"ELVIS 1969" PART 2: While the 50th Anniversary of Elvis' stunning return to live performances was officially celebrated last year, disappointingly there was no related documentary. Luckily, Elvis super-fan and EIN contributor Dennis Laverty has now followed-up his unique in-depth look at 'Elvis in 1968' with this new special, an exclusive two-part documentary focusing on Elvis' stunning year of 1969.
Released today July 31st, "ELVIS 1969 Part 2" continues Laverty's look at Elvis' Las Vegas "Return-To-Splendour" and much, much more.
The story is told by those who were there, including his band members, backup singers, song-writers, friends and family.
Featuring newspaper articles, home movies, archive footage plus unreleased footage from Elvis' 1970 'That's The Way It Is".
"ELVIS 1969" Part 2, released today includes rare archive interviews including Orchestra Leader Bobby Morris (I'd never see this interview before), George Hamilton, Priscilla, Sammy Shore, Henry Mancini, Sammy Davis Jr, Jerry Scheff, Shirley Bassey, Glen Campbell, Tom Jones, Del Shannon plus some wonderful home-video of Elvis on stage in 1969.
Settle down to another impressive two hours. CLICK HERE TO VIMEO TO VIEW.
While "ELVIS 1969 Part 2" has to feature a lot of 1970 material from TTWII to help explore Elvis' legacy back in 1969, fans can only blame Col Parker for that. How could such a monetary based manager not bother to film even 10 minutes of Elvis' comeback?
EIN THANKS Dennis Laverty for his dedication. WATCH THIS NOW, in case it disappears. We hope you enjoy it.

EIN Spotlight: Changing Times, Heavy books, and the two-class Elvis world: While a lot of fans believe Col Parker was bad for Elvis the one thing the Colonel usually got right was to look after the fans. From reasonable ticket prices, cheap licensed merchandise and assisting fan clubs, he worked with fans to engender good will and build interest in the latest Elvis releases.

In 2020, the situation is very different. EPE is owned by commercial interests meaning entry costs to Graceland, and buying licensed Elvis merchandise is no longer cheap - and importantly, no longer affordable for many who have been fans since the 1950s.

Another change is Follow That Dream, RCA-SONY, Eric Lorentzen, Venus, etc all now publish expensive "Deluxe" collections. Some costing US$350. Out of reach for most fans, so why is this?
The answer, of course, is money. There is obviously a neat profit in targeting the higher end of the Elvis fan market. In this respect, the proliferation of coffee table Elvis books is similar to the (admittedly) less regular annual Elvis box set extravaganzas from RCA/BMG/Sony. And, of course, plenty of the material in all these publications has usually been previously released but now include a few new additions or "upgrades" to attract customers.

EIN asked you to comment and we received a large number of replies, including a lengthy explanation from Eric Lorentzen. Reader comments include..
- I totally agree. Fans are being ripped-off, there is a money hungry frenzy going on in the Elvis world...
- Even Graceland has become too expensive for the general fan
- Fans are shocked by these new prices, many cannot afford it anymore
- I hope your article resonates with EPE and others that they are ruining it for middle class and poor Elvis fans.

Eric Lorentzen however adds.. "For the money? No way. Fans think that I and others do this only for the sake of money. But have they considered what the purchase of photos, printing, shipping and all other expenses are?"

Changing times, heavy books, and the two-class Elvis world: While a lot of fans believe Colonel Tom Parker was bad for Elvis (especially after he returned from the Army), the one thing the Colonel usually got right was to look after the fans. From reasonable ticket prices, cheap licensed merchandise and assisting fan clubs, he worked with fans to engender good will and build interest in the latest Elvis releases. When Elvis exploded onto the international scene all fans were equal and all could enjoy his records and his merchandise.

In 2020, the situation is very different. EPE is owned by commercial interests meaning entry costs to visit Graceland, staying at the Guesthouse, and buying licensed Elvis merchandise is no longer cheap - and importantly, no longer affordable for many who have been fans since the 1950s. To its credit, Elvis’ record company, established the enduring Elvis collector’s label, Follow That Dream, which started out releasing quarterly CDs before increasing the number of quarterly releases and then introducing coffee table book and CD sets.  While many could afford one CD each quarter, as the number grew to 2 or 3 a quarter, and were supplemented with expensive books, sales declined, but profit per item rose.

More recently, a number of fan clubs have entered the market with book and CD sets, including Erik Lorentzen, whose high quality Elvis Files books and subsequent releases have found an appreciative “niche” market. Like FTD, Lorentzen’s output accelerated and again many long time fans were left behind, unable to afford to buy the books. In addition, the FTD and Lorentzen releases are large and very heavy, another negative for those fans suffering from the onset of arthritis and other conditions.

By comparison, the MRS and Boxcar organisations have also released many excellent sets (books and multimedia) and generally these have been more attractively priced for the average fan.
Adding to the mix has been the dramatic rise in postal costs (globally) in the past decade, particularly to international destinations. In some cases, the cost of posting a heavy book can be higher than book itself, and if you live “downunder” ensure you have a happy bank manager!

In 2020, the FTD Elvis That’s The Way It Is 50th Anniversary, and Lorentzen’s Elvis That’s The Way It Was Vol 4 & 5 sets, are about to hit the market. Both are highly priced with the FTD release costing up to US$350 plus (including postage) for US and EC based fans, and considerably higher for those fans living in far away countries like Australia.

To buy both sets will set you back around US$450/350 UK Pounds/A$600…….. plus postage. And a 5kgs+ package is not cheap to post (and likely will come via one of the “charge like a wounded bull” logistics companies like DHL).

The Lorentzen set also begs the question – why another two volumes when the initial three volume set contained around 2,000 photos? And why such a high price (around US$200 not including postage)?

The answer is money.

Times change – the 1950s with its simpler, cheaper and more equitable economy, has been replaced by overstuffed corporations and Wall Street like greed. Sadly for Elvis fans, the

passage of time and rising standards of living have also created a two-class Elvis society. One class is higher income fans who can afford generally high quality Elvis product, and the other class who cannot, instead having to satisfy themselves with dreams of yesteryear, the umpteenth $10 Elvis album reissue, and the odd trinket or roadside Elvis on velvet offering.

EIN is not sure what Elvis or even the Colonel would have made of this, but we do know Elvis wanted his fans to be treated equitably and the Colonel knew this was a key to driving ongoing interest in the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. That so many fans can no longer enjoy much of the best Elvis product symbolises an Elvis world that is not what it used to be.

Elvis Matters - Ups The Price!: EIN has had multiple complaints from fans over the way the Elvis Matters Shop has treated them over the Pre-Order of the new FTD 'TTWII' Deluxe set.
These include fans in Canada and Australia.
Elvis Matters Pre-order was (as EIN advertised) €220 plus postage overseas - which for Australia originally came to US$280 and orders were accepted.
Now Elvis Matters have written to fans demanding another US$37 for added postage costs that they miscalculated.
As a shop they should have honoured their Pre-Orders at the stated original price for fans who jumped in early (as other On-Line shops do).
They could then have increased the price to the higher value from the moment they realised their mistake.
The worst part is that Elvis Matters is also demanding "The extra 1,86 PayPalcost." So ELVIS MATTERS expect the customers to pay the extra "PayPal Processing Cost" for their mistake.
Overseas fans watch out!
Basically fans should buy it closest to manufacture (Denmark / Europe) and then look for best value postage to your home.

UK's Todd Slaughter Still thinks Col Parker was a good manager: Once again the UK's Express are stirring up the Elvis legacy.
They recently checked in with UK Fan Club President Todd Slaughter as to whether Colonel Tom Parker a good manager.
... Elvis fans have not often looked on Colonel Tom Parker with fondness. Colonel Tom has been accused by many of mishandling Elvis’ affairs, even to thw extent where he allegedly took an exorbitant amount of his profits.
However Todd Slaughter, the head of the largest Elvis fan club in the UK, had a different view of the late manager.
Speaking to Express Uk, he said Colonel Tom wasn’t who many depicted him to be.
He said: “Colonel is depicted as a Svengali character and, to be fair, most managers of
popstars over the years have been more than a bit dodgy… Colonel Parker was possibly no different from that but he really did work hard for Elvis. Even when Elvis was on tour, he went to the next town, he made sure the radio, the TV were aware that Elvis was arriving. He even put additional posters up, even if the venues were sold out, because what he was doing was selling Elvis.
He was dedicated to promoting Elvis.”
According to Todd, a few managers of the time may have done some dodgy things, but clearly Colonel Tom is not quite the man many have thought.
He continued: “As far as the British fans were concerned, he was better than most managers were because he really did take time to meet the fans.
To me, personally, he was very, very nice. So I saw a different sort of Col Parker from how many people possibly believed he behaved.
“It was claimed he took 50 per cent of Elvis’ earnings which was not true. He took 25 per cent which, at that time, was the industry standard.” Instead, Todd claimed Colonel Tom took a 50 per cent split of licensing and merchandise, rather than his earnings.
EIN Note: Todd Slaughter needs to explain why in the 1979 Memphis Court Case of Lisa Marie Vs Col Parker Judge Joseph W. Evans wrote “the compensation received by Colonel Parker is excessive and shocks the conscience of the court.”
Attorney Blanchard Tual spent four months looking into Parker’s financial dealings. He speculated that Col Parker had sold Elvis cheaply to the Hilton to help pay off his gambling debts which were often said to be in the millions. It was also noted that by the 1970s Elvis’ RCA royalty rate was far below any other performer at his sales level.
Tual concluded  that both Colonel Parker (and RCA) acted in collusion against Presley's best interests. Colonel Parker was guilty of self-dealing and overreaching and had violated his duty to both Elvis and to the estate. "These actions against the most popular American folk hero of this century are outrageous and call out for a full accounting from those responsible."
Over to you Todd.....

