Colonel Parker on ABC's Nightline: Recently noted on FECC is this August 1987 interview from Colonel Tom Parker aged 78, with ABC news Anchorman Ted Koppel.
Midnightx succinctly commented, "Parker was a complicated man. A somewhat innovative manager for the new genre of Rock N Roll during the mid/late 50's (his influence on marketing, promotion and exposure is still felt today), but a man that lacked artistic vision and an ability to evolve. His style and approach was never refined and became outdated. He ultimately derailed the career of Elvis Presley because he lacked vision and sophistication to manage an act during the mid/late 60's and 70's."

2011 Tupelo Elvis Festival – On Sale Now: The 2011 Tupelo Elvis Festival is June 2 - 5. Always a big event celebrating Elvis in Tupelo, Mississippi, his Birthplace, the festival features a long weekend of fun and entertainment.
Events include a 5K run, parade, movie poster exhibit, and Sunday gospel concert. There will also be live performances from artists such as Sonny Burgess and The Pacers with DJ Fontana.
Plus, there will be a 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest preliminary round. The winner will get to compete in the semifinal round in Memphis during Elvis Week 2011.
Tickets for the 2011 Tupelo Elvis Festival are on sale now. Purchase them at the festival's office at 108 South Broadway in Tupelo, Mississippi or by calling 662-841-6598.

Wintersun Festival in Australia in June: Meanwhile downunder in Australia the annual Rock’n’Roll Wintersun Festival delivers two weeks of Rock'n'Roll across a variety of events such as street parades, concerts, dancing and classic and vintage car parades, performances and entertainment reflective of the 40's 50's and 60's, plus plenty of Elvis - and for the first time in picturesque Port Maquarie.
The Wintersun Festival is on June 3-13, 2011 in New South Wales, Australia and will also feature an Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest preliminary round. Three rounds of competition will be held on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10, with the finals on Saturday, June 11. The winner will go on to compete at Elvis Week 2011 in Memphis.

Budapest names Elvis Presley honorary citizen: Budapest's city council has named Elvis Presley an honorary citizen of the Hungarian capital in gratitude for his support of Hungary's anti-Soviet revolution of 1956.
Last wednesday's announcement comes nearly a month after municipal authorities named a small park – chosen by voting on the city website – after The King.
On Jan. 6, 1957, during his last appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Elvis sang a gospel standard, "Peace in the Valley," which Sullivan said reflected the singer's concern for Hungarians' plight after the short-lived uprising. Sullivan said Elvis wanted people to make donations to be sent to Hungary.

Elvis & The Platters - Marty Lacker comments: Marty Lacker comments on the Valcom Inc finance story see below, which EIN only sees as manipulative and false marketing spin.
>>> I was with Elvis in '64 and at no time did he do a recording session with the Platters or anyone else. The only way they could have his voice is if they lifted it from one of his own recordings of those songs and I don't remember him recording any if not most of those songs. They would have had to make one helluva a deal with Parker and RCA to use his voice that way.
I think this is another case of someone trying to capitalize on Elvis since he died. It's funny they have waited 34 years to make that claim. If Elvis had done that someone from The Platters or Buck Ram's assistants would have known it was done and they would have spoke up sooner. It's just some more bullshit in regards to Elvis. This is just a ploy to sell that album. - Marty.

'Original Elvis Tribute Tour' ROCKS Europe: As we posted yesterday EIN's friend Rick Crofts reported on the success of the european 'The Original Elvis Tribute Tour' 2011.

Just to see the light in these fans eyes to meet someone who knew Elvis, or performed, or recorded with Elvis was really fun. They had such energy, and a glow that was unmistakable. They loved Elvis. Period.

Period. They were in awe to meet these people, and were dying to get any kind of detail about Elvis that they could. It was such a refresher from the nit picking, and the negative vibe found in a lot of places that the hard core fans gather.
This night was a celebration of Elvis, and his music. It really was a thing of beauty. The Spanish audience was classic....a great crowd. They sang loudly through most of the songs. People were fist pumping, jumping up and down, clapping, holding each other. It was great. There were several songs where several members of the

audience were in tears, it really was that good. The feel, the vibe, the music, it was so great that it was emotionally overwhelming for many people in attendance. I had goose bumps myself many times. It really was an amazing show. Robert Washington was the star of the show up front. He didn't go up there and act like he was in character as Elvis, he was Robert Washington, singing Elvis' songs. There were no jumpsuits, or aviator glasses, but Elvis was in the building through his amazing music, no doubt about it. A few highlights from the night were The Wonder Of You with the crowd singing almost louder than Robert, and he had the microphone, this song brought a of of tears from the girls. How Great Thou Art was a show stopper, the place was shaking, again, more people were brought to tears. 'Mystery Train' rocked the place, Chris Casello on guitar is a work of art, his chugging guitar style on the song reminds us of what an instant classic this song really is. Peace In The Valley completely stopped the show. It was performed by Mr. Duke Bardwell. Who knew the bass player could sing, and sing this well.

