The 2011 Elvis Week Event Guide: EPE has now released the 2011 Elvis Week Event Guide as a free download.
.... Taking place August 10-16, this year marks the 55th anniversary of many Elvis firsts, including his first RCA single and national hit, 'Heartbreak Hotel', his first movie, 'Love Me Tender' and his first television appearances. Events for this year feature old fan favorites as well as numerous new ones, including Elvis Presley LIVE - The King in Concert, to be held on Saturday, August 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Orpheum. This exciting, new multi-media music event puts a hot studio-session band and back-up vocalists on stage for a theatrical experience in Memphis as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is projected, larger than life, on state-of-the-art screens. This is a virtual Elvis Presley concert, with Elvis singing lead vocals, presented exactly like one of his classic live performances at the Las Vegas Hilton showroom. The contemporary staging and overall production help create the illusion that Elvis is on stage.
Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster or at the Orpheum for this concert event. A few of our spotlight events include the 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, the “Sam Phillips: The Man that Invented Rock ‘n’ Roll” Documentary Screening, the annual Elvis Presley 5K Run, and Conversations on Elvis. 'An Afternoon In The Garden' Best Selling Elvis album of 2011: 'An Afternoon In The Garden' has once again re-entered the Billboard 200 this week - at #177 - with 3,087 copies sold.
- As of (late) October last year, the album had scanned a total of 194,552 units.
- A total of 306,183 units had been scanned in the US, as of last Sunday.
Consequently, 'An Afternoon In The Garden' sold/scanned approximately 112,000 copies in the past 9 months.
To date, the album has spent 20 weeks on the Catalogue chart and 14 weeks on the Billboard 200. 'An Afternoon In The Garden' is, with quite a margin, the best-selling Elvis album in 2011. Its chart performance and sales are actually better than the all the "new" Sony mainstream Elvis releases from the past ~3 years (including 'Viva Elvis' & 'Elvis '75').
The album re-entered the charts back in February 2011 and has been dipping in and out of both the Billboard 'Top 200' and 'Catalog Chart'.

Elvis Week - In Phoenix!: Under the desert sun, sequined jumpsuits are glistening brighter than ever as the Musical Instrument Museum announces its hip-shaking new exhibit – Elvis Presley: Three Decades of The King. The exhibit officially opens to the public on Saturday, Aug. 6, just in time for Elvis Week, Aug. 10 – 16.
We’re not talking about Graceland or Las Vegas, but about Phoenix, at Arizona’s Musical Instrument Museum.
The new Elvis exhibit, housed in MIM’s recently expanded Artist Gallery, will feature a collection of items on loan from Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis, TN and will tell the story of Elvis through three main periods of the King’s career:
- ·The early rock ’n’ roll years, culminating with his stint in the Army (1956–1960)
- ·His Hollywood years (1960–1968)
- ·His triumphant return to live performance (1968–1977)
Guests will get to experience The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll through a collection of personal items, clothing and musical instruments.

Memphis “Elvis” Pop Art Exhibit during Elvis Week: Peter Mars, leader of the Avant Pop Art movement for the last 20 years, and Stephen
Fishwick, founder of Paint in Motion, a live performance art form, will have their collections of “Elvis” artwork on display at Inspiration Art Gallery during the month of August. Inspiration Art Gallery, located in the Wolfchase Galleria, Memphis is excited to be hosting the works of these nationally acclaimed artists. Both are officially licensed by EPE. On August 12 & 13 there will be an expanded exhibit in the common area inside Entrance #5 of the Wolfchase Galleria. Inspiration Art Gallery, after representing the work of Thomas Kinkade for over 10
years, recently expanded to offer several other regional, national, and local artists.

Benefit for Joe & Martha Esposito: A benefit for Joe and Martha Esposito is being held on Thursday, August 4, 2011, in Carrollton, Texas. Funds raised at the event will go toward Martha's ongoing battle with cancer.
Everyone knows Joe Esposito as Elvis' personal friend and Co-best man at his wedding, and road manager. Joe's wife Martha has battled cancer and unfortunately it has returned. We know what a kind, generous man Elvis Presley was, and if he was still with us, he would do anything to help Joe & Martha.
The benefit will feature live performances by Elvis tribute artist Kraig Parker, Johnny Cash tribute artist Bennie Wheels, and Roy Orbison tribute artist Al Nelson.

'Elvis The Man & His Music' #92 : EIN has been overseas so got to their June Elvis magazines rather late. ETM&HM #92 is as good as always featuring a great selection of articles including 'Nick Adams in his own words', a fabulous article on 'The 60's Uncovered' about lesser known originals that Elvis recorded between 1960-1969 and a colour section on Elvis Sheet Music. The magazine also includes its usual excellent reviews and news features - and best of all a delightful 1980 interview by Stuart Colman with Heartbreak Hotel composer Mae Boren Axton.
The Mae Axton interview includes these interesting comments...
Q. In Jacksonville, Florida, do you think when Elvis was at the bottom of the bill at the time, he genuinely did what he was intending to do - the wild act. Or did you think Elvis said to the boys beforehand, "We'll show all these characters -we're gonna blow them off the stage"?
Mae Axton - No, that was Elvis. Because you have to understand what his religion was. He belonged to a Pentecostal Holiness Church, I don't know if you have that here or not. But the people in that church they move when they sing, and they move in everything they do and it was just a part of himself. And I'm sure... he had this pouty little grin and a look out of his eyes that was just natural. Something that he did all through
high school. I'm sure all of you did the same thing (laughs).