Norwegian Elvis IMP Sets World Record: Finally a happier story showing that ELVIS' legacy can still bring joy and charity.
Norwegian Elvis impersonator - Kjell Elvis - set a world record on Saturday by singing the legendary entertainer's songs for more than 50 hours straight in an online competition and called on fans to support a hospital in Myanmar.
Kjell Henning Bjornestad, whose stage name is Kjell Elvis, sang non-stop for 50 hours, 50 minutes and 50 seconds, smashing the previous record, recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, by more than seven hours.
The title of the previous Elvis champion, a German by the name of Thomas "Curtis" Gaethje, had remained intact for more than 16 years.
"I'll never do this again", Bjornestad, dressed in an Elvis costume, told Norwegian television after completing his performance early Saturday in an Oslo bar.
His manager said Kjell Elvis, who sang through two days and two
nights, had been told to go easy on the coffee, and to rely instead on smoothies, fruit and energy snacks to keep his voice in shape while staying the course.
He did, however, sound increasingly hoarse during the final hours.
Bjornestad, who is 52, had set two Elvis singing records before. He called on fans to make donations during the event which are to be used in part to finance a hospital in Myanmar.

Scandalising Elvis – Albert Goldman’s Elvis: The most significant effort to scandalize Elvis Presley was Albert Goldman’s Presley biography, Elvis. The book was not initially conceived by Goldman but by the music entrepreneur, Kevin Eggers....... On the strength of his Lenny Bruce book, he received a $1 million advance from McGraw-Hill to write a biography of Elvis Presley...... Elvis’ friend, Lamar Fike did the legwork and three men shared copyright. The book was a well-researched piece. Compared to 75 interviews Jerry Hopkins conducted for his second biography, Elvis: The Final Years, Goldman claimed he had managed 600, a figure not to be approached again until Guralnick’s first book in 1994. Despite this, Goldman missed several key players including Elvis’ main doctor (George Nichopoulos), Charlie Hodge, Joe Esposito, Vernon, Priscilla and the Colonel. Yet somehow assessing Goldman’s Elvis by its groundwork seems the wrong way to adjudicate it. Its author’s 1994 New York Times obituary summed up:

Mr. Goldman’s Elvis (1981), an epic-length work written in a super-charged, impressionistic prose style, provoked howls of outrage from fans of the rock legend, who saw their idol portrayed as a self-indulgent, barely talented rube with perverse sexual inclinations and enormous (and enormously vulgar) appetites, including a gargantuan (prescription) drug habit.

Goldman had essentially acted like an enemy agent on the terrain of another man’s life with a mission to sever all empathy with his victim.

His special method was to find rock stars large enough to attract public curiosity beyond their fan base, then craft a hatchet-job biography and become infamous in the process. He deductively pushed a figment of Elvis Presley’s image so far beyond its source that he came up with something different altogether. Elvis was portrayed through contradictions as a living corpse with a morbid grasp on his girlfriend’s arm, a Frankenstein’s monster.

The preceding was excerpted from the impressive new academic book, Elvis Roots, Image, Comeback, Phenomenon, by Dr. Mark Duffett. EIN’s interview with Dr. Duffett and a review of his book are coming soon.

Lea Anderson – ELVIS LEGS: Lea Anderson MBE is a British choreographer and artistic director. With Teresa Barker and Gaynor Coward, she co-founded The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs dance companies, with which she has choreographed over 100 works. One of Anderson’s most accessible works, Elvis Legs marks its 25th anniversary with a special quarantine edition in Britain.
Exactly as the title says, it’s a piece made up of all the Elvis Presley dance moves the original cast could find, mixed up into a new routine.

Some of the shapes scream the King, some are more surprising, but it’s all 100% Presley, and a lovely bit of intertextuality. In this lockdown version, nine stripy-shirted dancers (plus a cameo by Dylan the Cat) thrust and pose in their separate on-screen cells, which is very Jailhouse Rock.
The perfect dance for the medium.

Elvis' Sun Sessions Martin D-18 Guitar Auction: WOW, this is incredible. Described as "Elvis Presley’s most important guitar ever to come to auction" this is his historic 1942 Martin D-18 guitar, Serial Number 80221, which he owned between 1954 and 1956, is often referred to as his “Sun Sessions” guitar. Elvis used this actual guitar extensively while recording at the iconic Sun Studios in Memphis, TN and while performing on stage during this period.  He can be seen playing the guitar in many, many photographs from this time, two of which are featured here. Elvis purchased the guitar at O.K. Houck’s Piano Store in Memphis, trading in his Martin 000-18. He decorated the body of the guitar with adhesive metal letters spelling out his name, "ELVIS". The letters "ELVI" remain with the "S" missing. The extensive wear visible on the guitar due to Elvis’ hard strumming is testament to its considerable use by Elvis. During this period Elvis recorded some of his most classic songs, songs that catapulted him into his meteoric rise to fame, including “That’s All Right”, “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and many more.
This historic guitar is currently on display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and was the first major exhibition in an art museum

dedicated entirely to the iconic instruments of rock and roll.
The guitar comes with extensive documents of provenance including: 1. A photocopy of a receipt from O.K. Houck Piano Co. 121 Union Avenue Memphis 3, Tennessee, September 11, 1956. 2. Photocopies of correspondence from the curator of the Country Music Hall of Fame And Museum, Nashville, Tennessee. 3. A photocopy of an affidavit from the owner of the guitar between 1956 - 1991 confirming the provenance. 4. Historical Notes About Elvis Presley's Martin D-18 Guitar from Mike Longworth, Historian at C.F. Martin & Company Inc., Nazareth, PA, August 12, 1991. 5 Various photographs of Elvis playing the Martin D-18 guitar between January to June 1955 - most featuring Elvis with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, his two recording partners at Sun Records, on their 1955 tour of the South and Southwest States at the Blue Moon Boys. Plus Gotta Have Rock & Roll™ Certificate of Authenticity.

It is of course gonna' cost you millions!

Priscilla talks about the death of Ben Keough: Priscilla has for the first time spoken out about the tragic death of her grandson Ben Keough. It is nearly two weeks since Ben was found dead at the LA home of his mother, Lisa Marie.
The LA County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office has since confirmed the death was a suicide. He was 27. Priscilla posted yesterday on Facebook noting that the death has impacted her family greatly... "These are some of the darkest days of my family's life. The shock of losing Ben has been devastating. Trying to put all the pieces together of all the possible whys has penetrated my soul.
Each day I wake up I pray it will get better. Then, I think of my daughter and the pain she is going through as she was a doting mother. Ben's father, Danny, who is completely lost, as Ben was his only son. Riley, so loving and so close to him; Harper and Finley, who absolutely adored Ben. Navarone, who struggles deeply with loss and death.- "Rest In Peace Ben, you were loved."

Ben was Elvis' only grandson, the only son of Lisa Marie and her ex-husband, Danny Keough.
Also a musician, Ben was adored by his big sister, actress Riley Keough, and younger half-sisters Harper and Finley Lockwood, as well as Priscilla's own son, Navarone Garibaldi.
Riley Keough, Ben's 31-year-old sister, also penned a heartfelt tribute following his July 12 death.

"Mornings are the hardest. I forget you're gone. I can't cry because of the fear that I will never stop. A pain that's new to me. You. There are no words for you. Angel is the closest I could think of. Pure light. Baby brother. Best friend. Wild man. Intellectual. Witness to my life. Twin soul. Protector. Too sensitive for this harsh world.
I hope you give me strength to endure the giant hole you've left in my heart. I hope you give me the strength to eat. I hope you're cradled in love. I hope you feel my love. I hope you feel god. You are god. I can't believe you've left me. Not you sweet Ben, Ben. Anyone but you. I guess this is true heartbreak. I hope we meet again."

