose Elvis took when he closed his concerts.
"It’s not just the end of the concert, but the end of a life, looking up at the heavens," Dodge said.
It will be a large statue "because Elvis is bigger than life," he said.
Both statues will be placed in bronze soil to signify both the boy and the entertainer came from the same roots.
There is already a statue of Elvis, called "Elvis at 13," (right) at the Birthplace.
Phase one of work at the Presley birthplace included a 126-seat indoor theater, an amphitheater, extra parking and more. A face-lift for the gift shop will be completed in the coming weeks, Dodge said.

Actress Gloria Pall Dies: Gloria Pall, whose long sexy legs were seen framing Elvis' face in the 1957 MGM film, 'Jailhouse Rock' has died age 85. She died Dec. 30 of heart failure at a Burbank hospital, her son Jefferson Kane told press.
Gloria Pall, was the sultry hostess of a 1950' Los Angeles TV show that was cancelled because her character's sexy poses and flirtatious comments were deemed too hot for television.
In 1954 she was cast by KABC-TV to introduce the romantic movie. Appearing as "Voluptua," the statuesque Pall welcomed viewers with a breathy coo to her boudoir and tell them to "Relax, take off your shoes, loosen your ties."
During each show, she would caress a bearskin rug and made costume changes behind a translucent screen. As she signed off, clad only in a men's pajama top, she kissed the camera goodbye.
The station cancelled the show after just seven weeks due to pressure from religious and parent groups. But all the protests attracted national media attention.
Pall said her character was simply being suggestive. She described her over-the-top character as "corny not porny." She had a brief acting career which included her "sexy leg" part with Elvis in 'Jailhouse Rock'.
Gloria later became a L.A real estate agent but she was something, Elvis Express radio's Joe Krein interviewed her for E.E.R once & she was a Tiger. She loved Elvis & only had good things to say about him..... Go HERE to the interview.

Elvis Aloha an Historical Event: On January 14, 1973, Elvis Presley made history as the first solo entertainer to hold a live concert broadcast internationally via satellite. More than a billion people from more than 40 countries across Asia and Europe tuned in to watch "Aloha from Hawaii." On NPR's 'All Things Considered' host Jacki Lyden talked to Elvis aficionados, including fans who witnessed the rock 'n' roll king when he took the crown to be a true worldwide phenomenon.
Dana Suzuki-Culbertson: The night I went to see Elvis, I went with my mother. I was just 17 at the time. And I remember sitting up, and the moment I saw him with my binoculars, I was in such awe that I stopped and I was just staring at my mom, saying: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. And she told me: Stop looking at me and look at stage and watch. When he first came out on stage, you know, they start off with these drums: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And then da-da-da, da-da-da, and then out he comes, you know, "See See Rider."
You know, I was in my own world, swooning and wanting all that too. I just loved him.
Governor Neil Abercrombie: It was 12:30 a.m. when it started. The place was packed, about 6,000-plus people in our little arena here. And he was in his, you know, his white cape, and he had his semi-karate moves. And he sang at least 20, 25 songs in an hour.
He was a phenomenon. And we're talking about it 40 years later. You're not going to have the Justin Bieber world satellite concert 40 years from now, you know, or Beyonce or something like that. These are passing phenomenon. Presley was singular in that way. The word charisma was made for him."
|
|
- The Fortieth anniversary celebrations of the concert are planned from Memphis to Honolulu with a rebroadcast of the 1973 show. If you're lucky enough to get there, you'll be joining Governor Abercrombie at the arena where it all took place on January 14th. You, too, can say what Elvis might say if he were there - "Aloha from Hawaii."

The Ranch - A place of importance. The ranch is where Elvis could escape from being ‘Elvis Presley’ for a short while. It is where he spent time with friends and family enjoying his love of horses and the outdoors in fact the place was so special to him that he spent a portion of his honeymoon there.

UPDATED - 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' FTD In-Depth Review: 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' was first released in April 1976 but only reached #41 in the charts. It only featured 10 tracks, recorded at Elvis' Graceland home among them 'Hurt', 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and 'For The Heart'.
BUT if Elvis was "Raised on Rock" then why was 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' such a middle-of-the-road quagmire of syrupy overdubs and tepid songs? This really wasn’t the album Elvis fans had been waiting for.
But if the single ‘Hurt/For The Heart’ was supposed to be the promo for the album, then fans were surely disappointed. Even the cover pretended it was a live concert album - the Colonel must have been desperate! It is certainly one of Elvis’ worst albums.

