'Summer Festival 1970: The Rehearsals' New MRS set Preview Copy: MRS have announced a 3CD Deluxe set titled ‘SUMMER FESTIVAL 1970 – THE REHEARSALS’ to be released on 12th March 2021, but PREVIEW copies have already sneaked out!
The CDs contain rehearsal highlights from one of the most memorable periods in Elvis’ career - his captivating performances at The International Hotel Las Vegas in the summer of 1970. These truly historical recordings, remastered and restored capture the raw and early development of songs that were performed weeks later in Las Vegas. The accompanying 40-page booklet includes rare photographs taken at some of these rehearsal sessions.
As usual MRS has spared no expense in our remastering techniques. For the first time ever all, the tracks listed have had repairs and restorations having now the same mastering techniques, used on such recent MRS releases such as ‘Made in Germany’ and ‘Such a Night in Pearl Harbor’. A sample sound of this will circulate on forums within days of this announcement.
The 180g 3LP Gatefold version will be announced soon.

'Do the Vega' (Dillon Francis Remix): Back in January we posted news of Peloton being "the only place anyone can hear a trio of classic Elvis Presley songs remixed by DJ Dillon Francis, Big Boi and Chromeo"
The songs, Do The Vega, Catchin’ On Fast, and Clean Up Your Own Backyard, will be part of Peloton’s Artist Series of themed workouts, the remixes are owned by Sony.
Well Elvis fans, wait no longer because the 'Do the Vega' (Dillon Francis Remix) totally sucks!
The 'ALLC' Junkie XL remix was fabulous and dance-floor worthy, but this sounds like it is made by a "JiveBunny" $5 app.

Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley: Referring to our news item last week, there is no doubt that Bruce Springsteen's key influence was ELVIS.
EIN contributor Dennis Laverty has closely examined the relationship between the two megastars in his documentary 'If I Can Dream: The Influence of Elvis on Bruce.'
Laverty cleverly uses concert footage and previously released interview segments with Springsteen and various rock experts to show just how important Presley was to Springsteen.
It all started with Presley’s first appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1956 “The revolution has been televised!! Elvis was the hip-shaking human earthquake”. It didn’t matter that CBS cameramen tried to keep Elvis respectable by shooting his performance from the waist up. For Springsteen, Elvis represented a cultural change and moment for the USA at that time. |

Springsteen says, “He was a showman, an entertainer, an imaginer of worlds, an unbelievable success, and embarrassing failure and a fount of modern actions and ideas. Ideas that would soon change the shape and future of the nation. Ideas whose time had come. - Everything starts and ends with Elvis.”
Springsteen has written a song for Elvis (“Fire”) and a song about him (“Johnny Bye-Bye”). He has covered many Elvis songs in concert, and even invited an Elvis impersonator onstage with him in Philadelphia (dubbing him “The Philly Elvis”).
Dennis Laverty’s 75-minute film covers also all of this and includes lots of rarely seen, electrifying concert performances.
It also explores the famous 1975 jumping-the-wall incident at Graceland, the Presley concerts that Springsteen saw in person, and interesting tangents such as Patti Scialfa’s song “Looking for Elvis” and the reverence that Springsteen associates Jon Landau and author Dave Marsh have for Presley.

'Elvis At The Movies' Vintage Rock: The UK magazine Vintage Rock has a new Presley special coming out, ''Elvis At The Movies'.
... We all know of Elvis Presley as the best-selling solo music artist of all time, but less talked about is his status as one of the biggest movie stars of the 50s and 60s. Well, we’re putting that right. 'Return To The Queen City of The South' New Import CD Set:
It is not widely known that in 1977, Felton Jarvis planned a release of the great version of "America The Beautiful" and some other tracks from Charlotte 1976 show on a country flavored studio / live compilation album "Welcome To My World." Three concerts from Charlotte here - including Jarvis' original old stereo mix and restored it for our release!
For the February 20th, 1977 a different source than FTD has been used. February 21st, 1977 was newly mastered from same tape source as the1995 Fort Baxter CD release "Moody Blue and Other Great Performances."
As a bonus, you will find a selection of pre-show tracks performed by J. D. Sumner and The Stamps and The Sweet Inspirations in 1976 / 77. Plus bonus tracks taped in February - June 1977, as well, unique mixes of songs like "Steamroller Blues" from Austin, March 28 or "Unchained Melody" from Rapid City, June 21, 1977.
EIN Note: As mentioned FTD released Charlotte Feb 20th and other highlights on their CD 'Unchained Melody' - As we noted at the time, "In 1977 Elvis was running on low, his concerts were often perfunctory at best, early 1977 saw Elvis going downhill fast and putting on the weight that he had recently lost."

ELVIS on Mars: Elvis loved the excitement of outta-space and rocket-flights to the moon. With the Perseverance rocket and Rover Lander arriving and landing on planet Mars, there is life - and ELVIS - on Mars!
Elvis Presley was the most significant name (he had his own boarding pass) to get onto the rocket Perseverance (great name for Elvis' flight) that launched in July 2020 - and "The Prince From Another Planet" is finally there!

