Jim Curtin Passed Away:  It is with great sadness that I must report that Jim E. Curtin, Elvis impersonator and collector supreme, passed away this past weekend. I received the sad news from my oldest friend in the Elvis world Paul Dowling this morning.  Paul and I were just young pups when we first met Jim (the original Elvis freak).  His knowledge of everything Elvis was astounding and, in fact, I learned much from him about the world of Elvis records. At one point Jim Curtin (shown right with Elvis) presented Elvis with a black Gibson acoustic guitar with "EP" in the neck and Elvis gave him a jumpsuit to thank him. Jim Curtin's huge Elvis collection included 3 jumpsuits and thousands of unique pictures. The majority of his collection has been noticed when it was auctioned off. Jim wasn't very active in the Elvis world in recent years but his contributions to the world of Elvis collecting will not be forgotten. Jim produced a number of good books including Christmas With Elvis; Unseen Elvis: Candids of the King; Elvis The Early Years; Elvis and the Stars and The Elvis Scrapbook.
May God Bless his soul. - Paul Lichter

Wanda Jackson credits Elvis for foundation of her career: Wanda Jackson, now 73, is still touring and has had her recent CD produced by Jack White of the White Stripes
"I haven't quit working," Jackson said during a recent phone interview in advance of her Summerfest show. "I did take some time off for one year, but I had to get back on the road, because life at home was destroying me. So much of what I've recorded was in Europe, and I'd also been in gospel music. It was a very rewarding time for me."
Nevertheless, her return to larger infamy is a result of her return to rockabilly - and of the encouragement of Jack White, whose work with the White Stripes and elsewhere has often shown the influence of the '50s. Jackson and White first discussed collaborating when Jackson was considering a duets album. On the advice of a friend of her publicist, she got in touch with White.
The resulting album, "The Party Ain't Over," came out early this year, and it pairs Jackson's distinctive high-pitched growl to songs as varied as Jimmie Rodgers' "Blue Yodel #6," to Amy Winehouse's "You Know That I'm No Good."
"The Party Ain't Over" is meant to return Jackson to her rockabilly glory, and even its title is a nod to her biggest hit in that realm, "Let's Have a Party." And White couldn't have been unaware that Elvis Presley had also recorded that song, or that Presley and Jackson toured together in 1955 and '56.
"Elvis was so playful and had so much fun onstage," Jackson said of Presley. "I remembered that that's what I needed to do. I caused everybody to have a good time, and I learned that from Elvis."
Presley was also the one who encouraged her to become, for all intents and purposes, the first female rock 'n' roll singer.
"I told him I couldn't sing that kind of music," Jackson said. "He said, 'Well, I think you can, and if your ambition is to become a big name, you need to start doing that.' That encouragement and wisdom he gave me was valuable. I'm still enjoying the fruits of my labor back then."
Elvis fans should consider what a potential classic album could have been recorded in 2011 with Elvis Presley & producer Jack White at the helm - a real shame the King left the building way too early. .

Cowboy Jack Clement's Home Damaged in Fire: Wearing his Elvis-print pajamas, musician and Sun Studio's engineer, Cowboy Jack Clement watched as 40 firefighters hosed down his house Saturday afternoon for more than an hour—the result of an undetermined fire.
Clement’s Tennessee home has been the site of legendary recordings, including those of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and John Prine. In his 30-year-old studio, the producer stored master tapes of these recordings, as well as other memorabilia that was lost in the fire.
However, Clement’s girlfriend, friends and three cats managed to escape the fire. He also was able to retrieve his "baby"—a Gibson J200 he purchased in 1951 while in the Marines. The guitar reportedly was scratched by Elvis Presley’s belt buckle.
"That guitar means more to me than the house," Clement told The Tennessean.

Clement has worked with rock ‘n’ roll legends Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, as well as many others. He’s produced tracks for U2 and Louis Armstrong.
The 80-year-old producer bought the house 1970.

June 26th Elvis Anniversary - Can it really be 34 years ago?: June 26th is a major anniversary in the life of Elvis Presley and his legacy. Not only does the date celebrate the birthday of Elvis manager 'Col' Tom Parker - but also the death of Vernon Presley, Elvis' father, in 1979.
On June 26, 1977 Elvis performed on stage in Indianapolis Market Square Garden for the very last time.
The local newspaper The Indianapolis Star reported:

18,000 enthusiastic, sweaty-palmed fans at Market Square Arena prepared to greet royalty-the hip-swivelling singer who has been called the King of rock 'n' roll since the Mid-1950s.
Elvis. His name was everywhere: on posters, buttons, souvenir books, T-shirts, hats, and homemade clothes that proclaimed with personal touches, admiration for a man idolised by millions.
Elvis appeared, in a gold and white jumpsuit and white boots, bounding onstage with energy that was a relief to everyone. At 42, Elvis is still carrying around some excess baggage on his mid-section, but it didn't stop him from giving a performance in true Presley style.
His opening number, the audience-grabbing 'C.C. Rider', got his portion of the show off to a flash-bulb-popping, hand-clapping start. His 'Amen', in which he encouraged everyone to lap and sing along, seemed to bring everyone together, as did 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'I got a woman.'
His older numbers seemed to draw more applause, although just about everything he did created mass hysteria, especially his "leg jerks."
One of his best numbers, we feel, was 'It's Now Or Never', followed by a medley of his hits. He also offered 'This Time You Gave Me A Mountain',
and 'Fairytale', plus several others. He also did his famous "I uh, well, well, well, well, well, well" monologue, which seems to turn dyed-in-the-roots Elvis fans on. They coveted scarves, tossed into the audience after gracing the singer's neck, caused mad scrambles by the stage as he got rid of them just about as fast as they were put around his neck. The fans were well-behaved, considering the usual stampedes that take place at rock concerts.
The packed Arena was indication enough that Elvis is still as popular as ever. Well, well, well, well.- The Indianapolis Star
Elvis would never perform on stage again - Long Live The King.

