'1956, Elvis Presley’s Pivotal Year': TIME magazine featured this recent article by SONY/FTD's music producer and consultant Roger Semon. The article helps explain to readers what the new deluxe box-set 'Young Man With The Big Beat' is all about.
... "In the mid-1950s, the post-war Eisenhower era of social conformity in America was at its peak, and musically, the most threatening image appeared to be Bill Haley’s kiss-curl as he sang “Rock Around The Clock.” That all changed on Jan. 28, 1956, when a raw and electric Elvis Presley made his breakthrough on the CBS program Stage Show. Presley’s good looks, sensuous moves and mesmerizing voice made him a sensation overnight. But it wasn’t until a third appearance on the show that Presley truly challenged the status quo. On Feb. 11, the singer performed “Heartbreak Hotel” and by April, the single would be #1 on the Billboard chart. At last, teenagers had music of their own to swoon over while their parents continued listening to Frank Sinatra and Mario Lanza....

Elvis Movie Night Feat. Suzanna Leigh In Germany: THIS WEEKEND - The German fan service "The King's World" is going to present its big show on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 in Bonn, Germany by doing an "Elvis Movie Night" ("Elvis Film-Nacht").
Headlining star of the event will be British-American actress Suzanna Leigh, who starred with Elvis in the movie "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" 45 years ago.
The movie will be shown on a big screen with Mrs. Leigh commenting it afterwards and being available to the fans for autographs and pictures. Mrs. Leigh never before appeared at an Elvis event in Germany, so that many fans are very excited to meet her for the very first time. Co-star of the "Elvis Movie Night" will be Belgian Elvis interpreter "Elvis Junior" who is going to provide a live performance featuring his versions of some of Elvis' greatest hits.
The "Elvis Movie Night" will take place at the "Schützenhof" in Bonn- Tannenbusch (Hohe Str. 36, 53119 Bonn, Germany). Doors will be open at 6.00 pm, program starts at 6.30 pm. Admission is only 17- EUR... Go HERE for details.

Elvis ’68 Comeback Special Tribute at The Emmy Awards: Held this September 10 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, this year’s Emmy awards gave a special nod to Elvis' 1968 television special. Priscilla Presley along with Steve Binder, Emmy Award-winning producer and director of "Elvis '68 Comeback Special," introduced one of the classic scenes from the special that helped re-launch the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s career and changed the way entertainment specials looked on television forever.
The two also presented four statues during the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy® Awards.

.. It's been voted the worst album in Rock 'N' Roll history, which is totally suited being that it was the brainchild of the old Carny Con-man who had no idea on how to handle Elvis in the 70's and now it's being re-released (again) on CD by an import label.
Comically the press release boasts "Now we have the definitive release of this 1974 album classic!"... Sorry but this is far from a "classic". The original album was released on Parkers own label, "Boxcar" in 1974 but was soon bought out from Parker by RCA who then released it themselves. The album failed to chart here in the UK but in the USA it reached #130 on the
Billboard Album Chart.

Elvis returns to Tupelo, 26th September 1956; Fifty-Five years ago Elvis Presley returned to his hometown of Tupelo as a shining star. Elvis performed two concerts at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show and the day was officially proclaimed "Elvis Presley Day".
In 1956 Tupelo was still only a small town of around 8,000 total population, yet something over 15,000 people turned up that weekend to celebrate Elvis' homecoming. These stunning concerts, performed to his local audience, were a great insight into the real Elvis performing live in front of a large crowd. Elvis was in fine humor, joking about his success and teasing the audience. He commented about the sensational ‘I Was The One’ joking "It’s plum pitiful the way we do it." The Evening Show was much wilder. The addition of ‘Baby, Let’s Play House’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ plus the emergency announcements asking everyone to calm down all add to the great excitement. The bump and grind of the extended final 'Hound Dog' was fabulous.

Elvis Presley joins the Beatles at Liverpool's Pier Head museum: Jumpsuits and pompadours have arrived in Liverpool for the launch of Elvis and Us at the Beatles Story. The exhibition is being billed as Europe’s biggest ever showcase of the King of Rock and Roll, celebrating his relationship with the Beatles through artefacts and costumes.
Kevin Kern, Director of Public Relations at EPE (right), travelled over from Memphis with 80 artefacts to go on display.
Among them is the jumpsuit Elvis wore the first time he performed a Beatles track – Yesterday–- on stage and the pool table over which he first met the Liverpool band.
Kern said: "The relationship between Memphis and Liverpool goes back to the days of the cotton trade. Then these people called Elvis and the Beatles came along and strengthened the connection. Liverpool is the |

The exhibit covers all of Elvis’s career. Genuine outfits will be on display – each one custom-made and some weighing up to 40lbs.
It will also feature a selection of the 3,000 costumes and 400 pairs of shoes from Vegas show Viva Elvis, which plays to audiences stateside 10 shows a week

This spread rapidly via the social media sites overnight and through to multiple messages on Larry Geller's own Facebook account causing much unnecessary angst amongst Larry's fans and friends.

'Alright, Okay, You Win' New Import CD: A Straight Arrow release audience Recording, from Detroit MI. Sept.29, 1974 afternoon show.
The publicity states... Since the late 70s, there were rumours that the tour opening in College Park was a complete disaster - one of the worst Elvis concerts ever. This rumour was first published in Jerry Hopkins' book, and it was repeated in various publications so many times that almost nobody had any doubt. In 2006, Straight Arrow released a CD called "CHAOS IN COLLEGE PARK" which was an eye-opener, and proof that it was rather decent concert with some fine performances, too.
According to several books, the Detroit, MI, September 29th, 1974 afternoon performance was another of the most controversial Elvis Presley events. In a recent book, "DAY BY DAY", it's said that Elvis was on stage for 30 minutes only, giving his worst concert of the tour.
In August, Straight Arrow obtained a bunch of tapes, among them a 1st generation copy of a previously unknown audience recording of this Detroit concert. The producers decided to release this particular recording because it is an interesting show in good sound quality. Will another myth be shattered? Is the show as bad as its reputation? Judge for yourself. It's worth pointing out that the running time is about an hour, and not 30 minutes.

"Young Man With The Big Beat" Detailed Review: David McGee in a detailed review for The Bluegrass Special writes about the special features included in "Young Man With The Big Beat," which will be in stores everywhere beginning September 27, 2011.
‘What Is Going On?’- In 1956 Elvis’s guitarist, Scotty Moore, asked the question.
Elvis supplied the resounding answer. And this new box-set chronicles that momentous year for the man who would be King.
"The heart of the five CD set is the two discs of Original Masters. Three other CDs flesh out the story of a landmark year in American music. A disc of outtakes (some previously released, some seeing the light of day for the first time) is pretty well narrowcast for Elvis die-hards who have a vested interest in hearing, say, 11 of the 12 takes of “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” or the same number of runs at “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” The real attraction of the Outtakes disc is the inclusion at the end of a 30-minute interview with Elvis conducted by trade journalist Robert Brown at New York’s Warwick Hotel on March 24, 1956."

