New Elvis Art Exhibition in Goulburn, Australia: Two hours south of Sydney and 1 hour north of Canberra is the Australian country town of Goulburn. For two weeks the South Hill Gallery is hosting "Elvis Moody Blue" an Elvis art exhibition featuring Australian artists Martin Sharp, Jim Anderson, Max Cullen, Lesley Dimmick and others.
Artist Jim Anderson talks about the exhibition opening this last weekend.
"Yes I was an early guilt ridden Elvis tragic from the start, captured by his synthesis of hillbilly, black race music, the blues and white popular music back then. Guilt ridden because he came from a dirt poor white trailer trash background and my parents were horrified at my passion for him at the time. I took my little sister to see 'Love Me Tender' and my mother later said "Don't you ever take your little sister to a film like that again. I think you are getting much to close to her." It was Elvis' dancing that mesmerised me as well. In a
|
|
different cultural climate he could have given Michael Jackson a run for his money. Check out his dance to 'Got A Lot a Lovin' to Do' in that relatively forgotten early film Loving You. Before they ruined him in. Well, ultimately Colonel Tom Parker, bad advice and sycophants or not, Elvis was just Elvis and was so all the way to his early end. He could plumb great emotional depth".

Dee Stanley Has Passed Away: Dee Stanley passed away today. It was reported back in July, when she was in hospital, that her condition was seriously deteriorating - but for a while she improved.
Today Billy Stanley sadly noted, "I watched my Mom step into heaven.. I'm Thankful my brothers and I were there for her."
David Stanley wrote "Mom just passed. She is with The Lord now."
Vernon Presley married Davada (Dee) Elliot Stanley on July 3, 1960. Elvis always had a close relationship with his father but when his mother died in 1958, his father then started dating a married woman named Dee Stanley. Elvis didn’t care for Dee thinking that it was too soon after Gladys' death for his father to be dating again. When Vernon and Dee Stanley married in July 1960 Elvis did not attend the ceremony.

'Change of Habit' Director William A. Graham Dies: William A. Graham who directed Elvis Presley's final film and the pilots for The Big Valley and Police Story, died Sept 12 of complications from pneumonia. He was 87.
During his long career Graham also helmed the movies 'Honky' (1971) and 'Return to the Blue Lagoon' (91). He earned an Emmy nomination and also directed three episodes of The X-Files in the 1990s.
In the '60s, he directed a number of TV series including Naked City, The F.B.I, The Fugitive and Batman.
His also directed the telemovie 'Elvis and the Colonel: The Untold Story' (1993), with Rob Youngblood as Elvis Presley and Beau Bridges as Col. Tom Parker.
Earlier, Graham (right with Elvis) directed the real Elvis in Change of Habit (1969), which has the rock 'n' roll legend, in his last film, playing a doctor opposite Mary Tyler Moore as a nun.
In an interview about Elvis, William Graham noted that he talked Presley into changing his famous hairstyle for the film.
"He had a kind of a pompadour in front and his hair was full of grease. And because this was a movie about a doctor working in the ghetto, it just didn't seem to be quite the right hairstyle, so I talked to him and I said, 'Elvis, how would you feel about changing your hair a little bit?' Well, he said he would be open to the idea. In the end we washed all
|
|
the grease out of his hair and modified the styling and it was quite a landmark achievement. It was pretty unusual to get that done. And Elvis actually liked it very much.
Elvis was wonderful to work with and honestly was the nicest man I ever met in my life. Elvis called everyone 'Sir' or 'M'am' - from the gate guard at the studio all the way up to the head of the studio. Elvis was very responsive to direction. He didn't show any of the kind of ego, the kind of temperament that you would expect from a big star -- and he was a big star. Soemtimes Elvis would come out and sit around on the set and bring out his guitar and he would sing and play for us, lots of songs like 'Hound Dog' or 'Blue Suede Shoes' and this was wonderful for us. Elvis made being on the movie set a real thrill for the whole crew".

Wrongly arrested Elvis Impersonator sues accuser: Paul Kevin Curtis, the Elvis impersonator from Mississippi falsely accused of sending ricin-tainted letters to President Barack Obama and other officials filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the man authorities now believe is the real perpetrator.
Paul Kevin Curtis, who was arrested and released in April, wants an unspecified amount of money from James Everette Dutschke for defamation of character, emotional distress and financial loss.
Curtis, who has said the alleged frame-up was part of a feud between the two men, was interrogated and jailed for six days while facing international media attention. Both are Mississippi residents.
Although ultimately cleared of wrongdoing, Curtis has had trouble finding work as a performer, said his attorney, Christi McCoy of Oxford, Mississippi.
"His phone just quit ringing after this," she said. "Kevin has really been depressed, really had a hard time with this."
Dutschke was arrested on April 27 and has been held without bond while |
|
awaiting trial on five counts. His attorney, Ken Coghlan of Oxford, did not immediately return a call for comment.
The next step, she said, could involve a lawsuit against the government.
"Ultimately," McCoy said, "they're the ones responsible for what happened to him."

Elvis Presley's Rolex King Midas: Elvis was extremely handsome, charismatic and ultra-talented. Very few people knew Elvis wore a Rolex, but it was not just any Rolex. Elvis wore a limited edition Rolex King Midas (Model Reference Number 9630) which Rolex only made 1000 examples of. The King Midas at the time was the most expensive Rolex money could buy. As a matter of fact, in 1970 a Rolex Day-Date retailed for $1825 and a King Midas retailed for $2500. In 1975 a Day-Date retailed for $3300 and a King Midas retailed for $5500.
This very, very rare limited edition Rolex King Midas (far right) was given to Elvis as a token of appreciation for playing 6 days of sold-out concerts in 1970 at the Houston Astrodome Livestock Show & Rodeo.