Elvis ETA crowned King of Europe: Elvis would have been 78 today - and somewhere he is laughing as Midlands-based impersonator Gordon Elvis wins the annual European Elvis Championships in Birmingham, the day before his 78th birthday.
Gordon Elvis was named the best Elvis Presley impersonator in Europe at an annual championship held each year to coincide with the birthday of the "King of Rock 'n' Roll".
The Malta-born impersonator, who changed his name to Gordon Elvis by deed poll to honour the late rock 'n' roll singer, improved on the third place position he achieved at the European Elvis Championships in 2012.
He beat fellow impersonators Ben Thompson – who came runner-up for the second year in a row – and Patrick Byrne – who came third – at Europe's largest annual Elvis tribute artist contest convention, held in Birmingham.
"He did a fantastic Vegas set and he had everything going on. It was just like being in Vegas. Gordon is a worthy winner, and European champion.”
Gordon Elvis beat 250 other entrants to the world champion Elvis Presley tribute artist title at a convention in Memphis, Tennessee last year. For his European award he won a cash prize, a holiday to Memphis and a jumpsuit made by the creators of Presley's outfits.
Had he not died of a heart attack in 1977, Presley would have celebrated his 78th birthday today January 8.

‘Elvis On Tour’ E-book Review: ‘Elvis On Tour’ is EPE’s first official E-book subtitled ‘An exploration of Elvis’ 1972 Spring Tour’. You can download the Kindle App to your home p/c and while there are plenty of other E-books out there about Elvis, this is the first "official one" and so is probably an indication of future releases.
Released in August last year EIN thought it worth waiting to review it in comparison to the other fabulous SONY/EPE release of 2012 ‘Prince From Another Planet’.
Utilising the resources of the Graceland Archives, EPE promised readers would get backstage access to the 15-city, 15-day tour with rare photos of Elvis on stage, press clippings and reviews of the concert tour, and an up-close look at artefacts from both the actual tour and the awarding winning “Elvis on Tour” documentary film.
Also an in-depth look at the tour schedule, song lists from each concert and the jumpsuits Elvis wore on stage.

'Hot Love In A Long, Cold Winter' - New Import CD: Out shortly is the new Straight Arrow release “Hot Love In A Long, Cold Winter”, which contains the St. Petersburg Feb 14 and Columbia Feb 18, 1977 concerts from newly obtained original audience recorded cassettes which both have surprisingly good sound. The Elvis tour in February of that year was affected in various ways by the weather conditions, which sometimes resulted in delays at airports and illness among the musicians and crew members. Presley himself was in less than stellar condition, and complained of a sore throat on some nights. Elvis gained some weight since the last tour, and the manic feel of those final December nights was now gone, but from February 14, he was in good voice for all remaining shows of his tour, and he even included rarities like ‘Release Me’ and ‘Blueberry Hill’.
A large chunk of the February 14 show and 2 tracks from February 18 were released from a soundboard sources, but we feel that these audience recorded tapes makes for a more entertaining and exciting listening experience.
|
|
Note: The February 18, 1977 show was released in 1992 (Elvis Release Me In Concert) by the Peaf label, which was taken from an inferior source. If you liked our previous outing, 'Chicago Double-Strike', you will enjoy this new release, too.

Elvis Portfolio Briefcase on EBay- Price Drop & Bidding Now On: Marty Lacker was with and close to Elvis Presley for twenty years and he is now selling Elvis' Personal Black Leather Portfolio Briefcase
Marty Lacker tells how a little over 40 years ago Elvis was shopping at Whitehaven Plaza and picked up a black leather portfolio with handles and handed it to Marty. Marty thought Elvis wanted to buy it for himself but as usual Elvis had other ideas which was probably a spur of the moment one. After buying a few more items in the store they returned to Graceland where Marty handed the portfolio to Elvis. Elvis said it wasn't for him but he bought it for Marty because he liked the way it looked and thought Marty could use it for his then music business.
Marty has now decided to sell the portfolio because he is doing something for his grandkids and is only asking for the amount he needs to take care of that project.