"Virtual Elvis Week" EPE Announcement: As EIN suspected EPE have had to announce BIG CHANGES to the scheduled Elvis Week 2020. This includes the cancelling of LIVE shows and usual live "Conversations On Elvis".
Fans who were hoping for huge celebrations and concerts for the 50th Anniversary of TTWII  will surely be disappointed. However overseas travel to the USA is banned for many countries including Australia so the Memphis celebrations would have been sadly deserted.
EPE note, all programming will be now be pre-recorded - LIVE appearances are cancelled - and the Schedule of Events is no longer available as they try and work out what to do.
The suggestion is more for a "Virtual Elvis Week" costing $39.
EPE posted, Thank you for your tremendous patience as we navigate Elvis Week planning during these unprecedented times. It was our hope that we could safely host a full and robust Elvis Week, but as the COVID pandemic continues to evolve and health officials learn
more about high-risk activities, we must evolve with them. There is no greater priority than the health and safety of our guests and employees.
Given the current circumstances we have decided to significantly modify Elvis Week, eliminating any potential high-risk activity, including live performances, live appearances, group parties or meals, autograph signings and meet & greets.
Our soon to be posted Elvis Week 2020 updated schedule, and first-ever Virtual Elvis Week option, will allow fans to participate in Elvis Week and celebrate the life of Elvis in the way they deem most appropriate.
Those planning on attending will enjoy a series of daily screening events between August 8-16 that fully comply with recommended government protocols.
Attendance will be capped to meet or exceed social distancing and max capacity guidelines.
All programming will be pre-recorded and a blend of new panels featuring those who knew Elvis, new interviews with Elvis tribute artists, new content pieces from the Graceland Archives, and specially edited concert shows that look back on Best Of Elvis Weeks past.
The Candlelight Vigil on August 15 will be more limited than in past years, and will require free advanced reservations, but the longstanding tradition will carry on with a socially distanced fan procession to Meditation Garden.

Ed Hill Has Died: Ed Hill of The Stamps sadly passed away July 13, 2020. Edwin Lee Hill, son of a minister, was born in St. Louis, MO, and started singing at the early age of 15 with a group called “Humble Hearts” followed by The Prophets Quartet which would become regulars on the Gospel Singing Caravan TV series with the LeFevres, the Blue Ridge Quartet and the Johnson Sisters.
After Ed retired The Prophets, he enjoyed a lengthy tenure with Hovie Lister and The Statesmen. J.D. Sumner of the Stamps Quartet asked Ed to manage his talent agency and music companies, and in 1973 was asked to sing baritone temporarily until a permanent voice could be acquired. This "'temporary” would become five years fulltime with the Stamps Quartet and with Elvis Presley.
In 1987, J.D. Sumner reorganized the Stamps Quartet from his existing Master’s V group, and J.D.
again asked Ed to become a member of his group. According to J.D., Ed was “one of the best quartet men I ever worked with.”
Ed, along with The Stamps were permanent members of the Elvis Presley Show until Elvis’ death in 1977.
Around 1974 Ed Hill took over Al Dvorin's roll of announcing the end of every show.. “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and good night!” . . . it was none other than Ed Hill himself.

Ben Keough, Elvis' Grandson, Dead aged 27: Elvis' grandson and son of Lisa Marie and musician Danny Keough, Benjamin Keough has died of an apparent self-inflicted gun-shot wound
Lisa Marie's manager reported that,  "Lisa Marie is completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11-year-old twins and her oldest daughter, Riley. She adored that boy. He was the love of her life."
LA media report that Keough died Sunday in Calabasas, Calif., from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Keough also was the brother of actress Riley Keough and son of musician Danny Keough. (Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough divorced in 1994.) His maternal grandmother is Priscilla Presley.
Benjamin Keough at one point tried to follow in his famous grandfather's footsteps signing a $5 million record deal with Universal in 2009 to record up to five albums. It's unclear what came of that deal, but no albums were released.
After that Ben has kept a low profile throughout the years, but is often mentioned for looking very similar to his famous grandfather.
Keough also has twin sisters, Finley and Harper Lockwood, 11, whose father is Lisa's ex-husband Michael Lockwood.
Ben reportedly inspired his mother's 2012 song 'Storm & Grace' (his middle name is Storm). The song's lyrics include: "You have the most beautiful heart/That I’ve ever known/It kills me you can’t ever show it/And a shell has been grown."
The vast Presley fortune has dramatically dwindled in recent years, with Benjamin’s mother Lisa Marie claiming her former business manager squandered her entire share of Elvis’ $US100 million ($135 million) fortune.
The most recent photo of Benjamin on his mother’s Instagram account was posted in June of last year. It shows Lisa Marie with her two older children, Benjamin and Riley, alongside her younger twin daughters from her fourth marriage to guitarist Michael Lockwood.
“Mama lion with cubs” she captioned the sweet family group photo.
In 2012, Keough and his siblings all were featured in the video for Lisa Marie's "duet" with Elvis of his 1954 song "I Love You Because” through archival footage.
It featured the Presley children though the ages. Now the lyrics seem all that more poignant..
No matter what may be the style or season,
I know your heart will always be true.
I love you for a hundred thousand reasons,
But most of all I love you 'cause you're you.
The poor family, money and fame do not necessarily bring happiness.
Twenty-Seven is a troubled age for young adults having to deal with fame and fortune, musicians Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and Rolling Stones' Brian Jones all died at this age.

Jerry Hopkins 'Elvis: A Biography' Re-Publish: Plexus Publishing is for some reason reprinting Jerry Hopkins 'Elvis: A Biography' for 2021.
They note... Jerry Hopkins 'Elvis: A Biography' was the first book on popular music to top the U.S. bestseller list, and its sequel was equally popular. Long out of print, both books, along with a wealth of exciting new interviews, are brought together in Elvis to form the most exhaustive account available of the King's life. Telling the complete story of Presley's rise and fall, from his poverty-stricken childhood in Tupelo through his musical development and emergence as pop's first superstar to his decline and death, the book explores Presley's singular appeal, his far-reaching influence, and his extraordinary legacy. Featuring newly published first-hand interviews with people close to Elvis - including high school teachers, girlfriends, directors, agents, recording engineers, bodyguards, sidemen, karate instructors, medical professionals, and even his personal jeweler - Elvis presents a comprehensive and amazingly intimate look at this cultural icon.
The original book was reviewed as..
'The early chapters, recounting Presley's transformation from bashful youth to supreme performer are almost as exciting as listening to the music.' - Evening Standard
'With a rare combination of seat-of-the-pants reporting and thoughtful portraiture, Hopkins creates a richly nuanced picture of a world in flux.' - Peter Guralnick, author of Last Train to Memphis
Sadly EIN found that the first 2009 reprint was riddled with inaccuracies and dumb errors - EIN doubts that this 2021 version will be any better.

'Legends of Rock & Roll - Elvis Presley' New Book: Yet another self-published book about our hero. Author James Hoag (who has previously published "Legends" books about Neil Diamond, George Jones, Everly Brothers etc) has now published 'Legends of Rock & Roll - Elvis Presley'
.. Elvis is a name that is as well known today as it was 36 years ago when he died. (EIN - 36 years ago!?!?) Why another book on Elvis? This book, like the other Legends of Rock & Roll books, is a labor of love for the author. Music has been a guiding factor in my life for the past 50 years and Elvis was a big part of that. I love sharing my feelings about the music and about the man. Elvis Presley was born dirt poor and through talent and shear will power, became a multi-millionaire and helped create a genre of music which still exists today. This book is about Elvis the man and Elvis the singer, but even more importantly, it's about the music. This series is my way of honoring the people that have brought so much joy to our lives over the years. Elvis defined the meaning of rock and roll for a generation. This is an unauthorized fan tribute.
EIN notes: It is interesting to see one comment about his Neil Diamond book "The first thing I noticed in this book is that Neil Diamond's birth date is incorrect, should be 24 January 1941 not JULY!"
Let's hope he does better with Elvis' legacy!

Graceland archives & Bill Belew: Graceland may be open but Angie Marchese is still sharing more from the Graceland Archives.
In the recent episode fans can check out the work of Elvis costume designer Bill Belew.
It was in June 1968 that Elvis met Bill Belew on the set of the NBC TV special and he would then go on to make the iconic black leather outfit for Elvis.
Among the most famous of Belew's Elvis jumpsuits are the American Eagle and the Peacock. He also designed the suit Elvis wore at the famous meeting with President Nixon.
In the video, Marchese shows the receipts for some of Elvis jump suits and other items worth thousands of dollars.

ELVIS Biopic to Restart ASAP: Tom Hanks is expecting to head back to Australia in October to resume filming Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic. The movie had been in pre-production back in March, when the Queensland shoot was shut down after Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, both tested positive for the coronavirus.
They were briefly hospitalised and quarantined while they recovered, before returning to their home in Los Angeles, where they have been donating plasma to help medical researchers find a cure.
Hanks has said they are aiming to resume filming in three months. "There is certainly a plan and a desire from the studio's perspective and from everybody else involved in the movie to figure out a way to make it happen," Hanks recently told the Sydney Morning Herald.
"There are dates on the calendar that say maybe we will be making this movie in October, but all of
that stuff is a 'maybe' as questions about quarantine and sterilising soundstages and all of that go on.”
However, the Government says that the country's borders would still remain closed to travellers from overseas for "quite some time" in an effort to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.
Luhrmann's musical biopic, also starring Austin Butler as Elvis, is scheduled to be released in November 2021.

Charlie Daniels Dead at 83: Singer-songwriter Charlie Daniels, best known for the million-selling "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" has died of a stroke aged 83.
Daniels name came to fore when he played bass and guitar on Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline LP. Dylan's 1969 album was produced by Bob Johnston. The Elvis connection is that Daniels co-wrote the beautiful "It Hurts Me" with Bob Johnston (who actually submitted it under his wife's name Joy Byers).
Elvis recorded "It Hurts Me" in January 1964 and it was released as the flip-side to his 'Kissin' Cousins' single.
As the leader of the Charlie Daniels Band, with his fiery fiddle at the forefront, Daniels paved the way for the mainstream country-rock success of his group and others including Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd. His 1979 "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" won a Grammy.
He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
When Daniels performed 'It Hurts Me' live in 2018 he noted that Elvis' 1935 birth changed the course of his own life when the King of Rock & Roll recorded his song at Nashville's RCA Studio B.

