Elvis Art Exhibit: Opened Friday night at Memphis Heritage, 509 S. Main, in Memphis.  Some 50 fans' "art" exhibits are on display in a rather tiny gallery and will remain there for one month.  Bill & Connie Burk were not all that impressed with what was shown.  Bill commented: "Knowing what "art" Graceland has in its archives from fans over the years, we felt what is being shown is -- in a word -- tacky.  Could have been much improved".

Spirit, ambience of Elvis lives on in Hugh's Jungle Room: A new business on Des Moines' northwest side pays tribute to one of the world's best known rockers: Elvis Presley. Owner Hugh Duoblys credits his mother's gift of a 45-rpm Elvis record as the inspiration for the business, Hugh's Jungle Room. The lounge is at 5715 Douglas Ave., formerly home to Jazzy Willy's. The Jungle Room will offer a full range of beer and mixed drinks, karaoke and live bands, dart boards and some high-end video games - and ambience not likely to be found elsewhere in the metropolitan area.

"People are asking me why I'm going to have things like tiger-print carpet," Duoblys said. "If you go to Graceland, it immediately becomes evident that The King had terrible taste. We're going to do our best to be authentic."

The lounge, accented with photos of Elvis and other celebrities of the era, will have a couples-only area, dubbed "Heartbreak Hotel," with high-backed booths and a waterfall. Despite the ambience, however, patrons should not expect Hugh's Jungle Room to be about Elvis impersonators, all-Elvis-all-the-time music, or tacky shrines or tributes. Although the dŽcor may bring to mind pop culture of the 1960s and early '70s, the lounge also will feature country and classic rock music on the jukebox, karaoke that includes thousands of selections of all varieties and, in the near future, food service and live bands. Duoblys plans to be the master of ceremonies - a welcoming presence who will visit patrons at their tables to make sure they're having a good time.

"I could open a bar anywhere and serve drinks," said Duoblys, a veteran area bartender. "But when they come into the Jungle Room, I don't want to be behind the bar. I want to greet them and talk with them, and do everything in my power to make sure they have the best possible time and can't wait to come back."It's that attitude that caused Kevin Goetzl of Urbandale to involve himself with Hugh's Jungle Room. Goetzl, who owns an accounting firm in Des Moines, aligned himself with the establishment as financial backer and accountant after getting to know Duoblys, nicknamed "Elvis" by some.

"You can go to any bar or restaurant around Des Moines with Hugh and without a doubt, people will know him," Goetzl said. "Someone will say, 'I remember you when you bartended at the Ground Round,' or 'I remember when you always used to make me that drink I really liked at Limey's.'"With that kind of a following, the Jungle Room will be a success," Goetzl said. "Hugh has a personality that draws people to him and makes them want to be around him."

Goetzl said when he first became aware Jazzy Willy's was for sale, logistical concerns prevented him from suggesting it as a site for Hugh's Jungle Room. But after closely surveying the property and its nearby amenities, he decided it would be a good location.

"You can get there from Merle Hay Road or from Douglas. In fact, there are three easy routes to the building," he said. "Guests are welcome to park not only in the Jungle Room lot, but at the businesses on either side after they close for the day. It's a great spot in a great location, and people will be happy with the ease of finding it and getting in and out."

Duoblys, who in addition to bartending has worked for a carpet retailer and as a drill sergeant in the United States Army, said opening Hugh's Jungle Room represents the realization of his true calling.

"Elvis influenced so many people, not just the singers who have emulated him, but politicians, actors, world leaders," he said. "Opening a place that is a tribute is to an icon and his era is a dream come true. I hope people will come in and enjoy my dream with me." (Source: Des Moines Register)

DVD Review:

Elvis The Great Performances Vol. 1 Center Stage (25th Anniversary Edition) - IceStorm Entertainment, Germany, 2002, 53 minutes, Region 2 PAL, Rated E (exempt from clasification)

The Documentary

Originally released over a decade ago as part of two volume home video series, this documentary has now been released in a 3 volume DVD series, the other volumes being: Elvis The Man and The Music and Elvis From The Waist Up.The documentary is narrated by one of Elvis’s close friends, George Klein.  Kein’s commentary is certainly competent and well paced but is undistiguished.  As this DVD is an authorised ‘Elvis Presley Enterprises’ (EPE) release it offers a solid, politically correct view of the legend.

