Bono sees mirth in ‘Elvis girth’ in courtroom showdown: BONO may have had a quarter of a million people eating out of his hand in Croker over the weekend but it was his own dietary habits that engrossed a courtroom yesterday. At issue was the reason why the rock star had several pairs of the same black, high-waisted, three-quarter length trousers made up in different sizes.

“I don’t want to embarrass you,” began his inquisitor, barrister Hugh Hartnett, “but you put on a bit of weight.” Bono wasn’t about to combust in red-faced shame. He even saw a little mirth in his girth. “It happened to Elvis,” he said. “So you put on weight,” Mr Hartnett repeated, not about to let Bono’s comedy act steal the show.

'Jailhouse Rock' is Elvis' best, bar none: Elvis Presley was a bigger star in life than he could ever be in Hollywood. He was so good at being Elvis -- on stage and off -- that no fictional role could measure up. The King persona was better suited for home movies than big motion pictures, and that's why his lesser concerts hold up better than the better films. In the later films, it seemed that even Elvis knew he was betraying his music. So he quit Hollywood after starring in 31 movies, and when you look back at some of them, it was the right choice. Jailhouse Rock is one of the exceptions. The King's third film was the best showcase of his musical talents and, just as importantly, the best camouflage of his acting weaknesses. As Vince Everett, the moody young man who finds music while in jail, Elvis mirrors the handsome portrait that hangs on history's walls. The raw charisma, perfect hair and slender physique are all there. It's the Elvis everyone wants to remember.

And an audience is there to hear the voice that never left, too. Whenever possible, the script smartly manufactures a way to put Vince in front of screaming fans. He even performs on TV while in the stir, and after that he's everywhere. Perhaps The King's movies never matched his music because he preferred the instant feedback of a live audience instead of a director's counsel. As the brief narrative interludes between numbers remind us, he wasn't much of a technical actor. But his brilliant musical performance in Jailhouse Rock, particularly on the title number, is worthy of any Elvis concert compilation. Even when the audience is composed of paid extras, he knows when to stop to acknowledge the response.

Watching the film today, the campy contrivances to get Elvis out of his shirt or onto a stage are obvious. But while the story might be forgettable, Jailhouse Rock is an important part of the interesting and unforgettable story that was Elvis Presley's life.

New line of Elvis clothing: The second clothing line of Elvis Presley Enterprises will be unveiled in August with an upscale line and a U.S. department store line. The first Elvis clothing line flopped when it premiered in February, but after making changes suggested by retailers such as different pant-leg styles, the clothing line will reemerge, Forbes.com reported. The founder of Sasson Jeans, Paul Guez, the designer behind the old and new Elvis line, has invested millions in Elvis Presley Clothing. However, while the Elvis name continues to make money more than 25 years after the singer died, there is still a question which Elvis the clothing line will follow. While fashion follows the playboy Elvis in the movie Viva Las Vegas, much of the Elvis fan base is the age and size of the jumpsuited Elvis who performed in Las Vegas. Carol Butler, director of worldwide licensing for EPE, admitted the new fashion line with its subdued fashions and fitted clothing doesn't sit well with the traditional fan base. Fame in the frame: A new exhibition featuring portraits of stars - some in very unlikely poses - illustrates a trust between celebrities and photographers that has long since been destroyed by the rise of the paparazzi.

Veteran, Memphis-based musician Jim Dickinson likes to tell the story of the time Johnny Cash showed him a short film of the young Elvis Presley relaxing in Las Vegas: 'Elvis is wearing a gold suit and he has a Vegas showgirl under each arm, a bottle of champagne in each hand, and a big cigar sticking out of his mouth, drunk as a coot. Johnny said that Elvis offered him a small fortune for it, he was so scared his mom would hear about it.' According to Dickinson, Elvis the original rock'n'roll bad boy was also Elvis the fearful mummy's boy. 'In the Sixties, it was a known fact in Memphis that if you had a photograph of Elvis smoking a cigar, which he liked to do, he'd give you $150 for it. Bam! Just to keep his mother from seeing it.'