New book announced - Elvis Gun and Weapon Collector: An Illustrated Compendium: Prolific photo-journal publisher, Paul Belard, has advised EIN that his latest book, Elvis Gun and Weapon Collector: An Illustrated Compendium is with the printer, and should be available in September (COVID-19 restrictions mean book print runs are currently being significantly delayed).
EIN saw an early draft of the book (200+ pages) and was impressed by the large sized, full color images of hundreds of Elvis’ rifles, revolvers, pistols, German dress swords, knives, machetes, daggers, bayonets, etc. Many of the items on display are accompanied by detailed background information.
Elvis had a great passion for collecting weapons, and as a record of this
passion, Elvis Gun and Weapon Collector: An Illustrated Compendium will be an important and visually imposing release! - Those interested can contact Paul Belard for more info.

Strong reaction to 'ELVIS: A Plan of God & SUN The Magic of Without You': Darrin Memmer has released three new Elvis books in the past month. One in particular, ELVIS: A Plan of God & SUN The Magic of Without You, has met with high praise from buyers.
From its stunning cover image to fascinating “new” information about Elvis’ Humes High Talent Show appearance (it wasn’t what we all thought!), and several of Elvis’ recordings at SUN Studio, plus a thought provoking discussion of the Elvis and the Big Mama Thornton race issue, EIN recommends ELVIS: A Plan of God & SUN The Magic of Without You as one of 2020’s best Elvis book releases.
Other highlights in the book include who actually recorded Elvis’ first demo at SUN Studio, the “back story” to the only known photograph taken by Gladys Presley, a ticket from Elvis’ Humes High Talent Show appearance, and the “auditions” for the Talent Show!!

Why We Should Take Elvis Fans Seriously: In what is a wonderful example of people-power, this EIN spotlight shines a light on how Elvis fans united to successfully prevent the demolition of the Lauderdale Courts in 1995.... a proposed demolition which, at the time, was supported by EPE!

Back in 1995, the Memphis Housing Authority proposed to raze Lauderdale Courts, a downtown housing project, as part of a larger “dedensification” program led by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The tearing down of Lauderdale Courts proved particularly contentious as it would would render many people homeless but what drew the greatest attention was the fact that a teenage Elvis Presley and his parents had lived at Lauderdale Courts from 1949 to 1953.
Enter three well-informed Memphis-based Elvis fans, Mike Freeman, Cindy Hazen, and Georgia King... now read on to find how one of Elvis' key historic sights was saved by Elvis-Fan-power.

The new set can be pre-ordered at The Elvis Shop London - priced at £149.99

Elvis News from earlier this week ...

Bud Glass is proud to announce the release of the first episode of his new web-based video series ELVIS: BEHIND THE IMAGE.

“DOUBLE TROUBLE” is the title of episode 1 - and the title is definitely an understatement as to the mayhem that ensues in this exciting, action-packed, true-life story.
As the teaser video stated, “Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction”. This rare glimpse inside the private world of Elvis is based on the intriguing and bizarre facts from first-hand accounts of those who were there, as told to the creator of this series.

An excerpt from the video says it best:
"This story involves Elvis' live-in girlfriend, two jealous sisters, a real bonefied "Cat-fight" and Elvis going completely off the hook, wild-man ballistic, in a frenzied fit of rage so extreme- that it took three grown men to restrain him. The ensuing collateral damage was so substantial that it can be clearly evidenced in one of Elvis' films that he was shooting at the time ...if you know where to look."
Fasten your seatbelts, because it's about to get real!

The story is almost unbelievable enough to begin with (as Elvis says), but there are also more than one occasion when the plot further thickens in mid-stream, as this real-life saga unfolds before your eyes. This is definitely unlike any production on Elvis that you have ever seen before.
More episodes are currently in production and pre-production stages… “this is just the beginning” of this TOTALLY FREE video series that is available for fans to enjoy. Bud only asks that you share it with all of your Elvis friends so they can also share in the fun.

There is only one way to be personally notified as each new episode is released; and that is to subscribe on the official ELVIS: BEHIND THE IMAGE YouTube channel and click the notification bell.
SURPRISE! - WHATEVER YOU DO…. Be sure to watch the video ALL THE WAY TO THE VERY END for a surprise that every real Elvis fan will not want to miss out on!

'From Elvis In Nashville' New 4CD Set: EIN was hoping that the official announcement would have been out by now - but this is what we have so far.
"From Elvis In Nashville" is the new SONY major release, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Elvis' "Nashville Marathon" sessions that took place in June 1970.
At these session Elvis would record classic material including I’ve Lost You, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, Patch It Up, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Stranger In The Crowd, Mary In The Morning, and Just Pretend. In September Elvis would return to Nashville to record more hits Rags To Riches and Where Did They Go Lord.
The sessions would go on to create two of Elvis' best ever albums 'Elvis Country' and 'That's The Way It Is'.
From Elvis In Nashville promises "Undubbed versions of all tracks" - perhaps all the Undubbed Masters, plenty of which have still never been officially released.
At the time all the Nashville tracks were heavily overdubbed and nowadays the raw studio versions often sound more contemporary. Hopefully, like 'Down In the Jungle Room', this 2020 release 'From Elvis In Nashville' will provide a fascinating and honest look at Elvis' creative side.
This set was originally slated for an August release (to fit in with the 2020 Elvis Week celebrations) but rumours are
that it may be delayed until later in 2020, possibly November.
More info when we get it. - Released back in 2002, FTD's The Nashville Marathon was one of their best

Friday 26 June 2020 - - - - VIVA ELVIS - - - - VIVA ELVIS - - - -

June 26, 1977, Elvis Presley’s Final Concert: June 26th 2020 marks the 43rd anniversary of the last ever concert of the King of Rock n’ Roll in 1977. Obviously unplanned, the journey of this legendary artist ends on a whim, with his manager still lining up yet more tours for his worn-out artist.

Collapsing at home after a few weeks rest, Elvis died of heart failure from a cardiovascular disease the day before his scheduled next concert in Portland, Maine. With his tragic death announced on August 16th, 1977 people all around the world, including mass media and communication groups, wept as they reminisced of Elvis Presley’s memories outside Baptist Memorial hospital and Graceland Mansion that night.

In Europe, two radio stations

immediately ceased their regular on-air programs the instance Presley’s death was announced. Radio Luxembourg, with the largest audience in Europe, cancelled their commercials just to play his music non-stop. His Graceland mansion was then for the first time opened to the public for the viewing of his body lying-in-state and an estimate of 50,000 to 100,000 people appear to pay their respects to him.

Although life held such a tragic, ill-fated end to his all-too-short career, Elvis' final concert in Indianapolis, Indiana performed to 18 thousand of

his loving fans was one of his best in months.
After the support acts had warmed up the crowd Elvis exploded on stage to Also Sprach Zarathustra, followed by a punchy See See Rider. While obviously not up to the energy of his earlier 70's performances the set-list featured some nice treats for his ever-loving fans such as Fairytale, It’s Now or Never and Little Sister. A rare Please Release Me was performed plus favourites like I Can’t Stop Loving You and an emotional Bridge Over Troubled Water - sung for the first time in over a month.
During the band introductions Elvis added Early Morning Rain and I Really Don’t Want to Know, before the high power of his more recent single Hurt.
Afterwards Elvis' four minute monologue is emotional as he introduces his father, girlfriend Ginger and all the staff who have
helped him on this (final) tour. Truly heart-breaking is hearing Elvis saying, "If you want to hear us again, we'll be back". Sadly that would never happen.
Closing with the poignant, Can’t Help Falling In Love', leaving the stage he adds, “Until we meet again, God Bless, Adios.”
As Elvis sings in the last song he will ever perform, "Like a river flows, surely to the sea, Darling, so it goes, Some things are meant to be", there is no doubt that Elvis died way too young yet we are all blessed that he left behind such a stunning contribution to the entertainment industry as well as his positive influence on pop culture.
Countless artists and companies continue to revive his legacy by updating his legend and remixing his music, but in the end everything goes back to the originality and power of ELVIS. Elvis Presley may have left the building, but his legacy will never fade away as long as there are new people who
appreciate his art.
The Market Square Arena in Indianapolis was demolished in 2001 but a Memorial to Elvis commemorates that there was once a great artist who performed his finale-on-earth in that very sacred place.

Elvis Macrame Belt Sells for $298,000!: At the recent Julien's 'Music Icons 2020 Auction' Elvis memorabilia sold very well with the biggest surprise being Elvis' ivory macrame belt with accented reflective stones selling for $298,000 - after 32 bids - and for nearly 10 times its expected price.