'David Lynch Understood Elvis': Marty Lacker has written to us about our EIN article (below) on movie director and music fan, David Lynch's comments on Elvis.
Marty... I read with interest the comments by David Lynch and for the first time in as long as I can remember someone who didn't know Elvis understood one of the main and important aspects of Elvis' singing, in particular when it comes to singing blues and R&B. Many times I have stated and tried to get people to understand, especially those young black artists and even Stevie Wonder, who accused Elvis of "stealing the black man's music." He did no such thing, Elvis sang those songs because he felt that music from the top of his head to his toes. It was inside him and he sang what he felt which is why he did it so well.
It was Elvis who in the 50's broke down the barriers in white homes for Black music and Black artists and many of them who were struggling back then to get their music heard, have always thanked him for that. It's the young black artists, most who were not even born when he started that make those accusations towards him because they're uninformed.
Was he influenced by the old Blues singers that came before him? Absolutely and he was the first to admit that and pay homage to them. Elvis was very informed and knowledgeable about most of them because as he used to explain to us, that as a young boy growing up in East Tupelo as a poor young boy he used to lay in bed and listen to an old beat up radio he had he used to listen to the old Mississippi
|
|
Blues stations as well as the country stations. He felt that music in his soul.
This is a subject that has really stuck in my craw every time I hear someone accuse him of stealing the music. I understand Stevie's constant crusade for Black folk but he should have paid attention when his idol Ray Charles answered the interviewer on a show he did with white country singer Travis Tritt. The interviewer asked Ray what he thought about Travis a white man singing his, Ray's music, meaning the blues and R&B, Ray quickly answered, "That's fine, MUSIC HAS NO COLOR"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm gratified to hear David Lynch's informed comments.....
- Thanks, Marty Lacker

David Lynch and Elvis: Director David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) is the reigning master of the uneasy dream, the enigmatic detail in movies, he has also released a CD 'Crazy Clown Time'. David Lynch is also a big Elvis fan.
He recently chose Elvis Presley in the Comeback Special as his Number One performance that reached the deepest level, specifically Elvis singing 'Baby,What You Want Me To Do'.
Lynch noted, "Elvis did the Comeback Special in '68. He was falling in the ratings and it brought him right back onto the throne and, when you watch it - and this song in particular, which is a cover of a Jimmy Reed song, Elvis makes it his own - you see how come he is the King of rock'n'roll. This music is him, he's got every inflection, every feeling 100 per cent out there for all to see, it's so thrilling to watch, it's infectious. With singers and musicians, there's the surface of something and then real deep levels of being it, and nobody gets close to Elvis because he gets that thing at the deepest level and it comes alive with him and everybody feels it and it's like magic, and this brought him back like gangbusters. He looks so great in his black leather, but even if he looked weird he'd still probably be king. Elvis is the total package, he was born for it."
In the past David Lynch has also talked about early Elvis.
Lynch: When I first heard rockabilly.. it was like being hit with a truck filled with happiness [laughs]. It was a thrilling truck, and you know, I |
|
sort of wish everybody could experience that feeling. You've heard these stories. So many musicians when they saw Elvis for the first time, they just slammed their head with their first and just sad, "Damn! This is it!" And it was just suddenly so obvious. It wasn't there, and then it was there. And it had this unbelievable power, and it just screamed out, and everybody and his little brother lit up like a Christmas tree. It was unbelievably beautiful. I just, inside, felt this thrill, this love of the sound. It was like grabbing onto an electric wire.
With my film Blue Velvet, you know, that '50s music held a happiness for sure, but you know Elvis also sings "Heartbreak Hotel," and there's a kind of sweet sadness, and that dream thing that could go either way. The '50s dream, like the Fleetwoods "Come Softly to Me," was real popular. And all the great ones there, they caught this thing. In every decade the music paints the mood. So if you listen to what was popular in the '50s, from '56 on, maybe, and it's a summer night and you're listening to this or you're slowdancing in a basement with a girl, you can go back to that time."
EIN Note: David Lynch's critically acclaimed 1990 film, Wild At Heart (starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern) has a strong Elvis sub-theme, with Nic Cage |
|
modelling his character (Sailor Ripley) on the King. In it Cage (quite capably) also sings 'Love Me' and 'Love Me Tender'. Lisa Marie later married Nic Cage in 2002, its a crazy Elvis world!

Zooey Deschanel channels Elvis: Last night’s episode of Conan O'Brien featured actor/singer Zooey Deschanel talking about how she prepared for her role as Elvis in FOX’s hit sitcom “New Girl.” In the episode, which aired in March earlier this year, Zooey Deschanel does a killer Elvis. Or at least she has the clothes, wig and snarl down pat.
In the show, Deschanel sings such Elvis Presley classics as “In the Ghetto” and “Burning Love.”
Deschanel admitted that nobody will mistake her for the singer. Her entire impression is unfortunately only based on Elvis saying “Hey mama” a lot in old movies. 'New Girl' is a hit with the new generation, so Elvis and his legacy is still everywhere. |

Graceland Voted 2013 #1 Iconic American Attraction: EIN helped with the voting (see story below) and now it’s official as Elvis' Graceland has been selected as 10Best.com’s “Best Iconic American Attraction”.
Posted on 10Best.com, "The name is synonymous with Memphis and with rock 'n' roll. But for the shy young man who bought this house to give his family privacy in the wake of his meteoric rise to stardom, Graceland was only one thing - home. From the moment one steps on the 13-acre estate, it’s obvious that Graceland equaled love and sanctuary for Elvis."
When asked about the award, Lisa Marie was very surprised stating, "Wow. That's really incredible. I'm very humbled and flattered to hear that. It's incredible . . . it's just incredible."
In addition to Graceland, there were many other great |

attractions chosen by readers including the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Mt. Rushmore (SD), Grand Canyon (AZ), Statue of Liberty (NY), Las Vegas Strip (NV) and the Golden Gate Bridge (CA).

Marty Lacker comments on 'Aussie' Joe Bugner: In our story below Joe Bugner stated that "I said ``Excuse me, Elvis that's a beautiful robe you gave Ali. I'd love one like that because, as you know I'm also a champion.'' But Elvis turns around and says ``You're no champion'' just like that. I told Elvis to get stuffed and I walked out."... Marty Lacker kindly reported back to EIN...
... I read Joe Bugner's comments and in plain English he's full of sh*t.
Elvis not only didn't say that, he was not an impolite person especially to people he just met.
Before that night, like most people in the world, he never heard of Joe Bugner.
The only reason Elvis would ever say something like that to somebody is if they were rude to him and disrespected him or someone who was close to him. Just as some of the fans who are negative about some of us in the Memphis Mafia wouldn't like what he had to say to them if he was here to hear that uninformed crap about friends he liked having around.
Sounds like another case of someone looking to get publicity off of Elvis with made up crap.
It also shows how crass Bugner was if he actually asked Elvis for a robe.
|
|
Elvis knew Ali and thought a great deal of him which is why he gave Ali that robe, Elvis had Sonny West have it made. -

The singer, 72, is set to release 'The Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll Songbook' in November. Described as a tribute to the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly, the album was recorded at the Blackbird Studio and The Parlor in Nashville, Tennessee.
Cliff noted, "This was my chance to pay tribute not only to, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest advances in musical history, but also the artists who took rock 'n' roll to the top of the charts world-wide.
As with all great art forms, rock 'n' roll did not stand still and there have been some phenomenal changes, bringing it to where we are now.
All I know is that 'in the beginning' what kicked the whole thing off was the fabulous rock 'n' roll songbook. |
|
That whole period was new and unbelievably exciting, and to think that I was there! Saving up my pocket money for weeks so that I could buy Elvis' first album."
The album includes Rip It Up, Such A Night, School Days, Teddy Bear / Too Much (Medley), Stuck On You and Johnny B. Goode.