It was just a certain way to look at the girls and so forth and I think that was part of him. When they began screaming, he just did it a little more. Then of course when the Colonel saw the dollar signs and what was coming up, by the time he got to Daytona Beach he was talking about buying his contract.
Q. That was really something to be the co-composer on the very first RCA record by Elvis Presley...?
Mae Axton - That was a thing that I asked for specifically. I had told Elvis a number of times: "You get with Colonel Tom", because I knew he wanted to buy the contract from Bob, and Bob was willing. I said, "I'll write you a million-seller and you'll have it made". Because I was writing songs then and I had fourteen 'rock' tunes that had been on the charts and things. So Elvis grinned, but he didn't say anything because that was one of those things you just say but doesn't always happen (laughs)! (Right:Mae Axton, Lucille and Elvis- summer 1961)

It's Elvis Time - Magazine #266: The June 2011 magazine from the Official Dutch Elvis Fanclub "It's Elvis Time" is also very stylish indeed.
This month it features articles on Red West, a look back at 'Goodbye Memphis 1975/1976' as well as a lengthy interview with Elvis director Hal Kanter plus 'On The Road with Elvis' Imperials as well as regular News and Reviews features.
The magazine is printed in Dutch but the production values and some lovely rare photos (love this great 'Elvis Is Back' photo) makes it one of the most stylish European Elvis magazine around. The quality of the colour photos is very impressive as you can tell from the scanned images.

Special Guests for Conversations on Elvis at Elvis Week: At Elvis Week next wmonth you get the chanec to hear funny and touching stories about the King of Rock 'n' Roll at Conversations on Elvis during Elvis Week 2011! The event is on Sunday, August 13 at The Orpheum in downtown Memphis. The following special guests that knew, worked with, and spent time with Elvis will share their favorite memories.
Alfred Wertheimer - In 1956, Alfred Wertheimer was asked by RCA Victor to photograph their newest rising star, Elvis Presley. After the one-day shoot, Wertheimer felt compelled to continue documenting Elvis and his everyday moments during those first crucial years.
John Wilkinson - John first met Elvis when he was only 10 years old and snuck backstage at a concert Elvis was featured in. Years later, the two would re-unite. When Elvis formed his TCB Band in 1968, he handpicked John to play rhythm guitar. (Right: John Wilkinson with Elvis)
Joe Guercio - Joe has enjoyed a prolific career, but he is probably best known for his work with Elvis Presley. He was musical director and conductor for Elvis' concerts from the summer of 1970 through the summer of 1977, when Elvis made his last concert appearance. It was Joe who suggested that Elvis' shows open with theme from "2001 - A Space Odyssey."

'68 Special Director Added to Las Vegas Elvis Fest Lineup: Steve Binder, director and producer of the 1968 'Comeback Special' has just been added to the July Las Vegas Elvis Fest lineup! Binder will talk about his experiences working on what is now commonly referred to as the '68 Comeback Special. It was one of the biggest TV hits of the year, receiving 40% of the viewing audience, and rave reviews from the public and critics alike.
The Las Vegas Elvis Fest is on July 28-30, 2011 at the Las Vegas Hilton. Other featured speakers include Gene Lubas, artistic director for Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil; Sam Thompson, Elvis' friend and security head; Joe Moscheo and Terry Blackwood of Elvis' Imperials; Estelle Brown of the Sweet Inspirations; and DJ Fontana, Elvis' original drummer and Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Elvis Restaurants Coming to Eastern Europe!: Elvis themed restaurants are coming to Eastern and Central Europe! EPE. has licensed the EAD International Group for the project. The restaurants, called "Elvis American Diners," will feature décor inspired by the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Possible locations include Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Greece, Turkey and Russia.
"Elvis American Diner" is a unique restaurant concept. The artwork, food selections and music will present an American dining experience.
Two “Elvis American Diner” restaurants are currently in operation in Georgia. The first is in the National Philharmonic Building on Tbilisi’s Main Avenue and the second is in Tbilisi’s new amusement park. A third is currently under development in that city.

This year the band featured the incredible Robert Washington on lead vocals, Duke Bardwell (bass), Bobby Wood (piano), Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe (drums), Chris Casello (guitar) and Sue Moreno on vocals.

"Unseen" 1950s police footage of Elvis performing 'lewd movements' on stage will NOT fetch £10,000 as reported: Tabloids report that an Elvis Presley fanatic is supposedly set to cash in on his obsession with The King of Rock after placing never-before seen footage of 'The King' up for sale to the tune of £10,000!
Bill Ellis, 67, from Rhyl, North Wales paid the modest sum of £2.50 in today's monetary terms for the showreel, purchasing the unique souvenir alongside some of his favourite Elvis records in 1961, and now the rare footage thought to date back to the 1950s is expected to fetch the handsome four-figure sum at an auction next month.

Bill who has admitted he's open to offers, revealed he was amazed to see the global icon wearing his famous gold lame suit when he watched the film.And having subsequently watched the footage, the self-confessed fanatic was able to date it between 1957 and 1958 - with the jacket later becoming one of Elvis' trademarks.
Ahead of the auction, Ellis expects fans and collectors of rock memorabilia to pay a vast sum for the reel. EIN thinks he is mightily mistaken!
'The film shows Elvis from the waist up and it looks like he's singing Baby, Let's Play House. 'It is silent and was obviously taken by an amateur some distance from the stage. 'One theory is that it was made by Chicago police at a time when the authorities were checking on Elvis' supposedly lewd performances.'
Back in 1997, auctioneers put the item up for sale with a reserve price of £15,000. It was listed among 331 items of Elvis memorabilia to mark the 20th anniversary of his death. However, but despite a live satellite link-up with the Hard Rock Cafe in Berlin, the bidding fell short of that figure but is now expected to fetch the handsome sum when it returns to auction.
EIN Notes - There seems little doubt that this film will be the standard Chicago "Gold Lame suit" film that the UK Elvis fan club sold to Elvis fans in the 1960s - as Mr Ellis reports. Filmed in Chicago in 1957, it is not rare Elvis footage at all!