Other notable Elvis items that sold were
- A pair of black western trousers with beige fringe on the sides, worn by Elvis in his role as Johnny in Frankie and Johnny (UA, 1966). (Shown below) Estimate US$6000 - Winning Bid $11,875

- The OWL metal decoration buckle. The back of the buckle has handwritten “Elvis LR” from one of Presley’s famous suits worn on stage -  Winning Bid $5,120
- A 1966 Chevrolet Impala which Elvis later decided to gift it to Gary Pepper, president of Presley’s fan club -  Winning Bid $62,500

- 14K yellow gold TCB necklace. - $7,680

A 1977 Silverado pickup truck was purchased on Christmas Eve 1976 by Presley. He eventually gave it to his father, Vernon Presley. Winning bid $41,600.

The main item featured at the auction however was Kurt Cobain's 'MTV Unplugged' guitar which sold for a sky-high $6 million. The 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played in the band's rare acoustic performance on November 18, 1993, approximately five months before his death, Cobain chose this guitar to paint what Rolling Stone called "his last self-portrait." The guitar was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones.

Also a custom guitar played by Prince at the height of his stardom in the 1980s and 1990s sold for $563,500 around three times the estimate. Prince played the blindingly blue guitar with the artist's "love" symbol on its neck on his 1984 Purple Rain tour, and it also appeared on the classic albums Lovesexy and Sign O' The Times. He used it into the early 1990s.

'Suspicious Minds' Billboard Number One (again!): It was 50 years ago this week that the most successful group in Billboard Hot 100 history, The Beatles enjoyed their Billboard chart swan-song with their June 13, 1970 No. 1 single 'The Long and Winding Road'.
Because of this Billboard has posted The Greatest Final No. 1 Singles of All-Time: the Hot 100 toppers that stand as the final statement in the chart history books from some of our most successful artists ever.
Of course, to even have a "final No. 1," you need to have a number of them to begin with, and it has to have been a while since your last one.
We settled at a minimum of four total No. 1s, and at least ten years since the most recent one, to be eligible for this list.
As chosen by Billboard Staff here's the top 20 songs that best capped pop history in Billboard Hot 100 singles.
At NUMBER ONE
1. Elvis Presley, "Suspicious Minds" (1969)

How fitting that the King of Rock ’n’ Roll’s last No. 1 is one of his very best -- you wouldn’t want The King to go out on a dud. Presley recorded this song in Memphis in January 1969, when he was coming off his legendary comeback TV special (which aired the previous month). Elvis was back on top, and it shows
in his performance. “Suspicious Minds” is notable for a very long fade, which initially turns out to be a fake ending, guessing correctly that listeners hadn't gotten enough of the outro just yet. Elvis locks into a killer groove and stays with it for a good two minutes -- a very good two minutes.
2. The Jackson 5, "I'll Be There" (1970)
The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" wasn't intended as a swan song for the group as they would record another seven albums. But as their last of their four Hot 100 toppers, this earnest adieu serves as a fitting finale for the frequently fractured family band, with a prepubescent Michael sounding like he's laying the groundwork for a solo ascent.
3. Cher, "Believe" (1999)
This was Cher’s first No. 1 hit in 25 years, and gave her the contemporary cred she needed to rise to a new level as a concert draw.
4. The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (1972)
A superlative vocal performance from each of the group's members, a defining moment for the scale, ambition and craft of early-'70s soul.
5. Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, "Empire State of Mind" (2009)
No matter how many times you experience it, the rush never gets stale. It's the last No. 1 for both artists to date – but don't count either out just yet.
6. Madonna, "Music" (2000) - One of Madonna's most successful reinventions.
7. Blondie, "Rapture" (1981) - Blondie's fourth and last No. 1 the seductive, slinky disco-rock bop "Rapture" and first Hot 100 leader to feature some rapping.
8. The Beatles, "The Long and Winding Road" (1970)- This was not only the Beatles’ final - of a still-record 20 No. 1 hits - it was the Beatles’ final single as an active recording act.
9. Janet Jackson, "All For You" (2001) - Breezily updates the jams of Janet's youth for the 21st century
10. Whitney Houston, "Exhale (Shoop, Shoop)" (1995) - The last of eleven Whitney Houston top #1 singles.
The final 10 selections... 11. The Rolling Stones, "Miss You" (1978), 12. Stevie Wonder, "Part-Time Lover" (1985), 13. Diana Ross & the Supremes, "Someday We'll Be Together" (1969), 14. The Bee Gees, "Love You Inside Out" (1979), 15. Destiny's Child, "Bootylicious" (2001), 16. Prince + NPG, "Cream" (1991),  17. Diana Ross, “Endless Love”,
18. The Four Seasons, "December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)" (1976), 19. TLC, "Unpretty" (1999), 20. Hall & Oates, "Out of Touch" (1984) - Go here for the full BB article

20 years ago this week ELVIS topped the charts: It seems only the other day but it was twenty years ago this week that Elvis Presley (born 1935 - first #1 in 1956 ) and Kylie Minogue (born 1968 - first #1 in 1987) battled each other for the UK Official Singles Chart Number 1 spot.
Kylie's hit was 'Love At First Sight', a later follow-up to the global Number 1 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'.
However in 2002, to mark 25 years since his death, the Elvis' estate went into promotional overdrive releasing the new retrospective Elv1s: 30 No.1 Hits and releasing a remix of 'A Little Less Conversation' a lesser soundtrack song that had only been a minor hit in the US upon its original 1968 release.
The new version by Junkie XL marked the first time an artist outside the Presley organisation had been allowed to remix an Elvis song. Boosting the track's popularity even further was its use in Nike's inescapable 2002 FIFA World Cup advertising campaign.
Amazingly 'A Little Less Conversation' debuted at
the UK Number 1 spot selling a staggering 243,000 copies, while Kylie's Love A First Sight took second place on 82,000 copies.
It gave Elvis his 17th UK Number 1 single, four weeks at #1, while for Kylie it ranks as one of her 11 Number 2s.
'A Little Less Conversation' went on to be UK's 2002 fifth best-selling single.

EPE/Graceland Refund Issues & CV-19 closure: Social media has been abuzz recently with displeased fans unable to obtain a refund for Graceland tickets bought before COVID-19 shut everything down.
EIN agrees that to refuse to refund money (and offer instead a pass for any time in the next 12 months) is not right, is not a good look, and is all about corporate greed, not the customer. Also, despite EPE’s statement, the policy surely has nothing to do with its attorney which would only have advised it “didn’t have to” provide refunds. The law does not preclude making refunds.
EPE could still elect to do the right thing, and in this respect, it is pleasing to read that despite the experience of some people, others are receiving refunds.
This issue is the latest in a series of controversies involving EPE, following Graceland ticket price increases and (aborted) plans to charge fans to attend the Annual Candlelight Vigil.

On the road with Elvis - near death drug incident: In 'The Death of Elvis What Really Happened' (Thompson & Cole), there is a harrowing account of the day Elvis’ cousin, Gene Smith, almost died from a drug overdose. The authors record:
Over the years, though, Billy (Smith) was exposed to some harrowing experiences that made the dangers of drug abuse impossible to forget.
In 1962, for example, he came very close to witnessing the drug death of one of his and Elvis’s cousins, Gene Smith.
That year Billy and Gene were accompanying Elvis on a long drive in a mobile home.
Gene had been taking amphetamines to stay awake for the three days it took to make the trip. Gene finished his allotted time as driver. He retired to the back of the vehicle to get some much needed sleep, but the drugs wouldn’t let him doze off.

. .
He complained to Elvis, who gave him a 100-milligram dose of Demerol, a potent downer. And it laid Gene out cold. Later, when Billy went back to check on Gene, he noticed his cousin’s shallow breathing and then detected a faint heart beat.
Memories were fresh in Billy’s mind about Gene’s brother, Junior Smith, another Elvis sidekick in the early days who had died in his bed probably from a drug overdose. Billy was the one who discovered that Junior was dead.
Billy yelled at Elvis to stop the vehicle so that they could get help for Gene. Elvis was unhappy about stopping, and groused about doing it, but he gave in.
Gene was slapped back to consciousness and for the next three hours Elvis, Billy, and Joe Esposito took turns walking him up and down the highway.
Finally he was able to shake of the effects of the Demerol.

T.G. Sheppard and Larry Gatlin talk Elvis: Recently country legends T.G. Sheppard and Larry Gatlin on Fox News discussed meeting Elvis..
T.G. Sheppard said, "I knew what I wanted to do at a very young age. I was 13 years old and I knew I wanted to be in music in my life and my father was very strict and wasn't going to allow it in his house. So age 15 I ran away from home and hitchhiked to Memphis to chase this dream."
Sheppard said he spent several months living on the streets until a chance encounter at a skating rink changed his life.
"I was skating and they were closing the rink down, I'm standing outside and a couple of Cadillacs pull up and a guy gets out from behind the wheel of the lead car, walks over to me and says, 'Where are you going?'"
I said, 'Well, I'm leaving, they're closing in the rink down.' He said, 'Oh, no, they're opening it up for me.'
The guy I was talking to was Elvis!
The greatest gift Elvis gave me was the confidence to work hard and try to succeed in the tour-bus that he gave me. I didn't want to let him down if he believed in me enough to help out. So I worked harder because of that gift."
Larry Gatlin (who composed the songs 'Help Me' and 'Bitter They Are') also crossed paths with Elvis in the early seventies. Gatlin (Above, far right with Elvis) was in law school when he received a call to audition as baritone with the gospel the Imperials.
.. "It was 1971 and I saw Elvis' Las Vegas shows dinner and cocktail shows and after the midnight show we all gathered in Elvis' suite for "breakfast" and a gospel sing.
At around 4ish that morning I found myself sitting alone, eating a biscuit and some country ham, when Elvis asked me to join him for a visit.
Elvis was very nice. We talked about our gospel music heroes: James and R. W. Blackwood, Jake Hess and Hovie Lister. I never did get to sing with him except for in the dressing room after almost every show.
The Imperials really only needed me for the Jimmy Dean Show, which opened at The Landmark the night after Elvis closed at The Hilton.
After seeing the show Elvis said, "Kid, you sing pretty durn good. Good luck."
I got my one and only picture with Elvis that night. In fact, that's the last time I ever saw him face to face.
A few nights later Jimmy told me that I was NOT going to be an Imperial. It was one of the worst and one of the best moments of my life since Dottie West was Jimmy's special guest and I began writing songs for her and because of that a few years later I won a Grammy!"

