- EIN presents SONY FTD Elvis CD news for 2012 -

Monday 17 December 2012

'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' FTD In-Depth Review: 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' was first released in April 1976 but only reached #41 in the charts. It only featured 10 tracks, recorded at Elvis' Graceland home among them 'Hurt', 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and 'For The Heart'.
BUT if Elvis was "Raised on Rock" then why was 'From Elvis Presley Boulevard' such a middle-of-the-road quagmire of syrupy overdubs and tepid songs? This really wasn’t the album Elvis fans had been waiting for.
In hindsight we now understand more about Elvis’ depressed emotional state at the time and the difficulties involved in getting him enthusiastic enough to record at all.
But if the single ‘Hurt/For The Heart’ was supposed to be the promo for the album, then fans were surely disappointed. Even the cover pretended it was a live concert album - the Colonel must have been desperate! It is certainly one of Elvis’ worst albums.

FTD December Releases Out Now: Two new FTD CD releases are out now.
- '3000 South Paradise Road' - A two disc 7" "Classic Album" type release with 16-page booklet. It takes a closer look at Elvis’ engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in August of 1972. The main disc is the dinner concert on August 12, and the second disc is culled from the rehearsals on August 4th, the date of the opening of the engagement.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972.
A short review of '3000 Paradise Road' on FECC notes, "Great covershots, great booklet with great photos, and not one in a jumpsuit. Those "casual" (ok, not too casual) clothes Elvis wore on stage then made him look really good. The rehearsal CD is a nice experience as an eavesdropper. Sure elvis does not use his complete vocal range nor does he put a lot of power in the rehearsed songs, but still most of the songs sound good enough for his stage performance. Furthermore it is surprising to me that he did do some songs that really did not

need any rehearsal because they have been played regularly since at least the beginning of the year (1972). "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" is a good performance and the band does it well rehearsed. Elvis jokes around at the beginning of "Faded Love" but it still sounds good. The big ballads get their usual lenghty treatment and they sure meant something to him ('What Now My Love', 'My Way') although the sound is an Audience Recording it is really okay. After all, this is a piece of Elvis history that fans would loved to have witnessed.
The Concert CD truly is Full Blast. A great 1972 double."
- Jambalaya FECC.

- 'Back In Memphis' - Is also released - the Classic Album double-album series first volume from the 1969 sessions in Memphis with the release of 'Back In Memphis' featuring 'Suspicious Minds' as a bonus track. FTD 115 (506020-975050) (SEE cover pictures below)

'Prince From Another Planet’ In-Depth Review: Of all the live concert recordings released by RCA during Elvis Presley’s lifetime, none carried the historic significance of his long-awaited New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and now the two RCA recorded concerts and newly found fan-filmed video footage been released in one deluxe package for the 40th Anniversary Edition.

"PRINCE? MAKE THAT KING!" - Go here as Arjan Deelen reviews the new Sony ‘Prince From Another Planet’ package.

It’s been a while since a new Elvis release generated as much publicity as ‘Prince From Another Planet’ - But is it as good as our high expectations?

The '3000 South Paradise Road' new FTD: New flyers have been produced for the '3000 South Paradise Road' new August 1972 special double FTD release.
EIN has been informed that the audio from the August 12 Dinner Show soundboard has been vastly improved upon from its original 'Blazing Into The Darkness' bootleg release. Elvis was very focused and motivated at this engagement which is a surprise at his seventh Las Vegas season.

Our friend Rock Legend also reports that the rehearsal CD is pretty decent audio and better than expected.
Treats are a very relaxed ‘Blueberry Hill’, ‘My Babe’ with a very different James Burton guitar solo not heard in other versions and ‘True Love Travels On A Gravel Road’ is not the rehearsal that we know but a better version, closer to the original release.
Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos have collected some stunning and rare photos (EIN notes - Isn’t it great to see Elvis not in jumpsuit for a change!) plus tons of memorabilia and documents which make the whole package a real winner.

Don’t miss out on this one.

