New Film Of 1957 Elvis Fort Wayne Concert Discovered: A little more than 54 years ago Elvis Presley performed at Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum. The Ellenberger Brothers auction company in northeast Indiana has been “all shook up” over a piece of history that dates back to Elvis Presley’s 1957 performance at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The business was preparing for a large auction of model toy trains to hit the block Sept. 10 when an unrelated item was brought to its attention.
The woman who will have the auction offered a small tin can to the company in addition to the trains. On top, a small piece of tape reading “Elvis 1957 Colesium,” inside the tin protected a film reel of the King’s appearance.
“Rarely do you ever see anything like this but this is just maybe a once in a lifetime thing,” auctioneer Glenn Ellenberger said. “It appears to be the full concert.” |

The auctioneer said his curiosity encouraged a peek at the strip frame by frame sitting at his kitchen table.
“I couldn’t help but pull it open and look at the first few feet of it,” Ellenberger said. “I can see the coliseum. I can see people in the seats in front of it and I can see someone on the stage who I’m sure is Elvis.”
The young rock star was just 22 when he spent about 30 minutes on the coliseum stage. Few artifacts are known to exist in the area from the visit, including a couple newspaper articles seen in the microfilm archives of the Allen County Library.
The film will be on sale in an online auction, the date for which has not been determined.

EPE Pursuing Legal Action Against RCA Germany: EPE, Inc. and the Calunius Litigation Risk Fund announced today developments in a multi-million Euro lawsuit against Arista Music, formerly RCA Records, in Germany. The suit, which was filed in the name of its sister company Elvis Presley Enterprises, LLC in December 2010, is demanding proper payment for sound recordings in Germany featuring Elvis Presley including new media, like downloads, ringtones and entertainment apps that Presley himself could not have dreamed would someday exist. The suit is only applicable to sound recordings in Germany and is limited to amounts earned since March 2002 and future revenue until 2023 following an amendment to German copyright law that extended the term of copyright protection.
The suit alleges that Presley was unjustly exploited during his lifetime by the record company and that his estate has continued to suffer from those injustices.
The central issue, as it relates to this German suit, is the 1973 buyout

agreement, which terminated all previous agreements between Presley and RCA. On February 28, 1973, under the agreement, which was first initiated by RCA and arranged by Presley’s manager, “Colonel” Tom Parker, rights to Presley’s entire back catalogue of more than 1,000 recordings were purchased by RCA for just $5.4 million. That money, inadequate as it was, had to be split equally between Presley and Parker. The suit alleges that the effect of the buyout agreement was that Presley only received an annual payment of about $10 - $15 per song for the German rights.
EPE claims the amount of money he received from the buyout agreement with RCA was “conspicuously disproportionate” to the revenue received by RCA from its exploitation of Elvis Presley master recordings, during the extended portion of the copyright term in Germany. The claim asks for the remedy under German copyright law of "equitable remuneration" which is available in circumstances like this.
“We have conducted a rigorous examination of the merits and quantum of this case, working closely with the plaintiffs,” said Christian Stuerwald, the Calunius partner with responsibility for this investment. “Together we have come to the conclusion that this case will win in the German Courts. We are particularly proud to be supporting such a clear and meritorious case in the historic interests of the greatest recording artist in history.”

'Under The Midnight Sun' new Import CD: The Showroom import label's up-coming release is 'Under The Midnight Sun' featuring an audience recording from the midnight show from January 28 1973 as recorded at the Hilton Hotel Las Vegas.
This concert has previously been released on CDR and was not of good quality so EIN sees little reason to "Watch the Skies" unless an exceptional soundboard has been found!
The possible excitement is that Elvis sang All Shook Up that night - a song he only sang 4 times in all of 1973.

Elvis Alive Drive!: This strange story notes that "Elvis is alive!" at least according to the Las Vegas map book.
Not every street name has to be boring (Eastern Avenue) or named for a hotel (Sahara Avenue). Some make a statement, such as Elvis Alive Drive - which is a genuine street off Kyle Canyon Road, Las Vegas.
It turns out lots of streets in the Las Vegas Valley are named for interesting people, and some streets have noteworthy stories behind them.
Las Vegas accountant Josh Elliott is pushing to change Industrial Road between Twain and Sahara avenues to Sammy Davis Jr. Parkway, creating an intersection near the Strip where Davis would be united with Rat Pack buddies Frank Sinatra (Drive) and Dean Martin (Drive).
The proposal has been approved by the Winchester Town Advisory Board and is to be discussed tonight by the Paradise Town Advisory Board before going to the planning commission and the county commission.

Elvis' granddaughter Riley to star in 'Magic Mike' Movie: Elvis Presley's granddaughter has beaten out Lindsay Lohan to play the leading lady role in 'Magic Mike'. According to sources, Riley Keough has been cast as the exotic dancer girlfriend of British actor Alex Pettyfer in Steven Soderbergh's movie about male strippers.
"Her character is trouble with a capital T," quoted a production source as saying.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Matthew McConaughey will be playing a stripper-turned-club owner in the movie, shooting for which is due to begin this autumn in Tampa, Florida.

New 'Heartbreak Hotel' For 2012?: An Elvis fan from Memphis reports that two city council members have confirmed that EPE is making preparations to build a new lavish Heartbreak Hotel near to the mansion. It won't be directly next door, but about 400 yards or so northward, at the site of the old Meadows apartment complex that is now demolished and boarded off by a huge iron fence.
He reports that groundbreaking probably won't happen this year but will most likely begin in 2012. It's going to be an Elvis-themed luxury hotel with conference and meeting space. Much nicer and bigger than the current one. Hopefully the swimming pool will be bigger than the current one!

FTDs Frankie And Johnny Soundtrack CD - NO Re-release planned as yet: According to Elvis Australia, and reported elsewhere, the FTD Frankie and Johnny Soundtrack CD will be re-released when FTD 'have made the neccessary corrections'. When contacted, Ernst Jorgensen at FTD said that, NO announcement about this release had been made. He had no idea where this rumour came from.
EIN remembers that the original LP Masters always sounded shockingly bad and would be improved if replaced by the Vic Anesini 2007 remasters. The extra outakes always sounded fine in comparison

"Elvis & Priscilla: The Wedding" Calendar: EPE names this as a keepsake item for Elvis fans and collectors alike! To celebrate the 45th wedding anniversary between the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Priscilla Presley, EPE will soon release “Elvis & Priscilla: The Wedding,” a 16-month calendar for 2012. Priscilla hand-picked this unique collection of wedding photos and provided all of the personal commentary to describe what was happening in each image.
Elvis and Priscilla were married on May 1, 1967 in a private ceremony at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. "One thing I loved throughout the years was Elvis’ silent gestures" writes Priscilla. "He had a manly image to maintain, but his assuring subtle squeeze of the hand, the strength of his touch, and the occasional wink would send me an unspoken message.”
EIN Note - One wonders how sincere this "45th wedding anniversary" can really be, knowing that Priscilla left Elvis for another man - and then divorced Elvis in October 1973. Perhaps this is yet another EPE cash-in?

'Unedited Masters - Stax 1973' New Venus CD: Out now from Venus Productions is a new CD in great sound quality. The first fourteen tracks feature mostly unedited overdub masters and some undubbed masters, all recorded during the famous Stax 1973 sessions. One of the highlight is definitely the complete unedited master of ''Promised Land'' with vocal harmony by Elvis himself, and partly used in the movie and on the album ''This Is Elvis''.
The eleven bonus tracks were all recorded after the Aloha Special for inclusion during the Special shown later that year in the USA. It features several takes of some of the performances, and dialogues between Elvis, the producer and his musicians.
We are again able to present all these tracks in our usual ''out of space'' sound quality. As always there are no fade-ins, no fade-outs and all recordings were left as there were recorded.

“Vegas Variety- Volume 6” new Import CD: Rainbow Records is about to release a sixth volume of their "VEGAS VARIETY" series. The producers obtained a good-sounding 1974 audience tape of Elvis' August 24 1974 Dinner Show, and extra effort has been devoted to sound enhancement of this source. There is no need to go into detail here, Elvis' appearances in the summer of '74 were musically strong, with a lot of fresh songs added to the set list.
“Vegas Variety- Volume 6” is presented with a 20-page, deluxe booklet featuring several rare photos and liner notes. If you are a fan of solid-sounding, interesting audience recordings, you will adore this new Rainbow Records release.

'Baltimore Nightfall' - new 1977 Memory CD: A double CD release which hails from Elvis’ uneven May/June 1977 tour. After a few lethargic concerts at the start, Elvis offered some decent performances in Augusta, Rochester and Binghamton. Philadelphia on May 28th was problematic, and the next evening in Baltimore May 29th 1977 the King left the stage halfway through. No one was quite sure if he would return to finish the set. Talk about Hell… Luckily, Elvis reappeared twenty minutes later, singing with power and trying to compensate for the unexpected break with extra effort, including knockout versions of Hurt, Help Me and Unchained Melody.
This recording was taken directly from a first-generation copy of the original audience tape. A previous release in 1994 on the Groti label was incomplete, and it ran at the wrong speed. This new Memory CD uses a different source tape, is 100% uncut and much better sounding. All photographs are from Baltimore on May 29th.

'Midnight Resurrection At The International' - new Memory CD: The August 25, 1969 Midnight Show, International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. This is a typically excellent 1969 set. Among the highlights are Jailhouse Rock, Mystery Train and All Shook Up. Of course, contemporary material is included – strong covers of Words, Yesterday and I Can’t Stop Loving You, plus terrific renditions of Elvis’ recent recordings, In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds. It’s Elvis in 1969, so don’t expect even a single average performance!
This recording is taken from an early generation copy of the original tape. The sound quality is very good for a 42 year-old audience recording. The CD booklet contains a collection of August 1969 photos and liner notes.

'Come On Everybody' New bootleg: The 1971 'Come On Everybody' Camden LP was never released by Sony on CD. Now the bootleggers step in. The 'classic' will be released in a full color glossy three panel digipack with the original tracks (all taken from the latest brilliant Vic Anesini masters) and five additional bonus tracks and two unreleased versions of songs from the album (both are actually released on the FTD label). This release is limited to 500 copies.

Jerry Leiber Interview for EIN: Jerry Leiber along with partner Mike Stoller composed hit songs for many artists, beginning in 1952. After Elvis recorded their Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog" their lives changed. dramatically. The key Leiber / Stoller compositions that Elvis recorded are "Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock", "Baby, I Don't Care", “Don't", "Loving You", "Santa Claus Is Back in Town", "King Creole", "Love Me", "Treat Me Nice" and "Trouble".
Mike Stoller appeared with Elvis in the 1957 movie Jailhouse Rock, playing piano for Vince Everett's (Elvis') band. This was due to a strange twist of fate since it was actually Jerry Leiber who had been chosen for the part.
In 2006 Ken Sharp interviewed Jerry Leiber (right with Elvis) and Mike Stoller as part of his impressive FTD book about Elvis’ composers, ‘Writing For the King.’

Rock'n'roll songwriter Jerry Leiber dead at 78: Jerry Leiber, one of the most important songwriters in the history of rock & roll – whose 60-year partnership with Mike Stoller produced "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Loving You", "On Broadway," "Yakety-Yak", "Stand By Me"and countless other classics – has died of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78.
His death was confirmed Monday by his longtime publicist, Bobbi Marcus.
With Leiber as lyricist (bottom right) and Stoller as composer, the team channeled their blues and jazz backgrounds into pop songs performed by such artists as Elvis Presley, Dion and the Belmonts, the Coasters, the Drifters and Ben E. King in a way that would help create a joyous new musical style.
From their breakout hit, blues great Big Mama Thornton's 1953 rendition of "Hound Dog," until their songwriting took a more serious turn in 1969 with Peggy Lee's recording of "Is That All There Is?" the pair remained one of the most successful teams in pop music history.
Their writing prowess and influence over the recording industry as pioneering independent producers earned them induction into the non-performer category of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
"The music world lost today one of its greatest poet laureates," said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "Jerry not only wrote the words that everyone was singing, he led the way in how we verbalized

our feelings about the societal changes we were living with in post-World War II life. Appropriately, his vehicles of choice were the emerging populist musical genres of rhythm and blues and then rock and roll."
Over their career, they had 15 No. 1 hits in a variety of genres by 10 different artists. They were instrumental in helping launch Presley's career with such songs as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock."
In the 1990s their songs became the centerpiece of a long-running Broadway revue, "Smokey Joe's Cafe," which won a Grammy for best musical show album in 1996.
"Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller have written some of the most spirited and enduring rock 'n' roll songs," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said in a statement released at the time of their induction.
Leiber was born in Baltimore in 1933; his parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. He met Stoller after moving to Los Angeles with his mother in 1950.

'Atlanta Bound' - new 1976 Import: In a few days, Straight Arrow will release a new CD called 'Atlanta Bound' (SA 2011-21-02). It will feature Elvis' Friday, June 4, 1976, at the Omni Coliseum, Atlanta, GA.
Compared with many other mid-1976 concert recordings, this one is very enjoyable. It seems that Elvis was "on fire" when he played Southern states, no matter if it was 1970 or 1976. His three dates at the Omni Coliseum were special ones and Elvis tried hard to please a very appreciative audience. On this CD, Straight Arrow is presenting the first concert, as both June 5 and 6 have already been released by other labels.
Elvis hit the Omni stage in a good mood and a strong voice. As usual, the highlights are not only ballad performances like "You Gave Me A Mountain", a double "Hurt" or even the country gospel of "Help Me" but also rockers like "Polk Salad Annie", "Burning Love" and "Jailhouse Rock". Near the end of show, Elvis takes an audience request and belts out one of his best versions of "that silly song", "Little Darlin'".

'Down At The End Of Paradise Road' another Straight Arrow CD: The second summer '11 release from Straight Arrow (SA 2011-22-02) will be the previously-unreleased August 30, 1973 Midnight Show in Las Vegas.
Most of Elvis' August-September 1973 shows were solid (especially when compared with February 1973) and this night is no exception. The show is somewhat unusual. Usually, every time daughter Lisa Marie was in attendance, Elvis would drop the emotional ballad "My Boy" from the set list, and replace it with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". In this show, however, both songs are performed.
This live recording is taken from the flip side of an original 120-minute cassette tape. The A-side, containing the dinner show that same evening, was released by Straight Arrow in 2010 as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". The sound quality here is very good, considering it was taped from the audience. All photographs are from the August-September 1973 Hilton engagement, and the liner notes are written by the super-fan who quietly recorded the show!

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" shifted things from sexy back to serious, with Elvis reprising the finale from the verse "Sail on, silver girl". It was pleasing to see how his mood had changed quite dramatically from that evening's first performance. At the dinner show Elvis had fooled around and chatted quite a lot. Now, he put on a much tighter performance, although both shows were enjoyable in different ways.There was an exchange with Bill Porter in the sound booth about his microphone; there'd been sound problems at the first show, and Elvis changed microphones before doing "An American Trilogy". During the quieter part he added, "All my trials, Lord - thank goodness - soon be over". Was this a reference to his upcoming divorce, problems with Colonel Parker, or simply that he was annoyed, and was glad his summer season was almost completed?"If we've done anything to make you happy, then we feel we've done our job", said the King, as he moved into "Can't Help Falling In Love" and completed a very satisfying performance. Many British fans, who'd arrived in Vegas earlier that day, must have been thrilled to discover their hero in such good form".

Scottish Elvis fan body identified - suspected suicide at Elvis Week: Memphis police have identified the body found in a Downtown condo Monday as that of missing Scottish tourist Gerrie Lawrie, 41, and believe her death may have been the result of a suicide.
Gerrie Lawrie, (right) an Elvis fan visiting Memphis for the annual "Death Week" remembrance, was reported missing after she didn't arrive home in Aberdeen, Scotland, as scheduled.
At about 11 a.m. Monday, Memphis police found a woman's body at 612 Denmark, the condo Lawrie was renting. Police said there were no obvious signs of foul play, but that the investigation is ongoing. She has now been identified.
However, a neighbor who talked to several residents who live near the condo questioned that determination.
"(Neighbors) said Saturday night and Sunday night, it was such screaming," Darlene Barclay said. "There were three or four neighbors that heard screaming come out of that place. They heard that and no one did anything about it."
Former Shelby County Sheriff Gene Barksdale first alerted Memphis police on Saturday following a call from Scotland.

Downtown parking garage Aug. 15, the night of the candlelight vigil outside Graceland.
Barksdale, whose decade as sheriff included Elvis' death on Aug. 16, 1977, said he met Lawrie a few years ago at a fan meeting where Elvis took karate lessons.
John Helms, a Memphis artist who said he met Lawrie through Barksdale and helped host her during visits, said she arrived Aug. 9 for her sixth visit to Memphis.
He described Lawrie as an outgoing world traveler, adding that "she wanted to move here real bad."

Ernst Jørgensen SUN book for April 2012 release?: At Conversations on Elvis this week in Memphis, Ernst Jørgensen talked about the progress his long-awaited deluxe SUN Book/CD set. He noted that it could be "technically finished" by the end of 2011. Their "ambition" is to have it out in April 2012. The proofreading has been done, but there were still improvements being made to some of the rougher recordings. Jørgensen added that though the ongoing delay is unfortunate, the good news is that during the recent additional work, he's found another new 25 photos to consider for the project.

'Four Days in 56' - Another FTD Book!: 'Four Days in 56: A Moment In Time' is the newly announced FTD Book (only, no CD) by "Return To Tupelo" producer Michael Rose which chronicles the four days from early 1956 as Elvis barnstorms from Detroit through Columbus, and finally back to Memphis and his new home at Audubon Drive - May 25 28th 1956..
In Memphis for Elvis Week Ernst Jorgenson said that it is 200 page/200 photo book that is being
produced as a companion release to the Sony/Legacy 5CD box set, "Young Man With The Big Beat".
Michael Rose has been working with Ernst Jorgenson for the last 12 months hunting down contacts and stories. EIN published their request for information and stories - for the Detriot News - back in January this year.

EPE To re-Enact Elvis Meeting Nixon For 35th Anniversary?: EIN contributor Brian Quinn reports that a couple of nights back on Elvis Radio, George Klein was talking to Jerry Schilling on the phone. Jerry mentioned that they are going to do a re-enactment of Elvis meeting President Nixon for the 35th Anniversary Elvis Week.
The topic came up as Jerry and GK were reminiscing about the 30th Anniversary and the Google Earth opening of 'Elvis In Concert' when Elvis Joe and the guys landed at Graceland in the helicopter. It was in this context that Jerry said they were thinking about doing the re-enactment of Elvis meeting Nixon.
... The mind boggles as to how and where this would take place.

Montgomery Coliseum to Stay Open for Now: A newly formed public-private partnership may be the medicine needed to keep the doors open to a 60-year-old Montgomery arena that has hosted such acts as Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Elton John, Bob Hope and Aretha Franklin. Alabama Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said Wednesday the state, city, Montgomery County and the Kiwanis Club now had an agreement to keep Garrett Coliseum open beyond Oct. 1. That's when state funding to operate the facility was to run out. Elvis performed at the Montgomery Coliseum on March 6 1974 the "On Stage In Memphis" tour as well as February 16 1977.

Work has begun on new Elvis Center in Tupelo: One of the reasons why fans from all parts of the world are so fond of the Birthplace in Tupelo, is the rather 'uncommercial' approach. A small chapel, a small museum, a small house and a small gift shop: that's about it. However, times they are a-changing and construction work on a new 3.5 million $US Convention and Elvis/Visitors Center has begun. This picture taken a few hours ago, shows the North side of the Birth Place. If all goes according to schedule, phase 1 of the development plan should be ready by Elvis Week 2012.

Michele Bachmann's Presley Anniversary gaffe: Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann got her Elvis Presley dates confused during a campaign stop in South Carolina. The congresswoman from Minnesota told the crowd of 300 that she wanted to say "happy birthday" to the king of rock-and-roll.
"Before we get started, let's all say happy birthday to Elvis Presley today" Bachmann said.
But 16 August is the anniversary of Elvis's death, in 1977, not his birth 8 January 1935, causing a person in the crowd to shout back, "He died today."
Ms Bachmann did not respond and merely launched into her speech, although she did correct herself later as she spoke with reporters, noting the date marked Presley's passing, not his birth.
Ms Bachmann already has a reputation for notable mistakes.

- 108 Hot 100 hits, the most among solo artists in the chart's history (Elvis' career even predates the Hot 100's 1958 inception). The King's 104th charted title, "Way Down," originally peaked at No. 31 the weeks of Aug. 6 and 13, 1977. After dipping to No. 53, following Presley's death, the song roared 35-24-21-18, marking his last top 20 track.
- 80 top 40 Hot 100 hits, the most such showings in the tally's archives. Elton John ranks second with 57. On the first Hot 100, dated Aug. 4, 1958, Presley ranked at No. 4 with "Hard Headed Woman" and at No. 34 with "Don't Ask Me Why," each featuring his longtime gospel backing band, the Jordanaires.
- 122 Billboard 200 charted albums, the highest total in the chart's 55-year history. Ten of those sets reached No. 1, beginning with "Elvis Presley," which ruled for 10 weeks in 1956. His most recent reign came courtesy of "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits" in 2002. Presley last appeared on the survey when "Elvis Is Back!" spent a week at No. 199 on the March 26, 2011, chart.

This next LIVE release will feature a previously unknown multi-track recording of Elvis' Richmond show, March 18 1974. Taken from a tape copy (2 channels mix-down) of a 16-track recording, the show is complete (with some tape damage that has been fixed/altered). It has been mastered by Vic Anesini!
This recording was made 2 days before 'Recorded live on stage in Memphis'. It’s an unbelievable discovery: The recording 48 hours to Memphis came from a newly discovered, unmarked tape which later appeared to be a copy of the 16-track recording machine.

Elvis' King James Bible On Display in Washington DC: Elvis Presley's copy of the "King James" Bible will be on display at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. as a part of the new "Manifold Greatness" exhibition.
The word of God was a very important part of Elvis' life, as he often looked to religious writings as a source of inspiration. Elvis always kept a copy of the Bible near him, and sometimes gave dramatic Bible readings to his family and friends. In the 1970's, he studied various religions and philosophies, seeking answers to questions about why God had chosen him to become so famous.

Dear Friends:
Thank you so much for being here and continuing to honor the legacy of my father. Your ongoing love and support mean very much to me and my family. My father always said he had the best fans in the world, and he was right. The fact that you are here to celebrate his life 34 years after his passing is a testament to that.
I hope you've enjoyed our new exhibits at Graceland and I look forward to being involved personally with a very special exhibit called "Elvis Through His Daughter's Eyes" opening in the Spring of next year.
Before we know it, it will be Elvis Week 2012, which as you all know as the 35th anniversary will be special time. I look forward to being there with you, my mother and entire family.
Thank you all and I'll see you next August.

AUGUST 14-15, 1958; At approximately 3:15am, with her husband by her side, Gladys Love Presley dies at the Methodist Hospital. She was only 46. Cause of death is a heart attack brought on by acute hepatitis.
"I knew what it was before I answered," Elvis says of his father's phone call some fifteen minutes later.
The funeral is held the next afternoon.
At the cemetery Elvis leans over the grave, crying out inconsolably, "Goodbye, darling, goodbye. I love you so much. You know how much I lived my whole life for you."
AUGUST 16, 1977: At about 2:15am, Elvis calls Dr. Nick to request some painkillers after returning from his evening visit to his dentist. A couple of hours later Elvis play racquetball and then sits down at the piano and sings "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain":
"In the twilight I see her, Blue eyes crying in the rain,
When we kissed goodbye and parted, I knew we'd never meet again...
Love is like a dyin' ember .. and only memories remain...
And through the ages I'll remember, Blue eyes crying in the rain.
Someday when we meet up yonder, We'll stroll hand in hand again.
In the land that knows no parting, Blue eyes crying in the rain."
Ginger Alden would discover Elvis later that afternoon, lying face down on his bathroom carpet. An ambulance rushes Elvis to Baptist Hospital where his death is recorded at 3:30 PM. Elvis was only 42.

Fans flock to Graceland to remember Elvis Presley: Silent mourners with heads bowed and yellow-orange candlelight leading the way paid their respects to Elvis Presley at his grave at Graceland, to remember the 34th anniversary of his sudden death.
An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 devotees from all over the world gathered at Presley's home overnight, slowly walking through the Graceland family cemetery and leaving flowers and other mementos at the singer's gravesite. Thousands of Elvis devotees with candles in hand, walked in the humid night, many of them some wiping away tears as they filed past. Flower arrangements and heart-shaped wreaths decorated the burial site as "If I Can Dream" and other songs played softly in the background.
The vigil was to extend past midnight and into Tuesday morning, marking the anniversary of the King's death on Aug. 16, 1977.
Fans like 60-year-old Joe Makowski — who claims he saw Elvis in concert 81 times — and his girlfriend, Pamela Hembree, were among the first in line and

waited for hours along Graceland's outer brick wall. A New Jersey native who owns four of Elvis' concert-worn scarves and has attended several vigils, he said it was time to introduce her to the Elvis Week experience honoring the life and career of the rock `n' roll star.
"I get to meet new fans and meet new people, so that's why I line up here early in the day," said Makowski, who went to Las Vegas twice a year between 1971 and 1976 to see Elvis perform. "The biggest thing I get out of it is seeing the young fans that weren't even born until years after he passed away."
Makowski said he admires Elvis because of his singing, generosity and performing prowess, of course, but also for what he called the singer's overall coolness.
Temperatures were in the high 80s much of the day, sharply down from the suffocating 100-degree heat that greeted Elvis fans last August. While around 18,000 people attended, it is nothing near the 75,000-strong crowd that's expected to flock to Graceland in 2012 for the 35th anniversary of the singer's death.

The next concert release will feature a previously unknown multi-track recording of Elvis' Richmond show, March 18 1974. Taken from a tape copy (2 channels mix-down) of a 16-track recording, the show is complete (with some tape damage that has been fixed/altered). It has been mastered by Vic Anesini!
This recording was made 2 days before 'Recorded live on stage in Memphis'. It’s an unbelievable discovery: The recording 48 hours to Memphis came from a newly discovered, unmarked tape which later appeared to be a copy of the 16-track recording machine. People who attended the concert from Richmond and heard 48 hours to Memphis believe that this recording came closest to the actual experience of an Elvis Presley concert. North Carolina museum to exhibit photos of Elvis: The Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City is showing the works of a photographer who shot pictures of the sit-ins in Greensboro, Elvis Presley and rural life in North Carolina. The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reports that the museum is showing an exhibit of the works of 81-year-old Bruce Roberts, including a photo for Life magazine from the sit-ins. Roberts will be at the museum Saturday to sign copies of his book, "Just Yesterday: North Carolina People and Places.' Among his photos is one of a young Elvis Presley when he performed at a National Guard Armory in Tampa, Florida. Roberts was an award-winning photographer with The Charlotte Observer who also was the photo editor for Southern Living magazine. He and his wife live in Morehead City.

Elvis Magic LIVE in Memphis!: The concert "Elvis Presley Live" was the main event for this Elvis Week 2011. It promised a new exciting multi-media music event and fans lucky enough to be there have said this really is the new way forward for Elvis In Concert.
Unlike the old video back-projection where Elvis always looked down at the band below him, the new state-of-art transparent led video-screen hangs across the whole stage enabling Elvis to be PART of the band.
EIN contributor Steve Millingham sent us this email from Memphis after the show and sounded mightily impressed...
"The 2011 Elvis In Concert show was AMAZING. This time they used a see-through screen across the whole stage so that Elvis can be projected onto it, as almost part of the real group. I have seen other bands use this in recent years but usually for lighting FX and clever images only. The Elvis show became much more a 3D show than before with only the back projection of Elvis.

It was a shame that the TCB Band did not play but the new band were fantastic and played with great energy and feeling.
The only problem was that not enough editing had been done with the "Elvis" vision and at times the TCB band were shown as well as the band on stage. ELVIS also changed in size and actual stage position too much which kind spoiled the illusion at times - but this could be fixed with major editing.
If this the direction how event producer Stigg Edgren is heading then it will be GREAT once they can sort out the editing and overall visuals properly. If this was the first "taster" of a future properly edited production then I am more than satisfied. ELVIS IN CONCERT Lives AGAIN! - Steven in Memphis."
Peter Verbruggen from ElvisMatters reported similarly being impressed. But he also noted...
"Here's another problem that producer Stig Edgren needs to find a solution to: Elvis is constantly shrimping and growing from 3 to 15 feet and back, while the live band on stage obviously remains at place. It is a huge challenge, but IF Elvis - with help of the latest modern technology - would be projected between his new live band, 'life size', now THAT would really take the Elvis experience to the next level.
What we saw, was a very promising concept that still needs a lot of work and creativity before it is ready to go overseas to smaller theaters (1500 - 5000 seaters). Master of Ceremony Joe Guercio hinted at the possibility to take this show on the road and that would be great IF the concept is improved. Let's just say that it would be a serious risk to do this very same show to Europe or other parts of the world. It's great for die hard fans, but for a more general, somewhat spoiled audience there's just not enough magic to it. It was a wonderful evening, but let's be honest: how could it not be - this was The Man Himself during Elvis Week in a Memphis Theatre with Elvis fans from all over the world. - Peter Verbruggen reporting for ElvisMatters.

Historical Beale Street marker for Lansky Brothers: This afternoon, the Lansky Bros. clothing store received a historical marker in front of the original location at 126 Beale Street. The marker tells the Lansky Bros. story and their connection with Elvis. The unveiling ceremony was attended by over a hundred people, including Bernard Lansky's grandchildren and 'Master of Ceremony' George Klein. Bernard Lansky (Right: standing in the middle) has had health issues this year and although he attended the unveiling he did not speak.

Photographers upset by FTD's Fashion book Copyright Infringement: Although the new FTD book 'Fashion For A King' has only just been released two keen Elvis photographers are already upset over Copyright Infringement of their images.
Prize winning amateur photographer, Tony Stuchbury is furious after finding he had paid out £80.00 for the new FTD
book/CD release "Fashion For A King", only to find one of his photographs staring back at him.
The owner of the Elvis Presley Scrapbook website says that he has already sent out E-mails and private messages asking for an explanation but he has not yet received a proper reply.
Tony Stuchbury notes, "The facts are the facts - photo taken by me, taken from my site, used without permission, payment or credit and even amended and manipulated (another offence) and published in their book."
EIN has also been notified of the fact that there are others with copyright issues surrounding this book. Laurens van Houten and Arjan Deelen, who wrote "Elvis: Caught In A Trap" in ’02, are very unhappy with the facts that photos from that book were used by Granlund. Apparently the scans for the book were sold illegitimately to Granlund. Both Van Houten and Deelen want to see FASHION FOR A KING first before commenting fully on the matter.
Van Houten is a professional and well-known rock photographer and his images earn him a living, so copyright is a serious issue for him.
EIN points out that 'Fashion For A King' is not a FTD produced book. FTD is only distributing the book which is published by Pål Granlund/Flaming Star.

"We were booked to fly home the next day," says original member Barry Whitwam. "But that night after the last show we got a telephone call from Colonel Tom Parker – and he said that Elvis Presley would like to meet Herman’s Hermits* on his film set the next day. Elvis was filming Paradise Hawaiian Style. (* see Marty Lacker update below)
"We could see about 13 motor bikes side by side coming towards us," says Barry. "We could see that Elvis was in the centre of the riders as they roared onto the film set. What an entrance.
As Elvis approached us I was spellbound, it was as if God had come down from heaven. We had about two hours with Elvis and talked about our tour of America. He knew we had millions of fans there but I don’t think he really understood why!"
Peter Noone was lead singer of Herman’s Hermits and interviewed Elvis on the set of Paradise Hawaiian Style.

Secondly, we did not ride motorcycles in Hawaii we used cars, we were already on the set when Herman and The Hermits showed up.
I might add they made a fool of themselves especially when Peter tried to get Elvis to say they were his favorite group.

Elvis fan dies leading tour of 'King' sites in Elvis week: An Elvis fan who was "consumed" with "The King" died Friday doing what he loved -leading a tour of an out-of-the-way Elvis landmark. Jim Browder, (right) owner and operator of J B Tours, died en route to a hospital from the Kang Rhee Institute on North Germantown Parkway about 3:30 p.m.
Mr. Browder, whose company specialized in Elvis-themed excursions, was giving a tour of the Cordova karate studio where Elvis once trained.
His friend, Jamie Coyne, said Mr. Browder "died doing what he loved. He was consumed with Elvis ... and he met people and made friends from all over the world through his tour," he said.
An Arkansas native who later lived in Olive Branch and Memphis, Mr. Browder, 47, started his tours in 2001 by taking friends to lesser-known Elvis landmarks across the city, including the singer's favorite eateries, hangouts and motor shops.

Mr. Browder, who authored three books on Elvis and his life in Memphis, shared his passion with others not only through tours, but with memorabilia. He was known to gift tourists with Elvis-themed books, CDs and DVDs that he had collected. "He gave most of it away," Coyne said.
Mr. Browder, who served in the Navy in the early '80s, had a heart attack at an Elvis event in Tampa, last year.

Music Maker Interviews Duke Bardwell, Bobby Wood & ‘Stump’ Monroe: The latest issue of "Music Maker” (No. 5/2011), a Dutch specialist magazine for musicians, contains a neat 4-page feature about the ‘Original Elvis Tribute’ show. The article was written by ex-Link Wray bass-player Eric Geevers, who interviewed Duke Bardwell, Bobby Wood and Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe at the band’s rehearsals in Delft, Holland last April. Naturally the interviews center on their associations with Elvis (Duke tells the ‘waterpistol fight’ story) and the preparations for the ‘Original Elvis Tribute’ show, but each of the musicians are also asked what advice and tips they have for young musicians.
A very interesting read.

Elvis is Everywhere ... in Memphis! Elvis Matters report that almost every daily and weekly news paper in Memphis has Elvis on the cover this week. And we have read some interesting facts and statistics.
Less then 1% of the visitors are from the city of Memphis, over 99% is from elsewhere. And among the international fans, Canada holds the number 1 spot with 27.91%. The UK fans have a share of 21.79%, while Dutch fans (The Netherlands) come in 7th place with 3.4%.

Cody Slaughter Wins 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest: EPE sends congratulations to Cody Slaughter of Harrison, Arkansas who won the 2011 Ultimate ETA Contest title at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis! Cody was the winner of the Tupelo Elvis Festival preliminary round.
He had the crowd, the look, the moves, the smile and so much showmanship that Cody Slaughter (shown right) made the 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contest no contest.
Slaughter came out as rock-and-roll Elvis in a pink suit jacket, followed by a crimson jacket and, for the finale, a white jacket. He defeated nine other finalists at The Orpheum Friday night, eight of them wearing typical white jumpsuits.
Slaughter looked like a dead ringer for the Elvis image on the billboards for Graceland. He looked more like Elvis than the other contestants and easily had the best dance moves. He won $20,000 in the contest, which started with 350 tribute artists.
Ben Klein of Spokane, Washington, winner of the Ultimate ETA Contest at Chinook Winds Casino Resort, came in second.
Pete Storm of London, England, winner of the Collingwood Elvis Festival preliminary, took home third place.
Ted Torres and Australian Mark Anthony rounded out the top five.

'Stage Rehearsal' FTD Review: Elvis' triumphant return to live performances was filmed by MGM in August 1970. The live footage in ‘That's The Way It Is’ was compiled from six concerts, filmed over four nights from the Opening Show on August 10th to the August 13th Dinner Show.
The new FTD focuses on the August 10th Dress Rehearsal for these all-important concerts - it also includes 6 Bonus Songs from 1972 & 1973.
EIN had high expectations of this great rehearsal, after all as a Fan Club Collectors’ release we pay good money to hear the real Elvis warts and all. However much of original spontaneity of Elvis' great performance has somehow been lost in the FTD production. On the other hand, there is no doubting that the remastered sound quality is fantastic and there are some real treats along the way especially with the Bonus Songs.

Top Ten Ultimate ETA Contest Finalists Announced: EIN realizes that there is ONLY ONE ELVIS – however the Memphis Ultimate ETA Contests are very popular with a large number of fans, especially during Elvis Week.
Today, 26 of the best Elvis tribute artists in the world took the stage at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Memphis to compete for the ultimate title. The following Elvis tribute artists were selected as the top ten. They will go on to compete in the final round tomorrow, August 12.
Top ten finalists are (in alphabetical order): David Allen, Mark Anthony, Johnny Fortuno, Gordon Hendricks, Ben Klein, Kevin Mills, Ben Portsmouth, Cody Slaughter, Pete Storm, Ted Torres.
Tomorrow night EPE annouce the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2011.

Suzanna Leigh Claims Attacks and Elvis was Killed!: In one of the wierdest press releases so far this year, Suzanna Leigh who co-starred in the 1966 Elvis Presley movie, "Paradise Hawaiian Style" announces that she is about to publish another book about her life and career and inside she makes a claim that Elvis was Murdered - and that she has now become the target of mysterious attacks.
‘'My car has been broken into and the steering deliberately dismantled, my house has been raided but nothing stolen and I have been shot at,’' claims Leigh, who now lectures at Elvis festivals and believes the attacks might be linked to her contention that Presley was killed.
The odd thing is that she has already published her book of memoirs, 'Paradise, Suzanna Style', released back in 2000 by Pen Press Publishers. EIN wonders how she can have remembered anything notable since then? How did she previously forget Elvis was killed?
Now Suzanna Leigh says she is so concerned that she is moving away from Memphis to Florida so she can be near her recently married actress daughter, Natalia Denny.

Changes coming to Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva Elvis': Cirque du Soleil announced Wednesday that "Viva Elvis" will get a makeover to "make it less of a biographical representation of Elvis Presley and more of an acrobatic Cirque du Soleil spectacular production," according to a statement from the company's senior publicist, Renee-Claude Menard.
The Aria production will take an extended break in January. Cirque and its landlord already had "common agreement" that "the bio expression of Elvis is not necessarily appealing to our demographic, the type of demographics we'd like to have, so let's look at it a different way. Make it a Cirque du Soleil spectacular featuring Elvis as a singer," Menard said.
As such, the character of Elvis' manager, Tom Parker, as narrator likely will be eliminated, though "I think we have to wait until the changes are all done," Menard said. The size of the company will remain "at least the same, if not bigger," Menard said. The show will remain as is until the end of the year.
Failure is not an option for Cirque in Las Vegas, which has seven shows on the Strip and hasn't closed one since "Mystere" debuted in 1993. But

"Viva Elvis" is the second consecutive production to undergo dramatic revision after underwhelming public and critical reception.
"The really big changes are taking time to come because they're expensive and needed approval," artistic director Gene Lubas said in January. "I want to use more Cirque trickery and magic to bring the show closer to the public."

If they're deemphasizing Elvis, what's the point in calling it "Viva Elvis"? Plus this may indicate that the show may have not been sold out most of the time.
Quit frankly I predicted this when it first started when I found out what kind of show it was. Elvis is not "Broadway" nor a "Circus" and with Priscilla's input as technical consultant on this Elvis show I knew it wouldn't be all that good.

Elvis Exhibit Now Open at Musical Instrument Museum: Arizonans who have seen Elvis Presley in movies, TV shows and photographs can get an up-close look at items the King used in concert, wore onstage and kept at his Graceland mansion in a new exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum.
'ELVIS PRESLEY: THREE DECADES OF THE KING' is open every day of the week at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix, Arizona. Admission is free with regular museum admission, $10-$15.
Items on display as part of "Three Decades of the King" include:
Martin D-28 guitar - The tan six-string that was restored by Peters is one of several acoustic guitars used by Presley. It came to MIM with a crack in the body. Elvis used it in his last concert, in Indianapolis on June 26, 1977.
Jumpsuit - The so-called Red Ladder Suit was worn by Presley in Las Vegas during his summer 1970 engagement.
Army jacket: Worn by Presley during his years of service in the Army from 1958 to 1960.
Bongos - A pair of bongos that were a Christmas gift to Presley from his future wife, Priscilla, shortly after the two had met in Europe.
Double-necked Gibson guitar - This burgundy electric guitar is similar to the model used by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin in the '70s. The two-neck configuration allows the player to switch between six- and 12-string setups. The Gibson was used in the 1966 movie "Spinout."

"Million Dollar Quartet" Announces 2011-2012 U.S. Tour: The "Million Dollar Quartet" US musical is taking its jam session on the road! A U.S. tour of the hit musical will launch in October 2011 at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio. The musical is based on the real-life December 1956 recording by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins at Sun Studio in Memphis.
After the October 2011 start in Cleveland it will travel to Rochester, Pittsburgh and Buffalo all the way down the coast to Miami Florida for the New Year stopping around a week in each city.
So far the tours is booked through to June in Las Vegas and July in Los Angeles at the Pantages Theatre.

Elvis’ Karate School To Be Demolished: Andrew Hearne of Essential Elvis has posted this sad news... One of the few remaining places with a true and solid Elvis connection in Memphis will soon be gone forever. The building which housed the old Tennessee Karate Institute (TKI) on the Corner of N. Cleveland Street and Overton Park Avenue has just been purchased by the Jehovah’s Witnesses Assembly and plans to demolish the entire building have been put in place. The current lease holder has been given 12 months notice to vacate the premises before work begins.
It was early 1974, Elvis’ friend & Grand Master established a new karate school in Memphis known as the Tennessee Karate Institute (TKI). Red West, another of Elvis’ buddies and fellow enthusiast, operated the school and

acted as chief instructor along with national champion Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace. Elvis was extremely excited about the new school, which was based on the entire top floor of this building, and he endorsed it willingly by appearing on posters displayed all over the city.

Elvis' Zippin Pippin a Big Success at new home: The roller coaster, which opened May 21 as the latest attraction at Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, now has extended hours due to its popularity.
The city spent about $3.8 million to acquire the Zippin Pippin rights and recreate the attraction at city-owned Bay Beach. The wooden roller coaster previously operated for several decades in Memphis, Tenn., where it was renowned as Elvis Presley's favorite amusement park ride.
With the new lighting system, the roller coaster will be able to run after dusk.
According to Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt, Monday was the 34th anniversary of Elvis Presley's last ride on the Zippin Pippin in Memphis, Tenn. The lighting of the ride was accompanied by Elvis impersonators, music and a countdown. Officials originally projected that the city would need 200,000 riders annually, at $1 each, to make the roller coaster a financial success. That milestone was reached July 14, barely halfway through a season that continues until September. At the end of the day Sunday, the coaster had 310,778 riders.
Elvis would be proud.

The Elvis Kiss Mystery-Revealed!: Vanity Fair in the US has finally identified the mystery woman seen kissing singer Elvis Presley in a backstage theater stairwell in an iconic 1956 photograph. The article by author Alanna Nash describes in detail how Barbara Gray, now 75 and living in Charleston, S.C. didn't reveal her identity for the money or fame.
"I just wanted to get my name on the damn picture," she said.
Gray admitted that she become fed up with being known only as the "unknown woman in the wings" with a young Elvis in a stairwell at the Mosque Theater in Richmond, Virginia.
Photographer Alfred Wertheimer said he never asked for the woman's name when he took the photograph and she never told it to him.
After newspaper coverage of Wertheimer's photography exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. in early 2010 showed him standing in front of the photograph called "The Kiss," Gray tracked Wertheimer on Facebook and sent him a message.
"I'm the girl. 'The Kiss.' Have a good story for you," she said.
But Wertheimer, who had heard from many women who claimed to be the woman in the photo, didn't respond at first. Gray's claim was aired on local radio station WTMA.

One listener, however, had his doubts. Broadcast veteran Ron Brandon had recorded Presley’s homecoming concert in Tupelo, Mississippi, when Brandon was a 17-year-old engineer at WTUP radio. He got suspicious when the caller mispronounced the name of the Mosque Theatre. But after they finally connected in person, she won him over, and Brandon, in turn, got in touch with Alanna Nash. He thought Nash might be able to authenticate her story since she’d just published a book the month before on Presley’s love life, Baby, Let’s Play House.
While Gray's recollections of the time and place were accurate, the clincher was her height. She is only four feet, 11 inches, the same height as the woman in the picture.
"God he's beautiful," Gray recalled thinking when she met Presley, then 21, at his hotel in Richmond. But she also found him "kind of insecure" with an accent that made him sound like "a goofy guy from the sticks."
On meeting her, Elvis motioned for Bobbi to sit on the vinyl chair next to him, and then gave her a hug before angling closer.
“Would you like something to drink, a beer maybe?” Elvis ventured.
The question threw her. A coffee shop serving beer? Maybe this was just a test. “No,” Bobbi declined.
“That’s good,” Elvis said, “‘cause I don’t let my women drink.”
“I’m not your woman,” Bobbi snipped.
“Do you smoke?” Elvis pushed.
“No,” she fibbed.
“Good. I don’t like my women to smoke, either.”
“I told you I’m not your woman.. . . If I want to smoke and have a beer, I’ll do it.”

Elvis 1953 Martin Acoustic Guitar For Sale. This Martin acoustic guitar did not sell in the recent auction. It is now offered for direct sale by Heritage Auctions until Monday, August 15.
The sale info states,,, This stunning Martin 00-21 acoustic with natural finish was played by Presley during the early years of his career. Elvis preferred Martins due to their unique sound, and his first stage guitar was a Martin 000-18. (He later upgraded to a Martin D-18.) This particular guitar was later given as a gift by Presley to actor and Hawaii Five-O star Jack Lord. Presley befriended Lord and his wife Marie while working on his Aloha from Hawaii TV special. Elvis gave Jack a gold Walther PPK, and Jack reciprocated with a banjo from his collection of vintage musical instruments. Months later, when the Lords visited Elvis in Las Vegas, Presley gave Marie a custom-made belt, and Jack received this remarkable guitar.
The instrument is in Excellent condition, with the original hardshell case included. LOAs from Elvis associate Joe Esposito and the Jack Lord Estate. Estimate: $75,000 - up.

'The Essential Elvis' certified Gold in Sweden & back in the Charts: Last week, the 2CD compilation album ‘The Essential Elvis Presley’ re-entered the Swedish album chart at #22. This week, the album rises from #22 to #17. That is the best position the album has been listed on the chart since it left the Top10 back in September 2007! The album has spent five weeks on the chart so far this year, which adds to a total of 34 weeks since its debut in 2007. ‘The Essential’ initially peaked at #1, and stayed in the Top10 for 8 consecutive weeks (#1 for two weeks). It is currently certified Gold in Sweden.

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Elvis Fan!: Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor gave fans a stunning surprise last night at his recent concert at the Hard Rock Hotel. Everybody expected a major dose of heavy metal, but Corey wanted a break from his regular routine.
Corey’s appearance, dressed as Elvis Presley, won cheers and raves from the crowd at the Beach Club. Corey and his band rapidly launched into a series of unlikely and entertaining cover tunes, including "Jessie’s Girl" by Rick Springfield, Green Day’s "Basket Case," "Just What I Needed" by The Cars and Nirvana’s "About a Girl."
Corey Taylor has told of his interest Rock'n'Roll and Elvis, and has previously performed 'Burning Love' in concert.

Elvis & 'Follow That Dream' mystery man: Reported across various new outlets is this strange story of Lake of the Woods resident Al Fleming.
The rare photo is a cracker, but EIN suspects the story is another example of total exageration.

.. I wasn't on Follow That Dream but when they came home nobody ever mentioned this guy.
Al Fleming didn't work for Elvis ever and I never heard of him before this story. I laughed at the part that he was told he looked like Elvis. If that's him in that picture shaking Elvis' hand then he looks as much like Elvis as I do a young Tony Curtis!
The reported story is ....
The filming of Elvis Presley’s Follow That Dream in Citrus and Levy counties 50 years ago this summer led Al Fleming to follow his own dream—and the King—to California, where they became lifelong friends. (EIN - As if!!)
Fleming was a 17-year-old Crystal River High School senior who was renting boats at Port Paradise Motel when he first spotted Elvis across the canal from his docks.

Fleming had heard the King was coming to town. He was a big fan and even looked like Elvis, with the long sideburns and slicked-back hairstyle.
One day, Elvis yelled hello across the canal as Fleming was bailing out some boats.
“I was trying to be cool,” Fleming recalled this week, “but all I could do was stutter and stammer.”
They ended up becoming friends and when filming stopped each day, Elvis and some of his entourage rented boats from Fleming, now 69 and living in the mountains of California.
One day, Fleming’s mom asked him to invite Elvis and some of the guys over for some homemade fried chicken.
Fleming did, and to his surprise Elvis – one of the biggest stars in the world at that time – accepted.
They ate fried chicken, Fleming said, and played music on the family piano and organ late into the night.
“Those are some of my fondest memories,” Fleming said, “To me it was real exciting. I had always been an Elvis fan and here he was, sitting in my house, eating chicken, playing the organ and singing gospel songs.”
The friendship blossomed and when the filming was over, Elvis asked Fleming to come with him to California to hang out as part of his entourage. He looked enough like the King to be a stand-in and do stunts.
“I said ‘Heck, yes,’” Fleming recalled. “I went home and told my mom I was going to Hollywood with Elvis and she said, ‘Like hell you are.’”
He worked with Elvis for more than two years, performing as a stand-in and stunt double in several movies.(EIN - See Marty Lacker comment) He soon tired of the work, though, and quit in the mid 1960s. He didn’t want to be among the many who always had their hands out.
“I got sick of being a flunky,” he said.

Good News Sonny West Heading Home:Both Marty Lacker and Sandi Pichon report that Sonny West’s health is greatly
improved and he is heading home at last.
- .. I am happy to report that Sonny West has greatly recovered from his long illness and he is getting stronger every day and he is slated to go home from the hospital this weekend after 47 days in the hospital. His Staph infection is gone and he no longer is losing blood.
He will continue his physical strengthening at a local gym and we are all happy for his return to civilization.

Elvis Presley LIVE - The King in Concert will be hosted by Joe Guercio, Elvis' musical conductor and close friend for many years and also feature Elvis' Imperials.
The band will however be, according to EPE, a "hot studio session band" Is this the future of 'Elvis In Concert'?
The 2011 Elvis Week celebration will feature an exciting new multi-media music event on Saturday, August 13! Live Elvis Presley Radio Show, Monday August 15!: According to WDVX-Radio a new recording of Elvis' April 8, 1972 Knoxville "On Tour" concert has been found!(image right) In honor of the great Elvis Presley on the anniversary of his death, WDVX-Radio will present a two hour live special devoted to the music of the King of Rock and Roll. The show is 'The Vinyl Frontier" and can be heard on-line and worldwide at at www.wdvx.com. The LIVE program will air Monday night between 9 pm and 11 pm (Knoxville, Tennessee time). DJ Hosts Bradley Reeves and Louisa Trott of the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound
will be spinning the original vinyl records released during Elvis Presley's lifetime.
Also, portions of a rare, never-before heard or previously available home tape recording of the April 8, 1972 Elvis Knoxville concert will hopefully be played, provided the original cassette tape can be transferred!

Pool Table Used by Elvis and a Beatle on Display in UK: A pool table used by Elvis Presley and Ringo Starr will play a central role in the new Elvis and Us exhibit opening at The Beatles Story in Liverpool!
Perfectly preserved and rarely displayed, the vintage pool table will help explore the evening Elvis and The Beatles met in person on August 27, 1965, at Elvis' home in Bel Air, California. To break the ice at the gathering, Elvis brought out a white Fender bass guitar, which is also part of the new exhibit. The evening soon turned into a jam session, but with no drums available for Ringo to join in the music, he and members of Elvis' entourage amused themselves with a game of pool on this very table.

Elvis Sydney Double-Bill August 17th: Cinemas Macquarie, Sydney Australia, will be showing an Elvis double feature at a special event entitled The Elvis Presley Show to mark the 34th anniversary of his death and honor the King of Rock and Roll. This one night only show is exclusive to Macquarie event cinemas and will screen on Wednesday 17 August at 6pm. The event will feature two films including 'Elvis: That’s the Way That It Is' and 'Viva Las Vegas'.
The special event will be hosted by Gareth McCray, 2CH Breakfast Presenter, and will take place on Wednesday, 17 August from 6:00pm and will include drinks and canapés with the films following at 7pm.
Alexandra Holden, General Manager, Event Cinemas Macquarie, is thrilled to be hosting a one of a kind night to celebrate the life of Elvis Presley.

Singer Deborah Allen's Tribute to Elvis: Singer and songwriter Deborah Allen pays a beautiful tribute to Elvis Presley in her new song "Amazing Graceland." It's the opening track on her album "Hear Me Now," which is being released on August 16. Allen, who was born and raised in Memphis, says the song is about her first visit inside the Graceland mansion.
"I could feel Elvis' spirit in every room" says Allen. "“I was so moved. On the way back to Nashville, the one word that kept going through my head was ‘amazing.'"
Deborah Allen will appear at several events during Elvis Week 2011, including the Candlelight Vigil on Monday, August 15.

'One Night With You' - August shows in Melbourne: In 1968, Elvis made a comeback and in 2011, Mark Andrew recreates The King at his best! A special 2 hour musical presentation starring Mark Andrew and hosted by Frankie J Holden is booked for AUGUST 19/20 in Melbourne, Australia.
In June 1968, Elvis made a memorable comeback with an NBC TV special. It is famous for the great looks of Elvis in his prime, wearing a black leather outfit. 40 + years on, Frankie J Holden will narrate the stories of this event, and the magical show will be brought back to life with a re-enactment from well acclaimed performer Mark Andrew, backed by a 10 piece band and 4 show girls.
The show will feature many segments from this '68 special never performed on a live stage before.
The second part of the show, the audience will be treated to a plethora of Elvis hits as Mark recreates Elvis in Concert.

Elvis Hot In New Orleans: Isn't it a shame when fake great-looking posters get it so wrong! 55 years ago, on August 9th 1956, Elvis played two shows at the Peabody Auditorium, Daytona Beach, Florida. Not in New Orleans as this fabulous poster states.
Elvis only played Pontchairtrain Beach on September 1, 1955, the year before. The picture of Elvis also happens to be from 1957!
This really cool poster/flyer - EIN, if only it was factually correct and used 1956 fonts and layouts!- would be great to see anywhere, and was recently spotted in the New Orleans French Quarter.

If you ever wanted to know how Elvis chipped his tooth on stage in 1971 even that is in here. With approximately 100,000 words, there will never be a better chance to read about Elvis' first engagements in Vegas as seen through the eyes of a fan who was there. Peggy wrote down her memories forty years ago but they are as honest and fresh as if it all just happened yesterday.
She didn't take any photographs of Elvis on stage but Davis has used other sources to add some super rare photographs of Elvis performing in February and August 1971, including some previously unseen images from the September 1971 closing show where Elvis wore a cape for the first time. There are also countless images of memorabilia, the hotel (inside and out), the billboards, newspaper advertising campaigns and much, much more.

Elvis returns in US Fiat Commercial: The FIAT® brand announced today the launch of an all-new marketing and advertising campaign, the first since its return to the North American market. The comprehensive campaign will be focused in the brand's key markets together with complementary national advertising efforts.
The advertising campaign kicks off with its first broadcast commercial, titled "Drive-in," which debuts on national and cable networks today and features Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock". The song was an instant classic and inspired a generation; it was released in 1957, the same year as the introduction of the Fiat 500 in Europe. The 30-second television commercial is a perfect juxtaposition of brand heritage, Elvis, and today's Fiat 500.

Unseen EBay Elvis Candids Will Be Seen!: Often when we see news of wonderful unseen Elvis candid photos, like the 11 from the set of 'Viva Las Vegas' recently offered on EBay, that's the last we see of them as the collector who buys them usually hides them away. But not this time!
Happily these 11 candids (mini examples, right) were purchased by E P Scrapbook's Tony Stuchbury, and he has notified us that the images will be appearing in the September issue of the excellent 'Elvis The Man & His Music'.

Elvis Fan Inspires Author’s Novel: Author Marie Vernon has written four books and hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, but it took an interview with an Elvis fan to compel her to write her first novel, "Graceland Express."

'Desert Serenade' new Import CD: Touchdown Productions announce their next CD Desert Serenade. It contains the former unreleased Midnight Show from August 16, 1972 in Las Vegas. The source for this release is of very good quality!
EIN notes - The audio is only an audience recording, the publicity is naughty in not stating this. This concert has also been released previously on CDR as 'Sin City Superstar'. Straight Arrow's previously released 'Red Hot In Vegas' also gave us an excellent audience recording from the same season from August 23, 1972.

'The Bicentennial King Vol.3' new 1976 Import CD: From the new label MILLBRANCH MUSIC their third release. Out by August 16, 2011 this will be a factory pressed cd (no cdr!!!) limited to 500 copies with an 8 page booklet containing lots of photos and different original 1976 Shreveport, LA newspaper articles with information regarding the Elvis concert at the Hirsch Coliseum on July 1, 1976. The sound is very good for an audience recording and Elvis is delivering a fine show, being in good spirits. This show has NOT been released yet on factory pressed cd . All you fans out there know what to expect from Elvis´ Shreveport 76 show - so if you are interested be advised to get your copy as soon as you can. By the way: Volume 4 is soon to follow (in early October).

New 'Elvis Vinyl Bootleg' book for 2012: A new website promises a giant book on Elvis' Vinyl Bootleg releases. The authors are very pleased to announce that they are on the final stretch, adding last minute information, doing corrections and a final proof reading that will lead us into graphical designing by September.
In April 2012 this most extensive, informative and hopefully also very enjoyable book, to be simply titled Bootleg Elvis, will be made available to all of you with an undying love for the good old (illicit) vinyl records of Elvis Presley.
All the covers are printed in full color! 1000+ pics of Elvis vinyl bootlegs over 500 pages. And over twenty stories from the original bootleggers telling how they made these original boots back in the 70s and 80s. | Good News Sonny West Health Update: Sandi Pichon has at last sent EIN some recent good news about Sonny West's health.
Good news as Sonny is feeling much better today. They are giving him his medicine and major antibiotics with Glucerna which coats his stomach and doesn't make him feel so sick. Don't know why it took them so long to figure it out! I am very much encouraged! Sonny is however in quarantine due to an airborne infection.
And this is going in to the 5th week he has been hospitalized. Please continue your prayers.

Taking place August 10-16, this year marks the 55th anniversary of many Elvis firsts, including his first RCA single and national hit, 'Heartbreak Hotel', his first movie, 'Love Me Tender' and his first television appearances. Events for this year feature old fan favorites as well as numerous new ones, including Elvis Presley LIVE - The King in Concert, to be held on Saturday, August 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Orpheum. This exciting, new multi-media music event puts a hot studio-session band and back-up vocalists on stage for a theatrical experience in Memphis as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is projected, larger than life, on state-of-the-art screens. This is a virtual Elvis Presley concert, with Elvis singing lead vocals, presented exactly like one of his classic live performances at the Las Vegas Hilton showroom. The contemporary staging and overall production help create the illusion that Elvis is on stage.

Elvis Week - In Phoenix!: Under the desert sun, sequined jumpsuits are glistening brighter than ever as the Musical Instrument Museum announces its hip-shaking new exhibit – Elvis Presley: Three Decades of The King. Check out this cool behind-the-scenes photo of Elvis' Red Ladder TTWII jumpsuit from the new Exhibit which officially opens to the public on Saturday, Aug. 6, just in time for Elvis Week, Aug. 10 – 16.
We’re not talking about Graceland or Las Vegas, but about Phoenix, at Arizona’s Musical Instrument Museum.
The new Elvis exhibit will feature a collection of items on loan from Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis, TN and will tell the story of Elvis through three main periods of the King’s career:
- ·The early rock ’n’ roll years, culminating with his stint in the Army (1956–1960)
- ·His Hollywood years (1960–1968)
- ·His triumphant return to live performance (1968–1977)
Guests will get to experience The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll through a collection of personal items, clothing and musical instruments.
One exhibit highlight is the priceless 1975 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar that Elvis played during his 1977 tours. In addition to displaying it, MIM was chosen by EPE to restore the guitar.

'An Afternoon In The Garden' Best Selling Elvis album of 2011: 'An Afternoon In The Garden' has once again re-entered the Billboard 200 this week - at #177 - with 3,087 copies sold.
- As of (late) October last year, the album had scanned a total of 194,552 units.
- A total of 306,183 units had been scanned in the US, as of last Sunday.
Consequently, 'An Afternoon In The Garden' sold/scanned approximately 112,000 copies in the past 9 months.
To date, the album has spent 20 weeks on the Catalogue chart and 14 weeks on the Billboard 200. 'An Afternoon In The Garden' is, with quite a margin, the best-selling Elvis album in 2011. Its chart performance and sales are actually better than the all the "new" Sony mainstream Elvis releases from the past ~3 years (including 'Viva Elvis' & 'Elvis '75').
The album re-entered the charts back in February 2011 and has been dipping in and out of both the Billboard 'Top 200' and 'Catalog Chart'.

Elvis Presley made a special fashion of his famous and spectacular stage outfits, sometimes referred to as ”jumpsuits”. In every country there is an “Elvis impersonator” well dressed up in a copy of one of Elvis Presley’s outfits. The name “Elvis” is heard of in every corner of the world, and nearly everybody have heard about the dynamic performer dressed in a typical “seventies suit” with rhinestones and embroideries in different patterns. But what many people don’t know, is that these suits have their own name and their own story to tell. Not many people know how these outfits came to be characteristics for Elvis on stage, and their development during the years. It all started with the “Black Leather Suit” in 1968, and ended with the “Mexican Sundial Suit” in 1977.Elvis became King Of Concerts in the late sixties and seventies – and the stage outfits became an important part of his shows. In this encyclopaedia of more that 500 pages we will present you to a full documentary of all Elvis’ suits from his famous Comeback Special in 1968, his return to live performances in Las Vegas in 1969 and his many tours and TV Specials through the 1970’s. You will have the background story of each and every suit, when Elvis used them for the first and the last time - and their whereabouts today. |

We will also give you the background story of the very skilled designers who made these famous outfits. Elvis often mixed suits and belts as he pleased. Here you will see them all. This book is the result of hundreds of working hours with research and “digging” through enormous amounts of documentation. After doing a long article series in the Norwegian “Flaming Star” Fan Club Magazine, our publisher, Pål Granlund asked if we were interested in making a book of the published material. Pål Granlund is one of a few Norwegians who have had the honour of meeting The King in person in Las Vegas and on tour. We have worked closely with Pål in this project, and as a result of this, we can now present - for the first time - a book with a fully documented story and pictures of Elvis Presley’s stage outfits. This book is not meant only for the hardcore “jumpsuit”-fan, but also as an encyclopaedia for fans all over the world to learn more about these great, original stage-outfits. Never has a book been more complete on this issue, and you will see rare photos and photos you have never seen before. We are very proud of this project and the opportunity to give you an idea of how these suits became the typical trademark of Elvis’ legacy as a live performer.