After the release of Heartbreak Hotel... “They were back on the Hayride the following week for the first time in a month. A lot had happened in that month, but for Elvis and Scotty and Bill there had been no time to gauge it, and it didn’t appear all that different from everything else that had been building and going on for the last year. They did ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ for the first time, said Scotty Moore , ‘and that damn auditorium down there almost exploded. I mean, it had been wild before that, but it was more like playing down at your local camp, a home folks-type situation. But now they turned into--it was different faces, just a whole other… That’s the earliest I can remember saying, What is going on?’”

'Elvis Knife/Screwdriver' on Ebay: Elvis' great friend Marty Lacker is offering another unusual sixties item for auction. As described...
.... "One late afternoon in the 60's Elvis asked Marty to come up to his bedroom at Graceland because he wanted him to take care of something he wanted to do for Elvis' father. Elvis was still in bed as he often was until around 5:PM. Elvis then asked him to go up to the attic and get the item Elvis wanted enhanced to give to his father. Marty went out to the upstairs hallway and opened the door leading up to the |

attic and when he did the door knob was very loose and was about to come off.
When he came back down from the attic he told Elvis about the door knob and told him he'd get a Phillips screw driver and tighten the knob. Elvis then told him to wait a minute, he got out of bed and went into his bathroom and open his case sitting on the bathroom counter and came out with what looked like a big pocket knife. He lifted a thin bar out of the knife and Marty saw it was actually a Phillips screw driver head at the end of the the arm. He handed it to Marty and Marty went out to the hallway and tightened the door knob. Holding the pocket knife looking gadget out to give back to Elvis, Elvis just nonchalantly told him to hold on to it that he, Marty, might need it to use again someday. Marty just shook his head, put it in his pocket and when he got home he threw it in his briefcase and forgot about it. He's had it all these years and never used it again.
And that's the unusual story about this one of a kind, unusual Elvis item. It will now be owned by the highest bidder. - Item comes with a letter of authenticity from Marty Lacker.

Hardcore Fan Attended 81 Elvis Concerts: 60 year-old Palm Harbor resident Joe Makowski, became infatuated with the King of Rock and Roll at age 13. You may remember him being interviewed in the 1977 'Elvis In Concert' TV special.
Makowski says he saw Elvis in concert a total of 81 times from 1971 through 1977, “He never disappointed me, I think he was the greatest entertainer, with the greatest voice of all time,” he said.
Makowski's fascination with Presley began at the age of 13. He remembers the day well. December 8, 1964 Makowski went with friend to see the movie, "Roustabout" starring Elvis Presley. Makowski says he was immediately struck by Elvis' charisma. He couldn’t take his eyes off the screen. “I wanted to be just like that guy,” he said, “He was so cool.”
From that point on, Elvis became his hobby and passion. “If Elvis appeared on |

the cover of a fan magazine, I would buy it,” said Makowski. “I bought all his new records and slowly bought the older ones when I had the money.”
Soon he had all of Elvis’s records in his collection. “It was contagious,” said Makowski, “I got all of my friends hooked on Elvis too.”
The hobby continued into adulthood. As a postal worker, this die-hard Elvis fan would schedule his annual vacations around Presley’s concert schedule, “I saw Elvis perform in 15 different cities,” he said.
“One year in Las Vegas, I went to his concerts at the Hilton seven nights in a row. Each night, Elvis added something different and exciting to the show.”
In 1975, Makowski had the honor of meeting Presley after a New Year's Eve concert. At around 3:30 in the morning, Elvis arrived at his hotel with his entourage.
“I was waiting for him in the lobby.” said Makowski . “I called his name and told him I came all the way from New Jersey to see him. Elvis turned around and said ‘Thanks a lot man, it’s you fans that make all this possible.’ He signed an autograph for me and went on his way. I will never forget that moment.”
By early 1976, Makowski says he could see something was wrong with Elvis. His concerts were becoming erratic and the King of Rock and Roll did not always look well.
“At times he looked bloated and pale. When I got to shake his hand, his fingers were swollen and his face was puffy. It made me very sad,” said Makowski.
On June 25, 1977, Makowski went to an Elvis concert in Cincinnati, Ohio. The concert was videotaped by CBS-TV for an upcoming live album and television special. At the end of the concert, the CBS film crew interviewed Makowski about Elvis. The interview wound up being included in a TV show that was broadcast across the country.
The next day Makowski boarded a bus to Indianapolis to attend what turned out to be the last concert of Elvis Presley’s life.
Makowski continues to remember the King of Rock and Roll and recently made a trip to Graceland in Memphis to commemorate the August 16 anniversary of his death. He was among the first in line outside Graceland and told an associated press reporter, "The biggest thing I get out of it is seeing the young fans that weren't even born until years after he passed away."

'The Complete Louisiana Hayride Archives 1954-1956': Coming in 2011 from the ‘Memphis Recording Service’, in association with ‘Joseph A Tunzi’ (JAT Productions), is a release for the first time on CD, the complete live recordings of the Louisiana Hayride performances by Elvis Presley.
All of the 29 tracks therein are re-mastered using the most sophisticated technology. It will include restored and more complete versions of many of the tracks than ever before.
The CD will also contain the recent discovery of Elvis’ last performance on the Louisiana Hayride in December 1956. This will be a more complete version of the show and for the first time, be speed and pitch corrected, which Sony has failed to master for their upcoming release.
The 100 page bonus book has many rare and newly discovered photographs that were due to be shown first, in the upcoming FTD Sun book. More details and a firm release date of this will be announced shortly.

Elvis Talks About Cars, Love & Loneliness in Vintage Interview: At just 21, Elvis is not yet the most famous person on the planet, but he soon will be. He is sweet, innocent and soft-spoken, but already feels his destiny approaching – his fate to conquer the world with his music and find the girl who can take away his loneliness.
Now, a new audio recording of the young rockabilly singer – as part of a five-disc box set featuring interviews and live and studio recordings – from Mississippi captures him on the precipice of fame, daydreaming about cars and girls and, one day, fame and family.
"I don't smoke and I don't drink, and I love to go to movies," he tells his listeners in a recording included in the new deluxe Elvis 1956 package, due out Sept. 27. "Maybe someday I'm going to have a home and a family of my own, and I'm not going to budge from it. I was an only child, but maybe my kids won't be."
He also addresses the question that every American girl would soon wonder about: "Am I in love? No. I thought I've been in love, but I guess I wasn't. It just passed over. I guess I haven't met the girl yet, but I will."
Elvis had another love in the meantime: cars.

