Viva
McGowan - actress to co-star in CBS' Elvis pic: Rose McGowan
("Charmed") is in negotiations to star in the CBS miniseries
"Elvis," a biopic of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. McGowan will
play Ann-Margret, Elvis' co-star in the 1964 film "Viva Las
Vegas," whose romance with the King during and after the making
of the film created a stir and put a strain on his relationship
with future wife Priscilla Beaulieu. Ann-Margret, an Oscar-nominated
actress and accomplished singer who was often referred as
the female Elvis for her energetic performances, went on to
become lifelong friends with the King, with the two sending
each other gifts and attending each other's shows until his
death in 1977. She also attended Presley's funeral in Memphis.
CBS has yet to cast Elvis, despite a nationwide talent search.
Randy Quaid was previously tapped to play Presley's manager
"Colonel" Tom Parker. (News, Source: Reuters/Hollywood

Are
you LOAFSOME Tonight?: Sliced bread tribute to Elvis
- Elvis fans are about to get all shook up over news that
The King has risen. For bakers Kingsmill is creating bread
shaped in the singer's image to celebrate his 70th birthday.
Thousands of limited edition white loaves with each slice
a side profile of his famous quiff, aquiline nose and
jaw will be on shelves by January |
|
8.
Even the packaging carries the cheeky slogan "By appointment
to the King". And though Elvis has been "brown bread" for 27
years, Kingsmill believes this is a chance for fans to literally
toast the King of rock 'n' roll. Jo Sykes of Allied Bakeries
said: "What better tribute to the great man than to bake him
his own limited edition loaf." The bakery has so far managed
to steer clear of litigious Elvis Presley Enterprises by using
lookalikes for its £7million TV ads which show spoof footage
of Elvis as a baker. Based around his only visit to the UK -
an hour stopover at Glasgow Prestwick Airport in 1960 - the
spoof documentary commercials reveal his first love was Kingsmill
bread. (News,

pig has left fans of the King all shook up and retailer
Boots in the trough. The pig - which has proved to be

to the musician, but Boots buoyed by bumper sales say
that most people see the funny side. (Odd

Elvis
and China: an untapped goldmine?:
With so many companies in the West establishing offices, or
forming strategic alliances in mainland China, it struck EIN
that the country is potentially a goldmine of opportunity
for "things" Elvis. While the International Elvis
Fan Club in Hong Kong is very active, little is known about
Elvis related things in "mainland China" which has
a population exceeding 1 billion! Perhaps EPE and BMG
should have strategic plans addressing this particular opportunity.

you think. (News/Comment, Source:

Elvis
fans - "The Following": Many words have

Fans
gather to give thanks for life of Elvis: Whitehaven residents
Ramona Carey and daughter Maile hosted a celebration of thanksgiving
for the life of Elvis Presley at the former home of the late
singer's father, Vernon Presley, in Whitehaven this Thanksgiving
holiday. Carey, a lifelong Elvis fan, named Maile after the
female lead character, played by Joan Blackman, in the movie
"Blue Hawaii" is the caretaker of the Whitehaven property
owned by California artist, Diana Magrann. Magrann allows
fans to hold meetings at the residence and has filled the
rooms with her lifelike portraits of Elvis, some of which
are available for purchase. Originally purchased by Presley
in 1964, the property at 1266 Dolan features an extension
built to accommodate wife Dee and stepsons David, Billy and
Ricky Stanley. The property was attached to Graceland for
many years, separated only by a five-foot-high fence. A back
gate made it easy for Vernon Presley to go to work in his
office behind Graceland Mansion, and was also used as a convenient
exit for Elvis when he wanted to slip out unnoticed. The property
was sold by the elder Presley in 1978 and he spent his remaining
time at Graceland. In attendance at the Thanksgiving celebration
were neighbors Bud and Mary Stonebraker, Mitzi Pruitt, Joe
Cady, Bonnie Hill, Sue and Terry Lindgren, Jean Bolden, Joanne
Forzani and David Lindgren. Special guest singer/songwriter
Jesse Lee Denson played his Elvis Tribute album that consists
of 10 original songs and performed, his most famous religious
song "The Miracle of the Rosary" that was recorded by Elvis
in 1972. (News, Source: CommercialAppeal.com)