'Aussie' Joe Bugner recalls telling Elvis to 'get stuffed': Joe Bugner who fought Muhammad Ali for the title crown recently talked about meeting Ali and Elvis -
- Before your first fight with Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas, Elvis Presley gave him a magnificent bejewelled robe. Did you ask Elvis if he had one for you?
Joe Bugner - The robe Elvis gave Ali had the words `Peoples Choice'' spelt out in gemstones on the back. It was February 1973 and Elvis was performing at the Las Vegas Hilton. Before the fight Elvis invited about 50 or so people to his hotel suite for a party. I thought I'd be very complimentary to him. I said ``Excuse me, Elvis that's a beautiful robe you gave Ali. I'd love one like that because, as you know I'm also a champion.'' But Elvis turns around and says ``You're no champion'' just like that. I told Elvis to get stuffed and I walked out.
- Did Elvis say: ``ladies and gentlemen, Joe Bugner has left the building?''
Joe Bugner - No but his bodyguard, a guy they called Big Red comes over and says "Hey man whatya doin ... no one speaks to the King like that.'' I said `Mate, you tell Elvis he's a dickhead.''
- Your first fight with Ali - you're 22, going in against one of the greatest boxers of all time. Did you really think you had a chance? |
|
Joe Bugner - I was very confident. I felt I knew Ali inside out. I first met him in New York in 1969 and I must have sparred 200 rounds with him over the years. My left jab was my best punch and I knew it gave Ali trouble. But he beat me on points over 12 rounds in a non-title fight. Sammy Davis Jr jumped into the ring to hug Ali straight after the fight. Frank Sinatra told me later he thought I won.
Muhammad Ali beat 'Aussie' Joe Bugner twice, maybe for behaving like such an idiot with his friend Elvis!

New Interview with Norbert Putnam: PopMatters Neil Kelly recently did a new interview with Elvis bass-man "Putt".
In it Putt discusses the Stax sessions, playing with Tony Joe White and more...
Putnam: I played on 122 recordings with Elvis between 1970 and 1977 and in all the years I’ve played for Presley, he never once came over to me and said "Hey Putt, could you do something like this on the bass line." Elvis never once did that, and I don’t recall him doing it to any other players, because the man was so centred on his vocal once he began, he was going to deliver that vocal with tremendous emotion on the first take, and try to get it if he could on the first take.
Putnam: My job as a studio bassist was to walk in the room and say hello to this young man named Tony Joe White, who just came up from Louisiana. I’d grab a legal pad, and Tony Joe would play "Polk Salad Annie". While he’s playing it, I’m charting out all of the changes, so I don’t have to memorise all of the song. I’d have a number chart as a roadmap through all of the changes, so I’m not likely to make a mistake. Then I would put that down and listen to the time of his voice, listen to the feel of the whole thing, and at that point I would |
|
try to decide what sort of bass player I needed to be for the next three hours to make his music work.
Putnam: No. No charts. With Elvis, it was like a free-for-all. Felton Jarvis would come out and say "OK guys, we gotta get to work. We’ve been here for three hours, Elvis has been telling great stories, all laughing and having a good time, but RCA is paying for this. We’ve got to give them something." I’d look up at the clock and it’d be ten in the evening! Felton would say "Elvis, let’s do that song you and I like called such ‘n such, and Elvis would say "OK Felton, play it for the guys." And the music would come out over the sound system in the studio. Every man in the band, and this is what I loved about this group of players, we could all write a chart as fast as we could hear it. And sure enough, the drummer would indicate certain drum fills he had heard on the recording, I’m taking down the bass line and all the changes, just in case Elvis wants something similar to that bass part.

Lisa Marie Presley New Interview: In a recent Huffington Post interview Lisa Marie talked of her early days with Elvis - and admitted that her son looks like Elvis. Asked if she saw a resemblance, she replied: "I think so. Sometimes a lot. It depends how he's fixing himself up. Yeah, without question actually."
Lisa Marie also discusses the recent Miley Cyrus controversial show at the MTV Video Music Awards and more..
About her "Don't Cry Daddy" duet and video.
Lisa Marie: It was a last-minute idea that I had one year. I called David Foster who did the Natalie/Nat King Cole duet. And then I just started this little tradition where I did "In the Ghetto" for the 30th anniversary and five years later I did "I Love You Because". It was a tradition for the fans. It's all for the fans. I haven't released anything to the public. We always gather in Memphis every five years. I'm always there so I try to |
|
do something for them.
About her favorite memories with Elvis and Priscilla together
Lisa Marie: With them together? I don't recall a lot of them together. I have a few with them together. I was with them mostly separately. The things I remember the most is that my room and his room are on the top floor of Graceland. So Elvis would set up an area for him to stay in my room and watch TV just to be near me, and I got to spend a lot of time with him alone up there which is sort of what I hold dear in my memories. It was like doing crazy things in the middle of the night, like taking me to the pet store getting me a dog... and then getting 50 other people a dog.
I really liked the times when I was alone with him. I got to spend a lot of time with him up there... I was always upstairs. I would kind of tip-toe by his room and try not to let him see me if I was up to something I shouldn't be up to. (Laughs) If Elvis had his door open and he was sitting up there, I would always try to sneak by as I was always in trouble or up to something. He would call my name out if he saw me out of the corner of his eye, and I would go into his room trembling because I was always up to something or I had broken something or I had done something that I shouldn't. Always.

'Love Me Tender' Blu-Ray Edition Review: Elvis' first movie now out on high-quality Blu-Ray in 1080 presentation. This release contains the same extras as featured on the 2006 50th Anniversary DVD release with the added commentary by Jerry Schilling plus short bonus documentaries. However since 2006 a large number of viewers have moved across to High-Definition viewing at home and enjoy the look of movies in their own Home-Cinema set-up.
'Love Me Tender' was always an oddity as the first movie vehicle for the King Of Rock'n'Roll - so is this BluRay upgrade really worth it?
Go HERE as EIN's Piers Beagley - with the help of Harley Payette - checks out this new Blu-ray release. Plus some cool Screen Grabs..
However at only $14 how can you go wrong? Let's hope this leads to Blu-ray releases of other Elvis movies.