"The first car I ever bought was the most beautiful car I've ever seen," he says. "I parked it outside of my hotel the day I got it. I sat up all night just looking at it. And the next day, well, the thing caught fire and burned up on the road."
And of course, he explains why he can't stand still when he's singing.
"Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers," he says, "and some people just sway back and forth. I just sort of do them all together, I guess."

New FTDs delayed to Mid-October: The next FTD releases ('He Touched Me', '48 Hours To Memphis' and the 'Guitar Man' vinyl) have now been officially put back until the second week of October. This is due to FTD changing manufacturers, as well as other problems they've encountered.
FTD have informed ElvisAustralia that contrary to the previous publicity, '48 Hours To Memphis' is a mono release, albeit from a full professional 16-track multi track recording and mastered by Vic Anesini for fantastic sound quality!

This deluxe 4 CD set released by Backdraft is the ultimate January/February 1970 engagement package. ‘Rebooked at the International’ features multi-track recordings by RCA, including unreleased leftovers that did not make the ‘On Stage’ album. These are the original rough mixes made by Felton Jarvis in early 1970 in preparation for the up-coming ‘On Stage’ album. No repairs, No overdubs!
CD2 features the recordings that finally made the ‘On Stage’ album however, for the first time, is released in its original form before studio overdubs were added. The tracks are unedited, with extra long unedited dialogue in between songs that also were never included on the album. This is the ‘On Stage’ album that was meant to be, no overdubs, unedited and raw on stage directly from multi-track tapes.
CD3 features the left over tracks that never made it to the album. For the first time, it contains many unreleased songs in multi-track form along with some previous material that were recorded from the same shows.

Elvis and Us Exhibit Promo Film: You can now hear about Elvis’ influence and the thought behind the new Elvis and Us exhibit by watching the newest Elvis and Us Exhibition preview. Unfortunately no real Elvis/Beatles artefacts are shown.
Opening on October 5 along with The Beatles Story in Liverpool, England, 'Elvis and Us' features rare artefacts from the Graceland archives on display in the UK for the first time. This includes telegrams from Colonel Parker and Elvis to Ed Sullivan, rare video footage from the earliest days of Elvis' career, and much more.

Elvis Movie Night Feat. Suzanna Leigh In Germany: The German fan service "The King's World" is going to present its
next big show on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 in Bonn, Germany by doing an "Elvis Movie Night" ("Elvis Film-Nacht").
Headlining star of the event will be British-American actress Suzanna Leigh, who starred with Elvis in the movie "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" 45 years ago.
The movie will be shown on a big screen with Mrs. Leigh commenting it afterwards and being available to the fans for autographs and pictures. Mrs. Leigh never before appeared at an Elvis event in Germany, so that many fans are very excited to meet her for the very first time. Co-star of the "Elvis Movie Night" will be Belgian Elvis interpreter "Elvis Junior" who is going to provide a live performance featuring his versions of some of Elvis' greatest hits.
The "Elvis Movie Night" will take place at the "Schützenhof" in Bonn- Tannenbusch (Hohe Str. 36, 53119 Bonn, Germany). Doors will be open at 6.00 pm, program starts at 6.30 pm. Admission is only 17- EUR... Go HERE for details.

Top Ten strangest items of Elvis Presley memorabilia!: Following on from last week's very mistaken list of Elvis' Top 10 Most Expensive Elvis Presley clothes (see below) ,Wikicollecting now names their "Top Ten strangest items of Elvis Presley memorabilia". This one is interesting since it shows the craziness of Elvis collectors and the unbelievable impact Elvis' legacy has had on fans.
1) Jet - $700,000
The last jet Elvis ever owned, a 1962 Lockheed Jetstar JT 12-5, was sold for $700,000 in 2008 by Kruse International.
During his lifetime, Elvis owned three jets. The other two are in the Graceland Museum.
2) Autopsy and embalming tools – Est. $14,000
In 2010, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers announced that it planned to sell the autopsy and embalming tools used on Elvis.
The tools were offered for sale by an anonymous senior embalmer from the Memphis Funeral Home. |

Shortly after the planned sale was announced, the parent company of the funeral home, Service Corporation International, claimed ownership of the tools.
Due to this dispute over ownership, the items were withdrawn from the sale and have not appeared on the collectors’ market since.
3) Exercise bike - $12,000
An exercise bike owned by Elvis was sold by Guernsey’s in 2008 for $12,000.
The odometer on the gold bike read 69 miles at the time of sale.
4) Prescription bottle - $7,000
A prescription bottle for Benadryl 50mg, prescribed to Elvis Presley on 8/15/77 sold for $7000 at a Julien’s Auctions sale in 2009.
The bottle was prescribed by Dr. Nick the day before Elvis’ death. Dr. Nick was Elvis’ personal physician. |
5) X-Ray - $3,500
An x-ray of Elvis’ arm sold for $3,500 at a Fame Bureau auction in 2008.
The x-ray showed a fractured wrist that Elvis had obtained during a karate session.
6) Strand of hair - £1,055
A single strand of Elvis’ hair was sold for £1055 at a Henry Aldridge & Son auction in 2009.
The hair came from Homer Gill Gilleland, Elvis’ personal hairdresser.
Strands of Elvis’ hair can be purchased from celebrity hair store, A Small Piece of History, for around £50.
7) TV remote - $1,800
Elvis’ TV remote is being offered for sale by ElvisOwned.com for $1,800.
The large remote, for an RCA 2000 television set, was owned by Greg Page, who owned the television after Elvis.

8) Horse blanket - $1,800
Another item available from ElvisOwned.com is a red horse blanket used by Elvis for his horse Rising Sun. It was also used by Priscilla Presley and the website claims that hairs from the horses are still visible on the blanket.
The blanket comes from a lady called Rhonda who was good friends with Elvis’ cousin Harold Lloyd. It was Lloyd who gave the blanket to her.
9) Signed cast - $1,700
A cast signed by the King of Rock and Roll is being offered for sale by Elvisowned.com, a company specialising in the sale of items once owned by Presley.
The cast belonged to fan Diana Henry who saw Elvis in concert in the Las Vegas Hilton in 1975. According to the website Elvis stopped his show and went into the crowd to sign Diana’s cast. She begged him to sign it a second time and he did.
One of the signatures is slightly smudged in part, as, according to the site, a drop of Elvis’ sweat hit the cast as he was signing it.
10) Medical swab - $468
A medical swab used on Elvis was sold by Julien’s Auctions for $468.75 in 2010.
The swab was taken at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis on December 20 1967 and was obtained by a medical technician at the hospital.

Elvis' daughter, wearing a slimming black suit, arrived at NYC's The Theater at Lincoln Center alongside her snazzy-dressed partner of two years. Fans think that Lisa Marie has never looked better or more relaxed. Fashion Week in the Big Apple always seems to bring out the best in people!