FTD December Releases: Three new FTD releases for December.
As with '48 Hours To Memphis' this release has been prepared by Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos, who once again has done a fabulous job of collecting information and materials for the project. There will be additional information in the next few weeks.
'3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972. As disc 2 is captured on a personal tape recorder, the sonic quality is below standards, but historical significance more than compensates for its audio limitations. Disc 1 is a soundboard recording.
Recorded live at Vegas Hilton August 12, 1972. Dinner show.

This is a great Las Vegas dinner show from August with Elvis in a confident mood, giving excellent performances on almost every song, and enjoying being back on stage. Elvis wore a cool range of two piece suits and was up for lots of karate action and with lots of energy. Previously released as the bootleg 'Blazing Into The Darkness'.
'My Way' was new and Elvis makes a few humorous cracks about not wanting 'My Way' associated with his own personal life "...the end is near and all that jazz, I haven't even ate it up and spit it out yet, I'm still chewing on it!"
The setlist is a great selection (see below) and the sound quality is excellent. Remastered in 2012 it will be a great FTD double-pack.

2. The 1974 UK album 'Hits Of The 70's' is also released as a "Classic Album" double 7" release.
The original 12 track album included many songs that had only been available in the UK as singles ('I'm Leavin'', 'Rags To Riches', 'I've Lost You' etc) and was a firm favourite with English fans. Maybe this rather odd choice for release is because FTD's Roger Semon is English and has fond memories of this album. At the time it featured no hits later than 1972 due to the dodgy RCA buy-out deal in 1973.

Now FTD release their expanded version with 24 Elvis 1970's single A & B sides plus the bonus track 'My Way' (which was released after Elvis' death). For once the album does not feature any outtakes or unreleased material.
It comes with a 12-page booklet featuring the UK and US single sleeves plus chart information and historic release notes.

'A Boy From Tupelo' FTD Tracklist Announced: FTD have finally announced the tracklisting for upcoming deluxe SUN book set.
"A Boy From Tupelo - Complete 53-55 Recordings" includes for the first time in one collection every known Elvis Presley SUN master and outtake, plus two private records Elvis paid for with his own money, as well as thrilling radio and concert performances from the period. This 3 CD package features 10 previously-unreleased cuts.
All audio has been re-mastered and restored as best we could, but Disc 3 has pretty rough audio.
FTD has noted that the 3 CD package features 10 previously-unreleased cuts. EIN had been informed unofficially that the following songs have been mastered for the project. 'Little Mama', 'Heartbreaker', 'Heart of Stone', 'Blue Moon of Kentucky', 'Shake, Rattle & Roll' plus the already announced by Ernst 'That’s All Right' from Meridian. The studio outtakes feature more of 'When It Rains, It Really Pours’, How Do You Think I Feel' (Sun rehearsal) as well as new versions of 'Harbor Lights'.
Surprisingly this is the first official RCA release of Elvis' original 'That's All Right' without the added RCA echo.

Elvis dealers are asking for final orders for the new deluxe book - FTD are finalising numbers with their distributors. Order now if you don’t want to miss out on this long-awaited Ernst Jorgensen SUN project.

'Prince From Another Planet' More Details: A glimpse at the new Madison Square Garden 40th Anniversary release. Looking at a career that had more artistic and commercial triumphs than most in the 20th century, one could be forgiven for thinking that Elvis’ run of four shows at Madison Square Garden on June 9-11, 1972 was just another one of these big events. But for Elvis, it wasn’t. Back in February, in his Las Vegas hotel suite, he took his friend, singer Tom Jones to one side, and shared his concerns. Elvis’ main anxiety stemmed from his legendary appearance on The Milton Berle Show on June 6, 1956 that was deemed ‘scandalous’ by most of the media who voiced outrage over his vulgar gyrating performances.
The New York media was definitely in the forefront of these attacks.
However, Any reticence Elvis had would soon be ruled out as he became the first artist ever to sell-out four shows at the 20,000-seat arena.
Elvis had never played in NYC before, except for television appearances on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show, The Steve Allen Show and Ed Sullivan’s Toast Of The Town. The stars of the day flocked to see him. George Harrison meets Elvis backstage; John Lennon and Paul Simon are rumored to be there, a young Bruce Springsteen, Art Garfunkel and David Bowie are all in attendance. But for the sold-out Garden, there is only one star that matters. Most fans have been waiting a lifetime to see their Elvis, and, as he enters from stage right, he is greeted with an explosive roar that has been held in check from 1956 until his New York debut.
On June 9, A press conference was held at the New York Hilton at 4 p.m. In eager anticipation, photographers, TV crews and newspaper men filled the room. Dressed in a stunning blue outfit and gold belt, Elvis entered the room flanked by his father Vernon and manager Colonel Tom Parker. He opened by stating: "I plead innocent of all charges," setting a humorous and disarming tone during the 20-minute encounter. With boyish charm, he made fun of his past, saying how tame he was compared to present-day performers. With sincerity, he avoided questions of a