Michael Jackson the second Anniversary: Saturday marked the second anniversary of the tragic death of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. Fans came from all parts of the US, from Europe, Australia and Japan, to remember their idol but in surprising low numbers compared to the well-marketed sales of his legacy.
At Jackson's final resting place at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, Los Angeles, there were only a few hundred fans who filed past barricades to get close to the mausoleum where Jackson is interred.
Compared to the sometimes 70,000 fans that attend the Memphis commemoration of Elvis Presley's death some 30 years after his passing, what does it say for the enduring legacy of Jackson's music. Will Michael Jackson's impact on popular culture fade faster than any Epic/Sony marketing man feared. Surprisingly Jackson's first posthumous album of original material 'Michael' also failed to make Number 1 in the charts.
Michael Jackson died in his LA home on June 25, 2009, while rehearsing for an
ambitious concert tour. The cause of death is deemed an overdose of painkillers, but details remain unclear.
The trial against the singer's personal physician, Doctor Conrad Murray is ongoing. Murray insists he is innocent and rejects the charges of unpremeditated murder.
Jackson's first wife Lisa Marie Presley is reported to have said in a recent interview that the singer was afraid for his life and believed he might be killed so that certain individuals can profiteer from his songs.
Rihanna and Usher were among the stars who gave emotional tributes to late superstar Michael Jackson on the second anniversary of his death.

Sonny West Health Update: Sandy Pichon has sent us the following upon visiting Sonny West in hospital.. When we arrived we were distressed to see him. His color was gray, he had many cuts and abrasions and bruises and his hands, feet and legs were very swollen. His spleen was lacerated and his heart was not functioning normally. He is on oxygen and was in a lot of pain. Sonny had blood clots in his lungs (pulmonary emboli) and in his legs. It was urgent that a Vena Cava Filter be put in place to prevent more clots from entering his lungs or his heart. We prayed with him, consent forms were signed and he was taken down. The procedure was performed immediately and his color began to improve. We were able to talk with him more until he asked for more pain meds. He is not out of the woods yet. The dr is unable to put him on blood thinner due to the spleen as a spleen bleed could be fatal, as could the clots. The dr said that the fall actually saved his life as they believe the clots were there before the fall and had he not been brought to the hospital he would have died. Sonny asked me to thank you for your prayers and that you continue to lift him up until he is completely healed. He is anxious to get back to work on his movie Fame and Fortune. He is too sick to receive visitors, but if you would like to send a card to Sonny, you can send it to me at PO Box 161052, Memphis TN 38186. I plan to go back to Nashville soon as I promised Judy I would certainly be there for them when they need me. This is a very difficult time and I ask that you all please continue your prayers. I will update you as his condition progresses. - Sandi Pichon.

Greatest Rock Concert Poster of All Time: Andrew Hawley an avid vintage rock concert poster collector believes the greatest rock concert poster was printed by Hatch Show Print for the 1956 Elvis Presley tour. He bought the only know existing original of the Elvis Jacksonville, Florida concert poster from Jordanaires member - Gordon Stoker.
How Hawley acquired the Jacksonville Elvis concert poster started when Gordon Stoker, the tenor and manager for the renowned singing group Jordanaires, noticed the Elvis concert poster nailed to a tree when driving to a rehearsal before the Jacksonville show in 1956. Stoker saw that the name of his vocal group was misspelt with two "o’s" instead of one. He stopped the car and took the poster from the tree. He folded it and placed it under his car seat. Twenty-one years later the poster resurfaced. Hawley got wind that one of the Jordanaires had a 1956 Elvis concert poster. He contacted Ray Walker a Jordanaire member who mentioned that Stoker had it. After much effort to meet Gordon Stoker, Hawley met him in Nashville at a recording studio and acquired the poster.
According to Hawley, "The Hatch Show Print Elvis Presley concert posters for
1956 tour are the greatest rock poster of all time. The big red block lettering on white background is stunning on this large 22 by 28 inch concert poster. It is striking because of its size, use of bold bright colors, and images on a white background. The gigantic image of Elvis on the poster is called "the tonsil shot". Many people claim they took this picture of Elvis. It was taken in Tampa, Florida in the summer of 1955."
Hawley continues, "Hatch printed the concert posters in Nashville, Tennessee and shipped them to Jacksonville and other venues by Greyhound Bus. Elvis did a string of shows in Florida in August of 1956 and posters looked exactly alike, but different venue information was printed on the tour blanks depending on where he was playing."
This poster can be viewed here.
Hawley will pay $25,000 for original vintage 1956 Elvis Presley concert posters.