Elvis' first guitar goes to Auction: Elvis Presley's first guitar is understandably old and tattered, the wood faded and held together by pieces of yellowed masking tape. But it’s still exciting music fans.
On Sept. 24 and 25, the guitar will be part of a rock ‘n’ roll auction presented by Guernsey’s Auction House, which will include more than 1,000 lots of memorabilia, said Guernsey’s owner and president, Arlan Ettinger.
Ettinger estimates that Elvis’ guitar, for which the performer's parents paid just $10, could fetch $300,000 to $400,000.
In a previous auction, Guernsey’s sold two Jerry Garcia guitars for $1 million each.
“One could imagine that this guitar is worth as much if not more than that,” Ettinger said. “You’ve got to marvel at this guitar.”
Acoustic guitar manufactured by Kay, purchased for Elvis Presley's 11th birthday. In January 1946, Elvis Presley accompanied his mother Gladys to Tupelo Hardware to select a gift for his 11th birthday. As this birthday approached, Elvis had been persistently pressing his parents for a .22 rifle, but Gladys and Vernon Presley had told him that they could not afford the 428 gun. At Tupelo hardware they were waited on by long-time salesman Forrest Bobo. An affidavit written by Bobo in 1979 recalls their visit:
"I remember well the afternoon when Elvis Presely and his mother came into the Tupelo Hardware, when I worked for twenty years. He wanted to buy a .22 rifle and his mother wanted him to buy a guitar. I showed him the rifle first and then I got the guitar for him to look at. I put a wood box behind the showcase and let him play the guitar for some

time. Then he said he did not have that much money, which was only $7.75 plus a 2% sales tax. His mother told him that if he would buy the guitar instead of the rifle, she would pay the difference for him. The small amount of money that he had to spend had been earned from running errands and doing small jobs for people."

Elvis Goes RIAA Diamond: Our friend Lee Dawson reports,, Thanks to the utter mess RCA left Elvis' record sales information statistics, the greatest artist the world has ever known has only just been certified his very first RIAA Diamond Award.
On Sept 09th, the Recording Industry Association of America [RIAA] certified 'Elvis' Christmas Album' the 1970 re-release of his 1957 album of the same name a Diamond Album after receiving over 10x Multi-Platinum Awards.
A source states that the 10x Multi-Platinum album has total sales of more than 13 Million copies sold to date.
The original 1957 release of 'Elvis' Christmas Album' is currently certified as 3x Multi-Platinum which was back in 1999. Also awarded Multi-Platinum in 1999 was 'Golden Records Vol 1' [6x], 'ELVIS 50 #1 Hits [5x] & 'Elvis' (Brookville) [5x]

Elvis' bass-man Norbert Putnam Interview: Celebrated Bassist Norbert Putnam worked for seven years with Elvis in the studio on over 120 songs. "Putt" was recently interviewed by Billy Watkins.
.. Elvis Presley strolled into RCA Studio B in Nashville on the evening of June 4, 1970, his attire accentuated by a black cape and matching cane.
"I was wondering," Elvis said to his musicians, a smile creasing his lips, "if you folks would like to make some phonograph records tonight?"
The room erupted in cheers.
That was Norbert Putnam's first glimpse of Elvis, who grew up in a shotgun shack in Tupelo and became known worldwide as the king of rock and roll. He died 34 years ago this month at age 42.
Putnam, 28 at the time, had built a reputation as a one of Nashville's top studio bass players. He laid down classic lines on such hits as Dave Loggins' Please Come to Boston and Joan Baez's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. But working with Elvis ... that was different.
"I was pretty worried," says Putnam, a former resident of Grenada who taught music for two years at Delta State. "I would always say a prayer before any session ... but that night I just said, 'Dear Lord, guide my fingers.' With anybody else I played with, I wanted them to leave saying 'This Putnam guy is the

greatest bass player I've ever seen.' With Elvis, I just didn't want to screw up."
Putnam says a recording session was "like an athletic event for Elvis." He explains: "He created so much adrenaline in the room. He would use a hand-held microphone so he could move around. He would sort of conduct us with his body. And he was totally courageous. He believed in himself so much. When that red light came on, he held nothing back. He went for it, which made you want to go for it, too. We fed off his energy."
And, yes, Elvis was eccentric. "About 1 a.m., a valet would bring him a complete change of clothes," Putnam remembers. "There were nights he did karate demonstrations for us that were absolutely amazing to watch."

UPDATED 'Fashion For A King' FTD in-depth Review: 'Fashion For A King' is an FTD co-produced Book/CD package, featuring a 512-page book written by Norwegians Tommy Edvardsen and Atle Larsen - it also includes 2 new live soundboards.
This is an almighty project, a coffee-table book including details and photos of all of Elvis’ stage outfits.
There is no doubt that Elvis collectors found the pre-publicity mouth-watering since it promised "a full documentary of all Elvis’ suits" and nothing of this magnitude has been done before - and certainly not with FTD as the official co-publisher.
The book assembles an astounding selection of images of Elvis from 1968 to 1977 from many notable photographic contributors including Ed Bonja, Keith Alveston, George O’Hill, Bob Heis and Sherrif Hannah.

Unlike EIN’s Piers Beagley and Geoffrey McDonnell, Bryan Gruszka is not an Elvis photo-book collector although he does admit to being a "jumpsuit aficionado"! EIN thought that any "jumpsuit aficionado" would be enamoured with the sumptuous book but for Bryan Gruszka this was not the case and his detailed review is worth considering. Elvis Leather Jacket from the 1960s on Ebay: "Exclusively designed for Elvis Presley" is what the label reads inside this black leather jacket. It's the first time we've actually seen an 'Elvis Presley' label. The jacket was designed by Fred Segal, who was one of Elvis's favorithe clothing designers in LA - and who also designed the stage costumes for the TCB Band. Joe Esposito authenticated the jacket, but the bidding starts at no less than US$30.000.