Last year NASA asked people to add their names to the computer chip that would be sent on the Perseverance Rocket. The chip was put on the Rover Lander that touched-down on planet Mars February 18, 2021.
Elvis would have wanted to go. He followed NASA flights from the early 60's and so fans added his name.
Above is the picture of Elvis 'official' NASA boarding pass. And Elvis' name is on the chip for others to find 10's of millions of years from now.
During the filming of MGM's 'On Tour' Elvis asks about the Apollo 16 launch on April 16, 1972, "is the NASA rocket launched?"
Space flights were indeed one of his interests.

The Making of Pickwick's 'Frankie & Johnny': Elvis author and EIN contributor Thomas Melin has posted a neat 'Insiders' article about the "The Making of Frankie & Johnny".
The 1976 Pickwick reissue of 'Frankie & Johnny' was one of the strangest budget compilations ever released.
Fans may have wondered how this ludicrous idea came about, and Thomas Melin may just have the answer.
As the Pickwick marketing executive (stupidly) noted, “Even if we can’t make it sound contemporary, we can always give it a more modern look. Put an Elvis LIVE shot on the front and it might sell like hotcakes."

Graceland plans in-person events during Elvis Week: Publicity is ramping up with media reporting that 'Elvis Presley's Graceland is preparing to host visitors and offer in-person activities during the annual Elvis Week this summer in Memphis, Tennessee.'
On the 44th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, fans will get to celebrate the musician once again at the annual Elvis Week event in Memphis, Tennessee.
Presley's Graceland is preparing to host visitors and offer in-person events for Elvis Week from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17. Organizers said public health protocols will be in place, including the requirement of masks, temperature screenings and socially distanced seating.
The event will feature appearances by celebrities and musicians, live concerts, panel discussions, parties, bus excursions and the Elvis tribute artist contest. The keystone event, once again, will be a candlelight vigil as fans visit his grave.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Elvis Week events were mostly held online last year.

(Book Review) The Jewish World of Elvis Presley (Roselle Kline Chartock): The latest Elvis related book by an academic draws attention to an issue many fans will have been unaware of – the strong affinity Elvis had with Jews and how it influenced his life. Jews were disproportionately represented in Elvis’ life and inner circle – for instance, five of the Memphis Mafia were Jews. Was it just coincidence that there were so many Jews in Elvis’ life or was there something more at work?
Roselle Kline Chartock (Professor Emerita of Education) has written an absorbing and accessible account of the importance of Jews in Elvis’ life from his Jewish roots to the many personal friendships and professional relationships he enjoyed with them.
In so doing, the author reveals that what has previously been seen as a series of anecdotes, is actually a coherent and important theme in the Elvis story.

“The Boss” recalls the night he heard Elvis had died: Bruce Springsteen is a big Elvis fan and references The King at most of his concerts. Springsteen was so inspired by Elvis that he embarked on his own rock star journey, racking up more than 30 million album sales during his career and reaching 15x platinum for his seventh album, Born in the USA. But when he found out about the star’s tragic death which occurred on August 16, 1977 Springsteen was devastated. The singer gave a rousing speech at one of his gigs in 1985 about Elvis and the impact the singer made on his life.
He told his audience: “I remember later, when a friend of mine called to tell me that Elvis had died, it was so hard to understand how somebody whose music came in and took away so many people's |

loneliness and gave so many people a reason and a sense of the possibilities of living could have, in the end, died so tragically. And I guess when you're alone, you ain't nothin' but alone.”
The star previously pointed at Elvis’ 1956 song Hound Dog as a major influence to him. The track, which sold 10 million copies globally, was one of Elvis’ best-selling songs of all time. On listening to the track for the first time Springsteen said: “When I heard it, it just shot straight through to my brain,” and added, “I realised, suddenly, that there was more to life than what I’d been living. I was then in pursuit of something and there’d been a vision laid out before me. You were dealing with the pure thrust, the pure energy of the music itself. I was so very young but it still hit me like a thunderbolt.”
He even confessed to “breaking in” to Elvis’ home, Graceland, in 1985. Springsteen revealed how a tour brought him to Memphis, Tennessee, so he took a detour and visited the King’s residence. Upon seeing a light on in Elvis’ house, Springsteen plucked up the courage to hop the fence. Speaking to the crowd at another gig, the star recalled: “I jumped up over the wall and I started runnin' up the driveway, which when I look back on it now was kind of a stupid thing to do because I hate it when people do it at my house." After explaining who he was the guards told him Elvis wasn’t home, before ushering the star off the premises. “Anyway, at the time, I was filled with the enthusiasm of youth and ran up the driveway and I got to the front door and I was just about to knock, and guards came out of the woods and they asked me what I wanted.”

It was in the late 1950s that the first Asian records featuring Elvis' music were released. Hundreds of records followed afterwards many with beautiful covers in different variations and with beautifully coloured vinyl. However no collector's guide to Elvis' Asian vinyl has ever been published. There has never even been an information booklet on these Elvis albums.