'Why ELVIS Left The Building' - Book Review: Being republished now is one of the worst-ever books about Elvis - full of lies and totally denigrating our man.
"Elvis had rotten green and yellow teeth" and "Elvis was the Forrest Gump of the Lauderdale Courts" are just some of the ridiculous claims by Jimmy Denson from whom the material for this book is sourced.
The book promotion is misleadingly positive, stating .. "In this phenomenal book written by Heart Lanier Shapré, amazingly, seven lost years of the King’s childhood are revealed. Learn the foundations of what shaped this mega star’s life. Of all the entertainers who have influenced pop culture over the past 50 years, Elvis Presley stands at the top. His influence can be felt in music, film, fashion, and in the emotions of all the lives he has touched around the world." (see publicity news item below).
EIN presents its original 2006 review of this book from Nigel Patterson - who has read some terrible books in his time - but says this is worse than the Albert Goldman fiasco. - Go here to reveal all.

'Elvis - Live At The International' - New book: By author Kieran Davis the book tells the full story of Elvis' time at the International Hotel from August 1969 to September 1971. This book contains ~150 pages describing in meticulous detail exactly what it was like to see Elvis at the International. Taken from the diaries of super fan Peggy Elzea, the chapters describe meeting Elvis backstage, the shows, the hotel, the staff, the food, even the call girls. There are sections of tape transcripts, jumpsuit descriptions, photographs of memorabilia, the hotel's advertising campaign, the list goes on. If you ever wanted to know how Elvis chipped his tooth on stage in 1971 even that is in here. With over 100,000 words, there will never be a better chance to read about Elvis' first five engagements in Vegas as seen through the eyes of a fan who was there. Peggy wrote her memories down forty years ago and so they are as honest and fresh as if it all just happened yesterday. There has never been a book like this.
This hard cover A4/letter sized book will be available soon
EIN notes that 'Elvis On Tour November 1971' also by Kieran Davis is one of the best Elvis books recently released - A detailed EIN review will be published soon.

Sonny West In Hospital: Sonny West, co-author of the August 1977 gossip book "Elvis What Happened?!" and a sometimes persona non-grata at Elvis events, took a fall off his daughter's porch. The circumstances are not clear, but apparently the man broke 3 ribs and also has some cuts, abrasions and bruises. He is in the hospital recovering.

Elvis Voted 3rd in NME Poll: A disappointment, but perhaps not a surprise when Michael Jackson was voted #1 in UK magazine NME's poll of the 'Greatest Singers Of All Time'. Freddie Mercury came second, with ELVIS coming third. NME.com states that 10 million votes were cast and there were 4000 Facebook comments.
EIN suspects that this poll reflects the number of their fans active on the Internet.
Several EIN members asked us why the NME scores did not change over several days, yet the site said they were updated every 30 minutes.
EIN wrote to NME but got no answer.
Of course Freddie Mercury would certainly be an NME reader favourite - and Jackson the most publicised performer of late. Thank God Justin Bieber didn't win!
EIN contributor Brian Quinn in the UK comments.. I concur with the observations of those who voted in the NME Poll. Votes for Elvis were going fine on some days but as soon as they started to increase faster than those of Jackson or Mercury they suddenly halted. Another interesting observation was that Mercury's vote never moved for the last week of the poll. It looks as though the vast majority of votes for Mercury and Jackson occurred before the Elvis fans got wind of the poll. I suspect the NME did not want Elvis to win as he does not fit into their 'purchasing' demographics. There is no way that Elvis fans are going to take out subscriptions to the NME!

'Why ELVIS Left The Building' New Re-publish: The publicity states .. Before there was Michael Jackson and The Beatles, there was Elvis. Of all the entertainers who have influenced pop culture over the past 50 years, Elvis Presley stands at the top. His influence can be felt in music, film, fashion, and in the emotions of all the lives he has touched around the world. In this phenomenal book written by Heart Lanier Shapré, amazingly, seven lost years of the King’s childhood are revealed. Learn the foundations of what shaped this mega star’s life. 'Why ELVIS Left The Building - Revealing Seven Lost Years' explains the truth of these lost childhood years based on interviews with the book’s narrator, James Samuel Denson, who was selected by Gladys Presley to help raise her son Elvis, and on the DVD Elvis Through My Eyes. Notes the author, "The story has to be told; there was a person up there on stage beneath those costumes who had struggles, FBI involvement and is a phenomenon of life. What was the price?" To quote Elvis, "My image is one thing and the human being is another … it’s hard to live up to an image."
EIN Note – This is an update of the 2006 book. The above publicity is very misleading.EIN cannot recommend this book since it denigrates Elvis in a worse way than Albert Goldman! EIN review coming soon.