Lisa Marie, Elvis and Scientology's "Way To Happiness": Author and producer Skip Press recently wrote a rather off-beat story for the Morton Report. This is part of his story..
>> When I read in The Hollywood Reporter on August 31 that Elvis Presley Enterprises was suing Arista Music in Germany over ringtones derived from Presley’s back catalog of over 1,000 recordings, I found myself wondering just how much the Presleys were worth these days. Far more than when I knew them, I reasoned, but I thought of something else. I wondered if Lisa Marie Presley would ever be truly happy? After all, I never saw her smile.
In 1980, L. Ron Hubbard of Dianetics fame and Scientology infamy published a booklet entitled The Way to Happiness that listed 21 moral precepts. This booklet was all the rage among Scientologists (I happened to be one at the time).
One of my odd jobs in the late 1970s was answering “Elvis mail” for Priscilla Presley, a job I quit when I thought she wanted to date me. (I was an aspiring musician; who wanted to try to make it in Elvis’ shadow?) I’d met Lisa Marie at Priscilla’s house and liked her but I wondered why she always seemed to have a bit of a scowl on her face; some called it “her daddy’s pout.” She wasn’t smiling the day I watched the band rehearse, nor other times I saw her at Celebrity Centre. Maybe she smiled when she and Danny got married, but I wasn’t invited so I couldn’t tell you.
A couple of years later, I recorded a song of my own called “Poor Little Girl” and had in mind making a music video. I happened upon Lisa Marie one day in the courtyard at Celebrity Centre and asked if she would ever consider recording a song?
“No!” she barked in no uncertain terms.
“Well, hmm...” I thought for a second. “Would you ever be in a music video?” |

She paused, and blinked. I saw a hint of an upturned side of her mouth. I thought I was about to see the famous Presley smile. Finally, she said, “Maybe,” then went off to her Scientology class.
I wanted to reach out to Lisa Marie and tell her how Elvis had Scientology explained to him at a Scientology mission on Sunset Boulevard. Actress Peggy Lipton (whose brother, Kenny, I was on Celebrity Staff with) had taken him there. Priscilla told me Elvis had paid for Scientology “services” but never took them. In contrast, I read in the book Elvis Aron Presley: Revelations From The Memphis Mafia that, after emerging from the Scientology lecture, The King had said, "F*** those people! There's no way I'll ever get involved with that son-of-a-bitchin' group. All they want is my money." I knew it would be fruitless to talk to Priscilla about what I’d discovered and pieced together about Hubbard, none of it good, but maybe Lisa Marie would be different....

Elvis 1957 film find is genuine, but short and silent: Elvis was wearing his gold leaf suit coat. He whirled his arms like a windmill.
He danced with the microphone stand. Indeed, a film purported to be of Elvis Presley performing in a 1957 concert at Memorial Coliseum is what the label on the can claims: Elvis live, 54 years ago. (see news story below)
The film surfaced about two weeks ago when a woman who was planning to auction off her late husband’s huge collection of model trains pulled the old Elvis film out of the attic and suggested tossing it into the mix.
Rachael Stoeltje, film archivist, gave the old Elvis film a quick inspection and pronounced it in pretty good shape. It had shrunk by only 0.5 percent and it didn’t smell of vinegar, which means the film isn’t deteriorating.
But there are some disappointments. The film has no sound. It is just a silent film of the King doing his act before a huge Coliseum crowd, most of them armed with cameras with flashes.
The film was also shot far from the stage where Elvis swiveled his hips. When run at 16 frames per second, which is the normal speed, there is about 4 minutes of Elvis strutting on the stage, singing, dancing and posing for the fans. |

That’s not as much as auctioner Ellenberger hoped, but it’s a pretty good chunk of footage from Elvis’s early concert days. It never occurred to any of his managers or promoters to record any of his concerts themselves.
In reviewing the film, one of the school’s librarians speculated that the film might actually be a copy, which means there could be another film lurking out there somewhere, perhaps in a stack of additional film reels belonging to the deceased railroad collector.
For now, plans are for an auction, maybe in late October.

For this reason his performance is superb, still at the top if his ability he deliveries short shows, but very intense, there is a freshness that cannot be denied, Elvis was very energetic on stage, full of enthusiasm he sang with power and sensitivity, delivering a solid and heartfelt repertoire like the "new" songs "Spanish Eyes, Help me and Let Me Be There recent hit from Olivia Newton-John" and the classic "Trying to Get To You" sang terrifically. At the same time he introduce the oldie "My Baby Left me" without forget two classic early 70' songs like Release Me and Sweet Caroline and as you can see from the track list the number of the classic oldies in the show are significant reduced. This season will be the first with the new agreement, Elvis signed two years of contract performed twice a year, but only two weeks at the time rather than the previous four.

The sound is very good for an audience recording. We have on our hands the original mono tape of extremely good quality enabling us to carry out simple re-mastering work, concentrating on the reduction of noise trying to achieve a more clear sound and of Elvis, keeping his vocal power up in the central mix and at the same time trying to give a great definition to the background music.
From the third time from this label, this new CD will come in a deluxe DIGIPACK, containing a collection of live photographs from the Season. We add four tracks from the January 28, MS show as Bonus. In the way to give you a more complete view of the songs performed in the season, in spite a less audio quality of the tape.

Top 10 Most Expensive Elvis Presley clothes ever sold: To celebrate this anniversary of Elvis' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, the users of Wikicollecting.org have compiled a list of the most expensive items ever sold from the King's wardrobe.
A Harris poll conducted in 2002 suggested that ten percent of all Americans have visited Graceland, and nine percent Elvis memorabilia. He may be gone, but his legacy remains – and it seems we still all want a piece of The King to call our own. Here are their Top Ten below.
Unfortunately EIN realises that their list is totally incorrect. Elvis' Peacock suit sold for more than US$300,000 two years ago, ElvisMatters sold their Aqua -Blue Vine suit for $210,000 in 2008, the Burning Love suit sold for $107.000 over 10 years ago, the red cape for $40,000 and the Jack Lord belt for $66,000 just to name the well-known sales.
However the list is still pretty impressive, 34 years on and Elvis' wardrobe is stil ultimately desirable
EIN believes the Peacock Suit (right) is probably the highest seller of the known sales. Of course if Elvis’s two Aloha jumpsuits from his Hawaii concerts were ever sold by the Graceland museum, they could well exceed all these figures.
1. Elvis’s nail mirror jumpsuit - $175,000
A 1974 nail mirror jumpsuit worn by Elvis at a number of shows during 1973 and 1974 made $175,000 at a Regency-Superior auction in January 2006.
Elvis wore the suit at his largest ever concert, to 44,000 fans at the Houston Astrodome on March 3, 1974. (Shown below)

2. 1974 North Beach Leather suit - $120,000
A two piece bespoke custom leather suit, worn by Elvis at gigs at the Las Vegas Hilton during the summer of 1974, achieved $120,000 at Heritage Auctions in October 2008.
The cream suit, one of four very similar outfits produced by North Beach Leather for Elvis, features bloodstains from where he received B-12 vitamin shots before going on stage.
3. 1975 Dark Blue suit - $105,000
A dark blue International Costume suit, worn by Elvis at a number of concerts in 1975, sold for $105,000 at a Regency Superior sale in January 2006.
It comes complete with sweat stains courtesy of the King.
4. 1974 buff-colour North Beach leather suit - $47,000
A 1974 buff-colour North Beach leather stage-worn suit, worn by Elvis during 1974, made $47,000 at a Regency Superior sale in January 2006. The bell bottomed trousers feature an American football style fly, while the jacket includes sweat stains.
5. Mohair suit with Verde boots and scarf - $36,722
A stage worn International Costume Company mohair suit, with a scarf and Verde boots, was sold for $36,722 at a Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction in July 2011.
The garments were worn by Elvis during his long run at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, between 1969 and 1976.
Their list of clothing sold for less than $40,000 makes little sense as so much of Elvis' wardrobe has sold for more than that.