Forty years later, I am looking at a series of images of Elvis at play backstage at the Moulin Rouge nightclub in Munich that would surely cause his mom, Gladys, to turn in her grave. There are no cigars or champagne in evidence, but Elvis looks bad to the bone canoodling with two jaded-looking strippers who are all over him like a cheap suit. His unforgiving biographer, Albert Goldman, would later describe the same photographs thus: 'He allows himself to be taken with every ugly hussy in torn net-stockings and sleazy sateen leotard. As the dancers and hookers of this upholstered sewer entwine themselves about him, flashing manic grins, Elvis offers himself up like a lifesize dummy.' The photographs of Elvis and the strippers were taken in 1959 by Rudolph Paulini, the Moulin Rouge's in-house snapper, who promised they would never be seen outside the club. Unbelievably, that promise held for 20 years and, while the original snapshots faded and curled beneath the glass of the Moulin Rouge noticeboard, Elvis grew up and grew prematurely old, shedding his younger, wilder image to become the first totally stage-managed pop star. Paulini's graphic images, harsh and unforgiving in their delineation of excess and dissoluteness, are perhaps the last, and certainly the rawest, purveyors of Elvis the unreconstituted Southern wild boy, untrammelled and untamed. But they are purveyors, too, of Elvis's innocence and trusting nature, and of a long-gone time when the contract between snapper and star was often based on trust as much as mutual benefit, a time when the now all-pervasive power of the PR machine was still in its uncertain infancy. In this instance, Elvis trusted Paulini to be true to his word and, in doing so, defied for a brief moment his all-controlling manager, 'Colonel' Tom Parker, who, three years before, had instigated a draconian policy of image-control, denying all but the most servile photographers access to his suddenly world-famous charge. 'These snapshots of Presley in a sleazy club in southern Germany were a million miles away from the colonel's artfully constructed image,' writes curator Robin Muir in The World's Most Photographed, the catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery's imminent show of the same name. 'It was perhaps a glimpse of an all-American hero that Middle America was not yet ready for.'

Fifty years later, we live in a time when the snapshot rather than the posed portrait is the defining image of celebrity. The process of absolute control instigated by Parker in the Fifties, and insisted upon today by the phalanx of agents, PR consultants and managers that surround every celebrity, has, paradoxically, created a guerrilla industry specialising in the taking and disseminating of snatched images, often captured on the run or from several hundred yards away. "Elvis" in harmony with racing elite: When the curtain finally fell in Paris for the horse universally known as "Elvis", it brought to an end one of the most remarkable turf careers.
Sure, he wasn't a Northerly, although he won a Caulfield Cup; nor a Sunline, although he triumphed in the Dubai Duty Free, a race in which the champion mare was swamped. He wasn't a Saintly, although he kick started his autumn campaign with a first-up win in the Orr Stakes. And Makybe Diva, his great rival in a banner season, may have had his measure in the Melbourne and Australian cups. Despite those defeats, Elvis still boasts a better head-to-head record (4-2) with the dual Melbourne Cup winner.