'The Essential ’77 Soundboard Collection' New Import CD: A newly announced 3-CD set from the GrooveMasters Label.
The publicity states, "Yes, It’s possible, a brand new set with really improved sound quality.
This brand new 3 cd set of 1977 soundboard recordings.
Groove masters wants to take a lead by offering you the best available sound quality to date of these recordings by mastering the groove!
Warning: If you’re used to average sound, Please, first sit down before pushing Play."
VOLUME 1, HAVING FUN IN FLORIDA
This Orlando soundboard was recorded on February 15th, 1977. Clearly, it was a good night. There’s a ‘joie de vivre’ in Elvis’ performance that was generally lacking in that final year. Particularly impressive are his astounding renditions of ‘Hurt’ and ‘My Way’. A heart-warming performance – captured in a vibrant and exciting live sound.
VOLUME 2, TROUBLE IN SAGINAW –
On May 3rd, 1977, Elvis Presley performed in Saginaw, MI for the second time on this tour. This performance was also the final night of the tour. It’s clear that Elvis is exhausted, but nevertheless he does his best to give the crowd their money’s worth. He even opens with ‘That’s All Right Mama’

instead of the usual ‘C.C. Rider’. An above-par performance from a very troubled year for Elvis.
VOLUME 3 - STUMPIN’ MADISON
This soundboard tape was recorded near the end of Elvis’ final tour, in Madison, WI on June 24th, 1977.
His regular drummer Ronnie Tutt was replaced on this night by the Sweet Inspirations drummer, Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe. And considering the fact that Jerome was asked to fill in during the soundcheck with no possibility to rehearse, he does a tremendous job: "Leave the driving to Stump!".
EIN notes that this is the second version of the Madison Concert announced this week.
GO here to EIN's review of this June 24th, 1977 concert, originally released as part of 'The Final Curtain' box-set.

Graceland expansion slated for 2012 / 2013: With the Apollo CKX takeover in progress the slated Graceland expansion has been mentioned. .. "In connection with the definitive merger agreement reached with CKX, Apollo has also obtained support agreements from two significant stockholders, The Promenade Trust, the sole beneficiary of which is Lisa Marie Presley and which is the Company's partner in EPE, and Robert F.X. Sillerman, the Company's largest stockholder. CKX will become a private company, controlled by an affiliate of Apollo, after completion of the offering.
Analyst Michael Altberg commented, "We believe potential volatility in the domestic television performance of American Idol, and the characteristic long-term decline of such shows, would have negative repercussions on revenue generated" noting that these factors are only partly offset by American Idol's current dominance of primetime audience ratings, and some degree of annual revenue visibility due to TV license fees and royalties/licensing revenue from its 85% ownership interest in Elvis Presley Enterprises. The Graceland tourist attraction, while popular, is slated for expansion capital expenditures in 2012 and 2013, and involves a risk of return on investment."

But as someone noted, "In the history of Rock and Roll, Elvis gets a chapter. Cash gets a footnote".
The race was close with one day to go - but in the end Elvis rocked through with a 64% WIN (but of course)

Rare Elvis letter to UK fan to be auctioned: A rare thank you letter from Elvis Presley, discovered by the family of a lifelong fan after her death, is to be auctioned.
The letter says: "Dear Yvonne, thank you so much for the lovely Christmas card and magazine and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Elvis Presley."
The letter, found in Bucks, is being auctioned at JP Humbert, Towcester, Northamptonshire, on 23 June.
It is estimated to sell for between £2,500 and £3,000.
Written in blue ball point pen on cream paper, the folded letter has been verified as having been written by Elvis Presley.
Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said, "The family of Yvonne, who was a lifelong Elvis fan, were clearing her estate and found this in her handbag. Bearing in mind Elvis died in the late 70s, it seems it has been in her handbag ever since. We think it's probably circa early 1960s, his writing changed through his career and it became more and more spurious, but it's authenticated by other signatures of the 1960s."
In this, the name Yvonne has been added in what appears to be Elvis' hand. It was written just before the filming of Blue Hawaii in the early 1960s, Mr Humbert said.
The auction will be filmed for the BBC series 'Antiques Roadshow' - Go here for more auction info

'Elvis As Recorded Live In Madison, MI' New Dodgy Bootleg: Recently announced is the bootleg by an "unknown import label" of the CD 'Elvis As Recorded Live in Madison, MI' containing the soundboard recording from June 24, 1977.
This is the 1977 concert which featured drummer Stump Monroe replacing Ronnie Tutt.
Copied from the now infamous 'The Final Curtain' deluxe boxset, the label doesn't realise that the concert took place in Madison Wisconsin, not Madison, Mississippi!!
As they say - "FAIL"!
A bootleg to be ignored!

Wednesday 15 June 2011 - - 2nd Update

‘Young Man With the Big Beat’ New 1956 DELUXE BoxSet 5cd Release: A new 1956 Super Deluxe 1956 boxset to be released September 27, 2011.
... "The recorded legacy of Elvis Presley continues to be discovered by new generations that never saw him or heard him perform live. It's hard to appreciate that he started so much of what we take for granted now in popular music. Until 1956, the teenagers of suburban America, and the rest of the world, had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como but everything was about to be tossed upside down. On January 28 on a cold night in New York, Elvis took America by storm as he appeared on CBS-TV's Stage Show hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. On February 4 for his second appearance he sang a song that literally changed the world of popular music "Heartbreak Hotel". Its unique sound and style literally blew everything before it away while at the same time inducing the blueprint for everything that was to come; by April, it would be #1 on Billboard. This incredible step-change in musical history resonated around the world and while liberating millions of young adolescent teenagers it also inspired many successful artists of today to pick a guitar or sing - everyone wanted to be like Elvis. The pure spontaneity of these seminal recordings
shows through even today; "Heartbreak Hotel", Don't Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "My Baby Left Me" are some of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever made. Elvis' unprecedented level of achievement is still the benchmark by which artistic success is measured today and YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT is testament to the phenomenon and cultural icon that is Elvis Presley.
- THIS SUPER DELUXE EDITION CELEBRATES 1956 in style with this retro 12x12 format and offers;
-2 CDs of RCA master recordings, digitally remastered
-1 CD of live performances including a complete UNRELEASED concert from the Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport, Louisiana;