(Book Review) Elvis 1956 – September 9 First Ed Sullivan Show (Paul Belard): The latest Elvis photo-book from prolific author, Paul Belard, has been published. The “limited edition” first pressing focuses on one of the most significant events in the Elvis story, his first appearance on America’s most popular television entertainment program, The Ed Sullivan Show.

Elvis was reviewed at the time as ..  Anything more outrageously offensive to good taste, is hard to imagine – within the limits of the law. The young man seems devoid of talent, unless one recognises such a thing as a talent for vulgarity.
How then, does he happen to appear again and again on a program allegedly governed by the American family’s sovereign demand for things of good taste?

EIN’s Nigel Patterson has taken a look inside the new book and in a 1,000 word review, offers his view on the rich range of narrative, visual and archival material featured in it.

New academic book, Elvis: Roots, Image, Comeback, Phenomenon (Icons of Popular Music), now available: Last month, EIN reported that distribution of Dr. Mark Duffett’s latest Elvis book had been stymied by the COVID-19 virus restrictions. We are pleased to say that copies of the book have now been supplied to book outlets (including Amazon and the Book Depository).
The book synopsis: Elvis Presley remains the single most important figure in twentieth century popular music. To many commentators, however, he has simply embodied the benefits and problems of uncritically embracing capitalism. By 2005 the 'Memphis Flash' sold over a billion records worldwide, yet his cultural significance cannot be measured by these extraordinary sales figures alone. He cannot quite be reduced to a placeholder for the contradictions of commerce. As the most prominent performer of the rock'n'roll era, then as a charismatic global superstar, Elvis fundamentally challenged the established relationship between White and Black culture, drew attention to the social needs of women and young people, and promoted the value of Southern creativity.
.
Elvis functioned as a bridge figure between folk roots and high modernity, and in the process became a controversial symbol of American unity. Elvis interprets the image and music of Elvis Presley to reveal how they have evolved to construct a particularly appealing and powerful myth. Following broad contours of Presley's rollercoaster career, the book uses a range of analytical frames to challenge established perspectives on an icon. Its shows that the controversy around Elvis has effectively tested how far a concern for social equality could be articulated through the marketplace, and ultimately challenged how popular music itself should be assessed.

UPDATED- 'Elvis: St Louis & Spokane 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
Released as a 2-CD 5” digi-pak, this new FTD set features Elvis at the Kiel Auditorium on March 22 1976 and The Coliseum on April 27 1976.
Both shows were "Closing Nights" of these short 1976 tours where Elvis would often go that little bit further for his loving fans.
Larrie Londin played drums with the TCB band on the March 1976 tour so it will be a treat for collectors to get an official release featuring 'A Different Beat' with Larrie Londin playing at St Louis on March 22, 1976.

Can there really be that much to say about these two concerts, well EIN's coolest reviewers have rustled up over 4000 words.. and check if there any surprises in store..

(Concert Review) A Rock ‘n’ Roll Story – Elvis in Asheville in 1975: We found this review hiding away in the EIN archives...
Around 10 p.m., the lights in the Asheville Civic Center arena darkened, and the somber strains of Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” – the theme from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 – filled the air. The music was appropriately momentous, because the long-waited date of July 22, 1975, had arrived. A bona fide superstar was about to rock the then-new arena for three nights in a row.
Asheville resident Nancy Fox was there, after she and a girlfriend, along with 7,500 other people, had shelled out a mere $10 for their tickets. “We were in the orchestra section; we had good seats,” she recalls. “My heart was jumping out of my skin.” As the dramatic pounding of the timpani drove 2001 to its climax, into the limelight stepped the one, the only, Elvis Aaron Presley.
“When he came out, he was bigger than life in that white jumpsuit,” Fox remembers. An eruption of screams filled the arena as the music segued into a rousing version of another late-Elvis standard, “See, See, Rider.”
That show and the next two – all of which had sold out in a matter of hours back in March – marked the end of one of Elvis’ ’70s-era whirlwind tours. It was a short but intense venture away from the comforts of Graceland, a two-week Oklahoma City-to-WNC blitz brimming with music and mayhem.
And for all the excitement at the Civic Center – where scalper tickets were going for as much as $50 – an equally compelling display of Elvis’ dramatic flair was playing out behind the scenes. “A writer who had the time could dig up a thousand stories about Elvis’ visit here,” noted Asheville Citizen writer Bob Terrell in a July 25 column. Unearthing those stories, which exemplified the excess, eccentricity and sheer heart that came to characterize the performer’s final years, makes it clear that Elvis rocked Asheville in more ways than one.
When he played the Asheville shows – 30 years ago last week – Elvis was an increasingly hefty 40-year-old, a far cry from the boy-faced, slick-and-slim wonder who hypnotized a generation of teenagers with the forbidden fruit of rock ‘n’ roll. He’d been to Asheville before, but under much different circumstances: In 1955, right before he became famous, he’d opened here for country music faves Hank Snow and Martha Carson. Twenty years later, when Elvis finally returned, the once indisputable “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” found his fame – and frame – changing shape. As Nancy Fox remembers it, in Asheville there were signs of the star’s now-infamous physical decline, but he was still a full-fledged star. “He was in that progression to where he ended up being, but he had not gotten to that point. He was just bigger – but he was still Elvis Presley, in all of his glory. He was just a bigger version of Elvis.”
The next day, the Asheville Citizen recorded that Elvis was “paunchy but pretty,” and that he sang in a voice “as vigorous and convincing as ever.” During the almost two-hour performance, the singer, his 15-piece band, 11-member orchestra and slew of backup singers gave the Asheville audience a big show, pausing for only one, unexpected seven- minute intermission.

Yoshi is concluding his decades long amazing story as he takes us both back, and front stage, for his participation in the auditions for the very popular America’s Got Talent (AGT) TV show, and subsequently the Gong Show.

UPDATED - ‘Elvis Reborn: New Mono to Stereo’ CD In-Depth Review: The publicity notes, "Hear 30 classic Elvis songs like you've never heard them before... in STEREO! These are NOT "overdubs". All of the sounds you hear are the original musicians backing Elvis, but with a clarity that exposes for the first time sounds you never heard before!"
The MONO vs STEREO debate is a fascinating discussion, so we need to get some facts straight before we investigated the possibilities of this new Elvis "Stereo" release.
The earliest recordings of the sound era were recorded in MONO with the singer and orchestra carefully positioned around one microphone. But even in Sun Studios it was actually Sam Phillips who created Elvis' classic mono recordings.
Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys were not playing "mono" - nor were they recorded via one microphone. So listening in "Fake Stereo" can fans really learn anything new about how some of these life-changing songs that Elvis recorded in the studio were created?
Is it truly possible that these "DES Stereo" versions actually sound better than their original classic mono vinyl releases?
- NOW UPDATED with YOUR Comments
EIN's Piers Beagley takes a detailed look into this new compilation and the "MONO vs STEREO" debate.

Loanne, Col Parker's widow, Has Died: Elvis Matters website confirm that Loanne Parker, widow of Colonel Parker, died Sunday May 10, in Las Vegas.

"Loanne was the beloved widow of the manager of Elvis Presley. Colonel Parker met her at the International Hotel in 1969 when they announced Elvis' first concerts at the hotel's showroom.
She has often defended the regular negative comments made against Col Parker including the fact that his manager stopped Elvis travelling overseas.
Loanne has always been a great support in the life of the Colonel. She was a friend of the house of ElvisMatters who just a few months ago were with her laughing, talking and she was beaming....
She will be missed very much. RIP Loanne."