Elvis Recorded With The Platters?: Here's a fascinating news story spotted by EIN contributor Brian Quinn - that is unfortunately not true.
>>>> "ValCom, Inc. reported a big gain in quarterly earnings when the media and entertainment company disclosed the financial results for the 2nd quarter of its financial year.
A key statistic in the 2nd quarter 2011 financial data is the company's total assets which grew over 200% from September 2010 to over $24 million.
ValCom expects a great surge in revenues from its content library. The company has over 6,000 video and audio titles in the library. In 1st quarter 2011, an appraisal was conducted by DOS Broadcast and Appraisal Services to determine an accurate value of the content owned by the company. DOS has estimated that the value of the library exceeds $128 million. The library contains rare and unique video and audio content including 13 master recordings of Elvis Presley with The Platters; masters from Ike & Tina Turner before they were stars; and a very rare 3 Stooges film. The library also contains films starring the top names in Hollywood like Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Robert DiNiro, Jodi Foster, Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson."
EIN notes that while Elvis is said to have sung some Platters songs between recordings at the 1976 Jungle Room Sessions - no recordings exist. Elvis also sang The Platters 'Only You' in concert in his early 1950 concerts.

Elvis fan Scotty McCreery wins American Idol: Congratulations to Scott McCreery who has just been crowned the winner of "American Idol" Season 10! Scott grew up listening to Elvis Presley and has said that the King of Rock 'n' Roll is his main musical influence. During this season of Idol, Scott performed two Elvis songs, including "That's All Right" which earned him rave reviews from the judges.

Elvis & The Beatles Come Together for UK Exhibition: A unique exhibition is uniting the world's biggest music icons! Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. in Memphis, along with The Beatles Story in Liverpool, England, have announced a transatlantic partnership to develop an exclusive, jointly curated exhibition that will explore how The Fab Four were influenced by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
'Elvis and Us' represents the first time the two cornerstones of 20th century popular culture have come together since that fateful meeting in 1965 at Elvis’ Bel Air home. "Elvis: The End Of An Era" - August 1977: The 35th anniversary 2011 issue of the 'City Of Memphis' magazine features this important Elvis eulogy from that fateful month of August 1977.
It was written by Memphis professor Jackson Baker who was deeply affected by Elvis’ passing as he had spent a good several months of his late childhood as the Presleys’ next-door neighbor on Lamar Avenue, observing the meteoric rise of the new Sun Records star with keen interest and no little adulation. When the shocking news of Elvis' death broke, Jackson resolved to write about it. By any standard, the result was a remarkable journalistic achievement, a cover story that was, truly, fit for a King.
Jackson Baker today comments. "I’ve been lucky enough to experience, and to write about, many larger-than-life types — Bill Clinton being one of the most remarkable, for the power of his energy field. But nobody beats Elvis.”
>>> It was Monday evening, August 15th 1977, at the Graceland Mansion, and Elvis Presley’s aides had just informed him that they were unable to arrange a private screening of MacArthur, because a projectionist from the Ridgeway Theatre, where the film was playing, would not be available at the late hour which Elvis had requested. It was the night before Elvis and his sizeable entourage were scheduled to leave for a 13-day national tour, and he was looking for a way to relieve some of the tension that normally preceded such departures....

Florida Woman Recalls the Kiss She Got from Elvis in 1956: What a memory! About five years ago, Kathy Campbell Bray made an awesome discovery while going through some old family photographs. The Orange Park, Florida woman found a photo of Elvis Presley kissing her right cheek at one of his early concerts! He was 21 years-old at the time; she was 15.
Kathy tells the Clay Today news that the image was taken on August 10, 1956. Her father had dropped her off along with three friends to wait in line to see Elvis perform at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville. Before the concert got started, a photographer invited her and one of her friends to go backstage and meet Elvis. The photographer took a photo with his own camera of Elvis kissing her cheek and one using Kathy’s camera.
"We wore a lot of make up in those days, but I still didn’t wash my face right away" Kathy says. "It was a wonderful experience and I’m so glad I got to meet him. My best friends were with me at the concert and experiencing it with them was what counted."
"Elvis was, and still is, one of my favorites."
In fact, her parents’ support of her teen crush on Elvis was unusual since they were very strict and believed, "If you didn’t go to church on Sunday, you didn’t go out the rest of the week." She says, "My parents were good sports, when so many other parents were not. My friends would come over and we’d sit there screaming whenever Elvis performed on Ed Sullivan."

'Wild Tiger at The Hilton Vol.2' new import CD: The MxF label will release soon the second volume of 'Wild Tiger at The Hilton' featuring the unreleased Vegas September 1, 1974 Midnight Show.
Elvis' performance is superb, still at the top if his ability he deliveries a long show which is very intense, there is a freshness that cannot be denied, Elvis was very energetic on stage, full of enthusiasm he sang with power and sensitivity, delivering a solid and heartfelt repertoire like the new song "It's Midnight" and the classic "Bridge Over Troubled Water" sang terrifically. At the same time he worked in heavy rock songs like "Big Boss Man" and the showstopper "If You Talk In Your Sleep" not to forget two classic early 70' singles like 'Until It's Time for You to Go' and 'I'm Leaving' and as you can see from the tracklist no classic oldies in the show. This season will be remembered for the great opening night and naturally for the Closing Nights from the numerous dialogues, but for the superb music too, Elvis looks fantastic and it is clear that despite it all the music keeps his brain active.

have on our hands the original mono tape of extremely super quality enabling us to carry out simple re-mastering work, concentrating on the reduction of noise trying to achieve a more clear sound and of Elvis, keeping his vocal power up in the central mix and at the same time trying to give a great definition to the background music.
EIN says Buyers Beware - The MxF label described the sound on their Hilton Vol.1 as "an unbelievable audience recording.. great definition to the background music" when in fact it was extremely poor quality with unbearable audience screaming. A few EIN readers commented that "Wild Tiger Vol.1 was so poor I will probably never play it again." Hopefully this show is in better quality. The concert has been out on CDR previously.