'Fifth Time Around' new Audionics CD - OUT NOW: The legendary March 20th, 1974 Memphis, TN concert has been released on a number of occasions, beginning with RCA's original 1974 LP edit with artificial applause mixed in. In 2004, BMG's "Follow That Dream" the Elvis collectors label finally reissued this show nearly complete, in a beautiful deluxe package. But was it the definitive release? For die-hard fans it wasn't, and some viewed it as a letdown. Parts of the dialogues, introductions and even the false start of "Help Me" were omitted, and many have complained about the sound and mixing. Clearly, too much compression and artificial reverb had been applied.
Well, at long last this legendary set is now truly complete, and without the audio choices made by FTD several years ago.

This CD is OUT NOW and nearly Sold Out - Check your nearest Elvis dealer for copies. - don't miss your chance to obtain this alternate version as provided by Audionics. A decision you will not regret!

Interview with Elvis' girlfriend Marilyn Riehl from the "Million Dollar Quartet": On December 4, 1956, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins jammed together at Sun Studio in Memphis. This gathering of the young musicians on the cusp of stardom would later become known as the Million Dollar Quartet, and a hit musical would be based on their night playing together. What many people don't realize is that the quartet was actually a quintet! Marilyn Riehl, who was dating Elvis at the time, was present for that legendary jam session (see photo right). EPE recently had the chance to speak with Marilyn about her experience and what it was like to date the future King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Q) Tell us how you met Elvis.
Marilyn Riehl -  I was working at the New Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas as a dancer in the show. I was 19 at the time. Elvis was staying there after having just finished filming "Love Me Tender." The dancers and showgirls would often hang out in the coffee shop at the hotel in between shows. Elvis came in one day and sat down with us.

We were all talking and he passed me a napkin that read 'Can I have a date with you?' We dated while he was there in Las Vegas and then he asked me if I’d like to come to Memphis and meet his parents. I said yes, but I had to ask my mother. She was not too thrilled, but his mom actually called her. They talked about it for awhile and my mom finally said it was ok. I flew to Memphis and met Elvis' parents. I stayed there for several days and had a great time. It just so happened that one afternoon we were riding around on his motorcycle and stopped at Sun Studio. The whole thing evolved from there!
Q) What was Elvis like?
Marilyn Riehl - He was gorgeous, very young, very respectful, and very sweet. Just a really nice guy.
Q) What was his relationship like with his parents from what you observed?
Marilyn Riehl - He was very close to his parents, particularly his mom, who was a very pretty lady. She had beautiful facial features.
Q) Did you know anything about Sun Studio prior to when Elvis brought you there?
Marilyn Riehl - I knew nothing about Sun Studio! We were just having a great time in Memphis. People recognized him by then, but they didn’t mob him, so we could go to the gas station and he could fill up his car. He could come and pick me up from the airport. People would just say 'Hi Elvis.' It was very comfortable.

Elvis's 1964 Movie Guitar For Sale: Up for auction is this vintage Gibson LG-2 in sunburst finish with factory order number "6959 3" stamped on the neck block of the guitar and "LG-2" stamped on interior brace. The guitar features a rectangular bridge, 19 fret fingerboard with dot inlay, modern Gibson logo on headstock that has been colored over with black marker, and tapered thickness headstock. Based upon the tapered headstock that was discontinued in 1950 and available factory order number information the guitar is from 1950 or 1951.
The guitar belonged to, and was used by Elvis Presley on screen during filming of It Happened At The World's Fair (MGM, 1963). The guitar is accompanied by photos of Elvis from the film and a typed letter dated April 11, 1993, signed by Charlie Hodge. The letter states, "...The sunburst design Gibson acoustic guitar had a blue twine type strap on it...I think the studio put it on and we never changed it back. Elvis would play jam sessions during breaks in the filming and he and I both used to use it at home. It got to the point I used it more than Elvis and he eventually gave the guitar to me. I've had it ever since that time..."
The auction starts in 16 days, the expected highest bid for the instrument is 30,000.00 $US.

Alice Cooper: 'Elvis Asked Me To Put A Gun To His Head': Another media beat-up to still cash-in on the popularity of Elvis 33 years after his death. Alice Cooper has revealed that upon meeting Elvis Presley for the first time, The King handed him a pistol and told him to put the gun to his (Elvis's) head. Speaking to London's Daily Mirror, Cooper said the incident occurred in 1971, in Elvis's penthouse suite in a Las Vegas hotel.
"Elvis took me into the kitchen, opened a drawer, and pulled out a loaded pistol, telling me to put it to his head", Cooper said. "I recognized it straight away - a snub .32. I didn't know what to do. I had this gun in my hand and was expecting one of his security people to come in any second, see me holding a weapon and shoot me dead."
Cooper continued: "A little voice in my left ear was telling me, 'Go on, this is history, kill him, you'll always be the guy who killed Elvis'. In my other ear was another voice saying, 'You can't kill him, it's Elvis Presley – wound him instead, you'll only get a few years!' A fraction of a second later Elvis did a flying kick on the gun, and sent it flying, before tripping me and pinning me to the ground by my neck, announcing, 'That's how you stop a man with a gun'."
EIN notes that this is not the first time Alice Cooper has told this story. Marty Lacker has denounced this story as a Crock Of Sh*t!