Elvis Birthday Celebration in Sydney, Australia: On the night of Elvis Presley's 78th birthday, celebrate with ‘She Is The King’ at Sydney’s Basement club. Jacqueline Feilich, aka She is The King, is the only woman ever to be selected by EPE to enter the worldwide search for The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist in its inaugural 2007 Contest in Elvis' birthplace - Tupelo, Mississippi USA.
"Jacqueline is the most unique Elvis Tribute Artist in the world and not just because she's female. It's because she's female and does her own interpretation, using her 'own' voice, which accurately and convincingly channels that of Elvis Presley's. Her singles "Edge of Reality", "Viva Las Vegas" and "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" bring us Elvis like we've never heard before. Her renditions of these songs and many tracks on her debut album "Comeback" are the most unique interpretations of Presley classics ever done in the ETA world. She sings with a raw emotional power that would cripple any contemporary in comparison.
For one night only, join She Is The King as she takes over The Basement, with her band The Memphis Flash -at The Basement, 7 Macquarie Place, Circular Quay, Sydney.

Elvis Still Sexually Suggestive after All these Years: An extraordinary Odd-Spot story about Elvis (last deemed "too dangerously sexy for children" nearly 60 years ago) when this week a Utah High School has cancelled a high-school drama deeming it too sexually suggestive.
Elvis Presley, whose gyrating hips caused an uproar in the 1950s, has become the centre of a controversy at a Utah high school where a parent complaint prompted officials to revise a musical featuring the music of the late "king of rock 'n' roll."
Presley warbles over a sweetheart whose "lips are like a volcano that's hot" in his 1957 song, "I'm proud to say she's my buttercup. I'm in love. I'm all shook up."
Presley's song lyrics and a suggestive scene were deemed offensive by school administrators in a Salt Lake City suburb.
Rehearsals for "All Shook Up" were cancelled before the play was made ready for production at Herriman High School.
The Jordan School District said on Thursday the reworked production of "All Shook Up" at Herriman High School allowed it to avoid cancelling the show, as it had announced on Wednesday it was doing.
A parent complained about a song in the play and about scenes the parent contended were too sexually suggestive.
"All Shook Up" features the music of Presley and a story based on William Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night."

The bulk of the book recounts the eight days Adams spent with Elvis in Memphis later that year just before a September 1956 homecoming concert in Tupelo, Miss. Elvis was born in Tupelo and lived there until he was 13, when the family moved to Memphis.

Elvis In Vancouver August 1957: In its 100-year history, the Vancouver Sun has run a few questionable music reviews. But the most bizarre review might have been John Kirkwood's over-the-top critique of Elvis Presley's show at Empire Stadium on August 31, 1957. The rare photo shows Elvis with fan Wendy Braine backstage at the Empire Stadium.
Some excerpts -"It was like watching a demented army swarm down the hillside to do battle in the plain when those frenzied teenagers stormed the field. Elvis and his music played a small part in the dizzy circus. The big show was provided by Vancouver teenagers, transformed into writhing, frenzied idiots of delight by the savage jungle beat music.
A hard, bitter core of teenage troublemakers turned Elvis Presley's one-night stand at Empire Stadium into the most disgusting exhibition of mass hysteria and lunacy this city has ever witnessed. Saturday night's madness was not something Vancouver should be very proud of. With something over 16,000 at the stadium, it was billed as the largest theatrical entertainment attraction in Western Canada.
Don't kid yourself. This was not entertainment. Not when children as young as nine, unhinge their hips and fling themselves into wild orgies of lunatic ecstasy. Not when boys and girls alike spit into policemen's faces for the sheer thrill of defying law and order.
Elvis wearing a shimmering gold jacket and black pants, staggered across the stage like a drunk picking his way home on New Year's morning. He glazed his eyes, twisted his youthful face in a sullen sneer, swivelled his hips, dropped drunkenly to his knees and threw himself into more bumps and grinds than the girly show has seen for years. He made love to the microphone and teenage girls in the crowd reached out to him."

'Elvis In Concert 1945/1977' book in "Troublezine": The Italian Elvis book by Sebastiano Cecere 'ELVIS in concert 1945-1977' has recently been reviewed by the Italian Troublezine site - the author is also interviewed about the book.
The article is in Italian written by Ricky Brit Pop and includes the following...
"The beautiful book 'Elvis In Concert 1945 - 1977' is a real journey, concert by concert, describing all the performances.. all the songs, the jumpsuits, the musicians and the audience of nearly every date with in-depth stories curious anecdotes, memorabilia and more or less known facts of Elvis' artistic career.
The 800 pages may seem a lot, but in fact they transport you to that time, front of stage and behind the scenes.
Everything is beautifully described by Sebastiano Cecere who founded and directed The Elvis Presley Fan Club of Italy for the last 25 years."
GO HERE to the Italian review and Interview with Sebastiano Cecere.
In our own EIN review we noted...
"It is not often that EIN reviews foreign language books about Elvis, however, once in a while a book is released which stands out from the crowd. Sebastiano Cecere's, ELVIS in concert 1945-1977, a mammoth 794 pages examination of Elvis' "live" stage appearances is one such book, albeit essentially with Italian text!
Apart from its staggering number of pages, the book measures a large-sized 29cmX21cm / 12"x10"."