Is 'Glee' the New Elvis, Really?!: Author Dave Whitaker has written this interesting article on whether the lightweight TV show Glee is anything like as important as Elvis' musical legacy.
>> Once upon a time there was young man who was attractive and charming. His teen followers swooned as he threatened to revolutionize their world by introducing them to his brand of music. While the kids embraced the Man, he rubbed some members of the Establishment the wrong way because his music was deemed a dangerous influence on the youth. I’m talking, of course, about Elvis Presley. No, wait. I mean, I’m talking about the basic plot line of Glee.
Elvis fans may cringe, but there are parallels between one of today’s most iconic television shows and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Much like the man from Tupelo, Mississippi, has become synonymous with American music in the ‘50s, Glee is a touchstone for the state of American music in 2011. |

The Charts - The notion that Elvis and Glee even belong in the same musical discussion was sparked by a 16 February 2011 article in Billboard magazine, "‘Glee’ Cast Tops Elvis Presley for Most Hot 100 Hits" (by Gary Trust). The industry leader’s flagship US chart, the Hot 100, crowned a new king for most chart entries – and it wasn’t The King.
A television show that was nonexistent two years ago surpassed the 108 hits Elvis Presley accumulated over a two-decade career. This statistic is a little misleading. The Hot 100 launched in 1958, by which time Elvis had already spent two years racking up 31 hits on predecessors to the Hot 100 chart (see "Ask Billboard: Who Could Break "Glee"‘s Record?", by Gary Trust, 18 February 2011). That boosts his total to 139 charted hits from 1956’s "Heartbreak Hotel" to the 2003 remix of "Rubberneckin’." As of 14 May 2011, the Glee cast had amassed 137 Hot 100 hits. Give ‘em another week.
Let’s not kid ourselves. Glee hasn’t left us with a treasure trove of immortal songs like "It’s Now Or Never" or "Suspicious Minds". When the Glee cast passed Elvis’ record, they’d logged a wimpy 150 weeks total for all their chart entries, meaning about 80 percent of their "hits" logged a solitary week on the chart. By comparison, Elvis amassed 994 cumulative weeks. Only 700 or so more Glee hits and they’ll have caught up to the King!. . . . . .

Excellent Health Update from John Wilkinson: Elvis Matters recently reported that John Wilkinson's health is doing fine. He had another medical check-up at the hospital in Springfield, MO and the test results were everything everybody hoped for. Very positive news. John Wilkinson will be one of the speakers at the Talks On Elvis event at the Orpheum in Memphis, next August during Elvis Week.

Only one of Elvis' Personal Books left on Ebay: LAST CHANCE - less than 10 hours to go. Keen Elvis fans know that Elvis liked to read books especially spiritual and religious book plus books pertaining to the entertainment industry. One day in the early 70's Marty Lacker was in Los Angeles on music business and it was the same time Elvis was in L.A. after one of his Vegas engagements. A number of times Elvis' looks were compared to that of Rudolph Valentino's and Elvis was fascinated with everything HOLLYWOOD.
In the mid 70's however when Elvis was cleaning out his bookcase he gave Marty Lacker two books as a gift, one was a Valentino book and the other was entitled "The Wit & Wisdom Of Hollywood" by Max Wilk. That book has many wonderful inside stories about Hollywood and the movie business and those that ran and participated in it. Marty kept both books a number of years and now because of personal reasons he has decided to sell them.

Joe Guercio recuperating after surgery: Meanwhile Elvis Matters reports the good news that Joe Guercio is home again after back surgery in Nashville. Joe complained about pain in his legs and doctors advised surgery. The operation was a complete success and Joe is home again, recovering. He should be the 'young himself' again in just a matter of weeks.
Of course Joe Guercio is one of the key members of the 'Elvis In Concert' tour that is expected to tour worldwide in 2012.

No jailhouse rock for UK Elvis impersonator: An Elvis impersonator who beat up TCB guitarist James Burton's son, who he thought was trying to seduce his wife has avoided a prison sentence. Michael Cawthray (right), 43, kicked Jeffery Burton (far right), 48, between the legs and broke his nose by punching him in the face after getting something of a suspicious mind at an Elvis convention.
He found his wife, Sioned, having a drink with Mr Burton who was half naked in his hotel room earlier this year.