Does
Engelbert Humperdinck know something we don't?: EIN found
this news report curious - at least Mr. Humperdinck's claim
that Elvis was one of his closest friends and that they often
performed each other's songs: 'With an album now riding high
on the charts in Europe, music legend Engelbert Humperdinck
is not showing any signs of slowing down. During a recent
interview, Humperdinck confessed that he was obsessed with
singing and was proud to be still involved in the music industry.
The singer, who has been in Malaysia three times previously,
will be performing at a dinner show today and tomorrow at
the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel. ... He has performed
with some of the greatest entertainers in the world and one
of his closest friends was Elvis Presley and the two legends
often performed each other's songs.' It's true Elvis and Engelbert
met, but to our knowledge only a handful of times, and while
Elvis sang Release Me and There Goes My Everything,
we can't think of any other Engelbert hits he covered. (News,

James
Dean pips Elvis as the "coolest icon of all time":
Hollywood legend James Dean has been voted the coolest icon
of all time in a poll conducted by Glenfiddich Whisky. 'The
Rebel Without a Cause' star who was famous for his brooding
looks was just 24 when he was killed in 1955 in a head-on
crash while driving his Porsche. The King of rock and roll
Elvis Presley was runner-up in the icon poll of 2,000 men
while Steve McQueen came in third. "The top three men have
all been dead for years, which shows how young men can still
be inspired by icons that weren't even around in their lifetime,"
a spokesman for Glenfiddich was quoted as saying. The top five
coolest icons of all times are: 1. James Dean 2. Elvis Presley
3. Steve McQueen 4. Muhammad Ali 5. Robert De Niro (News,

The
day Elvis met Nixon: The title of Mark Feeney's ''Nixon
at the Movies: A Book About Belief'' is odd, even mystifying.
But it's accurate. This is an odd, mystifying book. You
turn the last page and find yourself wondering, What the
hell was that?... |
|
One
of the few chapters without a movie title is Suspicious Minds,
drawn from the Elvis Presley hit. It deals with the famous meeting
between Presley and Nixon. Feeney couldn't ask for a more resonant
moment (the photograph memorializing the meeting became the
most requested item in the history of the National Archives),
and he makes the most of it. In one sense the two men couldn't
have been more different: ''Absolute id crashed into absolute
superego,'' Feeney writes. ''The uptightest man in America shook
hands with just about the loosest.'' In another sense, each
welcomed -- even needed -- the other. Presley had been overshadowed
by the Beatles and the 60's counterculture; Nixon, a clueless
Mr. Jones, embodied everything the counterculture wasn't. ''Elvis
and Nixon stood far closer together than anyone might have reasonably
imagined in 1970,'' Feeney says. ''It's just that they were
standing back to back rather than side by side.'' (News,

who was Presley's longtime (and oft-controversial) manager,

Graceland

traditional switching on of the Elvis Christmas lights,
which to many means the beginning of the holiday season
in Memphis. The Jennings Osborne family from Little

switch was flipped to reveal a world of blue as the
crowd roared "Merry

of blue lights along the driveway leading to the mansion and
a life-size Nativity scene in the front yard accompanied by
Santa and his sleigh and many other items originally displayed
by Elvis. The interiors of Graceland feature Elvis's Christmas
decor for the holiday season and include his traditional red
velvet drapes and Presley family Christmas artifacts on display
for the first time around the tree. This year's spectacular
features thousands of new lights and will remain on, as is tradition,

Christmas
Peace: We found this review of Elvis' yuletide recordings
while searching the net: "Elvis Presley's catalog of
Christmas albums is second to none. Unlike many other singers,
his interpretations of traditional festive hymns like Silent
Night and the First Noel never felt like a novelty compromise
but a seasonal continuation of his immense repertoire. Favourites
like Blue Christmas and Merry Christmas Baby are filled with
his bluesy, rock'n'roll character while I'll Be Home On Christmas
Day and It Won't Seem Like Christmas (Without You) are yearning
with lonesome melancholy and reflection. His voice is as emotive
and comforting as ever and the string-laden arrangements smoother
than Bailey's with ice. So if you're sick of the office party
cheese and need something with more substance and distinction
this 20-track collection of The King's finest Christmas recordings
is a good place to turn. We may not get a white Christmas
this year but Elvis will always ensure we get a good dose
of blues. Every home should have a copy." (CD

Memphis' musical legacy may be steeped in rock 'n' roll, blues

music history. A low-budget tale of an aging hustler who tries

in firing line again...but is it unfair?: On 1 December
we reported that home movies of Elvis taken by the late Richard

A message posted on the ElvisCollectors messageboard stated

it appears the person was misinformed, as later a message
was posted by "EPE" saying: "Who makes up this
junk? We have never had any communication with Mrs. Davis

it on the Internet as you have. We have no desire to stop
her from releasing the material on DVD and could not do so,

Elvis
to make UK chart history January 8, 1935: This date
many call the true birth of rock n' roll. It was, in fact,
the day Elvis Presley entered the world, and to commemorate
the occasion, SonyBMG are set to make UK chart history
with four months of consecutive hit single releases from
the King, soundgenerator can report. Starting January
3, the label will embark on one of the most ambitious
single release schedules ever, with all of Elvis Presley's
18 UK #1 singles set to be re-released over 17 consecutive
weeks, ending on 25th April, 2005. "This is a |

first in the history of the British single," said SonyBMG Marketing
Director, Darren Henderson. "Never before has one artist's contribution
to popular music been celebrated in such a groundbreaking way.
This will be the first time one artist will release this number
of chart singles consecutively in such a short space of time,
potentially having seventeen hit singles in 4 months!" Each
single will be available in a limited edition numbered CD and
10" vinyl format, beautifully packaged utilising the original
U.S. and U.K. sleeve and label artwork. "All Shook Up", Elvis'
first UK number one, will start the ball rolling on January
3, Along with setting a Guinness World Record for the artist
who has released the most consecutive hit singles in a year,
SonyBMG are also gunning for the record for the highest number
of Top 20 UK single entries for any artist (currently Cliff
Richard has 66 to Elvis' 60). Soundgenerator
are proud to be offering one lucky winner the chance to win

Elvis
critic dies: Gene Grey's career in journalism spanned
three decades, but his not-so-subtle comparison of Elvis Presley
to a circus performer in 1977 may have provoked the most heated,
vitriolic responses from his readers. Mr. Grey, 60, a retired
Press reporter and columnist, was found dead Friday in his
downtown Binghamton apartment. Broome County Coroner Dr. James
Hayes said Mr. Grey died of a heart attack. Mr. Grey's friends
and former colleagues recalled him as a tough but fair journalist
who wasn't afraid to take on The King. Reviewing Presley's
visit to Binghamton in May 1977, just months before Presley's
death, Mr. Grey dubbed Presley "Michu the Midget of Rock,"
comparing him to a then-popular member of the Ringling Brothers
& Barnum & Bailey Circus. The comparison didn't sit well with
the newspaper's readers, who felt Mr. Grey didn't show enough
respect to Presley, colleagues recalled. (News,

I
met Elvis!: Caroline "Pinkie" Ugarte was
a young girl when she experienced the dream of a lifetime...meeting
Elvis on the set of Blue Hawaii. Now in her mid 50's,
Ms Ugarte (pictured right) lives in Sydney, Australia
and has many wonderful memories of the two weeks she spent
as Elvis' guest: "We ate breakfast and lunch with
him, he would get drinks for my mother, and I sat in his
chair while he was filming." (News,

Number
of Elvis fan clubs falling: The number of Elvis fan clubs
registered with EPE has fallen from 650 in 2002 to 450 this
year. It would be very interesting to also know how many fans
are "financial" members of fan clubs. EIN comment:
The fall in fan club numbers must be of concern to EPE. The
advent of the Internet has seen the formation of numerous
"online" fan clubs that don't charge a membership fee and
offer an online newsletter. The fan club landscape is very
different today compared to when Elvis was alive. (News/Comment,

Absolutely
ridiculous, but it had to happen!: A piece of toast (one
bite missing) that allegedly looked like the Virgin Mary recently
sold at auction for a ridiculously high figure. Well it didn't
take long as now someone has listed a peanut butter sandwich
on e-bay claiming it looks like Elvis! The starting price,
US$100.00. Whether or not we will see embroidered patches
and t-shirts based around the sandwich remains to be seen.
Virgin Mary toast t-shirts have become quite popular. (News/Odd

Cult
of the King (the people who keep Elvis alive): Following
on from last weekend's inaugural Elvis Presley Convention
in Canberra, Australia, The Canberra Times newspaper ran
a four page feature article yesterday in its Panorama
section about the Convention and Elvis fans. After the
paper's balanced coverage in the lead-up to the Convention
unfortunately yesterday's article was dominated by photos
of fans dressed as The King. |
|
While the article itself was quite good and addressed themes
including Elvis as "archetype" and Elvis
as "religion", the valid and interesting messages
were largely lost due to the media's need for "dominant
(stereotypical) visuals" that overshadow "informed
narrative" - the result, a classic case of pictures that
'told a thousand words'. (News/Comment, Source:

What
price, Ginger?: EIN recently received a catalog of sports
and celebrity memorabilia and autographs. While there was
no Elvis to be found we did discover in the celebrity auction
section that fans can buy Ginger Alden's autograph. The asking
price...US$10.00. Many fans are probably not aware, but Elvis's
alleged fiance at the time of his death later enjoyed(?) a
brief film career including co-starring in the 'Z' grade release
"Living Legend". The movie told the story of Eli
Canfield, the white jumpsuited King of Rock 'n' Roll who had
battles with prescription medication (I don't think we need
to say anymore). (News, Source: Carson Pirie

Shook Up" Cast Album Expected in Spring 2005: A cast
album of All Shook Up, the new Broadway-bound musical using
the songs made famous by Elvis Presley, will be recorded April

Palace Theatre Dec. 19-Jan. 23, 2005, prior to a Feb. 20,

Elvis' pop songs (by a variety of composers and lyricists)
for the musical, directed by Christopher Ashley. Ken Roberson
choreographs. (News, Source: Yahoo News)

"Don't Be Cruel," "Fools Fall in Love," "Heartbreak Hotel,"
"I Don't Want To," "It Hurts Me," "Jailhouse Rock," "Let Yourself
Go," "One Night With You" and "Teddy Bear." The creative team

Bob
Dylan feels more like "Elvis" than a prophet:
In his first TV interview for nearly 20 years, Bob Dylan said
he never saw himself as a singer-songwriter and felt more
comfortable with the idea of becoming Elvis Presley than the
prophet of a generation. To be broadcast Sunday on the CBS
network, the 63-year-old folk-rock legend said the hero worship
of the 60s generation often left him feeling like an "imposter."
"It was like being in an Edgar Allen Poe story and you're
just not that person everybody thinks you are, though they
call you that all the time," he said according to advance
extracts released by CBS. "'You're the prophet. You're the
savior.' I never wanted to be a prophet or a savior," he said.
"Elvis maybe. I could see myself becoming him. But prophet?
No." (News, Source: AFP)

"ELVIS
- Viennale 2001 Trailer" by Jonas Mekas: Jonas Mekas
shot footage during the final performance of Elvis'
1972 concerts in New York. The event and the people
were so wild that nobody paid any attention to his filming.
When the VIENNALE asked for a festival trailer, he immediately
thought of that footage. A coincidence led Mekas to
use a Strauss waltz with the images of a frenetic Elvis.