'Summer Festival 1970: The Rehearsals' New MRS set: MRS have announced a 3CD Deluxe set titled ‘SUMMER FESTIVAL 1970 – THE REHEARSALS’ on 12th March 2021.
The CDs contain rehearsal highlights from one of the most memorable periods in Elvis’ career - his captivating performances at The International Hotel Las Vegas in the summer of 1970. These truly historical recordings, remastered and restored capture the raw and early development of songs that were performed weeks later in Las Vegas. The accompanying 40-page booklet includes rare photographs taken at some of these rehearsal sessions.
As usual MRS has spared no expense in our remastering techniques. For the first time ever all, the tracks listed have had repairs and restorations having now the same mastering techniques, used on such recent MRS releases such as ‘Made in Germany’ and ‘Such a Night in Pearl Harbor’. A sample sound of this will circulate on forums within days of this announcement.
The 180g 3LP Gatefold version will be announced soon.

Please note: This is a prequel to a series of releases coming out this year from MRS. In that series will be a totally new and unreleased soundboard from the Summer Festival in 1970. A recording never heard before, stay tuned.

Tom Jones Talks Elvis (again): Once again Sir Tom Jones was talking about his friendship with Elvis, this time on this week's Graham Norton Show.
Jones re-told the story about his first meeting with Elvis.
"It was in 1965, I arrived in L.A. and it was wonderful. We were staying on the Sunset Strip.
I was like, 'God, this is unbelievable! My my first year in show business.'
I had to go to Paramount Studios to record a song or something and they said Elvis Presley is going to be there tomorrow and he would like to meet you.
I thought, 'Elvis Presley wants to meet me?' It was unbelievable.
And I went there to go and see about the song and they said 'Elvis is filming and once they stopped you can go in.'
So I did and they closed the doors again and I'm standing at the back there with the Memphis Mafia, these guys that work for him and Elvis in this little mock helicopter with this girl.

They did a scene and I'm looking like, 'My God, there's Elvis Presley.' And they said, 'OK cut,' and he looked across and waved.
I was like, you know, looking at these fellas and they said, 'Elvis is waving at you, wave back!'"
So he gets out of this helicopter and he starts walking towards me. I had a single record out at the moment, it was my third single, With These Hands. It was a ballad, a beautiful song.
And Elvis is walking towards me going 'With these hands, I will cling to you. With these hands,' and I'm going, 'My God, if the boys back home could see me now.'
- It was unbelievable."
Sir Tom and Elvis were incredibly close with the King's lifelong friend Jerry Schilling revealing the singers would often duet with one another into the early hours of the morning.
"Elvis didn't really hang out with other entertainers that much, but if there was one artist that Elvis truly called a friend and hung out with the most, it was Tom Jones," Schilling told the BBC.

Elvis' samurai sword found hidden in Graceland drawer: Back in 1982, five years after Elvis Presley died, Graceland was opened as a museum for the first time. When preparing the house for public viewing, the archives team found that most of the drawers were empty but in a few The King had left behind some real treasures. One particular highlight was a samurai sword discovered in a drawer of the Living Room.
The Graceland team had no idea how it got there until Dick Grob, Elvis' Head of Security from 1967-1977, told the story behind it. Appearing on the Gates of Graceland web series, he said the incident took place in late 1976 or early 1977, in the last year of The King's life. Elvis was upstairs and was already in his pyjamas as was getting ready to go to bed. |

Dick said how he got a call from his security team member Harold Lloyd on the gates, saying there was a guy in uniform who wanted to see the Head of Security. Dick thought it would be one of his police officer friends but it turned out to be an elderly Japanese veteran in his military uniform and carrying a samurai sword.
Struggling with his English, the soldier said: "I brought this to give to Mr Presley. I was an officer in the Japanese military during World War II and I want to apologise to you and to Mr Presley for us fighting you guys. I'm really sorry about that.
Because Mr Presley studied karate and learned from Mr Ed Parker, who was a champion in Japan, I want to give this to Mr Presley as a token of my appreciation."

Touched by this, Dick went up to the house to see if Elvis was available. But The King didn't want to have to get dressed to go down there as he was about to go to sleep. So Dick went back down to Graceland's gates and told the Japanese veteran, saying Elvis appreciated this but was already in his pyjamas.
So as a courtesy the Head of Security took the soldier around on one of the golf carts to show him the grounds, while the Japanese man left Dick with the samurai sword to give to Elvis later.

(Book Review): Kid of the King (Liz Presley): The world knows Lisa Marie Presley to be the only child of Elvis and Priscilla. In this new book, Liz Presley claims to be the “older sibling” of Lisa Marie - a claim that will be met with derision and disbelief by most fans.
EIN’s Nigel Patterson offers his views on Ms Presley’s claim and the author’s wider story which traverses her struggles with gender identity (Liz was born ‘David’), a troubled upbringing, becoming successful in business, fulfilling her dream to be a singer, and, most importantly, finding “herself” and her “real family”. Regardless of what readers think of the author’s claim, EIN’s Nigel Patterson found that there is an important message reflected in Kid of the King.