6. Promotional RCA photo red shirt - $28,000
A red shirt sported by Elvis in a giant pin up picture released by RCA in 1963, achieved $28,000 at a Leslie Hindman Auctioneers sale in October 2009.
7. Lanksy Bros suit and shirt - $25,725
A Lanksy Bros suit and shirt, which Elvis was pictured wearing on the back of the 1956 Elvis Presley album, produced by RCA, realised $25,725 at a Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction in July 2011.
8. 1950’s Lanksy Bros shirt, waistcoat and trousers - $13,798
A 1950’s Lanksy Bros shirt, waistcoat and trousers combination made $13,798. It is accompanied with publicity photographs showing Elvis in the get-up.
9. US army shirt - $5,069
A US army shirt worn by Elvis while on military service in Germany during the 1950’s achieved $5,069 in July 2011. It bears a stamp of his name on the inside, as well as a Spearhead squadron badge.
10. 1970’s purple robe - $5,445
A 1970’s Elvis-worn purple terrycloth robe, monogrammed with “EP”, sold for $5,445 at a Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction in July 2011.

'Young Man With The Big Beat', Goldmine review: Another rave review of the new 5-CD super deluxe set celebrating Elvis Presley's 1956 RCA debut. Goldmine Magazine has published a glowing critique of the set which includes RCA master recordings, live performances, outtakes and rare interviews.
Unfortunately there is no description or review of the deluxe book, nor the previously unreleased concert - we suspect they only received the promo CDs.
"The interviews are especially welcome" writes journalist Bruce Sylvester. "Elvis speaks admiringly of Frank Sinatra and recalls a cherished car. The boy from the housing projects is happy that his mother can now go into a store and buy whatever she wants. The human being emerging from the interview tapes seems like a pretty decent guy."

Ringo Starr says Elvis Presley Changed His Life: In a recent radio interview with the BBC, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr told the story how hearing Elvis Presley and other musicians changed his life. During the interview, he reflects back on the exact date he first heard Elvis, his first performance with the Beatles, the first records that inspired him, and much more. We begin our journey at the Kennedy Veteran Hospital where Elvis gets his first medical examinations to determine his draft status in January 1957. Of course, the well-known solemn promise scene and the "Operation Haircut" is included, too. There are private moments where Elvis can be seen with Anita Wood at Eddie Fadal's home. Be there when Elvis leaves the troop train to enter the U.S.S. Randall; see him arriving in Bremerhaven, Germany; Private Presley is the VIP on numerous press conferences and interviews e.g. with Dick Clark / American Bandstand. Experience Elvis on the grounds of the Ray Barracks or join the "King" during his trip to Paris, France. Unfortunately, Elvis was not home when Cliff Richard was visiting Goethestrasse 14 in Bad Nauheim, but the footage proves that he tried to say, 'hello'.
A special never before released clip shows the unveiling of the memorial bust which was installed in front of the, Hotel Grunewald" in Bad Nauheim to honor Elvis' stay in that city. This factory pressed DVD is a labour of love, compiled carefully to present the full story of Elvis and his military tour of duty. Elvis EU Copyright extended to 70 years: EU regulators are set to give the music industry a boost by extending copyright protection by 20 years. Recordings will now be under copyright for 70 years, making it illegal for anyone to distribute them without permission. This will stop the flood of low-quality EU and UK Public Domain releases
The EU council will rubber-stamp the changes on Monday, meaning member states will be required to write them into law within two years.
Recordings that were due to fall out of copyright protection over the next month, meaning anyone can package and resell the material, include Elvis Presley’s 1961 material like the smash "Little Sister" and anything before that.
EIN had no doubt that the power & money behind The Beatles would change the Public Domain laws before October 2012, 50 years after their first single release. |

The changes have been hailed as a victory for rights holders, who are desperate to protect their existing revenue streams in the face of intense pressure from illegal file-sharing.

New Elvis Movie Names Director: The King of Rock 'n' Roll is getting the big screen treatment. Writer-director John Scheinfeld has been tapped by RLF Victor Productions to direct Fame & Fortune, an adaptation of Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business, the 2007 biography by former Presley bodyguard Sonny West and biographer Marshall Terrill. Acclaimed writer/director John Scheinfeld has tackled many icons in his illustrious career, including numerous feature documentaries and retrospectives of John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, and Nat King Cole amongst others - but none perhaps as big as the first-ever feature film biopic on "The King of Rock 'n' Roll," Elvis Presley.
'Fame & Fortune' is slated for theatrical release in 2012 to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Presley's death.
"It is a great honor to direct the first feature film about Elvis, arguably the most influential, beloved and popular entertainer of the 20th century," Scheinfeld said. "I’m very excited to work with the RLF Victor team to bring this compelling and deeply emotional story to the big screen."

NOW UPDATED - 'Stage Rehearsal' FTD Review: Elvis' triumphant return to live performances was filmed by MGM in August 1970. The live footage in ‘That's The Way It Is’ was compiled from six concerts, filmed over four nights from the Opening Show on August 10th to the August 13th Dinner Show.
The new FTD focuses on the August 10th Dress Rehearsal for these all-important concerts - it also includes 6 Bonus Songs from 1972 & 1973.
EIN had high expectations of this great rehearsal, after all as a Fan Club Collectors’ release we pay good money to hear the real Elvis warts and all. However much of original spontaneity of Elvis' great performance has somehow been lost in the FTD production. On the other hand, there is no doubting that the remastered sound quality is fantastic and there are some real treats along the way especially with the Bonus Songs.

The Overton Park Shell 75th Anniversary: The Overton Park Shell, which is where Elvis gave his first paid concert on July 30th 1954, is set to hit a musical milestone by celebrating its 75th birthday later this year.
Closed for a few years due to inactivity, it was reopened in 2008 and is scheduled to hold numerous concerts this year and has already "hosted a concert during Elvis Week 2011 to celebrate Elvis Presley’s debut there in 1954."
To get an idea of how much history the memorable-looking venue has seen, Elvis wasn’t even the main act on the bill for that summer ’54 show at the shell, which was built for less than $12,000 in the 1930s by the city of Memphis and the Works Progress Administration.
"It’s a pretty monumental thing that this venue in Overton Park has been here for 75 years, and that’s only because of the support it receives from the community," said executive director Anne Pitts. "So that’s a real important message for us this year.