Wertheimer recalls time with a young Elvis: Alfred Wertheimer photographed Elvis Presley in the year that Elvis became the world's first rock star, a TV sensation and movie star heartthrob, but it had been 55 years since his last visit to Elvis' East Memphis home on Audubon Drive.
The home, Elvis' family and his new swimming pool were a major part of the backdrop for the 1956 visit and the memories that made Wertheimer, 81, ask to revisit the home. His stopover Sunday was on his way to Memphis International Airport after talking about his work during Saturday's opening of an "Elvis at 21" exhibit at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock (see EIN story below).
That exhibit title was Elvis' age when Wertheimer encountered him in 1956. The photographer remembered his rock star subject as a pensive man in private who turned into a different personality on stage. "At home, he was basically relaxed, thinking. But his stage presence was explosive," Wertheimer said.
The New York photographer was the last one given unlimited access to Elvis before his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, took control of almost every aspect of his star's career." ...

UPDATED- EPE Challenged for Copyright Infringement: After their legal challenge against various individuals for copyright infringement, Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) find themselves now in a challenge over the same issue.
Tony Stuchbury of Elvis Presley Scrapbook was visiting the official Elvis Facebook page when he came across something he recognised. "I decided to have a browse around their photo albums only to be surprised to see one of MY photos being used in the "Graceland" photo section. No one had asked for permission to use my photograph and to be honest I was a little surprised and thought THEY, of all people, should know better".
Mr Stuchbury contacted EPE asking politely that they remove the image but after no response, he decided to go all ‘official’ himself and filed a copyright complaint with Facebook. The photo was taken in 1990. He noted, "I draw attention to the Berne Convention that automatically affords me copyright not only in the U.K. but other countries worldwide of which the USA is included".
As a result of the challenge, Facebook removed the image and have also disabled access to the entire folder which housed the photo which violated the "Statement of Rights & Responsibilities".
EPE was slower to respond, but after initial reticence that the Copyright Infringement had anything to do with EPE, Scott Williams, Vice President of EPE Marketing & Media replied & offered an apology - as well as some Graceland Tour passes...
" I’ll go back and check and see how it was uploaded since you are correct, we are very careful about that. I apologize that it was up there. If you plan on visiting in the next 12 months, let me know and I would love to send you some Graceland Tour passes that you can use.
Thanks, SW"

Update - Tony (with respect) has declined the EPE free pass offer but asked if the passes could be transferred to a friend, who’s Husband is taking her to Graceland in September this year for a special Birthday treat and Scott has agreed.
Tony wishes to applaud Scott for his problem solving and strategic thinking regarding the matter after his complaint.
BRAVO Scott, great PR work! - Tony Stuchbury

Elvis Guitar Art in Tupelo: People of all ages turned out for the unveiling of an Elvis Guitar art display on Saturday where 15 guitar sculptures were painted with an Elvis Presley theme.
The game plan is to put 15 of these brand-new guitar sculptures along Main Street, extending all the way out to the Elvis Presley Birthplace in east Tupelo, and to place them in strategic locations along the road. Organizers say that placement will add some character and continuity to downtown Tupelo.
"They will kind of fill in the east end of Main Street towards the birthplace," adds Stafford. "So it will be an icon that we have going down our Main Street for visitors and for people from this community."
Besides the Elvis connection, the guitar attraction also serves a purpose of educating people about the benefits of art.
Each guitar has its own theme, ranging from gospel music to the blues.

Clinton Presidential Center Debuts Two new ELVIS Exhibits: This last weekend the William J. Clinton Presidential Center opened two new exhibits "Elvis" and "Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer" which will run through August 21 and September 11, respectively, and will be accompanied by exhibit-related events, activities and programming throughout the summer.
"Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer" is a collection of 56 captivating black-and-white images of Elvis captured by noted photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer. Hired in 1956 by RCA Victor to shoot promotional photographs of a little-known and recently signed recording artist, Wertheimer realized that his subject was on the verge of creating a music revolution. This exhibit takes visitors on a photographic journey that captures the fleetingly private life of one of the world’s most public figures.
"When I was originally given the assignment, I had to ask ‘Elvis who?’ said Wertheimer. "As soon as I met him, on March 17, 1956, I knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was determined to make the most of it. I took more than 2,500 images, 56 of which will be showcased at the Clinton Center."
"Elvis" is an original separate exhibition that was inspired by President Clinton’s own fascination with the birth of rock ’n’ roll and the man behind the music. President Clinton describes his appreciation for Elvis in his autobiography, My Life, "Beyond his music, I identified with his small-town Southern roots. And I thought he had a good heart." In partnership with Graceland, items will include memorabilia from some of Elvis’ most popular movies, such as Elvis’ red MG from "Blue Hawaii."
"Elvis Presley fans are among the most dedicated and most diverse, and we are proud to include President Clinton as an admirer of Elvis’ music, movies and his on-going cultural influence," said Scott Williams, Vice President of Marketing and Media for Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Four generations of Presleys hit London: In his celebrated lifetime, Elvis Presley never visited London.
Now his family are making up for it, it seems. The famous family were four generations-strong as they enjoyed a trip to London.
Four generations stepped out for a night in the capital, dining at the Ivy before heading to another celebrity haunt, the Groucho Club in Soho. Singer songwriter Lisa Marie, 43, was joined by her mother Priscilla, 66 and grandmother Anna Lillian, 85. Her daughter Riley,21, and her son Ben, 19  were also in attendance.
And the older women in the family have certainly appeared to defy the ageing process.