UPDATED - 'Houston We Have A Problem' - CD review: From the Audionics label, a previously unreleased soundboard recording of Elvis' controversial matinee concert at the Summit in Houston on August 28, 1976.
The review by Bob Claypool has often been cited in Elvis literature, and the general consensus appears to be that this concert was a real disaster. Possibly detrimental to Elvis' glorious legacy, this 'import' CD is one of the most controversial releases of the year. Elvis was certainly on bad form on this afternoon, but was he really that terrible? SONY/FTD could never consider releasing this concert, yet it has to have a certain fascination to Elvis collectors.
36 years after his death, does Elvis' legacy still need to be air-brushed to keep its glory intact, or can we accept him for all his human faults?
Go here as EIN contributor Geoffrey McDonnell takes an in-depth look at Elvis' situation in summer 1976 and explains all.. and now UPDATED with Your Comments..

SuBo records duet with Elvis: Susan Boyle has recorded the duet with Elvis 'O Come, All Ye Faithful'. As the Daily Mail UK tabloid notes, "so that's Christmas number one sorted then!"
Susan Boyle is to continue her remarkable rise from obscurity to international superstardom by becoming the first British artist to record a posthumous duet with Elvis Presley.
The King of Rock ’n’ Roll and the Scottish singing phenomenon known as ‘SuBo’ will be heard together on O Come, All Ye Faithful.
She joins an exclusive list of singers, including Celine Dion, who have been allowed to posthumously duet with him.
Boyle’s Christmas album also includes renditions of Little Drummer Boy and a duet with Johnny Mathis of When A Child Is Born.
She said: ‘Christmas is still my favourite time of the year – I have fond memories of family Christmases growing up. |
|
‘To be able to put a unique twist on classic Christmas songs is truly wonderful.
'To sing with Elvis, well I didn’t think it would be possible – isn’t technology brilliant? I grew up with Elvis playing in my home. My father was a huge fan. This song is for him and his love of Elvis.’
Presley released 'O Come, All Ye Faithful' in 1971.
EIN point outs that 'O Come, All Ye Faithful' was recorded as duet with Olivia Newton-John on Elvis' 2008 "Christmas Duets' album. It was no doubt the weakest track. It would be very easy for them to remove the Olivia Newton-John and replace with it with SuBo!
Go here for EIN Review of the 2008 "Christmas Duets' album.

Demand for Elvis Impersonators isn't what it used to be: Good News, and Bad News as Las Vegas demand for Elvis impersonators dips. Tyler James is the official "Elvis" for the Las Vegas downtown tourist strip. Too bad for most in the Elvis tribute artist/impersonator world, this just isn’t typical.
GigMasters.com, a site that helps people book party and event vendors, features 198 Las Vegas Elvis impersonators. About 800 bookings have been made for them collectively in the past year.
That number is down significantly, about 21 percent, from 2011, but 2013 is tracking similar to 2012. Just a few years back, demand for Elvi was higher, like the sweet song of a choir; GigMaster’s requests for Elvis impersonators in the Las Vegas Valley doubled between 2008 and 2011.
“The people who get booked get booked very often,” GigMasters marketing manager Nicole Steeger said. Impersonators get paid anywhere from $100 to $1,000 per event, depending on experience. But newer acts seem to be having trouble finding work, she said.
Some think the decline has to do with aging baby boomers and a growing
|
|
population of millennials who just aren’t interested in the King.
“The whole Elvisy Vegas red carpet thing is, in my opinion, going out the door,” said wedding coordinator, “That whole era is getting older. Almost all of our older renewals want an Elvis wedding. Our younger brides do not want cheesy, flashy, Elvis Vegas. They want something nice in their budget.”
After all it’s been 36 years since Elvis died and his fan base is getting older.
“It’s inevitable. It’s unfortunate, especially for those guys who have big dreams of coming to Vegas,” ETA Jimmi Ellis said.
A steady Elvis gig is like a dream come true.
“My personal opinion is the number of tribute artists will always grow. There’s such a fascination with this man and his legacy and his life,” Ellis said.
“The business is not what it used to be,” he said. “There’s just not the demand.”

Elvis Still Rocking London Parliament: Twice as many people think Elvis is alive than believe Labour's Ed Miliband is a natural leader, a Conservative MP has joked in the House of Commons. Alun Cairns said a YouGov poll showed 2% of those interviewed thought the Labour leader was a natural leader.
The Vale of Glamorgan MP said this was half the percentage of people who believed Presley did not die aged 42 on August 16 1977. He made the quip to David Cameron during Prime Minister's Questions in parliament.
Mr Cairns asked Mr Cameron if the accuracy of statistics was vital to informing public debate. |
|
He said: "Are you aware that 4% of the people believe that Elvis is still alive - double the number we hear today that think [Labour leader Ed Miliband] is a natural leader."
Mr Cameron replied: "Well, I can see you have certainly put your summer to very good use and I'm grateful for your question.
"Obviously you need to see a run of opinion polls before you can see a true trend."

'Last Train to Memphis' movie director chosen: The new Elvis biopic 'Last Train to Memphis' is still in production with 'Marley' & 'Last King of Scotland' director Kevin MacDonald on board for Fox 2000. Based on the 1995 Peter Guralnick biography, the film chronicles Presley’s early years and his transformation from a high school kid to an overnight sensation credited with ushering in a radical new era in music.
Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman will produce through their Jagged Films banner along with Steven Bing, who will produce through his Shangri-La shingle. John Fusco is adapting the script.
The studio along with MacDonald and the producers will now begin searching for the young Presley, starting with a recently-launched website Young Elvis Presley where actors can submit audition tapes singing six to eight bars of any Presley song.
Jagger has been championing musical biopics lately, clearly a natural fit for the seasoned rocker and he’s also producing a James Brown biopic starring Chadwick Boseman.
Kevin MacDonald most recently produced the sensational music bio 'Marley' about Bob Marley.

Sony/ATV group is leader in EPE Bid: An investment group that includes Sony/ATV, the music publishing giant half-owned by the estate of Michael Jackson, is emerging as the favorite to acquire EPE from Apollo’s Core Media Group which is selling EPE assets along with the name and likeness of Muhammad Ali. According to a source other suitors, Universal Music Group and fashion merchandising giant, Iconix did not submit bids.
Sony/ATV, the music publishing arm of Sony, co-owned by the estate of the late King of Pop, already owns publishing rights to Elvis songs but pays royalties to the Elvis estate. Those royalties will no longer need to be paid if it succeeds in buying the assets from Apollo.
Any successful bidder will have to work hard to polish the Elvis brand, which earned $55 million in both 2012 and 2011, according to Forbes, down slightly from the $60 million it earned in 2010.
Record sales are not included in Forbes’ tally for Elvis, who died in 1977.
"Elvis is going to keep generating tens of millions of dollars a year, but I don’t know how easy it is to make those numbers go up." |

A movie about the King of Rockn'Roll (see above story) could fire up profits for the Presley estate, sources said, much like what "Walk the Line" did for Johnny Cash.
Any deals for Elvis, movie or otherwise, would have to meet the approval of the Presley family. Lisa Marie Presley retains a 15 percent interest in Elvis Enterprises, just as the Ali family holds a stake, about 20 percent, in the Ali assets being sold.