FTD Reprints and that 'Frankie & Johnny' Rumour: EIN cannot understand why the recent rumour about the FTD 'Frankie & Johnny' soundtrack reprint has caused so much interest with Elvis collectors (see news story below). Surely this is of minor importance compared to the up&coming '48 Hours To Memphis'? And if FTD need to reprint an old release, then surely they would use the Vic Anesini new Remasters?
Ernst Jørgensen kindly clarified the situation for us today and the question of future FTD reprints...
"Everytime we sell out of a product and have to reprint the title, we have a discussion on whether to improve the package or not. Currently we are (thinking of) reprinting about 11 titles, so we have 11 discussions. We will inform people through the proper channels when we are ready with these new releases and possible expanded/changed versions of titles.

However it's been interesting to read the sites since Elvis Australia (Troedson) started the rumour. The way I read them is that many fans think we are "greedy bastards" if we make some of the older releases into new 2 CD packages, and they will have to buy them again. I certainly understand the viewpoint, but I'm also sure there are people of other opinions.
The label is aimed at giving fans what they want - FTD's problem is to understand what the majority of the collectors want".

New documentary about TCB bass player Duke Bardwell: For most Elvis Presley fans, Duke Bardwell is something of an enigma...if they've heard of him at all. Searches on Elvis fan sites for Bardwell, who replaced Emory Gordy as bass player in Elvis' famed TCB Band in 1974, reveal either a belief that Bardwell's playing resulted in his release from the band in 1975 or loose theories and mumblings about a rift between the musician and his famous boss. A search on the official Elvis Presley Enterprises site returns no results at all. Zero.
So how did a man who played more than 180 shows with Elvis simply disappear from the official history?
Why has he rarely been seen by Elvis fans in intervening years and never at EPE events? And what exactly was the reason for his sudden dismissal in April 1975?

Remains of missing Elvis figure found: The Summerside Police Service in Canada's Prince Edward Island has found one of two Elvis depictions stolen this week from a city home. Police recovered a burning Elvis figure behind Elm Street Elementary School Thursday afternoon, said Sgt. Barry Arsenault.
At 2 p.m. they responded to a call from the janitorial staff of Elm Street school reporting a burning scarecrow behind the building in the playground area.
Upon arriving at the scene, police recovered the charred remains of what they suspected to be the Elvis manican that went missing from Pat Doucette’s home on Palmer St.
Friday morning, blue suede shoes and a wig were recovered in the grass and surrounding area.
Summerside police are in the process of obtaining the video footage from the school’s outdoor cameras to assist in their investigation.

'Young Man With The Big Beat' First Review: A mini review of this deluxe boxset from Atlas Jams online magazine "A World Of Musical Adventures" that just launched their first issue. The magazine includes this review of the new Elvis boxset.
'Young Man With The Big Beat' - The Complete 1956 Elvis Presley Masters is due for release September 27. That was the year Presley went from being a hick rockabilly singer to being the King of Rock'n'Roll. The great thing about it is that the "hick" inside the boy (he was 21) was still endearingly alive. These five discs brilliantly show the maturation process. Disc #1 has the 12 songs of his self-titled debut LP and EP plus the five singles that were not on either. Disc #2 has the 12 songs from his second album, "Elvis", his second EP, plus the non-album singles. To hear again in proper historical context what Presley did naturally to material by Big Joe Turner ("Shake Rattle & Roll"), Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes"), Ray Charles ("I Got A Woman"), Little Richard ("Tutti Frutti") and Rodgers & Hart's 1934 "Blue Moon" is to realize the extent of his interpretive genius. And how much more self-assured he sounds on Disc #2! It's like night and day. |

Much more revealing is the infamous performance captured here from the New Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. Four songs. And he bombs. He's obviously uncomfortable, cracking corny jokes like the hillbilly he must have seemed like to a Vegas crowd. His need to feel part of the show business tradition is palpable, exemplified when he stops the shoes introduce Phil Silvers and Ray Bolger in the audience. They both get polite applause. "And Roy Acuff," he says of the Grand Ole Opry star, "he's here too." And, of course, nobody knows who the hell Roy Acuff is and there's an awkward silence where applause should be.
Disc #3 starts with this performance and it's fascinating. It's juxtaposed with a show just 10 days later in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Elvis is back in command and the girls go crazy. Although the audio is inundated with the screams, Disc #3 is less a musical experience than a sociological one. You strain to hear Presley’s between-song banter for a clue as to what must have been going through his mind upon the realization of the power he held over the gushing, screaming, crying women.
Disc #4 is similarly fascinating but in a different way. Here, you hear the studio out-takes and the effect is mesmerizing, almost hypnotic: 11 different takes in a row of 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ followed by 12 different takes in a row of ‘Shake Rattle & Roll’. When the dust clears, you feel like you've been at a very hectic band practice.
Disc #5 is the most fascinating of them all. Here, the 21-year old tries (and fails) to make some sense of what he's going through in a series of interviews. He's honest to a fault, as he belonged to the generation of entertainers who didn't yet know how to play with the press like the Beatles and Dylan would a decade later.

EIN Spotlight on Alfred Wertheimer: Photographer Alfred Wertheimer was a special guest at this year's Elvis Week "Conversations On Elvis". Wertheimer described a few of those moments he spent with Elvis back in 1956 to the crowd but of course the main topic of discussion was the recent discovery and confirmation of the woman belonging to the famous "Elvis Kiss" photograph.
It is incredible to learn that over seven days in 1956 Wertheimer shot over 3,500 photographs of Elvis in the months of March, June, and July in the unbelievable year that "the Memphis Flash" became the iconic "Elvis the Pelvis".
Back in 2009 Vanity Fair contributor Bob Colacello wrote a fascinating and detailed article about Alfred Wertheimer which goes on to explain far more about how Wertheimer and Elvis interacted to get those iconic images - "The First of Elvis".

James Burton at Vancouver Elvis show: When the Vancouver Pacific National Exhibition's fifth annual Elvis show kicks off Wednesday night, fans of the King can get up close and personal with one of the greatest guitarists in rock ‘n’ roll history.
James Burton, who played lead guitar during Elvis Presley’s later years, will get on stage for several classics and said he would later meet with fans.
“As the years go by, how many people are still around that were connected as much as he was with Elvis?” said Vancouver’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll DJ Red Robinson, who will MC the night and chat with Burton about his time with Presley. “The man is a living legend himself.”
In a phone call, Burton, who has been admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is idolized by the likes of Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, only wanted to talk about his legendary bandmate.
“Elvis called me in 1969 and asked me to put a band together, which I did and we played together for nine years until he died,” Burton said. “He’s an incredible icon, he’s a blessing to the music world and all his wonderful fans.” |

After the PNE, the 72-year-old will go to Los Angeles for a star-studded Buddy Holly Walk of Fame ceremony.
He said that at the PNE, he’ll play several songs spanning Elvis’s career, such as Mystery Train and Burning Love.
“We want to give them some good music,” Burton said. “They want me to do some of my favourite stuff I like.”
Burton will be backed by dozens of musicians, but has a policy of not performing alongside Elvis impersonators.