controversial or political nature by stating: "I’m just an entertainer." The press and critics were ecstatic: LIKE A PRINCE FROM ANOTHER PLANET screamed the The New York Times headline, complete with rave reviews, following Elvis’ four sold-out shows. Elvis had FINALLY made it to New York, he conquered NYC and proved beyond doubt that he was truly THE KING OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!

'From Hawaii to Las Vegas' FTD CD Review: 'From Hawaii To Las Vegas’ is from a previously unreleased cassette recording of Elvis’ January 25 1973 dress rehearsal for his January/February Las Vegas Hilton season.
The rough audio quality is more than compensated for by the fascinating insight into how Elvis worked in order to create his shows. With little talk, and a lot of music, we are invited to a first row presentation of what Elvis had in mind, and yet he decided to change the repertoire the next day.

Among the many songs is "Separate Ways" a song that Elvis chose to never perform in public - as well as a stunning "Steamroller Blues" and the fabulously rare 'I’m Leavin’ It All Up To You'

Go here as EIN contributor David Tinson checks out this new FTD and discovers if it is a good as hoped for.

'Another Saturday Night' FTD Review: Mid 1975 found Elvis back in good form and having fun on stage. Slimmed down and looking great in his new Indian Feather jump-suit Elvis seemed rejuvenated and happy to be back on stage.
As the Memphis Commercial Appeal commented … "It didn't seem to matter what Elvis sang, the audience went wild every time he moved and he made if clear he knew what was turning them on."
FTD has now released the Shreveport June 7th 1975 Evening Show - a previously UNISSUED performance, even on bootleg.
While the set-list may seem a little familiar, Elvis sure knows how to put on a crowd-pleasing show.

'From Memphis To Hollywood' FTD book preview: Although the publication has been delayed, here is a marvellous YouTube preview of this fabulous looking book.
Written by David English the book takes Elvis from Memphis back to the movie making business in Hollywood, and the actual production of G.I. BLUES. As with its predecessor, the book is filled to the brim with great, rare and informative photos and documents.

'Elvis By Request' Australia's "Best Of" CD outsmarts 'I Am An Elvis Fan'!: EIN has now had confirmed that the Australian 'Best Of' collection will be a 40 track double CD compilation which has (possibly!) been in the planning stage before the 'I Am An Elvis Fan' international version!
Australians will also be able to select their favourites to be included on the 40 track set from every Elvis Master.
This is also going to be promoted via the 'Golden Oldies' type radio stations and with TV promotion as well. Thus hitting, and making a mark, on the 'General Public' rather that the EPE subscribed Elvis fan.
The concept is to wake up the "General Public" to Elvis’ on going popularity as the 35th Anniversary approaches.

The voting promotion is from June 4 until Friday July 13.
Pre-order the CD online before July 13 and your name will be included with other Australian fans on an exclusive fan edition poster – included with the CD.
Fans outside Australia may order the CD unfortunately only residents of Australia will receive the exclusive poster.
The poor timing we noted below was just an unfortunate slip.