None of the above champions can match the Herculean feats of Elvstroem. For that, trainer Tony Vasil deserves a curtain call. Pure Steel, the aptly named harness champ of the late 1970s, was feted for being as tough as tungsten. What Elvstroem has achieved this season, particularly on his world odyssey, makes "Steelo" look like a powder puff. Apart from December and January, Elvstroem raced in every month of the season. He relished the work, thrived on the challenge and repeatedly produced when the pressure, at the elite level on the world stage, was at its peak. In one remarkable 10-week period, Elvis contested five Group 1 races in five countries. As we have witnessed many times, it requires a horse with an iron constitution to handle overseas travel. Elvstroem took it all in his stride and was able to perform at his maximum. He flopped in the Hong Kong QE II Cup, where he didn't handle the reverse way, but Elvstroem either won or ran a place in the other starts. And it wasn't against ho-hum opposition. Even in his latest run, it took last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Bago to touch him out of third. Clearly, the Dubai Duty Free success was the defining moment. Elvstroem defied the "visitor's" draw and horses from seven countries to do what few horses do from the Dubai Duty Free start: lead all the way. During his marathon season, which included Group 1 wins in the Underwood Stakes and Caulfield Cup, Elvstroem earned a cheque in 15 starts. He made Frank Tagg and his co-owners $4,387,008. October FTD releases announced: The regular quarterly FTD release for October 2005 is a Vegas concert "soundboard" recording from August 1972, with bonus songs. It is tentatively titled Summer Festival. Also coming in October are two more releases in FTD's Classic Albums program, which reissues Elvis albums that are no longer part of RCA Records' mainstream Elvis catalog. FTD is considering several different options, but it looks like these reissues will be one movie soundtrack album and one studio album. Elvis shirt listed on ebay: A 1970s Elvis Presley worn and owned purple Velveteen pull-over shirt (with supporting documentation) is now available on ebay. With a starting price of US$500.00 (but higher reserve price) the ebay # is 7525638653. The shirt was given to Peg Homan. On June 22, 1978, Ms. Homan gave the shirt to St. Bonaventure Prep School in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, to be auctioned off at a school fundraiser. Elvis invited Suzi Quatro to Graceland: In an interview before her recent tour of Australia, rocker Suzi Quatro revealed how Elvis had invited her to visit him at Graceland. Suzi declined the invitation because she was so nervous at the thought of meeting her idol. With hindsight she regrets her decision. Lake George Elvis festival to return next year: Elvis may have left the building for this year, but the good news is he will be back. Organizers said the Lake George Elvis Festival was a success and will return in 2006. More than 50 tribute artists from all over the world participated this year. The weekend-long event kicked off on Friday with performances by the tribute artists, fireworks and a classic car parade. Organizers said they hope this festival will grow to be as big as Canada's Collingwood Elvis Festival in Ontario, which has an attendance of about 75,000. (News, Source: Capital News 9)

Circle G Resort project gets tax waiver: Horn Lake aldermen have agreed to waive some taxes on the proposed golf course and entertainment resort at the site of the old Circle G Ranch once owned by Elvis Presley. The 155-acre ranch, just south of Memphis, is where Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon in 1967. Under Mississippi law, developers of a "major theme park" or similar resort can recoup up to 35 percent of the amount they spend in capital improvements over the first two years of construction. The board of aldermen voted 3-2 Tuesday to give up all sales taxes generated by "qualifying" improvements. The Mississippi Development Authority decides what qualifies and it also determines how much of the construction would be recognized as completed within the two-year window. Engelbert sets the record straight: Engelbert Humperdinck has set the record straight about Elvis, saying "He didn't copy my image at all. The truth of the matter is this: I put my sideburns on in 1965...that's prior to Elvis, he did it in about 1972," says Humperdinck, who like Elvis was an important mainstay of Las Vegas clubs. He pinpoints the source of the confusion: "When he finally wore that famous white jumpsuit of his, an artist sketched him in it and presented it to him on a TV show...and he said, 'Hell, that's not me, that's Engelbert Humperdinck.'" Cory Cooper hits back at Paul Terry King about "Roses" song: Cory Cooper has responded to comments made by Paul Terry King on EIN yesterday. Cory says: "I saw the comments from Paul Terry King about me on your website and I wanted to offer my own comments on the topic. He contacted me when this all started, I had never heard of him or his song, he contacted me out of the blue and it was HIS idea, not mine, to be on some radio show together to debate the validity of his song and at the time, I didn't realize what a fraud he was appearing to be. The comments on his ebay listing that included me were made up and later he apologized to me and stated it was the publicists that wrote it. He has made strange comments to me like "You have been chosen" and "Fly with me" which I don't understand and when I told him he had Elvis' birthdate wrong on his song registration, he tells me he got the information in a book in Salem, Oregon. In some of his publicity it states he wrote "Love In The First Degree" for the country group Alabama, yet his name is not listed as a writer and then when I write to the bands Website, they tell me that there are two different versions of the song and his is not the one that Alabama used. The bottom line, NOBODY I've spoken to over this topic believes his story is real. Including, Ernst Jorgensen, noted Elvis Authority who is charge of the Elvis catalog for RCA/BMG Records and who has written books on Elvis. Three members of the Memphis Mafia do not believe his story and even Elvis Presley Enterprises say they don't believe his story. I'm not the one telling tales here, I've done my research to find out if his story is credible or not and from everything I've found, nobody believes it." "Live At The Park" begins Monday with Elvis impersonator: Holy Cross native Eddie Miles, who travels the nation performing tributes to Elvis Presley, will entertain crowds in Bardstown, Kentucky next Monday. Impersonating the King of Rock 'n Roll, Miles will kick of this summer's Live At The Park Concert Series at 8 p.m. The concert will happen against the backdrop of My Old Kentucky Home at J. Dan Talbott Amphitheatre, where many other artists will perform this summer. Miles will perform "A Salute to Country Legends" and end with "A Salute to Elvis." Miles was born and raised in Holy Cross as one of eight children. Along with his brothers and sisters, Miles attended talent shows and displayed his vocals at a young age. His mother was the catalyst for their love for music, Miles says on his Web site biography, www.eddiemiles.com. Growing up, his musical influences besides Elvis Presley were Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, George Jones, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater, the Rolling Stones and Motown.