Elvis and The Beatles most-forged celebrity signatures of 2012: Elvis Presley and The Beatles top the list of most-forged celebrity signatures in 2012, with less than half of their autographs for sale certified as genuine, authenticators PSA/DNA noted last week.
The King and The Fab Four who topped the list two years ago when it was last released, joined notable figures such as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and late pop star Michael Jackson on the list of most-forged celebrity signatures.
Late American astronaut Neil Armstrong landed at No. 3 on the list, after fake Armstrong signatures rose significantly after his death in July.
One reason forgeries of Armstrong’s autograph soared was that he rarely signed for fans during his life.
"Armstrong is someone who is very conscious of the value of his own autograph," Orlando said. "Even before he passed away he was very tough to get...It really heightens the level of his market."
Secretaries and assistants responding to huge volumes of fan mail
|
|
are one reason for fake signatures floating through the marketplace, said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles.
"Back in the day, the kids would write to the movie studios, there was absolutely no financial gain 50 years ago and secretaries and assistants just wanted to make them happy. A lot of times people stumble upon an old box of signed photographs in grandma’s attic and don’t know they’re forged."
"A good rule of thumb is to compare it a signed contract," she said. "Sometimes (celebrities) would have secretaries or other sign photos and letters but they couldn’t have a contract signed by a proxy."

'Paradise City' New Import CD: Touchdown Productions proudly presents another audience recording of Elvis' concert February 18, 1977 in Columbia, South Carolina. It's represented in the best possible soundquality from a newer source than what was used on the old release "Release Me" from 1992.
The publicity states that - Up above it is possibly the best concert from the first tour in 1977 and without a doubt one of best concerts he gave in 1977!
EIN's friend CiscoKing notes "The show is really not bad and comes from the overall best tour from 1977. Elvis and the band are in a good mood and we have an interesting set list with the highlights being Release Me and Hurt . Also good renditions of Trying To get To You or That`s All Right. The show is okay regarding all the circumstances in 1977.
The previous bootleg "Release Me" was one of the rarer imports, so this may be an interesting upgrade.

Stating that we thought 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' was "certainly one of Elvis’ worst albums" generated some very interesting feedback from EIN readers. Our review is now updated with your thoughts. |
NOW UPDATED - 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' FTD In-Depth Review: 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' was first released in April 1976 but only reached #41 in the charts.
In hindsight we now understand more about Elvis’ depressed emotional state at the time and the difficulties involved in getting him enthusiastic enough to record at all.
But if the single ‘Hurt/For The Heart’ was supposed to be the promo for the album, then fans were surely disappointed. Even the cover pretended it was a live concert album - the Colonel must have been desperate! It is certainly one of Elvis’ worst albums.

FTD December Releases Out Now: Two new FTD CD releases are out now.
- '3000 South Paradise Road' - A two disc 7" "Classic Album" type release with 16-page booklet. It takes a closer look at Elvis’ engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in August of 1972. The main disc is the dinner concert on August 12, and the second disc is culled from the rehearsals on August 4th, the date of the opening of the engagement.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972.
A short review of '3000 Paradise Road' on FECC notes, "Great covershots, great booklet with great photos, and not one in a jumpsuit. Those "casual" (ok, not too casual) clothes Elvis wore on stage then made him look really good. The rehearsal CD is a nice experience as an eavesdropper. Sure elvis does not use his complete vocal range nor does he put a lot of power in the rehearsed songs, but still most of the songs sound good enough for his stage performance. Furthermore it is surprising to me that he did do some songs that really did not |
|
need any rehearsal because they have been played regularly since at least the beginning of the year (1972). "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" is a good performance and the band does it well rehearsed. Elvis jokes around at the beginning of "Faded Love" but it still sounds good. The big ballads get their usual lenghty treatment and they sure meant something to him ('What Now My Love', 'My Way') although the sound is an Audience Recording it is really okay. After all, this is a piece of Elvis history that fans would loved to have witnessed.
The Concert CD truly is Full Blast. A great 1972 double." - Jambalaya FECC.
- 'Back In Memphis' - Is also released - the Classic Album double-album series first volume from the 1969 sessions in Memphis with the release of 'Back In Memphis' featuring 'Suspicious Minds' as a bonus track. FTD 115 (506020-975050) |