The problem ‘Center Stage’ has as a documentary is that unless you are new to Elvis you have seen it all before, numerous times.  It’s not a bad documentary by any means – it’s professionally produced, but it suffers by being unable to distinguish itself from many other similar products. Also, considering its origination and EPE authorisation the lack of bonus extras is a definite weakness.

Some of the editing is interesting as there are short gaps between segments that make you wonder what the producer and editor were thinking (eg. the gap between Elvis’s last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and home video footage).  The documentary also virtually ignores Elvis’s Hollywood period in the 60s and why didn’t they use the digitally re-mastered version of Suspicious Minds from the year 2000 release of Elvis: That’s The Way It Is?

The highlights include:

  • Elvis’s television performances from the 1950s
    Elvis’s original screen test
Rare home video footage from the 60s (a small segment sourced from the once contentious video release ‘Joe Esposito’s Home Movies of Elvis’)
Color footage (without audio) of Elvis and Buddy Holly backstage at one of Elvis’s concerts
    Presleymania (hysteria) in the 50s
Reactions from the ‘establishment’ to Presleymania
  • Elvis’s emotionally powerful but sad rendition of Unchained Melody filmed in June 1977

The Disc

Color Mode: color/black & white

Video: 4:3 aspect; colour segments exhibit robust color.

Audio: audio level is variable, particularly between the narration and archival insets.  At times it sounds as though Elvis is in an echo chamber (eg. Elvis singing Jailhouse Rock).  However, pump up the volume for most of the music clips – they have a great sound impact.

Audio Options: Digital 5.1; original Stereo.  The Digital 5.1 option shows how far we’ve come with audio options.  It blows the original stereo version out of the water.

Languages: German, French, Castillian, Italian and of course English

Sub-titles: German, French, Castillian, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch

Audio-Video Synchronicity: greater attention to the video-audio synchronicity would have benefited the disc.  Several of the archival clips (eg. Elvis’s first screen test and the 68 Comeback segment) suffer from poor synchronicity.

Disc Menu: Not the easiest menu to maneuver.  I experienced difficulty removing the German sub-titles I found when I started the disc.

Cover: as for the original video release with minor changes

Bonus Extras: Elvis Picture Gallery

Verdict: This release is a fan pleaser.  However, with the archival material and technical resources available today it should have been a lot better.

Ask EIN

Do you have a question about Elvis? Each week EIN receives many questions from fans around the world. A selection of questions and our answers will appear regularly in the E-Alert.

Robert (Australia): Why don't all FTD CDs have sound quality like Silver Screen Stereo or The Jungle Room Sessions?

EIN: Robert, it depends which ones you mean. Live Soundboards come from original cassette recordings so will inevitably sound exactly as they are. Is this what you mean?  However both 'Dinner at 8' and 'Closing Night' came from reel-2-reel. The audio on almost all the 'studio' FTDs are excellent or do you have particular complaints? The 'orthophonic' audio label on 'S.S.S' was a little joke as at last Ernst had found some better generation tapes to use! RCA used to use that 'special' label on their vinyl even in the 50s when the audio was woeful!

There also seems to have been a leap in sound quality and care since 'Elvis30#1s' was sold on it being 'remastered' - and Vic Anesini is 'THE MAN' for getting a great smooth 'real' sound without digital edges. look here >>>

Most live concerts were remixed by Dennis Ferrante a while back (Elvis International, All Shook Up etc etc) and he has his good & bad points.

Elvis Trivia Question

Crying In The Chapel appeared on what 1967 Elvis gospel album?

(Last week's answer: Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce was featured in Girl Happy)