‘From Hawaii To Las Vegas’ (Unreleased 1973 Rehearsal)- The new 5" digi pack release ‘From Hawaii To Las Vegas’ is from a previously unreleased cassette recording of Elvis’ January 25 1973 dress rehearsal for his January/February Las Vegas Hilton season. The rough audio quality is more than compensated by the fascinating insight into how Elvis worked in order to create his shows. With little talk, and a lot of music, we are invited to a first row presentation of what Elvis had in mind, and yet he decided to change the repertoire the next day. Among the many songs is "Separate Ways" – rehearsed with and without the orchestra - a song that Elvis chose to never perform in public. This will be a fabulous collectors’ release.
The one track ‘I'm Leavin' It All Up To You’ was previously released on the FTD ‘Stage Rehearsal’ and was one of the best tracks on that compilation. The audio quality was pretty good as we noted in our review "Elvis tries it out in rehearsal and it’s another spontaneous Elvis moment, luckily captured in pretty good sound – the best quality bonus track here."
Tracklist: 1) Something 2) You Gave Me A Mountain 3) Steamroller Blues 4) My Way 5) Love Me 6) It’s Over 7) Blue Suede Shoes, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry 9) Welcome To My World 10) I’ll Remember You 11) Long Tall Sally/Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On 12) An American Trilogy 13) A Big Hunk O’ Love 14) I’m Leavin’ It All Up To You 15) Faded Love 16) I Can’t Stop Loving You 17) Separate Ways

‘From Memphis To Hollywood’ Book: Hot on the heels of WELCOME HOME ELVIS comes its sequel, another Flaming Star production written by David English, which brings Elvis from Memphis back to the movie making business in Hollywood, and the actual production of G.I. BLUES. As with WELCOME HOME ELVIS the book features an album – this time not surprising the newly found original mono LP master for G.I. BLUES. As with its predecessor, the book is filled to the brim with great, rare and informative photos and documents.

'A Boy From Tupelo - Complete 53-55 Recordings' More News: Elvis collectors' holy-grail 'Little Mama' is included. Out in AUGUST 2012 the deluxe book + 3CD set has been announced for August release. For over five years “Follow That Dream” /Sony Elvis Committee president Ernst Jorgensen has been working on the Definitive Elvis At Sun Records & book, which is possibly the most ambitious project of his entire career. The Genesis of rock n roll has to be the combination of Elvis and the Memphis based Sun Records Company, and at last this outstanding labour of love is about to be published.
This will be no ordinary volume of facts and figures. It will be a massive superlative Elvis Presley production including the rarest of pictures, recording data, the real story behind Elvis’ time at Sun with unique Elvis artifacts, photographs, together with a companion of Elvis Sun recordings on THREE CDs which will excite your senses.
FTD has noted that the 3 CD package features 10 previously-unreleased cuts. EIN has been informed unofficially that the following songs has been mastered for the project. 'Little Mama', 'Heartbreaker', 'Heart of Stone', 'Blue Moon of Kentucky', 'Shake, Rattle & Roll' plus the already announced by Ernst 'That’s All Right' from Meridian.
The 'Little Mama' acetate audio which was believed to be unrepairable, is better than expected.
The studio outtakes feature more of 'When It Rains, It Really Pours’. The official full tracklisting has not yet been announced.

The accompanying book is, in essence, a fully-illustrated travelogue. It thoughtfully details the birth of Elvis' career through.

'Our Memories of Elvis Vols 1,2 &3' FTD CD Review: Ernst Jorgensen originally said that FTD were unlikely to release this Joan Deary 1979 "Pure Elvis Sound" concept on CD stating, "I think we have more important things to do."
However FTD have discovered 18 Previously Unreleased "Pure Elvis Sound" tracks and in 2012 have now issued a stunning 38 track compilation gathering up all the audio engineer Dick Bogert created "Pure Elvis Sound" masters. And what a great concept it is.
Most of the selected tracks were Elvis' Master versions with some but not all of the overdubs removed - and were unique. These tracks were almost never the "Undubbed Masters" that are now being released on FTD.
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley digs deep, providing an incredibly in-depth review - examining every track in detail and discovers The Good and The Disappointing...

'On Stage' FTD Classic Album Review: The long-awaited double-CD Classic Album version of RCA's 1970's 'On Stage' - and featuring three officially unreleased LIVE concerts. Recorded in Las Vegas February 1970, the original album was released in June 1970 and for Elvis fans the album was an absolute stunner showcasing some fabulous original material.
A few months ago EIN reviewed ‘ReBooked’ the deluxe 4CD bootleg set of Elvis’ Jan/ Feb 1970 Vegas season. Now FTD follows up with a marvellous "Classic Album" version that very cleverly matches the bootleg release giving us 25 brand new unreleased performances.
"I’m about to lose this damn thing. Get me a belt! Excuse us while we forgot what we were doing - because I lost control hours ago!" - Elvis Presley in Las Vegas Feb 19th 1970.