Lisa Marie looked youthful in her pink jacket and dark trousers and showed off a two tonal hair tonal.
Meanwhile Priscilla, ex-wife of music legend Elvis, was sporting a flash of red hair which matched her all black outfit.

Teenager Ben towered over his mother and had stepped out in an edgy look consisting of black jeans an unbutton shirt and dark eyeliner on his lower lids.
Meanwhile model Riley, who has had a strong of high-profile jobs after making her catwalk debut at the age of 14, went casual with her blonde hair scraped back, a pair of rolled up jeans and a brown jacket.

'Fifth Time Around' new Audionics CD: The legendary March 20th, 1974 Memphis, TN concert has been released on a number of occasions, beginning with RCA's original 1974 LP edit with artificial applause mixed in. In 1994, a more complete, unofficial version was issued by " Fort Baxter". It was, however, a patchwork from several different sources incl. many tracks taken from the original RCA LP with overdubs. In 1997, "Steamroller Blues" was issued in pristine quality on "Platinum - A Life In Music". Finally in 2004, BMG's "Follow That Dream" the Elvis collectors label reissued this show nearly complete, in a beautiful deluxe package.
Audionics worked with a DAT copy of an original, rough mix tape "as recorded at the Coliseum". Every bit was carefully enhanced in a renowned studio to achieve the best possible quality for your optimal listening pleasure. We hope that you enjoy the results.
No remixing. No noise reduction. No edits. No artificial reverb or other added effects. No heavy compression. Just a pure, raw and natural sound. The King back in his hometown Memphis, on the 20th anniversary of his first release "That’s All Right Mama". Elvis was in great form for this recording, and now, for the first time, you can enjoy the excellence of his performance that night in the best-ever sound!
This CD will be released in digipack accompanied by 20-page booklet with many photos from the concert and an interesting essay.
For many, this concert remains the definitive, mid-70s document of The Elvis Presley Show. And that's all right. If you are not satisfied with previous releases of this show, don't miss your chance to obtain this alternate version as provided by Audionics. A decision you will not regret!

Colonel Parker on ABC's Nightline: Recently noted on FECC is this August 1987 interview from Colonel Tom Parker aged 78, with ABC news Anchorman Ted Koppel.
Midnightx succinctly commented, "Parker was a complicated man. A somewhat innovative manager for the new genre of Rock N Roll during the mid/late 50's (his influence on marketing, promotion and exposure is still felt today), but a man that lacked artistic vision and an ability to evolve. His style and approach was never refined and became outdated. He ultimately derailed the career of Elvis Presley because he lacked vision and sophistication to manage an act during the mid/late 60's and 70's."

Budapest names Elvis Presley honorary citizen: Budapest's city council has named Elvis Presley an honorary citizen of the Hungarian capital in gratitude for his support of Hungary's anti-Soviet revolution of 1956.
Last wednesday's announcement comes nearly a month after municipal authorities named a small park – chosen by voting on the city website – after The King.

On Jan. 6, 1957, during his last appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Elvis sang a gospel standard, "Peace in the Valley," which Sullivan said reflected the singer's concern for Hungarians' plight after the short-lived uprising. Sullivan said Elvis wanted people to make donations to be sent to Hungary.

>>> I was with Elvis in '64 and at no time did he do a recording session with the Platters or anyone else.  The only way they could have his voice is if they lifted it from one of his own recordings of those songs and I don't remember him recording any if not most of those songs.  They would have had to make one helluva a deal with Parker and RCA to use his voice that way.
I think this is another case of someone trying to capitalize on Elvis since he died. It's funny they have waited 34 years to make that claim.  If Elvis had done that someone from The Platters or Buck Ram's assistants would have known it was done and they would have spoke up sooner.  It's just some more bullshit in regards to Elvis.  This is just a ploy to sell that album. - Marty.

'Original Elvis Tribute Tour' ROCKS Europe: As we posted yesterday EIN's friend Rick Crofts reported on the success of the european 'The Original Elvis Tribute Tour' 2011.
>>> The 2011 tour featured Elvis' original musicians Duke Bardwell, Jerome "Stump" Monroe and Bobby Wood. We rolled into Madrid, Spain. This really was a cool experience. Just to see the light in these fans eyes to meet someone who knew Elvis, or performed, or recorded with Elvis was really fun. They had such energy, and a glow that was unmistakable. They loved Elvis. Period.