New Film Of 1957 Elvis Fort Wayne Concert Discovered: A little more than 54 years ago Elvis Presley performed at Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum. The Ellenberger Brothers auction company in northeast Indiana has been “all shook up” over a piece of history that dates back to Elvis Presley’s 1957 performance at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The business was preparing for a large auction of model toy trains to hit the block Sept. 10 when an unrelated item was brought to its attention.
The woman who will have the auction offered a small tin can to the company in addition to the trains. On top, a small piece of tape reading “Elvis 1957 Colesium,” inside the tin protected a film reel of the King’s appearance.
“Rarely do you ever see anything like this but this is just maybe a once in a lifetime thing,” auctioneer Glenn Ellenberger said. “It appears to be the full concert.” |

The auctioneer said his curiosity encouraged a peek at the strip frame by frame sitting at his kitchen table.
“I couldn’t help but pull it open and look at the first few feet of it,” Ellenberger said. “I can see the coliseum. I can see people in the seats in front of it and I can see someone on the stage who I’m sure is Elvis.”
The young rock star was just 22 when he spent about 30 minutes on the coliseum stage. Few artifacts are known to exist in the area from the visit, including a couple newspaper articles seen in the microfilm archives of the Allen County Library.
The film will be on sale in an online auction, the date for which has not been determined.

EPE Pursuing Legal Action Against RCA Germany: EPE, Inc. and the Calunius Litigation Risk Fund announced today developments in a multi-million Euro lawsuit against Arista Music, formerly RCA Records, in Germany. The suit, which was filed in the name of its sister company Elvis Presley Enterprises, LLC in December 2010, is demanding proper payment for sound recordings in Germany featuring Elvis Presley including new media, like downloads, ringtones and entertainment apps that Presley himself could not have dreamed would someday exist. The suit is only applicable to sound recordings in Germany and is limited to amounts earned since March 2002 and future revenue until 2023 following an amendment to German copyright law that extended the term of copyright protection.
The suit alleges that Presley was unjustly exploited during his lifetime by the record company and that his estate has continued to suffer from those injustices.
The central issue, as it relates to this German suit, is the 1973 buyout

agreement, which terminated all previous agreements between Presley and RCA. On February 28, 1973, under the agreement, which was first initiated by RCA and arranged by Presley’s manager, “Colonel” Tom Parker, rights to Presley’s entire back catalogue of more than 1,000 recordings were purchased by RCA for just $5.4 million. That money, inadequate as it was, had to be split equally between Presley and Parker. The suit alleges that the effect of the buyout agreement was that Presley only received an annual payment of about $10 - $15 per song for the German rights.
EPE claims the amount of money he received from the buyout agreement with RCA was “conspicuously disproportionate” to the revenue received by RCA from its exploitation of Elvis Presley master recordings, during the extended portion of the copyright term in Germany. The claim asks for the remedy under German copyright law of "equitable remuneration" which is available in circumstances like this.
“We have conducted a rigorous examination of the merits and quantum of this case, working closely with the plaintiffs,” said Christian Stuerwald, the Calunius partner with responsibility for this investment. “Together we have come to the conclusion that this case will win in the German Courts. We are particularly proud to be supporting such a clear and meritorious case in the historic interests of the greatest recording artist in history.”

Jerry Leiber Interview for EIN: Jerry Leiber along with partner Mike Stoller composed hit songs for many artists, beginning in 1952. After Elvis recorded their Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog" their lives changed. dramatically. The key Leiber / Stoller compositions that Elvis recorded are "Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock", "Baby, I Don't Care", “Don't", "Loving You", "Santa Claus Is Back in Town", "King Creole", "Love Me", "Treat Me Nice" and "Trouble".
Mike Stoller appeared with Elvis in the 1957 movie Jailhouse Rock, playing piano for Vince Everett's (Elvis') band. This was due to a strange twist of fate since it was actually Jerry Leiber who had been chosen for the part.
In 2006 Ken Sharp interviewed Jerry Leiber (right with Elvis) and Mike Stoller as part of his impressive FTD book about Elvis’ composers, ‘Writing For the King.’

Rock'n'roll songwriter Jerry Leiber dead at 78: Jerry Leiber, one of the most important songwriters in the history of rock & roll – whose 60-year partnership with Mike Stoller produced "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Loving You", "On Broadway," "Yakety-Yak", "Stand By Me"and countless other classics – has died of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78.
His death was confirmed Monday by his longtime publicist, Bobbi Marcus.
With Leiber as lyricist (bottom right) and Stoller as composer, the team channeled their blues and jazz backgrounds into pop songs performed by such artists as Elvis Presley, Dion and the Belmonts, the Coasters, the Drifters and Ben E. King in a way that would help create a joyous new musical style.
From their breakout hit, blues great Big Mama Thornton's 1953 rendition of "Hound Dog," until their songwriting took a more serious turn in 1969 with Peggy Lee's recording of "Is That All There Is?" the pair remained one of the most successful teams in pop music history.
Their writing prowess and influence over the recording industry as pioneering independent producers earned them induction into the non-performer category of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
"The music world lost today one of its greatest poet laureates," said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "Jerry not only wrote the words that everyone was singing, he led the way in how we verbalized

our feelings about the societal changes we were living with in post-World War II life. Appropriately, his vehicles of choice were the emerging populist musical genres of rhythm and blues and then rock and roll."
Over their career, they had 15 No. 1 hits in a variety of genres by 10 different artists. They were instrumental in helping launch Presley's career with such songs as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock."
In the 1990s their songs became the centerpiece of a long-running Broadway revue, "Smokey Joe's Cafe," which won a Grammy for best musical show album in 1996.
"Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller have written some of the most spirited and enduring rock 'n' roll songs," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said in a statement released at the time of their induction.
Leiber was born in Baltimore in 1933; his parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. He met Stoller after moving to Los Angeles with his mother in 1950.

FTDs Frankie And Johnny Soundtrack CD - NO Re-release planned as yet: According to Elvis Australia, and reported elsewhere, the FTD Frankie and Johnny Soundtrack CD will be re-released when FTD 'have made the neccessary corrections'. When contacted, Ernst Jorgensen at FTD said that, NO announcement about this release had been made. He had no idea where this rumour came from.
EIN remembers that the original LP Masters always sounded shockingly bad and would be improved if replaced by the Vic Anesini 2007 remasters. The extra outakes always sounded fine in comparison