Three new FTD Releases for late April: Three new FTD releases have been announced for late April release, one soundboard, one book and a double-vinyl Promised Land.
- 'Another Saturday Night' 1975 soundboard: A previously unreleased concert, from June 7 1975 Evening Show not even on a bootleg audience recording, plus three well-chosen bonus tracks! If one place is to be picked as the most important in the career of Elvis Presley, it is without doubt Shreveport in the northwest part of Louisiana. The exposure that Elvis got through the radio broadcast of The Louisiana Hayride in 1954-56 was one of the key factors of establishing the early part of his career. With the exception of Las Vegas, there is no place where Elvis played more shows, and his return to the city in 1975 was like a homecoming to both Elvis and the many fans he had there since he started out. We have chosen to release the soundboard from the evening show of June 7 – definitely a show that Elvis and the audience truly enjoy, and with a great set list featuring old and new favourites.

Back in January EIN noted the rumour that this would be an FTD March release, we were close!
The CD comes in a 5" digipack with an eight-page booklet featuring photos from the June 1975 tour.

Track 24 & 25 University of Alabama Coliseum, Tuscaloosa. June 3, 1975, evening show

- Welcome Home Elvis 1960: Flaming Star, in collaboration with FTD, publishes a 260 pages book (with bonus CD) about the vital weeks in 1960 where Elvis regained control over his career. The format is the same as the well-known FTD book format (King Creole -The Music and A Moment In Time). The book includes:
- More than 300 photos, many of them previously unpublished,
- text by David English
- CD with the original mono master for "ELVIS IS BACK".
Pictures include Elvis coming home from the army, several press conferences, pictures at Graceland, coverage of the Sinatra TV show and much more.

CD Tracks - 01 Make Me Know It, 02 Fever, 03 The Girl Of My Best Friend, 04 I Will Be Home Again, 05 Dirty, Dirty Feeling, 06 Thrill Of Your Love, 07 Soldier Boy, 08 Such A Night, 09 It Feels So Right, 10 Girl Next Door Went A’Walking, 11 Like A Baby, 12 Reconsider Baby

EIN notes that unlike some of Elvis' later mono singles (See FEIM Legacy Review) this mono album was a simple 'fold-down' from the Stereo tapes, not a specific different mix.

'Promised Land, The Companion Album' Double-Vinyl FTD:
FTD vinyl is pleased to announce the release of "Promised Land – The Companion Album" - A Special Limited Edition 2-disc 180-gram vinyl set. This release follows the other FTD "sessions" albums in not featuring the Masters but only alternate takes.

FTD Good News, Bad News - How many years to go?: In the EXCELLENT new issue of 'Elvis The Man & His Music' editor Trevor Cajiao catches up for a long and interesting interview with Ernst Jorgensen.
In it Ernst answers questions about the new FTD releases 'Promised Land' and 'Wonderful World Of Christmas' (why the true undubbed 'Merry Christmas Baby' was not included), the odd idea behind the splicing of 'Stage Rehearsal', Legacy releases, FTD books (the fiasco of 'Fashion For A King' "I think the book is important but the mistakes are very annoying") as well as a long discussion on Public Domain releases and the MRS label.
Bad News is the decline in sales for FTD and all CD releases -
Ernst - "There is a steady decline on sales of all product, but that's happening in the record business generally. To some extent it's also the same with FTD - no more so on 5" than on 7" - at least only marginally. In the beginning we couldn't see that PD releases and bootlegs affected the sales of our product, but we certainly can now. There is a LOT of product available to the fans, and obviously almost everybody is struggling to keep up.
We sell less than half of what we did a few years ago.