Elvis 'A Star Is Born' Contract: While most fans know about Barbra Streisand asking Elvis to appear in her movie 'A Star Is Born' it is a real surprise to know that the proposed agreement for his version is actually in the Graceland archives.
In a new 'Inside The Archives' video Angie Marchese brings out the contract in a black folder.
Included in the contract was $1000 per week expenses for Elvis and First Class transportation to all locations. Also she notes, “Elvis would be entitled to first position credit and 100 per cent of the title above the title.”
It’s pretty detailed! Goes into marketing as well as producing and photography and everything that goes along with making an Elvis movie.”
In the end Elvis never made another movie but continued touring throughout 1976 and some of the following year.

Nancy Sinatra Talks Elvis: Nancy Sinatra may be 80 and cut off by Covid, but she's still ready to walk all over Donald Trump. As her greatest songs, including 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'', are reissued she recently reflected on her friendship with Elvis and her hopes for peace in the USA.
In a 1960 episode of the show, Nancy was charged with welcoming Elvis Presley back from his military service in Germany. She had met Elvis before at Fort Dix, courtesy of her father, and wasn't intimidated: "Elvis was lovely. What a great guy. What a sweet, polite, wonderful man." When Nancy starred alongside him in the 1968 action flick Speedway, they became close and on the night Lisa Marie was born in February 1968 Elvis called Nancy with the news - "He treated me as a good friend. Elvis said he felt so grateful that she was born into a loving, secure life. He mentioned how he felt pain for the babies born that same night in poverty. I knew what he meant."
Sinatra agrees that Elvis probably felt a kinship with her because she understood the difference between the superstar and the human being. For Nancy, living amid her father's stratospheric success never dissuaded her from following that path. The only event that derailed her was her first marriage, to the pop star Tommy Sands in 1960. "I was old-fashioned. I married as a virgin. We were both way too young. You find that out, don't you?" For five years of marriage she put her career on hold. She blames herself. "I made the stumbling block, had I had a sexual life prior, I would not have married. In those days you got married to have sex, sadly."

Quentin Tarantino's use in 2003 of her 1966 cover of Cher's Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) in Kill Bill. The song was an accident. At the end of every record, Sinatra and her arranger, Billy Strange, used to do duets; just his guitar and her voice. She started singing the riff. "It became such a classic, but it was a throwaway. I was stunned that Quentin Tarantino was interested. I'd never met him."
Sinatra has some sage advice for this younger generation. "If young people have an opportunity, they have to examine it carefully. Don't pooh-pooh it because it's not the ideal situation." She is looking forward to peace in the US again, but with cautious optimism. "I need to get over fighting back if I'm going to survive. Carrying that angst is not healthy. I hope we can get back to the freedoms we enjoy. I worry. I don't want my granddaughters to grow up in a nation full of hate."

Lisa Marie Thanks Fans: Lisa Marie recently broke her self-imposed silence to send a heartfelt message to fans.
On Monday Lisa Marie celebrated her 53rd birthday and shared a beautiful picture with her eldest daughter Riley Keough and twins Finley and Harper.
She had been keeping quiet following the sudden accidental death of her son, Benjamin, last July.
Lisa Marie wrote: "Thank you for all of the overwhelming birthday wishes from everyone.
Like everyday, I couldn’t have made it through without these three by my side. - LMP"
Riley is Lisa Marie's daughter and eldest child from her first marriage to musician Danny Keogh. The actress, model and producer has carved out a successful career in independent cinema.
Benjamin was Riley's little brother and four years younger.
Benjamin Keough, who bore a remarkable resemblance to Elvis, was an aspiring musician and artist. A small family funeral service was held at the end of July. Benjamin was buried at Graceland in the Meditation Garden, next to Elvis, Vernon, Gladys and grandmother Minnie Mae.

This show was first released on 'The Man In White - Volume 3' released in 2003. Now -18 year later- all performances have been newly remastered and speed corrected where necessary. And for the first time on cd the camera sound recordings of this show. Including a booklet with information and photos from this great show! PLUS some background information about these recordings.

Happy 53rd Birthday Lisa Marie!: It's hard to believe but today is Lisa Marie's 53rd birthday. Lisa Marie was born February 1st 1968, nine months to the day after Elvis and Priscilla's wedding in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967.
The world has long been fascinated with the children of celebrities. While she has had her ups and downs life must have been a truly emotional roller-coaster being the daughter of Elvis. Unlike many celebrity children Lisa Marie has been famous her entire life, pretty much every second.
Cameras were in Priscilla’s Baptist Memorial Hospital room in Memphis, Tenn., after Lisa Marie was born in 1968. And they even followed her parents, with Priscilla in a wheelchair, as they headed home for the first time.
Recently Graceland archivist Angie Marchese revealed a “secret drawer” located in the corridor next to the kitchen on the way to the Jungle Room. Inside you can see Lisa Marie’s graffiti which reads, “Lisa’s home Graceland” with a smiley face.
Hopefully Lisa Marie can find happiness again in 2021.