Cawthray admitted actual bodily harm against Mr Burton, the son of one of Elvis's former guitarists - James Burton.
Judge John Phillips said: 'This was an isolated incident in which you lost control of yourself in the most disgraceful way.
'You initially kicked him between the legs. You then punched him around the face'. |

'And to use precisely your own words in interview you saw red.'
Prosecutor Mohammed Rafeez said Mr Burton had lost a lot of blood and suffered from a fractured nose.
The incident happened at Birmingham's NEC Arena in January during the European Elvis Championship where 80 impersonators competed at an event on what would have been the rock star's 76th birthday.
After performing a string of the Elvis hits in front of thousands of fans, Mr Burton asked Mr Cawthray's wife to share a nightcap in his room at the Hilton Metropole.
When Cawthray found Mr Burton stripped to the waist talking to his wife he feared the worst.
Cawthray was given a 12 week prison sentenced, suspended for 12 months at Warwick Crown Court and ordered to pay fines and compensation totalling £2,020.

Elvis featured on 'Hawaii Five-0' Season Finale: The season finale of the CBS hit series "Hawaii Five-0" paid homage to the King of Rock 'n' Roll! The episode opened with Danny, played by actor Scott Caan, lying in bed and watching Elvis Presley's 1961 movie "Blue Hawaii." Danny is quick to point out the king's flawless style! "Look at that suit," he says to his ex-wife. "White shirt, white pants and a red lei. Two people on this earth could pull that off and I'm the other one."
- Over 10 million people watched the episode.
As EIN previously reported, this is a inside joke since Scott Caan is the son of Elvis' old girlfriend Sheila Ryan, who married actor James Caan soon after she and Elvis separated.

'Elvis In Concert' 2012, Possible WORLD Tour: The 'Elvis In Concert' 2012 Tour may be a lot bigger than we've been told so far. According to the Times Record News, the Stamps (that's Ed Enoch and four new members, Jerry Kelso, Michael Means, Roger Robinson and Chad Riley) will be the male backing vocals. Also, Times Record News, whose journalists spoke with Ed Enoch, indicates that the 2012 Tour will be traveling to Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and Hawaii.
From the Times Record News Website: The Stamps these days are led by Ed Enoch, the only remaining member of the group who toured with Elvis in the '70s. The King invited the quartet to tour with him in 1971, and they were a regular fixture at his live concerts until his death in 1977.

The band members often would go to The King's hotel suite after performing a concert, where they'd sing gospel music with him. The Stamps also contributed vocals to many of his studio recordings between 1972 and 1977.
It was during this time that the gospel group also released one of its most critically acclaimed double albums, "Live at Murray State." The Stamps Gospel Quartet is a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and is a multiple Grammy and Dove Award-winning group.
Ed Enoch joined The Stamps as a baritone in 1969 and later became lead vocalist and road manager. "I will never forget Elvis as a wonderful, talented, kind and compassionate friend," Enoch has said.
Besides working with Elvis, Enoch, as part of The Stamps, has sung for Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson and Ricky Skaggs, to name a few. He and the rest of the group — that's Jerry Kelso, Michael Means, Roger Robinson and Chad Riley — are scheduled to tour Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and Hawaii in 2012 with "Elvis: The Concert."

Vegas Sahara Hotel Closes- End of an era: Las Vegas marks the end of an era this week as one of the US gambling mecca's last original "Rat Pack" casino-hotels, the Sahara, finally closes its doors.
Opened in 1952, the Sahara hosted everyone from Elvis Presley and Jerry Lewis to Frank Sinatra and the Beatles in the 1950s and 60s, and their photos still decorate the walls above the reception. But in recent decades Vegas saw an explosion of mega-sized casino resorts which left the "small" Sahara struggling to fill its 1,700 rooms.
The death knell was sounded in March, when its owners since 2007, SBE Entertainment, announced that the casino-hotel complex with its more than 1,050 staff was no longer a viable business.
"But you know, I've been in this business for 50 years, time's up," Dennis Carade, a front desk clerk said, recounting anecdotes about Elvis and Clint Eastwood -- who made "The Gauntlet" here in 1977.
In the 1950s the "Rat Pack," a group of actors led by Sinatra but also including Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., appeared in numerous Vegas shows and several films, including the original "Ocean's Eleven."
Elvis Presley stayed at The Sahara on several occasions, most notably during the filming of "Viva Las Vegas" in 1963. He reportedly stayed in the Presidential Suite during the filming with co-star and love interest, Ann-Margret.

'Change Of Habit' Very Rare promotional Item: From the Rare-Elvis website, probably the rarest piece of Elvis Presley movie promotion in Germany. What a sensational image of Mary Tyler Moore and Elvis! It was made in 1969 by Universal to promote Change Of Habit during the 69/70 season under the german title Asphalt Melodie. The fold-out sheet (91/2 x 13”) is so rare, because the movie never made it to the theatres at that time. It was first seen 1985 in Germany on television under a different title. The reason why the movie was dropped by Universal is, that at the same time, a similar german movie was played at the theatres. What a shame. Universal never published any promotion material for Change Of Habit in Germany, but instead they shredded all the prints and only a few copies survived. The beautiful painting continues on the last page. Page 2 and 3 feature press informations, where they say Elvis plays an author! Four-page sheet.