Collingwood Elvis Festival Loses Money: One of the biggest annual Elvis festivals at Collingwood, Ontario lost money this year mainly due to bad weather.
According to Ian Chadwick, who represents council on the Elvis Festival Board, preliminary numbers show the festival will lose about $40,000 using preliminary figures.
Festival general manager Rosemarie O’Brien said the numbers are still being calculated and couldn’t confirm a figure.
"We haven’t finished the numbers and I can’t tell you definitively to what degree, but there will be a loss," said O’Brien.
O’Brien blamed bad weather for the loss after rain during the weekend led to the closure of the beer gardens on Saturday. "We were wiped out pretty good, we only got opened for a few hours."
O’Brien said traditionally the beer garden generates about $120,000 in |
|
revenue over the weekend and Saturday is the busiest day. O’Brien said the numbers show strong ticket sales over the weekend.
This marked the 19th year of the Festival, which attracts more than 10,000 people to the area. The 2012 edition had $9,000 shortfall.
O’Brien noted that the festival also didn’t receive its Celebrate Ontario grant, which has received for the last four years. She said the festival has received between $21,000 and $75,000 for the festival through the grant program.

"Elvis Before Elvis" New Book: From author Adrian Keller - Before Elvis Presley made it "big" and shook the world, he worked as a truck driver for Crown Electric in Memphis, Tennessee. Crown Electric was then owned by James and Gladys Tipler, or Mr. Tips, as people close to him called him. As his employee for about thirteen months, Mr. Tips experienced the young Elvis, one that is less known to the world. Later on, Mr. Tips dissolved Crown Electric and in time he opened another business in electric supplies in Memphis, called Tip's Electric.
In the late 1980s Mr. Tips hired a young immigrant by the name of Adrian Keller, who came to Memphis because of Elvis, but for different reasons than one may believe.
Mr. Tips was generally reluctant to share his experience about Elvis and his employment at Crown Electric. With time, however, Mr. Tips developed a close relationship with the young immigrant, got to like him, and opened up to him. Adrian worked for Tip's Electric for about a year and four months. Over the course of about fifteen months, Mr. Tips shared with Adrian a wealth of memories and records about Elvis, how Elvis worked, how he was like during the day, the kind of work Elvis did, and many other things about Elvis never |
|
released until now. It was at Crown Electric that Elvis developed the working habits he later needed to maintain the gruesome working schedule he kept in Las Vegas and during most of his concert years.
This book, the first of its kind, is the record of Adrian's notes about Elvis, as shared by Mr. Tipler.
A riveting story, the book shines the first light on the young days of Elvis' life before stardom, and a completely unknown part of his life. Indeed, "Elvis Before Elvis" is true and factual history."

UPDATED - ‘Elvis At Stax’ [Deluxe] Reviews: More new sensational reviews of the new STAX release... the Herald-Review has posted yet another great review of the new STAX set.
... The dichotomy of Presley's career and life was the split between the R&B-loving revolutionary and the Southern gentleman who sang gospel, between the hip-swivelling rocker and the charming ballad singer. There was no interest by anyone - not his people, not his record company - of building a career for Elvis Presley. So there was never a concern about helping him release and market a fantastic album. RCA would sell its Elvis singles, and they could probably predict within 1,000 how many copies each album would sell, such would be the consistency of Presley's audience.
So Presley was never really an album artist in his lifetime. It was the concert recordings - especially from the 1970s - that exploded on the charts.
But of 28 songs recorded at Stax in 1973, six made the Billboard singles charts...
Exhibit one: "Promised Land." This song alone gives a person enough evidence that Presley was the greatest Chuck Berry cover artist ever. If you've heard "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" or
|
|
(especially) "Too much Money Business," you've heard Presley doing Berry great. But to hear "Promised Land" is to hear transcendence.
Exhibit two: "Raised on Rock." Written by Mark James, who also wrote "Suspicious Minds," Presley/RCA thought highly enough of the song to make it the title cut of a batch of the songs released on album.
Exhibit three: "If You Talk In Your Sleep." This is the revelation of the Stax set. Presley's final released was drenched in horns and strings, and made the Billboard top 20. But another version included on the new set is "take 5" of the song. It's filthy in a brilliant way. The band is slinky as it works around its arrangement, and Presley smolders in a way that's almost embarrassing in its intensity and intimacy. It's fantastic, at once reminding the listener what Presley was, and what he could almost be seemingly at will later in his life. If only he'd wanted to more often.....

La Crosse "Elvis Explosion" features Joe Esposito: Being Elvis Presley’s close friend came with perks. Joe Esposito befriended Elvis in the Army, and the decades that followed thrust Esposito into the world of entertainment. He worked as Elvis’ bodyguard and road manager. He worked on Hollywood movie sets. He was one of the few people in attendance during a quiet meeting between Elvis and the Beatles.
Esposito is scheduled to sign books at Elvis Explosion 2013, which kicks off this Friday at the La Crosse Center.
Elvis Explosion September 6th - 8th, 2013. 300 Harborview Plaza La Crosse, WI 54601
“To the day Elvis died, they were just best friends,” said filmmaker Tom Jikomes, who is working on a documentary with Esposito. “He describes Elvis as the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”
The three-day event is expected to draw thousands of Elvis fans,
|
|
interested in seeing one of the largest Elvis impersonator competitions in the country. Esposito will sign copies of “Elvis: Intimate and Rare,” a personal collection of never-published stories and photos.
Esposito’s books offer an uncommon vantage point into the life of a superstar, Jikomes said.
The two met while serving in Germany, after a game of football, and immediately formed a close bond.