Little Richard Dead aged 87: Little Richard, one of the pioneers of the first wave of rock’n’roll, sadly died yesterday May 9th 2020. He was 87.
'Little Richard' real name Richard Penniman, had been in poor health for several years, suffering hip problems, a stroke and a heart attack.
Richard was a crucial founding father of rock & roll whose fervent shrieks, flamboyant garb, and joyful, gender-bending persona embodied the spirit and sound of that new art form.
Richard’s son, Danny Penniman confirmed the pioneer’s death.
Richard’s performing career began when he was in mid-teens, in the late 40s, but his early recordings with the RCA Victor label garnered little success.
The breakthrough came when he signed to Specialty Records in 1955, releasing a run of singles that were among the wildest and most flamboyant of the rock’n’roll era – Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up, The Girl Can’t Help It, Lucille, Keep A-Knockin’ and Good Golly Miss Molly, among others – and that made him a star on both sides of the Atlantic.
He was known for his outrageous performance style, eyes lined with mascara, brightly coloured clothes, which was echoed later by Prince. He had been a drag performer before the rock’n’roll boom and by his own admission was involved in voyeurism and had been arrested at times.
Little Richard’s breakthrough single 'Tutti Frutti' was originally a song about sex, “If it don’t fit, don’t force it” he sang until the producer Bumps Blackwell suggested it be cleaned up. The song gave rock’n’roll its greatest nonsensical expression of joy, whose exact syllables are still debated: “Awopbopaloobopalopbamboom!
Elvis recorded Richard's songs, 'Tutti Frutti', 'Rip It Up', 'Long Tall Sally' and 'Ready Teddy' putting Little Richard's compositions into millions of white teenager's homes.
When Elvis first performed on national TV in early 1956 he chose to perform Little Richard's 'Tutti Frutti' a week before he finally decided to sing his own new single 'Heartbreak Hotel'.
Little Richard said of Elvis, "He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music."
However in his Australian October 1957 tour, Little Richard saw a fireball crossing the sky (actually Sputnik 1 satellite) and took it as a sign from God that he needed to change his ways, and in 1958 he became a preacher, only to return to secular music in 1962. The conflict between God and the devil’s music was a theme for much of the rest of his life.
The Specialty singles exerted a profound influence on a later generation of musicians such as Paul McCartney and the Beatles who also performed Richard’s songs in concert.
McCartney noted, “I could do Little Richard’s voice, which is a wild, hoarse, screaming thing. It’s like an out-of-body experience. You have to actually go outside yourself.”
Unsurprisingly both David Bowie and Elton John who both copied Richard's flamboyant ways also acknowledged the impact of Little Richard..
"When I heard Little Richard, I mean, it just set my world on fire". - David Bowie
"I heard Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, and that was it. I didn't ever want to be anything else." - Elton John
Other stars confirmed,
"Nobody could beat Little Richard's stage act. Little Richard is the originator and my first idol". - Mick Jagger
"The most exciting moment of my life was appearing on the same stage as Little Richard". - Keith Richards
Rather sadly, back in March 2020, the 'Last Man Standing' Jerry Lee Lewis revealed that "I talk with Richard occasionally. We talk about old times, and good times, and what's going on in our health. He's a good friend of mine."
In a statement today Lewis noted, “It is with a heavy heart that I ask for prayers for the family of my lifelong friend and fellow rocker Little Richard. He will live on always in my heart with his amazing talent and his friendship! He was one of a kind and I will miss him dearly.”

Dick Grob Has Died: Memphis Mafia member and former Elvis bodyguard Dick Grob has died at his home in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Melissa Grob recently posted the sad news...
"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Richard “Dick” Grob on April 22, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He passed peacefully at home, knowing he was immensely loved and surrounded by family.
Given current events, a small ceremony restricted to immediate family will be held. At a later date, we will announce a larger ceremony of life to celebrate his remarkable journey here on earth with the family and friends he loved so dearly. Thank you for your prayers and support.
At this time, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we work through this difficult time together as a family."
- Melissa.
... Dick Grob first met Elvis on May 1, 1967 the day of Elvis and Priscilla's wedding. "I met Elvis in Palm Springs California. He was just married in Las Vegas to Priscilla and they came to Palm Springs for their honeymoon. I was a policeman off duty at the time working special events. I was assigned to watch the house that Elvis was leasing and keep the crowds away. Elvis came out of the house, walked over to the police car where I was sitting, he introduced himself and asked if he could sit in the car. We listened to the police radio for about an hour and a half before he went back inside. As he left he told me if I wanted any more lemonade I should come into the house to get some... From the first time I met Elvis we were friends. Whenever he came to Palm Springs, which was often, he would always call me and I would go up to the house. I would talk with him as two friends would along with everyone else that was there...

- - R.I.P. Richard “Dick” Grob - -

Interview with Dick Grob, Elvis' Head Of Security: Some fans have very strong opinions about some Elvis associates such as Priscilla, Charlie Hodge and indeed Dick Grob. One can ask the question whether it is fair to judge these people like we sometimes do, since in reality we were not there – and yet they were.
Elvis’ life was pretty extraordinary, with many highs and lows, and one wonders how any of us would have coped with the stress, especially if you were responsible for the man’s safety.
In our special interview Dick Grob talks about Elvis as a friend and as a human being, life on the road, Aloha, Elvis’ fondness for the police, Ginger Alden, Elvis’ plans in ’77 for shows in Europe, Elvis’ decline and his death. Grob also discusses, Elvis’ reaction to a fan who said he should smoke marijuana to improve his music and his final conversation with Elvis in the very early morning of August 16, 1977.

'Elvis: Live in California' May 1974 FTD Review: The most recent live soundboard 5” double-digipack FTD release which this time focused on Elvis' short Tour of California which went from May 10 to May 13 1974. CD1 features a combination of May 10 San Bernardino Opening Show / Fresno May 12 show while the second CD features May 13 San Bernardino Closing Show.
Best of all, these shows are previously unreleased soundboards.
In 1974 Elvis added the new songs 'Help Me', 'Let Me Be There' and ‘Why Me Lord’ to his set-list plus the old SUN classic ‘Trying To Get To You’ while on this tour Elvis added 'Big Boss Man' which he would then keep performing through to 1977. With 'Polk Salad', 'Steamroller Blues', 'Suspicious Minds', 'I Can't Stop Loving You' and 'An American Trilogy' also in the mix, the set-list was a truly solid selection.
With a mix of fifties oldies, classics hits, new material and some nice surprises fans would have truly enjoyed these shows.

'Elvis Day By Day 2019' Book Review: 2019 was a year of many celebrations. It marked the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley's triumphant return to live performing and the release of two of his most iconic recordings, "Suspicious Minds" and “In The Ghetto”.
Sadly 2019 also marked the 42nd anniversary of his untimely death - yet his cultural impact may very well have been more visible and ‘alive’ during the last 42 years than when he was actually alive. And so is the Elvis-world today.
Kees Mouwen's "Elvis Day By Day 2019 - The year in Review" compiles a comprehensive and illustrated chronology of ‘everything Elvis from 2019’ in one physical reference book and with over 500 illustrations.
Joan Gansky first met Elvis on August 18, 1967 and was there at the '68 Special' as well as Elvis' 1969 Las Vegas live return.
She writes, "We are both honored and proud that this book features my husband Paul's photographs and my fond memories of August '69 at the International Las Vegas! When I wrote them back at that time, I never dreamed 50 years later they would be printed in any book, especially one of this high caliber. This ongoing deep interest is due to Elvis Presley and the enduring love for and appreciation of him by his fans worldwide."

'ELVIS In The 2010s' A Personal Review of the Past Decade: Rather like Elvis’s own career, each decade since Elvis’s death appears to have had a theme or identity of its own. Clearly the late 1970s were difficult for RCA as they struggled to find the right direction with which to take their posthumous releases, and so it was the 1980s that was the decade when the company slowly but surely learned how to look back at Elvis's legacy and start to make some sense of it.
The 1990s were when that reached a peak, with the decades boxed sets, and the Elvis in the 90s series, thus bringing virtually the whole catalogue back into print in a coherent way.
The 2000s were when errors of judgement at retail level started to occur (despite huge successes like Elv1s), but also when FTD came into its own and flourished.
And so what will we make of Elvis releases of the 2010s when we look back on them from the future?
Go here for EIN contributor Shane Brown's personal take on the highs and lows of Elvis product that has come our way over the last decade....

MRS 'Elvis:Back In Living Stereo' in-depth Review: The new MRS set contains 6CDs of essential 1960-1962 master recordings, plus rare alternate outtakes - including plenty of officially unreleased material - and all of the personal home recordings Elvis made during the 1960s.
The 100 page book, with text from Gordon Minto, includes rare unpublished documents and photographs, supported by a comprehensive text discussing each of Elvis’ RCA studio (non-film) recording sessions held during 1960-62.
Musically the packed cds - over seven hours - present a stunning look at Elvis recording in the early sixties before the shine wore off. The "Master" sessions nicely contrast with the looser "Outtakes" discs and with Elvis getting even more uninhibited on the Home Recordings. - Very unihibited with a certain Nancy Sharpe!

But with so much thrown into the mix, and some tracks in poor audio quality, have MRS packed "Too Much" into the one release.Go here as EIN's Nigel Patterson & Piers Beagley check out the positives and negatives in their in-depth review.

ELVIS Forever - 2019: - August 16th, 1956, Elvis arrived on board an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles International airport in order to start work on his first film role, The Reno Brothers soon to be renamed 'Love Me Tender'.
Elvis was only 21 years old and at the start of his incredible trajectory to become the world's biggest superstar.
Little did Elvis know that he was already halfway through his all too-short life on earth.
In the same month Elvis would tell fans, "I've been lucky. You know something? I just feel sometimes like it's all a dream, like I'll rub my eyes and wake up and it will be over. I hope not. I hope it never happens. I hope it never ends"
Sadly, just 21 years later, it would end far too soon.
Forty two years on we all are once again thinking about tragic end to Elvis' incredible life and how much he did for us in his all too short life-time.