Genuine Unseen Elvis footage from 1957: It's just a few minutes and unfortunately there's no recorded sound from the day, but you can see recently discovered and unseen footage of Elvis at the Kennedy Veterans Hospital in January 1957. It seems as if Elvis is doing an interview (a microphone can be seen) and when he leaves the building, he stops for autographs.

"King on Screen: Elvis in the Movies" - Special Melbourne Presentation: During the Australian Melbourne International Film Festival there is a special presentation "King on Screen: Elvis in the Movies" by acclaimed author & director Adrian Wootton - next Tuesday 26 July, 2.15pm - 3.45pm.
Adrian Wootton is a former Director of the London Film Festival, British Film Institute and the UK's National Film Theatre, he contributes articles on screen culture to the Guardian and Sight & Sound, regularly broadcasts and reviews films on BBC Radio and is working on several book projects.

| New Worries over Sonny West Health: Sandi Pichon sent EIN this disturbing update today about Sonny West's health today. He has taken a turn for the worse. I wish I had more encouraging news to tell you... Sonny has serious blood loss to which there seems to be no explanation. He is being moved tomorrow to an after-care/rehab center for two weeks. I don't understand how they can move him when there is no diagnosis or treatment for the blood loss. Judy missed seeing the doctor two days in a row. She was at the hospital last night but Sonny slept the entire time she was there.
Due to their dire financial situation, Judy is going to sell some very personal items. She is offering two champagne glasses which Elvis and Priscilla gave them as a wedding gift. Judy is also considering selling the bible that Elvis and Priscilla gave her, which she carried in her wedding. It is inscribed by Priscilla. I hope she doesn't have to sell that, but she is getting financially desperate.
I ask that you continue to pray for a healing for Sonny. Thank you so much.

Elvis Presley made a special fashion of his famous and spectacular stage outfits, sometimes referred to as ”jumpsuits”. In every country there is an “Elvis impersonator” well dressed up in a copy of one of Elvis Presley’s outfits. The name “Elvis” is heard of in every corner of the world, and nearly everybody have heard about the dynamic performer dressed in a typical “seventies suit” with rhinestones and embroideries in different patterns. But what many people don’t know, is that these suits have their own name and their own story to tell. Not many people know how these outfits came to be characteristics for Elvis on stage, and their development during the years. After doing a long article series in the Norwegian “Flaming Star” Fan Club Magazine, our publisher, Pål Granlund asked if we were interested in making a book of the published material. Pål Granlund is one of a few Norwegians who have had the honour of meeting The King in person in Las Vegas and on tour. Everyone with a news related website has access to me to ASK befor they speculate, but most choose to make up lies, or try to paint me in a bad light. It's sad, but true. Don't believe what you read. Pay no attention to the rumors...
Many new productions are coming soon, and the next one, is a total surprise that should be out within a month or so....stay tuned. The best is yet to come. I will continue to release Elvis productions until I decide it is no longer enjoyable for me. Some take longer than others that are being released. But I am not on a time table, and I am not into this for the quantity of releases I can pump out, but the quality of each release. If I were doing it for the money it would surely show in my work, and you would get a new release every three months. But be assured, more are on the way soon.

EPE Takes Legal Action Against Global Bootleg Ring: In February 2011, Elvis Presley Enterprises took swift action to stop the commercial sale and distribution of a DVD/CD set 'The Final Curtain' which included recordings and audiovisual footage of Elvis Presley concert performances. Working with a team of investigators across three continents, EPE was able to track down the individuals believed to be behind the release and distribution of the box set.
On July 5, 2011, EPE reached a settlement with Joseph Pirzada. Under the terms of the settlement, Mr. Pirzada is enjoined from releasing, offering for sale, advertising, importing, distributing or stocking any audiovisual footage owned by EPE, including the 1977 CBS Special, Aloha From Hawaii, and the '68 Comeback Special, any 8mm film footage featuring Elvis Presley performances, as well as any unauthorized Elvis Presley merchandise. As part of the settlement, EPE will receive significant cash payments and was granted a security interest in certain real estate owned by Mr. Pirzada.
In a separate matter, EPE reached a settlement with Bud Glass. Under the terms of the settlement, Mr. Glass was similarly enjoined from manufacturing, distributing or selling any copyrighted works owned by EPE as well as any unauthorized Elvis Presley merchandise. As part of the settlement, EPE also will receive significant cash payments and was granted a security interest in certain Elvis Presley memorabilia owned by Mr. Glass.

While satisfied with these settlements, EPE continues to review additional evidence and is considering taking further actions against other individuals responsible for the manufacture, sale, and release of this particular box set.

Levitt Shell Elvis Week 2011 Kickoff Event: In a rather strange marketing concept EPE has announced that Elvis Week this year kicks off with a BEATLES-music concert at the Levitt Shell at Overton Park!
EPE announced today ... Levitt Shell at Overton Park will be the venue for an exciting anniversary event that commemorates the performance by Elvis Presley that many historians now consider to be the first live rock ‘n’ roll concert. Also included will be a celebration of Memphis’ relationship with Liverpool, led by British musician and original Beatles drummer Pete Best. The event will be hosted by Elvis' close friend and SiriusXM Elvis Radio DJ George Klein.
After recording “That’s All Right” on July 5th, 1954 at Sun Studio in Memphis, Elvis made his professional live performance debut as the opening act for Slim Whitman at The Overton Park Shell on July 30, 1954. When Elvis took the stage, he stole the show and changed the world of live music forever. The impact of that night would even be felt in Liverpool, England by a group of young boys who would become known as The Beatles.

Elvis Presley to Become a Comic Book Hero: The King of Rock 'n' Roll's love of superheroes and comic books is being explored in "Graphic Elvis," a unique illustrated anthology of original artwork inspired by the music and personal writings of Elvis Presley! The project is a collaboration between Liquid Comics and EPE.
"Graphic Elvis" will combine rarely before seen quotes, writings, photos and memorabilia with original pieces of artwork by leading international graphic novel artists. Commemorating the 35th anniversary of his death, the illustrated anthology will be an homage to Elvis’ lifelong appreciation of comic books.
When Elvis was named one of the Jaycees' Ten Outstanding Young Men in 1971, Elvis told the crowd "When I was a child, I was a dreamer. I read comic books and I was the hero of the comic book. … So every dream I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times."
The illustrated, oversized coffee-table book will be available in stores in early April 2012, followed by an iPad edition planned for release in mid-2012.

Heineken fans and music lovers alike can get a sneak peek by ‘Shazaming’ the song from the ad, "Bossa Nova Baby," a classic Elvis movie tune included on "Viva ELVIS - The Album," when they hear the re-mix track played on the radio.

Marty Lacker Comments to the story 'Will Elvis Presley See Revenge Against Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch?': Posted 2 days ago (see below) was the suggestion that the media-rot and the biased tabloid tell-alls of Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch started with the serialisation of 'Elvis: What Happened?'
... Even suggesting "The kind of institutionalized anti-rock company policy may well have been what led to the book that may have helped to kill Elvis Presley".

... I take exception to the Flippo article and his remark that Elvis What Happened helped kill Elvis. That's a crock of shit that was started by a couple of other members of the 'Memphis Mafia' who were sycophants and ass kissers and always trying to make others look bad in Elvis' eyes for their own benefit. If anyone helped cause Elvis' demise it was Colonel Parker who ran him into the ground with those damn tours going to the same cities every month and to Vegas just to satisfy his gambling habit and debts.
In addition Elvis partly was at fault for two reasons, he tolerated and didn't confront Parker and didn't get rid of him when he should have years before and his over dependency on his prescribed drugs. He took too many,too often as an escape from the boredom of his life that Parker had created. |

Some people,mainly the uninformed media and uninformed fans are quick to pin Elvis' death on the guys around him and neither ever spent one damn minute with Elvis or us. They think it makes them sound good when they mouth off as if they're in the know and protective of Elvis.
Truth is they do more harm then good. They need to get real and understand that Elvis was not G-d, he was a human being just like the rest of us and had human faults and frailties as we all do. The media, especially the tabloids sensationalize stories to make more money.
But it is finally coming to light what kind of greedy, low life scumbag Rupert Murdoch is as the English authorities have discovered his long underhanded and what I consider criminal dealings in furthering his power and influence through his media entities. He saw an opportunity to try to tear down a historical cultural icon in Elvis with no regard to what it did to Elvis, his family or hundreds of millions of fans or for that fact Red & Sonny, however he did see that the disgusting things he allowed Dunleavy to write would bring him millions in sales of the Star and Elvis What happened.
So he assigned someone as nasty as he is to write the book with Red, Sonny and Dave. As I said the guys wrote the book mainly to try to get Elvis to see what he was doing to himself and they did that out of love for him. The other reason they did it is because of the way Vernon Presley let them go. Elvis had told his father to give them each $5,000 as severance pay and let them know they'd be hired back later. Instead Mr. Presley gave them two weeks pay and said nothing about hiring them back. This after Red had been close to Elvis for over 20 years and Sonny for 18 years as his protectors. They had families who now were left with no income to live on.
They were inexperienced about book publishing and certainly about what kind of people Murdoch and Dunleavy were and so they went for the deal that provided them with the most money,as most authors do, so that their families could be taken care of while they searched for employment. Because of their publishing inexperience their deal with Murdoch and Dunleavy did not allow them to change the way Dunleavy wrote the book and they did not know what he wrote until it was finished. And as usual the fans always zero in on the negative things people write about Elvis even if they are a small part of the book. They wrote many good things in EWH but the fans choose to gloss over them.
Murdoch and Dunleavy are the villains in Elvis What Happened and the world is finally finding out what kind of human beings they really are. Murdoch operates the same way here in the US with his Fox News TV Channel, he has the rotten Republicans in his pocket so he allows the Channel to make up lies about everyone else in the other party in US Politics. The British authorities are arresting his executives but what they need to do is put him in prison for the rest of his life along with his minions who did his dirty work. His tentacles, they have revealed, reaches all the way into Scotland Yard and England's government. Put him in prison for what he did to people like Elvis and all the other lives of people he besmirched, all for money.
I have always whole heartedly believed that Red and Sonny tried to help Elvis see what he was doing to himself and they did it because they loved him and still do.

Sonny West Health Update: Sandi Pichon sent EIN this update today. I spoke with Sonny today and he sounds SO much better and stronger. His appetite is returning, which is a good thing. I am very encouraged. They continue to treat the staph infection and test daily for the progress of treatment. The spleen is also healing. The blood clots are still in the lungs unfortunately and until the spleen is healed they can't start the blood thinner to dissolve the clots.

Poland, Finland, Norway, Luxemborg, Spain and Germany a month ago.
This year the band featured the incredible Robert Washington on lead vocals, Duke Bardwell (bass), Bobby Wood (piano), Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe (drums), Chris Casello (guitar) and Sue Moreno on vocals.
Arjan Deelen produced and managed the tour.
In this interesting spotlight he looks back at power and magic that an ELVIS show can create - plus all the emotions and the highs that being on the road with an Elvis band can bring. Reunions between Duke Bardwell and Stump Monroe and the inspiration of Bobby Wood... and missed friends.

UPDATED Elvis Amarillo ’77 FTD CD Review: Elvis' second tour of 1977 kicked off in Tempe, Arizona on March 23rd. He had just returned from his final vacation in Hawaii and was hopefully rested and recuperated.
This previously un-released March 24th Amarillo concert was the second concert in the two-week tour and hopefully Elvis would be in better form than was often the case in 1977. In fact Felton Jarvis started recorded some songs professionally for the 'Moody Blue' album from Norman, Oklahoma the very next day.
The new Amarillo FTD focuses on this second tour and includes 11 Bonus Tracks creating a very packed CD. These include 'Steamroller Blues' Elvis' only 1977 version from Austin, Texas - as well as the very rare live 'Bosom of Abraham/You Better Run' previously unreleased.

Will Elvis Presley See Revenge Against Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch?: As we all know, Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch owner of News Limited is embroiled in a media scandal.
But did the media-rot and the biased tabloid tell-alls all start with Elvis? And will The King get his ultimate revenge?
CMT Editorial Director Chet Flippo has written a fascinating article this week. In it he talks about the nastiness of the New York Post and the serialisation of Elvis: What Happened?
... "early in the 1970s Murdoch instructed the San Antonio News staff to turn the paper into a "screamer." And the paper soon did so. With a vengeance. The staff began introducing Murdoch's patented tabloid formula of sensationalism, sex, celebrities, crime and corruption. The facts be damned.
- The kind of institutionalized anti-rock company policy may well have been what led to the book that may have helped to kill Elvis Presley. The 1977 book Elvis: What Happened? was a very messy tell-all expose, based entirely on interviews with three of Elvis' formerly trusted aides and bodyguards who had recently been fired by Elvis' father Vernon as part of a cost-cutting operation.
- "We lost money," Murdoch told Esquire magazine in 2008 in talking about the New York Post's finances. "Until one of our reporters wrote the 'true story' of Elvis Presley. We said we would serialize it, and it came out the day Presley died, completely by coincidence."
- The installments had actually been planned to run later, but Elvis' sudden death prompted Murdoch to pounce. The New York Post began printing installments from the book the day that Elvis died. The first headline read, "New Book Tells of His Decline in Drug Nightmare." |

- Objectively speaking, the book was a true Murdoch hatchet job. It laid out all of Elvis' dirty laundry that you didn't want -- or need -- to know. And it was all hearsay from the three bodyguards. No other sources are cited in the book at all. There are no voices to answer for Elvis. The book's copyright is by Murdoch's News Corporation. It became a best-seller, and the profits went to Murdoch's News Corporation, not to the author. It was written by Steve Dunleavy, a hard-drinking, controversial Australian reporter greatly favored by Murdoch.
Close Elvis associates have said the book had a devastating effect on Presley. He read portions of an advance copy of it, became alternately depressed and enraged and was agitated to the point of talking about luring Red and Sonny to Graceland and then killing them.
The book was published in early August of 1977. Elvis died on the floor of his bathroom in Graceland two weeks later, on Aug. 16, 1977.

Newly Discovered Elvis Artifacts at Graceland: Archivists at Graceland made an exciting discovery over the weekend! While cataloging artifacts for upcoming exhibits, they found new items inside one of Elvis' wallets that you may not have seen.
What was so special to Elvis that he kept it inside his wallet? Among the newly discovered artifacts are photos of Lisa Marie as a young child, a card from the Clark County Sheriff's Department in Las Vegas confirming Elvis' set of fingerprints on file, and a newspaper article announcing Elvis' appointment as a special deputy for Shelby County. The items range in date from 1961 to 1975.
Images of all the newly discovered items have just been added to the Elvis Insiders artifacts gallery.

"When Rock Lost Its Innocence": A new book has been released called "1950s Radio in Color: The Lost Photographs of Deejay Tommy Edwards." The book reproduces color slides that Edwards took of all the music and movie stars who passed through the studios of WERE-AM in Cleveland from 1955-1960. Edwards would project his slides on the walls of high school gyms, where he produced record hops and live shows. His color slides were the social media of their day. Obviously there was no Internet, TV was mostly black and white, and the press was stingy in its coverage of pop music, let alone rock 'n' roll, compared to today. For many of the kids in those gyms, this was the first time they had seen, for example, that famous photo of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley taken in 1955, when Haley was still the king of rock 'n' roll (Elvis would leave him in the dust within a few months). Today that photo is a classic that we take for granted. Back then it made people gasp.
Collectors Weekly has posted a fascinating article including an interview with the book's author, Christopher Kennedy, as well as eight sensational photos from the book, two of Elvis in fabulous quality. The other color slides are also very impressive.

Graceland attendance drops in 2010: The Memphis home of the King of Rock 'n' Roll saw a 4 percent drop in attendance from 2009 to 2010. Attendance figures for Graceland released earlier this year in the 2010 annual report of the parent company of Elvis Presley Enterprises show more than 540,000 people visited Graceland in 2009. That dropped to about 519,000 people in 2010.
The annual report does have some interesting things to say about business opportunities at Graceland - "The Graceland attraction was opened to the public in the 1980s and lacks many of the amenities and points-of-sale that one would expect from a tourist destination that garners over 500,000 visitors per annum. We see an opportunity to renovate the Graceland visitor experience as well as the adjacent Heartbreak Hotel to attract attendees and generate incremental per capita spending on merchandise and food & beverage."

'Elvis: Military Tour Of Duty 1958–1960' Mini Review: The Dutch It's Elvis Time Fan Club have offered EIN this recent DVD mini-review.
Elvis’ Tour Of Duty - A new dvd release about Elvis’ Army years… Haven’t we yet seen all of that? The short answer is: no. The cover of this release is a colourful one. It looks nice. Putting the dvd in to the player and up comes the first images and music… Looking at the artwork and the beginning of the dvd your hopes might drop that this is a highly entertaining release. Don’t let this fool you. When you are past the menu and the intro of the dvd you will be enlightened to see a truckload of footage. And very good ones… Elvis going in to the Army was no doubt one of the most important news items in 1958 and the press came on to the story in full force. And therefore a lot of footage exists on the years 1958-1960. The producers of this dvd have taken a lot of time and effort to collect the most extensive footage of this period in Elvis’ life. The footage comes from a wide variety of sources. In chronological order the dvd shows you the complete story of Elvis in the Army. There is footage you will know and a lot of footage that is not so common, better: very rare! A lot of the known footage is longer and sometimes presented from different, and to my eyes new angles. So what to expect? See Elvis in a office with an American flag. This is probably during the time he got drafted. Great stuff. Elvis induction in the Army as complete as you will ever see it up to the bruises on Elvis’ chins during the physical examination. Elvis’ arrival in Texas: wow! Elvis in Germany and in Paris and even Cliff Richard walking up to Elvis’ house only to find Elvis just left…fantastic! Elvis met by Nancy Sinatra upon his return. Elvis making the joke ‘Ari vi derci’ during a press conference, something I had only heard before not seen in screen. And yes: even GI Blues is there including the lovely advert ‘Gee, I Hope You Like It’, finally to be seen. There is so much amazing footage it is dazzling. Some might argue this is just a home produced production and a patch work of images. I would call it a ‘patchwork of love and highly interesting’. This release is a lot more entertaining than some of the dvd’s recently released and claiming to contain rare footage. Elvis really did a tour of duty and underwent his induction into the army in front of the world in his underpants like a real trooper. This dvd gives you all about our Soldier Boy Elvis and is a release not to be missed! Highly recommended.
Running time 112 minutes. Nearly 2 hours of Elvis Army time.

'The Toledoan Balladeer' - New Import CD: The import releases are coming out thick and fast as we approach Elvis Week 2011.
The Management 3 import label announces the release of the CD 'The Toledoan Balladeer', an audience-recording of the April 23, 1977 concert as recorded in Toledo. Promoted as "One of the best concerts of Elvis 2nd Sprinttime Tour 1977"
The majority of this concert has been previously released by Fort Baxter - Elvis sounded worn out and the audience recording was not good. Surprisingly Elvis' rather excellent Ann Arbor concert was the following day.
EIN has yet to hear whether Management 3 have obtained a better audience recording. The tracklist is the standard 1977 set.
The CD, with a playing time of almost 68 minutes, comes with an 12 page booklet.

Sonny West Health Update: Sandi Pichon sent EIN this update today. Sonny is making progress slowly. He has edema in his legs, stomach and hands. He is still on oxygen, but is in really good spirits. The dr said he will remain in the hospital until perhaps the end of this coming week, depending on the fluid. When he goes home, he will have to have a hospital bed as he can't lie flat. He also will have to be on major antibiotics in it to continue treatments infections and the discovered blood clots. Please keep up your prayers. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.

'This Is Elvis' New Import CD: 1981-2011, 30 Year anniversary edition - the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Recording.....DIGITALLY IMPROVED FROM THE ORIGINAL ALBUM MASTERS
This Is Elvis is a 1981 documentary film directed by Andrew Solt and Malcolm Leo, based on the life of Elvis Presley. It combined archival footage with re-enactments, and narration by pop singer Ral Donner. It was screened out of competition at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival. The film grossed $2.0 million at the box office in the U.S./Canada, ranking #92 for 1981
RCA Records released a two-disc soundtrack vinyl album for the film in 1981 (CPL2 4031), featuring the first official release of several of Presley's 1950s television appearances, and also many edited and overdubbed tracks that, 'till this day, are still unreleased on CD.
It's still a mystery why RCA never released a decent CD version of this classic soundtrack album. Yes, there has been some bad bootleg releases, with a simple vinyl reproduction of the original double album, and some tracks appeared on import cds, most of them in inferior quality.

James Burton to be inducted in the Delta Music Hall of Fame: Tom Schedler, Louisiana Secretary of State, will induct James into the Delta Music Hall of Fame on Saturday 10 September 2011.
The Delta Music Hall of Fame is part of the Delta Music Museum located in Ferriday, Louisiana, and honors rock and roll and blues musicians from the Mississippi River delta country. Tourists from thirty-eight states and fourteen countries have visited the museum since the museum opened in the spring of 2002.
Other inductees include: Jimmie Davis, Fats Domino, Pete Fountain, Mickey Gilley, John Fred Gourrier, Allen ‘Puddler’ Harris, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Johnny Horton, Dale Houston and Grace Broussard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Aaron Neville, Percy Sledge, Jimmy Swaggart, Irma Thomas, and Conway Twitty.

Sonny West Health Update: From Sandi Pichon - July 6 and Wonderful News, Sonny is much improved. His breathing has improved, he is in good spisrits, they are starting physical therapy. PRAYER IS SO POWERFUL!!!"
Yetserday July 5 was Sonny's 73rd birthday and he was still in ICU. Before I left I gave him a gift and Jennie Carpenter had brought him something Sunday which I gave him yesterday. Judy was not at the hospital for the 3:00 visit on Sunday so I was allowed to let Jennie go in with me for 10 minutes. He was very happy to see her. Saturday we "snuck" Danny McCorkle in saying he was a brother - which he is like a brother to Sonny. I think they got wise to us because one of the nurses said what a big family Sonny had LOL...we are doing anything we can to make him smile and yet not tax his strength because he is very weak. I did take all the cards people had sent and he was very touched. When I read him the email from Linda Lou saying they had a prayer chain going he got tears in his eyes and said "God bless her"...I told him how many people loved him and were praying for him and for Judy and he was very touched.
As you all know, I have been a close friend of Sonny and his family for 37 years. I am also his personal assistant. If you want to send a card or donations, they can be sent to me at P O Box 161052, Memphis TN 38186.

No more "Hilton Hotel" Vegas!: The Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas will always be associated with Elvis Presley, the man who made more money for the hotel than any other act in history, but news just in shows that the name, the "Hilton Hotel" will become a thing in Vegas history as the famous hotel name will vanish as of January 1st 2012.
Hilton Worldwide notified the owner of the famed Las Vegas Hilton that it plans to terminate its franchise license agreement by the end of the year.
Hilton Worldwide said that as of Jan. 1, its franchise agreement with Colony Resorts LVH Acquisitions LLC, owner and operator of the Las Vegas Hilton, will have been terminated, forcing the off-Strip hotel to give up the Hilton name and loyalty program.
In 1969, Elvis performed 58 consecutive sold-out shows, playing to 130,157 fans. The King broke his own attendance record three times in February 1970, August 1970 and August 1972. Elvis also maintained a residence at the Hilton until December 1976.

Young Kids all shook up over Elvis at Clinton library: Elvis has entered the building at the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center. The presidential library, whose namesake never shied away from his love of The King, has transformed into a school of rock this week with 25 elementary-school students strumming guitars, banging on drums and learning about Elvis during Rock 'n Roll Camp.
"A lot of these kids have never really known what Elvis is about, and they have never played anything," said the camp's instructor. "I want them to leave here with a love for music and the ability to at least to somewhat play an instrument."
The library is also hosting two exhibits this summer celebrating the Memphis-born artist, a nod to the music-loving former President Bill Clinton's fascination with Elvis.
Clinton, who once played sax on The Arsenio Hall Show, has said he identified with the rock-and-roll legend because of their shared small-town Southern roots.
He wrote in his 2004 autobiography "My Life": "I never quite escaped Elvis. In the '92 campaign, some members of my staff nicknamed me Elvis."
During his presidency, people often sent him Elvis souvenirs and paintings featuring himself and the late rock star.

One exhibit, in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises, highlights Elvis movie memorabilia such as posters, scripts and the 1960 MG car used by Elvis in "Blue Hawaii" that was also part of his personal collection at that time.
The other exhibit features a series of black and white photographs by Alfred Wertheimer. Wertheimer traveled with Elvis in 1956 shortly before he became a superstar.
The campers have toured the exhibit, watched Elvis videos and learned about his legacy in rock history class.
On Tuesday afternoon, Elvis impersonator Matt Joyce discussed Elvis' life and sang classics like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock." He threw out teddy bears and passed out Hawaiian leis.
Emerson said the camp's instruments and equipment were donated by other instructors and local musicians. The charge for the full-day camp is $200 for non-members and $150 for members of the Clinton Foundation. Another camp for older students is scheduled for July. Jim Curtin and the Elvis Guitar: As we posted below super-collector Jim Curtin died last week. As has been mentioned Jim Curtin had a special Gibson acoustic guitar made for Elvis, which Elvis even used on stage.
The full story is related on the excellent JamesVRoy Scotty Moore website… "In the early ‘70s, after spending his adolescence fanatically collecting virtually every Presley recording, foreign and domestic, Curtin, by then in his early 20s, decided he had to meet Elvis. He knew he needed a special plan, so he saved every cent he could from his job in a grocery store, and ordered a $2,000 custom-made Gibson guitar, which had "Elvis Presley" and two crowns inscribed on the fretboard.
At 5 a.m. one morning Curtin was summoned by the elder Presley to Elvis’s hotel room. There Curtin met Presley, reverentially told him how much he loved him, and presented him with the guitar..."

Sonny West In Hospital - Update: Essential Elvis' Andrew Hearn sent us this recent update... I heard directly from Sonny West's son who told me that his father DID have surgery on Friday to remove infection and drain clots in his lungs. Unfortunately, we almost lost Sonny during the operation, but thankfully he stabilised. Sonny is now in ICU and is doing a little better. He is comfortable, but there is a possibility for one more surgical procedures in a few days.

Sonny West In Hospital - Update: Sandy Pichon has sent us the following upon visiting Sonny West in hospital.The doctors did not do the surgery this weekend because Sonny's blood-pressure dropped too much, but they were able to draw out 3 1/2 litres of fluid from one lung. Dr's put him on a respirator and he is in ICU. She asked - again - for y'all to please keep praying really hard for him. Sonny asked me to thank you for your prayers and that you continue to lift him up until he is completely healed. He is anxious to get back to work on his movie Fame and Fortune. 'Wild Tiger at The Hilton Vol.2' OUT NOW: The MxF label will release soon the second volume of 'Wild Tiger at The Hilton' featuring the unreleased Vegas September 1, 1974 Midnight Show.
Elvis' performance is superb, still at the top if his ability he deliveries a long show which is very intense, full of enthusiasm he sang with power and sensitivity, delivering a solid and heartfelt repertoire. This season will be remembered for the great opening night and naturally for the Closing Nights from the numerous dialogues, but for the superb music too, Elvis looks fantastic and it is clear that despite it all the music keeps his brain active. MxF label says " The sound is great an unbelievable for an audience recording"
EIN says Buyers Beware - The MxF label described the sound on their Hilton Vol.1 as "an unbelievable audience recording.. great definition to the background music" when in fact it was extremely poor quality with unbearable audience screaming. A few EIN readers commented that "Wild Tiger Vol.1 was so poor I will probably never play it again." Hopefully this show is in better quality. The concert has been out on CDR previously. 'The Very Best Of Elvis Presley Live' new SONY budget CD: A "camden" CD for the new millenium? 14 classic Elvis in concert greatest-hits tracks for under US$10. Nothing from the 1972 tours and a pale shadow compared to other recent budget releases, like the excellent BMG Genre cd 'Elvis Live' which was similarly priced. Must have taken 30 seconds to design the cover! Interestingly most tracks are taken from the more recently released August 22nd 1969 show that featured on the 'In Person' FTD.

Jim Curtin Passed Away: It is with great sadness that I must report that Jim E. Curtin, Elvis impersonator and collector supreme, passed away this past weekend. I received the sad news from my oldest friend in the Elvis world Paul Dowling this morning. Paul and I were just young pups when we first met Jim (the original Elvis freak). His knowledge of everything Elvis was astounding and, in fact, I learned much from him about the world of Elvis records. At one point Jim Curtin (shown right with Elvis) presented Elvis with a black Gibson acoustic guitar with "EP" in the neck and Elvis gave him a jumpsuit to thank him. Jim Curtin's huge Elvis collection included 3 jumpsuits and thousands of unique pictures. The majority of his collection has been noticed when it was auctioned off. Jim wasn't very active in the Elvis world in recent years but his contributions to the world of Elvis collecting will not be forgotten. Jim produced a number of good books including Christmas With Elvis; Unseen Elvis: Candids of the King; Elvis The Early Years; Elvis and the Stars and The Elvis Scrapbook.

'Elvis - Original Album Classics' - new SONY box-set: The Colonel would be proud as SONY release a 5-CD box set of Elvis' 'Gold Records' series. The original series started in 1958 and subsequent titles followed in 1959, 1963, 1968 & 1985.
Volume one of this 'Original Album Classics' series was back in 2008 with five albums from 'Elvis Presley' to 'GI Blues'

Wanda Jackson credits Elvis for foundation of her career: Wanda Jackson, now 73, is still touring and has had her recent CD produced by Jack White of the White Stripes
"I haven't quit working," Jackson said during a recent phone interview in advance of her Summerfest show. "I did take some time off for one year, but I had to get back on the road, because life at home was destroying me. So much of what I've recorded was in Europe, and I'd also been in gospel music. It was a very rewarding time for me."
Nevertheless, her return to larger infamy is a result of her return to rockabilly - and of the encouragement of Jack White, whose work with the White Stripes and elsewhere has often shown the influence of the '50s. Jackson and White first discussed collaborating when Jackson was considering a duets album. On the advice of a friend of her publicist, she got in touch with White.
The resulting album, "The Party Ain't Over," came out early this year, and it pairs Jackson's distinctive high-pitched growl to songs as varied as Jimmie Rodgers' "Blue Yodel #6," to Amy Winehouse's "You Know That I'm No Good."
"The Party Ain't Over" is meant to return Jackson to her rockabilly glory, and even its title is a nod to her biggest hit in that realm, "Let's Have a Party." And White couldn't have been unaware that Elvis Presley had also recorded that song, or that Presley and Jackson toured together in 1955 and '56.
"Elvis was so playful and had so much fun onstage," Jackson said of Presley. "I remembered that that's what I needed to do. I caused everybody to have a good time, and I learned that from Elvis."
Presley was also the one who encouraged her to become, for all intents and purposes, the first female rock 'n' roll singer.

"I told him I couldn't sing that kind of music," Jackson said. "He said, 'Well, I think you can, and if your ambition is to become a big name, you need to start doing that.' That encouragement and wisdom he gave me was valuable. I'm still enjoying the fruits of my labor back then."
Elvis fans should consider what a potential classic album could have been recorded in 2011 with Elvis Presley & producer Jack White at the helm - a real shame the King left the building way too early. .

June 26th Elvis Anniversary - Can it really be 34 years ago?: June 26th is a major anniversary in the life of Elvis Presley and his legacy. Not only does the date celebrate the birthday of Elvis manager 'Col' Tom Parker - but also the death of Vernon Presley, Elvis' father, in 1979.
On June 26, 1977 Elvis performed on stage in Indianapolis Market Square Garden for the very last time.
The local newspaper The Indianapolis Star reported:
18,000 enthusiastic, sweaty-palmed fans at Market Square Arena prepared to greet royalty-the hip-swivelling singer who has been called the King of rock 'n' roll since the Mid-1950s.
Elvis. His name was everywhere: on posters, buttons, souvenir books, T-shirts, hats, and homemade clothes that proclaimed with personal touches, admiration for a man idolised by millions.
Elvis appeared, in a gold and white jumpsuit and white boots, bounding onstage with energy that was a relief to everyone. At 42, Elvis is still carrying around some excess baggage on his mid-section, but it didn't stop him from giving a performance in true Presley style.
His opening number, the audience-grabbing 'C.C. Rider', got his portion of the show off to a flash-bulb-popping, hand-clapping start. His 'Amen', in which he encouraged everyone to lap and sing along, seemed to bring everyone together, as did 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'I got a woman.'
His older numbers seemed to draw more applause, although just about everything he did created mass hysteria, especially his "leg jerks."
One of his best numbers, we feel, was 'It's Now Or Never', followed by a medley of his hits. He also offered 'This Time You Gave Me A Mountain',

and 'Fairytale', plus several others. He also did his famous "I uh, well, well, well, well, well, well" monologue, which seems to turn dyed-in-the-roots Elvis fans on. They coveted scarves, tossed into the audience after gracing the singer's neck, caused mad scrambles by the stage as he got rid of them just about as fast as they were put around his neck. The fans were well-behaved, considering the usual stampedes that take place at rock concerts.

'Why ELVIS Left The Building' - Book Review: Being republished now is one of the worst-ever books about Elvis - full of lies and totally denigrating our man.
"Elvis had rotten green and yellow teeth" and "Elvis was the Forrest Gump of the Lauderdale Courts" are just some of the ridiculous claims by Jimmy Denson from whom the material for this book is sourced.