Rex Martin Elvis Items Stolen - Buyers Beware: After Tuesday's note regarding the collection owned by super-fan Rex Martin (below) there is the terrible news from his family that the core of Rex Martin's collection may have been stolen while he lay dead on the floor. They note...
"It has now become clear that between the time that the police locked up Rex's home and the family collecting the keys from the police and gaining access, someone had entered Rex's home and removed some personal items (wallet, passport, and other significant items of particular interest to Rex's family) as well as the core of Rex's Elvis Collection. Since there was no sign of a break-in, it is believed that this person or persons had access to a key to the property. It is also evident that whoever did this had inside knowledge as to what Rex's rare Elvis Collection consisted of, where it was stored and where he kept his personal belongings. Since we know that Rex was very protective about his Collection and showed it to very few people, the list of possible candidates who could have committed this theft is small. This has been reported to the police.
... Furthermore, the family had decided to offer Rex's rare Super 8 (with
|
|
sound) cine film collection (some 60+ films made in person by Rex at actual Elvis concerts) to Sony in exchange for them making a donation to charity. Only 1 of these films has been recovered, so it must be assumed that the rest have all been stolen.
We would ask anyone who is considering purchasing Elvis items currently being offered on Internet sites to consider whether or not they may be about to purchase something that was stolen from Rex's home before it was decontaminated. Also, people who have already purchased items may wish to consider whether it may have been stolen and, if they believe it may have been, to consider reporting this fact to the police."
Anyone seeing Rex Martin items offered especially SUPER 8 for sale PLEASE contact Rex Martin's family via his website Moments In Time.

MTV awards 2013 'unfit for family viewing' Like Elvis 1956!: It was 30 years ago when Michael Jackson stepped on to the stage for Motown's 25th anniversary and moonwalked his way into superstardom. It was probably the top moment in Jackson's career, one that was filled with plenty of memorable moments.
Jackson was a showman, made from the same mold as Elvis Presley. Elvis was the innovator. In the mid-1950s, Elvis captured the nation's imagination with his singing and dancing. Elvis stirred up controversy in 1956 with an appearance on the "Milton Berle Show" when he shook his hips while singing his hit, "Hound Dog."
Elvis' performance was panned by critics and the most famous talk show host of the time, Ed Sullivan, said that Elvis was "unfit for family viewing." Of course, Sullivan later gave Elvis a ton of money to appear on his show, an appearance that drew 60 million viewers and more than 80 percent of the TV audience that night.
Both Jackson and Presley had their times when they crossed society's line for what stood as good taste. While Elvis shook his hips a little too much for people's liking in the 1950s, Jackson decided to grab his crotch while signing his hits in the 1980s. Quincy Herald |
|
commentator Dan O'Brien is as shocked in 2013 as the moral majority were back in 1956.
He suggests that... "Elvis and Jacko's supposed crimes are nowhere near as bad as what passes for entertainment these days. What in the name of Hannah Montana has gotten into Miley Cyrus?
Cyrus, a former Disney Channel star and the singing offspring of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, put on quite a show during Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards telecast.
Maybe it's a sign that I'm getting too old and out of touch with what's "cool," but I found the performance unwatchable. If Ed Sullivan thought Elvis was "unfit for family viewing," I'd love to get his thoughts on Cyrus' performance and what passes as entertainment these days. It's all pretty much garbage".

Every concert sold out in a few hours and extra concerts had to be added to meet the demand.
Elvis would play 154 concerts in 1974 and Tulsa March 1st would be his first outside the Las Vegas casino crowd, Cleveland June 21st would also be a fine summer performance to an enthusiastic audience.

She saw Elvis..and told Elvis to pose for a photo.. because she had one photo left on the roll.. and didn't want it to go to waste."

'Growing Up Graceland' New Director: Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (The Right Stuff, The Natural, Passion of the Christ) has directed just two features to date. Now 25 years after his last helming effort, Deschanel is eyeing his third trip to the director’s chair with the Elvis Presley biopic Growing Up Graceland, for upstart studio BiteSize Entertainment. The based-on-a-true-story pic is told through the eyes of Elvis’s younger stepbrother David Stanley, who moves with his family into Elvis’s famed Graceland estate after the singer’s return from the Army in the fall of 1960. Graceland will chronicle the bond between Elvis and his little brother as both siblings deal with the loss of their parents amid Elvis’s growing success.
Robert Boris (Blood Feud, Marilyn and Me) is adapting the script from Stanley and Dr. David Gruder’s bestseller 'Conversations with the King'. Stanley is producing through his own Impello Entertainment banner through which he previously wrote and directed his own 2007 Elvis film Protecting the King, also based on his life with his famous sibling. Financing is still coming together on the project as Oscar-winning producer and BiteSize cofounder Gene Kirkwood (Rocky, Gorky Park, etc) launches a search for an unknown to play the young Elvis. While Graceland is not a musical, Kirkwood plans on tapping Broadway and other talent sources looking for an actor with singing chops who can handle gospel tunes because Elvis "only sang gospel at Graceland."

Lisa Marie "I was pretty insulated": Surprisingly down-to-earth after a lifetime in the public eye, Lisa Marie Presley is a platinum recording artist in her own right. But she still wishes she had time to learn to knit.
Lisa Marie Presley, 45, will be in Seattle on Aug. 28 to perform at The Triple Door in support of her latest album, "Storm & Grace." The stop is part of the third leg of a tour that started last year and that has not worn her down a bit.
"I love it, I personally love it," Presley said the other day of life on the road. "I find it challenging and stimulating and exciting. The relationship with the fans, the reactions.
Presley spends most of her time in Tunbridge Wells, England, where she lives with her husband, the guitarist and producer Michael Lockwood, and their twin daughters, Harper and Finley, now four. Presley has two older children — the model and actress Riley Keough, 24, and musician Benjamin Keough, 20 — by her first husband, Danny Keough.
And yet, she still couldn’t get away from her father’s legacy.
"There’s a little shrine to him right near my house," she said. "He’s very much alive and well in England. I just like to have a life, different places to go, away from other things. I need to have options."
"Storm & Grace," released last year, partnered Presley with award-winning producer T-Bone Burnett, known for his work with everyone from Elvis Costello to jazz singer Cassandra Wilson to Washington state’s Brandi Carlile.
"It has all |
|
different things," Presley said. "It’s organic, more rootsy."
The video for one song, "Weary," was shot at Memphis’ Sun Studios, where Elvis Presley made some of his first records; where Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and U2 recorded; and where Bob Dylan famously kissed the floor.
"I didn’t kiss the floor," she said with a chuckle. "But it was really great, and we recorded three songs there."
Despite her father’s history with the place, Presley had never set foot inside Sun Studios before she and her band loaded in to perform three songs for a television show.
"I was pretty insulated," Presley explained. "My father was no longer recording there when I was around."
At home with twins, her two other grown children off in Los Angeles and the Elvis business that never seems to slow, Presley has little time for quieter activities like reading or knitting.
She has partnered with World Vision and is allowing the nonprofit to set up a booth at each show, where fans can choose to sponsor — and correspond — with a child in need.
The child of Graceland clearly knows how lucky she was.
"I like helping children," she said. "I have a big thing with children. You can correspond with the child, send something to them as a gift. You know it’s actually getting there and you are doing something to help. I just thought it was a good thing to do. I want to help them because they are helpless.
"But they are also the future. They are going to run the world."