On how long FTD will be able to keep releasing live concert soundboards - "A shot from the hip - two to three years? Ask me again then."
Good News is Ernst's comments on future releases -
On the 1969 Memphis sessions outtakes "of course the material will be made available at some point"
On Classic Albums - "We will release all the original albums in the 'Classic Albums' format, if we have something to include that makes it worthwhile."
He also notes that "Elvis In Concert" is in FTD's release plan, although not anywhere in the near future.
On the Legacy Series - "They sell very well in America - on a completely different level than FTD. The decision on how many more and how much longer is entirely up to the Legacy people. Roger and I just come up with proposals."
Go here for EIN's collected Ernst Jorgensen & Roger Semon Interviews.
And please purchase this issue of 'Elvis The Man and His Music' for the whole, very interesting interview.

Sunday & Monday 1 & 2nd January 2012 - - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers

'Promised Land' FTD CD Review: The long-awaited double-CD "Classic Album" version of 1974's 'Promised Land' album. Recorded in December 1973 at Stax Records in Memphis, the original album was released in 1974 and is thought by some to be the best Elvis studio album from the 1970s.
The title track, "Promised Land" was a cover of a 1965 hit by Chuck Berry and was issued as a single and hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and landed in the UK top ten.
Unlike the previous STAX classic albums, this time FTD present us with a second disc as "The Making Of" this wonderful album - in a similar style to the FTD ‘Let Yourself Go’ being ‘The Making Of’ the Comeback Special. This means lots of studio interaction and banter as Elvis and the band work-through to the final Masters – and it is a real delight.

‘Elvis Country’ Legacy Edition: OUT TODAY January 2nd the UK 'Elvis Country' Legacy release.
Presley biographer Peter Guralnick wrote, "Elvis has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago." Ernst Jorgensen wrote about the session, "Elvis seemed inspired, singing with a passion and soulfulness that recalled Memphis, the band fell in with equal feeling, their confidence and expressiveness growing along with his. Both singer and band were performing out of genre, improvising their own rhythms and phrasing on the spot, challenging each other." To paraphrase Jorgensen, "they had something to be proud of."

Sunday 25 December 2011 Wishing everyone a HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Elvis Country Legacy Edition – 14 days until its release!: In January 1971, Elvis was well and truly back and on top of his game. During 1970, he chalked up no less than 4 Platinum and 3 Gold album awards and 5 Gold singles. As if this sales achievement wasn't enough, on January 16, he was given the award as one of the "Top Ten Young Men of The Year" by the United States Jaycees. His new album Elvis Country released that same month received critical acclaim.

In an outstanding review for Rolling Stone, biographer Peter Guralnick said: "... Elvis Presley has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago."

Elvis Country is, obviously, a return to roots. But it's the singing, the passion and engagement most of all which mark this album as something truly exceptional. All the familiar virtues are there. The intensity. That peculiar combination of hypertension and soul.

There is even, for those who care to recall, a frenzied recollection of what the rock era once was, as Elvis takes on Jerry Lee Lewis' masterful "Whole Lot-ta Shakin' Goin' On" and comes out relatively unscathed. He has never sung better.

Elvis Country received an RIAA Gold certification and spent 21 weeks on the Billboard album chart. The single "I Really Don t Want To Know" c/w "There Goes My Everything" reached #9 and #21 on the Billboard country and pop charts respectively. The June 1971 follow-up studio album Love Letters From Elvis also contains songs recorded during the historic four-day Nashville session that spawned Elvis Country, including "Got My Mojo Working" and "Life" (Billboard #53).

This new 2-CD Legacy Edition features both these classic original albums plus 6 bonus tracks, including the full version of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago," the studio jam "A Hundred Years From Now" and the single "Where Did They Go, Lord" c/w "Rags To Riches," which reached #33 on the Billboard chart.

‘Elvis Country’ Legacy Edition: Sony Legacy have issued a press release publicising the new January 3rd release.
It includes…
The original 12-song Elvis Country (subtitled "I'm 10,000 Years Old"), debuted January 23, 1971 on the Billboard album chart, peaked at #12, spent 21 weeks on the chart, and was certified RIAA Gold.
In the original Rolling Stone review future Presley biographer Peter Guralnick wrote, "Elvis has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago." The idea of inserting excerpts of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" in between the album tracks gave the LP a conceptual feel that had never been encountered before. And the songs, from the high-energy rock of "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" (which gives Jerry Lee Lewis a run for the money), to the big ballads that were becoming an Elvis trademark (Eddy Arnold's "I Really Don't Want To Know" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" among them) that were some of Elvis' greatest performances ever.