In 2019 EIN's Piers Beagley looks back at why the legacy of ELVIS is still so important to us - along with memories of Elvis from Jerry Schilling, Linda Thompson, Alan Fortas, George Klein, Joe Esposito, Marty Lacker, Lamar Fike and Larry Geller

The 28-page booklet includes rare photographs, memorabilia, session data, Movie Trivia and an updated overview of the movie by Alan Hanson - with all tracks recently remixed and remastered.

'The Best Of The '68 Comeback Special' CD Review: The original NBC TV Special featured Elvis playing with so much passion that it inspired a career renaissance
Released to cash-in on the recent “Elvis All-Star Tribute” one can only hope that the mass of Post Malone and Ed Sheeran fans will consider Elvis’ amazing musical legacy worth checking out.
Elvis never looked cooler than in the 68 Special and this surely has got to help.
The original ELVIS NBC soundtrack vinyl album was obviously the very first selected ‘Best Of’ while BMG’s marvellous 1998 “Memories” double-album was an expanded version. This new ‘Best Of’ has presumably been selected by Rob Santos and John Jackson.
Elvis was SO DAMN GOOD performing for the NBC TV special that any alternate edit has to be enjoyable so EIN thought it worth giving the new set a spin. With all of Elvis’ USA sales getting a positive bump after the new TV show we know that this new set is being played in a fair few homes.
EIN's Piers Beagley investigates, can another '68 ComeBack Special compilation really be worth buying all over again?
and Have Your Say! Does this really help Elvis' great legacy...

'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for? In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..

The VINYL Boom: Over 7.6 million vinyl LPs were sold in the USA during the first half of 2018, a 20% increase from the previous year, while in Australia vinyl sales increased by $3 million, the same increase of 20%. In the same period CD sales however dropped by 15%.
Elvis vinyl is still selling very nicely with ‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ recently in the UK Top ten VINYL charts.
And there is plenty of Elvis Presley vinyl on offer....

‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ on GOLD Vinyl: ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits was re-released by Sony Music on GOLD Vinyl on 12 October. UK's Entertainment-Focus have posted this cute review.
... What is there to say about Elvis Presley that hasn’t already been said?
It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. 16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl.
Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special.
Presley was an incredibly prolific artist so getting this collection down to 31 tracks was no easy feat. It also includes the ALLC Junkie XL remix.
What was achieved with ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits though, is a

collection that gives you all the highlights you need from The King’s career to showcase the incredible impact he had on music. The album opens with Heartbreak Hotel and there isn’t a single filler track here.
It’s actually near impossible to pick out highlights across the 2LPs because every single one of these songs is a classic.
Of course no Elvis collection would be complete without Suspicious Minds and that track is near the end of the track listing on the final side.
The release features the artwork from the original 2002 release and it’s a beautiful, high-quality gatefold. I mentioned earlier about the gold vinyl but what I’ve not commented on yet is the sound. The CD version was a little patchy given that the songs were all recorded at different times. It’s not as noticeable on the vinyl release and the quality is crystal clear. The warm crackle of vinyl adds to the overall feel too.
ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan. While he had plenty of great songs that aren’t featured here, this collection truly is the definitive one to own. There’s not a single bad song here and it’s lengthy enough to give you value for money. The whole vinyl package is fantastic and it looks as good as it sounds.
They don’t make artists like Elvis anymore and they probably never will again.

‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ GOLD Vinyl Double LP.

'ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits' is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan.

The Official 'A Boy From Tupelo' Vinyl album is still selling, while there are some interesting Public Domain Vinyl releases out in the UK including 'Jailhouse Rock' with 16 tracks even including 'Lonesome Cowboy'! Also the rather odd CD called 'Girls! Girls! Girls! + Loving You' with thirty tracks including Bonus tracks such as 'Is It So Strange' and even 'Good Luck Charm' out 29 October 2018 from Hoo Doo Records!

'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' DVD Review: For fans of Elvis’ music there is no doubt that the HBO documentary “Elvis Presley The Searcher” was one of the best programmes ever made about Elvis and where his inspiration and music came from. Fans were therefore pleased to know that the documentary would be released on DVD. The vision quality is excellent and it is a joy to slow-mo through some of the newly found clips and historical footage of Elvis. However, how can such a fine documentary feel like such a let down as fans discover there are no DVD extras included that look deeper into Elvis' search?
EIN's Piers Beagley looks at the recent Australian DVD releases to find a good value-for-money documentary is also one of the biggest Elvis marketing failures in years and a disgrace. Go here for the full review, a look at the "Questions & Answers" bonus material plus the special 20-page booklet. Is it really what Elvis fans wanted in this special DVD release?

UPDATED - ‘Where No One Stands Alone’ In-Depth Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. After commercial failure of the last Elvis / RPO album that concept has been dropped in favour of an Andy Childs led “Re-Vamp” of some Elvis Gospel.
Recorded over fifty years ago there is no doubt that some of Elvis’ Gospel songs might benefit from some sensitive modern production. And, after all, there is an interesting selection of tracks to work with. Not only that, but Lisa Marie was also involved in the recording.
So can a new ‘Re-Vamp’ of Elvis Gospel really work and can we recommend it to Elvis collectors?
Click here as EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka are back again to cause "Double-trouble" and supply a very detailed review, discovering what's good and bad...
And HAVE YOUR SAY - what do you think of the new album? Are we wrong in our opinions?

(Book Review) The Elvis Experience (Dave Hebler): As a member of Elvis' Memphis Mafia, Dave Hebler was part of Elvis' inner sanctum at least until his acromonious sacking, along with Red West and Sonny West, in 1976, and the subsequent publication of the infamous book, Elvis What Happened?. Over the years, Dave, Red and Sonny West reclaimed respect in the Elvis world, at least with many fans, if not the Presley family and EPE. Dave Hebler's new book was released during Elvis Week 2018. The Elvis Experience has a 'fan friendly' feel to it. There are many amusing and fun stories and the author does not shy away from discussing at least some of the not so positive aspects of his experience working for Elvis. To find out more about "The Elvis Experience" you can read Nigel Patterson's in-depth review here.

FTD will NOT end in 2019:  A fair number of uninformed supposed Elvis "insiders" (even some Fan Club Presidents) have been publishing fictional stories that the FTD label is planning to close in 2019.
Ernst Jorgensen had strongly denied this story stating, that FTD has plans to continue for the foreseeable future.
In an interesting interview about 'The Future of FTD' - with Trevor Cajiao in the recent ETM&HM magazine - Ernst Jorgensen's main points were....
1. FTD will not be closing in 2019
2. The 'Classic Albums" series is nearly complete but there are more to come, noting 'Aloha' and 'Madison Square Garden' are still to be done.
3. Expanded "complete session tapes" releases are being considered
4. Plenty more soundboards to come
To read the complete story including answers about FTD deletions and other future ideas please read the December issue of ETM&HM.

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

Go here as EIN contributor & author Shane Brown investigates and checks the facts and the fantasy.

Elvis fans always discover something quite magical when they get the chance to “Walk-a-mile-in-his-shoes”. Graceland, when not overrun by crowds, feels very special indeed. Standing in the quiet you can almost feel the spirit of Elvis still inhabiting his home. The feeling in Memphis’ Sun Studios can bring fans to tears.
One of the places that Elvis spent a large part of his life is the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel – now the Westgate. Elvis performed a stunning 636 concerts in the Hilton showroom and the impact of his incredible legacy can still be felt. - NOW with more great Hilton photos - plus EIN Readers Feedback. Arjan Deelen recently returned to the classic hotel to investigate “Elvis Hotspots” and discovered that behind the showroom stage it is relatively unchanged. Book Review "Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide": Elvis Presley made over 700 recordings during his life. This book by author Shane Brown examines all of them. Session by session, song by song, Reconsider Baby takes the reader on a journey from Elvis’s first recordings in 1953 through to his last performances in 1977.
This significantly expanded and revised edition of 2014’s Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide provides a commentary on Elvis’s vast and varied body of work, while also examining in detail how Elvis and his recordings and performances were discussed in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications from the 1950s through to the 1970s.
The text draws on over 500 contemporary articles and reviews, telling for the first time the story of how Elvis and his career played out in the printed media, and often forcing us to question our understanding of how Elvis’s work was received at the time of release.

Can another detailed examination into Elvis' musical legacy really be worth buying? (Hint, the answer is a big YES!)

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

EIN's Sanja Meegin recently caught up with Mindi Miller to talk about her close friendship with Elvis over the years.
In this fascinating interview she discusses. . .
- Her first night with Elvis
- How Elvis persuaded her to cancel her overseas movie & modelling plans
- Their mutual interest in Karate
- Graceland and meeting Lisa Marie
- Attending Elvis' funeral

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.
As a prelude to Ken Sharp's fascinating interview with Marty Lacker and a discussion about Elvis' famous American Studio' Memphis sessions, EIN presents "Marty Lacker: a life well-lived" in which Marty tells of his life in the music industry, his friendship with Elvis along with his dislike of the over-controlling Col Parker.
Go here to learn all you need to know about Marty Lacker as well as Elvis outstanding Memphis American Sound sessions in 1969.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review:  Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .
