Main, in Memphis. Some 50 fans' "art" exhibits are on display in a rather tiny gallery and will remain there for one month. Bill & Connie Burk were not all that impressed with what was shown. Bill commented: "Knowing what "art" Graceland has in its archives from fans over the years, we felt what is being shown is -- in a word -- tacky. Could have been much improved". Spirit, ambience of Elvis lives on in Hugh's Jungle Room: A new business on Des Moines' northwest side pays tribute to one of the world's best known rockers: Elvis Presley. Owner Hugh Duoblys credits his mother's gift of a 45-rpm Elvis record as the inspiration for the business, Hugh's Jungle Room. The lounge is at 5715 Douglas Ave., formerly home to Jazzy Willy's. The Jungle Room will offer a full range of beer and mixed drinks, karaoke and live bands, dart boards and some high-end video games - and ambience not likely to be found elsewhere in the metropolitan area. "People are asking me why I'm going to have things like tiger-print carpet," Duoblys said. "If you go to Graceland, it immediately becomes evident that The King had terrible taste. We're going to do our best to be authentic." Duoblys, who in addition to bartending has worked for a carpet retailer and as a drill sergeant in the United States Army, said opening Hugh's Jungle Room represents the realization of his true calling. The Documentary Some of the editing is interesting as there are short gaps between segments that make you wonder what the producer and editor were thinking (eg. the gap between Elvis’s last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and home video footage). The documentary also virtually ignores Elvis’s Hollywood period in the 60s and why didn’t they use the digitally re-mastered version of Suspicious Minds from the year 2000 release of Elvis: That’s The Way It Is? The highlights include:
The Disc Video: 4:3 aspect; colour segments exhibit robust color. Audio: audio level is variable, particularly between the narration and archival insets. At times it sounds as though Elvis is in an echo chamber (eg. Elvis singing Jailhouse Rock). However, pump up the volume for most of the music clips – they have a great sound impact. Audio Options: Digital 5.1; original Stereo. The Digital 5.1 option shows how far we’ve come with audio options. It blows the original stereo version out of the water. Languages: German, French, Castillian, Italian and of course English Audio-Video Synchronicity: greater attention to the video-audio synchronicity would have benefited the disc. Several of the archival clips (eg. Elvis’s first screen test and the 68 Comeback segment) suffer from poor synchronicity. Cover: as for the original video release with minor changes Bonus Extras: Elvis Picture Gallery
Verdict: This release is a fan pleaser. However, with the archival material and technical resources available today it should have been a lot better.
Ask EIN Do you have a question about Elvis? Each week EIN receives many questions from fans around the world. A selection of questions and our answers will appear regularly in the E-Alert.
Robert (Australia): Why don't all FTD CDs have sound quality like Silver Screen Stereo or The Jungle Room Sessions?
EIN: Robert, it depends which ones you mean. Live Soundboards come from original cassette recordings so will inevitably sound exactly as they are. Is this what you mean? However both 'Dinner at 8' and 'Closing Night' came from reel-2-reel. The audio on almost all the 'studio' FTDs are excellent or do you have particular complaints? The 'orthophonic' audio label on 'S.S.S' was a little joke as at last Ernst had found some better generation tapes to use! RCA used to use that 'special' label on their vinyl even in the 50s when the audio was woeful!
There also seems to have been a leap in sound quality and care since 'Elvis30#1s' was sold on it being 'remastered' - and Vic Anesini is 'THE MAN' for getting a great smooth 'real' sound without digital edges. look here >>> http://www.elvisinfonet.com/closeup.html Most live concerts were remixed by Dennis Ferrante a while back (Elvis International, All Shook Up etc etc) and he has his good & bad points. Elvis Trivia Question Crying In The Chapel appeared on what 1967 Elvis gospel album?
(Last week's answer: Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce was featured in Girl Happy)