Other fans have requested to see more clips, these are some of EIN's favourites. If we didn't live in Australia we would have surely been there.

Elvis Recorded With The Platters?: Here's a fascinating news story spotted by EIN contributor Brian Quinn - that is unfortunately not true.
>>>> "ValCom, Inc. reported a big gain in quarterly earnings when the media and entertainment company disclosed the financial results for the 2nd quarter of its financial year.
A key statistic in the 2nd quarter 2011 financial data is the company's total assets which grew over 200% from September 2010 to over $24 million.
ValCom expects a great surge in revenues from its content library. The company has over 6,000 video and audio titles in the library. In 1st quarter 2011, an appraisal was conducted by DOS Broadcast and Appraisal Services to determine an accurate value of the content owned by the company. DOS has estimated that the value of the library exceeds $128 million. The library contains rare and unique video and audio content including 13 master recordings of Elvis Presley with The Platters; masters from Ike & Tina Turner before they were stars; and a very rare 3 Stooges film. The library also contains films starring the top names in Hollywood like Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Robert DiNiro, Jodi Foster, Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson."
EIN notes that while Elvis is said to have sung some Platters songs between recordings at the 1976 Jungle Room Sessions - no recordings exist. Elvis also sang The Platters 'Only You' in concert in his early 1950 concerts.

Elvis & The Beatles Come Together for UK Exhibition: A unique exhibition is uniting the world's biggest music icons! Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. in Memphis, along with The Beatles Story in Liverpool, England, have announced a transatlantic partnership to develop an exclusive, jointly curated exhibition that will explore how The Fab Four were influenced by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
'Elvis and Us' represents the first time the two cornerstones of 20th century popular culture have come together since that fateful meeting in 1965 at Elvis’ Bel Air home. The exhibition will include rare artefacts from both The Beatles Story and the Graceland archives, many of which have never before been displayed publicly.
'Elvis and Us' will open to the public on September 28, 2011, at The Beatles Story in Liverpool, England. It will be a multimedia, interactive experience filled with music, video and artefacts. The exhibition will allow visitors to experience the power of Elvis and The Beatles along with their explosive impact on music and popular culture. From hit albums to movies, books, and plays, both Elvis and The Beatles are celebrated around the world today.
EIN was there first as we already featured Elvis in 'The Beatles Story' back in April 2010 with a spotlight by Tony Stuchbury - LOOK HERE.
One of the key elements explored in the 'Elvis and Us' exhibition will be the evening Elvis and The Beatles met in person on August 27, 1965, at Elvis' home in Bel Air, California. The white Fender bass guitar played by both the king and the Fab Four at that meeting will be on display. It's a piece of pop culture history that has never been publicly exhibited before!
Other artefacts being brought to the UK for the first time include the shirt worn by Elvis in the "Jailhouse Rock" movie, telegrams from Colonel Parker and Elvis to Ed Sullivan, rare video footage from the earliest days of Elvis' career, a ticket to the ‘68 Comeback special, and the pool table played on by Elvis and The Beatles.

'Elvis In Concert' 2012, Possible WORLD Tour: The 'Elvis In Concert' 2012 Tour may be a lot bigger than we've been told so far. According to the Times Record News, the Stamps (that's Ed Enoch and four new members, Jerry Kelso, Michael Means, Roger Robinson and Chad Riley) will be the male backing vocals. Also, Times Record News, whose journalists spoke with Ed Enoch, indicates that the 2012 Tour will be traveling to Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and Hawaii.
From the Times Record News Website: The Stamps these days are led by Ed Enoch, the only remaining member of the group who toured with Elvis in the '70s. The King invited the quartet to tour with him in 1971, and they were a regular fixture at his live concerts until his death in 1977.

The band members often would go to The King's hotel suite after performing a concert, where they'd sing gospel music with him. The Stamps also contributed vocals to many of his studio recordings between 1972 and 1977.
It was during this time that the gospel group also released one of its most critically acclaimed double albums, "Live at Murray State." The Stamps Gospel Quartet is a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and is a multiple Grammy and Dove Award-winning group.
Ed Enoch joined The Stamps as a baritone in 1969 and later became lead vocalist and road manager. "I will never forget Elvis as a wonderful, talented, kind and compassionate friend," Enoch has said.
Besides working with Elvis, Enoch, as part of The Stamps, has sung for Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson and Ricky Skaggs, to name a few. He and the rest of the group — that's Jerry Kelso, Michael Means, Roger Robinson and Chad Riley — are scheduled to tour Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and Hawaii in 2012 with "Elvis: The Concert."

Sam Thompson, Elvis' bodyguard, 2011 Interview: Sam Thompson first met Elvis in November 1972. At the time Elvis was dating Sam's sister Linda Thompson. As an officer with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, Elvis and Sam became fast friends. In July 1973, Elvis purchased a home for Sam less than a mile from the gates of Graceland. Sam travelled with Elvis on the road tours from 1972 until 1976 as Elvis' friend and companion. In July 1976, Sam went to work full time for Elvis, as his personal bodyguard and tour advance man, providing security for Elvis at Graceland, his other homes in California and on all the road tours, including hotel and airport security.

Do not miss this fascinating interview where Doug Elfman discovers the true character of Sam Thompson and his deep-friendship with Elvis.