Elvis Country was a breath of fresh air for most of his millions of fans, and signaled a renaissance of his creative energies.
The new Nashville band had the feel of the Memphis hitmakers of 1969, mainly because their core members were part of the original Muscle Shoals sound which put that town on the map: bassist Norbert Putnam, pianist David Briggs, and drummer Jerry Carrigan. Add in masterful guitarist James Burton - who had become indispensable to Elvis after the two recent Las Vegas residencies - and the scene was set.
There were inevitable contrasts to the tightly structured Memphis sessions, but it ended there. In Nashville, once the song-pluggers put in their suggestions, the rest was up to Elvis, who never ceased to surprise all who were
present He laid down first and second takes with ease, and then turned around and initiated impromptu studio jams that kept the musicians firing on all cylinders.
It all came to a head on the fourth night. After a couple of warm-ups (including Eddy Arnold's "I Really Don't Want To Know"), they thought back to the country tunes they'd already recorded, and the idea of a country album began to take shape. In short order, Elvis laid down Bob Wills' western-swing standard "Faded Love" and Ernest Tubb's "Tomorrow Never Comes." After cutting Hank Cochran's barroom weeper "Make The World Go Away" (via Eddy Arnold), Elvis and crew moved on to Willie's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and then "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water," familiar to rock and roll fans of Johnny Rivers, but originally a big country hit for Stonewall Jackson.
Ernst Jorgensen wrote about the session, "Elvis seemed inspired, singing with a passion and soulfulness that recalled Memphis, the band fell in with equal feeling, their confidence and expressiveness growing along with his. Both singer and band were performing out of genre, improvising their own rhythms and phrasing on the spot, challenging each other." To paraphrase Jorgensen, "they had something to be proud of."

3. 'Elvis Is Back' - Special double-VINYL version: The special 2-disc, 180-gram vinyl set is sure to make Elvis fans around the world happy because it’s been the most requested FTD album for vinyl release ever.  This very limited release has been re-mastered from the original analogue tapes and includes lots of great photos from the Graceland archives in Memphis.
"Elvis Is Back!" was released in April 1960 and was Elvis’ tenth album. Recording sessions took place on March 20 and April 3, 1960, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. It was his first album to be released in true stereo and peaked at number two on the Top Pop Albums chart and is included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."  The album was certified Gold on July 15, 1999, by the RIAA.

4. 'Elvis Presley – A Moment in Time, 4 Days in ’56' by "Return To Tupelo" producer Michael Rose chronicles the four days from early 1956 as Elvis barnstorms from Detroit through Columbus, and finally back to Memphis and his new home at Audubon Drive - May 25 to May 28th 1956.
In Memphis for Elvis Week 2012 Ernst Jorgenson said that it was a 192 page photo book being produced as a companion release to the Sony/Legacy 5CD box set, "Young Man With The Big Beat".
Michael Rose has been working with Ernst Jorgenson for the last 12 months hunting down contacts and stories.

Updated 'Young Man with the Big Beat' In-Depth Review: Released to coincide with the 55th anniversary celebration of Elvis' national break-through year, 'Young Man with the Big Beat' is a 5-disc box set in a retro format containing all of the 1956 RCA Masters including the complete albums 'Elvis Presley' (#1254) and the second 'Elvis' (#1382). It also includes a previously-unreleased live show, outtakes and rare interviews with the Elvis along with an 84-page book with a day-by-day chronology plus assorted photos and memorabilia.
Back in March 1956 an RCA promotional poster billed Elvis Presley as a "Young Man with the Big Beat". There is no doubt that the billboard’s designers would have had no idea what an impact that BIG BEAT would have on future generations, shaking the very ground of the until now easy-listening entertainment world.
Can this new box-set really capture everything that Elvis achieved in this great Rock'n'Roll year