Remembering the Day Elvis Died: A thoughtful post that will bring back similar memories for many Elvis fans.
TV reporter Steve Newvine writes ... I was twenty years old the night I heard that Elvis Presley had died at his home in Memphis. The date was August 16, 1977.
Over the years, I had bought each new Presley single. I saw the songs shift from rock-and-roll to more of a country-rock sound in the mid-1970s. It didn’t matter to me. I was a fan right on through to college where I studied to be a radio announcer and ended up being a television reporter. I even had a part time job at a radio station where I could play his records even as his popularity flattened in the last two years of his life.
And that leads to that night in August when I heard that Elvis had died. The disc jockeys I listened to that evening were paying tribute to the man who popularized the music of a generation. Radio was hosting a wake. Those of us who enjoyed the music took part by simply tuning in.
At 11:30 that evening, I moved from the radio to the television set in the living room. NBC was airing a half hour Presley retrospective with David Brinkley as the anchor. A friend of mine recorded the audio from that broadcast and gave me a copy. I have probably played that tape hundreds of times. I’ll never forget how David Brinkley kicked off the broadcast with what amounted to a reason why America cared about the loss of the rock-and-roll icon:
“It didn’t matter a great deal whether you liked Elvis or not. He changed our lives. So did a lot of other people change parts of our lives. Montovani played Charmagne. We heard it a thousand times on the radio, in
|
|
elevators and at the dentist office. But it didn’t change anything. Elvis Presley did. He changed the way that teenage America thought about things: public entertainment, popular attitudes, toward behavior and attitudes about dressing and sex. And so when he died today from a heart ailment at the age of forty-two, people felt a sense of loss whether they ever liked his singing or not.”
I got through that night thanks to the community of broadcasters who wouldn’t let this death go unnoticed. The fans kept up the outpouring of sympathy on through the funeral a few days later. That affection for Elvis has kept on going ever since.
Soon, we would read of allegations of drug abuse, physical decline, and just plain weird things that went on during those final years. The image of a slick rock-and-roll icon was tarnished for a long time.
But the music endured. And with time, the entertainment industry has found a place for the man who, as David Brinkley said so eloquently some thirty-six years ago, changed things.
We have Elvis Presley to thank for that as well.

'The Creeping Crud Express' New Import CD: Right after the release of the very controversial Houston, August 28th, 1976 show ('Houston We Have A Problem' - see details below), Audionics is back with another remarkable release with more previously unreleased soundboard material. This time, Audionics presents Elvis in solid form during his memorable May/June ’75 tour.
Elvis often wore different Phoenix jumpsuits in May/June ’75, and in a way that’s entirely appropriate. Compared with the fall of ’74, he looked fresh and rejuvenated, sounded great, and seemed genuinly happy about being on the road again. He was like a phoenix rising from its ashes.
Fortunately, the June ’75 tour is well-documented, and most of the shows have been released on soundboard. In this deluxe package, Audionics presents for the first time the unreleased afternoon show in Shreveport, Louisiana on June 7th, 1975 – a real killer show. Even though most of the shows on this tour have a similar setlist, it’s always a treat to hear a new show from this remarkable tour and to
|
|
hear unique moments - like different dialogue, fun interplay with the audience and of course small variations in the way he performs the songs or especially good versions. The audio quality of this soundboard is topnotch.
The Dallas show has been out before, first by RCA in 1980, and then more complete on import as ‘Dallas Seventyfive Uncensored’ a couple of years ago. We were able to obtain a superior and even more complete tape source, and it’s a joy to hear this fantastic show in excellent sound.
Presented in a deluxe double digipak with rare photos (some are published in color for the first time here) and relevant liner notes, this is another winner that every die-hard fan must own.
The Shreveport Evening show of the same day was issued by FTD last year - see detailed review here.

'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' UK COVER ART: Annouced today was the cover art for both versions of the new UK single and double CD versions of the album entitled 'The Nations Favourite Elvis Songs' out on 11th November, 2013. The single disc (cover right) will retail at £10.94 and the double CD (cover below) will retail at £11.74.
The Nation’s Favourite Elvis Song will be a 90 minute special to air later this year on ITV telling the stories behind the 20 greatest songs ever recorded by the King of Rock’n'Roll. EIN contributor Brian Quinn has checked with the UK Official Charts Company
today and they confirmed sales of both versions of the album will be added
together for the charts.
- As EIN contributor Brian Quinn notes, there are some fantastic tracks chosen though nothing out of the ordinary, and I am sure it will chart well. However Sony have yet again lost the opportunity of introducing the general public to some ‘relatively’ unheard of gems.

'Houston, We Have A Problem' New controversial Import CD: From the Audionics label, a previously unreleased soundboard recording of Elvis Presley's controversial matinee performance at the Summit in Houston, TX, on August 28, 1976.
Over the years, much has been written about Elvis' afternoon concert at the Summit in Houston, TX. on August 28, 1976. The review by Bob Claypool has often been cited in Elvis literature, and the general consensus appears to be that this concert was a real disaster. Some have even suggested that this show was Elvis' worst concert ever, and it has often been a hot discussion point amongst fans. Someone even wrote a book about the show.
And yet, no recording has ever turned up. Not even an audience recording. Much of what we have read so far about this show is based on the Claypool review. But reviews are always subjective, while an audio recording is obviously a more objective means to judge a performance. After a long and exhaustive search, Audionics was recently able to locate and purchase the original soundboard tape of this concert, and we are now pleased to announce its release. |
|
No doubt this newly-discovered recording will generate even more discussion on the message boards, as Elvis fans are now finally able to judge this controversial show for themselves.
The audio quality of this soundboard is topnotch, and the show itself is 80 minutes. The audience sounds like they were having a good time that afternoon, and it’s interesting to hear the one-off return of Jerry Scheff’s bass solo in "Polk Salad Annie" for the first time since 1972/’73. We believe that this significant release will lead to a more nuanced appraisal of this show in the future.
Presented in a deluxe digipack with unpublished photos and relevant liner notes, for hard-core collectors this is one release that you must own.

UPDATED - Remembering ELVIS in 2013: Thirty Six years ago, at 3.30 in the afternoon of 16 August 1977, Elvis Presley was pronounced dead at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. His girlfriend, Ginger Alden, had found his body a little more than an hour earlier, collapsed on the floor of his Graceland bathroom. He had had heart failure while siting down and reading a book entitled 'The Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus'. Elvis was only 42 years old.
However back at the start in 1956 within months of his arrival on the national stage, the godlike Elvis had destroyed the old showbiz order, rewritten the rules on young desire and initiated the era of the teenager.
BEFORE Elvis, there were no teenagers - older children were just adults in training, apprentices to the past; AFTER Elvis, there was youth culture, the most powerful commercial force in the history of the world.