Although Miles is now an experienced musician, he admits to still having stage fright from time to time. He prides himself in having traveled all the way to Memphis and seen Elvis in person, through a pair of binoculars, in front of his home. On his Web site Miles wrote to his fans, "When I think about Elvis standing perfectly still in those beams of sunlight, which were majestically shining through those huge trees, with his arms stretched out, in that purple and gold robe, head back, looking up into the heavens, looking God-like himself, I believe he was communicating with God, his maker, in prayer and meditation. It is a picture I will never forget." Miles also opened a theater bearing his name in Myrtle Beach, N.C., where he still performs from time to time, in between concerts throughout the country.

But what it really gets down to, most of them never even met or worked or had any connection at all with Elvis Presley!!!  I saved an email from this one where he wanted me to keep him in mind for a live national debate over the song which didn't occur. Sex kitten says "Elvis was a better lover than DiMaggio": There can't be many women who claim Elvis Presley and Joe DiMaggio as lovers and aren't shy about comparing their sexual prowess. "Elvis was much better," says Tura Satana, who hooked up with both icons after they saw her classy strip act in which she danced with a huge Buddha. "He was a very considerate lover and the old-type Southern gentleman, always saying 'yes, ma'am,' until I told him to stop because he was making me feel 100 years old. Elvis fans remember The King: The Lake George Elvis Festival put the rockin' and rollin' aside for few hours on its final day to honor the man who made it all possible in the first place. Dozens of people showed up Sunday for a prayer service and gospel music tribute to Elvis Presley. Organizers said they're "All Shook Up" just thinking about The King's influence on so many people's lives. Festival consultant Yvonne Price said, "A lot of people think it was just the rock and rolling, but the beautiful voice, inside the man himself he was one of the kindest people in the world, kindest people ever that was here. Will Elvis close the UN Anniversary Concert?: "Elvis The Concert" producer, Stig Edgren has been signed to produce an upcoming concert to mark the 60th anniversary of the United Nations on October 26th, 2005. The concert will be broadcast live on TV around the world and Edgren is said to  be very keen on getting permission from EPE to be able to end the concert with Elvis' 1968 performance of "If I Can Dream" with the TCB band and the Sweet Inspirations playing along live. New "alleged" Fort Baxter release questioned: We found this interesting posting from Mathias on the FECC messageboard - "Hi, I would like you to know that the new release "Kansas City Blues" from the Fort Baxter Classic Series is not from the original Producers. It's not even from the original Mastertape, the source they used was the original CD from the Profile Boxset. I was mentioned before (not by myself) that the artwork, design and overall layout looks pretty familiar and looking at it the Madison label comes right to your mind. I have no confirmation if Madison is behind the release, but I have confirmation that what was stated above is 100% true. I don't care who's behind it or not, I do like the new release for its artwork and improved sound.

Elvis postage stamp news: 2005, the 70th anniversary of Elvis' death has seen a flourish in the number of Elvis stamp sets released around the world. Countries which have released sets include several countries in Africa: Cameroon in Africa with a two stamp issue featuring profile shots of Elvis from the 1950s and 1960s. Other African countries are the Congo River which issued a four stamp set featuring full face pictures of The King, and Djibouti's four stamp 'Elvis movie' theme. Gambia weighs in with two 6 stamp 'movie' sheetlets, Liberia went "viva Las Vegas" in its 5 stamp set and the Somali Republic wasn't to be outdone, issuing a 4 souvenir sheet set. Criticism of EPE's "Elvis Insiders" club: EPE's Elvis Insiders club has come in for a barrage of criticism on Elvis messageboards. Formerly known as the Elvis Collector's Club, major criticisms are that it is "too US focused" and "overseas postage charges are far too high". Jazzy Willy's reborn as Elvis bar: Hugh's Jungle Room in DesMoines, Iowa, a new bar described by its owner as "a tribute to the King, as well as to that entire era," is scheduled to open July 15 in the former Jazzy Willy's building at 5715 Douglas Ave. Owner Hugh Duoblys said he's gutting the inside of the building and making it over in the style of Elvis' lair, complete with tiger-print carpet. The stage will remain for live bands and karaoke, and the bar will feature new booths, arcade games and dartboards. Duoblys hopes to organize a Jungle Room dart team to play in a local bar league. Elvis' honeymoon destination to become resort - might include 24-hour bars: The place where Elvis and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon is about to get overhauled. The newlywed Presleys spent their honeymoon at a 155-acre Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake, Miss., in 1967. The resort that's going up on that land will include 35-story high-rise towers, two golf courses, two hotels, entertainment venues and shops, and, if approved, 24-hour bars. 'The world' flocks to family's Elvis-loving restaurant: When you step inside Marlowe's Family Restaurant, more than likely you will be greeted by a friendly, attractive man, who, by the time he has escorted you to your table, already has learned the basics about your life. You have just encountered the owner, Tony Gigliotti of Germantown. Known for his eagerness to meet every customer, Gigliotti tries to live by what he preaches to his employees (most of whom have been with him a decade or longer) -- that a warm welcome makes for a happy customer. And happy customers always come back, as evidenced by the number of Marlowe's customers returning regularly since the restaurant opened on Feb. 27, 1974.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Gigliotti and his wife, Lucy, purchased the building at 4381 Elvis Presley, originally a car dealership, and named it The Ranch House. Later, they expanded it and renamed it after one of their daughters, Marlo (who was named after actress Marlo Thomas). As a lifelong Elvis Presley fan, Gigliotti decided to display his vast collection of memorabilia on the walls for other fans to enjoy. A jukebox filled with Elvis tunes plays six days a week, with Sundays reserved for gospel music. But the most eye-catching sights are the tabletops, which contain hundreds of photos, magazine articles, original newspaper clippings and documents detailing almost every event in the late singer's life, to the delight of Elvis fans, who are seen daily wandering from table to table, viewing everything with fascination.

Said Gigliotti: "I get a real kick out of sharing my collection with the fans. Elvis fans are the best people, and you can never get too much Elvis." The Gigliottis have three daughters. Lucy, who was a critical care nurse at Methodist Hospital for 18 years, said, "Marlo is our stay-at-home mom; Toni Lynn is a nurse, and Melissa is the one who is here at the restaurant, working with her dad." Missy (as Melissa is known) is perfectly at home handling the many responsibilities alongside her father and somehow managing to help run the nearby Rock and Roll Cafe with her husband, Mike Coleman. "Nothing is more important than family, and the secret to a happy life is doing what you love," Gigliotti said. "We have relationships with our customers that go beyond the normal; our regulars are very much a part of our extended family."

"Elvis Festival" this weekend: It may not be Graceland, but it will look like it in Lake George, NY, USA this weekend. The 2nd annual Elvis Festival kicks off on Friday. Thousands of the King's fans will descend upon Lake George this weekend for Elvis stage shows, tribute competitions, and an overall celebration of the rock and roll legend.