Jerry Scheff Happy Birthday: It is hard to believe but the great Jerry Scheff turned 80 years old on January 31, 2021.
It was back in 1969 that James Burton asked Jerry Scheff to join Elvis' new 'TCB Band' to perform at Elvis' stunning return to live performances in 1969. Scheff then worked with Elvis from 1969 to 1973 and later returned for the final years 1975 to 1977. Jerry can be seen in 'Elvis: That's The Way It Is', 'On Tour' and 'Aloha From Hawaii'.
Jerry however started playing with up-coming stars like Billy Preston (The Beatles etc) as far back as 1965 before recording with the likes of Sammy Davis Jr and Neil Diamond. There is also the strange oddity of Red West calling him up to play on Elvis’ ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ session. Red West asked "Are you Jerry Scheff the trumpet player?", to which Jerry of course agreed - although he had never played trumpet before in his life!
Jerry Scheff was 80 on January 31st. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jerry.

"Sun Records" Sold!: The private music publishing company 'Primary Wave' has bought the iconic Sun Records label including its 6000 song masters with such classic recordings as Carl Perkins “Blue Suede Shoes,” Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire,” Johnny Cash’s “I Walk The Line,” Roy Orbison’s “Ooby Dooby” and Billy Lee Riley’s “Red Hot” among them. Elvis Presley's SUN recording are not part of the deal. Suggestions are that the deal was for US$30 million. SUN records still turns over around $4 million a year.
The deal also included the Sun Records trademark, which sources say is also a very profitable component, as well as the Sun Diner in Nashville and its merch business too. John Singleton -- brother of the late Shelby Singleton who purchased the Sun label back in 1969 from founder and industry legend Sam Phillips -- will stay on overseeing the Sun Records operation.

that they will continue to reach new heights for the crown jewel of the music business created by Sam Phillips, which my brother, Shelby, and I have kept alive and relevant for the past 50 years” John Singleton said in a statement.
Primary Wave will also provide additional resources to expand the Sun Records brand, which can now tap into the company’s marketing, branding, digital strategy and licensing and synch opportunities.
Sun Records is currently distributed by the label itself through direct digital licensing deals and by licensing the masters to well-known established re-issue labels like Charly Records and Bear Family Records.

'His Hand In Mine Sessions' New FTD deluxe set: The first FTD announcement for 2021, another deluxe set in the on-going "complete" sessions series the 'His Hand In Mine Sessions'.
This 8” deluxe 3-CD package features a 28-page booklet with an insightful essay, recording data, memorabilia and rare photos.
EIN Note: Many collectors will be wondering what new takes are included that were not on the excellent and near complete FTD 'Classic Album' from 2006.
We can only find two or three officially unreleased outtakes in the tracklist, 'In My Father's House' (w/p Take 1) & Take 8 plus possibly 'Surrender' incomplete Take 4 where the ending was spliced to complete the master.

Luhrmann’s ELVIS movie now for 2022 release: Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS biopic, now currently in production in Australia, has moved its official release date from November 5, 2021 to June 3, 2022.
The movie will explore the life and music of Elvis ( Austin Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.
Olivia DeJonge, Gary Clark, Jr., Yola, Shonka Dukureh, Shannon Sanders, Lenesha Randolph, Jordan Holland, Kelvin Harrison Jr. , Alton Mason also star.
Australia's David Wenham will play TV director Steve Binder. The biopic also stars Natasha Bassett as Dixie Locke, Xavier Samuel as Scotty Moore, Leon Ford as Tom Diskin, Kate Mulvany as Marion Keisker, Gareth Davies as Bones Howe, Charles Grounds as Billy Smith, Josh McConville as Sam Phillips, and Adam Dunn as Bill Black.

Jimmie Rodgers dies [composer of 'It's Over']: James (Jimmie) Rodgers composer of Number 1 'Honeycomb', 'Kisses Sweeter Than Wine' and 'It’s Over' which Elvis featured in his stunning Aloha TV performance died on January 18, aged 87.

... The death of Jimmie Rodgers at age 87 from kidney disease and COVID-19 complications on Jan. 18, 2021, prompted a deep dive into his discography. Between 1957 and 1967, the Camas, Washington-raised artist accumulated 14 Top 40 Billboard singles such as “Honeycomb” [No. 1], “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” [No. 7], “Oh-Oh, I’m Falling In Love Again” [No. 7], “Secretly” [No. 3], “Are You Really Mine?” [No. 10], and “Bimbombey” [No. 11]. Rodgers’ composition “It’s Over” [No. 37 POP, Glen Campbell and drummer Hal Blaine were on the session] was given an orchestral makeover by Elvis Presley during his innovative Aloha from Hawaii satellite broadcast.
A songwriter and acoustic guitarist since his Korean stint in the Air Force, Rodgers’ career trajectory found him exploring pop, folk, country and western and even gospel. Rodgers pioneered folk rock and had an unusual guitar style where he strummed hard right hand rhythm barre chords with his thumb. A lap steel guitar belonged to his parents, and Rodgers learned by tuning to an open E chord. Richie Havens was a similar picker, albeit on a more accomplished scale. Towards the end of Rodgers’ four-year tenure with Morris Levy’s notorious Roulette Records, he waxed “Sloop John B” under its alternate title of “The Wreck of the John B”.
A diverse array of singers- e.g. the Weavers, Johnny Cash, soul stirring balladeer Jerry Butler, Barry McGuire, Dick Dale and His Del-Tones, The Ventures, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed — have tackled the traditional folk standard recounting a sailor’s homesickness going back to the dawn of Truman’s second presidential administration.
Founding Beach Boy Al Jardine acknowledges the Kingston Trio’s 1958 recording, found on their debut self-titled album, as inspiring Brian Wilson’s landmark Pet Sounds production which enlisted the prolific Wrecking Crew for a lush, Spectorized “Wall of Sound” intertwined with multi-layered group harmonies. “John B” was a runaway smash in the hands of America’s Band, narrowly missing the top of the charts in late spring 1966 and becoming an oldies radio perennial.

In spite of a heart attack and earlier major altercation with the Police, the deeply religious Rodgers toured intermittently, singing and playing guitar live to deep cuts including the Buddy Holly-dedicated “500 Miles Away from Home.” Elvis fans heard him interviewed on Memphis mafia alum George Klein’s SiriusXM Elvis show. In 2016 Rodgers exhibited symptoms of dementia and was living in a care facility in California at the time of his passing.

New "Letters of Colonel Tom Parker" Book: Another confirmation that music writer and Elvis author Peter Guralnick is working on a new book around the “letters” of Colonel Tom Parker. In an interview with Jim Patterson (for chapter16.org) Peter Guralnick said: I’ve started now on a project that initially I wanted to start 20 years ago, which was a collection of Colonel Parker’s letters, which I would select and annotate and introduce. That’s actually becoming a reality.
This will give us a completely different picture of Colonel Parker than most people have, because the letters are so eloquent, so witty, also so smart and so to-the-point that they’re just fascinating.
I learnt when I told both Sam Phillips and Col Parker the title of the first volume of my biography of Elvis, “Last Train to Memphis,” Sam got hugely indignant. “So what are you talking about? The last train? There’s going to be lots |

more trains. This isn’t the last train. You know, the future is looking bright ahead.”
At the time Col Parker said to me, “What are you talking about? We took trains and buses... You know, money doesn’t grow on trees.” So I thought, okay, that’s it. No more revelations along those lines.

| 'Don't Be Cruel: The Story of Bill Black' New Book for 2020: News update that Danish super-fan Henrik Knudsen is working on a new book about Elvis' first 'Blue Moon Boys' bassist Bill Black. After quitting Elvis' band in 1957 he had a successful solo-career with The Bill Black Combo. The working title for this project is 'Don't Be Cruel - The Story of Bill Black'. Bill Black's brother, Johnny Black, is contributing to the project, which will be published by the Memphis Mansion label.
More news when we have it, a release date has not been decided.

(Interview) Brandon Yip (author of Elvis Presley “All Shook Up” in Canada): Elvis only performed outside the USA on five occasions – all shows in Canada in 1957. Canadian born and bred writer and author, Brandon Yip, formed an obsession about Elvis’ Canadian concerts.
Dissatisfied with the information he had read about the shows, particularly Elvis’ final Canadian performance in Vancouver, Brandon went in search of more information, tracking down and interviewing people who were lucky enough to see Elvis “live” in Canada.
The result of his research is his new book, Elvis Presley “All Shook Up” in Canada. It includes first-hand accounts by fans and legendary Canadian radio DJ, Red Robinson.
Brandon recently took time out to talk with EIN’s Nigel Patterson about his book and what he found.

Phil Spector Dead Aged 81: Phil Spector the massively influential music producer whose “Wall of Sound” productions revolutionized the way pop music was recorded in the sixties, died 16 January at the age of 81.
Spector’s life was tumultuous and ultimately tragic as his groundbreaking studio accomplishments were overshadowed by his 2009 conviction for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.
At the height of his career he was hailed as the first person to see the potential of the recording studio as an instrument in itself. The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson described him as the most influential music producer he knew. (Right: In the studio with Darlene Love and Cher)
Phil Spector always recorded using LA's "Wrecking Crew" musicians who were in effect "The Beach Boys" on Brian Wilson's major recordings.
Similarly it was the "Wrecking Crew" who backed ELVIS on his NBC TV "68 Comeback Special" while many of the same musicians ie super-drummer Hal Blaine worked on countless Elvis sessions.

Phil Spector began recording on the West Coast in L.A.’s Gold Star Studios where soon produced four Top 10 hits in 1963: the Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron”, “Then He Kissed Me”, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” and greatest of all The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby”.
He had twenty Top 40 hits between 1961 and 1965. Co-Produced The Beatles “Let It Be” with his most stunning achievements The Righteous Brothers “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” which sold over 2 million copies and became another Number One hit plus Ike and Tina Turner's “River Deep – Mountain High”.
John Lennon called him the greatest music producer of all time, (with him he produced the song “Imagine”) but Spector’s inspirational career came to an end in the late 1970s.
Phil Spector had a few ELVIS connections. Being a friend of composer "Doc Pomus" Spector produced some demos for Elvis including the Pot Luck track 'Night Rider'.
Darlene Love (of The Blossoms) was also a lead singer for Spector. She commented, "Both were important men in my musical life. Elvis looked like something that God just created, just for us - while the other proved himself to be a jackass."
Phil Spector was a huge fan of Elvis and noted in an interview, "Elvis is sensational. He can do anything with his voice. He