When Elvis Presley came to Houston: Another cool article for Elvis' 36th anniversary - this time from 'The Texan'...
Today marks 36 years since Elvis Presley died at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn.. The rock idol was only 42 years old when he went to the great gig in the sky on August 16, 1977.
In honor of the anniversary of the King’s passing some great video and pictorial documents of Elvis’ visits to Houston that exist in our archives.
It was reported by Billboard that at an April 2, 1955, stop at City Auditorium for a "Louisiana Hayride" remote broadcast, 2,000 people were turned away. Presley was on the bill with Slim Whitman. The next day his pink Cadillac was stopped for speeding in Shreveport.
Elvis played two shows on October 13, 1956, at the long-gone Sam Houston Coliseum too, which we have a few pics from. Chronicle reviewer Dick De Pugh called Presley "the greasy, side-burned hillbilly," solidifying Presley’s rock and roll street cred for sure for the 8,000 fans there. The writer though, knew the titles to Presley’s songs.
He ended his review succinctly with "No one fainted. No one was injured."
After 1957, he dived into the U.S. Army, the movies, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, chicks, and other kingly pursuits before touring the U.S. again in 1970.
He kicked off that tour with six of those shows — two a day — opening the

1970 38th Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He would play in front of over 200,000 fans under the Dome, and stay at a $2,500 a night suite at the AstroWorld Hotel, which was claimed to be the most expensive in the world at the time.

The King ‘had such an importance and a deep impact on the history of music’: If the King of Rock and Roll was still alive, he would be 78 years old.
It’s incredible that nearly four decades after his death, Elvis is still an imposing figure, and it speaks to the impact he and his music, which first shocked a nation, are still making. Las Vegas played host to Elvis during his career as if it was his second home.
Elvis historian Cory Cooper explains..
"Elvis not only revolutionized the way we listen to music and for music to be accepted, but he set off hysteria felt around the globe. When Elvis came on the scene, black artists were not on white radio. Music was segregated; there were ‘race records.’ Elvis opened the doors for people to accept black music. People went back and discovered Little Richard and other fantastic black artists.
"It became so popular that legendary music producer Jerry Wexler changed the phrase from race records to R&B. Rhythm and blues was now accepted, and black artists were being recognized and went from local and regional acts to international stars.
From Paul McCartney and John Lennon to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, to Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, all were all influenced by Elvis. There was truly nobody like him. Elvis was a unique performer, and he was the American dream. He came from humble beginnings and became the biggest superstar in the world and sold more records than anyone else in the history of music.
All the while maintaining his gracious ways and manners and always

appreciating his fans. This is part of what endeared himself to the world along with his tremendous talent, charisma and showmanship. Younger generations are becoming Elvis fans because they enjoy what he was all about and realize his importance and iconic status in the history of music.
That is why Elvis continues to be so relevant and influential today. So, sit back, put on some Elvis music and enjoy your day."

The Candlelight Vigil 2013: Elvis Presley fans from around the world made their annual pilgrimage to Graceland on Thursday to pay their respects to the rock n' roll icon with a solemn candlelight vigil on the 36th anniversary of his death.
Thousands of Presley fans carried lit candles as they walked slowly and silently through the Mediation Garden at Graceland, Presley's longtime Memphis home. The garden is the location of Presley's grave and also is the spot where his mother, father and grandmother are buried.
Wreaths of flowers and pictures of Presley encircled the grave, while shadows cast by the glowing candles danced along the stone wall surrounding the garden. Soft music played in the mild night, as some in the procession bowed their heads or cried quietly.
Police estimated 35,000 people would attend the vigil. Last year, an estimated 75,000 people descended on Graceland when Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley appeared together at the vigil for

the first time since it began.
The vigil started as an informal gathering the year after his death. It has blossomed into a major tourist event. Fans begin lining up along the outer wall of Graceland about 12 hours before the vigil, and many will stay until the early morning hours of the next day.
The event also has become an international affair hosting fans from Australia, Brazil, England and Japan and other foreign countries.
Rodrigo Gandarillas, a native Chilean who now lives in Houston, said the vigil is a way to give thanks for the enjoyment Presley has given him. "The thing that impacts me the most about the vigil is the large amount of people from different countries, different races and different languages who understand 'the King's' musical message," Gandarillas said.

The ceremony for the 36th anniversary was organized as always by the Elvis Country Fan Club. The theme for this year's Candlelight service was announced the beautiful 1970 release 'Just Pretend'.
The weather was surprisingly pleasant, unlike the usual mid-August heat and humidity.

Marty Lacker On STAX: Marty Lacker was present at the Stax sessions in 1973 and makes an interesting point:
... I read the story quoting Ernst Jorgenson at the Stax listening party and it irks me when people who were not present when those things actually happened run off at the mouth with false information.
Elvis' songwriter deal with the Hill & Range publishing was really not over at the time of the Stax sessions because Freddy Bienstock was at the sessions with Tom Diskin and as usual Freddy brought along his usual shitty songs that he and Hill and Range as well as Parker had the publishing on.
That is of course why Elvis did some crummy songs within the two sessions and why he didn't do any Stax music that could have been supplied (why no Isaac Hayes/ Dave Porter compositions?) - because Parker and Freddy couldn't get a piece of the publishing on it.
The fact is that I got in an argument with Freddy because I brought "Lovin' Arms" "Raised On Rock" and "We Had It All" for Elvis and they didn't have the pubishing on them.
|
|
They didn't care how their actions effected Elvis personally or career-wise as long as they got their money.
- Marty.

EIN notes that we will be publishing an extensive article on the STAX sessions in the future.

UPDATED - 'Hot August Night' FTD CD Review: After the success of the iconic '68 Comeback Special - Elvis signed on the dotted line for a pretty penny - a cool million to perform a two week engagement in Las Vegas at the newly built International Hotel. Mixing contemporary songs and his classic rock 'n' roll hits Elvis and his dynamite TCB Band kicked some serious Ass in Sin City.
Elvis' stunning August 25 1969 Midnight Show formed the core section of Elvis' famous "In Person" RCA album with seven performances being selected from this fabulous night.
For the first time ever, at last FTD have released Elvis' complete performance - but do these songs stand out when listened to as part of this familiar 1969 Las Vegas season?
Go HERE as EIN contributor David Tinson checks out this new FTD release with newly added photos and extra discussion.