Sam Thompson, Elvis' bodyguard, 2011 Interview: Sam Thompson first met Elvis in November 1972. At the time Elvis was dating Sam's sister Linda Thompson. As an officer with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, Elvis and Sam became fast friends. In July 1973, Elvis purchased a home for Sam less than a mile from the gates of Graceland. Sam travelled with Elvis on the road tours from 1972 until 1976 as Elvis' friend and companion. In July 1976, Sam went to work full time for Elvis, as his personal bodyguard and tour advance man, providing security for Elvis at Graceland, his other homes in California and on all the road tours, including hotel and airport security.

Elvis Gladiator, Al Holcome Has Died: Essential Elvis reports>> The Elvis world has just lost another true gent. Al Holcome, one of Elvis’ original Gladiators just passed away in Memphis. Big Al, or Mr. Bear as he he was known, had the biggest hands I had ever seen! He was a guest at our Gladiator reunion at the old Tennessee Karate Institute during EW10, but was unable to make the stairs. Incredibly, he came and spent some time greeting fans outside the building. I’m honoured to have known him, and I thank Master Wayne Carman and his wife Susan for introducing me to Al all those years ago. Our thoughts are with Al’s wife, Lisa, and the Holcome family.

More ELVIS on American Idol: "American Idol" top three finalist Lauren Alaina kicked things into high gear this week with her cover of Elvis Presley's 1958 hit "Trouble." The song was penned by acclaimed songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This week's episode was a tribute to them, with all of the Idols getting to chose a song from their repertoire. "Trouble" was featured in Elvis' 1958 movie "King Creole."
Lauren, a Georgia native, drew rave reviews from the judges for her performance of the king's hit! Jennifer Lopez told her, "I saw a quality in you when you came out that I had not seen in you before. It was like total attack and it was really, really good."

Memphis Area Flood - Not So Bad as reported!: The Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau has issued the following letter in an effort to set the record straight about the high water situation in Memphis. Please read for a better understanding of how the Memphis community has really been affected, and again, we thank you for all of your concerns!
"We've been tracking river levels very closely and, with the Mississippi River having crested yesterday, water levels have begun to recede. We will see a slow but sure return to normalcy in the coming weeks. We have watched, amazed, at national media coverage of this event. Just to set the record straight, 98% of our community is dry, water-free and open for business. Inundating national news reporters with these facts has not tempered the headlines.
Here are the facts:
• Fewer than 1% of Memphis households have been affected by rising waters and less than 20% of the City's land area. Most affected are outlying communities, where some residences have been built in flood plains of the Mississippi's tributary rivers. |

In downtown Memphis, water has lapped into three of our parks. It has encroached over Riverside Drive and pooled at the west end of Beale Street. This pool of water – depicted so ominously on national news – actually is sitting at the base of a long slope, four blocks west and well below Beale Street Entertainment District. Located on a bluff that is 30 feet higher than the river's crest, Beale, FedEx Forum and our major downtown hotels are all open and operating at capacity. The airport and our conference and convention facilities are operating at capacity. Restaurant and attractions are ready for visitors ... and the weather is perfect!

Memphis Floods, but Graceland OK: The Mississippi River is expected to reach 48 feet, its highest level since 1937. Graceland, Beale Street and other landmarks are safe, officials say. Memphis braced for the rain-swollen Mississippi River to reach its highest level in more than 70 years by Tuesday, marking what officials hope will be a turning point in the fight against a slow-motion disaster that has flooded low-lying homes and farmland and sent hundreds of residents to emergency shelters.
The Tennessee city's musical landmarks — including Beale Street, Sun Studio and Graceland — should be spared, officials said.
By 6 p.m. Monday, the great river had reached 47.8 feet at Memphis, just under the expected crest of 48 feet. The record is 48.7 feet, set in 1937 — a historic flood that killed 500 people in several states and inundated 20 million acres of land. Memphis Mayor emphasized that city landmarks were safe on higher ground. |

That included two Elvis Presley shrines: Sun Studio, where the king of rock 'n' roll made his early recordings, and Graceland, his former estate several miles south of downtown.

CKX sells out to Apollo Global Management: Robert Sillerman's dream collapsed this week when the New York-based company that owns the Graceland operation and the rights to the name and image of Elvis Presley, as well as other entertainment companies, was sold for about $511 million in cash.
A private-equity group led by Apollo Global Management announced Tuesday that it is buying CKx, which operates Graceland, Presley's iconic Memphis home, and has proprietary rights to the "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance" brands.
This isn't the first time an Apollo deal touched Memphis. Five years ago, it bought then-Memphis-based Harrah's Entertainment and a unit of International Paper.
The CKx board and The Promenade Trust, a group that benefits Lisa Marie Presley and is the company's partner managing the Elvis Presley name, support the deal, as does Robert F.X. Sillerman, the company's largest shareholder with a nearly 21 percent stake.
A cash tender offer is expected to start soon and expire in 20 days.

It was unclear Tuesday what consequence the deal may have for Graceland, Elvis Presley Enterprises and Memphis.
It's conceivable that Apollo would be better positioned to carry out a $250 million plan by CKx -- announced in 2007 but mothballed -- to expand Graceland's visitor center and add shops, attractions and a new hotel.
"We're certainly hoping they will take a good, hard look and listen to experts that run Elvis Presley Enterprises locally," Kane said, "and continue on with some of the enhancements we think will take Graceland to the next level.
"The goal is: How do we get Graceland to go from 650,000-700,000 to over 1 million visitors a year? How do we invest to get a return on annual basis of 30 percent in added visitors?"
EPE already has invested money in property acquisition and demolition of old apartment complexes.
"I can almost assure you they are going to continue down the path considering all the work that's been put in it thus far," City Councilman Harold Collins said.
Whatever happens with Graceland, the city will pursue a $45 million improvement of a 2.5-mile section of Elvis Presley Boulevard stretching from Brooks Road to Shelby Drive, Collins said. The project would include $1.8 million from the city and the rest in federal and state money.
But the deal brings to an end one-time radio and concert mogul Robert F.X. Sillerman's dream of creating an entertainment power built on the licensing rights of the baby boom's cultural icons. (Above, Sillerman with Priscilla) At one point he even hoped to land rights to The Beatles. CKX caught everyone's attention in 2005 when Sillerman bought Idol creator Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment. CKX also owns the firm that manages Woody Allen, Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. Sillerman had to be taken seriously: A pal of Mel Brooks and co-investor in his Broadway production of The Producers, Sillerman became a billionaire in the 1990s after collecting and selling the network of concert venues that now forms the core of Live Nation. But Sillerman's plans for CKX fell apart after he invested in Las Vegas property with the idea of creating an Elvis Presley-themed casino, just before the real estate market collapsed. He left the company last year but remains a major shareholder. CKX shares, which traded for as much as $29 in 2005, closed yesterday at $4.45. Sillerman and Lisa Marie Presley, also a major CKX shareholder, have agreed to the sale.
Revenue fell 20 percent to $53.3 million from $66.6 million, last year.

Dolores Fuller, Elvis song-writer, dies at 88: Composer Dolores Fuller, who starred with Ed Wood in the cult classic "Glen or Glenda," died Monday of complications from a stroke. She was 88.
Fuller, who was also a lyricist who penned the words to a number of songs performed by Elvis Presley in his films, was romantically involved with Wood, often described as the world's worst director. She also appeared in Wood's 1954 pic "Jail Bait" and 1955 film "Bride of the Monster."
After her relationship with Wood ended a couple of years later, she studied with Stella Adler at the Actors Studio in New York. Fuller also worked as a songwriter. Her credits include "Rock-a-Hula Baby" (with Benjamin Weisman and Fred Wise), from the 1961 Presley pic "Blue Hawaii," and "Do the Clam" (with Weisman and Sid Wayne), from "Girl Happy." She also co-wrote "Someone to Tell It To," recorded by Nat King Cole, and "Losers Weepers," which Peggy Lee recorded.
Fuller also served as a talent manager.
The publicity generated around the release of the 1994 Tim Burton biopic "Ed Wood" brought some attention to Fuller as Wood himself had died in 1978. Sarah Jessica Parker played Fuller in that film, with Johnny Depp as the irrepressibly strange Wood.

'Elvis At Madison Square Garden' An In-Depth Report: Elvis' June 1972 concerts in Madison Square Garden were a key part of his stunning career. Only days after the first concert RCA rush-released the album 'Elvis: ‘At Madison Square Garden’. 'The Elvis Files Volume 4' UPDATE: Originally set for publication in May 2011 and focussing on the five years 1965-1969 author Erik Lorentzen has discovered way more material and new photographs than could be squeezed into a 600 page book. Therefore the timeframe of Volume Four of The Elvis Files has now shifted to cover January 1965 to December 1968. Due to the new discoveries the book is still being worked on but it will still be over 500 pages and with more than 1000 of the finest photos and archival materials from the time. There will now be seven volumes of The Elvis Files.
The publication date is now August 16th 2011.

Esquire names Elvis as One of the 50 Most Stylish Male Musicians: The King of Rock 'n' Roll also had a knack for fashion! Esquire Magazine has named Elvis Presley one of the 50 most stylish male musicians of the last 50 years. The order of the list is somewhat strange with Serge Gainsbourg, Pete Doherty (what?) and The Beastie Boys listed before Elvis?!
Other artists listed in the poll include David Bowie, the Beastie Boys, Miles Davis and Mick Jagger.
Esquire notes that "The King was comfortable in stripes-over-stripes. Automatic pass."

Graceland is Open despite Southern US Floods! Although there are some areas around Memphis that are experiencing flooding, Graceland is dry and not affected by the floods. Springtime is a great time to visit Memphis, with sunny, warm weather and lots of fun events happening throughout the city. If you are planning a trip to Memphis in the next few weeks, due to some high water, you may want to check road conditions before heading this way.
The Coast Guard closed a section of the swollen Mississippi to barge traffic to protect a Missouri town from floodwaters last Friday as police in Memphis went door to door urging residents to leave nearly 1,000 homes that could be swamped by the mighty river. Some Memphis homes were in water (see right)
Graceland however is on higher ground.

'Always On My Mind' on American Idol: Elvis was back in the building during last night's US episode of "American Idol."
Season 10 standout and final five contestant Scott McCreery once again turned to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, singing Elvis Presley's 1972 hit 'Always On My Mind'. Judge Steven Tyler called it "beautiful."

Don’t be blue, Elvis, but Jacob is now the king: In 1957, the song “Jailhouse Rock” was No. 1. That was the peak year for naming your baby boy “Elvis.” But the name has gone the way of the 45 rpm record.
“Elvis” is out. No longer among the top 1,000 names — for the first time since 1956.
According to data released Thursday by the US Social Security Administration, “Jacob,” after 12 years, is still at the top of the charts for popular boy baby names.
Nearly 22,000 US boys were tagged such in 2010, followed by Ethan, Michael, Jayden and William. About 23,000 girls were named Isabella (No. 1 last year, too), followed by Sophia, Emma, Olivia and Ava.
Truthfully, “Elvis” peaked in 1957 at no higher that No. 312.
On Thursday, area hospitals could find no recent newborns named Elvis. Nor could pediatric nurses remember any.
The last live concert by Elvis Presley in Kansas City was 1977, but we’ve had brushes with several Elvi since then, including Elvis Grbac, quarterback for the Chiefs.

their daughter “Elvis.” No, they were not Elvis Presley fans, the mother said.
But Sweden’s National Tax Board — which has the authority to veto baby names — decreed that Elvis was a first name of a masculine type, “clearly inappropriate as a first name for a woman.”
Still a popular choice among cat and dog owners, Elvis ranks 123rd and 191st, respectively. (No breakdown on how many hound dogs bear the name.)

'Spanish Eyes By Request' GRM CD Review: On May 16th 1974 Elvis kicked off his 22-concert season at the Sahara Tahoe hotel, his third season at Lake Tahoe. The excellent quality soundboard tape of Elvis' May 24, 1974 Midnight Show was originally released 15 years ago by Fort Baxter. Celebrating Linda Thompson's birthday Elvis was on fine form and sang a personal request for "Spanish Eyes" not something he did too often. The overall set-list was also a good selection, with a fine variety of new songs.
Now the performance has been re-issued by Gravel Road Music with corrected speed, improved sound and in a super-deluxe package.

He wanted one of the guys with him at all times because he was used to people getting him whatever he wanted. He thought, "I'm wealthy, let other people do it." McQueen biopic gives 'Sgt. Presley' a major promotion: Elvis biographer Marshall Terrill will make his big screen debut with a Steve McQueen biopic and hopes producers will give "The King" the royal treatment for his next screen adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter announced on April 28 that two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker and The Town) has formed a production company, The Combine, and will play Steve McQueen in an upcoming biopic.
"I'm absolutely thrilled because this has been 20 years in the making," said Terrill, who has written three books on Presley. "Renner is perfect as McQueen and is probably the hottest star on the planet right now."
Writer-director James Gray, who wrote and directed We Own the Night and Two Lovers, is attached to write the McQueen screenplay, which will be based on the two books by Marshall Terrill: Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel (1993) and Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon (2010).
Renner will produce the McQueen project with Academy Award-winning Hurt Locker producer Greg Shapiro, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver (one of the producers of Black Swan), and Zacharias’ producing partner Nick Landon.
Terrill says this latest development gives Sgt. Presley, a book he co-authored with Rex and Elisabeth Mansfield about Presley’s stint in the Army, a major boost.

screen," Terrill said. "This movie is about about the forces of friendship, duty, passion, deception and love, and is the next Elvis movie that should get made."
Terrill is the author of 15 books and three of his other works are in development to be made into movies. His next project is an oral biography, photo album and documentary on rock and roll roadies. He hopes to include a section on Presley.

Donny Osmond Talks about Meeting Elvis in New Interview: In a new interview with Nashville.com, actor and musician Donny Osmond talks about the superstars he's met throughout his career - and that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll!
"Elvis walked into my dressing room in Las Vegas because he came to see our show" says Donny. "He really talked like this too: (Donny does an Elvis impression) 'Hi, I'm Elvis.' He invited us to come over to his house to have a barbeque, but we never did. We never took him up on the offer. He was a real humble guy. He really affected me a lot. I was starstruck with him."
Donny says he's also in awe of Stevie Wonder.

'Elvis Is Back!' Legacy Edition review: ‘Elvis Is Back!’ the album that Elvis Presley recorded in Nashville in March and April 1960 is widely regarded as one of the best and most important albums he ever made. A half-century later, "Elvis Is Back" is now coupled with 1961’s "Something For Everybody," an album he recorded back in Nashville one year later. Along with one dozen hit single sides also recorded in Nashville’s famous Studio B and which charted over roughly the same period of time.

Love Me Tender actor William Campbell dies: William Campbell who appeared in Elvis Presley's first film 'Love Me Tender' as well as the TV series 'Star Trek' and in the 1950s was married to Judith Campbell Exner, who went on to have an affair with President Kennedy, died last Thursday. He was 87.
He was a busy film and television actor in the 1950s and '60s, making his film debut in 1950's "The Breaking Point" and singing with Presley in 1956's "Love Me Tender." Other film roles included 1954's "The High and the Mighty" and "The Naked and the Dead" in 1958.
Campbell had roles in "Star Trek" episodes during each of the original show's first two seasons, including playing a Klingon warrior in the second-season episode "The Trouble With Tribbles." He returned to the role in a 1994 episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
He served in the Pacific with the Navy during World War II. |

Campbell met Judith Exner in 1952 at a party when she belonged to "the young Hollywood set," he told The Times in 1975. They married that year and divorced in 1958. She died in 1999.
Exner said that her relationship with Kennedy was of a "close, personal nature" and that she also had a personal relationship with mafia figure Sam Giancana.
"What mutual friends we had you could count on one hand," Campbell said of his former wife in a 1975 Times article. "How she ever met the president, I don't know."
Campbell spent many years during and after his acting career working with the Motion Picture & Television Fund, including as its chief fundraiser. Campbell is survived by his wife, Tereza, whom he married in 1963.

Elvis and Priscilla's Wedding 44 years ago today: Elvis Presley and Priscilla Ann Beaulieu were married on May 1 1967 at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Priscilla has noted that being called "Mrs Elvis Presley" sounded better than other labels like live-in-Lolita that had been given to her by some of the press. After the wedding ceremony they flew in Frank Sinatra's private jet flew to Elvis' Palm Springs home.
Elvis then carried his new bride across the threshold singing 'The Hawaiian Wedding Song'.
Nine months later to the day Lisa Marie was born.

Glen Campbell To Retire: Legendary country star Glen Campbell and friend of Elvis, is finally hanging up his guitar - he plans to retire after releasing a swansong album this year. The veteran Grammy-winning singer/songwriter, 75, has been working in the music industry since the early 1950s and has enjoyed a varied career.
Working with Elvis as far back as the Viva Las Vegas sessions, Campbell was a member of Phil Spector's infamous band of studio musicians before going on to enjoy a successful solo career.
The Rhinestone Cowboy hitmaker has recorded more than 50 albums - but his upcoming release, Ghost On A Canvas, is likely to be his last. Campbell tells Mojo magazine, "Most people are retired at 60. And I'm slowing down. I've slowed down, I'll put it that way."
Campbell has said he thinks often of Elvis.
"He's with me all the time," Campbell said. "I'll see stuff and it'll remind me of him. He was really, really a nice guy. I knew Elvis when he came in through Albuquerque, and that's where I was at the time playing in my uncle's band. |

'Elvis On Tour - November 1971' new book?: Reported by elv75.com, a new book on Elvis in 1971. According to the Ebay seller it was published earlier this year and limited to just 150 copies. The 150 pages book contains over 200 amateur and professional photographs (many never before published) of Elvis on stage, official tour documents, diary extracts and interviews with fans who attended the shows, this is the definitive story of what is considered Elvis' greatest tour.
"With countless other images of rare ads, ticket stubs, seating charts and memorabilia, plus fascinating stories from the fans who were there (including the most detailed story of Elvis' concert in Kansas City that has ever been published) this is a must have book for the concert aficionado" according to the information from the seller.

Budapest Names Small Park After Elvis Presley: Budapest's city council has approved a plan to name a small park after Elvis Presley in commemoration of The King's support for Hungary's anti-Soviet revolution of 1956.
Budapest mayor Istvan Tarlos said Wednesday that a plot near the Margaret Bridge will be called Elvis Presley Park to honour the singer's "sincere sympathy" toward the short-lived uprising.
On Jan. 6, 1957, during his last appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Elvis sang a gospel standard, "Peace in the Valley," which Sullivan said reflected the singer's concern for Hungarians' plight after the uprising. Sullivan said Elvis wanted people to make donations to be sent to Hungary.
The site in Buda, separated from Pest by the Danube River, was chosen in voting held last month on the city website.

Elvis' Birthplace in Tupelo, new expansion details: New details about an exciting expansion project at Elvis Presley's Birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi. The 10,000 square-foot addition will include an event center, a 135-seat theatre, a snack bar, and a large hall for receptions and public events. New restrooms will be added to the new structure, and guests can relax in comfort in two new patios.
The $4.6 million project is being partially funded by the Mississippi Legislature, with matching funds from the City of Tupelo, the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation, the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Carpenter Foundation. Construction on the expansion project is set to begin this spring.
Each year, around 80,000 visitors come to Tupelo to see Elvis Presley's Birthplace. Nearly half of those visitors are international fans.

'You'll Never Walk Alone' New CD: In a couple of days, Straight Arrow will release a new CD called 'You'll Never Walk Alone' (SA 2011-20-02). It will feature Elvis' famous July 19th, 1975 8:30 pm show from Uniondale, NY.
17 years ago, Claudia label released this show in slightly incomplete form, using an unknown generation tape copy of the original recording. Straight Arrow managed to obtain the original (mono) tape directly from person who recorded it. No edits - and in the best possible sound! The title-song in particular sounds stunning: a truly goosebump-inducing performance in the best soundquality possible!
As most of die-hard fans know, Elvis' July 1975 tour was one of his best. No need to go into big details. His evening Uniondale concert was of the highest quality - a rockin' setlist, rare songs, great mood and brilliant vocal work.