can sing anything you want him to, anyway you tell him. Elvis is the unquestionable King of Rock n' Roll".
In an interesting sidenote Phil Spector also introduced Elvis to his personal bodyguard Mike Stone who was similarly interested in martial arts. Soon after this Mike Stone would become Priscilla's Karate instructor and that particular affair would help lead to Elvis and Priscilla's divorce in 1973.
Phil Spector knew that his studio magnificence was tempered by the lows of his depression and what he described as the demons inside him.
"I'm probably relatively insane" he told the UK Daily Telegraph in 2003 just before he murdered actress Lana Clarkson. "I'm my own worst enemy."
He needed serious help and therapy, he never got what he needed. After the 2009 murder trial he was sentenced to 19 years to life - Spector died in prison due to Covid19 complications.

Assistant Professor Mathias Haeussler has written a powerful account of how Elvis’ role in each of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s was an evolutionary one, reflecting the broader socio-cultural and political changes of each decade.
The subject matter is diverse, ranging from Elvis’ image as a threat to the morals of youth in the 1950s (in a sense mirroring the threat of communism), to the cultural imperialism reflected his 1960s movies (while American culture and political influence was spreading globally), and Elvis’ decline in the 1970s (at a time when America was reeling from its own excesses including the disastrous Vietnam War).

1970 rehearsal cds was expensive at £180 but this set at £111 (US$240) for a 200-page book (not totally on Elvis) plus two 1976 soundboard concerts (with audio doco) seems ludicrous. Atlanta December 1976 features a very poor piano-heavy audio mix.
Hopefully FTD see reason and release the soundboards as a CD- double-pack after this limited edition sells-out -

Elvis was there with Memphis girlfriend Bonnie Bunkley as well as Joe Esposito & friends. Elvis also met up with one of his favourite songwriters Don Robertson.

'Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony' Watch live: Happy Birthday, Elvis! EPE plus a very few Elvis fans gathered at Graceland to celebrate Elvis' birthday with three days of social-distanced events and, of course, Birthday cake.
The 'Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony' was earlier today at Graceland with reserved but free admission.
Due to mask-wearing and social-distancing, as well as wet windy weather, the ceremony and the birthday cake cutting was basically a non-event.
This year, Elvis decided to stay upstairs and watch from his bedroom window. You can watch the REPLAY ceremony - with nothing to really see, it runs 10 minutes

Buzzy Forbess has passed away: EIN has heard the sad news that Elvis’ high school close friend, Buzzy Forbess, has passed away.
Elvis and Buzzy were good friends at Humes High and Elvis’ early days at Sun.

In his freshman year of high school Elvis teamed up with three friends, Buzzy Forbess, Paul Dougher and Farley Guy, to start a lawn business. With a push lawn mower that his father, Vernon, purchased for him, and a few sickles, Elvis and his team mowed yards at the cost of $4.00 per yard.
Buzzy noted that "In the early days Elvis didn’t have the wiggle and what-have-you then but some things about Elvis never changed. But when Elvis started singing he’d always affect people just with his voice and singing."
Over the years Buzzy was interviewed in various newspaper, magazine and Elvis television documentary specials, contributed to several books and helped inspire an upcoming book about Elvis’ appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.

Peloton Exclusive Elvis remixes: Peloton (Bicycles / Workout company) is the only place anyone can hear a trio of classic Elvis Presley songs remixed by DJ Dillon Francis, Big Boi and Chromeo, at least for now. T
The songs, Do The Vega, Catchin’ On Fast, and Clean Up Your Own Backyard, will play out as part of Peloton’s Artist Series of themed workouts.
The remixes are owned by Sony and will be an exclusive on Peloton for an initial launch window.
Elvis fans who don’t have a Peloton subscription needn’t worry as the company is offering a two-month free trial of the Peloton app, which offers classes for strength, stretching, meditation, yoga and everything else.

Peloton has, for a while now, had the Artist Series workouts in which an entire class is backed up with music from a single artist.
The most notable name on the list is Beyoncé but you can also enjoy a ride backed by Alicia Keys, Britney Spears and Lizzo.
Peloton teased an Elvis-themed artist series on December 13th, encouraging people to “move to the sounds” of the King.
After the initial launch it is possible that Sony might release all three remixes commercially thereafter.

Brand New Elvis Army Footage: A lovely surprise for New Year as Chicago Film Archives uploads 18 minutes of new footage of Elvis entering the army.
The quality is excellent and you can see the apprehension on Elvis' face as he heads to a very uncertain future.
Described as, "Singer Elvis Presley is processed into the Army on March 24, 1958 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He talks to reporters, fills out paperwork, and gets a physical examination. Elvis' parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, are seen briefly, looking dour. The day was dubbed "black Monday" for his fans by the press.
The singer entered regular Army service as a private, rather than joining Special Services, in which he would have entertained troops."

Decades After His Death, The Estate Of Elvis Presley Is Still Making A TON Of Money: January 2021, Elvis has been dead for 43 years and he is STILL making a TON of money. Sure, the coronavirus pandemic has slowed down the tourist traffic to Graceland, his former home turned museum devoted to all things Elvis. In a typical year, Graceland brings in more than $10 million of Elvis' estate's earnings. However, 2020, is anything but typical in all ways. Graceland was closed for two months due to Covid-19 and is now operating at reduced capacity. That said, the King of Rock and Roll is the fifth highest-paid celebrity of the year with $23 million in earnings. That's pretty incredible considering it's been more than four decades since Elvis left the building for the last time.
Elvis' earnings from beyond the grave come from two main sources, album sales and Graceland. Despite album sales that are still surprisingly good (even when compared to living artists), Graceland still brings in the bulk of his post-death income. |

Elvis sells more than one million albums per year – yes, albums. Elvis is timeless and iconic but the bulk of his fan base is collecting retirement benefits and still playing vinyl albums – something they have in common with hipsters. And isn't Elvis in a way the original hipster? However, Elvis is not, as of yet at least, trending on Spotify, so with no downloading of his music, we expect Elvis' income to wane a bit over the coming years as his biggest fans are, quite literally, dying off (and hopefully getting to meet their idol in the afterlife).
Elvis also earns royalties from concerts and old TV appearances, DVD sales, and the royalties from his movies being shown on television. Elvis' estate has been pretty savvy at pivoting with the times over the years, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to wake up at some point in the near future with a "Release Radar" email from Spotify announcing some all-new Elvis feature. And then there's always the hologram tour that could happen when we get Covid-19 under control and can have concerts and festivals again.

In her introduction, the author establishes an important context for Elvis’ longevity (or lack of longevity) and health issues, this being his family tree.... Hoedel identifies the genetic disorder as Antitrypsin Deficiency, a condition which can result in lung and/or liver disease. In this respect, her discussion of the life and death of Gladys Presley is thought provoking..

(Book Review) From Elvis in Memphis (Eric Wolfson): The 150th volume in the popular Bloomsbury Academic 33 1/3 series of music history and criticism books is Eric Wolfson’s From Elvis in Memphis (due out on 12 November).
EIN’s Nigel Patterson recently sat down and submerged himself in what is the first (and long overdue) extensive examination of any Elvis album.

UPDATED- 'Elvis: St Louis & Spokane 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
Released as a 2-CD 5” digi-pak, this new FTD set features Elvis at the Kiel Auditorium on March 22 1976 and The Coliseum on April 27 1976.
Both shows were "Closing Nights" of these short 1976 tours where Elvis would often go that little bit further for his loving fans.
Larrie Londin played drums with the TCB band on the March 1976 tour so it will be a treat for collectors to get an official release featuring 'A Different Beat' with Larrie Londin playing at St Louis on March 22, 1976.

'ELVIS In The 2010s' A Personal Review of the Past Decade: Rather like Elvis’s own career, each decade since Elvis’s death appears to have had a theme or identity of its own. Clearly the late 1970s were difficult for RCA as they struggled to find the right direction with which to take their posthumous releases, and so it was the 1980s that was the decade when the company slowly but surely learned how to look back at Elvis's legacy and start to make some sense of it.
The 1990s were when that reached a peak, with the decades boxed sets, and the Elvis in the 90s series, thus bringing virtually the whole catalogue back into print in a coherent way.
The 2000s were when errors of judgement at retail level started to occur (despite huge successes like Elv1s), but also when FTD came into its own and flourished.
And so what will we make of Elvis releases of the 2010s when we look back on them from the future?

The latest Venus Productions multimedia set revisits this tour with a composite book, DVD and CD set. 'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for? In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..

The VINYL Boom: Over 7.6 million vinyl LPs were sold in the USA during the first half of 2018, a 20% increase from the previous year, while in Australia vinyl sales increased by $3 million, the same increase of 20%. In the same period CD sales however dropped by 15%.
Elvis vinyl is still selling very nicely with ‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ recently in the UK Top ten VINYL charts.

... What is there to say about Elvis Presley that hasn’t already been said?
It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. 16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl.
Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special.
Presley was an incredibly prolific artist so getting this collection down to 31 tracks was no easy feat. It also includes the ALLC Junkie XL remix.
What was achieved with ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits though, is a

collection that gives you all the highlights you need from The King’s career to showcase the incredible impact he had on music. The album opens with Heartbreak Hotel and there isn’t a single filler track here.
It’s actually near impossible to pick out highlights across the 2LPs because every single one of these songs is a classic.
Of course no Elvis collection would be complete without Suspicious Minds and that track is near the end of the track listing on the final side.
The release features the artwork from the original 2002 release and it’s a beautiful, high-quality gatefold. I mentioned earlier about the gold vinyl but what I’ve not commented on yet is the sound. The CD version was a little patchy given that the songs were all recorded at different times. It’s not as noticeable on the vinyl release and the quality is crystal clear. The warm crackle of vinyl adds to the overall feel too.
ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan. While he had plenty of great songs that aren’t featured here, this collection truly is the definitive one to own. There’s not a single bad song here and it’s lengthy enough to give you value for money. The whole vinyl package is fantastic and it looks as good as it sounds.
They don’t make artists like Elvis anymore and they probably never will again.

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
